I am relatively new to Brandon's work. I read Mistborn 2 years ago and then kind of moved around other authors and other work for a long time. I finished reading Steelheart today and once again I was immensely impressed with the story pace. One of the things I felt was sorely lacking though was heart and emotion, especially from the main character. The scene that really made it hard for me to connect to the characters was when the reenter the bank underground. David see's his dead dad forever preserved in steel and has absolutely zero emotional reaction. Someone who is reliving the events he experienced as a young 8 year old. Zero emotional response to seeing his dead father. And then the other characters also have zero emotional support knowing what a normal person should feel in such a situation. If nothing else Davids convictions should have been renewed or whatever else, otherwise this scene has literally no bearing on the story because there is no emotion there. It was hard for me to connect with David from that point on. This is only exacerbated by his "relationship" with Megan.. but thats for another thread. What do you think is the reason for this lack of emotion? And if David has become void of even these simple emotions over his father, why is his drive for revenge/ seeing his fathers dream become a reality so strong? I don't think it adds up. Otherwise I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I did Mistborn.

Just jumping into the forums. Originally I signed up to post a meme here that I based on the Stormlight Archive (att. below) but I intend to stay! And really I intended to join before but never got around to it. Just threw together a profile pic and feeling at home here already. IMO Stormlight Archive is Sanderson's clear masterpiece, but my personal favorite is Elantris currently. Favorite character Steelheart with Marsh as a second.

It's that time again! Time to start making lists of minor grammatical and/or typographical errors! I only saw one, myself: My Amazon U.S. Kindle version, bought the 3rd: Ch 1. (Page 20?) It has "Prof been acting weird lately", as opposed to "Prof had been acting weird lately," or perhaps "Prof'd been acting weird lately."

A question that's been lurking around in my mind for quite some time now is that are you born an epic or is there a certain age at which you become a epic. I have my doubts about David being an epic.. i mean he's definitely not one yet but if there is a certain age or a specific time in your life that triggers you becoming a epic then theres a chance David will become an epic in future sequels.

I am listing possible theories that have been discussed as to Steelheart's weakness: 1) Genetic/Metal: Only David's father / the bullet that was fired can harm him because of unique properties. 2) Harry Potter: David's father was protecting him from Steelheart/Deathpoint, which allowed the killing shot to work. 3) Intention: David's father wasn't intending to harm him, he was intending to harm Deathpoint 4) Inheritance(reference to the book series) : David's father was trying to help Steelheart , which allowed him to hurt Steelheart. 5) Radiation: Something in the bank (gold?) interfered with Steelheart's abilities 6) Mortal Wounds: Only a shot that will kill and intended to kill someone can hurt Steelheart before it hits the target Have fun explaining why each is wrong!

There was some great imagery in the prologue of Steelheart, but the scene where Deathpoint points at David just jumped off the page at me. After thinking about how to approach it, I spent last night and today sketching out this scene. I'm glad I was able to get it done. I had a bit of trouble deciding how to draw the mosaic, but then I decided to throw the allomantic symbol for Steel into it. I thought it fitting not only for the name of the book, Steelheart, but also for the fact that Deathpoint is standing on it and doesn't care. Sort of like how he's robbing a bank in Steelheart's city and doesn't care. Yet.

Fanart based on the prologue of Steelheart. Done in Photoshop and SAI. In the story, Steelheart bursts into the bank, and starts threatening the other Epic, Deathpoint. I liked the dramatic image presented by Steelheart's statuesque frame intimidating the much-smaller Deathpoint. When the viewpoint character, David, describes Deathpoint's sunglasses clattering to the floor, I knew I wanted to try to capture that tension by framing the image in the reflection of the lenses as they lay in a pile of one of the victim's ashes.

This was inspired by the "Later that night, he performed the Great Transfersion, an awesome display of power by which he transformed most of Chicago—buildings, vehicles, streets— into steel. That included a large portion of Lake Michigan, which became a glassy expanse of black metal. It was there that he built his palace," portion of Steelheart's prologue. Before Steelheart built his palace on the lake, I'm sure at least one person tried to go skating on it.

It's a new year, and it's time for some new news. There's that A Memory of Light thing (you know the one), but we also have Steelheart and The Rithmatist coming out in 2013, and we have some exciting things for both projects. First up, Steelheart, the superhero novel. Entertainment Weekly has revealed its cover, which you can see to the right. There is also a freaking awesome plot summary: Yeah, so okay, I don't know about you but now I'm ludicrously excited for Steelheart. Next up, The Rithmatist. We've previously talked about how the Rithmatist is awesome, but now you can experience it for yourself, as Tor reveals the prologue and first chapter of the book. Just read that prologue and tell us you aren't stoked. 2013 is going to be an awesome year.
