The Blight is currently attacking for 11. A correction has been made: Lan was a member of Moiraine’s Circle. I noticed I had not informed the thread when going through last cycle’s writeup, so my apologies if this affects anything too much. I just haven’t been a very on-top-of-things GM this game, which I apologise for. A new Creeper of the Blight has appeared: Plague! It will Send Runner D8 unless stopped. Jadis is still alive, and will Send Runner N7 unless stopped. Nailicis and Nogard are still alive, and will Send Runner tonight unless stopped. Screwtape has Sent Runner, and is now dead. 2. Callor stepped out of the thick woods ringing Fal Dara, his white cloak with the golden sun making a splash against the darkly covered thicket that previously enveloped him. He felt vaguely uncomfortable standing there exposed, in the open between two nexuses of evil. The whitewashed tower, with its shiny exterior that fooled most, but was still full of rot within, was closer than the Dark One’s prison. However, Shayol Ghul seemed to emanate his madness. By means of the Blight spreading surely and slowly over the Blasted Lands and encroaching on the northern kingdoms, the Dark One advanced, and a strong hand was needed to intervene that did not belong to Tar Valon witches. And Callor knew whose hand that would have to be. Smiling at his orders from the Lord Captain Commander, he took to the road fully, prepared for his presence to be announced to the Keep he neared. Let them! Agelmar would be as wet clay in his hands when he saw what the Children could do. A few minutes of warning would change nothing. The Light would shine on and protect those who resisted the Dark One at all times. And Pedron Niall stood for the Light. The guardsman on the walls of Fal Dara Keep blinked. A party had appeared, essentially out of nowhere, on a stretch of clear road empty a second earlier. He frowned, motioning his fellows to hold the gates against the newcomers. Peering closer, he was unsurprised to see an Aes Sedai and a Warder among their number, even if the man looked familiar. The guardsman tried to place him, but the name was slippery on his tongue, and he could not grasp it. Those thoughts were driven from his head by the Aes Sedai, who serenely reached into one of her pouches and showed Agelmar’s sigil, a token of entry. Having little other choice, he let the Warder and his Aes Sedai in, glancing at the others as they passed. Mostly youth, though seemingly an Ogier among them, and an older gleeman. He did not know for what purpose they were there, but the woman had flashed Agelmar’s sign, and as such was to be allowed entry. Curious about the new arrivals, but unable to abandon duty, the guardsman contented himself with watching the north road, and the Blight as it crept slowly closer. Pain. Pain was all Aginor felt, from head to toe. A constant reminder of his failure. A constant reminder that his recklessness had trapped him at the surface of the Wheel for three millennia, while eras came and went. The pain stayed with him for all those millennia, and it did not vanish with his release. Yet despite this pain, Aginor was determined to see that his body would have advantages. He straightened, shrivelled skin screaming in protest from the treatment, and looked towards the Spine of the World. His eyes, at least, were sharp enough to see the mountain range clearly, even as far away as they were, and the dark shapes in that direction coming towards him. Squinting, he made a pretense of studying the mountain ranges. Maybe its formations would be the key to finding what he searched for. Somewhere in there lay the Eye. He just needed to come upon it. Aginor chuckled aloud, loud enough for Balthamel, similarly shrivelled, to raise an inquisitive eyebrow. She did not see what he did. Looking directly at him, moving in his direction with purpose, the shadows materialised: a small contingent of Darkfriends came before him, kneeling. Then Aginor truly smiled. It’s been a month-long drought (or should I say Blight ), but welcome to MR32: The Blight Encroaches! This game, if you didn’t catch it from the RP, is a Wheel of Time game set at the end of The Eye of the World. The Forsaken are trying to destroy, overwhelm, or use the Eye to cut off the fledgling Dragon, al’Thor, from using it against the Great Lord of the Dark. Meanwhile, the Light is frantically defending the Eye against the encroachments of both the Blight and Forsaken, and seek to drive them back and kill them to strike a major blow on behalf of the Light. This game will start at Fal Dara Keep and move back towards the Eye as it continues. My co-GM for this game will be Elandera (@Ookla the Rogue). Our Impartial Moderator is @Alvron. All of the rules for this MR may be found here, in this Google doc. If anyone has any rules questions (and I imagine they do), please