  1. So this is my first ever post on the forums. There might already have been a theory about this but I was thinking about it. I was rereading The Way of Kings and I came to Ishikks chapture in the first interlude. As far as I can remember this is the only time we meet him in the Stormlight Archive. Now the interesting part of the chapture is at the end when the meeting is over and the foreigners are leaving. The man Ishikk called Grump said, "Where are you, Roamer? What a fool's quest this is." Now the interesting part is what he said in his own language, "Alavanta kamaloo kayana." That if I'm not mistaken is Duladel from Sel due to the word, kayana. I dont think the same word from Elantris is a coincidence. So foreigners from Sel are on Roshar looking for Hoid. I'm excited for Oathbringer to see if there's a chapture on Ishikk or the Foreigners. Looking forward to your thoughts and theories regarding it.
  2. Normally I'm incredibly against rereading books. But with anything written by Sanderson, my opinion changes. There is just something about the way he writes that allows me to enjoy rereads as much, if not more than the first time. It might be the way he makes characters so believable and human, it might be the way every world he makes seems so real. It might be the way I can find a way to connect with almost all of his characters. Or maybe I just like the mystery of knowing he has the entire Cosmere planned out, and know close to nothing about it. But what I want to focus on here, is just a collection of all the excellent foreshadowing Sanderson does in his works. I'm currently almost done with my fifth reread of Warbreaker, and I still am finding things he foreshadowed that I had never picked up on before. So as you find foreshadowed events, or reveals in your rereads, please post them here and I'll keep updating this post so there can be a collection. I wish I had more quotes to start this with, but I'm sure everyone on the forums will be eager to contribute . I hope everyone finds this aspect of Sanderson's writing as intriguing as I do and hopefully this can turn into a pretty exhaustive list! Basically I'm just looking for quotes or specific situations that help the reader find out what is going to happen later in the books. Not so much things that hint towards the greater Cosmere, but the outcome of the specific book or series. Please give a chapter + quote or situation so I can put them in order! Warbreaker Elantris Stormlight Archive WoK WoR Mistborn Final Empire Well of Ascension Hero of Ages
  3. In chapter 59 of the Way of Kings, it opens with this death rattle: I don't know if anyone's said this before, but I think this refers to Kaladin speaking the Second Oath of the Windrunners. The "final void" is the chasm, the "friends behind" are the bridgemen, and the "friends before" are Dalinar's army. The "feast I must drink" is Stormlight, and the "clings to their faces" refers to the Parshendi's beards. The "words I must speak" is the Oath. Am I right? Has everyone else figured this out before me?
  4. I think that the following death rattle deals with the mystery surrounding Taln. Now, we know that it's most likely that the person we think is Taln is some sort of imposter. We know this because of a WoB where he refuses to confirm that the person who claims to be Taln is who he says he is. So we are left with several questions. Mainly, who is this imposter, where did he come from and how did he get Taln's Shardblade? My theory is as follows. The death rattle quoted above refers to both Taln and his imposter. They are the two dead men who came from the pit. "The pit" would be referring to Braize, the purgatory where the heralds are relegated to in between Desolations. The "heart in their hands" is referring to Taln's Honorblade. Remember, before the Blade got switched out for a plain old Shardblade, the blade that Taln's imposter was carrying seems to be an Honorblade. I think that the Honorblade is instrumental in returning the Heralds from Braize to Roshar. They certainly grant investiture as evidenced by Szeth's manifestation of windrunner abilities. It's not too much of a stretch to say that the Honorblade is the "heart" that they are holding. "True Glory" can refer to one of two things. The obvious thing is the glory of a herald. The other requires me to elaborate on my theory. Here's what I think happened. Someone came to Braize to rescue Taln or to inform him of the coming Desolation. He would have to be a worldhopper and a powerful one at that to survive the hellfires of Braize. We see evidence of his power when he catches the poisonous darts fired at Amaram mid-flight. This however doesn't seem to match what we know as Heraldic powers. The heralds' powers I believe were just stronger versions of the knights radiant. For example, Jezrien would've been a really strong Windrunner, perhaps an immortal one in terms of aging. However, the heralds were not supermen. Superspeed was not, as far as I know in their repertoire. Nor is it in the repertoire of any of the invested beings on Roshar as far as I know. Maybe he's a Feruchemist (unlikely, but he could have tapped speed, after all his hand motion is described as a blur.) Regardless, his powers are not those of a Rosharian. So he goes to save Taln. He finds him, but Taln refuses to leave Braize. He feels that he must hold to the oathpact for fear of letting Odium free. The Oathpact is, I assume, what has bound Odium to the Rosharian System. However, he still feels the need to send help. Therefore he sends his Honorblade with the imposter and instructs him to help the Rosharians. Something goes wrong and the imposter loses his mind. Not sure why. The "Glory"is the sacrafice made by Taln in order to uphold the Oathpact. Wooooo..... Okay so hopefully most of that wasn't nonsense. Please comment and tell me what you think. P.S. I do think that the imposter is someone that Hoid knew. He refers to him as "My confused, unfortunate friend." Perhaps this was a friend of Hoid's on some previous Hoid adventure.
