  1. We've got some new Mini-Con news this week! Also, Brandon and some employees at Dragonsteel Entertainment will be participating in NaNoWriMo this year, and sharing their word counts multiple times a week, along with encouraging others to do the same. First, though: prewriting on Defiant is finished! This means he can start (and has started) the actual writing of the novel, which brings us to the first major piece of news. In case you haven't heard of it, National Novel Writing Month, more commonly known as NaNoWriMo, is a nonprofit organization that is most known for its eponymous annual program, encouraging authors to write a 50k word manuscript during the month of November. This year, it just so happened that the start of Defiant's writing was close to lining up with the start of the month, and so Brandon intentionally planned things out so he can participate. Around four times a week, he plans to post his wordcount for the day to r/Sanderson, with the goal of hitting as close to exactly 50k as possible, allowing him to provide an example of a constant pace to finish, as well as to encourage discussion in the comments between other writers who are attempting it. Additionally, various other members of Team Dragonsteel will be participating in this "SandoWriMo" and posting their word counts, such as Isaac (his art director), Janci Patterson (co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas), Adam (his head of publicity), Kathy (his sister-in-law and head of facilities), and Kellyn (an employee at the Dragonsteel Store). (Their usernames can be found in today's check-in post.) In other news, an updated guest list for the Dragonsteel Mini-Con has been released. Currently, the site includes (spoiler box for length): While the full event schedule is not out yet, they also announced Howard Lyon will be running a live painting session, along with Steve Argyle and Hayley Lazo. Audience participation is encouraged. The event will be at 7PM on the 22nd, in L2 Ballroom A. In a final bit of Mini-Con news, the badges have been revealed, and are by Jian Guo, cover artist of the Chinese editions: Beyond that, in order to celebrate the release of Cytonic, several new T-Shirt designs are available from the Dragonsteel store: Larger images and purchase links (hidden for length again): That's all for this week! As per usual, Brandon's Weekly Update video is on YouTube, as is this week's episode of Intentionally Blank.
  2. Not a lot new this week, but there's still some exciting things, such as a sweepstakes to celebrate the launch of Rhythm of War in paperback, and some fun previously-known things occurring such as the release of ReDawn (the second Skyward Flight novella) and a stream this weekend. As always, starting with the writing updates: Defiant prewriting is at 80%. He still plans to finish the first draft of the novel by January first, but it may be a bit tight. Additionally, Tor is running a sweepstakes to celebrate the paperback release of Rhythm of War. No purchase is necessary to enter, but you must live in the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec). The sweepstakes will run through November 8th (11:59PM ET), after which one winner will be picked to receive a Stormlight Archive satchel (made by BeastmanCaravan, whose page appears to be down unfortunately) and an amethyst Stormlight Archive D20 (made by RainbowShopCN). In YouTube news, Brandon put out a behind-the-scenes video about the Mistborn playing cards, as well as another "Five Favorites" video (this time with Brandon Mull) and of course, the weekly episode of Intentionally Blank came out last Wednesday. While that's about it for new things, this upcoming week also has a few big previously-announced things happening. Firstly, ReDawn comes out tomorrow! The trailer for the novella (if it can be called that, long as it is) featuring clips from the audiobook can be found on YouTube, a preview of the eBook version is up on Kobo, and preorder links for both digital and audio formats are listed on the publisher's page. Also, the fanmail stream is this Saturday, October 30th, at 3PM MDT. Brandon and his wife Emily will be dressed up in costumes and working through a lot of the fanmail they've been sent since they stopped having the segments in regular streams. (Questions will not be taken from chat, only from mail they open.) If the link is made available beforehand, as Adam sometimes does, this article will be updated with it, but if not, it'll be on Brandon's channels on various platforms like YouTube and Twitch. The full video is on YouTube, as always, as well as embedded below:
