  1. Hello Fellow Theorists, **SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING STORMLIGHT INCLUDING PROLOGUE** I have a theory about who Odiums champion will be in SA5 - Gavilar. Now, hear me out. We see in the prologue that Gavilar is interacting with the 'stormfather'. My friend and I are both in agreement that is NOT the stormfather, simply based on the fact that the character in the prologue is nothing like the character bonded to Dalinar. We can be very confident Dals is the true stormfather given that he opens Honors perpendicularity. So, who is the fake stormfather? We believe it is Odium, or a servant of Odium, 'helping' Gavilar find the words to become a Herald. However, Szeth had other plans and ends Gavilars quest to be a Herald prematurely. I believe it is Odium due to when Gavilar says 'I NEED this' and 'stormfather' says 'Those are almost the words.' which implies to me that the correct words were 'I WANT this', playing into the weird permissions restrictions of shards as well as Odium viewing himself as Passion. My thought is this, assuming that was Odium (by that I mean him or his forces) then Gavilar would have had a decently strong Connection to Odium. We have seen that when a shard is Connected to someone, they can interject themselves at the time of death before the spirit fully moves to the Beyond. Im proposing that due to this Connection, Odium caught Gavilar before he was dead dead and convinced / tricked him into becoming a fused. Further evidence of this can be seen when Todium ascends, he mentions that he can see the contingencies that Rodium had put into place and knows how he is going to use them. I think Rodium was keeping fused Gavilar in his back pocket in the event that he did have to do the contest of champions, since that was not his first choice. I dont have much actual evidence for this, but I think that scene would be SO COOL. We know Dalinar has chosen himself....he shows up to the fighting ground, and his 'dead' brother is there to fight him for the fate of Roshar. That would play into the character arcs of Navani, Dalinar, and Jasnah. Each of these characters had many things left unsaid to Gavilar, and this would be the perfect opportunity to further explore those relationships. Especially since Navani spent so much time in Rhythm figuring out how to kill fused for good. Let me know what you all think!
  2. Spoilers for everything, or at least every Cosmere book that comes to mind as I write this. As far as I know, The Way of Kings Prime predates every Cosmere book except Elantris. As I've been reading it, lots of character arcs and occasional plot points have struck me as being the inspiration for similar bits in books outside of Roshar, especially Warbreaker and Mistborn. Starting from the most obvious, the name of Awakening and its association with sound (the Tones) were moved over to Warbreaker, while the rest of it was developed into soulcasting. Meren's sudden propulsion to the high nobility obviously bears some similarity to Kaladin during Words of Radiance, but his arc in Part 1 is much more like Vin's training to be a noblewoman in the first part of The Final Empire. Speaking of Vin, the politics from Shinri's and Jasnah's chapters are quite a lot like the ball politics in The Final Empire, which makes a lot of sense since that was the next thing Brandon wrote after The Way of Kings Prime. Shinri reminds me strongly of Siri in the first half of Warbreaker, especially with the unexpected marriage to the king at the start of Part 2. Granted, Ahven is opposite from Susebron in nearly every way, right down to being deaf instead of mute. Her shenanigans in Part 1, trying to figure out how her first betrothed died, are similar to Sarene in Elantris, although that one obviously came first. All three of these women have similar names, and I'm becoming convinced that the entirety of the Cosmere is an elaborate plan to make people like me look insane in front of our friends for perpetually mixing up characters with too-similar names. Taln seems to be a proto-Kelsier. His speech patterns, fighting style, and method of conniving read very much like Kelsier, and his co-opting of Meridas's troops in Part 2 is reminiscent of Kell's famous double motives with the rebellion in The Final Empire. I found this very off-putting at the start, since I was expecting someone a lot more stoic. But, to be fair, a noticeable majority of Brandon's early characters are on the "witty rogue" side of things. Ahven's conniving in the face of a siege is similar to the political A-plot of The Well of Ascension. Lhan, the monk, is almost an amalgamation of Lightsong and Llarimar. He is ostensibly and vocally lazy, but surprisingly effective and completely unwilling to see himself for who he is. Intara also falls into Lightsong's archetype, in a different way. He's a man who feels he doesn't deserve his station, but ends up doing many good things for other people by accident.
  3. IF, and that can be BIG IF, the Cosmere was to be made into a live action series and Brandon were to do a Stan Lee (RIP), who background characters from the series would you have him cameo as? Failing that; what scenario would you like him to pop up in and either narrate or give advice or generally laugh at? My example would be that on the afternoon commute back from work and the train conductor walked past and was the spitting image of Brandon Sanderson. Weirder thing was that I just got to the end train scene of Alloy of Law and was convinced I'd been an extra on the set but also worried I was about to blow up! I know that it is a long, long way away from even being thought about but it must be fun to speculate!