  5. So I'm doing a reread of the Way of Kings, this time with a bit more foreknowledge of the Cosmere -- firstly to see what else I notice, but also because it is a great series. The sample I referenced in the title is thus: ""Three of sixteen ruled, but now the Broken One reigns." -Collected: Chachanan, 1173, 84 seconds pre-death. Subject: a cutpurse with the wasting sickness, of partial Iriali descent." With many of them I kind of understand what it means, but with this I just can't be certain. My current thoughts are that it refers to the 3 Shards within Roshar's system: Cultivation, Honour, and Odium, and how Cultivation isn't really doing anything now, Honour is dead and so Odium -- "the Broken One" -- can do whatever he wants. So, have any WoB suggested that this is significant, and have I understood it (so far as we know) correctly?
  6. Ok, Friends. Help me out here. For I have gone and convinced myself of something crazy! Sorry, I'm new to the forum and I don't know how to do that cool "spoiler" button yet. Please be aware that this theory mainly concerns The Stormlight Archive: Way of Kings and will have spoilers for the stormlight series. But because of said theory, this post will also contain spoilers from the Alloy of Law. So please continue reading at your own risk! If you have read both books, please give your thoughts on this theory. Many thanks! Toward the end of Interlude-6 when Szeth finds Gavashaw dead along with his [former] master Makkek, he's greeted by this dark figure who bears Szeth's Oathstone and gives him Taravangian's kill list. I'd like to discuss who this dark figure might be... Because I don't believe he's just some unimportant messenger. Szeth doesn't recognize this man's accent. This seems to be a gentle suggestion that the figure might originate off world. I figure Szeth would have traveled many places since becoming Truthless and having his Oathstone traded so frequently. Szeth guesses that the dark figure's accent might be Alethi, but he isn't sure. No real description of the dark figure is really given except that his voice is "male and deep" so a physical match can't really be made. The figure even wore a mask. So all we can really go on and take clues from is the shrouded man's words. Monologuing - This shrouded figure is heavily opinionated for someone who is presumably unimportant and needs to only deliver proof of the Oathstone exchanging hands and the new orders from the new master. That being said, what the man starts monologuing about is, i feel, key to discovering his true identity. He says things like: "Are you satisfied with this... are you satisfied with trivial crimes?" "What a waste... You are squandered." "You are a work of art... a god." “But do you not rebel against this frivolous use of your skills? Were you not meant for greatness?” "It's time you stop wasting your talent." Very interesting statements. He had virtually no reason to monologue to Szeth... and combining that with his strange accent, I keep feeling like this shrouded figure is more important that the interlude makes apparent. He shows up nowhere else in the series (as of yet) to pick apart more clues. These statements come dangerously close to many things said to Waxillium Ladrian back on Scadrial. My vote is that the masked and shadowed man giving Szeth his new orders is Miles "Hundredlives" Dagouter who is now on Roshar. As implausible as it seems, he may not actually be truly dead. It was never explained how he was still able to heal after all of his metalminds were apparently removed. Therefore we don't know to what extent his death was an act or irreversible (including his missing pulse). We know nothing of the remains/body of Mile Dagouter. Beyond that, the cosmere has "Returned" and fabrials that can revive people from the unthinkable (like with a certain someone at the end of WoR). Miles Dagouter is my best guess as to who this man might be... he doesn't actually have to have survived his experienced on Scadrial to be alive on Roshar right now. He's Miles Hundredlives Dagouter... he's been through a lot worse. He probably had gold implanted in his bones. He was very confident when he went up for execution. Why would he have been so confident if he knew he'd eventually run out of gold during the execution and die anyway? As for what he'd be doing on Roshar? Probably doing the same thing he was doing on Scadial. Serving someone, believing in a higher cause. Like Taravangian. Thoughts?
