  1. From the album: Syl Doodles

Not anything special, but fun to make. I was just testing out some of my friend's markers she got for Christmas, and made some little doodles
  2. ....that it’s only a matter of time before they have sex. As soon as they met they hated each other — that is fiction-speak for “these two people will end up together”. It’s like the saying “if you see a gun in the first act, it had better go off by the third act.” Now that Shallan is married, it’ll be a torrid love affair. As I read Oathbringer I thought for sure it would happen by the end of the book, but no such luck. Maybe Brandon is a pleasure-delayer.... That begs the question: what would these books be rated? PG? PG-13? R? It would be cool to see more R rated stuff.... just saying but it’s probably more like PG-13.
  3. For Christmas, I got one of those little cinema light-boxes, usually intended for inspiring quotes and the like, but being the insanely obsessed Sanderfan that I am, I put the following quote... We love a good Stick meme.
  4. From the album: Stormlight Characters

    Portrait of Gallant Dalinar's Ryshadium.
  5. From the album: Stormlight Characters

My illustration of Sureblood Adolin's Ryshadium.
  6. I was wondering why there was a lack of Rlain in the second half of oathbringer given that the other squires got quite a bit of coverage and according to Peter Ahsltrom this was intentional on Brandon's part. I believe that during his absence, Rlain has made contact with surviving listeners on the shattered plains. He will be key to uniting the humans and parsh people similarly to Dalinar uniting humans together. If the third godspren is in urithuru then there is a real possibility that Rlain becomes a bondsmith. If the third godspren is slumbering as the storm father says he is then maybe Rlain's efforts will awaken it similarly to Syl finding Kaladin. What do you guys think? Any theories on who/where/why is the sibling?
  7. So dumb question, If a radiant were to ask their spren to turn into "Shard Wire" would it still have the cutting power of the blade? Would it be possible to have 50ft long hair thin shard wire and have it windmill everything in the region to slivers?
  8. So I've just started reading Way of Kings, and I was wondering about the burn rate of Stormlight in Surgebinding, in relation to Allomantic metals. For example, is it as slow as tin or copper, or does it burn like pewter, or even as fast as atium? I know they're not really comparable, but it would be cool to get a perspective on this from someone who knows a bit more about The Stormlight Archive and has read Mistborn.
  9. I made this account yesterday, shortly after finishing the WoR and deciding to scour the interwebs for answers to my questions. I've been reading these forums for two days now, and haven't come across any mention of the Shash brand on Kaladin's forehead. It's one of the things I find most interesting about him, and here's why: Lopen taught himself to use Stormlight, and immediately his arm began to regrow. A severed limb is something that would have been completely covered with scar tissue in these times, and would likely have been cauterized to avoid an almost certain death. This (in physiological terms, at least) makes it identical to Kaladin's scar. However, I believe that it's been made abundantly clear that the Shash brand on Kaladin's forehead is just something he is going to live with forever (and he won't be covering it up with a tattoo, either). The books have made no mention of Kaladin trying specifically to heal the scar with stormlight, and I don't believe they ever will. He is probably able to do it, but being that he is bound to an Honorspren, I think he feels morally obligated to be honest, even with those whom he is about to kill. His scar tells even those who do not know him that whether he is a free man or a slave, being in his presence is tantamount to being in the presence of danger. And what is Kaladin, if not honest? Let me know if I'm missing something here.
  10. I have had this in my mind since way back when we learned that healing mostly depended on the self-image of the healed person (at least with Stormlight). Does this mean that if for some reason, call it magic, call it brainwashing, or the super-power of extreme self-delusion, you had a Radiant believe that he is phisically different from what he is, he would "heal" into that new shape? You convince a tall man that he was short and should be short, or convince another that he was changed to a man by evil magic but he was instead a woman... Would they eventually "heal" themselves until they are a short man and a woman, respectively? Or maybe it wold only work with less drastic changes, like change of skin tone, gain/loss of muscular mass, minor alterations in facial features, etc... Is this possible to "heal" into something/someone else if you confuse enough the mind that's supposed to filter the investiture? Possible cons: I do remember mention of a "perfect version of self" stored in the Spiritual realm, that the cognitive aspect uses as a template for healing, but that "perfect version" ought to be modificable, or else no matter how Kaladin sees himself, his perfect version wouldn't have scars and he would not heal them back.
