  1. Rejoice, Cytoverse readers! The full release of Defiant, the finale to the Skyward series, is coming up soon - just two weeks away, can you believe it? But if you absolutely can't wait those two weeks, don't worry; the publisher's got you covered. Penguin Random House has released a new Look Inside feature for Defiant, which includes the prologue and the first eight chapters of the book. You can read it right here! Keep in mind, though, if you're on the phone - for some reason, the Look Inside is not available in the mobile view of the site. You will have to switch to desktop view in order to open it. Since the previews are out and the book releases so soon, we are getting our spoiler channels and forums up and running. Here, you can discuss the preview chapters (and the full book, once it's out) in the Defiant sub-forum. On Discord, you can do so in the #defiant-spoilers channel. Happy reading!
  2. https://www.tor.com/2017/09/12/oathbringer-by-brandon-sanderson-chapters-7-9/ Happy Reading!
  3. Tor has revealed that the Oathbringer sample chapters will begin Tuesday, August 22nd. How many chapters will they be releasing? Quite a lot: thirty-two chapters, all of Part One of the book. It's a lot of the book, but don't worry, there's so much more of the book after that. Part One is just 26% of the novel, of 1240 total pages. Yup, it's a beast of a thing. Tor will be releasing the chapters slowly, week-by-week, until release. Part One is a fantastic taste of the overall product. Long ago, Brandon said he plotted Oathbringer as a trilogy. That is, that there are three distinct sections of Oathbringer. In Words of Radiance, he also did this, where the first "book" in Words of Radiance was Parts One and Two, the second "book" is Part Three, and the third "book" is Parts Four and Five. And if you have read Words of Radiance recently, you know that each of those "books" has a pretty big climax. Well, for Oathbringer, you can see in that Reddit link, Part One of Oathbringer is its first "book". Get hyped. We will keep you up to date on all of the sample chapters as they appear. Tor will be starting with the full prologue on the 22nd, then on August 29th, Chapters 1 through 3, and eventually, of course, all the way through Chapter 32. Also, Peter has suggested on Twitter that they may release an interlude on audio the week before release. One last thing: Peter isn't entirely certain that epigraphs are coming in the preview. Worry not, as they are definitely in the book! We hope you're excited for Oathbringer. Remember to make sure to keep all discussion on Oathbringer and its sample chapters in our Oathbringer Spoiler Board, and not anywhere else. Thank you!
  4. THE END IS NIGH! Or at least the end of the first draft of Stormlight 3 is almost here. The progress bar on Brandon's site is currently sitting at 98% and should reach 100% very soon. At Wednesday's San Fransisco confirmed that it will be released in November 2017. Unfortunately that is still about a year away. I think last week's release of Edgedancer has helped cut the worst of our cravings, but if it still wasn't enough I have good news. The Unfettered II anthology, originally scheduled to release on December 6th has had its ebook released early, and as we reported earlier, it includes the first FOUR Dalinar flashback chapters! I for one plan on picking it up as soon as I can and there will be a spoiler forum where they can be discuss them soon. In other news forum member @David_Fonti just released a computer animated Stormlight fan film that he and a team made. I really must say, they did a fantastic job. It gives a taste of what a Stormlight adaptation could be, and I hope we see more. In addition to the film itself he's posted a behind-the-scenes documentary on how the film was created which I found quite interesting. Discuss it here!
  5. Hey there Sanderfans, those of us who are also fans of board games certainly have a lot to look forward to! Not only do we have Mistborn: House War (and Mistborn: The Siege of Luthadel) on the horizon but board game company Nauvoo Games just recently announced they will be creating and releasing a board game based on The Reckoners series. Here is their press release: I for one look forward to learning more. If anyone is going to be at GenCon this weekend go say hello! For Alcatraz fans the Tor/Forge blog has posted the first chapter of The Dark Talent (which is only a little over a month away from release)! Check it out here. Now those of you who subscribe to Brandon's newsletter will likely remember he shared this back in January 2015. So it is not new to everybody, but it is still a great chapter and I really can't wait to read the rest of the book. Back in March we reported that Tor Books was releasing special limited edition Stormlight Companion for Independent Bookstore Day. Well the Tor/Forge blog just recently announced that anyone that subscribes to their newsletter will receive a free digital copy of the Companion (people who are already subscribed need to sign up again though). There really isn't anything that fans like us don't already know, but it is a handy little reference book. Finally Stormlight 3 is over 2/3rds drafted! Woohoo!
