  1. Hi! This is my musical recommendations thread!! Feel free to listen to and rant about these shows with me!!!! You can also ask for something in specific at any time. (e.g. "I want a musical with a really small cast and a cute romance." I might respond, "You should definitely check out Daddy Long Legs!") 1: Big Fish! Mostly focused on a father and son trying to repair their relationship, has a bit of romance and adventure. Top 2 songs: Daffodils and Be The Hero. 2: Pippin! The story is kinda weird, but the music is *chef's kiss.* You might have heard Corner of the Sky or Morning Glow, but my personal favorites are Love Song and Extraordinary. 3: Bandstand! About a group of men who returned from the way and made a band, hoping to win the bandstand competition. 4: Children of Eden! Somehow manages to draw similarities between Adam and Eve and Noah and his wife. An adorable show, probably not the most accurate religious material, but it is far from offensive in any way. 5: Anastasia! This musical is SO CUTE oh my freaking gosh I love it with my whole soul. If you liked the movie, you will LOVE the musical, even though it kind of gets rid of the magic evil guy. Oh, well. 6: Six! It's day six, so of course I had to. Six is about the six wives of Henry VIII, and it's pretty fun. Kind of an explicit content warning, but still a good show. 7: Once On This Island! Coming soon to Disney+! Give it a listen, give it a watch, you won't regret checking out this fun, mythological, magical show! (When did I become one of those advertising guys?!) 8: Aladdin! Also coming soon to Disney+! Yes, it is different from the movie. The best song that was added is "Proud of Your Boy," which is super sad and sweet and ahdifalejfjdgetjlk! 9: Come From Away! It's about 9/11, the 36 planes in flight during the attacks that were redirected to Newfoundland, Canada. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and get EPIC chills! 10: Secret Garden! If you've read the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, you know the cute story of this musical. Pair the book with some adorable, fun songs, and that's what you get from this musical! 11: For @Channelknight Fadran, because it is day 11, I will recommend his favorite musical, Hamilton. *sighs* This kind of causes me pain, as I was planning on mostly sticking to less-known shows, BUT I do recommend listening to/watching Hamilton if you haven't. Even if you don't normally like musicals, I really think you'd enjoy Hamilton. It's called a gateway musical for a reason, you know. I hate how popular it is, but I understand why it is so popular, and I really appreciate what it is doing to help give musical theater more attention. Plus, it's just a good show. A fun way to at least kind of understand a historical figure, even if it isn't 100% accurate, as well as a way to get new people into theater? Of course!!! We love adding new people to our cult group! I'll stop here. This is getting way too long. 12: You know 'em and ya love 'em! They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky, the Addams family! The songs in the musical are so fun! Wednesday is one of my dream roles, and it's just an extremely fun, silly yet serious show about trust and the importance of family! (Kind of... loosely? I'd say... yeah. Family. Definitely not just straight-up weirdness.) 13: The King and I! It is so cute! A Siam king brings an English woman to his kingdom to teach him English. They end up falling in love and it's so freaking adorable. That's it. Listen to it. Much cuteness!! 14: Ragtime! Cute, sad, etc. This musical is set in a time when Black people didn't have many rights. I haven't listened to much of it, but I do know that my favorite song from it, Your Daddy's Son, revolves around a black woman who was left by a man after he told her he loved her and got her pregnant. The baby, after he was born, reminded her of his father, causing her to hate him so much that she buried him alive. (it's ok, he lives.) 15: Music Man! Thanks for the idea, @Nathrangking! There's trouble in River City, and Harold Hill intends to fix it...by creating a boy's marching band! He accidentally falls in love on the way, and doesn't end up swindling the whole town as he planned. 16: My Fair Lady! Again, thanks @Nathrangking for the idea. I'm still mad about how long it took me to get that quote. My Fair Lady is an adorable show and it's just really cute and yeah. Listen to it!!!! It's really hard to explain the level of adorableness in words. Just listen to these shows!!! 17: Company! Again, pretty dang cute. It focuses a lot of the complexities of love, there's a full song about how falling in love is really freaking inconvenient sometimes, but in the end, it's worth it because "alone is alone, not alive" and falling in love helps you realize that you're alive and can feel these emotions!!! 