  1. Think about it, Brandon has set himself up for a Vorin book series. The current sequence goes like this. WoK - WoR - O - RoW Book 5 would make it symmetrical!!! WoK - WoR - O - RoW - KoW It just makes sense!!!
  2. Is the “void” in “voidbringers” and “voidlight” just a fantastical stand in term for the “bad” or “hell” or something or is there actually a property of the “enemy” that makes the meaning of the term “void” particularly applicable? from Merriam-Webster online The only in-story property that immediately comes to mind that vaguely makes “void” relevant is the near ultraviolet nature of “voidlight,” making it maybe slightly analogous to an absence, or lack of light. My motivation for exploring this is that our expectations on just what “Voidbringers” means have already been violated twice, so maybe another shoe is bound to drop. Also the loose ties to ultraviolet light are just an unsatisfying reasoning for the term “voidbringer” to me. So either I’m missing some other, more valid reason for the term that explains what we already understand, it’s just not that important, or we are missing something fundamental that the term reveals about the true threat of the “void.” Some other mysteries that may tie in We still don’t know what was so scary that the old Knights Radiant perpetrated the Recreance We don’t know how the original Ashynites (Particularly Ishtar) ruined their own planet. Oh, or how they apparently heel-face turned (tvtropes link) and became the forces fighting the Void. More speculatively related, we don’t know what was rocking the original 16+ that they thought killing Aldonasium was the best option to deal with it. I bring that last up because I suspect the Dawnshards were related to all 3, and it makes the question possibly even broader. We have been contentedly identifying the “void” with Odium, and his not entirely understood motivations, but there may be a more significant big bad that’s been hiding right under our noses in the term “Void”
  3. Exactly what the title says: Would a sphere in a chasm charge during a highstorm? Thanks ya'll Sorry, I accidentally made three because it wouldn't load.
  4. I'm more of a writer than an artist, but drawing can be relaxing. I just think the swirls look cloudy or windy, and they were fun to draw.
  5. Just like the title asks, Who are the Envisagers? Teft mentions them when he discovers Kaladin is a Radient. Quote, "I need to tell the Envisagers ... The Envisagers were gone. Dead, because of what he'd done." So, Who are the Envisagers and what did Teft do to them? Thanks ya'll
  6. I was thinking last night about the significance of broken oaths and damaged bonds on Roshar, and how Adolin has helped with some of those on the back end. His relationship with Maya is the most obvious example, but I also think that his relationship with Gallant is similar. Dalinar's modes of action no longer have much use for a courageous Ryshadium and so Gallant ended up kind of abandoned in a paddock at Urithiru. Adolin recognized this and came to spend time with him, which I imagine was good for Gallant, and ultimately Gallant even allowed Adolin to ride him (something Ryshadium essentially never allow for anyone but their chosen rider). I think that this was underplayed in Rhythm of War. I don't think that Gallant was damaged in the same way as Maya, nor to the same degree. But we now have two examples of Adolin helping rare, strong-bonding beings not through the formal commitments those beings normally make but instead by dedicating himself, his time, energy, and compassion to them. And in turn he's getting things from them that, we've been told, simply don't happen-- a deadeye who can think, act, and speak, as well as a Ryshadium's respect and service (or at least assistance). In Cosmere terms these things really make me think of Devotion, though I know we don't have a lot of information on how she behaved before she was Splintered. Adolin is a devoted person: to his family, his friends, his duties, his swordsmanship, and probably other things as well. I don't think that Adolin is going to take up the Shard of Devotion, if only because that's already getting too common in the books and typically fails to resolve much. I doubt that very many long-running, inter-book plotlines are going to converge on that same outcome. And I don't want to get ahead of myself with specific predictions on matters about which we still lack basically all detail. But given that Devotion's Splintering (along with Dominion's) was reportedly an unusual type, and wound up with Devotion being crammed into the cognitive realm and its Vessel killed, I see some parallels. Radiant spren becoming deadeyes was (theoretically, once) irreparable, and yet Adolin has upended that through a method totally different than anything Honor might have promoted. Maybe something else broadly thought to be impossible, even for Shards, is in the works. The Splintering of Shards is going to be addressed at some point in future books, and what Adolin has been accomplishing has already started to rock Roshar. I think that his actions' significance will continue to be impressive, surprising, and important, and that his characterological alignment with Devotion, conceptually, is ultimately going to matter for that too. Does anyone here have any other thoughts, evidence, critiques, or anything else for discussion around the topic?
