This is a concept that mulled around in my head for a bit, but then I finally got some free time to put it together. It'll be a series of Wayne-and-Steris vignettes. Enjoy. Frigid, Part I: Masque Wayne swung open the old oak doors and stepped into Wax's study. Lingering for a moment in the doorway, the scent of dust, metal shavings, book-cover leather, and single-malt whiskey made its way to his usually unhelpful nose. He inhaled and savored in the familiar aroma, closing his eyes and smiling to himself. It was a smell of friendship, kinship, and the shared bond of people who had gone through everything together. And of Wax's odd habits. He opened his eyes and stepped into the room. The usual surroundings unfolded in the lantern light. Wax had said something about not wanting to install electrics, the reason for which had shifted from "They're so unreliable" to "Maybe some other time" to "After the wedding" to "There's no point, they're already installed in the tower." Wayne did a circuit around the room to turn off the lights, walking from the bookshelf to the liquor cabinet. He turned to the desk, and saw in the faint light a figure in a mask, an apron, and some very threatening leather gloves, holding a test tube in some clamps over a small burner plate. Wayne cursed softly and reached for his duelling canes, but then paused and blinked at the figure. It didn't seem to notice him. Shuffling towards the figure, He began to fill his goldminds. He coughed softly. The figure did not respond. "Ruination," he said aloud. The figure looked up and tilted its head. "Wayne?" A familiar, if muffled voice came from behind the mask. Wayne thought he knew the voice faintly, and then it struck him. "'Ello, Crazy." "Hello, Idiot." "Loving the new look. I've heard the 'husband's welding mask' thing is all the rage in Bilming. Or did you and Allik go down the prom on a day out?" "I don't have time for your... usual nonsense today, Wayne. As you can see, Lord Waxillium has tasked me with-" Wayne stopped listening. He didn't even have to do the usual responses of "mhm" and "yup", or even nod, as she wouldn't notice anyhow. He glanced towards the burner plate. How, he wondered, is she not melting? He chided himself. Even though she was who she was, Wax loved her. And, being the best friend that git Wax ever had, Wayne figured he should respect his choices. No matter how... frigid. He began wandering around the room. He was in the middle of fairly swapping a few pens from the cabinet for a string of pink ribbon and some crackers from his pocket when a thunderous cracking noise came from across the room. Wayne threw a speed bubble up, reflexively flaring his bendalloy. After looking around and seeing no gun-toting bandits or insufferable brown-suited shapeshifters, he dropped the bubble. He always got a bit jumpy when storing health. "Preservation's Wings, woman!" "What?!" A soft but frantic voice piped up. "Wayne, what is it?!" "What is it? You just scared me 'alf to death with your gunshot allergies!" "Oh, dear. It must be the dust in this mask. I'm sorry for startling you." Wayne recoiled. Sorry? "It's, ah... it's fine. I'm 'boutta run down to the kitchens, see what I can nab, er, find." He paused, then spoke again. "You, uh, want anything?" "I could do with a baywrap, if there are any left over from tea. Thank you, Wayne." He managed a soft "Yeah," then slowly walked out of the room and down the stairs. Thank you? This was new for Steris. Probably the wedding, he thought, putting her in a better mood for a while. She'd be back to normal in... a few days, at most. As he was making his way down the stairs, Wayne realized: Steris hadn't even told him, in that pedantic and killjoy voice, not to steal anything. And for once, he didn't feel like it, anyhow
Aftermath: The Remnants of Elysium "NO!" screamed Raven, spontaneously reforming. Everyone looked shocked, as she had just been sliced to bits a few seconds ago. "I guess there's a few tricks the aliens don't know about" explained Raven. "I teleported a few seconds into the future to avoid the mind blades. Felt pretty weird, but I'm here now. Speaking of mind blades..." Cluny's body became littered with mind blades, until he too reformed. "Nice try" he taunted, then quickly teleported out of the room. "Ugh. We should have known better." Raven complained. "Seriously, a half rat, half human? Of course that would be a bloody alien. I think that's the last of them, so we can all get out of here." The town wasn't listening, as several members were rapidly closing in on Wally. "Guys? I found the last alien, you can stop now." They weren't listening. Their whole perception had warped irreversibly. "Guys?" A flurry of mind blades lashed out, decapitating Nathaniel and Sam. Wally laughed maniacally, before Douglas stabbed him in the heart. Something in Ecth snapped, and she drew her own weapon, a pistol concealed beneath her skirt. Douglas grabbed Jack, intending to use him as a human shield, but Ecth was past the point of caring. she shot once, twice, three times into both of them before pulling the pistol on herself, and committing suicide. Douglas, bleeding out, stabbed Jack for good measure. They both collapsed in heap, dead. Raven stared in shock, as Cluny teleported back into the room. "What did you do?" she screamed. "Nothing." replied the rat, coldly. "I merely facilitated an environment where humans could fight it out. I believe they have a power called Firebranding. Maybe you've heard of it?" Raven continued to stare. "Regardless, it is a power that can alter one's perception of each other. Harnessed properly, it could win the war between my species. This was merely a proof of concept. I would say it is a huge success." He examined the room, smiling at his grisly work. "I won't let you get away with this!" screamed Raven, launching a Cytonic assault. Cluny deflected it effortlessly. "I wouldn't do that if I were you. I could easily overpower you, should I so choose." "Then what the hell are you going to do to me?" asked Raven. "Nothing." replied Cluny. "I've already gotten what I came for. Even if I were to get access to the missile codes, I have no doubt my species could easily shred them out of the sky in seconds. Congrats, by the way." "What." leveled Raven darkly. "Congratulations! You won. You stopped the evil aliens from taking over the missiles. You even managed to find the last one all on your own. So, congratulations. The humans have won. And with that, I bid you adieu." He teleported out of the room, leaving Raven to stare at the grisly remains. It would be a long time before she would be able to recover. The humans have won! Kind of. Brightness Radiant actually survived. Cluny was killed. He was an Alien Cyto Adept Sorry for the weird notice. I didn't notice Brightness changing her action to protect against Cluny, which would have resulted in the last alien dying. Anyway, that's the game. Links to the docs, as well as my thoughts coming soon. Player List:
So, I was just perusing this: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1110 And on question three, it asks if Szeth was brought back with Rosharan or Nalthian Investiture, and Brandon RAFO'd it, which to me raises the question: Is Szeth a Returned? I know Endowment didn't Return him, but perhaps the "fabrial" Nale used to revive him had something to do with Nalthian Investiture, perhaps making him essentially a Returned. What do y'all think?
On a whim I decided to do a quick Google News search for "Mistborn." - I found a couple reviews and this little gem on a French news site. http://www.elbakin.net/fantasy/news/22011-Brandon-Sanderson-reparle-du-film-Fils-des-Brumes "During a series of questions / answers, the American author has returned to the film adaptation of Mistborn, or Son-of-Mists French. Sanderson reveals that one of his conditions for this film is a cast opening to the public, so anyone can apply for a role. He also explained that it is the "film" section of the company Little Orbit, who produced the Mistborn video game: Birtright, which currently holds the rights to adapt. They keep the game if they finish within 18 months, otherwise these rights will be relisted. Of course, we are still far from even just an estimate release date for this film ..." I ran it through Google Translate, so it's not perfect. Apparently Mistborn: Birthright is coming within about 17 months, or it's not coming at all. I like that casting is open to the public, but I'd prefer having more talented actors performing the principal roles rather than someone off the streets. Any other thoughts from anyone? Was this knowledge previously known and I just missed it?
