  1. MR24: Baleful Eye Mirialis was a large city, as far as cities went in the Fractured States. It had another name before Calamity, of course. But after the Capitulation Act, when the High Epics began to carve their own little empires out of what had been the American Heartland, things had changed. A lot. Steelheart ruled in Newcago. Regalia in Babilar. Perseus in Persepolis. Lightwards in his Empire of Light. In Mirialis, that meant Balelight. She was an elusive figure, even in the city she ruled. She made sporadic public appearances, in her impressive uniform and demonstrating her Epic powers that could blast a man dead at half a mile away, or burn an office tower to nothing in mere minutes. But nobody saw her outside of those appearances. Her lieutenants, many of them powerful Epics in their own right, did the same thing. Anonymity was the rule of the game in Mirialis. Of course, that meant that anyone you met on the street could be a powerful Epic, the upholders of stability in a land that had fallen into chaos, in disguise. Or they could be a subversive dissident intent on undermining the rightful order of things. Or, from another point of view, anyone you met on the street could be a fanatical informant serving the brutal and oppressive regime, or a valiant freedom fighter attempting to bring the criminal rulers of the city to justice. Points of view were tricky that way. Push them just a little bit, and everything looked different. Either way you looked at it, talking to any of them could get you killed. Deliberately avoiding them probably would too. So the citizens of Mirialis went about their daily business in silence. Fearful deference to each other was the standard approach to whatever interaction could not be avoided. So it had been for ten long years since Calamity appeared. Hopefully it would stay that way. After all, living in fear was a sight better than not living at all. Welcome to MR24: Baleful Eye! This game will be co-GMed by Elbereth and I. This game is being run as a blackout game, sometimes also called a Closed Setup. For those who may not be familiar with the term, it means that there will be no information given about the available roles, abilities, or win conditions present in the game. Just a warning - this game, more than any others I've run, may not be balanced. I hope, however, that it will be fun. Expect shenanigans... No...seriously. I meant what I said. No information about the setup will be given. Even what the teams are called. *Sigh* You still here? Still not going to say anything. Nothing at all. You really want to know, don't you? Well then, I guess you'd better sign up and play! Signups for this game will last until Saturday, August 12 at 10:00 AM, Mountain Daylight Time. Cycles will be 48 hour combined Day/Night, and turnover time should be the same time as the end of signups. No guarantees, though. 2. MR24: Cycle 5 - Guns and Knives It took a while for Cranium to abandon his Quantum Shooter for a smaller gun he stole from one of the corpses. There were rival epics to kill! He could always build another Quantum Shooter. He was, after all, a genius. He reached the fight just as Balelight was killing another Epic. “Blathering irritates me. And as far as I can tell, the enemies to my rule have still not been found. Let this be a lesson to you all. Every time that you do not bring me a suspect or kill them yourselves, someone in this city will die. Perhaps many people. Do not test me.” The Epic that was in Balelight's grip collapsed onto the ground. Cranium's head jerked left and right. All around him there was chaos. Who should he go after first? Starshatter spoke up from the edge of the fight. "Hey you! You seem suspicious." She pointed to Cranium. "I don't want Balelight killing me! I say we kill that guy." A chorus of agreement followed. "Gah!" Cranium shouted, pointing his gun at Starshatter. Why was everyone going after him? There used to be a time where he could attempt murder in peace. But before he could do anything, time froze around him. "It would be inconvenient if Balelight decided to kill me," Mark said. Cranium would've jumped if he could move. He didn't even notice this quiet man before. But it turned out the quiet man had quite a big weapon. One that he held up with no trouble at all, as if it was almost floating off the ground. Underneath it were circular objects that let out a faint glow. Mark fired his shot, and Cranium flew backwards as it hit, time suddenly restarting. He landed on the ground, and the air flew out of his lungs. Huh. That was interesting. Anti-gravity mechanics on a weapon. I should add that to his Quantum Shooter, Cranium figured. He had never come across those before. Such a wonderful invention. Maybe there was more inspiration to be found in the world that so cruelly accused him of being a mad man. Cranium thought that maybe he should roam around outside of his lab- and outside of his head- more often. Then his eyes closed, and they did not open again. “Balelight?” asked a girl. “It is an absolute pleasure to be of your acquaintance.” Balelight ignored her after that. She wanted a report, not someone trying to get close to her for their own gain. After a moment’s indecision, she turned her eyes on the girl. She didn’t need any more power-hungry Epics hanging around. Unfortunately, the girl dove and disappeared through some sort of portal. Pity. I’ll have to deal with her later. Her knife flew out at Balelight as the portal closed, and Balelight arched an eyebrow. Did the girl know nothing? The knife bounced off harmlessly, of course, and Balelight turned her attention to others. Out of another such portal, an Epic appeared, this one with only a single eye. It took him some time to notice her, floating above him as she was, but he seemed remarkably casual. She didn’t pay much heed to him, though, until he took out another minor Epic, one she’d