  7. Hello, 17th Shard! I have an idea. A very bad idea. I want to make MTG cards based on Stormlight. Unfortunately, I can't do art. If only there was a Sanderson forum website with a positive, supportive community and tons of awesome artists... Oh, wait. So yeah! I'll be using a website called Cardsmith to make the cards, and I need art. If you want to submit a piece, I will credit you with your username, or something else if prefer. I need art for: Most of the major characters. Random soldiers. Rosharan animals. Major moments in SA. I would be really thankful for art. This probably won't work, but it seems fun to try. And hey, Journey before Destination! Thank you so much, - NerdyAarakocra
  8. First, apologies if there's a better forum this could've gone into! With the Stormlight miniatures Kickstarter closing today, I'm wondering how many people here will be picking up this great hobby for the first time! Is there a desire/need for how-to information for beginners and things to watch out for? There's already a ton of information out there, but I'm more than happy to share what I know if it will be helpful to people. I've been painting minis off and on since the late 90's and pretty seriously since last summer. I've tried most of the techniques and products available and if it will be helpful to people, I can try to compile it all!
  9. Hello! I'm new to the forums and I saw that there was a role playing section so I wanted to see if there was anyone available to rp with me for Stormlight Archives! I don't really have a particular story in mind, so if there is a storyline for your canon or oc characters that you'd like to to try out, I am definitely open to suggestion! I have been rping for years and I do tend to feed off what is given to me in terms of length and literacy. I prefer moderately literate with 2-5 detailed paragraphs, but I have no problem writing more. I typically play female characters, both canon and oc. I have a few that will easily transition into the Cosmere. I do well with romance and emotional scenes, but I can do action as well. P.S.: If this isn't how you find RP's or isn't allowed, please let me know what to do differently! Thanks
  10. So i'm re-reading Stormlight an stumbled across this beautiful scene: This joke flew right over my head the first time. Last week I was reading that scene during my break at work and that one got me off guard. I literally start laughing and then had to explain to my coworkers what was so funny in my book. I just didn't remember that Pattern is the centre of such good jokes. On the other hand, it has been a while since i last read these books. Just wanted to share this memorable moment with you. That said, i hope you all have a nice day
  11. My first fanfic ended up accidentally becoming a novel! I hope people will read and enjoy it. The focus is on Kaladin working on healing from PTSD and depression in the context of a relationship with Adolin, and later, Shallan. It's got some hurt but a lot of comfort, and humour too https://archiveofourown.org/works/29727975/chapters/73115628
  12. Okay, so I had this idea after reading RoW. It's a little out there, but I was thinking it might be a way for invested people on Roshar to travel off world. Thanks to Navani's experiments, we know that stormlight and voidlight are connected to the tones of Honor and Odium, respectfully. Almost certainly the same of lifelight and Cultivation. I wonder if it's possible to transmit that in some way long distance, like a radio. Now, I don't that radios don't actually transmit the sound itself. The sound is encoded into radio waves that can be received and translated back into sound on the other side. Maybe if two gemstones were conjoined like span reeds, then a constant source of stormlight could be transmitted. Or maybe gemstones cut in a certain way could receive the tone sent out by a large gemstone transmitter or something, like car radios receiving a signal from a radio tower. Such a thing would need to be limited, only so much stormlight could flow through at a time, but a constant stream of stormlight could maybe act as an anchor to Roshar. Kind of an out there theory, like I said, but it could be a way to get stormlight, and possibly radiants, off of Roshar.
  13. So basically the kandra had red eyes, and I was talking to somebody and they mentioned odium and how he and autonomy were working together. So maybe if trell is a avatar of autonomy, then could odium send fused to help trell take over scadrial? If so, it would explain red eyes and the willingness to die.
  14. I'm excited to announce that the Kickstarter campaign for Stormlight Premium Miniatures is just two weeks away! So far, we've only revealed the official miniatures for Captain Kaladin and Shallan. So today, here's a teaser of Bridge Leader Kaladin. Next week, we'll start revealing more characters with previews on a number of websites ...including the 17th Shard! This project is the result of a multi-year partnership between Dragonsteel and Brotherwise Games. When we first proposed the idea of making miniatures, Brandon and Isaac saw the opportunity for a larger visual development project. This wasn't just the way to make some miniatures, it was the chance to truly collaborate with Brandon on official versions of almost every major character. This project features over 20 miniatures, and every one of them involved close collaboration and back-and-forth with Brandon. (As someone who has partnered with him before, on Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive, this was a very different process!) It also involved a wide range of artists, from 2D artists like Ben McSweeney and Marie Seeberger to 3D sculptors like Leo Pokorny. Even if you don't normally collect miniatures, we think you'll find something to love in this campaign. If nothing else, check it out to see our process for developing canonical versions of all these characters! The campaign starts on September 13, but if you want a reminder you can sign up here.