do not hesitate to ask. I’ll be saving the first post for a player list and rule clarifications. It is worth noting that the rules are not technically set in stone, as the game balance committee might want me to make tweaks, so until they pass the game, consider this ruleset unfinished. That said, I will try to keep all of you updated on the status of the ruleset until it is confirmed. Actually, I lied about that doc having all the rules. I did not address one set of rules: those pertaining to Ooklas. I am aware that the Ooklas are a wonderful festive way to celebrate Sanderson (having assumed the role of one myself), but they can cause issues regarding identity in SE. I’d hate to have mere confusion about names and identities derail lynch discussion or confuse action orders, and as such am placing the following guidelines for Ookla users: 1. If you changed your name to an Ookla, please place your usual name within your title. 2. If you changed both your name and profile picture, please conclude all your posts with a boldfaced line that states your regular name. Players that only changed their name are not required to do this but are strongly encouraged to, to help out your GMs. (You always have our best interests at heart, right? ) 3. Once the game has begun, do not change your name or profile picture any longer. 4. When voting to lynch on an Ookla, cast your vote in the following format: Regular Name (Ookla Name). For instance: “I vote Fifth Scholar (Ookla the White-Cloaked) for imposing pointless Ookla restrictions.” Also, it might help a lot of people could just generally refer to others by their usual names. 5. Please just call me Fifth. My Ookla name is just for RP. Thank you for cooperating with all of the above, and I’m confident that if everyone tries to adhere to it, we shouldn’t have identity-confusion issues. Signups for this game will close Thursday 6 December 2018, at 10:00 PM EST. (Rollovers in general will be around 10 PM EST.) The countdown site is broken, so do math if you need an exact number. 3. Skern Mundy, trader from eastern Wastes For the Shadow had potent distaste Him Aiel had taught The Blight must be fought And its great evil repelled face-to-face Once had a demon attacked his wall, Yet yielding not and standing up tall Mundy it repelled While Rand al’Thor felled Creepers advancing, though they were small Yet a second attempt was then made The forces of the Light, though arrayed To defend each other Instead were smothered And Skern Mundy was slain in the raid A gleeman that rarely did smile A oath to fulfill without guile Why did he appear? The answer is clear: To put his devotion on trial. A face made of hard angles and stone A life of fighting Shadows alone Lan was his real name, the one with a claim To Malkier’s empty, long-lost throne As Warder to Moiraine he would fall Keeping back the great Creatures from all And when Mundy fell, he charged with a yell Killing Creatures, and himself, for y’all. So go kill some people in his honour! Day 6 has begun! It will end in 23 hours’ time at 21:00 EST, or 2 AM GMT (whichever comes first), December the 18th. Steeldancer was attacked, but was protected! Hemalurgic Headshot was attacked by Randuir IsRand (again)! He was actually killed this time and is Roleless. Rathmaskal was attacked by BrEn Memorium! He was Lan! Randuir IsRand was attacked, and died! BrEn Memorium was attacked, and died! The newly summoned Creature, Rathwearsa Mask, was attacked! It survived. The Eye has 36 health remaining. 4. Stopped was Month-Long Drought: dried-up, withered, old. The Blight took her, merciless, Though she was driven in. In, driven, was she though? Mercilessly her taking, Blight, the old, withered-up, dry drought, month-long, was stopped. Month-Long Drought was far past old, past caring The Dark One seemed to her but a man erring And not a great force Without shred of remorse To whom many would spend their lives swearing She took up with Moiraine to advise her Yet never made the woman apprise her As an adviser And none the wiser Others frequently sought to chastise her The conflict would resolve itself one day When six came over intending to slay With Drought surrounded And quickly bounded She turned into the Blight’s latest prey Night 5 has begun! It will end in 23 hours’ time at 21:00 EST, or 2 AM GMT, December the 17th. Droughtbringer was lynched! He was Roleless. 