  1. From the album: All Spren with Descriptions

So much gray, red, and blue. Purple and green are underrepresented.
  2. Shardpenguin

    Spren

From the album: All Spren with Descriptions

Much harder to tell what they are without color.. so many orbs, ribbons, and smoke
  3. Roshar is full of spren drawn by emotions and mental states. They are harmless outside of Shadesmar. They are, however, quite revealing. "I am not afraid" is kind of ridiculous while you are surrounded by fearspren. So, how do they deal with it? Is it polite to ignore somebody's spren? Are Rosharans unusually open about their emotions? And how do they play poker?
  4. So, we know that in-world alive spren belive, that is impossible to resurrect deadeye spren, but we have other information. We also have case of Adolin, he is going to resurrect his blade, and question is when, not if (and this other wierd thing, because Edgedacers are granted with Blade on 3d Ideal, but Adolin have dead Blade allready, how this will work? He will speak 1st Ideal and he will be able to summon Blade in less and less heartbeats? Like 7 on 1st, 4 on 2nd, and 0 on 3d? BTW, I think he allready starts becoming Radiant. Durring fight against Thundrclast he took massive damage and was able to continue fighting). But when Adolin Resurrect Maya, spren and people will aknowledge that this is possible. Of course, Adolin has really close Connection with Maya, so close that he probably "rewrite" her old Connection with now-long-dead-Radiant. Maybe this can be also due Mayas nature, she is Culitvationspren, so can have bigger ability to grow and heal in time. Additionaly, it will be rally cool, that Maya will grant Adolin with Regrowth Surge, and he will use this to heal HER (if its possible of course). Anyway, not every Shardbearer has the same Connection with his Blade as Adolin has. For most, Shardblades are, simply, just blades. So to ressurect other Spren, we will need other solution. And maybe we have it. Possibility not available for ancient Radiants, even more, feared. Yep. Traitor. Odium Splinter with Will strong enough to break free. Sia-Anat. She can change Spren. And spren changed by her can restore some abilities - we saw this in Kholinar Oathgate. After Honors death, Oathgate spren are not allow to pass anyone in or out Shadesmar. But Kholinar Oathgate spren arent restricted, after Sia-Anat touch. We know also, that she has control over that changes, because Odium wants to kill Kal and co. with this Oathgate, but she choose to change spren other way. We know also that Sia-Anat children can bond with Humans, Glys is one of them afterall. This can be Sia-Anat proof of loyality and pure intentions. She may be able to remove part with Connection with dead Radiant from deadeye spren, leaving them changed, but with ability to form new Connection, and this new bond will heal Spren. And what Sia-Anat will have from this? Simply - more children. She seems to be really caring about them, what is.... wierd for Splinter of Hatered. We can also speculate that one who get this idea will be Renarin - simply because of Glys.
  5. Why are spren how they are? I mean, I don't associate a weird long-tongued hopping thing with anticipation. And why do they only appear on Roshar? (unless Seons are spren)
  6. Nahel bonded Spren can appear as any shape as long as it is metal, technically they could become a nail right? Could you perform hemalurgy with a spren? Perhaps that would affect the bond and give the radiant allomancy/feruchemy??
  7. What would giving Breath to spren result in? Breath is supposed to be more in the Physical than the Spiritual due to the nature of Endowment / to facilitate their transfer. Would the adaptability of Breath to different sDNA cause it to become more Cognitive in nature? Or would it make it easier for the spren to push into the Physical Realm and retain their coherence there? I assume that the rules of Awakening should still remain the same for them and they would still gain Heightenings if they acquire more Breaths, but would doing so change what kind of spren they are if they have more of Endowment's Investiture or would Endowment's nature mean her Investiture wouldn't change the inherent nature of the spren? If the spren was a Nahel Bond capable spren, would this count as Corruption assuming their nature does change? Would they still grant the same Surges? Could they grant the benefits of the Heightenings to their Bondmate? Seeing as the Nahel Bond is a melding of the Spiritwebs, to some degree, would transferring Breaths be easier between Bondmates or could a Bondmate use one another's Breath at the Fifth Ideal?
