  1. As of right now, we know of 15 of the 16 Shards. I have a theory about the last Shard's Intent. We know from WOB that there's a shard that "just wants to survive." There are also WOBs that could contradict my theory for sure. "Survive" sounds like it could be an Intent but we know that it's not. Shardic intents seem to sometimes go to extremes of their areas: "odium" could be considered extreme hatred, "ruin" could be extreme decay/destruction, etc. So what if "survive" is the less-extreme version of this shard? The Shard I propose is Ferocity. When I think of something that just wants to survive, I think of a cornered animal. A cornered animal is ferocious, but not malicious. They'll do anything they possibly can to survive, maybe even escape. But there's no malicious intent. Just a need to survive. An aluminum-foil hat for sure, but what do people think?
  2. Are the shards numbered? If so is their numbering significant? 16 is important in Mistborn for instance, especially to Ruin. As the end of all things it would make sense for Ruin to be the final shard. The Omega shard if you will. The number 10 seems important to Honor, and Odium disagrees and says only 9 of honors 10 are true.
  3. Okay so this theory is going to be half formed and probably not great but a lightbulb went off in my head while re-reading Mistborn. Burning atium grants future sight, to a degree, feruchemists can store youthfulness, and and an atium spike can steal any ability. It makes sense that in Ruin's own magic system it could steal any ability, making it the most powerful metal out of his system because it decays the source of the power, but the other two are temporal in nature. We also know that Cultivation and Endowment are very skilled in future sight while other shards struggle with this. What I'm thinking is that Shards from the change quadrant of the Dawnshard chart will have more powerful temporal abilities, this being due to the fact that the nature of their power is to change things and so they can read the effects of changes much more easily. I am pretty steadily convinced that invention will also be one of the Change Shards so in theory that takes care of all four from that quadrant. If I'm right about this, the other three quadrants relating to the nature of the shards abilities would grant four Shards a specific strength in their given attribute rather than simply having power related to that attribute. We know from a word-of-Brandon that one of the Dawnshards is unique while the other three have a much closer relation so I'm asking in this post if anyone has ideas for what the other Dawnshards might be based on the powers granted by certain shards. I know this is kind of a long shot because Odium is also particularly skilled in future sight and Preservation showed at least proficiency in this area as well, but I feel at this point any information we can base theories on is worth looking at for the sake of hopefully predicting a Dawnshard or two before the next Stormlight book comes out 3 years from now
  4. We seem to have some numerical trends seen across the cosmere, is there a reason for this, and how will this be incorporated in the future?
  5. During my recent reading of all the Mistborn books, I noticed (first in Era 1) the number sixteen show up multiple times, both in The Hero of Ages and the other installments. I kind of forgot about it until I read Shadows of Self, where I noticed the carriage that Wax had been trying to find was number '16'. There were probably others as well, though I didn't catch any more. What is the significance of the number '16', and did I miss any other mentions of it in the books (the sixteen Shards perhaps)?
  6. I know 16 has massive importance on Scadrial but does it have any relevance anywhere else.
  7. I pulled this from another topic that spiraled out of hand, and I wanted to discuss it separately with out all the other stuff getting involved. Shards and the significance of their numbers: I want to explore the importance of these numbers. Scadrial has 3 magic systems, 2 take on 16 known forms and one takes on 32 known forms. Allomancy, Feruchemy, and the seemingly most numerous Hemalurgy. But if you look closer and as is stated in the books Hemalurgy "Steals" the form of investiture from the target, and can grant a reduced, in some manner, form of that investiture to a target. So Hemalurgy really only has one form. The form of stealing a power at a loss. While Allomancy has 16 forms, one for each metal, and the same for Feruchemy. Feruchemy is the "Corrupted" form of investiture caused by the powers of two shards mixing. If you mix 16 and 1 in a multiplicative/divisive fashion you will get 16. It neatly makes sense. The point that Hemalurgy doesn't have a set count on power has been discussed with Brandon and Brandon has given examples and confirmed theories that it can steal more than just investiture, and can steal pretty much any form of investiture so long as it is at a loss. All of this reinforces the belief that Ruin's Shard number is 1. Also if the 16 numbers were written in a circle they would be neighbors, just as 12 and 1 are neighbors on a clock face. There are other shards that have significant number some have been outright stated in the books, other have only been implied. Lets start with the stated number significant to other Shards, namely Honor and Odium at 10 and 9 respectively. 10 gemstones, 10 surges, 10 Orders, etc ad nauseam. Honor's number is 10. Odium's number is 9. 9 void bindings, 9 currency gemstones, I am sure we will find more and more concrete examples of 9 being tied to Odium until Brandon finally comes out and says it. Cultivation seems to be 11, there is very little information on this currently but it is becoming clear that Cultivation is a neighbor to Honor. There is an 11th Gemstone on the planet, people swear by Damnation's 11th name. If Cultivation is 11 then that means 2 of the systems that have more than one shard the shards also have neighboring numbers. It Is implied that Autonomy's number is 8 due to the 8 professions and 8 tiers of sandmastery. Brandon has stated that there is a sort of alliance between Odium and Autonomy. They are also numerical neighbors. My theory is that Dominion and Devotion will also be neighbors, but her have no clue currently what their numbers are, If anyone has seen a numerical development on Sel (other than 3 for the 3 Major Kingdoms) please share. Endowment seems to have 5 as its Shard number 5 visions, 5 scholars. Also the trend has been established in the books that powers and roots are a theme (100 desolations on Roshar, 4 groups of 4 metals on Scadrial) and Endowment seems to have a full pantheon of 25 Gods which would be 5X5. Shards we know about but don't have a clue about their numbers are: Dominion, Devotion, Ambition.
