  1. speak again the ancient oaths i will create instead of scrap. i will save everything for later. i will write for those who cant write for themselves. I accept that there will be things I cannot include. i will dream world beyond our own. the writers radiant shall rise again. this is meant to serve 2 purposes. 1 to help provide worldbuilding help to all the authors out there. 2 gives us a place to talk about worldbuilding a bit like the Frustrated Writer Support Group. and 3 just a bit of fun.
  2. So basically I've been doing a lot of worldbuilding, and I wanted to share it. My word doesn't have a name yet because I feel like the name needs to be really good. For now this is just sort of an introduction. I'm going to add more, but I wanted to get this done first. If anything doesn't make sense, if anyone has questions, or if anyone has advice oof constructive criticism, please feel free to share. Also if anyone has an idea for a name, that would be great. Origin : Map (Not a good one just a sketch) : Introduction to the islands : Larasan: The Sabre (This one is bold and I have no idea why, maybe because I copied it from a Google doc? I can't make it go away though.) The Inker Island, the Takan Belt, and Alack'homai Aurum and Argentum :
  3. Hello hello! So I'm relatively new to worlbuilding and learning how to find ideas among the everyday. I just wanted to ask, how do you guys narrow down your ideas to successfully worldbuild? I've been doing brainstorming sessions, but I end up with so many ideas and possibilities that I feel more overwhelmed than I did before I started. I don't know how to pick which way to go; there are so many things to make decisions on, I just feel I'm going to make a mess of things down the line
  4. This is my worldbuilding project thread where I ask questions. Here's a link for my doc. (It's a bit minimal as of yet). Geyate Alright amigos, I have an issue. I'm creating a world where there are third eyes that can be gained with life-changing experiences. For example, if someone had an experience where they were nearly killed by some fantasy creatures and was absolutely terrified by it, there is a chance they gain the third eye. Though they don't gain the eye until a second event happens later. Most of these things have to happen when they are children (around the age of 8 because they understood what happened, but are young enough for it to be life-scarring.) The particular kett (what the people are called who gain the powers) for that example would be evil/horror. There are 7 well known kett and one that is unique. I was trying to figure out what way to change the world to try and connect the world to the magic. Problems Numero Uno. - Probably solved Numero Dos - Not solved I need to find an energy source for my planet. Not sure if I should do electricity to make easier or what.
  5. Greetings denizens! Our old guide to the Alleyverse thread has fallen a little out of date so I'm adding this to give some additional information on the various districts and locations that have been established around the city. We do have a collaborative Google Doc which is where this is sourced from and will probably be kept a little more up to date, PM myself or one of our other lovely mods if you'd like a link. We also have a thread on our Discord for people to discuss worldbuilding so if you'd like to help build the details of the city or the wider Alleyverse pop by there. This is a work in progress but hopefully people can use some details from here to help flesh out both their scenes and their backstories. 6. The link for a world I'm making. Just want some opinions and I'm bored. So. Ya. Feel free to take a look and comment on the doc with any input you have. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RceI4DBOh3ewql8mrempae4_wWeR1dy0VedW4GXO44I/edit?usp=sharing
  7. Hello! And welcome to my flailings as a novice writer, I'm trying to create an original world to place into the Cosmere as a side-story to a fanfiction I'm making. I would greatly appreciate some aid in the endeavor. I'm not entirely sure about the title just yet but it will be part of my 'Cosmeric Tales' fanfic series that I will one day post on Spacebattles, because that's where I've posted stories before and I hope to attract some attention to the Cosmere with a few decent stories. Anyway so this side-story will be taking place on a world called Vathen, it's a world designed by Adonalsium much like Roshar, but was never touched by a Shard until very recently. A conflict between 2 Shards that led to one of them pulling a Preservation and tearing a large chunk of Investiture from the other and hiding it away, on a world that hardly anyone has ever paid attention to. The Shard that visited this world also left behind a powerful Splinter, akin to the Godspren like the Stormfather, to watch over the Chunk hidden away. While the Splinter's creator left to go back to their original world. This happened decades before the story starts, with the Chunk starting to corrupt the local Magic System and cause problems. But anyway I'd like some assistance in actually making some worldbuilding, I have some ideas of my own. I want the Magic System to be based around plants. I want the Destiny number of Vathen to be 7 (like Scadrial's 16). I want the world to be covered in Flora, with giant trees and humongous bugs being the main environmental features that make this world unique. I want the end of the story to have a new and stable Perpendicularity form, connecting Vathen to the greater Cosmere. I want some societies to live high in tree-cities and I want some to live below around 'Giant Bug repelling Mushrooms'. There will be humans, maybe a new sentient species like the Singers but who knows. I want a human society to be near-modern so I can make an 'Urban Fantasy' kind of story though I'm no longer as certain. Maybe a sequel will have the main characters dealing with one of Autonomy's Avatars? And this all will take place between the end of the Original Mistborn Trilogy and the beginning of the Stormlight Archives. And If you're wondering about the Shards I'd mentioned earlier, it will spoil things from the main story I'm working on so I'll put it in a spoiler. So yeah that's all I've got so far, with about half of that made up as I was writing this. Huh, I guess worldbuilding's easier than I thought. Any thoughts? Edit; Okay, I'm gonna try to sort these ideas out into boxes for simplicities sake. I'll add more as I think of it. Vathen's Ecology Vathen's Magic Vathen's Societies The actual story
  8. If you like worldbuilding, check this out! It's the doc I'm writing which describes the world of Talanthir and is currently a work in progress. Feel free to read any of it and provide any critique or praise at all, I'm hoping to get as much worthy information in it as possible. I recommend reading the Itiri Kingdoms, Earanti, Laves, or Tesmiah sections if you want to see the parts with the most information. The parts with the fewest headings have the least information. If you have any suggestions for worldbuilding (things to change, add, etc), feel free to tell me those as well. Talanthirian Worldbuilding by Area
  9. I want it to be a hard system with rules (oh no scary), but it's proving to be pretty hard. The current system is semi-rare magic flowers. Break the petals (or any burst of kinetic energy) releases their respective element. A fire petal would make a plume of flame, air would enhance other flowers, water is literally just water, etc. I got how it would affect society and industrialization. Problem is I'm kinda iffy on using the stereotypical elemental system, and how to make it a little less boring. Any advice?
