  4. SpanReads, our reread show, returns! For 2023, in anticipation for Defiant's release, we are doing the Skyward series! We're doing three episodes on each book, and this one is Reactions & Retrospectives. Importantly, unlike our cosmere SpanReads, we need to compare with the rest of the series, so this does have full Skyward series spoilers, excluding Defiant, of course, because it isn't out yet. So, what did we think of Skyward on a reread? Stay tuned to find out. For this book, we have Mi'chelle (firstRainbowRose), Jessie (Lady Lameness), Ian (Weiry), and Eric (Chaos). Need a recap? Jessie has you covered, and her own channel, she did a full recap for Skyward: https://youtu.be/vfGZwEgoX9A SpanReads will come out weekly until Defiant comes out. Skyward episodes air August 31st to September 14th, Starsight from September 21st to October 5th, Skyward Flight from October 12th to October 26th, Cytonic from November 2nd to November 16th, and then Defiant comes out the week after! 5. SPOILERS for Skyward, Reckoners, and Frugal Wizard Brandon has said it’s arguably the case that The Reckoners is in the same fictional world as Skyward. Obviously, since each world has a dimensional multiverse, they could just be in the same multiverse, but maybe it’s more than that: Perhaps in Skyward the humans’ ancestors left earth centuries after the events in The Reckoners occurred. And maybe Calamity was a delver. Unless I’m forgetting something, and I may well be, I see no reason Frugal Wizard couldn’t have happened in the same world as both, after The Reckoners and before humanity left Earth for the stars and Skyward happened. This would require that Epics ceased to exist. Easily possible if we assume Calamity made Mizzy an Epic just before he left. It could be that no one becomes an Epic after Calamity leaves. I admit this possibility is weakened by the remark in Frugal Wizard that Runian had found the only known world to contain anything like magic, but I don’t think that completely refutes the possibility. The definition of magic might be a little subjective. Personally, I’d rather think there continue to be new Epics indefinitely than believe the three series share a universe. Either way, though, they could share a multiverse. What do you think?
  6. On today's news roundup, do you like covers? There are tons of new covers, for Skyward, Mistborn's rerelease, and the Tor edition of Tress. Let's start with Skyward news! Hot off the press, we have a cover reveal for Defiant, the fourth Skyward book, which comes out November 21st, 2023. Cover by Charlie Bowater. What do you all think? Of the US Skyward covers, I think it's probably my favorite. We also have the synopsis: Skyward Legacy If you hadn't heard, Janci Patterson is writing a sequel trilogy for Skyward, which is set after the main Skyward series. We don't have details on release dates, as it's early in the process, but this month, Skyward Legacy Book One has appeared on Brandon's progress bars. It is currently at 4%. Mistborn News: New Editions and Ebooks Getting Leatherbound Changes We haven't reported on this yet, but the original Mistborn trilogy is getting a rerelease in the US as trade paperbacks. The Final Empire and The Well of Ascension were released February 14th, and The Hero of Ages will release on March 14th. These new covers are, without a doubt, my favorite US Mistborn covers: Covers by Danny Schiltz. The Mistborn leatherbounds had a lot of minor wording changes and continuity stuff, and those are the definitive editions. The Tor mass market paperbacks that were last rereleased in 2019 had those changes, but the ebooks were never updated. Fortunately, with the release of these new Mistborn trade paperbacks, the ebooks are now finally getting the updated text of the books! Yay! The ebooks are getting updated with the new covers, too. Hero of Ages' isn't updated yet, but presumably it will when that trade paperback comes out March 14th. We don't have the covers for them, but it seems that all of Era 2 is getting covers in these styles as well. According to Amazon and Coho Books, The Alloy of Law releases July 4th, Shadows of Self on August 1st, The Bands of Mourning on September 5th, and The Lost Metal on October 10th. Additionally, a trade paperback box set of Era 1 arrives April 11th, and I'd expect a similar box for Era 2 this year as well. Tor Tress Edition Cover Lastly, we got a cover reveal this month for Tor's version of Tress of the Emerald Sea, which comes out April 4th. (Uh, hopefully Kickstarter backers all get their physical editions by then.) Here it is! Cover by Carlos Guimerà. That's all for now! What do you all think of these covers, and the Defiant blurb?