5. “Get the new soldier fitted in liv’ry!” The captain said to the new “deliv’ry.” Jancey was his name He wasn’t the same For in fighting his spirit was shiv’ry But his intuition proved itself keen From the beginning he’d claimed that he’d seen A Darkfriend within Yet thinking him dim Others thought Jancey himself was unclean After three days of frequent complaining Fifi was questioned, with Jancey claiming “Forsaken is she!” And then they did see The fair mask under which she’d been feigning Yet once the Forsaken was nearly dead Between both rivalry came to a head As Jancey stabbed her Fifi gasped, “You cur, I’ll have Aginor kill you in my stead!” Neither watch nor alarm nor the wolf’s howl Could stop Darkfriends from taking up the prowl O’er Jancey in tent Was sung a lament For a young life cut short by play most foul. A Brief Eulogy For the Fourth and Fifth Rings Author: The Green Man “…” Please thank the Green Man for his extensive commentary on this matter. We’ll see him at the Sixth Ring! Hey, at least that first nasty-looking creature bounced off the wall he set up trying to kill one of those Eastern people. Day 5 has begun! It will end in 23 hours’ time at 21:00 EST, or 2 AM GMT, December the 16th. Young Bard was killed! He was a Fal Dara Warrior. Hemalurgic Headshot was attacked, but the attack was deflected. STINK has been pinch-hit by A Joe in the Bush! Please welcome Joe. Everyone else, please maintain a good level of activity. I understand it’s difficult with finals and holidays and busy lives, but a more active populace makes for a better game. The Eye has 36 health remaining. The current layer of defence has 6 health remaining, and is the Sixth Ring. The Blight is currently attacking for 10. Two Creepers of the Blight have appeared! Their names are Nailicis and Nogard, and they will Send Runner N6 unless stopped. Screwtape is still alive, and will Send Runner D6 unless stopped. In addition, Wormwood is still alive, and will Send Runner N5 unless stopped. Poxx has Sent Runner, and is now dead. Randuir IsRand will continue attacking people tonight unless stopped. Shifting Shadows shifted in the shadow Of a shifting and shadowy night The shifting moonlight did cast shadows On a shifty and Shadow-filled Blight As the shadows shifted all around him, Shifting Shadows, shadowed by the shifting Of the wolves who in shifts watched the shadows For shifty Shadowspawn listening, Was shifted from his place by a shadow Which shifting, shadowed forms failed to find And the stain spreading on Shifting Shadows Would have shifted a Shadowspawn’s mind To shift away from the man in the shadows, Whose blood shifted on shadowy ground, Shift towards the triumph of the Shadow Whose shadowed servants were shifting around. 8. Elak Dehlin, a man of great power In his riches he hated the Tower As he helped Moiraine He grew less insane Yet his expression was always dour. He despised witches within Tar Valon Yet he and Moiraine had started to bond ‘Gainst Callor’s advice (Which really was nice) He started helping guide her course along. Yet he too was a merchant in the North, And his dyes and his woollens he brought forth He sold quite a few But even he knew He stayed for people, and not money’s worth Despite all this he often was blamed Seven men stepped forward and him named Though only three stayed, The others were swayed And Dehlin was consigned to the dark flames. I’m very sorry rollover took so long this time. The blame for this can be placed entirely at my feet. I’ve set rollover at 22:00, later than I usually am awake past, especially to be staying up until 23:00 or 23:30 organising cycle results and posting the new thread, after doing the writeup. The initial reason for this was that I had schoolwork and finals coming up like many others, and pushed rollover back so I’d have enough time for those; however, the havoc it’s wreaked on my sleep schedule, considering I get up before 5:00, simply isn’t working anymore, and I fell asleep compiling rollover last night. To solve this problem, I am moving rollover to 21:00 EST (2 GMT), one hour earlier. I sincerely apologise if this messes with everyone’s schedules, but this seems the best way for me to find a balance of time. To account for the delay, and change in rollover times, this cycle will be extended to end Thursday the 13th (which conveniently solves another problem that had complicated 21 EST rollover for me, namely, 19:30 church which takes a while). Result PMs will be sent in a little bit. With all that being said.... Night 3 has begun! It will end in less than 48 hours’ time at 21:00 EST, or 2 AM GMT, December the 13th. 9. One year ago The Great Lord stirred. Ishamael could tell how weak the seals truly were, after three thousand years of wearing away. The cuendillar was brittle enough that he would be able to escape into the world again. Freedom, a wonderful feeling after eternal sleep in the Pit of Doom, sealed by Lews Therin and his Companions so long ago. But unlike his previous sojourns, this one would be permanent. He slammed at the stone with a glove coated with the True Power, seeming to weaken it further, enough. Seizing what little of saidin he could through the walls of the prison, he tore a gateway out of the mountain. Yet this time, no tendril of the One Power linked him to it. After three millennia