  10. I've seen a lot of magic systems over the years which rely on direct inheritability, with strong magic users being prone to producing children with strong magic, and weak magic users passing only weak magic on to their children, if any. The most common logical end result I see of this, at least in societies that value magical power, is magic slowly becoming concentrated into exlusive bloodlines as strong mages try to have children with other strong mages. That got me thinking about the potential opposite; a system where magic is hereditary (so you still need to be descended from someone with magic to use it), but your own magical power tends to 'wash out' that of your children. A strong mage will always have children with weak magic, the combined power of two sufficiently strong mages might snuff out the spark of magic in their descendants entirely, and two people with nigh-nonexistent magic might have a child with unrivaled power. What do you think the social effects of such a system would be like, where mages are actively disincentivized from having children with other mages (particularly powerful ones) if they want them to be powerful? Edit: For the sake of streamlining things, let's also say that a mage + a pure non-mage would produce mage children with about half the strength of the mage parent. That way 1) the setting presents a reliable way to produce extremes of magic by 'breeding low' over several generations and then 'breeding high,' and 2) you don't just have powerful mages having children exclusively with non-mages to get around destructive interference.
  11. Hey folks, I've stumbled upon a new method for worldbuilding that has helped bypass the blocks in my mind and increase my overall output, so I thought I'd share it to see if others wanted to try it out. For context, I have always struggled with worldbuilding. I get bored and distracted too quickly, so I don't like sitting down and working out accurate timelines, historical events, lineages and things like that. I am far stronger with my character work and find it far easier to present information through the eyes of a character. Enter epistolary worldbuilding. I've found that I work far faster and have more fun by detailing such things in small fragments of text written in-world by various characters. These are usually only a sentence or two long, and I typically don't attribute them to anyone specific or assign a date to them. They're just fun little snippets of character voice witnessing or reflecting on events I'm imagining in my head but am struggling to detail accurately. Part of the fun for me is headhopping through a bunch of different viewpoints and trying to convey a strong sense of character and setting in just a few lines. On their own, each fragment doesn't mean a lot, but when you read a couple at a time you get a larger sense of what is going on in the world that I think feels much more human and character-driven than a dry description of events and dates. Obviously this leaves a deficit of any objective information, as each viewpoint is biased, but I think this is a more accurate representation of history within a world. It can even just help for the original genesis of a sequence of events and then it is simple enough to add dates and create objectivity as needed. But personally it has been a while since I've been worried about objective truths within my writing. So far I've only really used this for worldbuilding history, but I can highly recommend it to others that are more comfortable writing character than doing worldbuilding. I don't think such a process would work to figure out the metaphysics or magic system of a world, but I'm curious to see if it is effective in other contexts. Give it a try. Let me know what you think. We can share examples in this thread.