  8. So here's the thing, I've been listening to the Graphic audio versions of the original mistborn books (They're great by the way, voices are spot on) and something that always interested me before was when Demoux brought up the peculiarity of 16. This has caught me out for two reasons. 1) We know that Demoux is a world hopper. His presence on Roshar is evidence enough, however when did he become a world hopper? Was he aware of his power before the events of Hero of Age's? If so that would explain, at least a bit, why he would focus on the number 16 when he was talking with Elend. Maybe he had knowledge prior to the events about what else was 16 (The number of shards) and may have been trying to drop some form of a hint. Thats my interpretation. 2) This got me wondering if there has been any other mention of sixteen outside of Scadrial, either in sub text or blatant in any other books. Perhaps each world has their significant numbers for instance, they're are ten heralds on roshar, ten silver kingdoms. I'll open this up to others. Who else has found significant numbers that keep cropping back up? Is there some significance to the numbers? I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is some sort of code, that seems to be going to far, but there maybe something to it. And like our good friend Kelsier always says "There's always another secret"
  9. This may have already been proposed, but I just suddenly thought of a potential Cosmere tie in to an interest of mine. As such, I thought I'd inform you guys here on the Shard. Basically, I'm proposing that the Golden ratio was used as somewhat of a base for the cosmere. For those of you who don't know, Phi is a letter of the Greek Alphabet that in modern times is used to represent the golden ratio. The golden ratio is a number that inexplicably appears in nature on a variety of scales, from the patterns in which flower petals grow to the literal shaping of galaxies. It also pertains to the Fibonacci sequence (a series of numbers in which each new number is equal to the sum of the 2 previous numbers) because the ratio of a given point on the sequence divided by the point directly before it grows ever closer to the golden ratio as the points increase. This number, expressed as a decimal, is approximately 1.618. Obviously, this number x10 is roughly equal to 16, a number with drastic influence on the cosmere. 10 is relatively important as well (the 10 orders, etc.). It would also be important to scale the ratio upwards from a plot perspective, because Adonalsium couldn't have exactly split into 1.6 shards. It would be very interesting to see how the golden ratio pertains to a variety of in-world phenomena, such as the shape of Roshar, orbital patterns of planets, the formation of the Starbelt, any number of Shallan's sketches, the sand plates that form patterns, and possibly even the Shattering itself. I'm currently on vacation, but once I get home I'll do some research into applying this info to some of the topics listed above
  10. I am starting this topic to see how often Brandon secretly puts the number 16 into his books. An example is in Way of Kings and 2+6+5+3=16. Another example is in Alloy of Law, Wax found some numbers that added to 16 (can't remember what they were and don't have a copy to look it up). So if anyone else finds some hidden like these post them here.
  11. I was thinking about this last night and knowing that 16 is a big arc number when it comes to the Cosmere and BS, I got to thinking about whether the alloys count towards that number. My reasoning is that it does not; because Shards influence the world and that because alloys are man made things, we have only seen 8 of 16 metals used on Scadrial for the Metallic Arts. Of course if BS has said otherwise I'm totally willing to give up this notion of mine
