1. Welcome! This topic is intended for new players or people who are thinking about joining the Alleyverse, or possibly just people who are curious as to what the deal is with these cookies. If that sounds like you then prepare yourself for the insanity that is the Alleyverse, if that doesn't sound like you then maybe just keep reading anyway and see if the madness convinces you to join. What is the Alleyverse? The Alleyverse is a Free Form Role Playing Game (FFRPG) played on the forum. It takes place in the Alleyverse, a universe where all of Brandons worlds and magic systems coexist. Hemalurgic monsters exist, as do Elantrians, Mistborn, Chasmfiends, Knights Radiant, Awakeners and a few poor saps trying to rebuild a city that we destroyed. Worldhoppers from all over the cosmere and beyond journey to the Alleyverse to interact with each other and the local guilds (More on them later). Players create characters within this universe and interact with each other in a group Role Play and collaborative story. How do I get started? Well if you have any specific questions feel free to ask them here and one of our moderators will try to answer them for you. But if you want to dive right into the deep end then you can try creating a character profile for yourself in the character creation thread and some of us will give feedback and help to workshop the character so that it can fit within the greater world of the Alleyverse. We also have a chat thread where a bunch of random discussions take place so it's a good idea to introduce yourself there so all the other players can know that you exist and say hi (Most of us don't bite). If you're curious about the world of the Alleyverse and want to learn more about it we have a 'Guide to the Alleyverse' thread here that has some more detailed information about the world, or we also have a wiki! And... That's more or less it. I'll have some frequently asked questions here that will hopefully grow over time, if you have any further questions feel free to ask us below. I hope you enjoy the rabbit hole of chaos and madness that we affectionately call the Alleyverse. FAQ Q. What is the deal with these cookies? A. Well this one is sort of on me, way back in the dark ages there was a poll on the forum for what your favourite magic system was, I replied that my favourite was Hemalurgy (Because it clearly is) and someone jokingly replied that I should be added to a list of 'people to avoid in Dark Alleys'. This was the unofficial birth of the guild known as the DA (Dark Alley). Now at the same point in time I also had a habit of sending people pictures of cookies when I was making theories, to bribe them into agreeing with me. Someone joined these two ideas and suggested that I was secretly putting Hemalurgic spikes into the cookies I was handing out and I played along until it eventually became associated with the DA. So now we occasionally hand out 'cookies' to people in introduction threads as our way of welcoming them to the forums and possibly gaining new test subjects recruits. Q. Someone told me not to eat the cookie. A. Well that's not a question but even so: don't listen to that person. Cookies are amazing and anyone who suggests otherwise is wrong by default. (Though there is a small chance that you'll lose your soul if you eat the cookie, but trust me it's worth it) Q. What are these guilds? A. Well that's a long and complex subject but basically most players and characters in the Alleyverse belong to a guild, these guilds each have different motives, resources and levels of affection for cookies. If you want to hear more about the guilds you could look in the Guilds section in the wiki for more details, or ask in the chat thread if anyone is recruiting. More to come when I'm a little less tired and when we have more questions being asked. *Note: Can our more senior players please avoid posting here unless a new players question has gone unaddressed for a while, in order to keep this simple and short I'd prefer if responses here were limited to new players and AV moderators.
 2. I've read this statement before but the FAQ once again states that Human the Koloss is alive. So, how long do Koloss normally live? I get why the Kandra are immortal; TLR specifically made them that way as a gift for following him. Did TLR just accidentally create another immortal race or are they just long lived (when they don't brutally murder each other)? Or was this Sazed's doing?