  12. Hey everyone, Null here with a new roleplay. This comes from a series I wrote with my friend. The series will probably never be published in its current form, but I couldn't let all our worldbuilding go to waste! I've attached a doc that's a summary of all the worldbuilding we did, or I have a TL;DR of the summary in the spoiler below. Because this world is big, complex, and has a bunch of secrets, I'm going to play a bit more like a DM than some of the other RPs on this site. I don't really have a plan for where we're going though, so please come in and explore Siren! Characters First scene:Jay Argentae is in Halcyon Stadium, wandering around the many shops and vendors. He was told to meet someone here by a mysterious note. Worldbuilding for the Siren RP.pdf
  13. The title explains it all. I'll set up a doc to add thoughts to and maybe a discord thing. I have some ideas but it will mostly just be everyone working together. 14. This is a magic system which is being made by me for my world. Ugh, this is a long one so bear with me The Ink : Ink is a black (mostly) slimy substance which is extracted from the body of Pages, A race consisting of creatures who come in various shapes, sizes, and have different anatomies either based on or not based on their environment. Ink is used in many parts of the society by various organizations, hospitals, Industries, and military. Ink is a major mutagenic substance and is known to mutate and cause drastic changes in ecosystems and environments if left uncontrolled. For example, If a herd of Pages are slaughtered in a forest and their dead bodies have been left to be buried in the soil there, (which mostly doesn’t happen as Ink is a valuable substance and will be extracted) it might get deep into the soil, affect the roots of the trees and shape the entire forest into Ink-based nightmares. Every living organism produces particles called the ‘Essence’ which also help in using Ink and to be mutated by it. When an organism (which is not human) has no control over it’s Essence which is exposed to Ink, it leads to mutation. For example, the Ink may react with a tree’s life ‘Essence’ and turn it into a freakish nightmare which is unable to move from it’s fixed place. However, if trained and mastered, they can be used to control their own body functions slightly, and slightly increase their physical capabilities to the point where it’s barely noticeable yet more efficient than nothing. Humans and Pages are said to be few of the only species capable of using and harnessing their Essence flexibly and in different ways when exposed to Ink (Pages have Ink inside them so they have to meet certain conditions to use it and their Essence is different) and the Essence can’t be used for anything other than living and the life processes except when exposed to Ink. This mutative behaviour happens in many other species as well, and not only trees and flora. The Industrial wastes of Ink which might be released into rivers/wastelands drastically change the environment and organisms exposed to it mutate too. Now, the same applies to humans as well, they use Ink which is not cleaned for personal and industrial purposes and the more they use, the more they degenerate into mindless monsters called “The Plagued” which makes them more Page-like. This results in tattoos and patterns all over the body and can also change the anatomy if used too much, making them into nightmares to be feared. So in order for humans to use Ink without being affected, there are many black markets where a specific type of Ink can be available which is cleaned. Inks which are semi-cleaned have slower and less-fatal effects. These types of Inks are mostly hard to acquire and are costly. Sometimes if not checked before purchase, local dealers can also sell Inks which are too dirty and can lead to common corruption and make the profit one sided. Not much known to many humans, Ink has mutated several species of insects capable of parasitising humans and let them use Ink without the drawbacks of turning into nightmares to be destroyed. They ‘eat’ the waste/dirty parts of Ink which is about to be used and leave the Essence of the Ink (which is the pure part mixed with the user’s force) to be used. These insects mostly parasitise young or middle aged people since they are the ones most likely to be exposed and using Ink in this society. These types of people who can use their Ink without being mutated in the slightest are called “Pure Ink users” or just “Inkcasters' ' for short. People who use Ink at a high level alone are called Inkcasters without needing to meet any conditions. “Old men in Ink fields where people die young are to be feared.” ~One of the famous philosophers of the era The rich can use purified ink whenever they want and survive life/death situations due to paying for high quality Ink surgery and armors/weapons imbued with Ink whereas the poorest parts of the society have to resort to being treated in ‘Ink asylums’ and special zones where they are kept due to turning into the Plagued. And if considered too dangerous, some can be executed as well. The parasite is semi-attached into the skin so it can eat Ink wastes both inside and outside of the body if used and isn’t large enough to be a nuisance during physical interaction. Most people don’t know about the parasites and according to them, some people can use Ink and mutate, while others don’t due to some kind of genetic variation. There are some types of Ink which shouldn’t be used in some ways. Parasites can also influence the person’s thoughts/emotions at times which are unnecessary as well. The quality and type of Ink varies from one Page to another and some Ink varieties are useful in some industries whereas some are useful in medical fields etc. And the type of Ink can also determine the type of effect/mutation it has on the victim or ecosystem. The Research and Discovery Council (RDC) has classified the known Ink varieties as : Red Ink : A type of Ink which is mostly used in medical fields and helps in attaching tissues and cells back together, repairing them and if pure enough; make them even sturdier and long lasting than the last time. Though it is not exactly red, but a peach colour, it has been called Red Ink since it had been found. However, if non-purified versions are used, this may result in changing of the body’s behaviour and might endanger the surgeons as well. There are separate ‘Ink Farms’ where harmless pages which have no intelligence are grown and taken care of for the sole purpose of harvesting Ink alone. Red Ink farms are few of the popular farms since injuries and accidents among the middle-class and the rich seem to be common in this era and this can be used to help them. Even helping the military plays a big role in the increase of Red Ink farms. Black Ink : Mostly used in industries and by skilled Inkcasters who use it for battle. This is said to be the most ‘freely’ usable Ink without restricting them to one or two uses and their refined version can be used and manipulated in 4 categories in which the Inkcasters are primarily categorised. I’ll touch on them soon enough. This Ink is black and slimy, while