  3. Chiller week this time, in comparison to the past few. Brandon's released his schedule for Dragonsteel Mini-Con, as well as details about how to sign up for his class. He also gave us a tease about "movie stuff" he can't give any details on yet. Before we get to that, progress has been made on Defiant prewriting, of course, but we didn't get any progress bar percentage this time. Onto more exciting news, Brandon has released his schedule for the Dragonsteel Mini-Con: Monday, Nov. 22nd: 4:00 MDT — Intentionally Blank recording 7:00 MDT — Spoiler Discussion and Q&A 8:30 MDT — MTG Charity Draft Tuesday, Nov. 23rd: 7:00 MDT — Cytonic Release Event The schedule for other booths and partners is TBA. Additionally, signups for Brandon's workshop class at BYU will be open from 10-11PM MDT on October 23rd. While the lecture class is open for normal enrollment (and often gets posted on YouTube—2020's series can be found in this playlist), the workshop class will be fifteen students, picked from the applications by Brandon's friend and continuity editor Karen. One does NOT have to be a BYU student to apply, though if you get in but don't attend the university, you'll have to sign up for evening classes there while you're in the class. A bit of extra weight is given to applicants who have finished novels before, as well as those who have already taken the lecture course. Specific instructions to apply can be found on his website, as can a sample syllabus for the course. We also got an exciting tidbit, that Brandon is working on some sort of movie stuff that he can't announce yet or give details about, which is slowing Defiant prewriting. He's hinted about this a few times in livestreams, but we still don't know what it's all about. He also released a review of the film Free Guy (the second video in his new Rapid Review series), and of course last week's episode of his podcast Intentionally Blank is up on his channel. As a reminder, ReDawn, the second Skyward Flight novella, releases in eBook and audio next week, on the 26th! Preorder links can be found on Penguin Random House's site, and a preview can be found on Kobo's page. Lastly, the preorder giveaways for Cytonic from last week's update are still running, for those in the US. As always, the update can be found on Brandon's YouTube channel, with a transcript eventually going on his blog:
  4. Weekly Roundup time! Some fun things this week: there are two giveaways associated with Cytonic preorders! Also, we finally got that movie review Brandon mentioned a couple months back. But first, we've got the obligatory Defiant (Skyward 4) update: prewriting is at 33%. Not much else to say there. Also, in case you missed it, the US cover for ReDawn was revealed on Tuesday! Moving on to the main event, though: if you're looking to preorder Cytonic, there are two giveaways going on, depending on where you preorder it from. The first is a giveaway for anyone who lives in the US and preorders from ANY US retailer (be it Amazon, the Mini-Con, or a local bookstore; as long as they give you a receipt, it qualifies): If you enter the retailer and receipt number (as proof of purchase) into the form on Get Underlined's website, they'll send you an enameled pin (Brandon says Doomslug in the video, but the poster shows the M-Drone hugging a mushroom), and a link to virtually watch the Cytonic release party at the Dragonsteel Mini-Con on November 23rd from 7PM-9PM MDT. The second is a sweepstakes open to anyone who preorders from Barnes & Noble's website or applies via email (see below). One winner will receive: A leatherbound journal A signed copy of Cytonic A collection of some of Brandon's favorite books, including: Going Postal An Ember in the Ashes The Black Prism Uprooted The Promise of Blood The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms The Star Touched Queen Project Hail Mary A Darker Shade of Magic In addition, thanks to legal requirements in the United States, an alternative method of entry is available for those who don't want to purchase from Barnes & Noble: you can instead send an email to [email protected] titled "Entry Form Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson Sweepstakes", with your name, email address, and physical address. (Only one entry per person is allowed, and duplicates will be disqualified.) On the other hand, if you preordered from Barnes & Noble but want to opt-out, you can send an email to sweepstakesoptout@bn with the subject "Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson Sweepstakes Opt Out". These events are not mutually exclusive: if you preorder from B&N, that order does qualify for both their sweepstakes and the Get Underlined giveaway, and emailing to enter B&N's contest does not prevent you from getting the pin and release event access. If you live outside the US, Team Dragonsteel is currently in talks with the UK publisher about other promotions, but we'll just have to wait and find out whether or not that comes to fruition and in what way. In other news, Brandon did a mostly spoiler-free review of Jungle Cruise. An aside: he actually mentioned he had made a film review (although had not revealed which movie) back in August, covered in our very first Weekly Update article—how time flies... And lastly, he announced that the Halloween livestream has been moved to October 30th, at 3PM MDT. Adam did actually put a note about this on the last Weekly Update video, so our previous Weekly Roundup article did mention the correct date, but if you were listening to the video without paying too much attention to the screen, you may have gotten the old schedule instead. As a reminder, the Halloween livestream will be Brandon and Emily opening fanmail all dressed up in-costume, to try and work through a lot of what has built up since the normal streams stopped having fanmail segments. No questions will be taken, except those sent in with said mail. Should you wish to watch Brandon's update video, it is of course on YouTube, and embedded below. Ordinarily, a transcript is eventually uploaded to Brandon's website by Brandon's assistant Adam, but his posts haven't been made for this one or last week's yet, so can't link to it here.
