  1. So, we know that Shallan has earned her blade by book two via oaths. This is demonstrated when she lends her Blade to Kaladin in the Chasms. However, this was demonstrated after she swore her truth of killing her father and before admitting to killing her mother. So, when did she earn her Blade, because she needed to swear two truths and the First Ideal to earn her Blade. So, my question is, what was the other truth, and when did she swear it?
  2. Hoid has bonded a Cryptic. Now to progress through his “oaths” he must speak truths about himself. What truths might Hoid speak about himself? I assume must be truths he hasn’t already said, even to himself. I don’t think we have enough information even to guess, except maybe for one truth about this immortal being surrounded by mortals who cannot understand him: “I am alone.” I doubt he will say that, but it’s my only guess. What do you think?
  3. Hello, I have been rereading ROW and trying to focus on some of the Radiants with less screen time. We see that Gaz, like all of the other members of Shallan's Deserters has joined the Unseen Court and presumably bonded a Cryptic. I remembered that Brandon said that if Elokhar had been allowed to progress with his oaths he would have had to eventually admit to being a bad king. We know more about Gaz than any of the other new Lightweavers, so I tried to guess some of his Truths. I imagine his first truth (besides the oath) would be about his gambling. Admitting that an addiction is real and out of control is the first step after all. Gaz reads as a pessimist because he is always complaining and expects the worst from people, but he is one of several people to become inspired after seeing Shallan's drawing of them. I imagine another early oath might be admitting that he actually can become a better person, like in the drawing. However I think that a later oath (4th or 5th) would have to be him admitting his culpability in the deaths and mistreatment of the bridgemen. We see in WOK that he is bothered by what he is doing and in WOR when he explains it he is quick to pass the blame onto Sadeas and his superiors. This oath is the one I would be most interested in seeing on screen, either the actual swearing or a scene where he apologizes to the bridgemen and its made clear that this is part of him admitting truth. He may also have to admit to his cowardice Tib
  4. Basically what the title says. RoW spoilers. Unless I'm missing something, Shallan's 3rd Ideal was acknowledging that she killed her father - then she used Pattern as a Blade in WoR. Her 4th comes at the end of WoR, the death of her mother, and Radiant (who seems Shallan's way of bypassing the 4th Truth) has Plate in the battle of Thaylen Field. Then the truth about Testament would be her 5th. But there are still things for her to overcome. Even if Radiant is a mask to hide from the 4th Truth (and only merging her back would give Shallan full access to the Plate), there is the question of her family's relation with the Ghostbloods and how she bonded Testament in the first place. It seems big enough to be a Truth too. It's been hinted at that Shallan believes she can find out the truth herself, without Mraize revealing it, if only she can face her past. So, do you think it's possible that Lightweavers say as many Truths as it takes? Is there maybe some WoB on it?
  5. So, during WoR Shallan convinces a bunch of criminals to do the right thing. Pattern states that she used the Surge of Transformation. So, does this mean Transformation is more than just Soulcasting? Does the Surge represent more than the effects of Surgebinding? I'm confused.
  6. So I’ve been bouncing this idea around for a while, and finally decided to type it up. So we know that Pattern bonded Shallan when she was younger, to the point that she could summon her shardblade (to kill her mum). After this she regresses somehow, possibly due to her self-forgetting stuff. Another example we know much less about is Tien, Kaladin’s younger brother. We don’t know a lot about what he did in Amaram’s army, but it is implied that he had reached a point in his Ideals that caught the attention of the Skybreakers enough that Nale felt he needed to be eliminated. I personally think he was at the first Ideal, but have little proof to back that up. So: what are the common threads in these two young lives? My theory: not their own lies, but the lies of those around them. We know that (Pattern at least) Cryptics are very curious about humans. Lyrin was hiding the gem theft, and we know that this caused a lot of strife in Hearthstone. Shallan’s mother was involved somehow with the Skybreakers before her death, and Lin was dealing with political issues (or was that just after Shallan’s mum died?) as well as dealing with debts. Also maybe the Ghostbloods. We know that Pattern is interested in the lies of people besides Shallan. Shallan and Tien are both “the light” of their respective households. The Lightweavers have been described as the “spiritual sustainers” of the Radiants. They are both artistic, and very curious about the world around them. If Cryptics are the spren of natural forces and the laws of nature, the interests of the spren and the knight would align in this. A few other parallels I don’t think are relevant: Shallan and Tien each have depressed older brothers. They are both interested in the creatures around them. They like gentle rains. Please point out anything that I’ve missed!
  7. I recently watched the newest spiderman movie so if you haven't seen it stop reading because.... SPOILERS! So mysterio is making those giant monsters. Basically my question is do you think lightweavers could do something like that with a combination of soulcastings and lightweaving.

