  1. Today, (02/02/2020) is a perfect holy palindrome. It made me wonder if there are palindromic days in the Vorin calendar also. Anyone know anything?
  2. My friend Michael made a one handed sign language alphabet for Women's Script!
  3. [This is the first New Topic I've ever created! ] I just found this recent BBC video on the resurgence of hanbok, a traditional Korean fashion: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20180321-korean-hanbok-the-comeback-of-a-600-year-old-garment At 1:54 the lady says that the sleeves of a "princess" robe are long so that the hands shouldn't show. Immediately reminded me of Vorin fashion!! ... but I bet Sanderson HAD to have it be only one sleeve in order for Shallan to be an artist. Hanbok is really beautiful! I saw a lady wearing "modern hanbok" at church a couple months ago - so elegant. I'm tempted to add a modern hanbok outfit to my own wardrobe, but I understand that the colors have meanings - I'd hate to choose something and find out later that it was offensive to someone actually from that culture. Tips from Korean members of our 17th Shard community are welcome!
  4. Ok so the idea I had would probably be best explained if I just showed you one. What is Adolin's favorite clothing company? Just find more palindromes and post them preferably question answer but not necessary.
  5. This is just a theory. It's probably too simple to be the whole story. But it makes sense, and I think it could be useful for (among other things) identifying Alethi characters in foreign lands, and creating Alethi OCs for fanfiction. In Writing Excuses, Brandon once mentioned a linguistic paradigm for "classical" Alethi names. He didn't describe it in detail, but he said it was invented to explain 'Dalinar,' which didn't really fit with the Vorin naming convention. He also said that 'Kaladin,' which he came up with by altering 'paladin,' conveniently fit this new classical paradigm. He also said this, in a 2014 interview: But there's a much simpler pattern in these names. And here it is: A simple alternation of Consonants (C) and vowels (V). (C) V C V C V C The initial consonant is in brackets because it's optional. It can be dropped, so names begin with a vowel. But the rest of the sequence doesn't change. No double vowels or double consonants. (Digraphs, like Th and Sh, count as one letter because they represent a single phoneme.) This holds true for the following Alethi names. Dalinar Adolin Renarin Gavilar Elhokar (assuming Lh is a digraph, the Alethi version of a double-L in English) Kaladin Meridas Amaram (coincidentally also a proper Vorin name) Aladar Arafik Avarak Avaran Alabet Lamaril Jakamav Kalishor Isasik Salinor Talanor Thanadal Tinalar Helaran (not Alethi, but close) Notice that all of these are men. This paradigm is only used for male names. As far as I can tell, all Alethi men have either Vorin names, or names in this pattern. (Vorin meaning palindromic, with one letter added, subtracted, or changed.) The only complication is Restares, whose name is neither Vorin nor classical. It violates my classical pattern because of the "ST" in the middle. But since Restares hasn't been confirmed as an Alethi, this may not be a problem. I'm wondering if anyone can see any additional patterns or rules that govern this system. Just for fun, I will now list some names from other Cosmere works that conveniently match this pattern. Galladon. Aredel. Luthadel. Aledin. Aradan (Yomen). Bevidon. Bavadin! Devanex. Dukaler. Galivan. Goradel. Heberen. Ishathon. Caberel. Nikolin. Arelon. Opelon. Duladel. Seraven. Enelan. And now some names from outside the Cosmere, to illustrate the general fantasy-friendly vibe of this paradigm: Saruman. Denethor. Boromir. Faramir. Azeroth. Suramar. Dalaran. Selidor. Eragon. (Po) Dameron. Caladan. Muradin. Mogenar. Telamon. Galadan. Malekith. Malacath. Akatosh. Zenithar. Kynareth. Erikur. (Obviously it also fits many not-so-fantastical names, like Cameron and Oliver. But let's leave reality out of this. Although Pokemon also fits.)