  5. ?Weekly Roundup time! Lots of progress updates on books (Wax & Wayne 4, Skyward 4, and an unspecified book that's probably a Dark One story), and lots of YouTube stuff coming up (two livestreams this month, and an interview with Will Friedle)! Also, The Way of Kings leatherbounds have been added to the store, as have Strength before Weakness T-shirts! As is often the case, we begin with an update on Wax & Wayne 4: The Lost Metal has officially been sent off to the beta readers. As mentioned last time, Brandon plans to do the next revision in spring, giving the community beta readers and the editors plenty of time to get all their feedback in and organized. Now that that's out of the way for now, he will be starting a revision of a story he is co-writing with Dan Wells for Mainframe. While Brandon did not give a name for it, Dan recently tweeted about finishing the first draft of a collab named Dark One: Forgotten, so it's probably that. Forgotten will be a prequel to the main Dark One books, and an in-world "true crime"-style podcast featuring a journalist tracking a serial killer. No other information has been revealed, but that description plus the name should probably be sending some alarm bells a-ringing in the heads of anyone who read Dark One's first volume. (For those curious, Mainframe's site also lists a story named Dark One: Prophetic Histories, which we know essentially nothing about.) This will, however, slow down work a bit on the next item on our list: prewriting for Skyward 4 (which is at 20%). As a reminder, this final installment in the Skyward series—tentatively named Defiant—is expected to release spring 2023. However, the first draft is intended to be finished by the end of 2021, so that he can jump into Stormlight 5 come the new year. In other things Skyward, Janci Patterson's first Skyward Flight novella Sunreach has been doing excellently in the ratings, currently sitting at: 4.9 stars on Audible 4.7 stars on Amazon 4.4 stars on Goodreads Shameless plug, since we're on the topic of Sunreach reviews: if you've finished and want to see some full spoiler discussion about it, be sure to check out Shardcast, the official podcast of the 17th Shard (that's us!), which today released a Sunreach Minisode where you can hear some of our other staff discuss it. As a reminder, you can find links to purchase Sunreach on Penguin Random House's website, as which also has links to order Skyward and Starsight, or to pre-order ReDawn (out October 26th), Cytonic (out November 23rd), and Evershore (out December 28th). For a final bit of book news, Brandon gave a minor clarification on reading order: while it's recommended to read Cytonic before Evershore (which is release order), this is a matter of pacing, not spoilers, and if you really want to read the novellas all in a row, you can do that without ruining the Cytonic experience, it just won't be optimal because the stories were designed to read most naturally the order they're coming out in. In addition to book news, we have … other book things! Ahem. Anyway, Dragonsteel Books will be selling a limited supply of The Way of Kings leatherbound editions left over from the Kickstarter for $200. They can be found on the store's website, and will be mailed directly from the bindery (this means they cannot be bundled with any other store items for shipping). Once this stock runs out, they will likely not be reprinted until next year, though specifics are not settled yet. Any reprinted editions will not be signed, and may or may not come with the slipcase or genuine leather covers, since those were unlocked by Kickstarter stretch goals and are not the normal way Brandon's leatherbounds are done. In another piece of merch news, Strength before Weakness T-Shirts are also now available on Dragonsteel's store. They cost $25 and are available from size Small to size 3X-Large. Book news isn't the only news, however (though there's a lot of it)—we've got some YouTube news as well! First up, Brandon will be doing two livestreams this month, instead of his usual one, but will not be doing any in November due to Cytonic's release and the Dragonsteel Mini-Con. The first one will be on October 7th, alongside Janci Patterson. This will be a normal Q&A stream (theoretically spoiler-free, as usual; hopefully a Cytoverse spoiler stream may happen eventually but none have been confirmed), and presumably held around the normal time (usually his streams are somewhere around 6PM or 7PM MDT). However, timing has not been confirmed so please take that guess with a grain of salt and watch Brandon's Twitter for official announcements. Update: Confirmed to be at 6PM MDT, as expected. Stream will be up on YouTube at this link. The second stream will be a fanmail stream at 3PM MDT on October 30th, where Brandon and his wife Emily will, dressed in costume, try and get through opening a large chunk of the fanmail they've been sent. For time reasons, questions will not be taken for this stream, outside of ones sent in with the mail. (Note: packages are pre-screened before he opens them, though the first time Brandon himself will be seeing anything will