  9. Okay so I presented this idea to our facebook group and actually got a decent bit of pushback on it so I wanted to see what the Shard thought of it. Also, this thread will likely get pretty Cosmere spoiler-y so if you haven't read much other than Stormlight, you may get spoiled so tread at your own pace (Ironic as I haven't read Mistborn Era 2 yet) So, Wit totally bonded that Cryptic that Elhokar left, right? Okay, so now that we cleared that up: we know Hoid has the ability to just happen to be in the right place at the right time, but I had the inkling suspicion that Hoid was very interested in the abilities of Lightweavers (considering he already has a Yolish form of the magic) and that he might have been helping sort of "groom" proto-Lightweavers for a while now on Roshar so that he could get his hands on the magic system (something he has been doing throughout the Cosmere). So hear me out, Hoid was aware of Shallan's speaking of the Immortal Words/First Ideal when he confronted her during her flashback sequence and even used emotional Allomancy on her during the confrontation. He also served as King's Wit for Elhokar, whom was also a proto-Lightweaver. While Hoid has had a hand in the lives of the other MC Radiants, it seems as though he was more focused on the ones that were on the brink of becoming Lightweavers. I'm thinking that Hoid might have been grooming these Lightweavers so that when one of them eventually got killed (like a super young girl and a son of an assassinated king), he would pick up the spren. The Order is perfect for Hoid, he even says that he has many truths that he can tell the Cryptic. He has made it very clear when he spoke to Dalinar in WoR (I think) that he will watch Roshar burn if that's what it takes to get what he wants. He may not necessarily want that to happen because seems pretty apparent from his letters in each books' Part Two epigraphs that he wants to stop Odium and is begging for help from outside forces. But I also could see Hoid lurking for a Lightweaver to get killed and to try and salvage the spren considering that obtaining Surgebinding is a MUCH more complex task than eating a bead or obtaining someone's Breath. I could very well be wrong with this theory but I think it is neat regardless, but what do all of you think?
  10. K so hopefully nobody else has talked about this, (I'm not about to go looking through all of the posts about Elhokar in OB), because I don't want to look stupid. Anyways, I read the Stormlight Archive for the first time this last summer, and after reading all of Brandon's cosmere works, (+Skyward, Rithmatist, etc.), I decided to re-read Stormlight to better participate on here. While reading today, I found this, said by Elhokar... That description sounds an awful lot like pattern when Shallan first sees him in her drawings...If I'm right it means even before Elhokar starting to speak the oaths in OB, (even before any stuff with Wit or whatever that was I don't remember), we had foreshadowing/evidence in PART 4 of WoK, that Elhokar could become a Lightweaver. I really hope no one else has found this and I'm not waaaaaaaay late.
  11. This isn't a real theory. Rather, sort of a musing that I'd like to hear other thoughts on. [This is in reference to the WoB stating that Tien was on the way to becoming a Lightweaver.] We know that Cryptics are fascinated by lies, perhaps initially drawn to their prospective Radiants by them. Shallan has powerful personal truths to give Pattern. Hoid offers extremely juicy secrets. Elhokar, living in the shadow of two warlords and with a dangerous, corrupted spouse and volatile kingdom, well, it makes sense that he has deep lies and profound truths to admit. So what about Tien? Sweet, kind, joyful Tien. I imagine he was more aware of his family's situation than they maybe gave him credit for. But what sort of lie was he living that would have been strong enough to put him on the (admittedly aborted) path to being a Lightweaver? Just interested in hearing other thoughts and theories, crackpot or otherwise.
  12. Under the description of the Illumination surge, it says it is the surge of "light, sound, and various wave forms." Going by this description, can we conclude that Lightweavers can manipulate microwaves? And therefore are just walking microwaves with the power to heat things up?
  13. Heyo guys! I finally made a 17th shard account! (Finally!!!) Okay, this is really, really random, so be prepared. You guys, do you ever think that maybe Brandon Sanderson was stumped on the stick scene (pun intended)? And so, at 3:00 AM in the morning, with a stroke of pure and amazing genius, he wrote I AM A STICK as a joke and then it became a thing when someone else read it or something? Then somehow it became the most iconic and poetic line in the entire series. You guys we should make a kelek stick poem.
  14. So at the end of oathbringer Shallan makes her illusions solid? She assumes that it is a mix of soulcasting and illumination, but Jasnah said it may be the fact that there is so much stormlight. What if this is the resonance for the lightweavers? Do we know if you can only have one resonance? Or is it just if you put enough stormlight into an illusion you can make it solid?

  16. Ok so I have a theory that Shalash can not live through the Stormlight Archive. The reason for this is that we have a WOB that each book is dedicated to a DIFFERENT order of Radiants. The current flashbacks are set as: Kaladin: Windrunner Shallan: Lightweaver Dalinar: Bondsmith Eshonai: Willshaper Szeth: Skybreaker Lift: Edgedancer Jasnah: Elsecaller Taln: Stoneward Renarin: Truthwatcher Shalash: Lightweaver See the problem there are two Lightweaver books, and no Dustbringer books. When we know that Sanderson said that we are going to have ONE book for each order. So in my opinion Ash dies, Malata takes the Lead for that book, but we still get Shalash’s backstory.
  17. So, this is actually a rather small post, but I feel it is important. Kaladin, as far as we've seen him, seems very honorable, always doing the right thing, and never really breaking the rules. He seems a bit too honorable, and he attracted an Honorspren. WoR spoiler This seems a little too similar to be a coincidence. Are the Nahel-bonding spren attracted to those similar in personality to them? Or, and this is an interesting thought, do they manipulate the person they plan on bonding to and change their personality, their intent? Syl confirms that she was following Kaladin since before he even joined Amaram's army, around the time he volunteered to go with his brother to defend him. Seems honorable. WoR spoiler
