  1. So I drew this at the end of last semester in my drawing class. I basically used it as an excuse to use every medium I had available to me. There's pencil, pen, colored pencil, watercolor, and even some sidewalk chalk in there.
  2. Hey guys, So re-read WoR for like, the fifth time today... and I was wondering about Moelach and spren in general. Moelach sounds like a spren that makes people see the future, right? So the same way the stormfather is Syl's father, could Moelach be the parent spren to a truthwatcher, like Glys? Also, I have a general question about parent spren..... it sounds like the more powerful spren establish nahel bonds with bondsmiths only.... is that right? Also, since spren are from the cognitive realm, I'm guessing they are just ideas given form by the humans living on Roshar.... I got that idea from that interlude chapter where they measure spren characteristics, and found that spren can be defined indirectly, after the measurements were stored. So can one argue that the more powerful an idea, the more powerful the spren? Something like the stormfather is what pretty much every human on Roshar visualises highstorms as.... so is my rationale behind spren right? Hence, can one argue that spren can be destroyed when the idea created, like Syl for Honor, is discarded? Is that what happened in the recreance? maybe some spren ('wicked thing of eminence) related to Odium convinced the Knights to abandon their ideals, 'killing' their spren, so to speak? I'm sorry if my questions are all over the place
  3. Hey, 17th Shard! It's been a while since I've actually logged in on here and done stuff (I've been lurking for a while, again), but I have something I think you guys will appreciate. I am working on a game based in the prologue of the Way of Kings (the Szeth part). You are Szeth. You have been instructed to kill King Gavilar on the night of his treaty with your masters, the Parshendi. You will wield Surgebindings and a Shardblade as you fight through the palace corridors to hunt down your prey. A friend and I have figured out how to program some of the Surgebinding powers already, we just need to work on refining them a bit. We also made it so that controls will switch depending on which wall/ceiling you're on, so that you can run around like normal while there (if you don't do this your controls will get really messed up when you go from the floor to the wall, or vice versa). I know how to code first person better, but I'm thinking I'm going to learn how to code a third person game, because it's a lot better for the gravity switching and other shenanigans that happen on screen. Anyways, here's some of the artwork I've been working on for the game! Some of this I've already started modelling. Firestorm (Gavilar's sword) is going to be flipped and copied in photoshop so that it's symmetrical, that's why I only drew half of it here. It's based off of the illustration in Words of Radiance of Shallan's drawings of the Kholin Shardblades. Jezrien's blade is based off of the cover art of Words of Radiance (I think it's straight in the book, but I can't find enough descriptions of it to make it look distinctive. Plus the cover art version just looks really cool. ). The other stuff is based off of a few descriptions in the books + my limited knowledge of medieval era weapons. I want a second opinion on one thing, though. Part of me feels like Alethi bows would be like composite bows, because of the amount of shell/horn material around and the relative scarcity of wood because of Highstorms. Another part of me, however, feels like because of the Alethi soulcasters supplying plenty of wood that they would just use bows similar to European longbows.
  4. “Three of sixteen ruled, but now the Broken One reigns.” I have been rereading Way of Kings after finishing a Reread of the Mistborn trilogy, Elantris, and Warbreaker and noticed something about this sentence. Are we sure this is referring to Odium? The Broken One could also depending on the language refer to the Shattered one, A shattered shard. And the storm father up until the everstrom was created was more or less the subject of almost all worship on Roshar that we have seen/ know of. Could the Disillusion of the Oath packed by all but one heralded and the surrender of the Knights Radiant actually have strengthen or changed something on Roshar to the point where the Stormfather was stronger than cultivation and Odium? We know from the letter that Rayes is actually comfortable with the power and nature of Odium so the argument could be made that he as a person is broken, but Odium it self is not fractured. Making the title of Broken one not fit him. In addition he is not on Roshar. His Presence is felt but the shard it self is on Braize. The Stormfather as the shattered remnants of Tanavast/Honor and currently the primary/only god of several different kingdoms on Roshar makes more sense for this Epigraph to be the one being referred to and, If this theory is correct, Raises some interesting questions of what is happening to cultivation right now. To really get an Idea of that I would love to get some more concreet quotes on what the eastern peoples of Roshar who do worship cultivation have to say on there godess.
