  1. EDIT #1: Event is over, you can find my write-up and recordings in this post. EDIT #2: Here's a [link] to the transcript. In case you've missed the news, Brandon will be in the Oak Brook Barnes & Noble on October 12. For quick reference, here's the snippet from his website: The important bit is that the event will have two parts (as is usual for Brandon's signings), each one with different admission rules. The first part (which will likely consist of a story, a Q&A, and a reading) is free and open to anyone and everyone, while the second part (the signing & personalization) requires a purchase of Shadows of Self on the spot. Which, I believe, is more than a little annoying, but their store, their rules (also, guess who is never preordering from B&N ever again). Come back to the Old Orchard Barnes & Noble, Brandon, they are nicer there! They are 10 minutes away from my house, not hour and a half... Anyway, I'll be there. I'll probably show up a little earlier (around 6, if I can), bother the personnel, and try to ambush Brandon if he makes the mistake of showing up early. For the event itself, I try to ask a non-spoilery Cosmere question during the general Q&A (you have me to thank for extracting the knowledge that unicorns do not exist in the Cosmere, thankyouverymuch), 2-3 juicy questions when it's my turn for signing & personalization, and a dozen or two after the event, if Brandon has time for 10 minutes of lightning Q&A. All of the events I've been to, he's been able to stay for a bit after and suffer my pestering, but there are no guarantees. So in this context, I'll be thinking about interesting questions in the next few days (feel free to post yours - obviously I can't promise I'll ask them for you, but if I like something I'll try to put it on my list). I'll also try to post a final list before the event, as well as an audio recording after. Kurk EDIT: Text of transcript as of 12/2016 for word-searching:
  2. TOR has released the dates and locations of Brandon's tour for Shadows of Self. I am saddened by the lack of love for east coast fans. I know I can't complain like all of the non-US fans, but after Philly was canceled this past winter during the Firefight tour, I was hoping he'd come back that way to make up for it! Anyways, here's the list of dates and locations for the tour. I hope many west coast Sharders can make it! Tuesday, October 6 BYU Bookstore – Midnight release! Provo, UT Tuesday, October 6 Tattered Cover Bookstore @ 6 PM Denver, CO Wednesday, October 7 Murder by the Book @ 6:30 PM Houston, TX Thursday, October 8 Mysterious Galaxy @ 6 PM San Diego, CA Friday, October 9 Borderlands @ 12 PM to 3 PM San Francisco, CA Friday, October 9 Kepler’s Books @ 7:30 PM Menlo Park, CA Saturday, October 10 Powell’s at Cedar Hills Crossing @ 7 PM Beaverton, OR Monday, October 12 Barnes & Noble @ 7 PM Oak Brook, IL Tuesday, October 13 Schuler Books @ 7 PM Lansing, MI Wednesday, October 14 Brookline Booksmith @ 6 PM Brookline, MA Friday, October 16 Manchester-Deansgate Waterstones @ 6 PM Manchester, England Saturday, October 17 London Piccadilly Waterstones @ 2 PM London, England Monday, October 19 Shaftesbury Ave. Forbidden Planet @ 7 PM London, England Tuesday, October 20 Sheffield Waterstones @ 1 PM (Note, I assume it's at the Orchard Square location...) 3. Has Brandon announced the Bands of Mourning tour and dates? I would really like to know. Thanks.