of sleep, the Chosen would emerge from Shayol Ghul, to do the Great Lord’s bidding. Perhaps Aginor and Balthamel had been freed first, but Ishamael intended to perform the most important task he had been set: to find, and kill at last, the reincarnate Lews Therin. And he knew exactly how. Giving utterance to a laugh that echoed in the valley of Shayol Ghul, Ishamael raised his hands, feeling saidin flow through him, the taint of the Great Lord’s counterstroke sliding off the barrier erected by his own power. The Blight bristled, surging, sensing the strength of its master. Southward it swept with renewed fury. The touch of the Great Lord had returned to the world. Now A renewed fury it indeed was. Callor stood, the middle hours of the night being the lot he had drawn for the watch. Around him, he could see the Blight’s tendrils snaking their way towards the camp at impossibly fast speeds. Having grown accustomed to repelling the things from two days of experience—had it only been two days under the witch’s Warder’s tutelage? it seemed so long—Callor drew his sword, setting his feet in a stance that allowed him mobility and flexibility. Moiraine may be a Darkfriend, he mused wryly, but this Lan fellow may be worth keeping her around. Wonder what made him decide to join with the witches? The stance he assumed was mirrored in the poses of the other soldiers—clearly, he was not the only one instructed in the usage of such a posture. The Creepers advanced, attacking, and Callor moved into the familiar stances. The Boar Rushes down the Mountain. The Courtier Taps his Fan became Parting the Silk became Heron Wading in the Rushes. One form to the next, blocking, attacking, fighting against the Shadow. Perhaps he had underestimated the Borderlanders’ toughness after all. He could see why warriors came here, came to wage war against the Dark One. Standing there, striking down Creepers on the right and left, his arms never seemed to tire of striking for the Light, his legs seemed as though they would hold him up forever, though thousands fall around him. Each tendril of shadow he struck down was a victory for the Light. Each overhanging branch of rotting vegetation, each rank weed, each insect which occasionally flew like a magnet straight towards him, each that was struck down delayed the Shadow. Callor even then ceased to think, to contemplate anything but the forms, to lose himself in the joy of striking a blow for the Light. It had seemed like an eternity later. Moiraine Sedai had assured him it had only taken ten minutes for him to go weary, for his defence against the encroaching Blight to no longer carry its full effectiveness. According to the witch’s account, which was delivered with little emotion, Alkoo had elected to throw himself among the vast carpet of Creepers and tendrils, sacrificing himself to spare Callor from suffering the same fate. Callor could not fathom why anybody would die for him. Light, he’d not, given the chance. He had tried asking Lan, but he’d simply responded with, “It is every man’s right to decide when to Sheathe the Sword.” Flaming lot of good that’d been! Moiraine arched an eyebrow, and Callor realised he’d spoken aloud. Covering his mouth and reddening, he retreated back into a silent brooding at the table, thinking of Alkoo. The image of the Ogier, with a sad smile on his face, vanishing into the cloud of Blight make Callor shudder, yet he could not look away, just that section repeating in his head over and over, the Blight slowly advancing. Though it seemed to be going at a less vigorous pace than before, there was no question that it was creeping up, and that they had lost a layer around where Moiraine Sedai thought the Eye was. From Callor’s view, there were only 6 layers left before the Eye itself was breached. He sent a silent prayer to the Light they would last that long. Day 3 has begun! 10. Exepins pushed pen to paper, recording supplies for Lord Agelmar. No, not him. His imbecile apprentice Aliath was performing that service for the lord, now. No, he was in the Blight now, recording for Moiraine Sedai, tallying the food they all had in reserve. It was easy work, if arduous, and Exepins’ mind wandered. The camp had certainly had its share of battles since reaching the fringes of the Blight. It had begun with the attack on him, of course, the aftereffects of which Moiraine’s healing could not fully dispel. His head still ached, with the Dark One’s own will seeming to try to split it in half, part of what was dragging this blasted paperwork for so long. Then the attack on the village youth. Exepins always was saddened to see such men die. He had seemed like a good lad, one that would have been a hardy captain had he stayed in the Borderlands with them, disciplined and focused—and strong. He shook his head, refocusing on the pile of papers on the floor of