be on-stream. So keep it appropriate!) In addition to the streams, Brandon interviewed Will Friedle at FanX, where the two discussed their favorite pieces of media and why they consider them to be so good. Brandon also says that there are other similar videos in the pipeline, though he has not released details yet. (No updates on the Script Notes video or movie review he mentioned a little over a month ago, unfortunately, but I imagine those will be coming out eventually as well.) Lastly, just a reminder that Inktober is currently ongoing, and there's a great set of Cosmere-themed prompts made for it by our very own @FelCandy and Dragonsteel's Isaac Stewart! You can find art using the prompts on various social platforms, such as Twitter, Tumblr, or Instagram (close call on whether that last link was gonna work today or not…) Which series are you looking forward to the continuation of most? And more immediately, which Skyward story seems most exciting? Alternatively, are you going to buy a leatherbound or T-shirt? Also, any cool Inktober art you loved? Wow, there really are a lot of things this week… Anyway, if you have opinions on any of those questions, let us know in the comments below! Naturally, Brandon's Weekly Update video is on YouTube, and a transcript will at some point be uploaded to his blog.
  6. Some more exciting news this week: first, Sunreach is out! Also, the next revision of Wax and Wayne 4 is finished, Skyward 4 has been started, and Mistborn playing cards are up for preorder! Additionally, all orders have been shipped for the tenth anniversary Kickstarter for The Way of Kings. (Summary's a bit late, due to school stuff, but this turned out to be fortuitous, as Brandon's newsletter today contained some announcements of its own to put in.) You heard that, Sunreach, the first of the Skyward Flight novellas written by Brandon and his friend and former student Janci Patterson, is officially out in both eBook and audiobook formats! It takes place around the end of Starsight and start of Cytonic, from the viewpoint of FM. You can find links to order it on Penguin Random House's website, alongside the rest of the series. In case you missed the previous announcements, ReDawn (the second novella, which follows Alanik) will release October 26th, Cytonic (the third full novel, which of course follows Spensa) will release November 23rd, and Evershore (the third novella, which follows Jorgen) will release December 28th. The update also clarified a point of minor confusion: the recommended reading order is release order, and even if you wait on the series for the print collection of all three novellas to release next year, it is suggested to start with Sunreach and ReDawn, and then break to read Cytonic before continuing on to Evershore. Publisher's blurb for Sunreach: That's not all, though–the Cytoverse train continues full speed ahead as Brandon has started outlining Skyward 4 (which he hopes to title Defiant). The goal is for the first draft of Defiant to be finished by the end of the year, and for the final book to release spring 2023. But wait, wasn't he working on something else already? Well, turns out the second draft of The Lost Metal is now complete! From here, the book will be sent to Brandon's editors and to the beta readers, and he will return to revise it with their feedback in the spring. The book is planned to have a fall 2022 release date. While we'll have to wait for a while yet for that book, we do have new Mistborn products in the form of the Mistborn playing cards by Kings Wild Project. A full article about those will be forthcoming [edit: it's up!], so for now I'll leave it at a link to their site, where you can preorder a set. As one preorder opens, another finally comes to an end: shipping for the The Way of Kings 10th anniversary Kickstarter campaign is now complete. While some packages are still in transit, most people should have received theirs, so Dragonsteel Books recommends that if you haven't, you should check your email (including spam or junk folders) to see if they contacted you about any problems shipping, and to reach out to your postal service. Let us know what you think of the novella in the Sunreach Spoiler Forum or the #sunreach-spoilers channel on our Discord server, and be sure to drop a rating and review on whatever platform you used to purchase it! The latest Weekly Update video (featuring special guest Janci) can of course be found on Brandon's YouTube channel, and a transcription will be able to be found on his blog in the coming days. You can also sign up for his newsletter via the form on his website, and the newsletter for Mainframe (Brandon's audiobook company, co-founded with his friend Max Epstein) via its MailChimp page. (You may have noticed this week's title is a bit different—originally this series started as just me summarizing the videos in a quick article format. However, I've more and more been adding other things, whether it's news Brandon didn't get to in his update or convenience improvements such as putting the book blurbs right here in the article body, and so I figured the title should reflect this.)
