  1. I've only read up to Dawnshard (no RoW), Era 1, and Warbreaker "In that case, the spike instead steals the very power of Preservation existing within the soul of the people. (The power that, in fact, gives all people sentience.)A Hemalurgic spike can extract this power, then transfer it to another, granting them residual abilities similar to those of Allomancy. After all, Preservation's body-a tiny trace of which is carried by every human being -is the very same essence that fuels Allomancy." If Preservation gives sentience then how do others in the cosmere have sentience And what does it mean SIMILAR to allomancy or is this a RAFO.
  2. No spoilers for RoW why are the shards different. Shouldn’t all the rules apply to all of them Can the Rosharian gods see metal? Can they impact the world like Ruin with the ashmounts
  3. From the album: Stormlight Paintings

I realized I had never posted this here! Keep an eye out for this volume 2 of TWOK leatherbound
  4. I am re-reading TWoK and I just read the flashback where Kaladin decides to join Amaram's army to support Tien. Before that meeting, Hesina lays out that yes, they are spending spheres now, but they don't need to. She expected Roshone to think that Lirin is losing this fight and wanted to delay a few more months so Kaladin could take the rest of the spheres and go to Kharbranth and become a surgeon. When Kaladin asks them to come to Kharbranth with him, she says no. Now the question: If Roshone had not made the move, if Amaram would not have taken their sons, what did they plan to do once Kaladin had left? I expect Roshone would have been even more angry with them after that and it would have made their life a living hell, even more than it was already. What were they thinking they would do - a surgeon, his wife and their son who is not good at the chosen apprenticeship in a town where their landlord hates them? This doesn't seem wise. They couldn't think that Roshone would calm down after the spheres slipped through his fingers, could they?
  5. Pines

    Gaz!

Requested by a user over at r/cosmere, couldn't resist trying my hand at this guy! (Thanks u/green_office_stapler for the outfit inspiration!)
  6. I was rereading TWoK and I noticed something new in the scene at the hospital where Jasnah soulcasts the bread and the jam. When Jasnah and Shallan are talking about it later, Jasnah tells her that she accidentally soulcast the antidote away when she transformed the jam. Similarly, she transformed the bread and the poison that she put in her mouth. But, how can she accidentally soulcast something? Here is what I understand about soulcasting: When you soulcast, you (or your mind) travel partially into Shadesmar You speak with the bead/soul of the object that you want to transform An object develops a soul based on how it is perceived by others over time Objects in the physical realm that are made of multiple parts, but are perceived as one thing, have only a single soul/bead From The Emperor's Soul: Objects that have been put together recently see themselves as distinct objects in Shadesmar and the spiritual realm. Presumably, this means that they have multiple beads/souls. If I am right about the above points, shouldn't Jasnah have realized that there were two cognitively distinct objects that she was soulcasting? The poison and the antidote had only been recently added to the bread and the jam. They had spent the vast majority of their existence as "poison" and "antidote" so they should have their own bead in Shadesmar, right? Even if Jasnah only perceived them as bread and jam at first and can combine them together, she should have had a moment where she perceived separate beads. If that is correct, then I would expect Jasnah to warn Shallan or accuse Kabsal or simply soulcast the poison and antidote but leave the bread and jam. Yet, Jasnah admitted that she accidentally soulcast away the antidote which suggests that she didn't perceive the separate beads. What am I missing here?
  7. In the baxil interlude, at the end he decides that he will go to NW to seek the old magic. Do you guys think he went? What would he have asked for? He said he would ask for courage. I wonder what NW would make of such a boon! Do you think any KR order would have something to do with courage? Stonewards? or his interlude was just an introduction to Shalash? Any ideas?
  8. So I’ve been reading through TWoK and I remember reading a passage that said the bridge men would often run without hesitation or never slack simply because of the fact that there was always a small hope that one could run fast enough to simply get there before the parshendi could get to and secure a plateau for fire upon the bridge men. How often does this actually happen?
  9. Hey guys, first post! Had a question, and couldn’t find the answer anywhere. We know Rock can see spren. Which implies he’s able to slip into the cognitive realm somewhat. Since he can see spren, does he recognize shardblades as dead spren?
  10. I was doing a reread of TWOK, and at the end of chapter 26:Stillness, there is noted that purple ichor spurts out of a chasmfiend as Adolin reaches inside to grab a gemheart. I also recently listened to the Five Scholars shardcast in which they reference the importance of Yesteel being the one to discover ichor alcohol. Could this possible mean that Yesteel has been to Roshar and developed it from the purple ichor from the animals of Roshar? I say animals because in the prologue of TWOK Kalak notices purple blood on the ground, as well it is stated in the books that axehounds have purple blood. Is this just coincidence I am noticing or is there something noteworthy here? I am not good with the timelines on when each book in the Cosmere unfolds. Could Yesteel be responsible for some life on Roshar, like the chasmfiends? My speculations, probably common speculation would assume that Roshar's Shattered Plains and surrounding areas could have been underwater at some point, given the description of life and environments. Chasmfiend being very crustacean esque, and the plant life being very ocean like. Is this life on Roshar strictly due to evolution or experiments of Yesteel in his pursuit to discover ichor alcohol? Or is all of this just a huge rabbit hole tangent my brain went down? Either way any thoughts or speculations?
  11. *Listening to Way of Kings for probably the 7th time* I still get goosebumps throughout. I am trying to get my wife to read it just so I have someone to talk about the feelings I get, or the imagery it invokes in my minds eye. This, is the main reason I came here. To share in this world that feels so real. Chapter: “A Light by Which to See” Kaladin, Syl, the Storm Father, and me. and my heart starts racing.
  12. From the album: Stormlight Doodles

