This is only sort of Sanderson fan fiction but I used Syl so it's going here. I basically went with the idea of Syl protecting Kal in the highstorm, and ran with it to Syl protecting people from their inner demons. And here's when I post something super personal and hope I'm not making a mistake with it all. Gotta be vulnerable sometimes :l @Pinnacle-Ferring I mentioned a draft one of this to you a while ago and you wanted to see it.

I don't know if this has ever been discussed, I can't find a thread about it. There's a scene in a chasm where Kaladin wonders whether he's the only one with a beginning Nahel bond. Syl says at some point: "I just ... I don't know what I know." but it's not quite clear whether she's thinking about Kaladin's original question at that moment. Then follows this scene, which makes me wonder every time I read it: What made Syl change for a moment? I cannot imagine this is meaningless or just a wrong impression on Kaladin's part. Yet, after several rereads, I've still found no possible explanation. My only idea is that maybe at that moment, she makes some connection to Shadesmar, retrieving knowledge she didn't have before, with the result that she now remembers she's not the only spren that has tried to bond. But that seems a little far fetched. Ideas? Or definite solutions I just haven't been able to find?

First of all, I apologize for talking about a lady's size. On topic, We have seen Syl assume a "normal" sized human form. We have also seen Syl act as various Shardweapons of differing size (from a knife to a spear to a 2-handed hammer) and even as a Shardshield during the fight with Szeth. Could Syl expand her "Shardform" to Kaladin's size and somehow coat him in armor. Note I am NOT talking about shardplate. I am talking about how Shardblades cannot be broken even by other Shardblades. If Syl took the form of some kind of clothing, or armor, and covered Kaladin head-to-toe in her "Shardform" would he be completely/nearly immune to damage? If she edged the clothing/armor around the hands could he cut through anything with a punch/chop?

View in full resolution for maximum effect, please. OPTIONS > VIEW ALL SIZES > LARGE Character reference sheet for the Kholins and friends. Now you see what a bore Dalinar is by forcing all the men to wear uniforms 24/7 24/5 when all the girls get to wear pretty dresses with jewels and braids. I originally thought the havah was an overly complicated, fussy dress but after drawing them multiple times in multiple designs I've come to like their elegance and visual sleekness. Super large res for people who like collecting images or inspecting details: And for those unrepentant self-indulgent people (sadly including me on occasion) who like this kind of stuff - ALTERNATE UNIVERSE EDITION!! Would AU Kaladin own the Bridge Four t-shirt and the slave brands beanie from the Sanderson store? Who knows. And now you see why Shallan thinks all Alethi are huge. The Kholins' average height is higher than the national average in my country. The more times I draw a character, the more they evolve as I get a firmer grasp of how the written description translates to a picture that evokes the character traits and impressions of their personality that stood out most to me. When a character doesn't have viewpoints then I have to rely on other characters' relationship with them, and the occasional physical description that only comes in a line at a time. Renarin and Navani are hard for me for this reason, Renarin especially since he just fades into the background. And I don't think there's even a description of Salinor's blade that Adolin won in a duel and gave to Renarin.

They say love means never having to say you're sorry. No apologies. BOOTS. They say diamonds are a girl's best friend, presumably because they give the best reading light. They, whomever "they" are, might also say that a girl's second best friend, the boring and reliable one who is always tasked with being party mum and giving the "he's no good for you" speech, is a good pair of sturdy boots. They also say an army marches on its stomach. They are wrong. FULL SIZE: ...and for all the people out there who prefer to bowl for the other team and wear their hearts on their sleeves rather than their socks, here you go: ...still no apologise.

Greetings and Salutations. I'm new to the forums (obviously), so this is my first post. Feel free to ignore this, I just needed to say it someone who would understand my vision, and my friends are not yet Followers of the great Sanderson... So I'm listening to Warbreaker, yet again, and was struck with inspiration for a GREAT kids' cartoon: Imagine Syl, Pattern and Nightblood (and their bond mates, as supporting characters) fighting to save Roshar from the Voidbringer-of-the-week. The magic! The prosaic good v evil conflict! The side-splitting deadpan commentary!!! I seriously think it would be a hit. On that note: Brandon, if Warbreaker 2 is AT ALL written from Nightblood's PoV, it would really make my decade. "Oh, alright. You can admire me a little bit longer, if you must."

Did some doodling late one night while I had the "Scroll of Stances" page from Words of Radiance open, and decided to scan it in and do something with it. Now I have a nifty new desktop background. :-D Drawing Shardplate used to intimidate me and now I think I have gotten more confident with it. I still prefer bigger, bulkier looking designs because it feels more dangerous and threatening - a Shardbearer jumping into a fight is described like being hit by a boulder. If you want the desktop bg version, send me a PM.

http://i.imgur.com/iOOo4zL.jpg I asked if there were any original names for characters we didn't know about, mentioning that Syl was my favorite. Originally, Syl was named "The East Wind".

I was re-reading WoR recently, and I was troubled by a question that popped up: namely, why did Syl "die" when she did? For those who haven't read it in a while, we are given to understand that Kaladin's uncertainty about what is right and wrong--as well as his involvement in the potential assassination of Elokhar--caused his bond with Syl to weaken. This led to his powers becoming intermittent, as well as Syl reverting to a non-bonded personality. However, the scene in which Syl actually "dies" is odd. It occurs when Kaladin is rushing to save Dalinar and prevent a disaster. He is PROTECTING. He is being a Radiant. So why is that the moment when his bond broke and Syl died? At first, I thought it was simply for dramatic presentation. By this point, Kaladin had already manifested his ability to fly, so dropping him off a cliff wasn't very dramatic--unless he was put in a position where he couldn't fly. However, later on, I think I discovered another answer. When Kaladin is in the process of "reviving" Syl while protecting Elokhar, he overhears an argument between Syl and the Stormfather. The Stormfather is attempting to forbid Syl from returning to Kaladin and Syl is screaming back at him and Syl says something important. She says something along the lines of "You cannot stop it if he says the words," implying, I believe, that he could stop the bond up to a certain point. Given this, as well as the comment the Stormfather says to Dalinar on the battlefield ("A daughter disobeys") and evidence that the Stormfather has sort of cracked in the head following the death of Tanavast, I believe that Syl's "death" was less due to Kaladin's uncertainty and more cause by the Stormfather actually breaking the bond at a moment he knew would likely result in Kaladin's death. Thoughts anyone? I might be reading too much into this, but the timing of it all really bothered me.

Hi there. Long time lurker, first time poster. Is there any concerns with a possible future showdown between Kaladin and Szeth where Nightblood consumes Investiture? Could Syl be at risk?

Well, let the community know your opinion! Which Spren do you like the best, and why? I personally am a big Pattern fan. I love his personality and thoughtfulness, and his ability to mimic anyone is quite nifty as well. Also, his questions about human behavior make for some pretty hilarious reactions from Shallan

If this is discussed elsewhere, just point me in the right direction, but I was wondering about what Syl said to Kaladin in Way of Kings. In chapter 2, "She bent down, looking at his hand from different angles, like a child expecting to find a hidden piece of candy. “What is it?” Her voice was like a whisper. “You can show me. I won’t tell anyone. Is it a treasure? Have you cut off a piece of the night’s cloak and tucked it away? Is it the heart of a beetle, so tiny yet powerful?” Any theroies on what these two expressions mean? I saw one person say the heart of a beetle might be like a tiny gemheart, but would that really be powerful? And what does the night's cloak mean? I haven't heard a single theory. Maybe someone could bring it up at a BS Q&A...