  7. Until now there was never mentioned a glyph meaning the Vorin faith as such. Some symbols are there - as the double-pupiled eye, that is known to be the ancient symbol of the Radiants, but still is considered a most holy image, despite the reputation of the Radiants. But it is not a glyph. Glyphs mean so much for the Vorin religion, prayers are written and ritualistically burned, glyphs are drawn for all kinds of protective mystic goals. How could it be, that there would be no widespread glyph for the Vorin main principle itself? What could the “Vorin” glyph be? Or since it’s not a sacred palindrome, as befits a meaning this symmetry-loving religion would of course try to apply to it’s self-identification, most likely the “Vorin” form is derivative from some more sacred root, like “vorov”, while the “-in” (or “-rin”) would be a suffix, so that the word “vorin” would mean “of the Vorov”. Or “of the Vov”. Or… if it’s like the Roman inscriptions, where ‘V’ stands often instead of ‘U’ too, could this glyph, in some another transcription (or in a different dialect) read probably “Uru”? My first guess about the possible meaning of the word „Vorin” was that it could be literally “Heraldic”. Because it’s the only known religion focused on the Heralds and claiming that it’s doctrine comes ultimately from the teachings of the Heralds. And aren’t usually religions describe themselves by the authority that gave them their teaching? However more than one Herald is referred with the (almost certainly) title “’elin” after their name, most significantly Talenel refers about himself as such “elin”, so most likely the word for “herald” is not “vorov” or “uru”, but exactly said “elin”. As the Vorin religion has a history of describing itself as pure against heresies, another possibility is for it, as some real-world religions, to name itself as the Genuine, or orthodox, or authentic faith, or some other synonym of that. What would be a most fetching synonym of this line for Roshar? What about the “Original” faith? Since it is supposed to be the teaching given by the Heralds, who for every Desolation had to take humankind from primitive state back to civilization, so there would be surely those who would claim, that no other doctrine could be more original, than the doctrine (supposedly) given by the Heralds. So the hypothesis: the word “vorin” meaning “of the Origin”. Interesting about the Origin, as it is most often referred, that it does represent not only the origin of the Highstorms, that bring the fertile rainwater and stormlight, but it’s coincidentally also the direction from where rises the other popular in mythologies symbol of Light and Fertility: the Sun comes from the same point the Highstorms come. I doubt the Vorin religion would fail to use this coincidence. One possible usage of the symbol of the Sun is the name chosen by the king Sunmaker, who brought down the Hierocracy and enforced the current canon of Vorinism. Sunmaker’s very difficult war against the Church was not anti-vorin, but Sunmaker promoted another, more true form of Vorinism. He needed a propaganda slogan against the priests. Obviously Sunmaker used the most often used in sacred wars for a reformation of a faith idea - that the bad church has corrupted the original form of the faith, and now it’s Sunmaker who brings the more original true form. So in his throne name he would likely chose something to proclaim his fight for the Original Faith. So now, in the Vorin kingdoms, where piety is so important in so many aspects of life, there must be widespread use of the symbols of this faith. Including the glyph for the faith itself. It must be very widespread. The most likely candidate for this glyph in my opinion is the famous Windrose. It has the royal place among the glyphs of the ten Alethi highprinces, even if it is quite unlikely to mean Alethkar as kingdom (else the king’s own glyph would be much more prominently associated with it). But Alethkar is a Vorin kingdom, and it takes the authority for the holiness of the current social order from Vorinism. So it makes lot of sense to place the Vorin symbol in the middle. In the depiction of Kharbranth we see the same “windrose” on the sail of one of the ships. Very much reminiscent of the big crosses on the sails of Columbus’ caravels. And what is more, on the same picture we have the same windrose depicted above the very top dome of the Conclave, like a rising sun. It’s exactly the place where the Highstorms are to come, because the lait of Kharbranth is oriented to give shelter against exactly this direction. Therefore it is the place the sun is to rise from too. To note here is that both of these images seem to be quite for the common public, and not some arcane and esoteric charts, so there should be nothing there uncommon or strange in the symbolics. Another interesting thing about the Origin, that it’s location is not so unambiguously certain as it could seem. Urithiru is said to be built where it’s built for the reason to be closer to the Origin. (By the way, could Urithiru be also named for being close to the Origin, literally “Origin-close city” or something?) And so it was built quite west of Alethkar. This means that for the more esoteric scholars the location of the Origin should be not just west of the continent, but otherwise. That must be the reason that the “windrose” could be placed on different locations on different maps. So on the map of Roshar by the Gavilar’s cartographer it is likely that the placement of the symbol will reflect some arcane knowledge from Gavilar himself, who had visions after all. The promiscuity of windroses of the Thaylen map IMO should mean most likely that they included for reference the different prime meridians, that might be in circulation in different lands. It’s like about the maps before 1884 in the realworld, when some maps were according to Greenwich, others according to Ferro meridian, or to Paris meridian, or to Antwerp meridian, so in few cases for surety there were references to more than one prime meridian.