his tent with a grimace. The injury, and recent events, must have really gotten into him if he was letting his mind run off during scribing. Setting to his papers with a vengeance, he banished all thoughts from his head, setting his mind to the task of finishing up. Only then could he rejoin the others. The others were discussing the best way to kill him, conversing in indignant whispers. “He’s clearly still a Darkfriend. I mean, just look at how he’s not even talking to us! Any man with a true fear of the Light would be begging for us to examine him!” “Aw, stuff it, you sound too much like that dolt Whitecloak. He’s a Darkfriend from his survival! It’d take the Dark One’s own luck to live through a thumping like the one I gave him yesterday.” A muted chortle followed the statement, and was quickly extinguished. Callor’s voice could be heard as well. “Anyone a witch like that Moiraine figure offers healing to must be a fellow Darkfriend. That is the reason we are killing him, the reason I sent two people to distract Moiraine with talk of ter’angreal, yes? Let’s figure this out.” A sigh emanated from the group. “What, then, do you propose? If we simply kill him, Moiraine will be no less displeased. And we can’t exactly fail to be traced to any murder that did happen with him.” Callor’s eyes could have frozen a candle flame. “I have a plan.” The Blight did not think. Not in the way that a man thought, at least. But it did know exactly what it wanted—to advance. To swallow whole. Such were its limitations, and its advantages. But it constantly sought a new path, a way around the flashing swords of the humans that kept its creepers and tendrils at bay. It found one at last, a small barrier in place in one patch of ground, a weakness it could break through. Two, actually. The Creepers coagulated, forming a rough hammer which crushed the layers of dirt separating the Blight from a shallow trench that had been dug quickly. From the two holes it rushed in, Creepers swallowing the trench with a speed that defied the eye. Eventually, the Creepers met in the middle, unable to further advance out. Yet a rough circle had been created, and its interior was vulnerable. And within the circle stood a man in a tent, hunched over his scribework, blissfully unaware that camping out so close to the Blight had been a poor choice. Exepins’ fellow warriors watched as the Blight eagerly swallowed the circle: land, tent, and the man they believed to be a Darkfriend. Except, of course, that he wasn’t. Night 2 has begun! 11. “The Light is our refuge and strength,” Callor whispered to himself, face buried in his hands, “a present help in calamity and shadow.” Outside, the night was split by the cries of wolves. Callor remained in his small tent, not daring to venture out. “Therefore we will not fear though the ground collapse, though the Spine of the World be moved into the Aryth Ocean, though its waters roar and foam to flood the coastland at its swelling.” The wolves’ cries grew more frantic. Callor could hear human voices mingled with them. He hunkered further down. “There is a land whose rivers make glad the city of the Light, the holy habitation of the Creator.” Definitely a battle, then. Or at least a skirmish. Callor did not understand why wolves were involved, though. The filthy creatures must have been summoned by a Darkfriend. “The Creator is in the midst of her; she will not be moved; the Dragon will help her when morning dawns.” A human, in the direction of the howling, screamed. As Callor listened, heart thumping in his chest, one of the wolves’ howls ended in a whimper, and a second was cut off. “The Shadow raged and kingdoms tottered, the Dragon’s voice sounded, and the earth melted.” The rest of the camp was awake now. Callor could hear the witch’s Warder calling orders to the Fal Darans, who had rushed out to help. He, however, sat, paralysed by fear and indecision. “The Light is with us, and the Creator is our fortress. Behold, the works of his Dragon, and the Breaking he has unleashed upon the earth.” A Breaking. Callor felt as if his world was breaking, certainly. A battle raged outside, yet for once, Callor did not know where the Darkfriends lay in the conflict. Hot tears spilled down his cheek. Outside, yelling, the sound of swords unsheathed. “For at his coming wars shall cease to the ends of the earth, the spears broken and the chariots set to fire.” The commotion was dying down, now. The keening of wolves had dimmed to a cadence which seemed almost mournful, reverent. What had happened outside? He could not say. Why wouldn’t his legs work? “Be still; know the Light‘s eternal presence; it shall be exalted in the earth, even in the Darkfriends shall it be exalted! The Light is with us, and the Creator is our fortress” Callor set down the book, gently, solemnly; it had served its purpose. Slowly climbing to his feet, he cast aside his tent flap. Peering outside, he saw nothing to suggest a battle. No corpses littered, except a few of the wolves, and those were little loss. Moiraine and Lan were up, and the witch’s circle brooded furiously around her, muttering about ta’veren and bad timing. The witch herself looked stricken, her eyes on a corpse under the two wolves. A man with golden eyes. Day 2 has begun! It will end in 22 hours’ time at 22:00 EST, or 3 AM GMT, December the ninth. Devotary of Spontaneity was killed! 