allowing it to be easily flexible for a variety of purposes with and even without Inkcasters. There are some low-level machines which have been developed to imbue them or make objects out of Ink. Though they need human intervention. It is also used as an addictive drug which an individual takes in order to heighten their sense of being in a dreaming state and allowing them to escape reality. This type of Ink is the most common in mutating the ecosystems as well. Blue Ink : One of the rarest forms of Ink which is mostly used for molding statues, objects and decorating rich antiques and imbue them with defensive properties which make them harder to be damaged. This too has to be done by an Inkcaster and can’t be used by normal machinery. This Ink is also believed to bring good luck and fortune to those around it, and according to the RDC, it brings about peace and a sense of calmness when it is present. This Ink may also be used in battle by some Inkcasters whose primary techniques and ‘abilities’ are defensive. This Ink is very expensive and can’t be seen in many middle class homes. Gray Ink : Believed to be a more corrupted form of Black Ink, this Ink isn’t anywhere near as flexible as it’s origins. In fact, it is used more like a cement to hold things and if wanted, make them slippery rather than being Inkcasted, and is probably the only type of Ink which mostly doesn’t need intervention of Inkcasters in order to be used. It is available in powder form after purification and needs to be mixed with water in order to be used. If a non-purified Grey Ink is used, it might lead to collapse and destruction of houses and structures as it is mostly used in attaching the critical parts of the construction. It isn’t as costly compared to others. These are the currently known 4 types of Ink (might add more soon lol) which are used. Almost all known forms of Ink are capable of mutating/affecting organisms and ecosystems based on their varieties’ specific Ink properties. For example, Red Ink from hospital wastes may react with bacterias found in trash cans and may m lead them to become bacteria capable of cell absorption. Hypothetically saying. There is no way to determine how something will evolve from being exposed to Ink. However, when exposed to normal or lesser than normal amounts of Ink for the first time, humans react to them in 4 (5 actually) different ways. Though they don’t mutate as much as normal humans, the Pure Ink users have other limitations. These different ways are categories of Ink users that they can be classified as : Augmenting : They can use their Essence to enhance their physical capabilities and their body with Ink on their aura (used to call a lump of Essence). Due to the Essence being close to the body, it imposes extreme fatigue or muscle pain if used too much. Sometimes, this can even result in breaking of body parts and fusing with the Ink causing excruciating pain. If used well and evolving their Ink into a new state, the Ink can be fused with the body parts without causing excruciating pain and be used to ‘shapeshift’ slightly by the users. Many laborers in the industries are picked if their category is augmenting because they would be more efficient. This also leads to constant search of Augmentors in the industry through trial and error processes and this leads to the constant growth of industrialization. Shaping : They can utilise their Essence in an amoeba kind of shape which is not absolute or fixed. They can shape their Aura into things or shapes and use them in battle. For example, an individual can turn his Ink into threads and create various techniques out of it. Due to them being around the body, it severely affects the brain and can cause headaches and migraine if used too much without any protection. It even affects the senses sometimes. The Ink floats around their body and the parasite eats it, leading to an increase in Essence(and categories). Enhancing : They utilise their sticky Essence which can be used on other objects and imbue their Ink on it in order to use it in combat. This can be done in many ways. They get more and more hot the more they utilise Ink on objects and possibly weapons. So while they fight, they have to worry about their body temperature increasing and them getting hot. They can also fuse the object with the Ink and their body parts in order to prevent the stealing or knockback of weapons during battle. For example, an Inkcaster who is a pure Enhancer who can only use enhancing techniques, can Enhance 2 daggers and use them with more momentum or strength. But, this category is more efficient when used along with any other category and not so combat-oriented on it’s own. Manipulation : They can use their Essence to manipulate and alter the properties of Ink. This ability can also be used on Ink imposed/Ink-made objects if it doesn't have anyone else's Essence on it. If used too much or a high amount, it can lead to them giving in to their parasite and their thoughts being manipulated more and more until they can't think of anything to do during battle. By manipulating, it means that they can freely move their Ink anywhere they want, not limited by physics. For example, they can launch threads of Ink in the air, and when the enemy dodges it, they can manipulate it to correctly hit the target. Having this as an innate affinity is rare among people. This can also be used to mimic/reconstruct the properties of Ink to some other substance or a new imaginary substance. But this needs a high level of practise/expertise over Ink itself. But the reconstruction factor only works on refined Ink and not non-refined Ink. Ingesting : Believed to be an internal form of Augmentation, they can use their Essence present inside the body to increase their biological capabilities like more efficient neurons, more sensitive nervous system etc. This act is also said to be the only form of Inkcasting where everyone can use it regardless of their Essence category. But using this causes various side effects such as substance addiction, fight with the immune system, changing of the body’s anatomy faster etc. Abilities/Techniques : Every Inkcaster who is in a moderately high level of Inkcasting/Essence control can create their own abilities/techniques rather than simply use the basics of the category they’re bound to. Normal humans can only use their 1 category whereas the Pure Inkcasters can implement Essence of other categories into their ability as well. For example, a normal human can make it so that their ability increases physical strength while they’re an Augmentor. Whereas a Pure one, who is originally an Augmentor, can also implement the category Manipulation into it and make the Ink harder. Enhancing ----------------------------------------------- Augmenting ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Ingesting ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Shaping ---------------------------------------------------- Manipulating Now, an Enhancing Pure has more opportunities and chances to base his ability off Enhancing/Shaping/Augmenting. But it can also use manipulation as a factor. There can only be 3 maximum categories