  8. I noticed a fair few people talking in the official radiant order quiz threads have been mixing their top two results into a "new" order, myself included. We know from WoBs that it's technically possible for a person to bond two Radiant spren, if highly unlikely to happen in practice. But can things be pushed a step further? Can two spren be mixed into a single entity? Well... Yes. They can be. Here's the WoB for it! So, Lightshapers, Winddancers, Windshapers, Elsebreakers, you guys COULD technically have a single spren for your merged orders. As to what this would do to the consciousness of the two spren, and what the actual method for merging them would be, I have no idea. Let's theorize that together!
  9. I want Brandon to release book 4 early since we're all stuck in various kinds of purgatory. Brandon unsurprisingly did not simply mail me draft #4. So I've decided to release all my best theories about the stormlight archive until he releases the book or sends me a t-shirt or something. It's not a great plan. Blackmail Theory #1: Lift's Gifts So Lift is everyone's favorite character. In a world filled with weird powers she stands out, not just a surgebinder but gifted by the nightwatcher to exist partly in the cognitive realm. Wyndle asks "But why? ... Why did she give you this incredible talent?" (WOR 708) We get one hint. The Stormfather meets Lift in a vision and rumbles "That woman! This is a creation specifically meant to defy my will!" and then adds "That child is tainted by the Nightwatcher" (OB 470). At first glance, I thought the Stormfather just hated eavesdropping but maybe... Lift can heal spren, perhaps with the help of someone prepared to reswear the oaths and bond the spren. I imagine her grafting Maya's soul onto Adolins. People have tried and failed to heal broken spren before. Lift is something new, she can touch them in both the cognitive and physical realms. The Stormfather has lost faith in humans. He doesn't wish for Spren and humans to bond again because he thinks humans will betray and kill them. Lift by healing the dead spren can mend the terrible hurt of the Recreance. Perhaps she can even help the mysterious sibling. The Nightwatcher chose Lift for this gift because she has the soul of an edgedancer and sent her to raise an army of radiants to stand against Odium.
  10. Hi all, this is my first ever forum post, glad to meet you all! Intro As the title suggests I believe that Willshapers are the ones that create shardplate for the Radiants, or at least I believe my theory is pretty solid. I've been thinking alot about the Willshapers lately and Kalak and from the brief descriptions we have, they seem to appear as very finicky tinkerers. So I basically picture Kalak as the Iron Man of the Heralds who designed the shardplates(maybe some 'Honorplate'). There has also been alot of speculation that shardplate is comprised of subspren and comments from Brandon Sanderson's Q & As and subspren appearing around certain characters(Dalinar, Kaladin & Jasnah) point to this. I also believe that Bondsmiths might play a part in this process, I get more into that later on. How I think it works Since the subspren aren't able to make nahel bonds, therefore only able to manifest in the physical realm for a brief period of time. I think these spren are so drawn to the Radiants and their increasing connection to their sapient cousins, but can't bound because of the laws in place. So Kalak, being the inquisitive airhead decides that if they have shardweapons why not make shardarmor from other spren since Radiants can only have one bond per sapient spren. I imagine that in order to make this happen, the Willshaper will blend their surges together like how Dalinar blended Cohesion and Adhesion to repair the ruins in Thaylen City and somehow bring the spren from Shadesmar into the Physical Realm and use Cohesion to reshape them into shardplate(perhaps involving some sort of Godmetal, not too sure I'm not all that knowledgeable on that topic). Now where does the Bondsmith come in? Well that's simple, they use Spiritual Adhesion to identity key the Plate to the Radiant. I also think maybe another way to look at it is that perhaps a Bondmsith would open a perpendicularity that might affect the process in a way or something? Here is further evidence to back my theory(some speculation): Dalinar was capable of using 'Spiritual Adhesion' to communicate with others of different languages. It would lend credence to their Order's name, perhaps how they even got it like Windrunners and Skybreakers are best known for their flight abilities but can do so much more. The radiants takes the subspren(Will) and shape it into the best form for the knight(Shaper) There's been a convenient lack of information on the Order and their Herald and I'm sure we all know our favourite author has a penchant for leaving omitting delicious information for the sake of storytelling. We know Venli is probably on her way to become one and how she interacts with Dalinar's Radiants could be a big thing in the fourth Stormlight book. In Taln's ramblings about the latest Desolation, he talks about training and leading armies, Jezrien teaching men leadership and Kalak teaching them to smith Bronze. Kalak was probably the Herald of Craftsmanship and this translated to his Order as well. Anyways let me know what you guys think, I'm not that knowledgeable on the magic system in Stormlight, so technical and complex but I still love it. Let me know what I got wrong, or missed out. Cheers!!!