12. Flanked by two of Agelmar’s soldiers, Callor trudged over the rocky ground, setting a brisk walk to keep up with the horses. The party was moving northeast, towards the Spine of the World, and the Light alone knew what lay behind their lofty peaks. Or within them. From what the witch in charge of the expedition had told them, she intended to march into the Blight and into the mountains! And yet how many still refused to believe that Tar Valon was in league with the Shadow? More likely, this “Moiraine Sedai,” as he was forced to address her, would drag the lot of them to the pits of Shayol Ghul as soon as lift a finger. Her Gaidin scanned ahead, as if watching for threats, but Callor sneered at his back. Threats! Ever since entering the fringes of this Light-forsaken land, the evil plants and creatures which the Warder has instructed him to stay away from, as if lecturing a small child, all but parted for the Tar Valon witch. The sorceress claimed it was the protection of the Light. Callor snorted. The day the Light protected an Aes Sedai was the day he threw down his sunbeam cloak and renounced Niall’s authority. And that would never happen. Such were Callor’s thoughts as he strode briskly beside the Fal Daran escort. He should have been sweating, as spring was well-advanced, yet the world seemed locked in winter. Undoubtedly more of the witches’ meddling, or the Darkfriends. Though what was the difference? He kept his eyes on the road in front of him, determined not to trip in front of all the men. And saw an odd creeper approaching. Skirting the witch, as he had known it would, the Creeper took a winding path around her. A path, Callor realised with a start, that was headed directly for him. If the tales about it were true, a touch could kill. Yet he was too slow; the plant was locked in on its target. He drew his sword in a flash of steel, prepared to cut it down in a last act of defiance. As he raised the thin blade, an even thinner trailer of fire shot out of seemingly nowhere, cooking the Creeper to a crisp. He looked accusingly at Moiraine, beginning a protest that he was about to handle the threat himself, thank you very much. It died on his lips. The witch looked deeply disconcerted. Even from a distance, he could see her eyes, which darted between the ragtag villagers, an accusing glance for each. Callor felt a small satisfaction from that. If one of the witches was unsure as to what happened, it must have been a blow on behalf of the Light. Resuming his walk at a jaunty stroll, Callor hummed to himself, confident that even in the awful situation he had been placed in, the Light would prevail. Exepins had hardly been a warrior in his past. A new recruit to the Borderland army, yet easily surpassing 40 years, he put his given history as a scribe to good usage for Lord Agelmar. Taxes, legal documents, decrees to announce, all had gone through him, somehow. Now stuck with Moiraine Sedai as the company’s leader, Exepins had no choice but to continue his work. He found it peaceful, a more sedate job in a camp often filled with rush and noise. However, the quiet job began attracting rumours regarding his motives towards the others. Determined to execute their own justice, three men came to him, determined to find answers. “You, scribe,” one said, hands on hips. “We didn’t see much of you at the barricades against the Blight, where we were talking about how to end this situation,” a second chimed in. The third was the boldest, and surprised Exepins. They denounced him as a Darkfriend, without a scrap of evidence, and little consistency at all. “We have decided that your punishment for being a Darkfriend is death,” he finished, rolling up the “list of charges.” Exepins’ head spun, and his head could hardly register the words the man was saying. However, his brief combat instincts kicked in. As the first man swung a heavy club in his direction, he ducked, letting it whoosh harmlessly over his head. The second club connected, unfortunately, bringing numbness, then blinding pain in the back of his head. From the crunching sound his head had made, his skull was likely cracked. It would be too late, all over…he slumped against the sickly rock wall, laying down. The commotion summoned an irate Moiraine Sedai, fury etched into every line of her face. She stepped over Exepins to face the three men. Exepins squinted. In a corner of his brain, he could see and hear the three being berated, Moiraine’s ice-cold anger chilly enough to cleave through metal. However, the majority of his head simply ached. His vision was dimmer...Moiraine turned to him, kneeling and handling his head. A flash of cold washed through him from the Healing, then shivers. By the time those had abated, Exepins was already asleep. Asleep, but alive. Night 1 has begun! It will end in 22 hours’ time at 22:00 EST, December the eighth. 