being implemented into crafting an ability. An Inkcaster can only have one primary ability and a few techniques based off of it, because the Essence and Ink can only hold some memory over it and cannot possess many abilities when used by the Inkcaster. The Pure Inkcaster will also only have limitations from their primary category even when they borrow the other categories. Examples of an ability : Smoke Dagger : The Inkcaster imbues the Ink onto their two daggers and when needed they can turn some of that Ink into smoke in order to confuse/deviate their enemies while also simultaneously attacking them. This requires a high level of expertise because they are changing its physical state as well and not only it’s strength. There are tattoos which can be imbued on their body as a curse and let’s the Inkcaster draw out more and more of their Essence reserves and helps them reach new heights for a temporary time, but at the cost being extreme limits of their affinity or excruciating pain and death without making them die immediately but more like a torture. For now this is what I've prepared. So what do you think of this system as a whole? Do you have any questions? One of my world's strongest Inkcasters will be answering it. Edit : I just realized that I suck in formatting lol. So basically all 5 of the categories are connected with Ingesting in the center and other four in their respective positions.
  15. Ugh, this is gonna be a kind of long post so thanks in advance if you bear with me Btw, EC = extended consciousness The Ink : Ink is a black liquid/slimy substance which can be extracted from the bodies of Pages, a race which come in various shapes and sizes based on their environment and evolution. Ink is not made available to the public and only some specific organizations, hospitals, hunters and some other independent organizations have their hands on a large amount of this substance. And of course, there's the black market which obtain this through many means. The quality of Ink varies from one page to another while some age over time, some get destroyed over time. Even their compositions are different. There have been efforts to mine Ink from the fossil fuels take from dead bodies of pages as well. Sometimes, it affects the entire environment it is present in. For example, while being mixed in with the soil, it can react with a tree's 'Essence' or a plant's 'essence' and shape that tree and the environment into Ink-based nightmares. Only evolution can determine what it will turn into. But Ink can only be used by Humans who are the 'Plagued'. The Plagued are a small fraction of people who aren't that rare, and have an average ratio of being 4/10 people. A unspecified time period ago, a disease or 'parasite' had gone in rampage and had taken over the entire population of the nation in a plague. This plague left some evolving immune to the parasite while others evolving with it. Over time, the parasite which evolved within them became an 'extended consciousness' of the person which can also emotionally influence a person while having a physical form which is attached to the backbone. The people who evolved with it are the Plagued. The Plagued when awakened through a traumatic experience or being exposed to a large amount of Ink, have to make a pact with their 'parasite' in order to make it not control them and lend them power. This is because up until that time, it had been living in the body without any restrictions so you have to ask it's 'Name' and make it submit. While this happens, the user's body is in a state of trance while they interact with the EC. Their parasite builds up and releases particles called the 'Essence' which helps in bending the Ink and using it to your will. When an individual/living organism is exposed to large enough amounts of Essence without any protection or even with protection of Essence, it starts to succumb and decompose into biological dirt. An individual's Essence can either be aggressive, malicious, defense etc. depending on the person and how their thoughts are being influenced by the EC. People who use Ink with their Essence are called 'Inkcasters'. An Inkcaster can only have one primary 'ability' as their Essence cannot be freely manipulated into various abilities since it has only limited memory. There are 4 categories of Essence within Inkcasters which the different variants of Parasites forces upon them : Augmenting : The Essence is closed to their body and when Ink is exposed, with the right training and talent, they can enhance their physical capabilities and their body. Due to the Essence being close to the body, it imposes extreme fatigue or muscle pain if used too much. Sometimes, this can even result in breaking of body parts. Shaping : Their Essence are surrounding them in an amoeba kind of shape which is not absolute or fixed. They can shape their Aura into things or shapes and use them in battle. For example, an individual can turn his Ink into threads and create various techniques out of it. Due to them being around the body, it severely affects the brain and can cause headaches and migraine if used too much without any protection. It even affects the senses sometimes. Enhancing : They have a sticky Essence which can be used on other objects and stick their Ink on it in order to use it in combat. This can be done in many ways. But in order to expel the essence, the EC takes control of the sweat glands. So while they fight, they have to worry about their body temperature increasing and them getting hot. Manipulation : They have a constantly moving/bending Essence which can be used to manipulate and alter the properties of Ink. This ability can also be used on Ink imposed/Ink-made objects if it doesn't have anyone else's Essence on it. If used too much or a high amount, it can lead to them giving in to their parasite and their thoughts being manipulated more and more until they can't think of anything to do during battle. There are also 7 different substances which can be mixed with the Ink using the Essence to activate in order to get varying effects. Right now I haven't decided on these 7 substances so I'll put that aside. There are tattoos too, where the Ink can be used to make tattoos in order to increase the Essence output and efficiency but is dangerous. An Inkcaster can create and form their ability from their respective categories with great training and patience while also putting up with the parasites. (Sometimes the EC can be annoying because they are literally you talking to you) But what I wanted to say from this post is that, I have been thinking of variants of parasites which fall into a category between any 2 categories. Which is having a primary category but their essence also has a sub category of the other. And since there are 4 categories (visualise a square), It will be an equal chance for any category to have a sub-category from any other category (inspiration from HxH but it's a square lol). What do you think of this system as a whole? What type of Inkcaster would you like to be? Do you have any suggestions to improve this? Once again, thanks! It would be a really great help if you comment down what you think!
