  2. Sanderson fans, especially Skyward fans! I just submitted a Lego Ideas set featuring the DDF Poco from Skyward, based on the artwork by Ben McSweeney. If we can get 10,000 votes of support, Lego will consider making it into an official set. Supporting is free, you just have to make an account with Lego. (This prevents people from bot-farming votes for themselves.) Please consider supporting and/or passing this info to friends/groups who might be interested. How you can support this potential set: 1. Go to https://ideas.lego.com 2. Click “log in” link in top right and create an account. 3. Go to the Skyward submission at https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36f34d66-8aa5-4e82-a09b-af966300d379 (or search for poco or skyward) and/or have a look around and find additional projects that you like. You can vote to support as many submissions as you like. 4. On the Skyward submission, click on the yellow “support” button in the top right. That's it! You should have gotten a pop-up saying thank you and suggesting other projects with similar keywords.
  3. Publisher's Weekly has revealed the cover for Bastille vs. The Evil Librarians, the final entry in Brandon's Alcatraz series! Bastille is cowritten with Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas, and is due to release September 20th. Additionally, the print collection of said novellas is out, and Brandon and Janci shared a bit about what Skyward will look like going forwards. Additionally, their article contains release dates for the new editions of the previous books in the series, which are receiving new covers by Justin Gerard to celebrate Bastille finally coming out. (In case you missed it, the new cover for the first book in the series was revealed back in December!) May 3: Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarians July 5: The Scrivener’s Bones and The Knights of Crystallia August 20: The Shattered Lens September 20: The Dark Talent and Bastille And now, we venture skyward! Specifically the Skyward Flight collection released this week! If you've been waiting to buy these in print, you can find links to do so on Penguin Random House's website. It also includes a few sweeteners like character art and deleted scenes. Unfortunately, Skyward beta reader and Janci's friend Darci Cole was originally supposed to help write the next trilogy, but had to step down from the project for personal reasons. Janci and Brandon will both continue to be involved with it, however. Oh, did I not mention the next trilogy yet? Well, on the most recent stream, Janci and Brandon spoke about the plan for the future of the Cytoverse after Defiant (the fourth Skyward novel) releases next year. The current goal is to co-write a second trilogy following characters we already know (they can't confirm which, though we know from the Mini-Con that Kimmalyn is likely in the running). They intend for the books to be dual PoV, with one primary character getting major viewpoints in all of them, and a different second character getting their own plot and main viewpoints each time. However, this is subject to change, as they are still early in the outlining phase. Oh, and of course, we have progress bar updates from the latest Weekly Update video! The first draft of Stormlight Five is about 6% completed, which is about on-track for where Brandon expected it to be. The third draft (which takes into account beta reader feedback) of Secret Project 1 is about 80% completed, meaning prep work for publishing it next January can soon begin. Speaking of the Secret Projects, the Kickstarter raised $41,754,153 from 185,341 backers, easily taking the crown for most-funded Kickstarter with more than double the second place. (However, Exploding Kittens still has it, and every other project, handily beat for the most-backed position, with 219,382 backers.) Who do you think the next Skyward series's viewpoint characters will be? Why are there sharks in the sky on the Bastille cover? Is it just me, or does that airship look like Darth Vader? Find out... uh... whenever the books release, I suppose, but until then, share your guesses in the comments below!
  4. You've been waiting for a physical editions for the three Skyward Flight novellas that came out late last year, and today Skyward Flight: The Collection is out! You can get a hardcover or an ebook with all three of the novellas: Sunreach, ReDawn, and Evershore. The hardcover is just $20 on Amazon (and about the same price on Barnes and Noble), with the ebook at $12. You can also get a signed hardcover off Brandon's store, or get the Gollancz paperback off Book Depository. We found the Skyward Flight novellas to be a fantastic trilogy of stories, and an important part of the Skyward series. Janci Patterson co-wrote these with Brandon, and we felt she did an excellent job. These fill a big hole in the mainline novels, and if you like Skyward, absolutely pick these up. I liked this more than Cytonic too! ReDawn and Evershore are just incredible. I think it is best to read all these either before Cytonic, or directly after Cytonic. So really, at $12 or $20 dollars, you can't go wrong, especially because these three together are longer than any individual Skyward book! Lastly, Janci Patterson will be on a stream on Brandon's YouTube channel tonight, at the usual stream time 6pm Mountain time (5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern), which will go for two hours. You can put questions for the stream in this Reddit thread!
