  2. It's hinted at in Oathbringer that the big pillar of gemstones in the library is part of a fabrial, or that the city itself is a fabrial. Is it unlikely that the spren in this fabrial was the Sibling? We know that all fabrials require a spren, and the Sibling is just another spren. Indeed, Re-Shephir has once been trapped in a gemstone, and at the end of the book Nargaoul is in the gemstone called King's Drop, which is a gemstone that doesn't lose stormlight and which the unmade supposedly would be incapable of getting out of. This idea has got to have some measure of accuracy. Also, the King's Drop brings up more questions: Must the gemstone be cut perfectly* for the spren inside to be incapable of escape, since other fabrials lose stormlight and their spren don't escape. * cut perfectly, meaning stormlight doesn't leek from it So if it wasn't the cut that mattered (which is still under debate, by the way), was it the size of the gem Dalinar needed? Because there were plenty of other gems around to use. What would a fabrial with that cut (and with Nargaoul inside) do? We know from Navani's notebook that the cut of the gem influences what the fabrial does. Are there multiple ways to cut a gem so that it doesn't leek? Could such a gem trap Odium without having to make an oathpact? And what does the Urithiru fabrial do anyway? The elevators seem to work independently of that. It's in the middle of the library, so that might be a clue.

  5. Is there an official explanation as to how Vasher survives Roshar by substituting Stormlight for Breath? The basis of my question is due to my current understanding of investiture. I've always thought of investiture as analogous to electricity. At electricity's core it's the basic principle of moving charges, but each country/region has differing outlets for that electricity and you have to have the right cord or adapter in order to access that outlet. Thus in my mind, investiture is the power, and the shard/shards of each world dictate how that power is accessed by the general populous. Hoid is a good example of someone who's accessed multiple adapters in order apply investiture in different ways, but Vasher is not shown (to my knowledge) to exhibit anything other than his native Breath/Awakening magic. So how is Vasher able to adapt to Stormlight to fulfill his constant need for investiture to keep himself alive? Does he have to actively absorb stormlight or is he a sort of "ground" that investiture just wants to flow into? Does he have to stand out in the highstorm with all the spheres in order to recharge, or do spheres seem to go dun a little faster around him? How does he survive the Weeping? Can he also pull investiture from the Everstorm/Voidlight? Also, as I write this I'm starting to wonder. Is there yet a cosmere unit of investiture? Do we know the "voltage difference" between one breath versus spheres? Thanks, -Ren
  6. Hi fellas. I have recently finished the stormlight books, which btw were my first cosmere experience. I was wondering what I should get my hands on next, so mistborn, elantris, or warbreaker? What are your suggestions? Mind you I've read "Alloy of Law", because I needed a book for a project also I thought about a new mistborn reading order, which goes by AoL first, then the original trilogy, and finishing with Wax and Wayne trilogy. Cheers!
  7. It’s been stated that prior to arriving in the Rosharan System, Odium paid a visit to Sel to check out the scenery, kill a couple of Gods, usual touristy stuff. By what I can gather, this happened quite some time before the Reod, and predates Shu-Keseg, the parent religion of Shu- Dereth, leaving a lot of time in the aftermath for the events of that interaction to fall into legend and myth. Brandon has also said that if you looked hard enough you could find the influence of Odium on Sel still. During the events of Elantris, it is said that Jadeth is an old pagan God who cared for the stones, but Shu-Dereth thrust him into their mythology when it split from Shu-Keseg proper. Considering the connection between Odium and Stone in stormlight archive, this is at least plausible. This isn’t to say that Shu-Dereth worships Odium directly, or that Dakhor Magic is of his power, as their religion and culture obviously fit better with Dominion. However, over time images of deities can shift and blend. Add to this, that when Hrathen meets Dilaf, he is careful to note his PASSION and basically states that if one can use that passion to achieve the desired Dominion, then it would be a tool he would use carefully but willingly. Dilaf’s motives in the story are driven much more by hatred than domination, and so it makes me wonder about how deep the influence of Odium goes in Fjordell culture.
  8. So, I've only read Oathbringer once and I'm still a little confused. Oathbringer spoilers follow.
  9. I don’t know if this is quite the right board for this, but I’ll just go for it. The Escape the Shattered Plains VR experience is coming out tomorrow, and since I assume the vast majority of people won’t be strapping on a VR headset to try it themselves, I thought I’d volunteer to try and record a playthrough of the experience, if people are interested in watching it. I’d probably make it this weekend, but given my minimal experience with screen recording and video editing, who knows. The playthrough, if people want it, would likely be just the game’s sights and sounds, no commentary from me. I could do one with commentary and my thoughts and reactions, too, if people were interested in that as well. Maybe someone’s already planning to do this, maybe not, but I figured I’d offer. What do you all think?