  16. This role-play is set in the world of Kasjadu, a world similar to our own geographically. Kasjadu is set in the same universe as that of Zvso, it being not that far in orbit from it. It has a total of three continents, but we’re going to be focusing on one for now; however, I will keep the other continents on the backburner if anyone is interested. The continent that we’re playing with today is Huyat. Our story takes place in the City Region of Huyat, Validus. The city has been there for as long as anyone can remember, but more people have been finding refuge in its borders ever since the Magnuscassis, which was the greatest and most bloodiest war that Huyat has ever seen. All, save the Island Regions, were involved in the war, and there were terrible losses on all of the sides that did fight in it. It’s been two years since the war has ended and the treaty has been made to benefit all of the Regions, and it’s only now since the tensions have only started to ease off a bit between the people enough for them to come to terms with the existing city Validus where anyone can go to. The Prophet of the Past Generation has unexpectedly passed, and there is no other Prophet to replace her. The Prophet is the mediator of Huyat, finding peace even in the most unlikely of situations; there is only one Prophet per generation, and when one passes, another rises to take their place. The High Autarch of Validus, a Honqip by the name of Jynid Tradge, is certain that the Prophet is somewhere in the city of Validus. He believes that since the last Prophet was from the Kelijah Region and Validus would be next in the Cycle of Prophets. Although there is no exact evidence backing up his claims, a good portion of the city believes him and is on the lookout for the next Prophet of Huyat; however, there is a group named the Elegant Knives that has claimed that the Cycle of Prophets has ended, and that Jynid should be replaced with a Xefic in their group by the name of Vaos Oiuy as High Autarch. They have been using extreme methods to sway the people (e.g., assassinations of Jynid’s closest friends and family, destroying some public property, etc.) and some of the Validus people have been swayed to join their cause of believing that there is going to be no more Prophet. The people of Validus seem to be falling under the ploy that the High Autarch has been going insane after all the deaths of his closest friends and family, although they don’t know for sure that it’s been the Elegant Knives’ cause. In response to the Elegant Knives, Jynid created the Guardians of the Prophet: a strikeforce for the Elegant Knives. They have been going at each other for the past few months since the Prophet’s death. They have unspoken rivalry towards one another, and so basically think of the teams from the Pokémon video games with the rivalry against the main protagonist. The time period that we’re set in is post-industrial, but the Huyatians have literally just come out of it. They are moving along fast in technology, but they haven’t hit the technological point that we are at, as of yet. They have gunpowder, but guns have not become a household item but one for the rich to have. Most people still use blades, but they are switching to muskets and flintlocks. Fashion-wise, it is not uncommon to find women in trousers and tunics, but there are a few of the older generations that still expect women to wear those Victorian types of dresses. Basically think of Hamilton outfits, if that’s what gets you to think about. Races of Huyat The Magic System of Huyat the part y'all been waiting for [Note: People can have multiple subgroups in one of these groups of Talented, but keep in mind that we do not want super overpowered people here. Maybe make them a “jack-of-all-trades, but master of none,” but not a god. Another thing is that one does not need to have a subgroup to be one of the Talented; rather, it’s just an idea and what the people of Huyat have already identified] Characters
  17. Would you guys in the RP be supportive of establishing a monetary system in the RP? If so, what do you think it should look like?