  15. This would be fun. Topics such as What If... Adolin Stayed Behind? or What If... Kaladin Had Grandparents?* or What If... Kaladin's Homecoming Was From Lirin's PoV? *meaning people who acted as his grandparents.
  16. Greetings Stormlight fans! Oh boy, do we have something fun for you today. Brotherwise Games, creators of the Call to Adventure Stormlight Archive game, have given us the exclusive first look at the Jasnah Kholin design for their miniatures Kickstarter coming later this month. Brotherwise have been working hard over the last year putting together designs for 20 of the main characters from the Stormlight Archive series. Working closely with Brandon himself, along with Isaac Stewart and Ben McSweeney, these minis will represent official depictions of nearly every major Stormlight character. So, without much further ado, let me present the one and only Jasnah Kholin: We also interviewed Johnny O’Neal, President of Brotherwise Games about the creative process behind this design. How did you start working on this miniatures project? Since about this time last year, I’ve been working directly with Isaac Stewart, Head of Creative at Dragonsteel. We established a great working relationship on Call to Adventure, and my favorite thing about that project was art directing more than 100 Brandon-approved pieces of Cosmere artwork. I thought this project would be similar. Instead, Isaac and Brandon proposed that this project would be an even closer partnership. They saw this as an opportunity to make truly official depictions of almost every major character in the series, as canonical as Ben McSweeney’s illustrations in the books. That really changed the process and made it more involved. Did you want to elaborate a bit on the process of creating these models? Were you able to take creative liberties, or was Brandon helping fill in the places you were not sure about? That’s just it. With Call to Adventure, we tried to make every image as accurate as possible, but Dragonsteel mostly made corrections, not suggestions. Brandon’s continuity team, led by Karen Ahlstrom, reviewed every piece of card art, and Brandon had final approval. Ultimately, though, those pieces came with the disclaimer that they were the artists’ interpretations of the characters. With this project, Isaac actually initiated the process. Almost every character started with pose sketches or outfit control drawings that he developed with Ben McSweeney. For the lead protagonists, Isaac also commissioned portrait turnarounds from Audrey Hotte. Brandon provided input throughout this process. Then our sculptors took the next step. Even with awesome 2D inputs, characters look different in 3D, and that led to more back and forth. Our sculpting team, led by Leo Pokorny, took things to the next level with some great ideas and interpretations. After multiple rounds of review, we’d arrive at a final character that pleased everyone. So this was a lot more than a miniatures project. In fact, you could say that the miniatures are just our way of funding a major visual development initiative for the IP. I’m excited for people to enjoy the physical products, but I’m even more psyched to know that these are the character designs Brandon can bring into Hollywood or videogame discussions and say, “look how cool these characters are.” Which character are you personally most excited for people to see? That’s a tough one! I might have to say Eshonai. Before this project, there really wasn’t a single canonical depiction of Parshendi characters. Even the more “official” art out there, like some of the card illustrations I’ve art directed, have conflicting features. While working on Eshonai, I feel like we cracked the code on warform facial structure and carapace, unlocking a visual language we applied to other Listener and Singer characters. Eshonai also has some awesome Shardplate, with tantalizing hints of Singer influence in its design. What can you tell us about the upcoming Kickstarter? We want this to be a Kickstarter that every single Stormlight fan will want to back. This is not just for fans who already collect miniatures, or for people who like painting miniatures. The figures come fully assembled, because I want these sets to be awesome display pieces even if you leave them in the package or set them on your bookshelf. That said, we will offer an official paint set and color turnarounds of every character, so this could be a fun way to learn miniature painting! We’ll also offer some painted miniatures at a slightly larger scale. Our standard miniatures are unpainted plastic, and they’re at a “34 mm scale,” just a notch bigger than standard 32 mm D&D miniatures. (We like the extra detail, and people on Roshar are tall!) For example, our unpainted Kaladin miniature is about 1.75 inches (45 mm) tall. It’s basically impossible to mass produce truly high-quality painted miniatures at that scale. So our painted miniatures are almost double that size. That treatment is pricier, so we’re only doing four characters in the painted treatment. Any plans for releasing a game that these minis can be used with? Yes. We’re not ready to talk about that yet, but we’ll say this: If you enjoy tabletop games and you get these miniatures now, they’ll integrate perfectly into our next big Stormlight project. Thanks for taking the time to hear about our miniatures! Working on this project has been an honor, and I’ve set aside a year’s worth of game design work for the chance to be hands-on art director for these character models. I’m still starstruck in every meeting with Brandon, and I feel so lucky to have this opportunity. I hope other Cosmere fans see this project and get a sense of how much love went into it! We’ve created a thread on the forum to discuss this reveal and the kickstarter. Johnny has even signed up to the forum and will be keeping an eye out for your questions. If you want to invite a tiny Jasnah into your home, you're in luck! Brotherwise Games' Kickstarter, set to launch on September 13th, will be offering the brightlady's likeness alongside twenty three other characters. The project preview page just went live, and you can sign up at this link to be notified as soon as it goes live.