  11. Its documented somewhere a lack of Spren in Shinova and most of us theorise the Shin have most of the lost shard blades and plates. If we're correct in assuming the Shin do indeed have these shards, im wondering if this corelates to the lack of Spren in Shin-land? E.g. In the cognitive realm Shinova is like the Spren Graveyard with hundreds if not thousands of dead eyes and the equivalent of shard plate dead eyes (if that's even a thing). So theres an unspoken anathema on Spren going to Shinova hence the lack of Spren..? Thoughts?
  12. So I have a suspicion about the identity of the elusive spren of the Radiant order of Truthwatchers. In Edgedancer (about a page into chapter six), Lift’s Cultivationspren, Wyndle, mentions a type of spren known as Keenspren. Context: Lift was talking with a young street urchin, using all kinds of very strange words in odd ways. After the urchin leaves, Wyndle says: “Mistress, that was the strangest conversation I’ve ever heard, and I once grew an entire garden for some keenspren.” Truthwatcher’s spren are described as looking like “light reflected onto a surface through a crystal.” And Glys, Renarin’s corrupted spren, looks like a crystalline snowflake growing up from Renarin’s back. Many of the examples of corrupted spren we’ve seen were still recognizable as the type of spren they were. Keen means sharp, either in mind or as an edge, like a blade. I think this correlates well with what we’ve heard of the spren’s appearance in addition to the traditional personality attributed to the order of Truthwatchers. I would love to hear other suspicions about the Truthwatcherspren. This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, so please share your thoughts on my theory!
  13. The title is pretty self explanatory. I want to know which was first, the Radiant spren or the Oaths. Now, we know that the spren created surgebinding trying to mimic the honorblades. We also know that the surgebinders later organized themselves into orders based on the heralds. Each order built their oaths on the virtues their chosen herald displayed. Now, this is where it gets interesting. The Oaths perfectly fit the characteristics of that orders spren, which perfectly fit the attributes of that orders herald. So, back to my original question, which was first, the Oath or the spren? If it was the spren then there are a couple of things that don't make sense. Why these particular spren? The Bondsmith spren make sense as they seem to be much larger then all the others, but why Ashspren but not Firespren? Also, it seems far too coincidental that the power the spren give and the ideals that they follow fit perfectly in with the heralds. Especially when Brandon has said you can in fact bond any spren, but the benefits of doing so would be less then that of a radiant spren. I think that the Oaths created the spren that we know today as radiant spren. I believe the ability to form the nahel bond strengthened a certain type of spren's intelligence. This would explain why some spren that you wouldn't think should be more intelligent then others are. Lets go back to the example of Ashspren. Ash doesn't seem to be a deeper idea or a more thought about concept, and yet ashspren have a higher intelligence then many other spren like rainspren or firespren. The creation of the Oaths and the orders of Radients by the Nahel bond would've granted the spren a higher intelligence and perhaps it also gave them more of an alignment with the oaths that they are bound to. This explains both why these spren are more intelligent and why they perfectly align with the heralds ideals and powers.