  18. So this is my very first post on this site. I just wanted to throw this magic system out there for people to see and get their thoughts on. This magic system was created for my first ever original fantasy story--Fantasia. Fantasia is an anthology series that is separated into different sagas. These sagas take place in different points in time, one book could take place in a modern time period while another book is set during ancient times, and another in the far future. These sagas also have their own characters and conflicts, all taking place in the same world but not interconnected enough that you'll feel lost, unless they're direct sequels to each other. Overview In Fantasia, magic is the manipulation of the elements. I've taken inspiration for this system from other series like Avatar, the Witchlands book series, and the anime series Magi. Since I've never been a fan of the whole "magical gene" story element that seems to be famous these days, I've made magic as something anyone is open to learn, like music and art. But like music and art, only certain types of people are talented and skilled enough to use magic properly. Before we get into that, though, I have to get into what makes magic possible--Mana. Mana Mana is a metaphysical energy that exists in all forms of life. It exists and flows through nature and within people. The specific abilities and strengths of mana differ from individual to individual, and are dependent on a number of factors, such as experience, training and innate skill. The manipulation of mana is not magic, and there are many non-magicians who can control their mana but can't do magic. Mana can be channeled throughout the body to increase the user's physical abilities, such as strength, speed, and durability. Users can cloak their bodies in mana to protect themselves from most physical and environmental threats. They can still feel pain, though, and feel sensations such as heat and cold. Mana can be used in its raw form--as pure energy. It can be projected from the body as pure concussive force, heat and light. Mana can also be used to create energy constructs such as shields, weapons, platforms, domes, or stepping-stones. These constructs can be summoned from any part of the user's body (arms, legs and feet). Experienced users can even vary the tensile strength of their constructs to some extent, rendering it soft and yielding enough to cushion a fall from a great height. All living beings generate the same amount of mana, though this differs depending on their species. As an individual trains in mana manipulation, their body's ability to generate mana grows, increasing their reserves. A person's mana reserves degrade with use until they are left weakened or even incapacitated. An individual can recharge their mana with time, food and rest, but this recharge time differs between people. Magic Magic is the manipulation of the elements. In nature, mana flows throughout the world and everything within it. Fluctuations in this flow of mana cause events such as storms, earthquakes and tsunamis in the physical world. Magic is the art of using mana to give commands to the elements within nature to reproduce these natural events. All magic in the world is connected to the six elements: four physical--air, water, earth and fire, and two spiritual, aether and void. A mage can draw upon these elements to cast different spells. For example, a mage using air magic can cast wind and lightning spells. The art of casting a spell is done by directing one’s energy to give ceremonial commands to an element and direct that energy towards accomplishing a particular goal, often through the use of incantations and physical movements. From simple snaps to complicated hand gestures, all movements of the hands and feet are used to harness the elements and produce the desired magical effect(s). High level magicians are capable of casting spells without an audible incantation. All creatures are born with an affinity to one of the six elements. Magicians have an easier time learning to control an element that matches their affinity, although even then it may take a number of years. Mages are not limited to the element they have an affinity for, and it is in fact common for master magicians to have mastered two elements. Although it is technically possible to master all six elements, it is very rare because of how much training is involved. Few mages have total mastery of their element, as they usually specialize in a certain part of it. If a user overexerts their magical capabilities too much, it physically takes a toll on their body causing them fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness or fainting. It could also cause their energy to be drained or depleted, leaving them unable to use their magic until it recharges, leaving them defenseless. If the magician isn’t powerful enough and don’t know how to cast them effectively, they will be unable to cast incredibly powerful spells. Aether Aether is the spiritual element associated with life and the heavens. Said to be the purest of the six elements, aether magic is the art of manipulating the substance that forms the celestial heavens and affects the mind. Subtypes of aether magic include light magic, psychic magic, illusion magic, gravity magic, and space-time magic. Air Air is the physical element associated with the sky and storms. Air magic is the art of manipulating air and wind. Subtypes of air magic is lightning magic, sound magic, and weather magic. Water Water is the physical element associated with both fluids on the earth and fluids in the body. Water magic is the art of manipulating water in all its forms. It is considered to be the most versatile element. Subtypes of water magic include ice magic. Earth Earth is the physical element associated with all things linked to the earth-from stones and metals to plants and animals. Earth magic is the art of manipulating earth and earthen materials in all its various forms. Subtypes of earth magic include metal magic, plant magic and animal magic. Fire Fire is the physical element associated with heat and flames. Fire magic is the art of creating and manipulating fire. Void Void is the spiritual element associated with death and the underworld. Considered to be the darkest of the six elements, void magic is the art of controlling the chthonic substance that flows between the realm of the living and the dead. Subtypes of void magic include shadow magic, bone magic, blood magic, poison magic, and death magic. So that's my magic system for my story. I'll add another entry to this topic describing some of the subtypes of the six elements, but this is the gist of it. Thanks for reading!