  5. Please Note: The following is all speculation, and not necessarily correct. I could not help noticing that a number of people with the same surges seemed to have similar personalities. I'm not sure whether this has been discussed before, but here is my theory. Orders with a type of Surge in it will be attracted to a kind of personality. I have a few examples. Windrunners/ Skybreakers: Shared Surge = Gravitation Both the Windrunners and the Skybreakers seem to feel the need to uphold what they believe to be right. In the Windrunners case, it is their own personal ethics, while in the Skybreakers case, it is the law they attempt to uphold. This could be why their is anger between them, as when their beliefs conflict, both sides will feel the need to uphold their own belief. Lightweavers and Elsecallers: Shared Surge = Soulcasting Shallan Davar and Jasnah Kholin both have a keen interest in the scholarly arts. This is probably just due to a co-incedence, but what if the spren associated with Soulcasting are attracted to scholarly figures in the same way creationspren are attracted to Shallan when she creates an artwork?
  6. I edited the U to the I, but I am not sure what you mean by some of the other changes. Is this correct?
  7. I have been reading through the cosmere books and in each one there is at least one world hopper, SPOILER AHEAD, HIGHLIGHT TO READ [There are around five in words of Radiance] Through research and help from friends I have learned that almost all world hoppers are from other cosmere books. There is at least one person from each world that can world hop so that leads me to believe that it is possible with each magic system. I think it has something to do with traveling through Shadesmar. What are your thoughts on the subject?
  8. I have a theory. Surprise! Okay, not a surprise. Lots of people have theories. I'm just surprised I came up with one. Never mind, here's my theory. The Truthless, in Interludes 1-4 RYSN, page 436 look at this text right here. Actually, how do I put in text from the book? Do I copy it over? Anyway, I'll figure that out later. The key from the book is that Thresh, the Shin trader mentions that he sold Vstim, the trader, a Truthless. Seven years ago, apparently around the same time Szeth went into service. AM I RIGHT? CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THIS? AM I RIGHT?
  9. Okay, so I was reading Warbreaker, and I come to chapter 32. Hoid shows up and starts telling stories about the history of Hallandren: http://brandonsanderson.com/warbreaker-chapter-thirty-two/ He brings up a guy from a really long time ago named Kalad: Is there a possible connection here? On the back of The Way of Kings paperback cover it says regarding the "four whom we watch" that "One of them will destroy us" implying that one of them could turn evil or something. We know that it's possible for people to planet hop (Hoid, of course, but also Galladon from Elantris is in the Way of Kings interlude about Ishikk), and it's possible that Warbreaker takes place in a much later time than the Way of Kings. Also, this Kalad is a "Returned" which bears some resemblance to the fact that What do you all think? Is this just coincidence?
  10. Hey, when I reread WoK two months or so ago, I thought it would be fun to do a 3d-model of one of the creatures of Shallan's sketchbook. I ended up doing the Axehound, which was my favorite. When I did some research in the internet I found @DomainWalker 's Thread about exactly the same topic it was kinda funny There I found some design tips from @Inkthinker which were really useful. Thanks for that! I really like how the project turned out and would be interested to know what you folks think of it.
  11. The Tranquiline Halls are the place in mythology that humans were cast out of, to be sent to Roshar by the Voidbringers. According to Vorin mythology, the Voidbringers aimed to cast mankind into Damnation (Braize, one of the other two worlds in the Greater Roshar system), except humans went to Roshar instead. Now the Voidbringers are trying to 'finish the job'. Ashyn is the other world in the greater Roshar system, besides Roshar and Braize. It stands to reason that is Damnation is real, then the Tranquiline Halls would be real too. And where would it be if it weren't for Ashyn. Ashyn does sound like a place the Tranquiline Halls would be. The magic system in the Silence Divine (set on Ashyn) is one where people with disabilities get powers. If any place could be considered a 'perfect' place, it would be there. Also, it is known that Cultivation and Honor moved to Roshar from somewhere else. Is it possible that they moved to Roshar from Ashyn when humans were 'cast out'. Once again, this is all speculation, and not confirmed.
  12. Strong & beautiful Princess Jasnah Kholin - statuesque, always dressed immaculately, discriminating violet eyes. Love this woman!

  13. Here is my interpretation of Shallan, as I see her in The Way of Kings. While Shallan has some very dark sides to her personality (and past), which even show through in the first book, she is very good at hiding those – and I also think that a certain amount of cheerfulness is part of her as well. This is the side I wanted to portray here, the joy she feels when studying, observing, researching.

  14. My Shallan character design. This is Shallan from early Way of Kings, before she get the power and confidence of Words of Radiance Shallan.