  14. I’ve been thinking about a few different facts and wondering if they could be connected There can only be 3 bondsmiths at a time. One, bound to the Stormfather which happens to be on Honor’s retinue. The second is the Nightwatcher which happens to be on Cultivation’s spectre. The third is the Sibling but shouldn’t it be tied to a Shard as well? What other Shard happens to be at Roshar? Could the Sibling be higly related to Odium? Even more, Hessi’s Mythica suggests we don’t know much about the 9th Unmade. Could it be the sibling? Maybe I’m seeing too much where there isnt nothing, but I thought it was worth the discussion
  15. Upon my re-reading of Words of Radiance something specifically stood out to me. How useful Pattern was to Shallan: he picks locks, translates dead languages, and breaks Ghostblood codes in seconds. So this got me thinking about a lesser discussed tool in a Knight Radiant's arsenal, their spren partner. So specifically, what are bonded spren capable of? To constrain this topic some, let's focus on their abilities in the physical realm. Additionally, there's a lot to talk about when it comes to shardblades, shardplate, surges, and the Nahel bond, but all of that could be many topics themselves. I'd like to collect examples of other things these spren can (or can't) do, and speculate on their utility. I've always wondered things like, how well could a spren be used to spy on others? How far can a spren stray from their bonded person? General Bonded Spren: Granting access to surges, becoming a living shardblade, and other perks of the Nahel Bond like plate and stormlight. Telepathic communication with their bonded person while a shardblade, possibly limited to when in contact. Extremely minor physical manipulation, Syl can carry a leaf with great effort, Pattern can push lock tumblers. Controlling who can hear and see them, most bonded spren seem to have a limited ability to hide themselves from others besides their bonded person. This is different than telepathy, Brandon says their voices could be picked up by a recorder. This may not work as well with people who are more connected to the cognitive realm, like singers and Rock. Sylphrena/Honorspren: Shapeshifting, Syl and Rua both show the ability to take a variety of forms, even multi-part forms like gusts of leaves. Sylblade can also take many different forms quickly, which while a property of all living shardblades might be assisted by her affinity for taking different forms. Flight, hovering, invisible 'platforms', gravitation?, Syl can stand on seemingly nonexistent platforms as well as fly at will. Not only can she fly, but she has no problem keeping up with Kaladin. Sometimes it seems like she's changing the direction that gravity affects her, but it's just as possible she's not constrained by gravity at all. Adhesion, Syl can use some sort of adhesion to play pranks on people like windspren. Storm sense, after the Weeping Syl knows when the next highstorm will arrive. Superhuman ability to spot or locate objects?, Syl helps multiple times to locate knobweed and corpses for the bridgemen. Appearance similar to a windspren, when people do see her, she's mistaken for a windspren, and she even uses this to hide from the voidspren in OB. Pattern/Cryptics Lack of ability to hide form and voice. Pattern can't seem to hide his presence like other bonded spren can, he can blend in to surfaces but can be spotted. This may be due to Shallan/Pattern's unique situation of oath regression? Pattern recognition, cryptography, computational power, Pattern translates the Dawnchant and breaks the Ghostblood code effortlessly, this may not be a factor of 'intelligence' so much as Cryptics thinking in a more 'computer-like' way, though it's also possible Pattern is just a particularly intelligent cryptic, as he is a scholar. Voice mimicry, Pattern shows the ability to eavesdrop and perfectly recreate what he hears like an audio recorder. Lockpicking, Pattern unlocks a door for Shallan, being able to fit into the lock, understand its workings, and manipulate the pins. Surface-limited movement, Pattern can crawl along floors or up walls, but he is mostly constrained to sticking to surfaces, though he has floated as a three dimensional figure briefly. The Stormfather There's almost too much unique about the Stormfather to get into in detail. He's a fairly large splinter of Honor and his cognitive shadow, whatever that entails. Telepathy, the Stormfather can speak into Dalinar's mind seemingly whenever. Though there may be interference in the communication when Dalinar thinks the Stormfather is ignoring him? If there's any sort of constraints on the distance between the Nahel bond pair on a planetary scale (not going off-world), it doesn't seem to matter for the Stormfather Knowledge, the Stormfather didn't seem to need to make a transition when he bonded Dalinar, so he kept all his memories and knowledge from before the bond. Wyndle/Cultivationspren Another unique situation due to Lift's weirdness. Would be nice to see another cultivationspren bonded to someone. Difficulty appearing to others, Wyndle says he has difficulty making himself seen or heard by others, though he is capable. Vine growth, while not capable of shapeshifting Wyndle can do a lot with the way his vines grow, but his movement could also leave a trail for someone able to see him since his vines need time to crystallize and disappear. Knowledge, Wyndle seems to have made the cognitive to physical transition without losing many of his memories and knowledge. Not that Lift makes much use of it. Size, may seem like a weird one, but aren't most Spren about hand to head sized? Admittedly how spren look doesn't seem to be very important, but it does help Lift use him as a footstool/ladder/whatever since she can physically interact with him. Timbre/Lightspren Yet another unique situation being bonded to a Listener could mean any number of things work differently. Flight, Timbre seems to be able to fly to move around. Can hide in Venli's gemheart, other spren can enter a Listener's gemheart, but it is notable that a bonded spren could. Might have to do with Listeners being 'more cognitive' though, could a human bonded spren enter a gemheart? Granting void-form control to Venli, no idea how this works, I guess Timbre can bully the related spren and somehow suppress them while they're in Venli's gemheart? Ivory/Inkspren Knowledge, like Wyndle, Ivory kept plenty of information after bonding to share with Jasnah. It's telling that Ivory and Jasnah as a team seem to be in the know about a lot. Size changing, can change his size but not his shape. I'd like to collect more examples from the books or WoBs about what these spren are capable of. Hopefully RoW can provide us with more examples of Knights in the same order, or just any sort of information on Spark, Timbre, or Szeth's elusive spren.