I wanted to use my collection of graphite pencils, so this happened! It's based off of the cover art from Skyward, so that's why it might look familiar
  9. It's past midnight Eastern, and my successful book purchase on Google Play says that Starsight is out! That means it's time for full book spoilers. So this is the requisite full book reaction thread!
  10. On Tuesday, November 23, Cytonic is getting released. Yes, there will be spoilers here. I’m making this a few days early so that staff have a day or two to move this thread if they feel the need. I can’t wait for more M-Bot! Yayyyyyy!
  11. I'm just confused about stuff. 1). Does Cytonics exist in everyone or select few 2). How does one use Cytonics 3). What can you do with Cytonics
  12. Which of the main series and novellas is your favorite? How many people agree? Take the poll and find out! Edit: haha, sorry about the typos…
  13. The title of this discussion is pretty self-explanatory. If you could spend the day with a Skyward or Starsight character for a day, who would it be? I've pondered on this for a while and honestly, I'd like to spend a day with Brade; see what her life is like and stuff you know? Maybe learn about how she came to be Winzik's minion and see how she's being treated for being a human on Starsight. Brade isn't one of my favorite characters (nor do I dislike her, just neutral) but she's intriguing enough for me to want to know more about her character. I feel like there's so much more to her--in both personality and history--than what we were shown in the book. I know this sounds like whole lot of stuff, but anyone can learn so much within a single day. Those are my thoughts. How about you guys?
  14. What is your favorite moment in the Skyward series so far?
  15. The pronunciation of Jorgen’s name is a highly debated topic at times, and I’d like to make a poll to see what people think.
  16. I figured that now that the Skyward is out it would need a meme thread. Don't worry, I'll start

  19. Sanderson fans, especially Skyward fans! I just submitted a Lego Ideas set featuring the DDF Poco from Skyward, based on the artwork by Ben McSweeney. If we can get 10,000 votes of support, Lego will consider making it into an official set. Supporting is free, you just have to make an account with Lego. (This prevents people from bot-farming votes for themselves.) Please consider supporting and/or passing this info to friends/groups who might be interested. How you can support this potential set: 1. Go to https://ideas.lego.com 2. Click “log in” link in top right and create an account. 3. Go to the Skyward submission at https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36f34d66-8aa5-4e82-a09b-af966300d379 (or search for poco or skyward) and/or have a look around and find additional projects that you like. You can vote to support as many submissions as you like. 4. On the Skyward submission, click on the yellow “support” button in the top right. That's it! You should have gotten a pop-up saying thank you and suggesting other projects with similar keywords.
  20. Publisher's Weekly has revealed the cover for Bastille vs. The Evil Librarians, the final entry in Brandon's Alcatraz series! Bastille is cowritten with Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas, and is due to release September 20th. Additionally, the print collection of said novellas is out, and Brandon and Janci shared a bit about what Skyward will look like going forwards. Additionally, their article contains release dates for the new editions of the previous books in the series, which are receiving new covers by Justin Gerard to celebrate Bastille finally coming out. (In case you missed it, the new cover for the first book in the series was revealed back in December!) May 3: Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarians July 5: The Scrivener’s Bones and The Knights of Crystallia August 20: The Shattered Lens September 20: The Dark Talent and Bastille And now, we venture skyward! Specifically the Skyward Flight collection released this week! If you've been waiting to buy these in print, you can find links to do so on Penguin Random House's website. It also includes a few sweeteners like character art and deleted scenes. Unfortunately, Skyward beta reader and Janci's friend Darci Cole was originally supposed to help write the next trilogy, but had to step down from the project for personal reasons. Janci and Brandon will both continue to be involved with it, however. Oh, did I not mention the next trilogy yet? Well, on the most recent stream, Janci and Brandon spoke about the plan for the future of the Cytoverse after Defiant (the fourth Skyward novel) releases next year. The current goal is to co-write a second trilogy following characters we already know (they can't confirm which, though we know from the Mini-Con that Kimmalyn is likely in the running). They intend for the books to be dual PoV, with one primary character getting major viewpoints in all of them, and a different second character getting their own plot and main viewpoints each time. However, this is subject to change, as they are still early in the outlining phase. Oh, and of course, we have progress bar updates from the latest Weekly Update video! The first draft of Stormlight Five is about 6% completed, which is about on-track for where Brandon expected it to be. The third draft (which takes into account beta reader feedback) of Secret Project 1 is about 80% completed, meaning prep work for publishing it next January can soon begin. Speaking of the Secret Projects, the Kickstarter raised $41,754,153 from 185,341 backers, easily taking the crown for most-funded Kickstarter with more than double the second place. (However, Exploding Kittens still has it, and every other project, handily beat for the most-backed position, with 219,382 backers.) Who do you think the next Skyward series's viewpoint characters will be? Why are there sharks in the sky on the Bastille cover? Is it just me, or does that airship look like Darth Vader? Find out... uh... whenever the books release, I suppose, but until then, share your guesses in the comments below!