had in her court for quite some time. Balelight smirked as he pulled out actual weapons, as if those would do anything to her. “Your move, White Queen.” She’d always liked that name. “You seem to have an interesting skillset. I will give you a choice, Epic. Run, now, and vanish into one of those portals, or serve me. I give you an hour to decide.” “And if I run?” the Epic challenged. “You die as soon as I lay eyes on you again,” Balelight said, smiling. “I trust that this situation,” she gestured to the mess of people below, “will be taken care of properly, and I shall be disappointed if I find that it is not.” With those words, she ascended back through her shaft of light. A disturbance would not sour her flying. Later... Starshatter and Birdrider were flirting, as per usual, when Birdrider flinched. “Are you alright?” Starshatter asked. Birdrider didn’t respond. Instead, she slowly, gently began tipping over, and crumpled to the ground. “Birdrider!” Only then did Starshatter see the bullet in the back of Birdrider’s head. “No,” Starshatter said numbly. “No. No.” She raised her hands, bringing the full force of her powers to bear. Lava began bubbling up all around her, turning the ground into a patchwork of molten rock and scorching heat. This lasted until a second bullet took her between the eyes. Impulse ran, and ran, and ran. Someone had been coming with a knife, almost so close that he would’ve actually made it. But Impulse had noticed. The poor guy probably thinks I’m invisible and is still hunting for me, he laughed to himself. He passed shops and taverns, even cutting through a few so fast that no one even noticed the doors opening and closing. He passed between a couple dancing under Calamity’s light, shaking his head at them, and finally arrived in another alleyway. It was far from the previous one, and he started fiddling with one of his devices again in the quiet of being alone. The knife hit him in the back of the neck. But- but… His last thought flickered out. Winter Devotion has died! They were the Epic Lavalake, and a member of the Epic Cabal, with powers of Lava Summoning and Liquid Transmutation! 3. Day 3 - Hydroplaning Under the fear of Balelight's proclamation, the citizens quickly turned into an angry mob. Rashers had been watching the whole proceedings with unbridled glee, and jumped in front of the crowd, taunting them with thick slabs of bacon. It was the work of a moment to get a howling mob rushing after you, thirsting for your blood, he thought. How exhilarating. Now to find a suitable target. And there it was. Crossing the street ahead was Jon; Jon, who had drawn the ire of the crowd earlier for his comments against the Epic Falchion. How somebody criticizing a man who was murdering hospital patients could draw fire from other Vanillas was beyond him; but he'd take what he could get. The road began to get wet, first just damp spots, as if it had been raining, then a thin film of water over the surface. Rashers tossed the bacon aside, and with it went his assumed name. Hydroplane laughed. Jon was right in front of him - hadn't even looked up. With a twist of his fingers, the water on the street formed into a mass under his feet, and he rode it - like a surfboard - slipping expertly around the unfortunate man and up into the air. Behind him, the Jon cried out in pain as the crowd trampled him. Well, he'd caused enough chaos for today. Now it was time to get out of here before Balelight saw him. Their last meeting had been...less than pleasant, and he was in no mood for a second. *************************** Silver Feather walked slowly back from the hospital, trying to avoid notice. He had been sure those lizard cocktails were going to be just the thing! He still didn't know what he'd done to draw the ire of the Epic rulers of the city, but with luck, they didn't 'notice' him further. His luck was elsewhere today. He found himself dragged aside into an alley, confronted by an Epic with a blue-and-yellow facemask and a stylized design of a lightning bolt. "So, Feather. Fomenting rebellion in the city again, I see? We warned you what would happen if we caught you again." Feather gulped, his hair standing on end. Static electricity popped in the silence. "I wasn't doing anything, honest!" "Silence, you traitor!" There was a loud *crack*, and Feather's body slumped to the ground. The Epic smiled. One less malcontent to worry about. *************************** The sniper sat on his perch, watching the scene of chaos at the hospital. Grimly, he sought out his target. It was a shame, really, Altea Meza had to go if Balelight was ever to be thrown down. He pulled the trigger right as she jumped out of the way of a...sword-wielding Epic? Without watching to see the results, he jumped down and began to slip away. If Epics were working that blatantly, the success of his mission required him to be far away. Fast. Altea Meza could wait for another day. ------------------------------------------------ Day 3 has begun! It will end in roughly 48 hours. 4. Day 2 - Inquisition As the celebration died down, a massive explosion shook the center of the city. Town Hall shook, and for a moment, it looked as if it was about to collapse. Luckily, no one was hurt. Balelight's ire was tremendous. Her eye-beams left scars of destruction along the sides of the skyscrapers in downtown, steam curling up from vaporized metal and concrete. Without warning, she was gone. Her lieutenants gathered the townsfolk together, giving them orders to find and root out whoever had done this. If they didn't find the perpetrators, there would be consequences. ------------------------------------------------ Day 2 has begun! It will end in roughly 48 hours. You may now vote on each other for the lynch. If there is a tie in votes, then one of the targets will be chosen at random. A player cannot be lynched unless they have 2 or more votes.