  16. So I was looking back through the scene where Shallan and gang is hunting the Midnight Essence and they come across that room covered in art, and I noticed something. Shallan says there are murals that depict 10 kinds of spren and guesses they're for each Order. There's just one small issue. There's 12 Radiant spren. The Bondsmiths have 3 unique spren. The passage in question with the relevant portion bolded. So what do y'all think? Is there a representation of just one of the Bondsmith spren? Is it an abstract representstion of the idea of a Bondsmith spren? Is this a writing error and there was supposed to be 9, with the glowing cloud, tree woman, and figure in front of a circle intended to be the Bondsmith spren? Perhaps the Bondsmiths were supposed to be unrepresented? I'm currently thinking either the second or third option, unsure though.
  17. i was thinking about this is wondering if it did happen what it would be like or if it would have any effect at all what you guys think i also wonder if the process of corruption in this case would be closer to a lesser spren or a living radiant spren
  18. The spren of Roshar are all some mix between Honor and Cultivation or Odium. The Odium spren look different from the normal spren showing that different shards have different spren. In Elantris it is never discovered how seons are created. This is likely because they are devotion spren and bond with the people on Sel similar to how high spren bond to people on Roshar. It is also mentioned that Seons are almost physical representations of "Gods love" (Devotion)
  19. Hello all. If this has been discussed before forgive the redundancy. So thinking about the Double Eye of the Almighty and of course the lines between the orders it occurred to me that if you removed the Bondsmiths and Truthwatchers you get a chart of something like this. I am interested in feedback and critiques. Thanks all. P.S. Please note the opposite corners.
  20. I'm currently reading The Way of Kings, and I'm wondering -- what do spren actually look like? Is it different for different types? I imagined while reading something similar to fireflies with different colors, but when reading about deathspren it was described differently. I also imagine Syl as a sort of typical fantasy fairy-looking character. Are there any illustrations or descriptions for reference that you find helpful?
  21. Why are Cryptics the spren of the Lightweavers? They are into deep universal truth. Yet they pick artists, who create stuff that is true on a personal level, but deeply personal and hence not objective truth. Naively thinking it seems to me that the Cryptics should be the Elsecaller spren and inkspren, as ink is about literature, should be the Lightweaver spren. Pattern states that he is on a suicide mission to learn stuff, not to promote their values or something. I propose that the orders are not characterized by the values of their spren, but by their deficiencies. That is, they seek to learn about the limitations of their strengths. The Cryptics wish to learn subjectivity as they already have objectivity. The inkspren seek truth, as they already have honesty, but no way to tell who is right in an honest disagreement. Wyndle knows how to grow things and nurture stuff. But a good breeder will propagate the strong and throw away the weak. He is looking for compassion. The Reachers already travel, but they are subordinate. They seek independence. The Highspren know justice, but they seek law. The Stormfather is on a journey to understand forgiveness for the sake of unity. Spren champion an order with related but decidedly different goals from themselves. What do you think?
  22. We just hear or read that glys is a truthwatch spren but we never hear what type he is. Like Syl is in regards a windrunner spren but she is actually an honorspren. So I would like to know your thoughts on this matter coz it's been on my mind for a while or maybe I just missed it
  23. At the very end of OB, Hoid retrieves the Cryptic that was about to bond with Elhokar. He says he thinks the reason he came to Kholinar may have been to find that spren. I find myself wondering what's so special about this particular spren? It's described as small and trembling, so clearly it's upset by having lost its Radiant. (Thanks fer nuthin', Moash.) But I don't get the impression that this is just a random act of kindness like him uniting the little orphaned girl with the woman who lost her baby. This feels like something that's meant to have a larger importance, and I'm curious if any Sharders have theories about why. Could this Cryptic be its species' equivalent of an Ancient Daughter, a spren that was made in an earlier era and might have knowledge about Aharietiam and/or the Recreance? Is it some sort of leader among the spren that could give whoever bonds it extra influence in Shadesmar? Something else?