  11. Anyone know any cool tests, that relate to the ShardBearers. & do any other books tie into it? Thanks!
  12. Hey everyone! After some much needed distance from the books and world of Roshar, I am diving back in from the very beginning and reading through to the end of Oathbringer. Unlike the 7 or 8 times I’ve read the first two books, where I did so for the pure pleasure of it, this time I am rereading with a specific purpose in mind: an in-depth analysis of one of the most confusing and unreliable characters in Stormlight, also known as Shallan Davar. Before I get started, I want to thank those of you who have welcomed me onto the Shard and liked my posts up until now. I have really come to enjoy the Shard, and it's nice to talk about the Cosmere with those who care about it as much as, or more, than I do. Special thanks go to @SLNC, who frequently is able to phrase things I am trying to say in a more concise and direct way, especially when my posts are nearly half a page (on here) long. I'd also like to thank @Fifth of Daybreak, who helped me immensely in developing my "forum voice" and was willing to carry on a rather lengthy debate and call me out when I was getting too heated, without ever making me feel like my thoughts were insignificant. @maxal has also frequently been a rational and contrary voice that explains the opposite side of the fence from me in coherent and well-thought out replies, which is crucial in any effective discussion. Let me preface this analysis by saying that this is a project I have wanted to tackle for a long time. Originally, I intended to do this as a set-up for Oathbringer, but with the birth of my second daughter and complications after, I ran out of time. Then, I planned on doing this immediately after my first read-through of Oathbringer, but other things in life and my own mental state after reading the book forced it to be put on hold until I could be at a place where I could approach this from a more neutral ground. As a little bit of background, when I first read through The Way of Kings, I fell in love with the character of Shallan almost instantly. As an artist myself who has often lived on the side of the fence where I never seem to fit in, no matter how I changed myself or what I did, she resonated with me and spoke to me in a way that almost no other character in any fiction has ever done. Her sense of humor is right up my alley, and having been raised in a somewhat sheltered environment, I see a lot of myself in this character, and the more I read The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, the more I grew fascinated with her story and how she came to be. Then I read Oathbringer, and her story was hard for me to read, but not because it was tedious or boring, but rather because in a small way, it mirrored something I went through in high school. I love the character--in fact, I believe I actually love her more now than before--but with the chaotic mess that was Shallan in Oathbringer, I believe this is now the right time for this analysis to occur. In some part, this analysis was inspired by @maxal, whose analysis of Adolin pre-Oathbringer was one of the motivating factors in my joining the Shard in the first place. I’ve also observed, as I’ve seen many people comment on the character, that a large majority of readers have a difficult time liking or understanding the character, and some skip her chapters entirely. As Shallan is by far my most favorite character in the entire Cosmere, my hope is that through this analysis I can bring some of what I find intriguing and fun about this character to everyone else. The inconsistency and unreliability of the narrator are only part of the fun. As I progress through this read-through, I will be making a bunch of notes privately, that will probably be completely incomprehensible to anyone else. If you really want to see them, ask and I will post them; however, I will revise those notes into a coherent document that will be updated as I read. During my analysis, I will focus on a few things about the character. Yes, there will be a little bit of analysis of the shipping involved (be warned), but I will strive my hardest to approach it from a neutral ground and point out the good and the bad, as I see it, on both sides. Other aspects of Shallan’s character that I will focus on and try to analyze and explain are: How her past (as it is mentioned in the text) has influenced the narrator we’re reading. Modern influences on the character of Shallan and how that affects the narrator we're reading. Mental jiggery-pokery, or in other words, her mental side-stepping habits, and the immediate and long-lasting ramifications of it. Contradictions in the narrator’s voice, and why those contradictions are occurring. Comparisons between Shallan and Kaladin, with respects to interests, mannerisms, interactions, and