  6. Tor.com has just posted Chapter 6 of The Bands of Mourning over on their site. Check it out here! This is unfortunately the last preview they will be posting (Peter confirmed as much on Reddit last week) but that just means the release is just around the corner. We are back to Marasi's point of view as she examines the information given to the team about what the kandra have been able to get out of ReLuuur when she comes across a drawing of some sort of creature (I wonder what that is, a Hemalurgic construct as Marasi suspects?). And after a rather reflective conversation with Wayne we get to see the adorable aftermath of Chapter 5 for Wax and Steris. Of course, then there's a cliffhanger, but I don't think any of us are surprised by that. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the preview chapter!
  7. The release of The Bands of Mourning is just under two weeks away and the preorders for the Signed and Numbered editions from Wellers Book Works have just gone up in Brandon's store. Be warned however that Brandon has changed his policies regarding these preorders, the reasoning for which you can read in his blog post here. The short of it is that signing these preorders is a time-consuming process, and it's only gotten more time-consuming as time has gone on and the number of people wanting more extravagant personalizations has increased. As such if you want something beyond just the signature and number the price is going up, with the extra money going as a donation to the Waygate Foundation. I think this is a nice compromise as he was considering doing away with personalizations altogether, but this way people who really want them still can and there is money going towards a good cause. There are two tiers of personalizations. The first, requiring a $5 donation, is for those who would like their name and a short phrase (i.e. "Happy Birthday") or a quote of Brandon's choice (i.e. "Life Before Death" or "Hands All Red"). The second, requiring a $20 donation, is for the more unusual requests, like limericks, drawings, and cosmere questions, as long as the request is within reason. (Do note that Brandon will no longer answer questions like "Tell me something about XXX" you much ask something specific, and even then he may RAFO if the answer is too long.) If you want one of these, there is a limited number, and the deadline for ordering is January 20th! In other news Tor.com is currently holding a giveaway for a copy of The Bands of Mourning here. Unfortunately this is only open to those in the US and Canada. The deadline to enter is January 16th at 12:00 PM Eastern time. Tor.com has also continued releasing previews of Chapters 4 and 5 of Bands. Chapter 4 is from the point of view of Wayne, which is always a treat, and features a great bit of character progression for him. Chapter 5 is back to Wax and features some information about the world outside of Elendel and a great conversation between Wax and Steris. Also don't forget that the Tor re-releases of the Alcatraz series start next month with Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians and The Scrivener's Bones being released on February 16th (the same day as Calamity). Amazon.com has turned on their "Look Inside" feature for these two books giving us a sneak preview of the awesome illustrations by Hayley Lazo. Thank you Peter Ahlstrom for bringing this to our attention! Check out our forum topics here to discuss Chapter 4, here to discuss chapter 5, or here to discuss the Alcatraz illustrations!
