  1. Hi guys, hopefully I'm in the right place for this. If there's a better place to ask this, I'd love some redirection advice! I'm a public librarian planning a "Sander-celebration" at our library for next month. We'll be having book discussions, games, etc. I'd like to come up with a couple of fairly simple crafts that we could put out for people to do, but I'm coming up blank. Everything I've thought of so far is too complicated (knit a doomslug like at dragoncon), too messy/long (epoxy resin spheres) or too simple and potentially expensive (vials of metals). I need something that will take a few minutes of effort to complete, fairly inexpensive materials, no special talents, or permanent mess. Is there such a thing? I'm hoping you creative minds can help me think of something!
  2. For those not aware, Brandon as well as his Writing Excuses crew are coming to the World Fantasy Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brandon was announced as a special guest in January, but this morning an update email was sent out by the World Fantasy Convention: I myself registered for attendance in December. Is anyone else planning to attend?
  3. I hope I'm doing this right So Brandon will be the guest of honor at Israeli 2019 ICon in Tel Aviv in October. Here is the relevant schedule: Tuesday, October 15th 18:00: Lecture by Brandon, subjcet unclear Wednesday, October 16th 12:00: Tools for writers - how a story is built 16:00: Book signing 20:00: A panel with Brandon concerning magical metals Thursday, October 17th 10:00: Book signing 14:00: Writing workshop with Brandon (15 places only!) 16:00: Q&A with Brandon The convention will take place at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque at 4, H'Arb'a st, Tel Aviv. Here is a link to ICon's website, it is all in Hebrew though: https://newprogram.icon.org.il/icon2019/ I honestly don't know if this post will be relevant to anyone but I figured I'd put it up here. Regarding WoB collection, I am planning to get there and try to record as much as possible. If there are any guidelines or additional information about recording for the Arcanum etc. it will be very helpful if someone can point it out to me, PM will work I guess...
  4. "That took longer," says the white-haired man, "than I expected. I'm terribly sorry." Welcome, one and all, to the third and fourth rounds of the Sanderson Puzzlehunt! Signups are now open to both new and returning players. For those unfamiliar for what this is, there is a description of it in the spoiler below: However, this is a special event! There will actually be two rounds of puzzles that will be released to teams in this round. The puzzles in the first round will be designed to be easier and generally more approachable so that newer players can whet their teeth. The second round shall only be available and solvable to the teams with the strongest of wills (coughs obliquely in Team 5's direction). There may also be other changes and surprises that I'm not telling you about! But you'll just have to play the game to discover them, won't you? Due to the size of these rounds, team sizes may be larger depending on membership - I will also try to put new players with experienced ones so that they can work alongside people who have been in the puzzle circus before. The Rules: How do I solve puzzles? The last two rounds (for looking at sample puzzles and solutions): (In other, somewhat unrelated news: Puzzle Potluck (a non-Sanderson puzzlehunt run by someone who isn't me) is on June 15 - you may want to organise for your team to join that, depending on your teammates' preferences.) This event looks to be larger than Earth and Scadrial put together. Therefore, while I would put the ballpark on the first round being completed in two to four days, I have no idea when the final round will be finished. I would be very surprised if someone finished in under a week. Maybe someone will prove me wrong. Regardless, the hunt will begin whenever enough people have signed up, the puzzles are prepared, when the phase of the moon is correct, Sagittarius is waxing, Mars is in fifth house, and most importantly when I feel like it. The hunt has begun. Signups are now closed. Leaderboard:
  5. Okay, a really simple forum topic that we can do to pass the time till oathbringer releases, DeathBattle is obviously a cosmere version of the youtube series of the same name. We pick two characters, with no holds-barred, just who would win in a fight to the death. I'll start you off with 3 (If you are arguing about a battle please make sure you qoute JUST the selected fight and NOT the entire message) - The Lord Ruler (After he loses Ascension power, basically just a lersaium fullborn) VS Szeth-Son-Son-Vallano (with a nahel bond to what we assume MAY be nightblood) - Odium (Rayse) Vs Ruin (Ati) - Vin (Pre-Ascencion, No mist-burning) Vs Lift (I do not know much about Lift as i haven't read "Edgedancer" yet but i know about her magic) -- Please note that all battles will take place on a perfect replica of yolen, same size, gravity, and other cosmere standards. take the gravity differences into account, as roshar has relatively light gravity, and scadrial has quite heavy gravity, meaning Scadrians will be faster and stronger, while Rosharans will be weaker and slower (not by much however, it isn't a HUGE gravity change) UPDATE: the third three battles have been resolved! The Winners Are: - It's a tie! neither one has the full capabilities to kill the other! - The Girls win this one! Jasnah has a close-ranged insta-kill in the form of soulcasting and vin can 1v1 any of the two! - Spook Easily Beat Adolin! It's pretty clear a shardset is no match for a mistborn TOURNAMENT EVENT! PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! IT HAS BEGUN: here are the contestants! Tournament Entry’s: The Format Goes like: Contestand - Person who submitted it (Coach) - Native planet Marsh - Winter Devotion - Scadrial Vasher - Zodiac - Nalthis Arclo - Cloudjumper - Roshar Raoden - Asterion137 - Elantris Vin - Taliax - Scadrial Kelsier - Toaster Retribution - Scadrial Jasnah - Agent34 - Roshar Kaladin - Idealistic - Scadrial Elend - Nohadon - Scadrial Denth - Nathrangking -Nalthis BRACKETS: (These were completely randomized, i used a random number generator numbering the characters 1-10) Kaladin Vs Arclo Vasher Vs Raoden Marsh Vs Jasnah Vin Vs Denth Kelsier Vs Elend GOOD LUCK TO ALL, THE WINNER GETS TO FIGHT A NON-COSMERE THREAT (And the coach get's bragging rights)