  7. Hi all, I was rereading The Alloy of Law prior to Shadows of Self, and I noticed something interesting (at least I found it interesting). During a conversation between Miles and Mister Suit (Ch. 15) they talk about the following: Suit snorted. “And it’s said that the Roughs are the place where honor goes to be murdered.” “It’s the place honor goes to be strung up, flayed within an inch of its life, then cut down and left in a desert. If it survives something like that, it’ll be stronger than hell. Certainly stronger than anything you have at your Elendel dinner parties.” Kaladin being a child of Tanavast/Honor, was strung up to be flayed by the storm, cut down by bridge 4, and became stronger from it (e.g., Teft noticing Kaladin feeding upon the light, which set Kaladin down the path). The desert could be referencing the shattered plains due to the high storms. Do you think this was a coincidence or a nod from Brandon to those who follow the Cosmere?
  8. I haven't dove too deep into the Cosmere (I am going to finish the books this summer), but I feel like the darksphere was more part of the Stormlight more than the expanded Cosemere. It seemed to be a negative form of Stormlight. Is it possible that it has something to do with Odium's power? If I'm missing something super obvious, please let me know so I can no longer feel as a fool. Quotes regarding the sphere... "Szeth hesitated, then knelt down and took the sphere. It was odd, unlike any he'd seen before. Though it was completely dark, it seemed to glow somehow. With a light that seemed to be black." (WoK Prologue: To Kill) "That tale always discomforted Szeth, as it reminded him of the strange black sphere Gavilar had given him. He'd hidden that carefully away in Jah Kaved." (WoK Interlude 3: The Glory of Ignorance)
  9. What would happen if the characters from the Stormlight Archive existed in our universe at our time period. if they did then what social media would they use. Lift would definitely use Tumblr, probably as a fandom or comedy blogger and her blog would certainly be food orientated. Wit i think would use twitter. his entire existence on the internet would be to insult people in short tweets Shallan would use DeviantArt no more to say about that! I feel Adolin, Kaladin and Danilar would be competing Youtubers (i'd subscribe to them!) How about the other characters, what would they use?
  10. I personally liked WoR more because it had more comedy and seemed a little more...RADIANT! Anyway, I especially like the part where Szeth meets his spren Nightblood and becomes a Skybreaker. That part was really intriguing.
  11. Hello everyone, I'm new. No, my name isn't new, but you may know me as Szeth-Son-Neturo. So, now to the discussion... I prefer Willshapers, based off of their power descriptions. Wouldn't it be awesome to pass through objects and teleport? They can change the molecular physics of things with their minds and Elsecall. That seems pretty boss to me. What are your guys' favorite types of Knights Radiant? I'll probably end up relocating this soon...
  12. Hi everyone, this ir my first post and I´m not a native english speaker so please be patient! I was just rereading WoK´s last chapter, In the top room. For those who not remember, is the one in which Dalinar learns the Almighty is dead. This specific quote caught my attention: There´s also another reference, in one of the epigraphs: What is a Dawnshard??? What does it mean to "bind any creature"? And why is it so important? This is killing me, please tell me what you think
  13. Stormtroopers have never been able to hit anything. Why is that? All their targets are Windrunners, of course! And lightsabers? Cleverly designed Shardblades, polished with laser block polish. If you have any Cosmere/BrandonSanderson Theories for Star Wars, post 'em here.