  8. Tor.com posted the preview of Chapter 3 of The Bands of Mourning, and good Harmony is it a doozy. Check it out here! I don't want to say too much about it beyond this: a long standing question in the fandom is answered and the main plot of the book is introduced. (Seriously just go read it). In case you missed it on Friday Brandon posted his third annual State of the Sanderson, discussing what he worked on over the course of 2015 and his plans going forward. Check it out here! This tradition has definitely become one of my absolute favorite things about Brandon. He has such a great reputation for transparency when it comes to his work (except of course when it comes to secret projects, but more on that later) and it is lengthy posts like this one that just goes to show how much he deserves that reputation. Before we get into the nitty-gritty details of the State, how about those pages from the White Sand graphic novel Brandon shared with us in his post? It’s been about a year and a half since it was announced that Dynamite would be adapting White Sand into a series of graphic novels, and while we’ve had some progress reports along the way, it is really nice to finally see these pages. Looking at them reminded me of how much I really did like the prose draft I read a couple years ago, it’s a fun story and it looks like a re-read maybe close in my future… The art and the colors just look fantastic, I can’t wait to see how they depict other characters, not to mention certain aspects of the world. Well, Brandon is giving us an estimated release of some time next year, so we don’t have too much longer to wait. Finished books being released in the near future: The Bands of Mourning Brandon wrote this last year, as a surprise to all of us. The Gamma/proofread was done awhile back and the book is on track for its January 26 release (only a little over a month from now!). Calamity Brandon was able to write the rough draft of the final Reckoners book over the course of January to May of this year (which is longer than he had planned on as in the 2014 State he mentioned wanting to finish by the end of March, this in turn has pushed back his other projects). The Gamma/proofread of this has been completed and the book is on track for a February 16 release. Works in progress: Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians Brandon wrote the rough draft of The Dark Talent last year and is currently working on edits for it. Tor originally announced a June release for this book but it has been pushed back (in the State Brandon says it was pushed to August, but Amazon has a September 6 release date). The re-releases are, according to Amazon, scheduled for February 2 (Books 1 and 2), April 5 (Book 3), and July 19 (Book 4). They’re going to have new covers, by Scott Brundage, and interior illustrations by Hayley Lazo. Brandon has also mentioned that the hardcover dust jackets will have a map printed on the inside. Unnamed Secret Novella This is a project that Brandon has been working on for 10 years and finally finished up during revisions over September/October. Not much is currently known about it, but it is coming “soon”. I for one can’t wait for this one to come out. Stormlight 3 This is Brandon’s current main project that he is drafting, and he’s about a third of the way through. He did start writing it, in earnest, in June (which is later than what he had planned in the 2014 State, due to the extended time on Calamity) but it’s been slow going because of numerous revisions for other works he had to work on, as well as a fairly lengthy tour for Shadows of Self. At this point, it is most likely going to be a 2017 release, just because there is so much work that goes into a Stormlight book above and beyond the text itself. Peter, Isaac and co really need the time to get everything done at a reasonable pace (and we really do not want them to stage a mutiny, now do we). There is plenty of Sanderson-goodness coming in the next year (three novels, one graphic novel, plus a potential Stormlight novella and maybe the secret novella project) that I think it will be 2017 before we even notice the wait. Upcoming projects… Arcanum Unbound This an anthology of all the cosmere short fiction published up until now that Brandon has been thinking about doing. He also mentioned during the never-ending AMA that Tor had been wanting to an anthology like this. If Stormlight 3 doesn’t make it out in 2016 (which it probably won’t) this will probably come out as a “replacement” with a new Stormlight novella to help tide us over. He also mentioned wanting to release a star chart of the cosmere as part of this as well, which is exciting, to say the least. He has mentioned wanting to do a star chart before, but I never expected for it to be released this quickly. The Aztlanian Nothing really new on this one, beyond the fact that he is planning on working on it after Stormlight 3. The Lost Metal This is the final Wax and Wayne book, Brandon didn’t have much to say besides that he is planning for it to be one of the three books he writes between Stormlight 3 and 4. New YA Project This is a new YA trilogy that Brandon is developing with Random House as a follow-up (of sorts) to The Reckoners. Brandon doesn’t say too much about it in the State but he did talk about it at the Shadows of Self release party. It is tentatively called “Apocalypse Guard” and deals with a team that travels to parallel universes to prevent world-ending events. It definitely sounds exciting. The first book is planned to be the last of the three books Brandon will write between Stormlight 3 and 4. Elantris sequels These are getting closer to being written. The 2014 State said that they had to be written before the 1980s-esque Mistborn trilogy for “behind-the-scenes Cosmere bits”. This State is currently putting the first as one of the books between Stormlight 4 and 5. That’s still projected out for a release in 2020, but at least we have a rough date! Backburner projects Legion 3 The only news on this is that Brandon is planning on this to be the last Legion novella, and that he doesn’t see himself writing it any time soon. Nightblood No change on this. Doesn’t seem to plan on writing it until at least after the Elantris sequels are finished. Adamant (previously The Lurker) A science fiction novella that Brandon has described as “Silence of the Lambs in Space”. He had mentioned wanting to do a sequence 5 or 6 novellas as a mini-series of sorts for this. Brandon does mention