  21. You've been waiting for a physical editions for the three Skyward Flight novellas that came out late last year, and today Skyward Flight: The Collection is out! You can get a hardcover or an ebook with all three of the novellas: Sunreach, ReDawn, and Evershore. The hardcover is just $20 on Amazon (and about the same price on Barnes and Noble), with the ebook at $12. You can also get a signed hardcover off Brandon's store, or get the Gollancz paperback off Book Depository. We found the Skyward Flight novellas to be a fantastic trilogy of stories, and an important part of the Skyward series. Janci Patterson co-wrote these with Brandon, and we felt she did an excellent job. These fill a big hole in the mainline novels, and if you like Skyward, absolutely pick these up. I liked this more than Cytonic too! ReDawn and Evershore are just incredible. I think it is best to read all these either before Cytonic, or directly after Cytonic. So really, at $12 or $20 dollars, you can't go wrong, especially because these three together are longer than any individual Skyward book! Lastly, Janci Patterson will be on a stream on Brandon's YouTube channel tonight, at the usual stream time 6pm Mountain time (5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern), which will go for two hours. You can put questions for the stream in this Reddit thread!
  22. I recently started playing around with Bricklink Studio. It's a really fun software to creatively build things with legos you don't even have! I searched to see if anyone had built M-Bot before and found this forum. The other build is definitely great, but I wanted to give it a go with Studio to see what I could come up with. This was probably too ambitious of a project to start with, but I learned a lot. Building from scratch with every single lego piece ever made as an option to use was a bit much. In the end I'm very happy with my "build" though. As with the other real build, the wings do sweep back and forward as you can see in the pictures. I hope you enjoy! I'm already thinking possible upgrades and how I would change it so I might post more pictures later.
  23. We are incredibly excited to have a special Shardcast where we got to talk to Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas: Sunreach, ReDawn, and Evershore! We talk to her about the process, Evershore, and a bit about future Skyward things she and Darci Cole will be working on after Defiant is out! She is completely lovely we had a blast chatting with her! This episode, we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Jess (LadyLameness), Veronica (Cheyenne Sedai), and of course, Janci Patterson, who is actually on our Discord (https://discord.gg/17thshard) as jancilynne! 24. Ironsides couldn't believe her eyes at the size of the Krell attack. She was used to the Krell rarely varying from their usual numbers when attacking- just enough to be a massive irritation but never so much as to truly wipe Alta off the map. She never had understood why; she was fairly certain the Krell had the numbers to do so. But the fleet of six ships she saw approaching made even less sense. The Krell had to know that the attack was futile. Ironsides smelled a trap, but the attack was still an attack. She radioed into the comm link of an available flight, one of her best. "Shard Flight, I need some fighters for an unusually small skirmish. Who's in?" Welcome to QF55: Battle of Traitors! I will be the GM for this game, and @Araris Valerian will be the IM. Here are the rules for this game, and they're also in doc form: Signups will end in a little over a week on Monday, August 23rd at 7:30AM, PST. The game will begin shortly afterwards with the normal rollover time of 8:00AM PST. I'll be gone camping some of the days during signups but will be back a few days before the game starts. For flavor purposes, this game takes place in an alternate version/timeline of Detritus, before the events of Skyward. RP Characters would benefit from a Callsign. 25. I have been thinking for some time now that Reconers seems like practice for era 3 Mistborn or modern Mistborn, and with the skyward series if that is practice for space age cosmere books. Rhythmatist also seems to be practice for era 3 Mistborn stories. From what I have heard era 3 Mistborn sounds like it will be a world with Superheros similar to Reconers and of Course Space travel in Space age Cosmere and Skyward seem way to on the nose. What do y'all think? Oh and I am more excited for Era 3 Mistborn than any more Stormlight books which, even though I enjoy virtually all his stories, far out weigh the non cosmere off shoots for me.