  18. This episode of Shardcast, we're talking about the Venli chapters where she's Stoneshaping in Rhythm of War, the implications of the ancient past, and Ars Arcanum info! 20. In Oathbringer, we see the King’s Drop Ruby shining brightly in the Thaylen vaults. However, we also know that it is a perfect gemstone and that it never leaks stormlight. If this is the case, why do y’all think it is shining? If no stormlight can escape than it seems like it should appear dun. Also note it is shining and not reflecting as the Thaylen Vaults are really dark and even with a cloth covering the gemstone it still shines through it. In a way it seems like energy is coming from no where. I mention this because Wyndle refers to a cosmere equivalent of conservation of energy when explaining to Lift that she cant grow food with stormlight and eat it and have a net positive gain in calories or stormlight. However many Cosmere examples seem to contradict this so my best conclusion is the Wyndle is an unreliable source.
  21. In researching what might have caused the true desolation, I stumbled upon a theory. Hoid was once one of the heralds. Bear with me here... The Stonewards have a core tenet (per coppermind): "The core tenet of the order is be there when needed." And their gem stone is topaz (thinking of the first gem here). They enjoy exploring. They tend to be known for their can-do attitudes and for taking on enormous projects (sometimes more than they can handle). Now, we know that Hoid was once called Topaz and that he took his name after the first gem. We also know that Hoid knows where he needs to be. He explores the cosmere and is trying to something very ambition around collecting all the types of investiture. Sounds VERY similar. If Hoid, in collecting investiture, needed to get access to Braize, what would he do. No perpendicularity there. Why, talk the high and powerful among the humans on Roshar into an oathpact. One that he would join. Oathpact is made and they all go to Braize. Hoid finds what he needs, but now needs a way off Braize. So he leaks to the fused, that members of the oathpact could choose to go back to Roshar. This led to the torturing. And someone breaks. Once back on Roshar, Hoid finds someone to replace him, Taln. (This next bit is tenuous.) Because the Heralds were not expecting torture, they broke quickly this first time. Salash's bodygaurd, who came to Roshar from Ashyn with the rest of refugees, is still alive. He is chosen to replace Hoid and the connection to Honor is shifted to him. (Potentially because Ash had a crush on her body guard). Hoid is then free to leave Roshar through a perpendicularity and the oathpact remains in place. Through the strength of Taln's resolve to protect, desolations became hundreds of years apart. When the Knights Radiant are formed, Taln uses Hoid as a role model when making the Stonewards, in honor of Hoid making the Oathpact exist in the first place. This Theory answers a couple of questions. When/why was Hoid on Roshar before, dancing with ancient singers and able to recognize fused. Why do the Stonewards sound so similar to Hoid. Why Taln is not a Herald, well not the original Herald.