  7. The string of exciting news in the updates continues, as this week we got release dates and blurbs for all three Skyward Flight novellas and a cover for Sunreach (the first one), as well as a preview chapter for Cytonic! On a more somber note, Brandon went over and apologized for the bugs with the Mini-Con site (which we covered in our main post on the event). And of course, the progress bar for The Lost Metal ticks ever-upwards, now at 75%. Yes, you read that right, we finally have a cover for Sunreach, Janci Patterson's novella following FM (the first of three following various members of Skyward Flight around the events of Starsight and Cytonic). Without further ado, here it is: The novella is slated to release September 28th, barely over a week away! According to a press release from Gollancz, Brandon's UK publisher, the second novella (ReDawn, following Alanik) will release October 26th, and the third (Evershore, following Jorgen) will release December 28th. They will release simultaneously in eBook and audio, and the first two will be narrated by Suzy Jackson, who recorded the US audiobooks for the rest of the Skyward series (however, the narrator for Evershore has not been announced yet—thanks /u/Urithiru on Reddit for catching my mistake there). Additionally, Brandon plans to release all three novellas in a single print collection sometime next year. We also have blurbs for all three, which are copied below for your convenience. Warning: ReDawn and Evershore's blurbs contain spoilers for the previous novella(s), so click at your own risk. Sunreach ( preorder): ReDawn (preorder): Evershore (preorder): As if that wasn't enough Skyward news for one week, Tor.com has posted an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Cytonic (an earlier, much-changed version of the prologue and first chapter were previously released through Brandon's newsletter). It is currently unclear whether more preview chapters will be posted in the lead-up to the full novel's release on November 23rd or not. In other book updates, the second draft of The Lost Metal (Wax and Wayne book 4) is now 75% finished. After this draft, the novel will be sent to Brandon's writing group for feedback and further stages of revision, and it will eventually release in fall 2022. And lastly, Brandon explained and apologized for the bugs with the Mini-Con store. For more on that, you can read the updates to our main post on the event (which will celebrate the release of Cytonic). Now that we have the blurbs, which novella are you most excited to read? Which format will you be using, audio or digital? Let us know below or in the #events channel on our Discord server! Also, discuss the Cytonic preview chapter in the #noncosmere channel (as long as you spoiler tag it)! As per usual, the full Weekly Update video is on Brandon's YouTube channel and embedded below (though this week, much of the news comes from other sources), and the transcript will be on his blog when completed.