  14. So you know those three diamond shapes that appear between paragraphs sometimes(the symbol of the Ghostbloods)? And the endnotes that seem to be written by Ghostbloods hence (from The Way of Kings) "Joshor, Head of His Majesty's Silent Gatherers, Tanatanev, 1173." His majesty being Taravangian. Just a thought. Not actually sure if there's enough evidence (or even if this stuff is correct, seeing as they could be false conclusions and I have actually finished WoR ). Edit: *Please reply if you have anything that contradicts or supports this theory. Thank you.
  15. Recently, after thinking about the lyrics of the Christmas song "Jingle Bells" I payed specific attention to one line: "Oh what fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!" And so I thought, "Hey! SING A SLAYING SONG tonight! The Parshendi sing while they kill!" And so I sought the opportunity to make a parody of this classic Christmas song. Here was the result: Parhsendi Plateau Assault Written by ChullRider To the tune of "Jingle Bells" Sang by the Parshendi ---------- Dashing on Plateaus Preparing to slay O'er the Plains we go Killing all the way! Singing Creepily Making Spirits Grim What fun it is to run And sing a Slaying song to them! --Chorus-- O! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! Oh what fun it is to kill all of the Ale----THI! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! O, what fun it is to kill all the Alethi! ----------- And unlike "Jingle Bells," this one isn't festive, so you can sing it year-round! Happy caroling! ~ChullRider
  16. Adding on to my Chasm Duty scene I made a few days ago (which can be found here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/20625-lego-chasm-duty-scene-way-of-kings/ ), I've made an ardent and chull scene. Picture 1: General Overview of the scene. Picture 2: Directing rod (to use on chull's antennas), Ardent, and saddle, respectively. Picture 3: SIde view of the chull Picture 4: Is it a chull? Is it a boulder? That's all for now.
  17. Hello everyone. This is the scene from The Way of Kings when Kaladin and the rest of Bridge Four are on Chasm Duty for the first time. (At least, the first time we hear about it.) It's inspired by the book, of course, and the LEGO scenes from The Stormlight Archive made by Rick Martin. They don't NEARLY go as far as his do, but I would probably do better with more pieces. Picture 1. The overview of the scene. Picture 2. Teft and Kaladin, respectively. Picture 3. The weapons in the pile shown in picture 1, being a Grandbow, Alethi Spear, Parshendi Sword, Parshendi Axe, and Crossbow. Picture 4. Kaladin, with Teft, makes a discovery that Parshendi grow armor. Strange stuff. Picture 5. Kaladin demonstrates an extraordinary kata form as Teft witnesses it in the light hailing from the torch. That's all for the Chasm Duty Scene. I will post more WoK pictures soon.
  18. Please Note: The following is all speculation, and not necessarily correct. I could not help noticing that a number of people with the same surges seemed to have similar personalities. I'm not sure whether this has been discussed before, but here is my theory. Orders with a type of Surge in it will be attracted to a kind of personality. I have a few examples. Windrunners/ Skybreakers: Shared Surge = Gravitation Both the Windrunners and the Skybreakers seem to feel the need to uphold what they believe to be right. In the Windrunners case, it is their own personal ethics, while in the Skybreakers case, it is the law they attempt to uphold. This could be why their is anger between them, as when their beliefs conflict, both sides will feel the need to uphold their own belief. Lightweavers and Elsecallers: Shared Surge = Soulcasting Shallan Davar and Jasnah Kholin both have a keen interest in the scholarly arts. This is probably just due to a co-incedence, but what if the spren associated with Soulcasting are attracted to scholarly figures in the same way creationspren are attracted to Shallan when she creates an artwork?