  4. I wanted to compile all the WoB from his signing Q&A's. Please feel free to add your signing questions to this thread or link to your thread and I'll try to keep this top post updated. I edited out non-WoR text to try and keep the length down, but I linked the original thread for those who want the full session. Also minor edits for spelling. 5. I got this crazy idea to create a scrapbook documenting the WOR tour for Brandon. I do a style of scrapbooking called Project Life and I think it would be awesome to create a book for him this tour. How it would work: I would provide the album and all the page protectors and we could have all the fans on tour stops fill out 3x4 inch cards with their thoughts for Brandon and maybe words of thanks for being the awesome writer that he is. The cards just slip into the pockets and we can also put photos/fanart in it. I will put decorative elements on the page related to the books too. Sample page: I think it would be really neat if on the first stop of the tour he started getting some of these cards filled out from fans. He probably won't know what to do with them. I will print photos and fan art to include in the book and I am creating ways to gather that content. Once he gets to Seattle we can give him the album for all those cards he has gathered already and with as many cards as possible already in it. At tour stops with 17th Sharders/people participating, they can print out cards or I will send cards to them and hand them out to fans to fill out to give to Brandon when they get their books signed. I can even make cards ahead of time to send in them in the mail if we coordinate this right. For those who can't make it to a tour stop but still want to be included, they can fill out a card, scan it and send it back to me and I will print it out and include it in the book. By the end of the tour, Brandon would have this scrapbook filled with thoughts and thanks from the fans. I have created a blog with a sample page, more on the idea and cards for download. Awesomeness Summoned was truly awesome and has already designed cards for people to fill out. I would also like to create a page with a collage of photos of people with their copies of WOR. Check out the blog and let me know if you would like to participate... Oh and if you could, please share this with other Brandon fans. Thanks!
  6. I have just over 2 hours of audio with people people getting their books signed & asking questions of Brandon. He was nice enough to let me leave my phone recording on his desk. It's about the only thing I managed to do right at the San Diego signing, after having to work late & arriving around 9pm (It started at 7). So it starts in the middle of people getting their books signed, and ends the very moment I'm about to talk to him, as that's when my phone's battery died. The store owner came outside to tell me it was saying low battery, and then let me go next as I had a lower number than the 50 or so that were still left (I wanted to be last so I could ask a bunch of questions without holding up people behind me, I only ended up asking 2 and didn't even get them recorded, though I thought it was still going). Anyway, I'd thought to transcribe the pertinent parts myself, but an apparently very fast reader totally spoiled a major thing for me about 20 minutes in and I had to stop listening to it. I saw from another thread you guys wanted the audio uploaded immediately to Soundcloud for this sort of thing (asking if people wanted to transcribe the questions, rather than wait for me to get around to it). That site limits you to 2 hours & my recording is longer than that. So I just uploaded it here instead. I'll still do it myself if no one gets to it by the time I finish WoR. Edit - The transcription is now complete thanks to Blackwood, who really stepped up. I didn't think it could possibly be done only 6 hours after my original post, but he did it! Here it is (Spoilers for Wor within): The San Diego Signing Transcript:

  9. It's May 14th (very early in the morning, but still), and you know what that means: it's Rithmatist day. But Eric, that isn't a cosmere book, so I'm totally not interested in it. Thank you, random viewer! Indeed, The Rithmatist is not a cosmere novel. If you're ever confused which books are cosmere and which aren't, just look if it contains Earth in it (for example, Alcatraz is not in the cosmere). The Rithmatist is set on Earth, but as you might expect, it's a little... different. And it's awesome. It isn't the United States, but the United Isles. It's steampunk. It has chalk monsters. It's fascinating alternate history. What do these seemingly unrelated things have in common? That they are expertly weaved together in this book. I won't spoil anything, but it's all the wondrous worldbuilding you expect from Brandon, with a phenomenal ending like you'd expect. Every Sharder should read this book, no question. You can read in this interview with The Book Smugglers some interesting historical elements, and why Brandon chose to write this book). Tor has a great article on Rithmatics here, comparing it to StarCraft. Yes, the magic is actually that cool. Not sold yet? You can read from the prologue to chapter 5 of the book on Tor.com. Okay okay I'll buy the freaking book already, you don't need to be a shill. Hey, it's okay being a shill if we're being a shill for someone else. Namely, Brandon. (But also, we just really, really like this book and don't want you to forget about it) As far as I can tell, you can buy the ebooks right now, at this very second. Here are a bunch of places where you can get the physical book and the ebook, for whatever platform you happen to choose: Amazon (and Kindle) Barnes and Noble (and Nook) iBooks Google Play Read the book already? Discuss it at our Rithmatist forum, and our spoilery thread of impressions. Additionally, you can use our handy Community Calendar to see when and where the events in The Rithmatist tour is. The events will appear in the sidebar on the forum's index page, too! And if you're going to a signing, why not post in the "Which signing will you be at" thread and meet up with some other awesome Sharders?
