QF25: Hour 6 - Running 11 a.m. Albert stands before the crowd. “I have seen the light!” he proclaims. “This is what we must do.” He proceeds to pull out a chalkboard. “Tzlim, here,” he marks down an X and circles it, “we tried to lynch. Specifically, myself and Revali. Now, the fact that he escaped means that he’s probably not the killer here, so who is?” He muttered to himself, and drew a few lines away from Tzlim’s name. The others watch. “Of course, Tzlim would never have been attacked at all if it weren’t for Revali’s help. But honestly, I could see Revali or Locke being the killer, and can’t figure out which. But anyway, in addition to that, I think there are a few others, and they could be any of these people-” he circles other markings “-but if anyone else has suggestions I’d be totally open to that.” He continues to mutter and draw. Everyone else blinks at each other. “Albert?” says John tentatively. (Normally, but tentatively.) “How does any of that make sense?” “What? Oh, it just does, trust me, okay?” “...um. No.” That isn't John - who is far too ordinary to say such things - but someone else in the crowd. No one knows who, but they break at that sentence, and surge after the insanity that Albert is obviously capable of. Aleta watches Albert dying in horror, his cries echoing in the bright morning sun. She’d never… that wasn’t… she tenses, almost ready to flee at the sight. “Not a pretty sight, is it, death?” a voice says in her ear. She jumps in shock. When she lands, she is already dead. Melinon can't take it anymore. He runs. Out, away, anywhere but there. Lorna watches, smiling. It won't do for this little experiment to end without anyone learning the lesson they need to. LG33: Term 7, Month 2 - A Stick in a Forest "How are we supposed to find a stick in the middle of a forest?" Sen asked. He had been searching for the better part of 3 hours, looking for a singular stick that everyone apparently wanted dead. "We just gotta snap all of the sticks in the forest. Eventually we will be able to find the right one," Will responded. "Shut up and get back to work, the both of you!" Jack commanded. Although the three of them were each assassins in their own right, after searching in the forest for a while they'd agreed to work together. Jack had become the natural leader among them. "But what if we already snapped the right stick?" Sen responded, not caring about Jack's command. "I mean, we've snapped thousands of sticks already. What if one of them was the stick we were supposed to be snapping?" Jack ignored Sen, knowing that responding would only spur the young assassin on and prompt further questions. A loud crack echoed across the forest, making Sen jump. The other two were much more experienced assassins, and had been prepared for something to happen, but this was Sen's first job. "Now I've lost count," Sen groaned, picking up the stick that he'd dropped. "I'm going to have to-" Jack quickly covered Sen's mouth, not wanting to let whoever else was in the forest know where they were. A small voice seemed to whisper something in the wind. At first none of the assassins were able to make out what it had said. Slightly louder this time, the voice repeated, "Attack!" The trees of the forest suddenly started descending down upon the assassins, the trunks bending at impossible angles, attempting to slam into the trio. They seemed to know who the leader of the group was, too: most of the branches were swung at Jack. Jack was able to dodge the first few branches, but the sheer number of twigs, sticks, branches, and trees made it nearly impossible to dodge them all. One struck Jack in the knees, sending him sprawling, while another quickly descended upon him, silencing him. Will fared slightly better than Jack had, since less trees had attacked him, letting him dive into some bushes for cover. As soon as he'd dived in, however, the bushes started to attack as well. The small twigs aiming for his eyes quickly rendered him blind, allowing a larger tree to finish the attack. Sen dashed across the forest, towards the closest source of light, hoping it was the edge and freedom. He burst out into the light and saw a singular stick sitting in a sunlit glade. Sen knew, somehow, that this was the stick that he had been sent to kill, and he was going to do it. He approached the stick slowly, drawing his knife, prepared to take his first life, when he heard a CRACK. No. He felt it. He looked down to see several holes in each boot near where his toes were, and a few little objects circling around them. What were those? With a sick feeling in his stomach he realized what they were. Small bone fragments. His sick feeling suddenly doubled when the front half of his feet exploded and more bones flew out. The effect slowly worked up his legs, moving from his feet, to his ankles, to his knees, up to his hips. Sen screamed the whole time. Sen passed out, shortly thereafter, from bloodloss and sheer pain. His bones countinued to be dismantled, quickly killing Sen, yet circling the spot where his body had stood. They slowly moved their center and began circling the stick, or Stick, lying in the middle of the clearing. The bones broke off into pieces, as if sharpening themselves. The bones descended in an instant, embedding themselves into every inch of Stick. Then, as if they had never moved at all, the bones fell to the ground in unison and remained on the grassy floor, still streaked with Sen's blood. (All credit for the writeup goes to Drought.) Kipper and Elbereth and I are GMing this game. The game will start one week after this was posted, on Tuesday 29 March. Rollover time will be determined then or between now and then.
MR13: Treachery on the Terris Peaks GMs: Elbereth and Twei History turns and shifts, and a little piece of metal moves just slightly... “Right. You’re qualified, you’re coming. Your bag, please?” The young man froze. “Why do you need my bag?” “Inspection. We need to know if we should provide you with a better bag or if yours is sufficient. Also, extraneous metalminds aren’t allowed. There shouldn’t be a reason for you to have a coppermind, for instance. I’ll be carrying the only one, to record what happens at the Well.” He very reluctantly handed his bag over. “I’m not perfectly packed yet,” he tried. “There’s some stuff that I want to take out...” “Really? I thought you said you were ready to go, right now.” “Well, yes... I mean...” He stopped as she pulled out a metal cylinder. “Don’t open that, please! It’s private.” “Privacy isn’t private when you’re dealing with the protection of the most important man in the world,” commented Tindomë wryly, opening the metal cylinder. It looked to have words printed on it. The young man stayed silent as she read, head hung in defeat. She looked up at him. “‘He must never be allowed to complete his quest’? ‘Alendi was never the Hero of Ages’? ‘Alendi must not reach the Well of Ascension’? This is signed by Kwaan. The traitor!” She threw his backpack back at him. “Get out of my sight. No traitors will be allowed on this mission.” He stared at her with hate. “Very well. But I have friends who are packmen. You can’t stop them all!” He turned and stalked away. “Friends, huh?” she said softly to herself. Unfortunately, Rashek was right. She didn’t have nearly enough packmen yet, and she didn’t even know if she could trust those she’d already accepted. She looked down the long line of hopefuls. Most she could dismiss off the bat, of course. Previous experience as a packman was required, and most of them didn’t even have that. But those who did... She couldn’t turn away a willing hand, even if that hand might turn traitor. She’d just have to try to figure out who was who as fast as possible, and make sure Alendi was protected at all times. Tindomë rubbed her forehead. She’d never thought this was going to be easy, but it wasn’t supposed to involve traitors. She tossed the metal sheet to the ground and beckoned forth the next applicant.