  6. EDIT #1: Event is over, you can find my write-up and recordings in this post. EDIT #2: Here's a [link] to the transcript. In case you've missed the news, Brandon will be in the Oak Brook Barnes & Noble on October 12. For quick reference, here's the snippet from his website: The important bit is that the event will have two parts (as is usual for Brandon's signings), each one with different admission rules. The first part (which will likely consist of a story, a Q&A, and a reading) is free and open to anyone and everyone, while the second part (the signing & personalization) requires a purchase of Shadows of Self on the spot. Which, I believe, is more than a little annoying, but their store, their rules (also, guess who is never preordering from B&N ever again). Come back to the Old Orchard Barnes & Noble, Brandon, they are nicer there! They are 10 minutes away from my house, not hour and a half... Anyway, I'll be there. I'll probably show up a little earlier (around 6, if I can), bother the personnel, and try to ambush Brandon if he makes the mistake of showing up early. For the event itself, I try to ask a non-spoilery Cosmere question during the general Q&A (you have me to thank for extracting the knowledge that unicorns do not exist in the Cosmere, thankyouverymuch), 2-3 juicy questions when it's my turn for signing & personalization, and a dozen or two after the event, if Brandon has time for 10 minutes of lightning Q&A. All of the events I've been to, he's been able to stay for a bit after and suffer my pestering, but there are no guarantees. So in this context, I'll be thinking about interesting questions in the next few days (feel free to post yours - obviously I can't promise I'll ask them for you, but if I like something I'll try to put it on my list). I'll also try to post a final list before the event, as well as an audio recording after. Kurk EDIT: Text of transcript as of 12/2016 for word-searching:
  7. So I'm up in Utah for the next few days, and am going to be headed to the LDStorymakers Conference on the 11th, 12th, and 13th. I started this thread to see if I could find other people who were going to be attending as well. It is an event that you have to pay for in advance, you can't just show up. But I was curious about other possible aspiring writers that I might bump into there, more as a casual thing. So if you're attending (or want to know more information) reply and say what you're looking forward to the most. The Official Website: http://ldstorymakersconference.com/
  8. So there are probably lots of people who frequently go to meeting with Brandon. Could those people share how these things usually look like? Any advice, tips? How come there's always some recording? Brandon's coming to Poland in March for the first time and I have zero idea what to expect. This isn't a Con, it probably will be an event hosted by the publisher company.
  9. Anyone in or around Atlanta, Brandon will be heading to a con near you this weekend. The information is up on his website now. I highly recommend attending if you are a fan of Brandon and fantasy as a whole. I won't be able to attend, but I was able to go to a con Brandon was at earlier this year and it was a great experience. I highly recommend the "Hour with Brandon Sanderson" event for anyone looking to get some questions answered.
  10. Hello, Midwestern fans of Brandon Sanderson! Will anyone else be attending Minicon in the Minneapolis, MN area on Easter weekend? Hope to see some of you there! Edited: Fixed a typo.
  11. Should Brandon re-schedule the Philly signing that should have been tonight but was cancelled due to a little bit of snow.... I know Vin would have made it even if she had to use a few Horseshoes...
  12. On 19th April a few UK-ers met up for drinks in London, and lo, 'twas awesome. On twitter, Peter mentioned that Brandon will be doing a signing in the UK sometime in July/August (NOT at LonCon, 'though Harriet will be there) so that's 2 potential meet up dates: 1) The Signing (details to follow when we know when it'll be, I'm thinking pre/post meetup and drinks); and 2) LonCon 14-18 August 2014, ExCel London - if people are going LonCon let us know the dates you will be there and we can maybe meet up for a Sanderfan toast/drinks. Let me know if you're interested in coming along, had a great time at the weekend and would be awesome to meet up and have very involved cosmere convos again
  13. Brandon has been blogging/tweeting about this for a bit now, but for those who haven't noticed: Brandon offered a stretch goal for a Worldbuilders' charity drive, the reward being that he would live-stream himself writing a story while collaborating with/taking the suggestions of viewers. This is happening this Friday (Jan. 17) from 2-7 PM Mountain time (-7 UTC). I'm very bad at judging the appropriateness of these things, but would it be overreaching for us to ask Cosmere questions in the "extended Q&A"? Either way, I thought people might appreciate a place to discuss this. Maybe us Sharders could pre-brainstorm some ideas/suggestions to give to Brandon?
