  1. Now that WoR is just 4 days away, i think its a good time to show our Honour to our lord Odium by making some crazy and wacko predictions. The rules are: 1. Each person must make 10 predictions 2. They must not be overly generic 3. Each person may make only one post relating to their predictions 4. Whosoever gets the max no of predictions right (according to u) after reading Words of Radiance, must get five upvotes from u on any of their posts 5. Predictions must not be based on already released excerpts 6. You are free to speculate based on the Glimpses released by Tor I'll begin........... Here are my predictions for WoR 1. Kalasnah is definitely going to be a thing 2. Adolin does not become a Radiant in WoR 3. Sadeas does not die in WoR 4. Szeth defeats Kaladin but is intercepted by Taln who defeats him 5. Renarin does not die in WoR 6. The Parshendi "gods" turn out to be the Voidspren. 7. Elhokar dies 8. Shen betrays the Alethi but saves Bridge 4's lives 9. Kaladin learns to read and reads Jasnah's journals to learn more about Windrunning 10. The Parshendi release their gods accidentally who then take control of them. Eshonai is the one of the few who escapes because her Shardplate protects her.
  2. Wiith a close read or WoR I noticed something very interesting. In chapter 59 whiile tuning his instrument, he speaks to himself, noting how much easier this is with perfect pitch. Being a total Brandon Sanderson follower it immediately clicked that this is one of the benefits gained from awakening as noted in the Ars Arcanum of Warbreaker. This most likely means that he gained this by acquiring breaths, at least 200 since that is the requisite amount of breaths for the second level of awakening, which grants perfect pitch. This makes an interesting question, why would Hoid take these and how will he use them? We know of his fascination with magic, he did in all likelihood since there is a reference to Token in the WoR arcanum. Combined with the theory that he has a bead of lerasium, this is intriguing why he is gaining elements from all magic systems. What is his purpose?
  3. I have just over 2 hours of audio with people people getting their books signed & asking questions of Brandon. He was nice enough to let me leave my phone recording on his desk. It's about the only thing I managed to do right at the San Diego signing, after having to work late & arriving around 9pm (It started at 7). So it starts in the middle of people getting their books signed, and ends the very moment I'm about to talk to him, as that's when my phone's battery died. The store owner came outside to tell me it was saying low battery, and then let me go next as I had a lower number than the 50 or so that were still left (I wanted to be last so I could ask a bunch of questions without holding up people behind me, I only ended up asking 2 and didn't even get them recorded, though I thought it was still going). Anyway, I'd thought to transcribe the pertinent parts myself, but an apparently very fast reader totally spoiled a major thing for me about 20 minutes in and I had to stop listening to it. I saw from another thread you guys wanted the audio uploaded immediately to Soundcloud for this sort of thing (asking if people wanted to transcribe the questions, rather than wait for me to get around to it). That site limits you to 2 hours & my recording is longer than that. So I just uploaded it here instead. I'll still do it myself if no one gets to it by the time I finish WoR. Edit - The transcription is now complete thanks to Blackwood, who really stepped up. I didn't think it could possibly be done only 6 hours after my original post, but he did it! Here it is (Spoilers for Wor within): The San Diego Signing Transcript:
  4. Who here is excited for the Words of Radiance release? I know I am, but then, that's probably a silly question to post on 17S. Anyways, it's a long way to Utah for some of us, and since we can't all be here, we'll be livestreaming the event. You can read more about it here. And, of course, use this topic to discuss it when it starts. Have fun!
  5. (This special prerelease, spoiler-free review is specifically approved by Team Sanderson.) It's safe to say that Words of Radiance has the most pre-release hype of any of Brandon's solo works to-date. And it makes sense. The Way of Kings was Brandon's best work at the time, and so everyone is wondering, will Words of Radiance live up to the high bar set by book one? This is a sequel that has a ton riding on it. After all, despite the first book's length, there's still so much more of Roshar to explore. There's so many places that The Stormlight Archive can go from here, that it has been hard to predict what would happen in this book, much less a few books down the line. Words of Radiance could fall on its face. So, does it live up to the hype? Storms yes it does. "Of course you'd like the book," you immediately say. "You're a 17th Sharder, you'll love anything Brandon writes." I'd say this is somewhat true. None of us would be here if we didn't like what Brandon's done, but when you are a hyper fan, you set these books up to a high standard. You can see flaws that no one else sees, simply because you are so invested. For a while, I worried that Words of Radiance would end up like The Well of Ascension, which I have some problems with to say the least. I loved Well's ending (which made it entirely worthwhile), but rereading it is a slog for me. Well of Ascension was Brandon's first true sequel, and it shows a bit. Obviously, Brandon has grown a vast deal from almost a decade ago when that book came out, but it was still a worry. Sequels are not easy, to say the least, but it looks like finishing up The Wheel of Time really honed Brandon’s sequel chops. I also worried because--and this may sound like absolute heresy to many of you--I didn't immediately love The Way of Kings when it came out. I've come to love it after rereading it, but the first time I read it, well, while the Battle of the Tower was awesome, I had expected Part Five to be more. In all the Mistborn books the final part of the book contained even more awesomeness, but Way of Kings's final part was admittedly more of an extended prologue to the rest of the series. It took me a while to adjust to The Way of Kings and learn to love on its own merits instead of comparing it to Mistborn, which is a very different type of novel. I say this to convince you that no, we don't believe Brandon Windruns on water. So when I say Words of Radiance is absolutely phenomenal, an amazing achievement, and my favorite Brandon book to date, I'm not being a hyperbolic fan. It really is that good. It takes everything that was great about The Way of Kings and takes it up at least five notches--maybe ten or fifteen notches, even, depending on how you measure your notches. No matter which way you slice this massive tome with a Shardblade (in which case, can I have your Blade? Actually, that might be a bad idea), Words of Radiance is incredible. And when I say that everything is taken up a level, I'm again not being hyperbolic. Did you enjoy the interludes in book one? They are better and more plot important now. The epigraphs here are similarly more awesome and terrifying. The interior art? When you hold the book in your hands and see the gorgeous Shallan endpapers, you'll fall in love. Dan Dos Santos (artist extraordinaire, who did the beautiful US Warbreaker cover) does some art work and it is oh so excellent. You might think that Words of Radiance, being longer than The Way of Kings, would be a chore to get through, but you couldn't be more wrong. The plotting is so much better here. You'll be amazed by how much actually happens in this book. Every part of the book is focused and tight, and it has incredible, thrilling moments all along the way. Do you want to see more magic? Oh, we see more. Words of Radiance expands on the world and characters in such a natural way that you'll be thinking, "of course this is how it should have been. There was no other way." Brandon weaves together character development, tight plotting, and the world and magic of Roshar in a way that I can only describe as masterful. Brandon reveals so much in Words of Radiance. Things I expected to have to wait at least two or three more books to find out are explained in full by the end of the book, which leaves me to wonder "If he’s giving us this information now, what is he holding back?" Not only is the story great, it also has some of the most beautiful writing I've read--I teared up more than once, and that's rare for me--and it also has some of the most haunting writing I've ever read. And it manages to be hilarious, too (let me say that two characters meet in a rather unexpected way and leave it at that). It pulls at your emotions the entire way. It's relentless like that. You can tell how much he has grown as a writer in the years since he wrote The Way of Kings. And then, that ending. That ending. Guys, I'm not trying to deliberately hype it up for you, but you haven't seen anything yet. I had thought of giving you a summary with the spoilers heavily redacted, as in: "Then REDACTED REDACTED with REDACTED, because why not?" But I decided even that was too spoilery. All you really need to know is that there were four separate moments where I screamed "REDACT YEAH!" (insert your favorite storming swear here) in my empty apartment. Note, this was at Very Late O'Clock. So, to my poor neighbors, I would say that I'm sorry, but when you read it, you will understand the awesomeness. It was totally justified for me to scream and wake you up in the middle of the night. Pinky swear. And when the storm passes, after you think days, weeks, and months after you finish as you try to sleep "Wow, that was incredible" (I did this five times that I'm aware of), does Words of Radiance still hold up to a less hyped up mind? It really does, and there's so much depth in the book to dissect. There's also a deeper reason for why it has stuck with me. I love The Stormlight Archive for a lot of reasons, like its deep world and extensive magic. I'm a sucker for that, as many of you on 17th Shard are. But there's something more. As a genre, fantasy, with George R. R. Martin and others, has been trending towards darker, more "realistic" worlds. Stormlight Archive is not that. One criticism I hear about Brandon's works is that his characters aren't gritty or real enough. Well, you know what? I like heroes being heroes. Brandon writes about heroes. When you think about it, that's what the Knights Radiant and the Stormlight Archive are all about. What does it mean to truly be a hero? Having people try and struggle to do the right thing is fascinating, and allows for opportunities where you literally scream with joy (as I did) and just stand up and cheer. I'm so glad Brandon bucks that dark fantasy trend and gives me something to love. Wrap Up Words of Radiance is truly an achievement. It expands on its predecessor, fulfilling the promises it sets up, and manages to surpass it. There is no question about it: this is my favorite Brandon Sanderson novel. When I read The Way of Kings, I had thought that while it was (at the time) Brandon's best written novel, it wasn't my favorite, but that The Stormlight Archive series absolutely had the potential to be Brandon's best series. Well, that was entirely right. There's no doubt about it. Out of five stars, this book is ten heartbeats, with a 2:1 stars to heartbeats ratio. If you adored The Way of Kings, you will be blown away by Words of Radiance. Even if book one didn't thrill you, however, I can't see how you won't be enthralled by this volume. It really is that good. You'll be sold on the entire series with this. Fire and hammer forge a sword; time and neglect rust it away. And the same is true for The Stormlight Archive. Yes, we have seen the time and maybe even felt some neglect, but what Brandon was out of sight doing tempered his skill as a writer, and this book is the reward. The Knights Radiant will stand again, and this book is proof that they will stand for a long time. Thanks to Josh for his contribution to this review. Words of Radiance comes out in the US on March 4th, 2014, and in other territories on March 6th, 2014. Talk about the book in our Words of Radiance board.
  6. I finished the book last night (I'm still trembling), and as I read I watched theory after theory either click into place, or be refuted. I've only been active for a little while here, and so haven't read all the theories linked to the Stormlight Archive, but it sure has been fun tracking through them. For the sake of those who are just digging into the depths of the Stormlight Archive, I propose using this thread as an index to those theories; perhaps with a brief summary and a proved, disproved, or RAFO status. Some theories have been very explicitly confirmed or denied in the book, some have been more subtle. I like the idea of this thread being a place where the theories that future readers won't even wrestle with (since they'll just immediately start the next book) can have their history and the homework and speculation that went on in them preserved, instead of being buried in the forums. Discussions regarding theories should take place on their specific boards. This is just an index. It will work best if you add your espoused theories as then you can edit their status yourself, but I will do my best to begin curating them from the boards. [Mods, feel free to correct or redirect this if something like this already exists... this would perhaps be more appropriate in the general Stormlight Archive forum?]

  8. Slow reader? Trying to savor the book as much as possible? Writing down reactions as you go? Not able to get your hands on a copy yet? Come complain-brag here! I'm naturally a very fast reader, and if I had truly had it my way, I would have started at midnight and been done by now. But I had this idea that I should read along with my husband, so we can discuss it as we go. Otherwise, we would hardly be able to talk to each other for the next several days while he finishes it, because I just like to spoil things. And while he's a fast reader, he's also VERY busy right now, juggling regular work with freelance work and some volunteer things he's got on his plate. So I managed to get him to read all the readings released officially by tor.com before the release, and he read chapter 7 this morning. I'm allowing myself to go ONE chapter ahead of him at a time, so he never has to wait for me, but that means I've read chapter 7 and 11 like three times now. So excited for more! It is both nice and torturous to have to read slowly. I feel like I'm picking up on more things and savoring it more, but I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. (So, for my own sake and the sake of others who haven't gotten very far yet, keep spoilery specifics out of this thread. Feel free, though, to agonize over general emotional reactions brought about by what you have slowly read this far.)
  9. My copy of Words of Radiance!!! It is beautiful and I can't wait to get down to it... Shame I took tomorrow off work to read it and not today!
  10. I decided to take the initiative and make a topic where we can all freak out about the upcoming "glimpses" until the actual release. Feel free to ignore this until next Tuesday . For those who don't know, now that the major previews are all out, Tor is doing some thingy where they release little snippets by email. You can sign up for it here. This finally got me to sign up for a Tor account. I'll probably be spamming the WoK reread with comments now.
  11. Good Day Ladies and Gentlemen and Welcome to GAME OF TOMES. Cue thunder and lightning. Now some of you can't help it, you read really fast. Some of you have to go back work, others have to get their Sanderson fix, and some of you love the challenge. Now how you play is simple. You look at when you star reading the book and when you finish. You may only count the amount of time spent reading. if you made yourself a bagel, the time spent making Doesn't Count. If you read the pre-chapters and decide to skip the first few Doesn't Count. You must start at the beginning of Words of Radiance. Also you can't keep rereading the book to lower your time. You must swear on a truth spren (I know you are out there!) to play Honestly. The person with the lowest time is declared KING/Queen of READING!!! until the next book. Then there is a new ruler. The person with the lowest average time of the 9 Books (yes 9 because Way of Kings already happened) is declared EMPEROR OF READING! also the person with the highest time spent reading is named Court Jester and may in fact be Hoid in hiding. Let the Game of Tomes Commence , you either win or you DIE!
  12. You know how when Tor posted sample chapters of Words of Radiance, they skipped Chapter 7? Well, you can at last know what happens, as it has now been posted. You don't get to read it, but you do get to listen to it, at least the first part of it. Kate Reading's was pretty good, though the voice for Pattern is... interesting. It sounded more of Gollum and Emperor Palpatine. All I can think of is... Look, at the release, I put a blanket on my head. Emperor Palpatine things happened. Don't judge. Words of Radiance comes out TONIGHT!
  13. Hey guys. I posted some spoiler policies a while back, and I think it will be wise to mark spoilers in the Cosmere Theories board upon release for one week only. Just as a little grace period for our non-US members Next Tuesday, free reign as always, but until then, keep spoilers out of topic titles and use spoiler tags for your spoilers. Sound good?
  14. I think the duel excerpt shows us Adolin's evolution and challenge. It is theorized that a form of the Thrill is of Odium. I imagine the fight for Adolin's soul going on in the duel. He is being tempted by Odium's influence, but is starting to see another way. In tWoK Dalinar moves from feeling an unholy Thrill to fighting while regretting the necessity. Is Adolin going through the same evolution? Dalinar at the Tower: Adolin in the duel: What do people think? Is Adolin's behavior in the duel influenced by Odium? Is he being tempted? Is the sudden fading of the Thrill due to another, more Honorable influence? What does he mean when he says that "he'd never before felt like this"?
  15. Did anyone else notice that Nazh, the person who wrote the note in the WoR interior illustrations, also annotated the AoL map? Could he be another agent of the 17th Shard, or an agent of Odium?
  16. This makes me feel ultra warm and fuzzy. http://torforgeblog.com/2014/03/03/words-of-radiance-and-the-fantasy-epic/
  17. Hi I am a really fast reader and I am planning on not stopping until I am done with Words of Radiance. I am not saying this to brag but because I am wondering if we can create a new area for Words of Radiance spoilers and for book three right after the book is out for the really fast readers. We could make it separate from the regular Words of Radiance posts so we don't have people who haven't finished the book accidentally coming in. Can we do this please? I know there are at least a few other people who read really fast.
  18. Be warned: this challenge is not for the faint of heart. Seventeenth Sharders, welcome to my humble abode of challenge and book loving. I find that this is the eve of the last week before we are blessed with the release of Words of Radiance. Indeed, I must say that the warm fire of Brandonium burns comfortably in my stomach, Heightening my anticipation. However, this challenge, as I said, is not for the faint of heart; it goes beyond Skimming, involving fully Reoding the complete works of Brandon Sanderson's cosmere, in order to reAwaken our knowledge of his universe. I want to Lash out at the people who have already read it, and my impatience will make me snap. Fear not, for I have a plan. Every day, I intend on reading at least one of his books (Alloy of Law and Emperor's Soul are put on the same day). Then, on Tuesday, I will finish by devouring Words of Radiance. Here is my schedule, for those of you who are brave enough to join me: Tuesday: Mistborn, the Final Empire. Wednesday: Mistborn, the Well of Ascension Thursday: Mistborn, the Hero of Ages Friday: Alloy of Law, Emperor's Soul Saturday: Elantris Sunday: Warbreaker And finally: Monday: The Way of Kings. As I go through this Olympian endeavor, I will post my thoughts about the challenge and the books themselves. I encourage you all: Join me! Happy Reading, Sharders.
  19. Looks like this one per the stores website will be a ticketed line numbers, requiring a book purchase from B&N for line priority. Seating for the talk and Q&A is limited and first-come, first served (no saving seats). However, our open design offers plenty of standing room with great sight lines. Special Instructions Free numbered tickets to establish signing line priority will be distributed starting March 4 (release day) to customers with a copy of WORDS OF RADIANCE and a receipt from Barnes and Noble or bn.com. Tickets must be acquired in person at our store. One ticket will be given per person. One person may join the line per ticket. Attendees who wish to get a Brandon Sanderson book signed but do not have a receipt or ticket will be admitted to the queue after the ticketed customers. The author will sign any book that he has written or co-written, however he may need to limit personalizations to 3 per customer per trip through the line (that is, you may go re-enter the line a after every attendee has been through at least once). ( I am still debating between the Skokie and Milwaukee signings )
  20. Not even a week left! Can anyone else see... anticipationspren... forming all around them...? Edit: This is aimed at those whom have not yet recieved a copy of the book. Some of you, I do realize, are lucky and are probably seeing victoryspren, joyspren, et cetera, after having received a copy of the book already.
  21. There are multiple new items in Brandon's excellent store. Just in time for Words of Radiance, there are multiple Stormlight related things in the store. You can get both t-shirts and decals of the Stormlight Archive symbol (seen here), as well as the Bridge Four Glyph. You can also get an actual patch of the Bridge Four glyph, just like Kaladin gets in Book Two. Finally, you can get a beanie with Kaladin's slave brands on it. Check out below for images of all the awesomeness. Looking at the Bridge Four t-shirt, it is pretty darn slick. It's hard to zoom in and see, but the Bridge Four symbol there is made up of the Second Ideal of the Windrunners. Sweet! You guys know you can buy signed hardcovers from Brandon's store, right? Including books that are hard to find in hardcover? You can get them personalized, too, and they are very reasonable prices. Also, how are there still Feruchemical Tables left? They are huge and beautiful. Get on it! Yes, we're shilling, but hush. Brandon's redesigned store looks fantastic and there are so many cool things (like jewelry!) you can get. Bridge Four Decal: Bridge Four Patch: Bridge Four Shirt, made up of the words "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves": Kaladin's Slave Brand Beanie: Stormlight Archive Shirt: Coming to the Words of Radiance release at BYU? Let us know here! Words of Radiance comes out March 4th in the US and March 6th elsewhere.
  22. I'm not trying to deliberately hype you guys but it's really good: http://www.17thshard.com/news/brandon-news/our-spoiler-free-words-of-radiance-review-r151
  23. Words of Radiance comes out in just a few days. On Tuesday, March 4th, the wait will be over--well, for those in the US. Sorry everyone else But what if you missed some of the preview Words of Radiance content? Fear not, for we have you covered, to hopefully sate you over from the hype you might be feeling. Preview Chapters These are the officially released preview chapters, which are in the exact state as they appear in the book. However, a few epigraphs are removed for REDACTED REDACTED reasons. Prologue (Jasnah), Chapter 1 (Shallan), Chapter 2 (Kaladin) Chapter 3 (Shallan), Chapter 4 (Dalinar), Chapter 5 (Kaladin) Chapter 6 (Shallan), Chapter 8 (Dalinar), Chapter 9 (Kaladin) Chapter 10 (Shallan flashback), Chapter 12 (Kaladin), Chapter 14 (Adolin), Interlude 1 (Eshonai) Interlude 9 (Lift) Taravangian Interlude (excerpt) Older Readings We post this in completeness, but remember, these come from older drafts of the book. They are not final, and many of these are excerpts. All of these are interludes, and remember that these were transcribed from readings, so spelling is not entirely accurate. Other readings existed, but have been released in final form, as linked above. Rysn Ym Also, while we're at it, check out some Words of Radiance interior art Tor posted on Wednesday. Coming to the Words of Radiance release party? Let us know, and we'll see you there! Discuss the Words of Radiance sample chapters and the entire book upon release in our Words of Radiance forum.
  24. Words of Radiance is very much a real thing, and you can see how large it is on this lovely image of Brandon's agent, Joshua, being crushed by the mighty tome. If you didn't know, Words of Radiance is actually longer than A Memory of Light and previous reigning champion of doorstops, The Way of Kings. Words of Radiance is even better at clubbing your opponents unconscious*. And as we are getting closer to release, we now have information on the release events for the book. (*17th Shard does not condone assaulting people with massive tomes.) Brandon's blog today described all of the release event goodies, the first of which being the usual BYU Midnight Release, which will be at midnight, March 4th. A lot of the 17th Sharders will be attending and camping (ideally this time without blowing a circuit...), so come join us and have fun! We'll be Soulcasting up some Stormlight trivia questions, ranging from Easy to "The Stormfather Wouldn't Dare" difficulty. It'll be a blast! For the midnight release, you should preorder the book, as BYU might run out. To do this, go to byubookstore.com and choose the shipping option, "Service Desk Pickup, 3rd Floor" so you will get it at the midnight release. Doing this will guarantee you get a copy. As usual, your number will correspond to who shows up in line first. They'll be handed out 7am on Monday, and then you will be free to leave and come back for the signing. If you can't go to the midnight release, fear not! You can also order from Weller Book Works and they will ship a signed and numbered copy to you. Due to Words of Radiance's truly impressive (weapon-grade) size, shipping runs $13 for the US, and more expensive elsewhere. Did we mention it's a big book? It's a huge book. The ordering period is from February 7th to February 15th, so act fast. More details and pricing can be found on Brandon's blog post. Lastly, you can get some "Glimpses of Radiance"--daily previews of the book, including sentences, paragraphs, epigraphs, and quotations--from Tor.com here, which will begin February 11th!