18: Shrek! I feel like the musical gets a very underserved bad rep, it is actually a gorgeous show. I've been in it (kind of) twice. (The second time was a junior version, so it doesn't completely count.) The first time, I was just in the ensemble, but the second time, (the junior version) I was Donkey and it was SO MUCH FUN both times. For the junior version, I was really sad that they got rid of my two favorite songs, Don't Let Me Go (sung by Donkey, it's basically his main song, so I was really mad.), and Who I'd Be (mostly sung by Shrek and Fiona, though Donkey does have a cool part in that, too. It's a gorgeous, beautiful, perfect song so LISTEN TO SHREK!!!!!!!!) 19: Guys and Dolls! When you see a guy reach for stars in the sky, you can bet that he's doing it for some doll! When you spot a John waiting out in the rain, chances are he's insane as only a John can be for a Jane. When you meet a gent paying all kinds of rent for a flat that could flatten the Taj Mahal, call it sad, call it funny, but it's better than even money, that the guy's only doing it for some doll! It's really cute and silly and it's an older show, so the songs are super pretty! 20: Mamma Mia! It's day twenty, and Sophie is twenty, so why not? A super cute, fun, funny show, there is a small amount of warning warranted, but you'll all be fine to listen to it. Sophie's getting married, but she doesn't know who her dad is, and she wants him to walk her down the aisle. So, she invites all three of her potential fathers to the wedding, hoping to figure out which of them will give her away. (Thanks @Nathrangking) (just realized I put this one twice, so here's what I put the second time: Mamma Mia! Because someone thought it was a good idea to turn the songs of ABBA into a musical about a girl in Greece about to get married, wanting her dad to walk her down the aisle, but not knowing who her dad was. Turns out, they were right!) 21: Annie Get Your Gun! A young woman with a bunch of little siblings is a very good shot. She can shoot a sparrow with a bow and arrow! When she shoots a bird, it comes down with a single clean hole in the eye. A man comes to the town claiming to be the best shot they'll ever meet, and they have a shooting competition, which she wins. Oh, did I mention that she immediately falls in love with him, but he says something along the lines of, "The girl I marry will wear satin and smell nice." However, Annie gets the opportunity to spend more time with him, and he eventually returns her feelings, though they are still very competitive with each other. Some great songs include: Can't Get a Man With a Gun, Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better), I Got the Sun in the Morning, and There's No Business Like Show Business." (Thanks @Nathrangking) 22: Frozen! Yes, you know the story, yes, you know most of the songs, but there are a couple added songs that are just so incredible and adorable!!! (Try 'What Do You Know About Love' and 'Kristoff's Lullabye.') Anna in WDYKAL is literally me!! (There's a line that I very much relate with. Anna says, "Some people know their hearts the minute true love starts!" and then Kristoff says, "Some people read a lot of books." to which Anna replies, "I like books!" So, yeah. Me.) But in Kristoff's Lullabye, a kind of reprise of WDYKAL, Kristoff says, "What do I know about love? You're what I know about love." and it's just the cutest thing and chills and butterflies and lsjljfalghjkel I love it soo much!!!!!! 23: Sweeney Todd! Because why not? It's basically spooky season, right? This musical is pretty dang violent, gruesome, and disgusting. A man (Sweeney Todd) returns to London after a very long time, his daughter got sent to a mental asylum, a guy falls in love with her, and a woman who owns a meat pie shop falls in love with Sweeney. They end up killing a man, then decide to start killing people in Sweeney's barbershop, send them down a chute to the pie shop, then make pies out of humans. Fun, huh? 24: Little Shop of Horrors! A really cool plant convinces a really poor guy to start feeding it humans, which he does, starting with the abusive boyfriend of the girl this guy works with and has fallen in love with. The plant eventually basically takes over the world, so that's fun. Everyone you care about in that show gets eaten at some point. Enjoy!! 25: Daddy Long Legs! If you have been chatting with me for a long time and haven't heard me recommend this show, you must not be paying much attention. This show is the CUTEST thing EVER and I just really love it and lskfalafjsf it's impossible to describe how adorable it is. Just LISTEN TO IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!! 26: Tuck Everlasting! Basically just copy and paste what I said about Daddy Long Legs right here. The song Time brings tears to my eyes every FREAKING time!! If you haven't listened to it, you absolutely HAVE TO!!!!!!!!!!! 27: Groundhog Day! Maybe I should have waited until Groundhog Day to recommend this show, but....eh. I felt like recommending it now. If you've seen the movie, it's pretty similar, but it's a musical, so it's obviously much better! 