  8. Jam-packed Weekly Update this time! Brandon has released his schedule for FanX later this week, and the second draft of The Lost Metal has hit 70%. Cool stuff, wonder if there's anything else. I think that was all of it, right? Yeah that should be the las- fine, fine, I'll stop dragging it out. Biggest news (and reason this article is late ) is, we finally have details about the Dragonsteel Mini-Con! You can learn more about that in our article. Getting the smallest update out of the way first, the second draft of The Lost Metal is 70% done (that's the last draft before the book goes out to the beta readers). Progress will probably be slower this week due to the topic of the next announcement, but he is still on track to finish this draft late September or early October. In case you've missed it, the final version of the book is expected to release fall 2022. Next up, Brandon's schedule for FanX later this week has been released. Thursday, September 16th: Writing a Successful Series in Science Fiction and Fantasy 6:00PM in 250A Signing 7:00PM at Booth 1518 Friday, September 17th: Writers of the Future: Learn How to Engage Readers 1:00PM in 355B Intentionally Blank: The Brandon and Dan Podcast 3:00PM in 250A Signing 6:00PM at Booth 1518 Saturday, September 18th: Brandon Sanderson Spotlight Panel 4:00PM in 250A Signing 5:00PM at Booth 1518 Last but certainly not least, information on the Dragonsteel Mini-Con is finally out! As mentioned, we made a separate post about that you can read to find out more. Will you be attending either of these cons? Which one(s) and why? Feel free to discuss in the comments below, or in the #events channel on our Discord server! The full Weekly Update video is of course on Brandon's YouTube channel as well as below, and the transcript will be on his blog when done.
  9. After skipping last week due to assistant Adam being on a well-earned vacation, Brandon is back again with another Weekly Update, and I'm back again with another summary! First things first (well, it's a third thing really, but that's besides the point), Brandon has finished his draft of Evershore, aka the third of Janci Patterson's Skyward novellas set between Starsight and Cytonic. The novella—which follows Jorgen—will now be sent back to Janci for further editing, and is likely to release shortly after Cytonic itself comes out on November 23rd. In case you missed the last update, the first novella (titled Sunreach and following FM) will release late September or early October, and the second (titled ReDawn and following Alanik) should release sometime between Sunreach and Cytonic. They will initially only be available in audio and eBook formats, but a print collection is planned for sometime 2022. This is not the only writing he's been working on, however. He has returned to editing and revising the long-awaited conclusion to the Wax and Wayne series (often referred to as Mistborn Era 2), and so the second draft of The Lost Metal now sits at 50% on the progress bar. It is set to release Fall 2022. Last but certainly not least, Brandon has a new poll for you! His store has run out of copies of The Emperor's Soul, but before they reprint it, they would like input on how to do so. The first option is that they simply reprint the current edition of the book, with the original cover. Alternatively, they have been considering reprinting it in a shorter hardcover style, fitting alongside Edgedancer and Dawnshard on the shelf, and giving it a new cover inspired by that of the Graphic Audio edition. You can drop a vote for your pick via the Google Form, or follow this link to view the current tally. As always, the full Weekly Update video (which you can watch below) has been uploaded to Brandon's YouTube channel, and the full transcript will eventually be up on his blog when it's finished. Which cover did you vote for? Which of the three Skyward novellas has you most excited? Be sure to drop a comment below and tell us why!
  10. Brandon's latest Weekly Update is out, with updates on Wax and Wayne 4's second draft, the co-written Skyward novellas, the winning design from the T-Shirt poll, and upcoming YouTube content! First off, more progress has been made on the second draft of The Lost Metal, the fourth Wax & Wayne book, bringing the progress bar to 40%! (The second draft generally goes pretty quickly for him, and this is about on schedule for what he plans.) However, this next week Brandon will be taking a break from Mistborn to do a revision of Janci Patterson's third Skyward novella, Evershore (which will follow Jorgen). In case you've missed it, Brandon and his friend and former student Janci are writing a series of three Skyward novellas to tie into Cytonic, the upcoming third book in the series. The first novella will likely release a little over a month from now, and the second sometime between then and Cytonic's release on November 23rd. The third novella will likely come out shortly after Cytonic itself. In other Skyward news, results are in for the T-shirt poll, and the winner is... the mighty Doomslug the Destroyer! However, as M-Bot hugging a mushroom was very close behind it, Kara has decided Dragonsteel will likely make shirts with both designs. Stay tuned for further news on that! That's not the only thing in the works, though. A new Script Notes video is coming, though it will likely be a few weeks, as they take a lot of editing. No hints on what movie it's about, so keep your eyes peeled. In addition to that, he also did an ordinary movie review that'll be coming out soon. As with Script Notes, no clues given on the subject, so we'll have to wait and see. Transcript will be available on Brandon's blog when Dragonsteel is finished with it.