  5. I recently started playing around with Bricklink Studio. It's a really fun software to creatively build things with legos you don't even have! I searched to see if anyone had built M-Bot before and found this forum. The other build is definitely great, but I wanted to give it a go with Studio to see what I could come up with. This was probably too ambitious of a project to start with, but I learned a lot. Building from scratch with every single lego piece ever made as an option to use was a bit much. In the end I'm very happy with my "build" though. As with the other real build, the wings do sweep back and forward as you can see in the pictures. I hope you enjoy! I'm already thinking possible upgrades and how I would change it so I might post more pictures later.
  6. We are incredibly excited to have a special Shardcast where we got to talk to Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas: Sunreach, ReDawn, and Evershore! We talk to her about the process, Evershore, and a bit about future Skyward things she and Darci Cole will be working on after Defiant is out! She is completely lovely we had a blast chatting with her! This episode, we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Jess (LadyLameness), Veronica (Cheyenne Sedai), and of course, Janci Patterson, who is actually on our Discord (https://discord.gg/17thshard) as jancilynne! 7. Ironsides couldn't believe her eyes at the size of the Krell attack. She was used to the Krell rarely varying from their usual numbers when attacking- just enough to be a massive irritation but never so much as to truly wipe Alta off the map. She never had understood why; she was fairly certain the Krell had the numbers to do so. But the fleet of six ships she saw approaching made even less sense. The Krell had to know that the attack was futile. Ironsides smelled a trap, but the attack was still an attack. She radioed into the comm link of an available flight, one of her best. "Shard Flight, I need some fighters for an unusually small skirmish. Who's in?" Welcome to QF55: Battle of Traitors! I will be the GM for this game, and @Araris Valerian will be the IM. Here are the rules for this game, and they're also in doc form: Signups will end in a little over a week on Monday, August 23rd at 7:30AM, PST. The game will begin shortly afterwards with the normal rollover time of 8:00AM PST. I'll be gone camping some of the days during signups but will be back a few days before the game starts. For flavor purposes, this game takes place in an alternate version/timeline of Detritus, before the events of Skyward. RP Characters would benefit from a Callsign. 8. I have been thinking for some time now that Reconers seems like practice for era 3 Mistborn or modern Mistborn, and with the skyward series if that is practice for space age cosmere books. Rhythmatist also seems to be practice for era 3 Mistborn stories. From what I have heard era 3 Mistborn sounds like it will be a world with Superheros similar to Reconers and of Course Space travel in Space age Cosmere and Skyward seem way to on the nose. What do y'all think? Oh and I am more excited for Era 3 Mistborn than any more Stormlight books which, even though I enjoy virtually all his stories, far out weigh the non cosmere off shoots for me.