  19. I edited the U to the I, but I am not sure what you mean by some of the other changes. Is this correct?
  20. In the thread, The Most Useless Uses for Useful Powers, We had a Conversation about splitting someone in Half using the Surge of Gravitation. I didn't post this, But I though, that I could easily escape a Windrunner or Skybreaker Storing or Tapping Weight to Counteract the Gravity. Then I started wondering if that was possible. The Powers according to the Coppermind Wiki: So the Windrunner can increase or change the Gravity of a person, making them heavier or Lighter. Kaladin did this to himself in the duel in the Arena Lashing himself several times to another Duelist, effectively falling with Incredible weight onto the man. So, if Kaladin were to Lash Sazed Downwards a couple hundred times, could Sazed Store this 'Weight' in his Ironmind?
  21. Hey everyone, With Words of Radiance having been out for six a number of months now, we've merged the spoiler board into this one. Sorry that it took us a little longer than we anticipated to get this merged together, things have been crazy for all of us. What this means for you is that you can now post all discussions about the series right here in this board. If you haven't yet read book two, be aware that there will be spoilers here, so proceed at your own risk. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me a PM. -Rubix
  22. I am sure that a thread like this has been explored but seeing as I could not readily find it have have come to ask it myself. If you came the the Nightwatcher, what would you ask of her? Even better, what do you think would be what you would get? I would ask to know all the RAFO. I would then end up dumb and paralyzed so I could not share the secrets with anyone. ( /(Well Written Brandon.... well written)
  23. Welcome to the umpteenth Hurt'n'Heal game on the 17th Shard! Rules are simple and anyone can play: On your turn: Hurt one person for two health points or hurt two people for one HP each. Always highlight whomever you're hurting in red. Heal one person for one HP. Highlight this person in green. You cannot hurt and heal the same person in one turn. You must hurt and heal on your turn; don't just do one or the other. Anyone who reaches 20 HP becomes immune and is highlighted purple. You cannot hurt this person until the second round, which starts when there is only one non-immune person on the board (that person's HP is automatically raised to 20 and kept on the roster). The second round's HP cap is 30, and no one can become immune when it starts. A brief description of the players for this round if you can't remember all of the worldbuilding that Brandon did. I tried to keep it non-spoilery... ish. Ishik - The Purelaker who talks to the weird foreigners Rysn - The merchant apprentice who has to take care of "comatose grass" Ym - The shoemaker who believes in the One and heals orphans Nan Balat - Shallan's brother who tears apart crabs Axies - An Aimian who gets drunk, studies spren, and takes notes on his body Baxil - A man in the hire of a lady who goes around destroying statues Geranid - A hermit ardent who cooks food and studies spren with his wife Taln - The crazy guy who has RAFO written all over him, Stonesinew?!?!?!? Lift - The proto-Edgedancer who steals food in order to be awesome and bosses around a vine Zahel - A lonely ardent who uses strange metaphors and turns of phrase involving color Eshonai - A Listener Shardbearer, who tries to lead her people to survival Szeth - The Assasin in White, Truthless of Shinovar
  24. Hey, when I reread WoK two months or so ago, I thought it would be fun to do a 3d-model of one of the creatures of Shallan's sketchbook. I ended up doing the Axehound, which was my favorite. When I did some research in the internet I found @DomainWalker 's Thread about exactly the same topic it was kinda funny There I found some design tips from @Inkthinker which were really useful. Thanks for that! I really like how the project turned out and would be interested to know what you folks think of it.
  25. The Tranquiline Halls are the place in mythology that humans were cast out of, to be sent to Roshar by the Voidbringers. According to Vorin mythology, the Voidbringers aimed to cast mankind into Damnation (Braize, one of the other two worlds in the Greater Roshar system), except humans went to Roshar instead. Now the Voidbringers are trying to 'finish the job'. Ashyn is the other world in the greater Roshar system, besides Roshar and Braize. It stands to reason that is Damnation is real, then the Tranquiline Halls would be real too. And where would it be if it weren't for Ashyn. Ashyn does sound like a place the Tranquiline Halls would be. The magic system in the Silence Divine (set on Ashyn) is one where people with disabilities get powers. If any place could be considered a 'perfect' place, it would be there. Also, it is known that Cultivation and Honor moved to Roshar from somewhere else. Is it possible that they moved to Roshar from Ashyn when humans were 'cast out'. Once again, this is all speculation, and not confirmed.