  10. OK so for most of Words of Radiance We see things like this cool symbol whenever Shallan has a PoV chapter: Whenever we get one of her flashbacks we see something like this: With inverted colors. However... It wasn't always like this. Below is Shallan's last PoV chapter (chapter 7) Look familiar? Yes. Look at the Prologue, which features Jasnah: It has the same picture. Why did Shallan's picture change from a view of Shadesmar (Better question: it's shadesmar, right?) to a swirling patten? And I know what some of you may be thinking, but Pattern is described as a set of lines - not curves (I am 87.32% sure). So I don't think that its Pattern. Did it have something to do with the events of Chapter 7? Possibly. In this chapter, Shallan lightweaved (not for the first time, though, right?). She also soulcast an ENTIRE ship into water (once again, not for the first time, right?). You guys are smarter than me and maybe even discussed this already. What are your theories?
  11. Here is Isaac's rendition of the khakh glyph! It means "determination" and is a glyph that appears in The Way of Kings as a part of a glyphpair on Amaram's banners.
  12. This week, we have a very cool episode where we interview Ewan Johnson of Arcturus XR, who works on the Stormlight VR experience, Escape from the Shattered Plains. We learn about him and his pedigree (he worked in Pixar since '94), the experience itself, and adaptations they needed to make to the lore to make the experience cohesive. It was really cool, and I'm really excited about the experience. He also said that the VR experience is coming to Oculus Rift as well as to Vive, which before now was buried in the Steam page and not in the official press release. We also have news from Arcturus: they will be at Emerald City Comic Con, in Seattle, Washington, March 1-4, with demos of the VR experience for you to try! There will also be a giveaway of some sort. We've known Brandon will be there for quite some time, but if you are going there, I'm super jealous for you to see the VR experience. We hope you enjoy the interview, and we'll be back next week with a sweet episode on Sja-anat.
  13. We heard Variety report this in May 2017, and we have seen many teasers on Facebook and Twitter. But yesterday, Arcturus officially announced the Escape from the Shattered Plains VR experience. It will be out for the HTC Vive, and it will be released March 2nd for $10.99. In this experience, you'll take the role of Kaladin, meet Syl, encounter a highstorm, use some Lashings, and fight some Parshendi. Brandon says in a statement: "“I am beyond excited to finally be able to present this VR experience of The Way of Kings after many months of long, hard work from the teams at DMG and Arcturus. It’s the first time my fans will be able to experience a thrilling adventure in Roshar and see what it’s like to be in the Shattered Plains.” This short form adaptation is written by Joshua Rubin, the lead writer behind games such as Destiny and Assassin's Creed. You can watch the trailer below: There does seem to be some gameplay mechanics from the trailer, with some sort of rudimentary Lashing system, and some sort of fighting mechanics, but I would not expect these to be extremely fleshed out as they would be in a game. Additionally, if you're not familiar with VR, generally the graphical fidelity is worse than standard games because it has to render more for both eyes. Keep that in mind when watching the trailer. Generally, VR experiences are rather short and are very much not complete games. According to the Variety report (which was in May, so this could have changed), the experience is merely 15 minutes long. This has been in development since March of last year and has reportedly cost "seven figures" to make. DMG Entertainment, the people who hold the movie rights to the cosmere (and, in particular, Stormlight), wanted this made mostly to create hype for Hollywood executives so they could understand how cool Roshar is. I think in that context this makes a lot of sense--it isn't really for us, but if you have a Vive, you can do this experience too.

  15. Welcome to Shardcast, and Happy New Year! We are starting this year with a podcast that's way too long, but there's much to talk about. We're talking about Dalinar visiting the Valley and the Nightwatcher, and all that stuff. Obviously, there are Oathbringer spoilers here. We talk about the Old Magic, the age of the Old Magic, and of course, the Stormfather's love of the Oxford comma. (I'm only somewhat kidding.) I'm Eric, and I'm joined today with Ian (WeiryWriter), and Matt (Comatose)--who you can hear actually rifling through pages of his physical Oathbringer copy. What a weirdo. (Just kidding.) Apologies on this podcast coming a bit late this week. I was traveling and this took quite some time to edit! See you next week.