28: Matilda! Most of you have probably read the book by Roald Dahl. The musical is very empowering and I just really really love it and am supremely sad that I am definitely too old to play Matilda. Maybe someday I can be Miss Honey! 29: Annie! Everyone's favorite curly red-haired orphan stars in this musical about love, hope, and friendship. It's really cute and yeah. Listen to it, watch it, etc! 30: Anything Goes! This show is HILARIOUS and my high school was going to do it fall of 2020 but corona and I'm sad because it got cancelled. Listen to it!! Delovely is adorable, Friendship is so funny, and all the songs are just phenomenal! 31: Into The Woods! Stephen Sondheim is a genius, and this is one of his most well-known musicals. I have been in it, and I played Florinda, one of Cinderella's stepsisters. Basically, he took the original Grimm Brother fairy tales and combined them into one story, linked together by a baker and his wife, who are trying to be able to have a child. 32: Phantom of the Opera! Andrew Lloyd Webber is also a genius, despite what my director says, and Phantom gives me chills. Every. Scudding. Time. Get me a guy who can sing All I Ask of You or Music of the Night and I will get over my obsession with Spook. That's a promise. 33: Newsies! Because why the crap not? If you haven't listened to/watched it...where have you been? Get on that right now. Do it. Or else. 34: West Side Story! Kind of a modern Romeo and Juliet story. So cute. Adorable. Tears coming out of my nose. Was that TMI? Sorry. Listen to it. Then you'll understand. 35: Thoroughly Modern Millie! With bobbed hair, a tasseled dress, and a new job, Millie is thoroughly modern. Hoping to woo her new boss, things are complicated when a sweet but impoverished guy named Jimmy proceeds to woo her. 36: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown! Everyone knows about Charlie Brown, but did you know that he has a musical? Now you do. Go listen to it. 37: She Loves Me! This one is really cute and kind of similar to Daddy Long Legs, and I just really love the song Where's My Shoe because she's going insane over a shoe and it's iconic. Go listen to this show, too. 38: Jekyll and Hyde! You all know this story, right? Well, the musical keeps the darkness and intensity and the coolness...but it's all done to MUSIC!!! And SINGING!!!!! So what's not to love? 39: Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief Musical! Yes, this exists, and yes, it is infinitely better than the movie. It stays true to the book and the songs are phenomenal. Listen to it!! 40: Hairspray! This musical shows that no matter what you look like, you can do whatever you want! (And find love along the way!) Super fun and inspirational!! 41: Bright Star! I know @revelryintheart already recommended this one, but I want it here, so there. The music is so good and so is the story!! Listen now or forever regret not listening to it!! 42: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Another Roald Dahl book-turned-musical! Super great, keeps all the original songs, but adds more and enhances the story with them!! 43: Mary Poppins! You've probably seen the movie, but, as always, the musical is infinitely better, so you should listen to all of the songs and watch it if at all possible. 44: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! A really great show, pretty biblically correct, and there's singing and dancing. Basically all a person could ever want!! 45: Alice By Heart! A girl and a boy during some horrible time, the boy gets tuberculosis, the girl sneaks into where he's quarantining to tell him their favorite story: Alice In Wonderland. However, the nurse rips the book. But the girl still knows the story by heart and they somehow get sucked into the story. The girl is Alice and the boy is the White Rabbit. That's all you need to know to start so NOW GO LISTEN TO IT ESPECIALLY BRILLIG BRAELIG AND ANOTHER ROOM IN YOUR HEAD. 46: Hunchback of Notre Dame!!!!!! @Tesh and I rant about this together ALL THE TIME and it is SO FREAKING GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 47: Count of Monte Cristo!!! It's very very very different from the book, so you kind of have to enjoy it separately, but it's still really good!!! My personal favorite song is Hell to Your Doorstep, but that might just be because, in the production I saw, they had LITERAL MASSIVE SPURTS OF FLAME AND ALSO FIREWORKS 48: Seussical!!!! It sounds like it'd be kinda dumb, but it's a fun mashup of a few Dr Seuss books, mostly Horton Hears a Who, but also All the Places You'll Go, McElliot's pool, and I think a few others. My favorite song is DEFINITELY Alone in the Universe. 