  19. Hello! I'm relatively new to the forum, so please let me know if I somehow misunderstood and this isn't the right place for that. Anyway, I had an idea for a story, only I got a little stuck at some part in the worldbuilding - I'll outline what I already have here. Any help with it will be gladly accepted, but not necessarily applied, of course. BTW, I believe the magic system I thought of could get smoothly with the realmatic theory, but judge for yourself. The idea is basically about a group of animals of many species that are acting as sort of parasites to the minds of sapient creatures (actually, I also don't know the difference between sapient and sentient, I would like if someone could explain it). those animals - supposed to be creatures like foxes, wolves, bears and such (non mammals are possible) - are taking parts of the human mind to have semi-sapience, specific parts for each animal. The idea is that each species is centered around some idea it represents - so far I thought of Wisdom for owls, Change for foxes (that one's actually is a little weird, I admit), and I guess I can go with royalty or whatever for lions - maybe pride? but I don't really like this idea (and that's why they don't get to be capitalized). They could also do magic related to their Center - like foxes shapeshifting. I actually haven't build it all that much. In the world where those animals live - they're called there "the Biopsyche" (I have a little nicer name for them in my native language, Hebrew, but that's a fine enough translation, I think) by the way - there are groups who hunt them down, mainly a group named Ironrod, after their weapons, that work surprisingly well on Biopsyches. part of the idea is that the Biopsyche as a whole represents representation, and the Ironrod is the lack of thereof. There are also people who believe the Biopsyche aren't truly parasites, and that sapient species can live beside them in symbiosis. all of that is in a universe parallel to ours, and only the Biopsyche can create a portal between universes, though they leave some open. I'd like to know what you think of this, and which animals you think should be added to the Biopsyche, with which Center and magical abilities. You can also offer alternative ideas to those I've wrote here, and offer a better name to the Biopsyche. Do remember the nature of them when you offer. Biopsyche members have to be: a. a normally not sapient animal, that's b. represents an idea in our world, which would be it's Center and the source of it's magical power. Thanks for your help and your time. If it's too long for you and for some reason you expected to see here a tl;dr shortage, I'm sorry, but you won't have any. leave this thread at once, or read this from the beginning to the end even though it's long. thanks again for your time!
  20. I've run into an interesting worldbuilding dilemma- the main setting is a gaslamp fantasy series of man-made floating islands, sailing along leylines to gather magical energy to do stuff with. One of the things this magic can do is transmute, similar to soulcasting, which helps a bit with the resource problem, but there's still a very finite source of material to transmute into needed goods- and the islands are in the sky to begin with is because man-made disasters choked the surface with smog and ash. How can these sky islands collect new resources without mining the ground out from under them for stone, or leeching the limited nutrients from whatever soil they have for wood?
  21. It's been more than four months since the Other Side of the World thread was posted, and people (thank you @Arky-boi and @I think I am here.) have done some great worldbuilding around the concept. Here's a thread to consolidate what we have so far. If you have any comments, questions, or additions, post below!
  22. Recently, I have decided that I want to start my rough draft for a book I want to write. It exists in an epic fantasy setting similar to a D&D setting. I want to create one or multiple magic systems for this story that I want to be unique but at the same time reflect my love of Dungeons & Dragons with their magic system (arcane and divine). I want to make sure it is simple to understand but I want to make sure there are limitations, costs, and weaknesses to how it operates and can be accessed. I've read over Sanderson's Laws of Magic and I think they have helped me create some guidelines for myself but I still don't know where to start. I don't know how much I should add to it before I expand on it more and more. I feel like I'm in the dark on this one.
  23. I love Chulls! Chulls are my favorite! Who else loves chulls? Seeing realistic Chulls who actually move and live is one of the things I am looking forward to most about a posable Stormlight Archive adaptation. And so, I propose that we proactively name the first ever Chull to appear on screen. My suggestion is Charley Chullington. What are your ideas? P.S. An honorable mention to Chully McChullface, the first ever Chull to appear in Escape from the Shatterd Planes, the V.R. Experience. But this Thread is specifically in honor of the first Chull of the hypothetical show or movie.
  24. In my world called Teroth, there are 4 different forms of magic: Arcane Arts, Sacred Power, Druidism, and Occultism. Each form of magic focuses on casting spells and using materials, gestures, and sounds to channel them. Arcane Arts - Arcane spellcasting uses logic and rationality to categorize the magic inherent in the world around them. Because of its far-reaching approach, the Arcane Arts has the vastest array of spells for people to use, but it suffers to be able to cure the ailments and heal the world like other forms of magic. Sacred Power - Sacred spellcasting focuses on the power of the divine and users of this type of magic to call upon the many gods and goddesses living beyond the realm. This form of magic mainly focuses on healing, performing miracles, and enhancing the powers of others, with a small number of spells that do damage to others. Druidism - Druidic spellcasting is similar to Sacred Power in the fact that it uses faith to fuel it, but it dabbles more into the natural energies and cycles of the world. The Druidic spells have elemental and healing powers, as well as transformative magic. Many Druids use this power to turn into animals and control the primordial energies of the universe. Occultism - The practitioners of occult traditions seek to understand the unexplainable, categorize the bizarre, and otherwise access the ephemeral in a systematic way. Many see Occult spellcasting as evil and demonic. Many Occultists worship dark forces and elder gods to gain this form of magic. I am open to any critiques at all, so please critique away.
  25. Hello everyone! This thread is for planning a fantasy world as voted on in the Chat Thread. Fantasy is a pretty broad topic, so there are a lot of different settings that we could come up with, ranging from the extremely bizarre to the almost normal. In my opinion, it's probably best if we based it off of Sanderson magic systems, but that still leaves a wide range of possibilities open to us. A few options have already been presented, but nothing's been decided on yet. Post here if you have an idea on what you think this fantasy world should be! Master Planning Google Doc Here's what we have so far:
