  1. Looks like Brandon and Tor will have some promotional giveaways of a Szeth cutout for his WoR Tour! Only 1000 of the giveaways, but apparently each one will have a code that can be entered into on some special website that will have special bonus contents and giveaways! Tor.com has a post with more details Good luck to all those who attend the Tour!
  2. Here are all of the readings from Words of Radiance that have been released so far. This list is going to be updated when more come out. Also, the spelling of any new names are merely approximations, not intended to be completely accurate. Jasnah Prologue Kaladin - Chapter 2 Dalinar's Vision Shallan Flashback 1 - Red Carpet, Once White Eshonai Interlude Rysn's Interlude Ym Interlude Lift Interlude Taravangian Interlude Enjoy!
  3. Hello all! I'm just wondering, how do you intend on reading Words of Radiance the first time through? I find that I'm in an interesting position, namely due to the timing of the signing that I'm able to attend. It's on Thursday, a mere two days after it comes out. Now, this is quite possibly the worst timing for it, because it tempts me to read it before hand (so I can ask questions about it), though I will probably have to skim through it in order to finish on time. So, I'm trying to figure out what I need to cut out in order to get a detailed enough read for my questions to be deep and cosmere relevant. The biggest thing that comes to me is the Interludes, but I really really don't want to miss those, mainly because those are the best things when it comes to exploring Roshar. Thoughts?
  4. Tis a sad day for us all. For while there are brand new Words of Radiance sample chapters, Brandon said on his most recent blog that this is going to be the last of them. So, rejoice, as there is more awesome Words of Radiance content! Then, weep because we have to wait till March 4th to read the rest of the book. This time, we get Chapters 10, 12, 14, and the first interlude. We see the first Shallan flashback, the end of part one from Kaladin's POV, and the first Adolin POV, from part two (note the new epigraphs). We also see the first Eshonai interlude, in full, which Brandon read a long time ago, but now we see in its final state! We'll keep you up-to-date with all the latest Words of Radiance news that's upcoming. We still don't have tour dates or any info about the release party, so stay tuned! And with the samples done, we'll have a big post summarizing absolutely everything we know about Words of Radiance coming soon. Discuss the new chapters in our spoileriffic Words of Radiance board! Also, do you browse or edit the Coppermind? Here's how we'll deal with the massive work that Words of Radiance will mean for the wiki.
  5. If someone pounded some spikes into Lift and gave her Feruchemical and Allomantic Bendalloy so she could compound nutrition/calories, would she have unlimited awesomeness?
  6. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/02/beta-reading-words-of-radiance This was just posted on Tor.com about the process of reading Words of Radiance in beta and gamma reads. It doesn't tell us anything new, except that there are... in part five. So what do you think of this review? It's a cool look at the process of beta reading, so I suggest taking a look.
  7. This is my first post, so I'm going to have to ask you to stick with me here. Honor, aka the Almighty, as we all know, is dead, splintered by Odium. My first thought was 'Oh, then the Spren must be his splinters.' WRONG. The spren have been around during the time of the Almighty, as shown by one point in the book (possibly a Words of Radiance spoiler) This says that Surgebinders existed during the time the Almighty was alive, and thus so did the spren (Nahel Bond). However, that does not mean the Spren are not -of- the Allmighty. I believe that all spren are a form of the Almighty's investiture in the world, as they seem to have all -bonded- with specific emotions/elements/abilities. WoR spoiler Now, second part of this theory. If the spren are all from Honor, what does that leave Cultivation? Well, that leaves him with Shinovar. Think about it. Unlike what Ruin and Preservation did, fighting for power, Honor and Cultivation decided to split up the land, they made a deal of sorts. Honor would get the land and shape it any way he wanted so long as it didn't mess with Cultivation's area. Thus the mountains around Shinovar so that Cultivation's land wasn't effected by the Highstorms. This would explain many things. First of all, it explains the lack of spren in Shinovar, since Honor has no sway there. Second, it would explain why the Shinese revere farmers and hate warriors, since warriors have to do with Honor, and farming has to do with Cultivation. Thirdly, it might explain the Shinese reverence of rock. The mountains that separate Shinovar from the rest of Roshar could be a holy symbol of their god's protection. Small side theory, I think Cultivation might actually be a man, since at the end of WoK, when Taravangian is talking to Szeth, he says, "Sometimes I wonder if the Lifebrother himself sent you to me." I know the Lifebrother is a nickname for one of the Heralds, and the Herald might have been an Edgedancer, which would explain Lifebrother, you know, growing plants and healing people could have to do with Life, but that is just a side theory. (thanks for the comments. I believe the Lifebrother might still be a Herald, though not Cultivation, and I do feel slightly stupid for posting this part.) WoR spoiler WoR spoiler Szeth's people, under the command of Cultivation, who I believe not only is still alive, but occasionally communicates with his/her people, gave Szeth a Shardblade as mentioned in the before quoted conversation with Taravangian. Not only does this mean Kaladin has the potential to be an immensely more powerful Windrunner but also gives an implication that the Nightwatcher is Cultivation. I say this because perhaps Szeth wished for the powers of a Radiant, and so got Windrunner powers, but in return for the great cost of being eternally enslaved, doomed to kill, and yet seemingly absolved of all sins he is forced to commit, for this is the price their god made him commit. Any thoughts?
  8. Weller Book Works is now accepting requests for signed & number copies of Words of Radiance. According to the email I received: A maximum of two copies may be ordered per customer. The price is $23.19 per copy plus tax and/or shipping if applicable. That's 20% off the cover price of $28.99. All shipping is via USPS Priority Mail. Because of the large size of Words of Radiance, we cannot securely ship it in a padded envelope, so all books will be shipped in a medium box. Shipping prices are as follows:US Domestic box - $13.00 Canada Priority Mail box - $ 42.00 All other international Priority Mail box - $62.00 Orders will be purchased with Paypal only. All orders must be placed via e-mail by e-mailing [email protected] (subject line: Words of Radiance orders). When you order, please let us know how you would like your copy personalized. Tell us "signature only" if you just want it signed and numbered. If you would like it signed to you or to a friend, say, e.g., "Sign it 'to John.'" If you have a PayPal account, please include your PayPal email in your order so that we can invoice you. Please include your shipping address when ordering. This promotion is limited to 500 copies of Words of Radiance, and all orders must be received and paid for by February 15, 2014. This is one of the rare occasions I am truly happy to live in the US. $62, or even $42 for shipping is a little more than what I am comfortable paying for a number and a signature (the latter of which I can get on a signing a couple of weeks after the release). Also, the fact that the book is too big to fit in a padded envelope and has to go in a medium box is pretty wonderful too.

  10. While reading the Dalinar vision from WoR Chapter 4, I realized this line once everybody began fighting the Thunderclast within the vision. Dalinar finished repeating the words. Beyond him, the fight began in earnest, water splashing, rock grinding. Soldiers approached bearing hammers, and unexpectedly, these men now also glowed with Stormlight, though far more faintly. It seems that using Stormlight is not exclusive to those with the Nahel bond. This passage in WoR shows that the common soldiers were also able to use a technique that allowed them a somewhat stymied flow or stormlight...or the stormlight leaked from them much more quickly. Just like Szeth. If this is the case, I do no believe Szeth is alone in the Shin society of warriors who are capable of using stormlight. With this information, I foresee Moash, Sigzil and others to also find a way of using stormlight, albeit with much shorter times(like Szeth) of holding it.
  11. The following sections seem interesting together. Jasnah seems to have had an interesting history about which we get only glimpses. When Jasnah kills the four thieves (tWoK chapter 36): Chapter 1, WoR Jasnah loses her poise at the thought of being beholden to a man? Does it seem like being sold into slavery to her? Prologue, WoR Is Amaram one of the men she has a negative history with? Maybe Kaladin is not the only one who has seen his dark side.
  12. Of course you were thrilled by the awesomeness of the first bit of Words of Radiance, and you just can't wait for more. Well lucky for you, Tor has the next three chapters up! You can find them here! We've seen part of the Dalinar chapter and its vision before, but all the rest is new! I wonder how many more sample chapters we will get, considering we still have two months left before the book comes out. Discuss these chapters and more in our spoilerific Words of Radiance board on the forums. If you've managed to resist reading Words of Radiance, though, you have more willpower than me...
  13. This was inspired by a similar thread by Bloodfalcon in the non-spoiler forum, so credit him with some of the value (if any) of this post. Any failings of this post, on the other hand, belong to me exclusively. Edit: Aand there are failings ... As Aether pointed out below, the timelines do not match. Gavilar was assassinated 5 years and 8 months before the main events of tWoK. At the end of tWoKTaravangian says the death rattles started 7 years earlier when Gavilar investigated the Shattered Plains for the first time. So there must have been a year between when he first investigated the plains and his assassination. Whatever Gavilar did the day of his assassination could not have triggered the death rattles because they started a year earlier. Gavilar destroyed a barrier that had been in place between spren and men, the cognitive realm and the physical. With the barrier down, the spren are trying to communicate with humanity by giving dying people ideas that they then speak. The reasoning follows: Gavilar told the Parshendi he was going to do something. It scared them so much they had him killed. Gavilar claims to have already done something to Szeth. Mr. T claims the death rattles started at about the same time: "We do not know why some speak when others do not," Taravangian said. "But the dying see something. It began seven years ago, about the time when King Gavilar was investigating the Shattered Plains for the first time." People seem to be bonding spren pretty frequently. Jasnah says: "The old ways are returning, and I don’t see it as a hopeful sign. It’s an act of self-preservation. The spren sense impending danger, and so they return to us." Jasnah had a forceful encounter with her spren the same night Gavilar was assassinated. The Radiants abandoned their weapons and their role along with presumably their oaths and Nahel bonds Darkness claims Surgebinding will bring on a desolation This leads to the prefatory theory: Gavilar destroyed a barrier that had been in place between spren and men, the cognitive realm and the physical. But why do the dying people see things that seem significant in the death rattles? Jasnah suggests the spren sense the coming desolation and want to help avert/survive/prepare for it. The spren are choosing important thoughts and presenting them to the dying to be expressed. But how does that work? I haven't a clue. But hopefully this will help inspire an idea that replaces or enhances it. Enjoy!
  14. I've just found this site and the cosmere. I had no idea. I've spent the last few days poking around this site and long story short my minds been blown and have alot of information I've been trying to sort out in my head. That being said I have a few theories of my own. Also a few questions hopfully I'm not rehashing things thats been done before. It seems alot of people are going with Eshoni, as the explorer mentioned on the cover of WoR. Personally I'm leaning toward Rysn. There is definatly somthing going on with her. She travels alot for trade and to places we only see through her. Then the whole scene of the soul of the greatshell saving her and giving her the larkin. I know the broken legs might hamper the whole exploring thing but she could heal and continue her travels. (speaking of the larkin, could that be the same type of creature darkness used to drain lift of her stormight?) Next topic, Honourblades and shardblades. Where to start. My first thought I want to put out there is about the one differnces between the blades when a herald dies his blade disapears, but when a shard bearer dies his blade appears for who ever wants to take it. I'm thinking along the lines that the honourblades are the origonals earned by the hearalds when they took the oathpact possibly given by honor himself. And shardblades are a fabrail type knock off created by man for the KR, Since fabrails have spren trapped inside when the user dies the blade can be used by anyone. Possibly in the making of a shard blade the spren trapped inside chooses to become a blade for one they choose worthy. That could be why Syl says Dalinar is better off without it because he didnt earn it and the spren inside did not choose him. I know theres no evidance for this but its just my idea. It could be Dalinar isnt meant for a blade but a shard hammer?!? I just thinking of when hes in that ditch beating away at the rocks and how it gave him claraity and time to think, sort of like Kaladin and his spear. Also a shardhammer seems to fit in with his order people are leaning to...stoneward i think it was. Well I've rambled enough for my first post but you can be sure it wont be my last. I hope I was able to get my ideas across like i want to. I'm not very good at putting my thoughts into words. Let the bashing begin!
  15. Mind... blown. So many things. Cities! Betrayal. The Recreance? Spren dying? I think they could have been killed with Shardblades, but maybe being detached from their cognitive selves as Syl was might be enough of an offense. So did the spren see Shallan's latent talent and create her cockamamie plan to steal the Soulcaster in order to get her and Jasnah together? Were the spren working with the ideas in Shallan's mind when she decided to travel to find Jasnah? It would explain her fabulous artistic abilities - that's why she was chosen. Did they help with the events that precipitated the plan - her father's death? Is the spren that is following Shallan different from her bonded cryptic or is that how the cryptic manifests outside of her drawings? What happens in the Cognitive Realm when Shallan takes a memory?
  16. Yes, I know that Kurkistan figured this all out and posted the solution years ago. But I still have questions, and I'm not smart enough to understand what he wrote anyway. 1. What was the not quite the sun, not quite the moon thing in the sky that Shallan drew? Heaven? The sun for real? 2. How can there be air in the cognitive realm? I could see that your body in the physical realm needs to breathe, but why is air not a bead in the cognitive realm? If we think about the air in the cognitive realm, do we create a cognitive realm of the first cognitive realm? Is there air in the cognitive realm's cognitive realm? 3. Physical location correspond to locations in the cognitive realm. Jasnah can grab the palace bead when she is in the palace. But the beads go flying around. In the physical realm the relative locations of the objects that correspond can't be changing similarly. Do the locations not have to correspond? Do the beads find their way back to where they're supposed to be? Are there spren janitors that put them back where they belong? But the Palace bead should encompass countless other beads to match up. When it is a little bead itself, how can it be in the corresponding location? Have some beads gotten put in remote places relative to their physical neighbors? Help!
  17. Guess what? It is January 2014, which means Words of Radiance is coming out in just two months. In fact, if you follow the social medias, you already know that Words of Radiance is basically done (just the final proofs need to be turned in, and then it is done). So you know what that means: new sample chapters. Here are the prologue, chapter 1 (Shallan's first chapter), and chapter 2 (Kaladin's first chapter). This, combined with the Lift Interlude, means you get all the Words of Radiance chapters from the Steelhunt, and more, as the prologue and chapter 1 are totally new. And what chapters they are. Discuss these at our Words of Radiance Spoiler board! Also, you'll see that this image here is the final Words of Radiance cover art, with an improved Kaladin. Stay tuned for more Words of Radiance news. This weekend, we will have a comprehensive guide of everything we know about Words of Radiance so far, so look forward to that!
  18. Hello all and Happy New Years Eve! Since this is the last day in a year where we cruelly won't be able to read WoR I started this thread to look to the future. Here's the deal. Below you must post one wish and one resolution regarding the release, content, or way in which you will enjoy WoR in the New year. Enjoy! Wish: It is my sincere wish that Kaladin, Jasnah , and Dalinar can get together and have an honest conversation about what's going on in the world. I really hope this series doesn't perpetuate itself and drive the story based on WOT style secrets and lack of communication. I don't think Kaladin will ever feel warm and fuzzy to lighteyes but at least give up the info buddy! Resolution : I resolve to actually sleep at night in the days it will take me to read the book. I have a little baby and a job and I need to take it easy and take my time. Rushing thru will only lead to me skimming over important things and also being a zombie at work. It's more important to stay healthy than get to the end. I mean Journey before Destination, right? Alright kicking it out to you all. What do you wish of WoR and yourself in 2014?
  19. I don't know if this has been suggested or disproved yet, but I thought I'd put this out there. Ym describes his religion (the Iriali religion) to the boy he's fitting with shoes. He says talks about One, which was once One, but is now Many. The reason for being many was to gain experiences that could only be experienced by the Many being in different circumstances, some better, some worse. I was wondering if this has any link with Adonalsium. We know that Adonalsium split into 12 16 shards (Thanks Gamma), each which embodies a particular Intent, which were then went throughout the Cosmere, settling on planets, and investing themselves, sometimes even creating life/consciousness. They then (or as a result of the previous) influenced the world with their Intents, rewarding actions that resulted in particular ways. I believe it has been wondered what the point of Adonalsium would be before it split. Each shard has an intent, but add them all together and what do you get? Adding two opposing Intents (or their interpretations by their wielders) resulted in Harmony in the case of Sel(?) Scandrial. Is this not likely to also be the result of all intents being One? If I've missed something, or if this sounds like rubbish, or WOB has already ruled this out, please tell me! Thanks
  20. So you have almost assuredly known that Brandon has been posting videos of an interlude in Words of Radiance, which features Rysn, a character from an interlude in The Way of Kings. After all, Brandon has posted twelve videos of it over the past while, and posted a a few weeks ago. But, maybe you don't really want to watch a video of it. Maybe you just want to scroll at your own pace. Well, fear not, for the great and powerful Windrunner has transcribed the video for your perusal! Click here to read it in it's glory! If you aren't opposed to Words of Radiance spoilers, you should really read it. Especially if you like greatshells... I would also say that this is a first draft of the book, so obviously it will be a bit rough.
  21. Maybe you guys remember a while back when Brandon posted a bit of Amaram dialogue in Morse code on reddit? Well, he's done a similar thing again, here! Pretty sweet, no? Unless I'm mistaken, we haven't seen much of present-day Shallan from WoR, yet.
  22. Pitching my first theory (of the crazy kind) here on 17thshard; let’s see how this goes. (Disclaimer 1: I’ve been through the forums and I don’t think this theory has been pitched before; I haven’t seen anything like this since the Seattle signing post, where I first saw the term Bondsmith) (Disclaimer 2: As we all know there is very little information on the 10 orders of Knights Radiant, the creation of Shardblade & Plate; and to be even more specific, all we know about Bondsmiths are the name, and the presumption that that is the name of Kalak’s Order. But hey, that’s why this is a loony theory! ) I propose that Shardblades (and therefore most likely, Shardplate) are created/generated/called-into-being initially by BondSmiths. Brandon has given to us (or confirmed) the names for 8 of the 10 orders, and given/confirmed the location of 7 of the 8. Bondsmith has to fit the position of either Kalak’s (builder/resolute), Ishar (pious/guiding) or Palah (learned/giving) order, and the predominant belief on this forum (which I share) is that Bondsmiths are in Kalak’s order, which… makes the most sense, given the options. So working off the assumption that Bondsmiths are in between Elsecallers and Stonewards, a few supporting points to this loony theory: 1) Transportation Surge. Shardblades are theorized to rest in the Spiritual realm until they are summoned. Summoning clearly involves some aspect of transportation from the Spiritual realm to the Physical realm (I have another loony theory where I propose that Elsecallers can summon things –and possibly beings/creatures- from or through Shadesmar/Cognitive realm that I may write up soon), and there needs to be some way in which the blades have some kind of connection (or bond, if you will) established between the 2 realms that allows them to travel back and forth when called and released. There needs to be another bond between the wielder of the blade and the blade itself (still need to read that book and series, someday). There also needs to be the disruption of the target-of-the-blade’s soul (maybe severs the connection of a being’s soul (spiritual) with their body (physical) or some other effect; I’m still working on this). All of this requires some type of interaction between the spiritual and the cognitive realms that Transportation may provide. It’s possible that Bondsmiths are able to invest the Blades with these types of attributes. 2) Surface Tension-like Surge. Shardplate has been shown to adjust adapt to the size of the person that wears it. It also fits seamlessly on the wearer, but allows a freedom of motion and agility to the wearer that normal, stiff armor doesn’t allow. It’s possible that the Bondsmith’s control over the Surface Tension-like force that Brandon described (allowing for things that are flexible to become rigid on command) plays a role in making Shardplate flexible for the wearer while still maintaining its structure and solidity. It’s also possible that when proper Knights Radiant are wearing the Plate, they are able to retract the helm and visor at will, as we saw in Dalinar’s flashback with the Knights in Starfall (although this has even less basis in what we know then the rest of my theory; just pure speculation on my part). Perhaps Bondsmiths are able to invest the Plate with these types of attributes. 3) Name of the Order. They are called Bondsmiths. The implication that they make tools, weapons or armor is kind of inherent in the name. Also that they forge some type of bond between things. Kelek has the attributes of Resolute and Builder. Who knows, he could have even shown the first Bondsmiths how to create the Shardblade and Shardplate. And to go even loonier with this theory, Kelek’s body focus are the nails, which by extension is the hands. One summons the Shardblades and they land in the summoner’s hands. Again, this is highly likely to be coincidental, but you never know, right? 4) Knights Radiant composition. If we accept that the Knights Radiant is a complete fighting force, it would make sense that there are different divisions and specialties among the Radiants. Some of the folks here have theorized that the Windrunners and Stonewards would be like shock troops, and that Palah’s order could be like medics, and that other orders would provide some type of direct combat or support role. Every army also needs specialists who focus on weapons and armament. It would be logical that a Knights Radiant Order would specialize in the creation and maintenance of the army’s primary offensive and defensive equipment. And possibly be able to cater those weapons to a specific fighting style or strength of each individual. Maybe that's why each Shardblade appears to be different; they are designed especially to the strengths and specifications of the weilder. So there we are; my first theory on 17thShard. Is it fairly unsubstantiated, with wild speculation and very little hard evidence? Sure. But is it possible? (And more importantly, did you have fun reading it?) I look forward to any feedback. I don’t know every theory that has been submitted and debunked out there, so it’s possible that a lot of this could be off, and I'd be happy to hear what does/doesn't work in this theory. But wouldn't it be cool if this was one more piece to the puzzle?
  23. Hey, I decided that as much as I would like to, I will not have time to read Words of Radiance all in one night. After coming to terms with that idea, and the fact that I would then have to be off the forums for the duration of the read, I decided I would post an alternate solution, and propose it to 17thSharders as well. I think it would really be a great time if a group did the reading "together" over the course of say.... 2 weeks? I don't know, it is flexible, but the idea is that every night, we read 2 or 3 or x chapters, then come on the forums to discuss what we are thinking without moving along. It would really be fun to see peoples end-of-chapter or end-of-part reactions instead of just the thoughts we see when book-long arcs are finally concluded. It would be like watching episodes of your favorite tv show and talking to your friends while you wait for the next episode. PLUS: On a night that you just can not wait, you can read, post your reactions, and then continue reading but not post until the next day. It would take a good amount of self control, but I think it would be worth it for those of us who can't finish it in a night or two anyway. If anyone finds this idea interesting, I'm game for it, just let me know.
  24. With the Spokane reading from the WoR prologue, we have a Jasnah POV for the night of Gavilar's assassination. This thread is to discuss what we have learned and what hints we can find. Here's what I noticed: The reference to a creepy slave seems like it could well be Szeth, in which case we get some more backstory for him. If true, it still doesn't explain how/why the Parshendi had him and why they thought they could entrust the assassination to him. Jasnah hiring assassins is a new side of her. It seems to hint that she is not unwilling to use them as assassins, an interesting activity for a budding Radiant. Does she develop her Radiant abilities later or is assassination compatible? When considering the party, she thinks of her uncle's activities, but not her brother, mother or father. While it could be a personal connection to one of many getting smashed at the party, it seems a bit odd. When combined with her not-close interactions with her mother in tWoK, it suggests to me that there is a story that may predate her father's death. Shallan doesn't seem to have witnessed any spymaster activities, so either she stopped at some point or she has been hiding it from Shallan. If Jasnah can arrange for a maid to be released and another hired, Jasnah presumably already has a highly placed agent in her sister-in-law's entourage. Are some of these whiffs? What else is there?
  25. I came up with this theory after my third read of The Way of Kings and it's a little weird, but I decided to post it in case I turned out to be right. (If someone else has already thought of this, feel free to slap me) Essentially, my theory is that Parshendi turn into Chasmfiends. Originally (before the Parshendi Interlude reading) I imagined the Parshendi pupating in to baby chasmfiends, but I think the it works even better now that we know something about their forms. My reasoning is kind of flimsy, mostly just some random connections. First, Parshendi and Chasmfiend blood smells the same (moldy), second we know that at least one form involves the Parshendi become more crustacean, and third, chasmfiends in their cocoons are waiting for a highstorm, supposedly, and we know that Parshendi change forms during highstorms. These connections could simply mean that they both have similar means of changing shape, but not that they're necessarily different forms of the same creature. Or this could just be the product of bad theory crafting. Any thoughts?
