  1. Hoid is my favorite character in the Cosmere, but I don't think he is a good guy...at all. He's selfish, cunning, and tricky. I think he is ultimately only out for himself in the Cosmere, but he does have a larger goal. Would you want to help Hoid on purpose or do you think the Cosmere would be better off without him?
  2. I have a theory I don't think anyone else has brought up. (I know! Shocking!! They're so hard to find these days with so many clever little theorists on this website.) White sand is bone spores. They are only mentioned briefly in Tress of the Emerald Sea, but I think there is enough to link these two together. I have 3 points that I believe confirm this theory. 1. "People can't even make up their minds of what color 'bone spores' are supposed to be. White or black? Or both?" What other material do we know of in the Cosmere that is both black and white? 2. Furthermore, the requirement of water to perform sand mastery is another point in favor of this theory. The Sand Masters are creating a Luhel bond without knowing it in order to manipulate this sand. 3. From this quote: "We always talk about there being twelve seas and twelve moons. But, ... I feel I should confirm things like that. (Tress) There are, after all, thirteen kinds of spores. (Fort) No there ain't. Don't you be spreading that lie (Ann) It's not a lie. Its a legend. Different thing entirely (Fort)" we can infer that Bone Spores are not native Lumarans. Their aether does not live here on one of her moons. So maybe the "legends" of bone spores are from brief encounters with Taldain's White Sand and the aether who creates it. This is probably pretty far fetched, but it feels like the kind of thing that Brandon wouldn't include unless it meant something. Why even bring up that there are 13 spore types but only 12 moons and aether? Why specifically mention that that spore type is white and black? I haven't real all of White Sand (just vol. 1, though please feel free to spoils them if they answer this question) so there may be some internal explanation of White Sand that I missed or didn't get to. Anyway, I hope you liked my theory!
  3. Steel plating repels Aethers that are growing. So, would steel plating on the hull of a ship protect it when entering the Crimson Sea, since the spikes that are formed wouldn't ever pierce the ship?
  4. This line of thought came from another thread, but it seems like it warrants its own discussion. I was looking into what possible levels of ozone could be generated from Zephyr for use as an oxidation agent for spore bullet impact charges, but I'm finding that even the amount in smellable ozone might be creating a host of problems. Ann says that Zephyr spores give off a smell like lightning, which is one of the things she finds nifty. The characteristic smell of lightning often is the result of ozone forming. The issue with this is that ozone is hazardous. Here's a snippet from the Wikipedia article: Assuming I'm reading this correctly, if you can smell it, it's probably damaging your lungs (sorry Ann). Because of the nature of the spore seas, rain falling on the Zephyr sea is by definition, sea level and breathable air. Longterm exposure, even at very low levels of ozone causes all sorts of problems (ouch, sorry Ann). An article by PubMed Central found here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4427716/ also notes "A characteristic property of ozone odor is the fact that it is easily addictive" (ouch, ouch, sorry Ann, but this explains a lot). I'm not sure on the decomposition rate of ozone at ground level compared to the generation rate of the gasses of the Zephyr sea, but all this together seems to be a substantial concern for residents of the Zephyr sea, particularly for anyone who frequently works directly with Zephyr. It might not be gassing them, but this doesn't seem insignificant. I'm guessing Brandon will try to avoid playing the card he did for Scadrial, "they are just genetically resistant to metal poisoning". Sorry for everyone that likes Ann, based on this amateur prognosis. I'm pretty sure the plan for Zephyr is to serve as an emergency air supply for the space age. If the air it generates had hazardous gasses in it, that could cause problems, but not insurmountable ones. I'd guess a filtration unit should be able to filter the larger trioxygen molecules from the breathable air until it decomposes into dioxygen, so that wouldn't cause issues directly. Thoughts? Anything I've missed? I'm not an expert on the matter by any means. Presumably the spore cycle that Xisis is studying at the bottom of the Crimson Sea somehow has to account for air generation above sea level... right? If this "smell of lightning" isn't ozone, then what is causing it?
  5. Okay, this is an insane theory that popped into my head just now and I need to get it out so everyone can tell me that I'm crazy. Spoilers for Tress of the Emerald Sea. In Chapter 23, Fort mentions a legendary supposed thirteenth spore, the "bone spore," which people supposedly can't decide whether it's white or black. I think it's supposed to be assumed that these spores are aethers. They activate when exposed to water, which fits what we see in The Lost Metal. Each has a different effect. This interested me earlier in the book, because it's similar to the White Sand, which takes water from the Sand Master as it uses its energy. Then it struck me. I'm proposing that this supposed thirteenth spore either is, or grows on, the white sand of Taldain, and that Sand Mastery is a form of Aether magic. I know very little about how aethers actually work and don't know how the theory will actually hold up. I've only read up to the point where this thirteenth spore is mentioned, then came here to post the theory. I don't know if it fits with anything else, or how a "spore" would make it to Taldain. But this is something that I think is worth discussion. And if it isn't, please tell me, so I can stop following a crazy theory.
  6. “ Anyway, the aethers up above are rampantly self-propagating, and each is connected to a primal element. Vegetation, atmosphere, silicate” Excerpt From Tress of the Emerald Sea Brandon Sanderson https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewBook?id=0 This material may be protected by copyright. does this mean the other spores are based around primal elements as well? what would crimsons element be?
  7. I am listening through Tress of the Emerald Sea and would like to put out everything I can find about the magic of this world and hopefully you all noticed more about the magic and we can put it all in one place. First off, there are 12 geosynchronous moons which must be equatorial or they would move in the sky of the planet compared to land features. So, The Rock (Diggin's Point) must be very near the equator. The moons drop "spores" which fills the low lying areas. "The Sea" is not filled with water, but rather spores. The Verdant Lunagry is about "50 to 60 miles" from The Rock and this makes me suspect that the moon is named something like Verda. Lunagries are the location of each moon's place of pollen/spore drop. The other moons drop spores of different colors including red (a cup in the story has a butterfly flying over a "Red Ocean". There also mentions of seas that are Emerald, Crimson, and Midnight and are presumably filled from different Lunagies. The Verdant Lunagry drops green spores. "Ship's sail that dust like ships sail water", but they are also light enough that they can be blown by the wind. When a ship sets sail, the ocean pushes air up which supports the weight of the ship. The mechanics are very unclear to me. "Verdant Spores" are specifically listed as growing plants when exposed to water. I suspect the other Lunagries drop spores with a different magical effect along with their different color. When Verdant Spores are exposed to water, they suddenly and explosively grow plants and vines. You can use salt or silver to prevent this from happening. The Rock has a salty aquafer which has wells in it and the salty water protects against the effects of the Verdant Spores. Gray spores are "dead" and do not explode to life when exposed to water. The ocean is filled with spores and not water, but there are "fish" and "elephant seal" so there must be life in the ocean as the residents are not allowed to leave The Rock but are familiar with these things. There is a similarity to Nalthis in the the spores fade from colorful to gray. There is a similarity to Taldain as the magic falls from the sky and reacts with water like the White Sand. There is a similarity with Roshar in that "Emerald" spores cause life to grow much like emeralds do on Roshar. This should offer hints at what the other Lunagries spores would do. Roshar has ten poles stones and this planet has twelve moons, so there will be two additional colors beyond what is shown on Roshar. Please help clarify what else we know. Thanks, Chip