  15. Sooooooo I'm bored and..... well I want to make a list of creative spren. I KNOW ITS ALREADY BEEN DONE 1) glass spren, little humanoid spren that appear as fog on glass. can only exist on glass but can move between unconnected pieces of it. 2) tech spren, I just want something to blame when my computer doesn't work ok 3) band spren, I know that music spren already exist but these are different. They form the figure\s of the band or person who sang or played the song and play along. The more you like the band the stronger that spren are and can enhance the music 4) night spren, I think these already exist but they are basically shadows in human form that exist when a person feels uncomfortable with a dark situation. 5) enthusiasm spren, little figures that jump up and down when what ever brought them into existence is overly exited. Misty prevalent when reading my posts or meeting your favourite authors. That's five for now, make your own list. if there's a spren in every thing I'm sure you can think of some creative ones. Yours- a spren obsessed rain spren
  16. (Not sure if this should go under General Brandon Discussion). So Brandon's supporting the Altered Perceptions anthology being funded to help Robison Wells, and part of the anthology is around 5 chapters of WoK Prime when Kaladin makes a drastically different decision....and because the funding just hit a milestone, Brandon's released an excerpt of that on his website. NOTE: IT'S NOT CANON. It's an earlier draft. The characters are surprisingly similar, the main things that threw me off were the names (and wondering how Feather will react to a Renarin appearance ). So the Parshendi were Prallan, Adolin was Aredor, and there was something called the Thoughtgiver? I wonder if that's an earlier version of the Nightwatcher, which may fit with that theory that she affects people's perception/mental boons and curses. Interestingly as well, at this point Brandon had Renarin actively, yet hopelessly in battle. What do you guys think of it?
  17. A sketch by my sister. Really more of an enraged hermit crab than a chasmfiend, but who am I to judge.
  18. I am currently re-reading The Way of Kings, allowing myself to fall back into the story while simultaneously allowing my demented mind to make tenuous connections to everything else in the Cosmere. One small, tiny little detail caught the eye of the more illogical part of my self. This detail can be found in a Shallan chapter, specifically, when she finds a book of fairy tales about Voidbringers. The first story is apparently about this: There is a very strong likelihood that this is a fable. Only this and nothing more. But there are two parts of me that love this passage--the part that makes tenuous connections and the part that loves the Cosmere. For to me, this passage almost sounds like a reference to Awakening. The boy whittles a piece of wood into human shape, and then sends it over a lake to distract the Voidbringers. Could it be an eyewitness-account of Awakening, distorted by thousands of years worth of retelling? As others have astutely pointed out, the curse "Kelek's breath" is quite prominent on Roshar. Were there men with great stores of Breaths, capable of Awakening, during the Desolations? As a side-note, the title of the fairytale book is Shadows Remembered, which would be a great title for a Stormlight installment if Brandon Sanderson sticks to the Archive theme.
  19. This is my first post, so I'm going to have to ask you to stick with me here. Honor, aka the Almighty, as we all know, is dead, splintered by Odium. My first thought was 'Oh, then the Spren must be his splinters.' WRONG. The spren have been around during the time of the Almighty, as shown by one point in the book (possibly a Words of Radiance spoiler) This says that Surgebinders existed during the time the Almighty was alive, and thus so did the spren (Nahel Bond). However, that does not mean the Spren are not -of- the Allmighty. I believe that all spren are a form of the Almighty's investiture in the world, as they seem to have all -bonded- with specific emotions/elements/abilities. WoR spoiler Now, second part of this theory. If the spren are all from Honor, what does that leave Cultivation? Well, that leaves him with Shinovar. Think about it. Unlike what Ruin and Preservation did, fighting for power, Honor and Cultivation decided to split up the land, they made a deal of sorts. Honor would get the land and shape it any way he wanted so long as it didn't mess with Cultivation's area. Thus the mountains around Shinovar so that Cultivation's land wasn't effected by the Highstorms. This would explain many things. First of all, it explains the lack of spren in Shinovar, since Honor has no sway there. Second, it would explain why the Shinese revere farmers and hate warriors, since warriors have to do with Honor, and farming has to do with Cultivation. Thirdly, it might explain the Shinese reverence of rock. The mountains that separate Shinovar from the rest of Roshar could be a holy symbol of their god's protection. Small side theory, I think Cultivation might actually be a man, since at the end of WoK, when Taravangian is talking to Szeth, he says, "Sometimes I wonder if the Lifebrother himself sent you to me." I know the Lifebrother is a nickname for one of the Heralds, and the Herald might have been an Edgedancer, which would explain Lifebrother, you know, growing plants and healing people could have to do with Life, but that is just a side theory. (thanks for the comments. I believe the Lifebrother might still be a Herald, though not Cultivation, and I do feel slightly stupid for posting this part.) WoR spoiler WoR spoiler Szeth's people, under the command of Cultivation, who I believe not only is still alive, but occasionally communicates with his/her people, gave Szeth a Shardblade as mentioned in the before quoted conversation with Taravangian. Not only does this mean Kaladin has the potential to be an immensely more powerful Windrunner but also gives an implication that the Nightwatcher is Cultivation. I say this because perhaps Szeth wished for the powers of a Radiant, and so got Windrunner powers, but in return for the great cost of being eternally enslaved, doomed to kill, and yet seemingly absolved of all sins he is forced to commit, for this is the price their god made him commit. Any thoughts?