48: Little Mermaid!!! Flounder is a dream role of mine that I probably won't ever get to play. It's the same story as the Disney movie, but it's got some great songs added. My personal favorite is She's In Love! 49: Little Women!!! Guys, this show is SO FREAKING GOOD!!!!!!!! I think it stays pretty true to the book, and the songs are so cool and fun and ajdksndkkdbfjkdd I love it!!! Favorite song: Some Things Are Meant to Be 50: Bare: a Pop Opera!!! Gay guys at a Christian school, one is out, the other is not and is very popular, so he's super reluctant to come out, but they're madly in love. Peter (the out one) convinces Jason (the other one) to try out for a Romeo and Juliet musical that their school is doing, and Jason gets the part of Romeo. And then....well, let's just say Romeo and Juliet acts as kind of a symbol for the story. It's a really really sad show but it's SO GOOD. There is some explicit stuff. My favorite song is probably Ever After. 51: The Scarlet Pimpernel!!! It's funny and there's romance and death and mystery and trickery and literally everything you could want from a show. Some of my favorite songs are Falcon in the Dive and Creation of Man. 52: In The Heights!!!! By Lin Manuel Miranda, there's now a movie of it, and it's REALLY good!! Some of my favorite songs are Sunrise and When The Sun Goes Down 53: Starry! It doesn't exist yet, but there's a concept recording and it's SO GOOD. It's about the Van Gogh brothers and yeah it's really really really good 54: The Clockmaker's Daughter! This one is so obscure that there's not even a Wikipedia page for it, guys. But it, again, is SO GOOD! It's about a clock robot girl and she falls in love but she isn't really free and when the townsfolk find out that she's a clock robot they want to destroy her. It's quite sad but also so so so so so so good. PLEASE LISTEN TO IT PRONTO IMMEDIATELY FIRST CHANCE YOU GET. It's also really nice to stim and bounce along with. 55: The Sound of Music! Kind of an old one, but SO, SO good and if for some reason you don't know it, go check it out! It's got lots of classic songs that I feel like a lot of people know, but maybe that's just me because this is my mom's FAVORITE show. 56: Hadestown! I saw the Broadway tour of this one live and OH MY GOSH CHILLS, TEARS, EDGE OF MY SEAT. It's a take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and it's told SO beautifully and the music is all so incredible. 57: Beetlejuice! The music, the characters, the humor in this are all absolutely amazing and SO catchy and SO fun to belt until you can't belt no more. Basically a demon tries to manipulate a depressed girl to bring him back to life. 59: Wicked! A reimagining of Glinda The Good and The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and honestly that whole story, from well before Dorothy arrives in Oz to when she melts the Wicked Witch of the West, it's so beautiful and heartwrenching and the music is incredible. 60: Spring Awakening! A super impactful show, but it definitely comes with a TON of content warnings and trigger warnings. Lots of swearing, movie-equivalent rating: R, sex, masturbation, suicide, death, abortion through very questionable means, SA, physical abuse...the list goes on, so tread lightly, but it really is an incredible show when it's done well. 61: Heathers! Another one that comes with trigger warnings: swearing, death, suicide, let me know if I'm missing any, but DANG the music goes hard. Very teenage-angsty but in a very violent way. 62: Tick Tick Boom! There's a Netflix adaptation! Starring Andrew Garfield!!!!!! Watch it!!!!!!! Or at the very least listen to the music, it's a very incredible autobiographical story about the playwright and lyricist of the show Rent. 63: Mean Girls! Kinda similar to Heathers, but the PG-13 version and much cuter and chickflick-esque (there is in fact a movie that would definitely be considered a chick flick but I have not seen it, don't come at me). The music is impeccable and all the songs make great go-to karaoke songs, just saying. 65: Urinetown! It's a privilege to pee, and if you pee where you're not supposed to without paying, you get sent to Urinetown. Where is Urinetown? Watch/listen to the show and you'll find out. (Yes it sounds gross but please bear with it, it's so good even though my parents don't agree). Some shows that I'm familiar with but not quite enough to write a paragraph about them right now but they're totally great and you should check them out (and I should become more familiar with them)! 1: Next to Normal 2: Bonnie and Clyde 3: Chicago 4: Rent 5: Falsettos 6: A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder 7: The Prom 8: The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical 9: Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 10: Spies Are Forever 11: Between The Lines 12: Something Rotten 13: Funny Girl 14: Ghost (especially the song With You) 15: Bridges of Madison County 16: Hair Other people's recommendations that I am very unfamiliar with so we should check them out together: 1: &Juliet 2: Bad Cinderella 3: Wonderland 4: I Could Use A Drink 5: Head Over Heels 6: Ride the Cyclone