that he is finished and happy with the first novella, but he has no plans to release it during 2016. This is likely because he doesn’t want there to be too much of a wait between it and its sequels and he has no plans to write them in the near future. Since it is a new story/setting there isn’t as much of a push for immediate release. During the summer he did mention that he was contemplating sliding it into the cosmere, but there is no mention of that in the State. Dark One No news on this one. The 2014 State did mention this as a possible follow-up to The Reckoners for Random House, but they and Brandon decided to go with Apocalypse Guard instead. Brandon is working on the outlines though. Death by Pizza This is a project that Brandon recently had a breakthrough with. While it was left out of the 2014 State it was include in the 2013 one (though at the time Brandon seemed doubtful of it ever progressing). No real idea when or if it will be released, though Brandon did pitch it as a follow-up to The Reckoners. Dragonsteel No change on this one, it’s not going to be on the docket until after Stormlight 10. The Silence Divine No real news on this one either. Soulburner This actually another brand new, never before discussed project. Brandon doesn't say all that much about it and it is not coming any time soon. Aether of Night This is an old project, one of the thirteen novels Brandon wrote before getting published. Long thought to be a trunked novel, as various concepts from it were cannibalized for other projects, it seems Brandon is thinking about reworking it for a published release. I'm interested in seeing how this will turn out. Skyward A YA cosmere series Brandon mentioned in the 2013 State, the current status of this is a complete mystery as not only was it missing from last year’s State but this year’s as well. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the preview chapter and here to discuss the State of the Sanderson!
  9. Tor.com posted another new preview from The Bands of Mourning this morning. Check it out here! It picks up soon after the end of the first chapter and has a couple really great conversations between Wax and Steris and Marasi and Wayne respectively. Not to mention I think the hardcore cosmere-enthusiasts among us will be very excited by the last sentence... In other news Crafty Games has released the newest supplement for the Mistborn Adventure Game, Skaa: Tin & Ash. It has been up for pre-order and digital delivery for a couple weeks but the physical copies just arrived in their warehouse the end of last week. They should be starting to send out orders today, just in time for Christmas! I've only been able to read parts of it so far, but it looks like there is a lot of really interesting information in it. It also has another beautiful cover by Tommy Arnold (who did the cover art for Terris: Wrought of Copper). Another exciting thing they are doing is that they made a batch of dice with the Steel alphabet symbol for aluminum (a metal that is /not/ included in the dice set they sell or the kickstarter exclusives) and since Nov 18th and while supplies last they will be including one, for free, in every physical order made through their website. For those of you wondering about what is going on the with the Mistborn board game, the kickstarter, which was originally supposed to take place in October/November, was pushed back out of deference to Team Sanderson and an effort to give the project some breathing room. It is currently planned to launch during Quarter 1 of 2016, possibly late January/early February. The game has also undergone a name change, instead of "Final Empire: A Mistborn board game" it will be titled "Mistborn: House War". Check out our forum topics here to discuss the preview chapter and here to discuss the supplement! Photo credits: Skaa: Tin & Ash cover from Crafty Games product page. 10. The first chapter of The Bands of Mourning has been released on Tor.com, and I didn't see a thread for it yet. Shame on you all ()
  11. Before we get into the main bits of news, Tor.com posted the first preview from The Bands of Mourning on Monday! It picks up several months after the events of Shadows of Self on a very important day. Obviously if you have not yet finished Shadows, do NOT read this as it does reference a very important climactic reveal. This is a really fun chapter, so if have finished Shadows I'd really recommend reading it. Check it out here! In other news the Elantris leatherbound edition, which includes the 10th anniversary revised text, is finally on sale! And the first printing is already sold out... Don't worry about missing out however as a second shipment is expected to arrive in January (not to mention Brandon has mentioned that he wants to keep the book in-stock for at least a year)! This book is seriously gorgeous. I love the use of the Aons on the cover, especially the use of Aon Ela as the center-point of the design (which is entirely fitting given its meaning...). The repeating Aon Ido also makes for a nice border. The inside is equally breathtaking. Include are full-color pages with some of the best cover-art from around the world. It even comes with a ribbon bookmark! If you order the book before the end of the year you do have the option of getting a numbered edition (aside from 1-50 going to various stores that have supported Brandon over the years the numbers will be randomized. So ordering sooner does not necessarily mean you will get a lower number. Also if this edition does well enough Brandon is looking at doing similar editions for Mistborn Era 1 and Warbreaker. Potentially it could go farther and we may one day be able to have the entire Cosmere sequence in matching leatherbound, but only if the demand is there (so seriously everybody, those who can afford it of course $100 isn't cheap, let's show them the demand, shall we?). The leatherbound Elantris is not the only new item in Brandon's store however. The 2015 Con Exclusive, a flip-back hardcover of Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and Perfect State, is up. There are Bridge 4 pendents in bronze and silver as well as a poster featuring the map of Roshar from the Words of Radiance end-pages. There are even Mistborn and Stormlight lanyards. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview and here to discuss the leatherbound edition! Photo credits: Photos of the leatherbound spine and map from Brandon's Twitter. All other photos from Brandon's Blog Announcement.