 3. Hello my fellow Sharders. Through some depth of insanity whose true cause we shall never know, Chaos has been foolish enough to grant me a grain of authority. Specifically, I have been commissioned to compile a set of FAQ's, format them prettily, and then reap in the accolades for everyone else's hard work. This decision has been made due to the increasingly large amount of "common knowledge" that newer members don't know about, as well as, obviously, to answer frequently asked questions in a centralized manner. As I am averse to actual work or mental activity demanded of my own person, I will be following the diabolical synergistic rout of harvesting crowdsourcing both questions and answers from the community at large. In my experience, this is a much better way to get actually useful results than me just locking myself in a room for a month and generating everything myself. The community asks and answers the questions it cares about quickly, responsively, and thoroughly with this kind of setup, and, most importantly, you don't have to place all your faith in one person (who happens to be me in this case) to keep on top of everything forever. At this point, I could go on a hunt for questions and answers from various threads that already have them, or simply spitball various things I know off the top of my head. But that would both require work from me and deny you, the community, of a valuable opportunity to get used to providing me with your work so that I don't have to do it. So I'll be leaving even the low hanging fruit to you guys. -------- Format: I would kindly request that you write your submissions in the following way: Q: Why is the sky blue? A: Sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time. Source: NASA Canonicity: SCIENCE! So, for facts that we actually care about: Q: Who is Hoid? A: A character who first appeared in an unpublished work who plays a role in all of Brandon's Cosmere books, to some greater or lesser extent, and is capable of moving between Shardworlds. His methods and goals are inscrutable. See the source for greater detail. Source: Hoid article on Coppermind Canonicity: Word of Brandon, in the books Canonicity, so far as I can think, scales such: In the books directly Word of Brandon/Word of Peter Word of Inkthinker (or anyone else with some role in the making of the work) Sanderson-implied -(semi-vague but easily deduceable comment. Like Hoid writing the letter) Highly-regarded theory -(So based on Brandon's comments and/or nearly unimpeachable deductions from the books. Like the Letter thread before Brandon's nigh-confirmation of it.) Anything below this level is highly suspect. We might consider expanding the FAQ later, but we won't include less solid theories for the time being. There might be some room for sub-divisions, or I might have cut it too fine, but you get the idea. Just some kind of qualifier so that we know which one to go with if there is some possibility of conflict between a FAQ and some new fact or theory. You don't have to include canonicity or even a source for me to use a Q&A, but I and everyone around you would vastly prefer it, as it just makes everything easier down the road. Aims: I would like to see this FAQ cover a broad range of questions, from the simple "what's a shard?" to the more complex questions about Intent and Realmatics, with everything in-between for questions about individual series (such as how the 16-rule works in you-know-what-series, Cadmium/Bendalloy being swapped for you-know-what-metals, restrictions on Forging, etc.). Depending on how things go, it could end up being a big mondo-thread with a lot of subdivisions or spread out over various series-centric boards. The key is to get the content, though, and that's what I'm asking you guys for. I'll have posted this in every board, and will watch them all carefully and start collating the results once they reach critical mass. After the initial FAQ is created, I would like it to be updated on a fairly regular basis. As to how much information the FAQ should cover, I don't think anyone wants a second Coppermind. Relatively simple questions, relatively simple answers: just let people who are new or have been out of the loop know what everyone else takes for granted. And so now I leave it to you. Thank you in advance for your helpful (and excellently formatted) submissions. P.S. This organization (meaning me with Chaos behind me wielding a big stick) reserves the right to reject, edit, or rephrase any submission in service of the goal of most clearly conveying useful information to the user-base. Though that would take work, so I'd prefer not to have to do it too often.
 4. Hello my fellow Sharders. Below is a list of frequently asked questions and their answers. Spoiler-wise, there is one post for every major Cosmere series, with each post following the normal spoiler rules (spoiler tags for referencing another series, embargo period for new releases) and the Cosmere section will be essentially a free for all except for the aforementioned embargo period. This post simply serves as an index. Index: -Cosmere -Mistborn -Stormlight -Warbreaker -Sel (Elantris and The Emperor's Soul) We are always looking for contributions, though I would prefer that you post on the individual submission threads (Cosmere, Misborn, Stormlight, Warbreaker, Sel) rather than here, just so that everything can stay neat. For a more comprehensive and in-depth look at all things Brandon, why not head over to the Coppermind wiki? Other resources include: Cosmere 101, Theoryland Database
 5. Hey all, with Words of Radiance fast approaching, I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about the spoiler policy. All Words of Radiance spoilers belong in the Words of Radiance spoiler board. There, you will be able to freely talk about the publicly released sample chapters, and when the book comes out, obviously the book itself. if you must post a Words of Radiance spoiler elsewhere (such as in the Stormlight board or General Brandon Discussion), they must, without exception be marked as such. That said, feel free to request a moderator to move the topic to the Words of Radiance board. To mark spoilers, use this: Words of Radiance spoilers:
(put spoilers here)
If you somehow manage to acquire a copy of Words of Radiance before Tuesday, do not post any information on the book until Tuesday, even in Cosmere Theories or the Words of Radiance board.Posts violating these policies will be removed/edited immediately. One last thing! When the book comes out, please refrain from putting out big book spoilers in the topic titles. The overall spoiler period for Words of Radiance will be around six months. After that point, the Words of Radiance board will be merged with the Stormlight Archive forum, as it can be reasonably expected that people who want to discuss Stormlight Archive in great detail would have read it by then. This seems like a much better solution than having different boards for each Stormlight book, which in my opinion would be overkill.