This is a doodle I did of Navani Kholin when I got bored reading Dalinar's part in TWOK. So... uh, yeah.
  13. Okay, here's what I'm basing this theory on. First, from what I understand, we know that Hoid was present, at the Shattering of Adonalsium. Next, we know that Hoid was offered a Shard, and refused to take it. (please note that this is my personal understanding, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) Now, here's my evidence. This all comes from the chapter heading of Part 4 of WoR. These chapter headings are a letter from Frost to Hoid, in reply to Hoid's letter to Frost, through the chapter headings of one of the parts of TWoK. Here are my quotes: "Is not the destruction we have wrought enough? The worlds you now tread bear the touch and design of Adonalsium. Our interference so far has brought nothing but pain." (Chapter 66, "Stormblessings") This seems to me to be Frost expressing grief over causing the Shattering of Adonalsium. Because what else would happen if your God was killed, than chaos? "However, it seems to me that all things have been set up for a purpose, and if we--as infants-- stumble through the workshop, we risk exacerbating, not preventing, a problem." (Chapter 68, "Bridges") This, to me, seems to imply that they countered Adonalsium's diving design, in shattering him. "He bears the weight of God's own diving hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context. He is what we made him to be, old friend. And that is what he, unfortunately, wished to become. (Chapter 71, "Vigil") This I think, is the most telling of the quotes. "He is what we made him to be..." How else would they have made Rayse full of hatred, than Shattering Adonalsium, and giving him the Shard of Odium? You, however, have never been a force for equilibrium. You tow chaos behind you like a corpse dragged by one leg through the snow. Please, hearken to my plea. Leave that place and join me in my oath of nonintervention. (Chapter 74, "Striding the Storm") Let me refer back to the first quote, "Our interference has brought nothing but pain." Although this could be referring in general, to Hoid's interference in important events, but based on the context and the other quotes, I'm going to go with he sowed chaos by Shattering Adonalsium. More Implications: If Hoid directly shattered Adonalsium, with the help of Frost, and neither of them received a Shard (I'm assuming Frost isn't a Shard), then it was in order to prevent some terrible thing from happening, not to grow in power. (Although I'm sure that those who helped him had that as at least a secondary motive.) Conclusion: Hoid shattered Adonalsium, with the help of Frost.
  14. I was doing a reread with a few of my friends and we noticed that jam is mentioned in almost all Shallan chapters in The Way of Kings. May be it is used as a setup for what happened at the end of the book. But when the first time Shallan met Kabsal, she blurts out that she loves jam. It is not as if her love for jam later on in TWoR is because she was mooning over Kabsal. But oddly, jam is never mentioned again in WoR - it might be because of what happened at the end of TWoK. But still... jam is not even mentioned in her flashback chapters. At the rate with which she was mentioning jam in TWoK, it seems odd from BranSan that Shallan chapters never mention jam again in WoR.
  15. In The Way of Kings Lanky Taran was mentioned as Tvlakv's serving boy. In Words of Radiance there is no word about any serving boy with Tvlakv. I know he's a (very) minor character but I'm curious if he shows up again like Gaz did.
  16. Please note that this thread contains both WoR and tWoK spoilers. You have been warned. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- While rereading tWoK, I noticed something interesting on page 777, the page where Kaladin and Tien enlisted to the army. Let me quickly quote it for you: Seeing as in WoR kaladin mentioned that he must return to Hearthstone to warn them of the impending doom, he will surprise his parents by the fact that he is still alive - but what of tien? He swore on the stormfather and the almighty himself, surely as a man of honour, this promise will haunt him in some way or another. In addition, the way it repeats itself in the last line and italicizes it causes me to think that it will have some importance in the next book, most likely with his honor-relying relationship with Syl. Just some Laral related speculations about the Bride prayer and the silversmiths What are your thoughts of these two speculations?
  17. Whose Blade did Dalinar bond in WoR? I think it is unlikely that he did in fact bond Talenel'Elin's Honorblade as we were led to believe. We know that at the end of TWoK Hoid shows up to meet Talenel'Elin. I think it's likely that at this point Hoid swapped the Honorblade for a regular Shardblade. The only reason I say this is because when Dalinar bonds with The Stormfather he has to get rid of his blade and after summoning it hears the screams. If it really were Talenel'Elin's blade then there would be no Spren involved and no screaming. I guess my question really is, what happened to Talenel'Elin's Honorblade and why was it taken? Did Hoid take it? If so, then why? ~sbi
  18. Not asking a question, just wanted to say i'm excited about book two of the storm light archive!