  22. Cosmere Theory My Partner and I have a Nahel-type bond: Much like every Radiant in the Stormlight Archive, we made our Oaths in good faith, but we learn both the true nature and the true power of that Bond only through shared experiences. Unlike the Skybreakers, we cannot be told simply what the ideals are; we must discover them ourselves, and we will either know them and progress, or not. To really double-down on our Sanderson Nerdosity, during complete Pandemic Lock-Down (before Rhythm of War), we adopted two cats: One orange female, and one grey-white-speckled male. After looking through dozens of mythologies and legends for famous or historical red-haired females, we decided upon Shallan as a perfect name for a very young cat who makes questionable choices. On one hand, our grey-and-white male appears to be partially Norwegian Forest Cat, and has a magnificent mane of floof that is perpetually in a (fashionably) messy state. On the other hand, as he has grown, his pattern has constantly changed, while somehow still remaining the same… Pattern. We named our other cat Pattern, because our human child thought ‘Adolin’ was too regal-sounding for our derpy floof who still has difficulty interacting in the Physical Realm. So, I’m walking through our house, and commenting on how our feline Shallan has a Spren (Pattern the Cat), and my Partner corrects me: “Shallan has TWO Spren. Which one is Testament?” Well, this began a roil of thoughts in my head that I began to spit out as soon as I could think: There is constant reminding of Compounding as a mathematical and magical trait in the Cosmere. We are given the phrase ‘Compounding’ specifically as early as Alloy of Law, wherein Miles Hundredlives is using both Allomancy and Feruchemy to get a different effect from what would normally be the result of 1 +1. We are also told --repeatedly—by Khriss that Roshar has evidence of several symbiotic Bonds that produce different effects that what they historically created. We know that the Cosmere has a great deal of crossover, *particularly* revealed in Rhythm of War, where we see Aviar with Talents from the Pantheon, The Iridescent Tones from Hallendren, and the influence of Thaidakar. So, in as many words as possible, I’m getting around to this: Compounding exists. Holding Two Shards Exists (Sazed/ Harmony) It is possible to bond to two Spren simultaneously (Shallan w/ Pattern and Testament) Stormlight, Lifelight, Voidlight, Towerlight, Warlight, Anti-Voidlight, and Anti-Stormlight all exist. The Tones of Roshar and the Iridescent Tones both exist on Roshar. Dalinar is Bonded to Honor (Via the Stormfather), cultivated by Cultivation, and both groomed and in a pact with Odium (the Power, if no longer Rayse). What makes this compounding, alloying, and directing of and by Shards most interesting is that Cultivation gave Taravangian the capacity to take Odium’s Power. That isn’t the same thing as Sazed claiming both Preservation and Ruin, but it is an example of a slightly different dynamic: Cultivation has her tendrils in both Dalinar and Taravangien, and despite the Will of Odium, that has to count for something. Even if it takes 6 books for that Cultivation to bear real fruit. Raboniel was able to create a weapon that could kill a god, while (presumably) being tied only to Odium. Dalinar has strong ties to Honor and Odium, yes, but the power of Cultivation cannot be understated, particularly when both the powers of Honor and Cultivation will inevitably come into play against Odium (and that's before assuming that extra Shards don't weigh in for the next 5-book arc!)
  23. Got thinking about the names Ba-Ado-Mishram and Adonalsium and the fact that they appear to have a common root, so I started looking to see if Brandon had hidden any sort of meaning into a few of his names. I figured that giving meaning to the name of his overall Cosmere divinity sounded like a very Brandon thing to do. I took a look to see if anyone else had figured out what it meant. Adoda of course mean light, which we know from Oathbringer. I couldn't find anything specific for "Nalsium", "Nal", or "Sium", although now I wonder if Nalthis has a similar root as well. When I looked for "ba ado mishram", I found a post on 17th shard where a member guessed it translated to "void light giver", which would be cool. However, I've been doing some digging and I came up with an alternate theory. I think I scored a hit when I Googled "Mishram." Turns out, "Mishra" in Hindi means "mixed manifold" or "mixed in multiple ways". So I tried translating "Ba" into Hindi. Turns out, in Hindi "Ba" is a number. It means 3. If you put that together with "Ado" translating to "Light", then that would mean that Ba-Ado-Mishram roughly translates to "three lights mixed in many ways." IDK about you, but that seems significant to me, especially considering what happened when Ba-Ado-Mishram was captured. I've hit on two other matches. The Hindi word for "light" is Roshanee. Considering where the original glyph for Roshar came from, this seems right to me. Also, Threnody is a somewhat-archaic English word that is a synonym for "lament". I know that Brandon doesn't always use root words to add meaning to his names and locations, but I know that sometimes he adds them for his own pleasure if he can find an appropriate match that sounds right. I can't match any of the other Unmade names to any words in Hindi (although I'm hindered by the fact that I definitely don't know the language.) Anyone else find roots to common words in different languages?
  24. I'm a huge Stormlight Archive fan who happens to be a nuclear engineer. Perhaps it's my weird brain, but I find parallels between stormlight and atomic energy. I also find inspiration in the books for the perseverance I need when advocating for a source of energy that, like stormlight, can be used for both good and evil. I wrote a blog post about it here. I also took the time to showcase some great Stormlight fan fiction (with permission). I hope you find it interesting. Happy to answer questions or critiques here