  20. First off, much credit to vikorr! He is the person who set this off in my brain case. Second off, if this has been said before, then I'm sorry! And finally... the theory! Alright, ladies and gentlemen. The main of my theory lies on the principle that a spren bond has to do largely with your cognitive aspect. Which is not only decided by how you view yourself, but how others view you. In the Emperor's Soul, Shai tells us, It is important to know that when Shai describes the Cognitive Realm, she says that the way an object is viewed before she says and how it views itself. Which brings us to our next point. When Syl is talking about what Kaladin used to be, and why she followed him, she says, A large part of the reason that Syl joined with Kaladin was because that others saw him as upholding his honor. Even when he was a wretch, he still held some of that respect. Now, onto the recreance. There are two death rattles that are particularly significant: Emphasis on the love. In it's absence, the bond dissolves (which relies on the conjecture we get, finally, by moving onto Feverstone Keep). From <WoR Spoilers!> We know that many spren died in this event. They died because not only did the knights Radiant forsake their vows, the people of Feverstone Keep visibly saw it as a betrayal. They had thought of the Knights Radiant as enemies and traitors, and were prepared to fight for their lives. So... Tadaa! In culmination: A massive part of the nahel bond is having an honorable cognitive aspect, which is largely determined by how others view you.
  21. I haven't seen this theory in the forums, so I thought I would bring it up here. Way of Kings, Page 874 "'...I let Tien die, I failed my spearmen, the slaves I tried to rescue, Tarah...' He hadn't thought of her in some time. His failure with her had been different from the others, but a failure was nonetheless." Page 880 "What would have happened to him, if Tarah hadn't coaxed him out of his single-minded dedication? Would he have burned himself out, as she'd claimed?" So who is Tarah? Facts: - A woman from Kaladin's past who came into his life after he took up the spear. Likely after Tien died, because he wasn't dedicated until after that event. - Someone Kaladin failed, but in a different way than the others. Likely she isn't dead, because all the others died. - She helped Kaladin enjoy more in life than the spear. Kaladin's history with Laral shows he is attracted to women. Kaladin describes Tarah as coaxing him, which sounds like something someone would do with flirting. So if she didn't die, how would he have failed her? Could he have been engaged or even married to her and failed to fulfill his obligation because he was sold into slavery? Maybe Kaladin's heart is already taken.
  22. I know that we are all (obviously) obsessed with The Way of Kings and are crazy looking forward to WoR, but does anyone know how well the book actually did. It's stated on Wikipedia that it debuted #7 on the NYT Best Seller List which to me sounds like a success. I'm asking because I finally bought a Hardcover off of Amazon last month (after already having purchased a paperback to lend out to friends, a nook version and an audiobook off of Audible) and was shocked to see that I received a First Edition, First Printing! Did they just make a butt-load of books, has the book underperformed, did I luck out, or is there a totally rational explanation involving digital sales (with tons of good 1.99 pricing), a quick paperback publication and this being a first edition in a long series. Has anyone else bought a mint condition First Edition WoK recently?
  23. Hi all. Since I'm kind of new to the site, I'm not entirely sure if this has been brought up before. But has anyone else noticed how in the title pages for parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 in the Way of Kings, they have various Radiant Blades? And only ONE of these is the Windrunner. I'm not sure what the other ones are, but I think that one of them stands for Shallan's order, and the other one could show which order Dalinar or Adolin belongs to. Once again, I'm sorry if this has already been brought up.
  24. Hi! I exist!! Sorry if this is the wrong place for this by the way but yeah I have a theory pertaining to the mysterious visions dalinar receives from the almighty!!! And it's probably totally wrong and it's really quite baseless but here it goes. Now dalinar as we all know has a phrase that he uses an awful lot something like "blood of my fathers", now upon first look I thought nothing of it although upon my subsequent reread, before words of radiance arrives, I noticed that he happened to say it during a vision, the one where he is heb I think, and I just thought well maybe what he is experiencing is the memories and trials of his forefathers. That's pretty much it but yeah I was interested by it. The only other thing I can think to support the idea of dalinars visions being from his ancestors is that we know that blood is important, not only in this series but also in the other cosmere works. So yeah, that's it, thanks