  8. I have a theory and while I think it might be a little obvious I don't think it's been brought up directly on the forums. Here's the gist. The Vorin church over the past 4500 year has been run and structured for the main purpose of confusing and corrupting knowledge of the Knights Radiant, the Desolations, and the Voidbringers. I also believe that this was due to the influence of Odium as any long term effort to hurt the people of Rhosar's chances to survive the final desolation could potentially be accredited to the Odious one. Furthermore their takeover of the Silver Kingdoms during the Hierocracy preceding the intervention of the SunKing was not folly, but their masterstroke. They were able to destroy practically all books or resources containing any knowledge of the past (except the library of Karbranth of course). Lets take a look at what we know about the church and how it's very structure prohibits the spread of knowledge. Devotaries are the main way by which pious Vorin's show their faith. A Devotary has each devotee devote themselves to ONE noble aspect of the church. The male arts are brute and mostly involve fighting, since the church teaches that the greatest calling a man can fulfill is to be the greatest of warriors and to ascend to the Tranquiline Halls and reclaim them for man. This Devotion caused men to hold no interest in scholarship, lighteyed males had better rule a town/halmet/city/territory get to war or become and ardent, that is what is proper. They have no desire to read or gain knowledge of the past, reading is a shameful activity for a man, better to have a proper lady read to you. Even the amount of reading that Dalinar has pursued caused court gossip, thoough the fact that the book is the Way of Kings doesn't help. The female Devotary arts are mostly art (painting, music, poetry, embroidery) and scholarly pursuits, but a real lady should try to stick to the flowery ones since the most prominent scholars tend to become Heretics like Jasnah Kholin (I'm just riffing here some of this isn't explicitly said but are either implied or are the feelings I get from reading) {Also I don't agree with the sexist nature of this I'm just talking like an Alethi here). What they've done is separate those with Power (Men, Warlords, High Princes) from those with knowledge (Women, Scholars, Artists ) . Now I know a good light eyes couple will always be paired up, but even in this context the females are hiding knowledge in simple messages and texts with footnotes that men don't know about. And what men can read? Ardents can! And through this power they can have a greater influence on history. **Spoiler Spoiler ** The distinction between Vorinism and Old Vorinism is the reverence of the KR and the Heralds. They were venerated once and now are thought of as betrayers. Now the Recreance sure didn't help this, but a huge shift in trends like this needs some kind of push to get things going. Then it needs a stealthy hand to guide it on the right track. This is how Over the years, possibly without the entire churches overt knowledge, they could quietly secret away bits of lore and knowledge until we get to the current model of understanding about the past (not much that's accurate). Now if it is a smaller subset of the church driving this, it could be that during the Sunmaker's destruction of the Heirocracy, this piece of the church would need to completely break off to survive. They wouldn't disappear however they'd become ... The Ghostbloods. Do they have a secret library of old world knowledge? Is it the library of Karbranth? Tune in for WOR and hope we find out! I'm kind of running out of steam now so I'll come back later with some references and the like. But I think this is an interesting topic of pursuit and I hope it sparks some conversation.