mental states Comparisons between Shallan and Adolin, with respects to interests, mannerisms, interactions, and mental states I should note that comparisons between Shallan and the two boys will occur primarily from Shallan's standing. My reasons for the view I have comes entirely from the standpoint of Shallan as a character, not from whether or not I think Kaladin is a better match or Adolin is. As I said, I will try hard to be impartial in my analysis here, and will try to stay away from my opinions on Kaladin or Adolin, generally. SIDE NOTE: I like both of them and I like both of them for her, and for different reasons. I just happen to think one is better than the other, but that is neither here nor there. Comparisons between Shallan and Wayne (from Mistborn Era 2) There are some similarities between what Wayne and Shallan do, and also some stark differences on how those actions affect their mental states. And I’m sure there are other topics that will come up as I read. If there’s something about the character that you feel I haven’t mentioned that you would like included in the analysis, please let me know and I will do my best to incorporate it. If you have thoughts on something I've written, tell me. Discussion is encouraged--I merely am hoping that this will help to make Shallan a more enjoyable character for everyone. One thing I do ask, however, is to stay away from flippant and antagonistic comments--to disagree with me is okay, and it doesn't matter to me if we never agree. On that note…here we go. Let's start The Way of Kings again. EDIT: At @Jofwu's suggestion, I'm including the text from the document below the chapters for ease of discussion (also for indexing, as @Vissy recommended), but I will also have a comprehensive document that keeps track of changes to Shallan over the course of the books. The big document: WayofKings Shallan Character Analysis.docx Chapter 3 - City of Bells: Chapter 5 - Heretic:
  13. If you are looking for a new series to read, have you heard of this Brandon Sanderson guy? He writes some pretty great stuff. We're fans. Among his best and most popular is his Stormlight Archive series, and if you're in the US and Canada, you can get the first three books, The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, and Oathbringer for $2.99 a piece. This sale will end November 5th, but what a killer deal. Stormlight Archive books are long. If you read these first three, it'll be over a million words long. But you get rich characters, and rich worldbuilding. If you're interested, now's the absolute best time to grab these. In addition, a package of all three Stormlight books runs $7.18 on all retailers (such as Amazon and Google Play), which again, is absurd for the hours of entertainment you'll get from this. You'll spend less than a movie ticket, and you'll get some incredible books.
  14. I went to the Skyward book signing in Seattle! It was great, and in Sanderson's presentation, he talked about books he's written that failed. One such book was the 2002 version of WoK. It was so different than what we all know! No spren, no Knights Radiants, and no Bridge Four. Basically, the story starts with Taln stumbling into a town with a shardblade, and saying a disasters coming, and the story goes through trying to figure out whether he's actually a herald, and whether he's telling the truth or not. He said there were too many viewpoint characters at once, and none of there stories got far enough fast enough. According to Brandon, it failed, but he plans to maybe publish it after he's finished the Stormlight series as another thing for fans to enjoy. Some of it is still cannon apparently. The process of revising that old version came the Knights Radiants, and from them came the ideas for spren, and from redoing the viewpoint stuff came Bridge 4. Just thought other fans would want to know. It was really fascinating, and he even read an excerpt from it.
  15. A piece I'm currently working on of Kaladin fighting a Voidbringer! I'm hoping I'll have time to finish it and do colors in the next week or two (I'm currently doing Nanowrimo) I'm currently doing a kickstarter to print and ship my other pieces of art before Christmas. I'll have my other Cosmere fanart available to preorder! If you want, you can check it out here: http://kck.st/2yG1uaQ And yes, I double checked to make sure this was okay with Dragon Steel and is within their fanart policy ;)
  16. I finally got my Khakh glyph mask painted! I do Historical European Martial Arts and study Liechtenauer's German Longsword. Khakh means "determination", which is something that's important to me throughout all of my training and sparring matches. Hope you guys like it! Painted by my longsword instructor. Thanks to Isaac from Dragonsteel for making all of the awesome glyphs in the Stormlight Archives.