  9. Evershore, the third and final Skyward Flight novella, has been out since December 28th, and so we have to talk about it! Let's see how this concluded the novella story. It stars Jorgen, and it was a delight. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Ala (Rasarr), and Veronica (Cheyenne Sedai)! 10. This review is spoiler-free for Cytonic but does contain spoilers to the end of Starsight. I like Cytonic, the third Skyward novel, but didn't love it. The book does what it does well, but I expect Cytonic to be a divisive book, even moreso than Starsight was. In fact, if you didn't like that Starsight didn't have Skyward Flight characters, this book might be even worse for you. At the end of Starsight, we see Spensa hop into the mysterious nowhere, and well, that's exactly what we get in this book. It's another Spensa adventure in a new location, where we learn more things about the world and meet a bunch of characters. For those of you who really like Spensa and delving (heh) into cytonic, magic, and lore stuff, I think you could really love this book. I liked Cytonic pretty evenly throughout the book. Brandon makes it easy to get absorbed into the story, and I cruised through the novel quickly. The worldbuilding, as usual, is fascinating, and there new mysteries introduced as well as old mysteries getting solved in very satisfactory ways. In many respects, the worldbuilding is the highlight of this book, which really carried me through it rather than the characters or plot. Those of you who watched the Starsight Reactions episode and Brandon Beefs Shardcasts know that I really liked 95% of Starsight, but I had major issues with an aspect of the ending. I felt deflated and unexcited about the future of the series. Well, Brandon did it: he actually solved one of my huge issues with Starsight, which in my opinion was sorely needed. I am genuinely surprised he pulled it off considering how much I hated that last five percent of Starsight. There is a worldbuilding decision made that even though it made sense, it lowered the tension in most of the book, which made many combat sequences weaker because of it. I don't know about you, but I loved in Skyward the existential threat and danger I felt every time Skyward Flight lifted off. For much of this book, especially in its middle, I did not feel that, so combat sequences felt off without that tension. I think this lack of tension is this book's biggest flaw. Rarely did I feel like Spensa was in actual danger, so some moments that were supposed to be big deals did not land. But the other big flaw of the book is really baked into the core premise of the book: Spensa is in the nowhere, so it can feel somewhat like a sidequest. In that sidequest, there's another objective that feels like yet another sidequest, which we spend a good chunk of the book on. This, combined with the lowered tension for most of the book, is realistically the biggest flaw of the book. Along with that, we don't get to see a lot of old cast members. It's essentially the same issue you could have had in Starsight. I love the Skyward Flight crew a lot! The interplay with them and Spensa was fantastic in Skyward, and I did miss them in Starsight, which had a different crew who I liked, but didn't like as much as the old side characters. Well, there's new side characters here, and though I also liked them, it's hard for me to get particularly invested in them when each new book it seems like the old side characters aren't really in the next volume. Will I see these in the fourth and final book in the series? Maybe Brandon can pull it all together, perhaps, but I'm skeptical. Fortunately, if you miss the Skyward Flight characters, there's a solution: three Skyward Flight novellas! The first two, Sunreach and ReDawn, are already out, with the third, Evershore, coming out December 28th. They are ebook and audio-only for now but there will be a collection of all three novellas coming eventually. I do think these novellas are mandatory reading, because otherwise this series feels disjointed. The novellas and Cytonic complement each other fantastically. Love Spensa and M-Bot? Well you get a lot of that in Cytonic. Do you miss the other side characters? The Skyward Flight novellas give you loads of that. I actually think the plotting in the novellas is superior to Cytonic and as a whole, better than this book. So, that's a lot of complaining, but don't get me wrong, I did actually like Cytonic. It's hard to go into detail because the nowhere is so mysterious, and this is spoiler-free, so it's hard to not be vague. But really: the mysteries and lore in here are fantastic, and oh man, I loved the ending. I am a very ending focused reader, and it was by far the best part of the book. I felt that tension and dread again. It was intense and emotional, and makes me incredibly excited for the next book. Considering how after Starsight I wasn't sure if I'd even like the rest of the series, I must say, Cytonic did the legwork and I'm into this. In that respect, I suppose I have to rate Cytonic above Starsight, if I was ranking the books in the series. Your mileage may differ, however, since endings do really make or break a book for me. We will have our usual reactions Shardcast on Cytonic coming December 4th, and we will get into the spoilers and more specifics about this. Having many people on the show comment on the book will be interesting, because I said, I expect this book to be divisive and different people could feel vastly differently from my view. I'm so curious how you all will feel as well, so hit up our Cytonic spoiler board and our spoiler channel in our Discord server and let us know what you felt about the book.