13. Callor walked into Lord Agelmar’s reception chamber, the door closing behind the Borderland lord with a thud that had the note of finality in it. Walking towards the chair on which the leader of Fal Dara sat, he bowed his head, then straightened. Though his only loyalty was to his Lord Captain Commander, Callor had to respect the man in front of him, and he deserved at least the bow Callor granted him. While Callor had seen his share of battles, fighting in the Children’s conquests in Altara and Murandy, he hadn’t been molded by the constant war that surrounded the men here. Around the Blight, everyone was simply...tougher. The weak died before their time, leaving only the sturdiest of men to defend their homes from the cursed Shadow. And Agelmar was clearly among the sturdiest, with a calloused grip that spoke of a career with the sword, and a scar on his left cheek saying the same. “Lord Agelmar,” Callor nodded again to him, then to the servants. “I have been sent with a message from the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light, Pedron Niall, may the Grace and Favour of the Light shine forever on his reign. ‘Thus saith the Lord, the Lord Captain Commander of hosts: Yet once a little while, and I will shake the heavens and earth, the seas and the dry land. Behold, the Lords whom ye seek shall suddenly be come into the Borderlands, and the messenger of the Whitecloaks in whom ye delight shall be revealed in the day of his coming, saith the Lord Captain Commander of hosts. All the nations like sheep have gone astray, and I shall gather them back into my fold, beginning with your cooperation, Agelmar.’” Callor winced. The Lord Captain Commander was not a man to put on pretenses. Was the message he got compromised? He quickly squished the thought. He would obey orders. He, in fact, had to, which included bracing himself for Agelmar’s response. The Lord of Fal Dara stood slowly. Drawing himself to his full height, which was slightly less than Callor’s, he began pacing towards him. Callor was unsettled by the man’s steady strides, but he could not back away without losing face, and he said nothing as Agelmar drew up next to him. Then, faster than Callor’s eye could track, one second Niall’s message was in his hand, the next it was in many shreads, tattered and scattered across the floor. “Out!” Agelmar roared. “Out, and take your precious Commander’s words with you! They stain my floorboards.” He gave a hefty kick to the pile of torn paper, sending it fluttering and scattering in the air. Callor felt fury gnaw at him. Someone dareddisrespect the Children so callously? He pivoted as if to go, leaving the paper shards scattered on the floor, then halted in the middle of his turn, voice filled with thick wrath. “The Commander’s words will stay here, my Lord. And you will choke on them.” With that, he strode out, careful not to be perceived as walking too quickly. He must, after all, project the Children’s strength. The doors to his chamber closed, and Agelmar let out a long-building sigh. First Moiraine Sedai, a welcome guest if a remarkably self-assured one, and then the Whitecloak, with a message straight from that pontificating fool Niall. It had been all Agelmar could do to avoid disaster in both the meetings. Negotiations with the Aes Sedai has been particularly difficult, with Moiraine making things very clear that she had an agenda she intended to see to completion, not even telling Agelmar what beyond saying that it led to the Eye. He had managed to convince Moiraine to accept the escort of soldiers he offered as she approached the Eye, but the Whitecloak was an unresolved issue, even without the dire message he carried. Then Agelmar’s eyes lit up. The escort. Of course. “Aliath,” he snapped to his scribe, who jerked his head up. “Dictate an order for the Whitecloak Emorle Callor to be sent with the escort to the Eye.” It was perfect. Two birds with one stone, as Moiraine would have to be wary around a Child of the Light, and the Whitecloak would likely be dead after a few days in the Aes Sedai’s “care.” Either way, both problems were minimised for now. Agelmar turned back to his desk, studying the map of the Blight. It was time to turn his mind to the most important matter. The eternal matter. Defence against the Shadow. Day 1 has (finally) begun!