  17. Hi everyone! Some of you may recognize my Cosmere art floating around the internet for a while. I'm kinda obsessed with the Stormlight Archive. I'm actually doing a kickstarter right now to fund the printing and shipping of my art as prints! I've already hit my funding goal so if you pledge you'll get your rewards before Christmas. I'm offering my Cosmere fanart in it! So if you want to give the gift of Sanderson fanart (or just want some for yourself), you should check it out. I have medium and large prints and I'm also doing a metal print of "Unite Them" with Dalinar Kholin that doubles as a really cool bookmark. And in case your wondering, this does follow the fanart guidelines set by DragonSteel, so this is in fact legal and okay. I even doubled check with them just to be sure! Here's the link if you want to check it out! http://kck.st/2yG1uaQ Pledges must be in by November 15th!
  18. Aaand here is the second part of my Cosmere tattoo journey!! The Bridge Four tattoo that everyone gets in the book after they are freed from Sadeas and becomes Dalinar Kholin's and the Kholin's bodyguards and eventually storming awesome Radiants!! Here's hoping, I'll become one, if I believe hard enough!! Hey, hey Kaladin! Hit me up! I'd be an excellent Bridge Four candidate!! Looking forward to hearing from you, Kaladin Storm leased and you too, Syl!!
  19. On a recent visit to Venice, I came across this painting by Titian in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, clearly showing a young child Invested with Stormlight...Probably a Lightweaver I suspect. Later the same day, we found ourselves in a church where a choir opened a choral performance with "O Radiant Dawn..." Just wanted to share !
  20. Yesterday, Brandon turned in the second draft to the sequel of Skyward. This is good news, as he said that he had to scrap large chunks of Skyward 2. Brandon figuring out how to make that book work is good news for all of us! He also updates us with what his plans are for the future. Writing on Stormlight 4 begins, for sure, in January! In the meantime, Brandon says he will get revisions done on a few smaller projects. But you might be wondering, "wasn't he planning to write The Lost Metal, the last Wax and Wayne book, before January?" Well, Brandon's been saying at signings that might not happen. In this tweet, Brandon says, "I do promise to find time for the last Wax and Wayne book somewhere, too." At some signings, he has said he may do it in between parts of Stormlight 4. This will likely mean no cosmere in 2019, since Brandon isn't writing Lost Metal this year. Steel Alphabet Rings by Badali In other news, Badali Jewelry, who has done a variety of Brandon related jewelry, now has custom Steel Alphabet rings. You can have your own phrase, written in the Steel Alphabet! Your phrase has a maximum of 20 characters, but it's pretty awesome nonetheless. They are pretty pricey though: the cheapest is $129 for a sterling silver one, and uh, $1500 if you want it in real gold! Still, the effect of the ring is really nice: Isaac Stewart, artist extraordinaire for Dragonsteel (who made these symbols), says, "I can vouch for these rings. They're very well-made and are so beautiful. (Of course, I'm biased, but I have one with my name on it, and I absolutely love it!)" Of course, let us know if you happen to propose to your significant other with these rings.
  21. Ivory and Jasnah Kholin from Oathbringer.
  22. 1. If one we to use Nightblood during a Highstorm would it instinctively absorb the surrounding Investiture? 2. Is there some correlation between the Mists and Highstorms?
  23. I have a theory that Szeth was a developing surgebinder/ Knight Radiant prior to becoming the Assassin in White. When he tried to tell others about his powers, or even that the Knight’s Radiant were returning, they refused to believe him, and renounced him Truthless. The first evidence I noticed of this is from Words of Radiance. This is a passage from Kaladin and Szeth’s first encounter: Szeth is horrified and enraged after hearing Kaladin claim to be a Windrunner. He cannot believe the Knight’s Radiant are returning, because if it’s true then he was wrongly named Truthless and all the killing and suffering was put upon him unjustly. Even stronger evidence comes from Oathbringer when Szeth is confiding in Nightblood: I think the voice he is remembering was a spren he had bonded in his youth. A spren he ultimately killed through his actions as the Assassin in White. Does anyone else have any opinions? If he wasn't previously a surgebinder, what was the voice he was referring to? Also, I found it surprising that I couldn’t find anyone else talking about this. Feel free to let me know if there is already a post somewhere on the same topic that I missed.
