  1. So, I just finished Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, which I shall henceforth refer to as Silence, for short. Aside from being an excellent novella, and a thrilling story, I noticed some stuff. For example: Why silver? Silver has never done anything on any other planets. In fact, it's been quite useless on Scadrial. Another thing I noticed: People on Threnody have very basic names, sometimes names that seem incongruous and yet familiar to those of us here on Earth. What if, dear readers (and this is a very big if), what they call "silver" on Threnody would be referred to as "aluminum" or possibly "ralkalest" on other worlds? Also, Threnody seems to be the major contender for the ever-elusive Survival Shard's hiding place, and you can possibly see its effects on the peoples of that world.
  2. I was just reading Brandon's AMA over at r/books from 2 months ago. It was pretty far down so I don't know if others saw... But both Herdazians and Horneaters are the result of human-listener interbreeding. :/ So, apparently they had been 'discovered' long ago, not to mention that relations were probably quite quite good. So Rock+Rlain=fam forever.
  3. This is both a game and an intellectual exercise. This is for those of us who like speculative situations, well thought-through contingency plans, endeavoring to prevent the planet from being destroyed, and the occasional moral dilemma. Interested? Here's how I'm thinking this will work. One member will post a scenario. This scenario will hinge around a speculative element, either rooted in the realm of science fiction or from the realm of fantasy. The key is that the incident must be paranormal and potentially threatening towards society. Once the scenario has been established, other members will play the roles of the administrators of a global foundation dedicated to protecting the planet from the paranormal. They will accomplish this by... Investigating the scenario by asking the original poster questions; Determining what level of threat the scenario entails; And ultimately, by either taking action or allowing the situation to play out on its own. It will then be up to the person who devised the scenario to let the forum know whether their actions or lack thereof have saved or destroyed the world. Often nicknamed "The Worst That Could Happen Foundation" for their paranoia and detailed contingency plans, these administrators have access to military, scientific, and legal resources, with a global level of influence. With that said, their resources are not limitless, prohibiting them from nuking every paranormal event in sight or launching haunted objects into the sun. You can think of this either as a game or as an open forum for discussing hypothetical situations. I think this could be a lot of fun, simply as a way of flexing our creative and paranoid muscles. If there's any interest at all in this sort of game/mental exercise, I'll post an opening scenario for everyone to debate about. Once there's a group consensus about my straightforward situation (it'll probably be something simple that has to do with aliens), I'll pass the reins on to another member who wants to come up with a fiendishly world-threatening situation. Remember the key aspect of this game: you don't know everything about the scenario, and the worst thing that could happen probably will. So I'll reiterate... anyone interested?
  4. Well, who is back, you may be wondering. I've never seen this guy before. He's got zero posts! The nerve! I'm GONNA DOWNVOTE HIM SO HARD--before you do that, listen up. Here's the nitty gritty. I used to be the member known as Snoopy (link in my sig). For reasons that I don't feel like detailing here, I had to get a new account. Suffice it to say, I made a stupid mistake that involved deleting my email address...many accounts were lost that day...CHAOS, DON'T HIT ME WITH THE BANHAMMER PLEASE!! I PROMISE YOU THAT SNOOPY WON'T EVER BE ACTIVE AGAIN. All that said, what else is left? Ah yes, the work of finding all those threads I used to follow...except the Question threads; I ain't ever followin' those again (Read: 100 notifications a day). All my friends, I will find you! Winter, Brightness Random, Voidus, Mailliw, mail-mi, Kobold, Aonar, Winter, Arthur, Pifferdoo, leift, wilson, and all those I forgot, I AM COMING! I will likely be involved in SE a lot, RPing in Oregon, and of course, cosmere theories, the meat of this place. Anyhoo, I'm back, so come find me and let's talk. Why the name? Why not "Snoopy2"? Well, I feel like Kipper is a better name than Snoopy (or inexorablePanda) ever was. I FEEL this name. It starts with a "K," which is awesome. It sounds cool. It is cool. It also happens to rhyme with "chipper," which I also am. Maybe I should change it to "Khipper," hmmm. What do you Sharders think? See ya 'round! P.S. If you really need me to prove myself, just PM with me a question that Snoopy would know the answer too, like something in a PM that I would remember. P.P.S. Yes, Voidus, I'll take that cookie.
  5. Can any of you guys imagine Steelheart's Rending? We have seen him incinerate buildings with his energy beams. Clearly his Rending must have been destructive beyond belief. The news would have been choke full of the monster that caused so much destruction. Yet, when he arrived in the bank David and his father thought he was a hero. I can only think of two possible explanations. 1)The Charlston family never watched the news and didn't talk with people that watch the news. This would also explain how under Calamity's red light David didn't know about Dawnslight. 2)Steelheart was a ninja and no one noticed his Rending, because he was invisible. I have to admit that number one sounds more reasonable but number two is a clickbait sounds more awesome.
  6. From this WoB we learn that Shardblades differ from Honorblades in that Shardblades disappear while Honorblades don't. My thinking is that this happens because the power in the Honorblades isn't dead. The spren that were the main power of the Shardblades are dead, so when they are dropped they vanish. The power behind the Honorblades however, are still alive. The divestiture powering the special blades hasn't been broken or diminished yet. Honorblades, by this logic, could become very much like Shardblades eventually, given the right circumstances cutting off their powers.Thoughts?
  7. For the uninitiated, this is Argument Champion. It's a game in which you win arguments by connected good concepts with your side, and bad concepts with the other. And it is awesome. For those who have previously played it, or who played it just now after reading this, what do you think? Brilliant satire of modern politics, extremely fun game, or both? (Hint: Both.)
  8. Have Lirin and Hesina even tried to contact Kaladin after he joined the military? In his own PoV, I think it's implied that neither have for some time, perhaps never in his entire military career, but in his earliest flashbacks, it is obvious that they both loved him very much. In fact, before Kaladin and Tien were recruited, his mother basically told him that he didn't have to follow his father's path and choose another career if that's what made him happy. Sure, Kaladin may have disobeyed his father's wishes and disrupted his plans, but he is still as much their son as Tien is. No parent ever wants to see their kids die before them, not when your last conversation ended with bitter and angry words. So whatever the reason for their silence, Tien's death should be more than the incentive they needed to contact him, even if it's just to mourn his death together through letters. Unless they got real busy and popped out another one in the past five or six years, he is their last son. Plenty of men have joined the army and survived. He's also done very well for himself before the Amaram incident, youngest squadleader and all. There's no reason for them to completely ignore him as they did... ...Unless Tien's and Kaladin's recruitment into the military was not Roshone's final stroke. As weak as Roshone is, he is still a brightlord, a cousin to a Shardbearer. What little power he has, he can still use to inflict a lot of damage if he wanted to do so. And the loss of his only son could be the last push he needed to dish out the hurt. Kaladin have suffered so much, and it chills my bones just to think of it, but could something have happened to his parents that prevented them from something as simple as responding to their son's letters? And if so, what does this mean for Kaladin as a character? A part of me thinks that they're both alive and well, that Amaram decided to take it upon himself to protect/provide for them after the way he stabbed their son in the back, but this whole situation at Hearthstone stinks if you ask me.
  9. Greeting all, Just saying hello and letting you all know that I have changed my name to keep things fresh. Maybe I was inspired by the recent Ookla celebrations.. who knows. Anyway, henceforth I (MadRand) shall be know as The Count...... ah...ah...ah