  17. About last week, we got a cover for Evershore, the third Skyward Flight novella which comes out December 28th, and recently we got a cover for the Skyward Flight collection as well! Lastly, the Skyward Flight novella collection is coming out April 5th, 2022! The Evershore cover features Jorgen looking great, and the Skyward Flight collection features all three novella protagonists: FM, Alanik, and Jorgen. Both are by the usual Skyward cover artist, Charlie Bowater. We got the cover for the Skyward Flight collection from Amazon, and it wasn't clear whether the release date was confirmed--Amazon is notoriously bad with this--but literally as I was typing this, we got the official announcement that it actually April 5th, 2022. Fantastic timing. Really, the collection is a great value, because these "novellas" aren't exactly short. As a whole, I believe these will be longer than Cytonic (which comes out in just a few hours). There will also be bonus content in the collection, which according to an interview Brandon did with Elliot Brooks, will be some Skyward deleted scenes (it's at about 53 minutes in). So without any further blabbering, here are the covers: What do you think of the covers? Let us know below!
  18. Hi everyone! Cytonic, the third Skyward novel, comes out Tuesday, November 23rd, which is just hours away! You can buy the book on Amazon, Google Play, and more! We are changing when our spoiler channels on our Discord server and spoiler forums open up for the release. Previously, we set our spoiler period to begin at midnight Eastern time. Now we will set things to open at midnight GMT, which will be 4pm PDT and 7pm EDT for you Americans. This allows us to have some earlier timezones, who may get the book earlier than the U.S. to discuss it sooner, and we'll have a higher number of staff awake to help with the transition. Our Cytonic Spoiler Board is now visible, but will open for spoilery discussion at midnight GMT, so don't go into the spoiler board until you've finished the book! Cytonic discussion will be only allowed there until the spoiler period ends, which will be about three months now in February. Please make sure you do not have spoilers in topic titles, as you can see topic titles in a variety of places in the site. Also, as usual, we have a Full Book Reactions topic for you once you've finished. In addition, we will be retiring the Sunreach and ReDawn spoiler board, so you may discuss both of these novellas in the Cytonic spoiler board untagged if you wish. On the Coppermind, Cytonic content will be allowed starting also at midnight GMT, but you can use the Time Machine to look at what the wiki looked like prior to Cytonic.
  19. Why is the curse in the skyward world "scud"? Where did Brandon get this idea?
  20. Does the third Skyward Novella have a release date?
  21. ReDawn, the second of the Skyward Flight novellas came out on October 26th, and so we're here with another bonus Shardcast doing our reactions! It's not very "mini" of a mini-episode, but I guess under two hours is mini for us. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), Jessie (LadyLameness), and Marvin (Paleo)! 23. Brandon said that Skyward 3 will have two alternating POVs, but he didn’t say who would be joining Spin. I hope it’s Jorgen, but I think it’ll probably be Alanik or Brade.
  24. Anyone out there planning a reread before the releases of the novellas & Cytonic? Maybe we could plan to do certain chapters by certain dates & discuss. Regardless, I know I'll be rereading them since I need a refresh on the characters and plotlines.
  25. Switching off from cosmere things, let's talk about Skyward 3! It won't be called Nowhere, but we'll still make some jokes about it. There's plenty to discuss for what could possibly happen in this book, so check it out! This episode we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Shannon (Grey), and for the first time, Jessie (LadyLameness)! If you want to see our last episode on Skyward stuff, check out our Starsight Reactions podcast: https://youtu.be/N0wrSGZ0G_Y We also have some bonus content totally unrelated from the podcast, but there are Star Wars, MCU, and WandaVision talk that had nothing to do with this episode, and we cut it and put it on our Patreon. You can support us for as little as $1! https://www.patreon.com/17thshard For discussion, theories, games, and news, come to https://www.17thshard.com Come talk with us and the community on the 17th Shard Discord: https://discordapp.com/invite/bMAUS5c Want to learn more about the cosmere and more?