  16. From the album: The Leap

Threw it into Photoshop to make some final effects after first fixing his vest, unifying the shadows, adding in some wind-spren/Syll etc.
  17. Judging by the minimal attention that these videos have been getting, I feel as though the majority of the SA fandom are unaware of the Arcturus YouTube channel, where excerpts from the SA VR experience are being posted! I wasn’t sure where to put this, so I’ve stuck it here. (Sorry if it is in the wrong place). Here’s the teaser video, where we can see what a high storm looks like and what Stormlight does to people: Here’s an introduction to Syl: Finally, here’s some Lashing in action: Enjoy!
  18. Edit: Lots of Mistborn spoilers, all eras! So I have been daydreaming about this a bit, and thought my fellow nerds sharders might enjoy it too. If Harmony were to turn someone (who knows how to fight, obv) into a Fullborn, give them a fat bag of metals and another fat bag of Atium beads and send them to Roshar, would anyone be able to stop him? I assume an army's worth of Radiants hacking away might do the trick eventually, but anything short of that? Fullborn has to be the most OP in Cosmere
  19. I am currently reading WoR for the fourth time, and I am thinking less about the storyline, and more about the Cosmere, and how Roshar fits into all of this. I thought about this at one point, as Jasnah said that seeing the future is of the voidbringers. Or Odium. Ruin's body is Atium, a metal that allows certain Allomancers to see a very short way into the future. I feel like this is very important, but I don't know how.
  20. Greatshells - such as the Chasm Beasts - pupate as storms approach so that new Spren can enter their gemhearts.
  21. Hi guys. So I've seen a lot of people talk about Moash in threads so far. So I decided to start one on him. Here you can talk about what you think about his charachter. Weather what he has done is morally right. Moash, to me, represents what Kaladin could have become. They are both so similar and one of their biggest differences is a choice. Kaladin chose not to let his past rule him. While Moash let what Roshone and the king had done rule him. He let his past control him. I am of the opinion that Moash should be killed in this book. He has already had his second chance but instead of taking it he turned against bridge four. And later he joined the voidbringers and killed Elhokar. He let vengeance become his life. And when he fulfilled it he felt less fulfilled. What do you guys think?
  22. Beware of spoilers, obviously. I suppose this qualifies more as a speculation than a question, but I figured I might as well ask. Having finished the Mistborn Trilogy several months ago, and being very near the end of Oathbringer, I had a thought. Thinking of characters like Odium, Cultivation and Honor, as well as Preservation and Ruin, and other Shards of Adonalsium, I began to wonder as to their respective strengths. In Mistborn, Ruin and Preservation were very near, if not identical, in strength, with Vin being able to destroy both herself and Ruin (consciousnesses only, but the Power itself remained, of course) and in Oathbringer the Stormfather talks about Odium being cautious to not overextend, lest he risk Cultivation climbing out of hiding to strike at him while he's vulnerable. This made me wonder, just how strong is Odium? And Sazed, now possessing both Ruin and Preservation, just how does he compare? Being in possession of two Shards, is he effectively twice as strong as someone like Odium or Cultivation, or do you guys think that maybe the Shards are not always equal in power?
  23. Hi guys, I'm new to the Sanderson Fanbase community but a longtime Sanderson Fan. I have listened to the Stormlight Archives twice through via Audible and just started Way of Kings again. Sanderson's world creation ability is incredible, and these books keep pulling me back. Anyways, I've recently had a great idea about making a video game based on this universe. I'll explain it if there is enough interest. If anyone has experience in coding, 3D/2D art or game creation I'd like to open a discussion with you. I studied animation in college and know a lot about the 3D art creation pipeline so I'm looking for people with skills in character concept modeling and coding to help me out. Also, if anyone knows how to rig character models in maya then that would save me a lot of time relearning that skill. If you want to see some of the ideas about Stormlight - The Videogame, you can check out my "Introduce Yourself" post here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/52812-stormlight-the-videogame-help-wanted/ Have a good one folks, hope to hear from you. Chris
  24. For school, I have to compare and contrast a specific part The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I am writing my essay on the plot structure. Ideas would be appreciated. I already plan to write about how they both focus around a character, WoK around Kaladian and WoR around Shallan, and tell that character's backstory through flashbacks. However, more ideas to help me out would be great.
  25. Just posted up a new gallery album with some Kaladin Fanart in it. I'm working on getting it up on my shop/website as well, but in the mean time: enjoy!