  12. Shadows of Self is now only a week away! (Or well for most of us). Brandon in a recent blog post has mentioned that in the UK while Shadows is being released in ebook and audiobook form on Oct 8, two days after the US release, the official UK print release will not be until the 15th. On a happier note Tor.com has just posted the next preview chapter, and Harmony is it a doozy. Check it out here! Last Friday we reported that Tor.com posted the cover for Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians Book 5: The Dark Talent. Well earlier today the cover artist, Scott Brundage, posted the full wrap-around version of the art (without any obscuring text) on his twitter. It's pretty cool. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview and here to discuss the cover!
  13. We are still a fortnight away from the release of Shadows of Self but luckily the folks over at Tor.com have posted another chapter to help tide us over. Check out Chapter 5 here! I for one think it is a great chapter, with sequences from all three main viewpoints (Wax, Wayne, and Marasi) that really start to dig into who they are as characters and their backstories. I get the feeling though, that we really ain't seen nothin' yet... Check out our forum topic here to discuss the chapter preview!
  14. Shadows of Self is only three weeks a way! Following on from last week Tor.com has posted Chapter 4. Check it out here. This one picks up right after Chapter 3 leaves off (at an incredibly intense moment). I do have to admit that it was very exciting to finally find out what happened next. In other news Wellers Book Works has posted the pre-order announcement for Signed and Numbered editions of Shadows of Self. This is a great opportunity for fans who won't be able to see him on tour (see here for the full list of events) to get a signed copy. If you want it personalized act quickly as the deadline for personalizations is tomorrow. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the chapter preview!
  15. Shadows of Self is officially less than a month away! (Check our post here to see Brandon's tour schedule.) With the hype starting to tick up Tor.com has posted Chapter 3 (following their release of the prologue and Chapters 1 and 2 a couple months ago). Check the preview out here! (Do note that a version of this was posted as part of 2013's Steelhunt, but this does cover the last of the Steelhunt excerpt. So if anymore previews are posted it will be entirely new material.) In other news Ben McSweeney, cosmere artist extraordinaire, will be doing an AMA over on reddit at /r/fantasy on October 6 (i.e. the release day for Shadows of Self). Ben is the artist responsible for Shallan's Sketchbook pages in The Stormlight Archive, the broadsheets in The Alloy of Law (and Shadows of Self), artwork for Crafty Games' Mistborn Adventure Game, as well as being the illustrator for The Rithmatist. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview, or here to discuss Ben's AMA!
  16. Tor today has released the prologue for Shadows of Self, the sequel to The Alloy of Law. Chapter one and two is now available too! I shall spoil nothing of it here, so you best just read it. You know, if you want. Shadows of Self comes out October 6th in the US and October 8th in the UK. After that, we will get The Bands of Mourning in January. With this plus Stormlight 3 news that Brandon occasionally tweets, the rest of this year will be really fun. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the prologue, here for chapter 1, and here for chapter 2!
  17. One feature I've noticed this site is lacking that other forum sites I've used have is a Post Preview button. It is a means to see what your post will look like without having to actually post it to the site for public viewing. I know I would make heavy use of such a feature to discern whether I've typed all of my brackets correctly for s and
