  1. From the album: My Mistborn Stuff

*sigh* So as you can probably tell, the coloring... did not turn out. I liked the inked version much better, but here's the colored one too. A huge reason the coloring didn't turn out was because my grey marker is honestly dead and I don't know how I thought I could do Fuzz's robe without that. It just looks uneven. But, oh, well, at least Ati's gold turned out well. I'm glad I was able to draw this though, I suppose. Ruin and Preservation are some of my very favorites in Mistborn and my 11 year old self would be over-joyed to see this drawing.
  2. How many shards do you think it would take to kill Odium? He’s splintered so many shards (or been involved in splintering so many) that I’m wondering if he has bits of power from them? Would Harmony be able to defeat him? Autonomy perhaps? I know he is weakened to an extent because he’s stuck on Braise, but has he become, like, a super shard?
  3. This is probably a repeat question, but I'd like to start a thread on this...How is Odium so powerful? My understanding was, that when Adol(...) was shattered, each of the Splintered pieces of (him) were equally distributed? How is it that Odium has managed to Shatter so many other Shards? And one other thing...All the other Shards are...ideas? (Honor, Cultivation, Ruin, Preservation, etc). What is Odium? What does that even mean?
  4. I have not read Dawnshard nor played Magic the Gathering (MTG) but based on the WoB and the MTG Wiki we can group the shards into the following four categories: 1. Individualist: Autonomy, Ambition, Odium, Ruin. 2. Authoritarian: Honor, Preservation, Dominion, [Unknown Shard]. 3. Naturalist: Cultivation, Endowment, Devotion, [Unknown Shard]. 4. Rationalist: Wisdom, Ingenuity, [Unknown Shard], [Unknown Shard]. Odium and Autonomy are grouped with Ruin and Ambition based on the info on MTG Wiki, for example the Red-Black color combination is described as the most individualistic in the game. Red is about passion and chaos but large parts of the entry on black match Odium nearly perfectly. Dominion is easy to place, as is Devotion (Green in MTG is described as the least confrontational of colors).
  5. You know about how Odium shattered Devotion, Ambition, Dominion and Honor and how he didn't want to absorb them. Say though, if Rayse was like Sazed, and did get two shards, what would the mix name be? (Ruin and Preservation = Harmony)
  6. Out of all the known worldhoppers, which shardworld have the majority of them been born on. My first thought turns to Nalthis, but I feel like I'm missing something.
  7. A few coppermind quotes for context- "He is responsible for the deaths of at least four Shards -- Devotion, Dominion, Ambition and Honor." "Many of his splinters, the Unmade, represent giving into the sensations with nothing to rein them in" I was wondering- how exactly would Odium change if he absorbed some of the shards? Like devotion, or ambition? Besides becoming more powerful, he would be affected by the new shards, but couldn't he manipulate them? Devotion to his cause, ambition to succeed? Or does he just want to stay as pure hatred?
  8. Theory: The four Allomantic quadrants correlate to the Dawnshard quadrants, and the Shardic groupings. I mean: four groups of four for a total of sixteen? Where else have we seen that? Do the Shard groups have internal and external Shards? Pushing and pulling? If Cultivation, Endowment and Ruin are three parts of the ‘Change’ group, then there’s a very good argument for it. E internal; R & C external. R pulling; E & C pushing. I think this group would probably match the physical quadrant. The other likely possible threesome is Honor, Devotion and Dominion. H & De would be internal; Do would be external. H would be pulling and De would be pushing. I’m not sure whether Do would be pulling or pushing. They’d correspond to the Spiritual/ Enhancement quadrant. This grouping would have a Dawnshard about bonds. Unity? I think Ambition and Autonomy are together. If Odium is telling the truth about being ‘Passion’ then it goes here too. Assuming they form a three parts of four: Am & O are internal; Au is external. Am is pulling and O & Au are pushing. This group would probably correlate to the Cognitive/Mental group. This Dawnshard probably has something to do with drive or will. Preservation would be the only known member of the fourth group (unless Odium is actually ‘Void’). P would be external pushing, and the quadrant would correlate to the Temporal/Hybrid group. This Dawnshard probably has something to do with existence/survival. (Possibly irrelevant, because of two feruchemical metals being swapped, but the Hybrid grouping of Feruchemy includes elements necessary for survival - air, food, health, and the will to survive.) If I’m right about all this, then: Change: Cultivation, Endowment, Ruin. Missing: Internal Pulling Shardic intent. Unify?: Honor, Devotion, Dominion. Missing: External Shardic intent; push/pull status unknown. Act?: Ambition, Autonomy, Odium? Missing: External Pulling Shardic intent. Survive?: Preservation. Missing: Internal pushing and pulling and External pulling. Note: I see Pulling as more active and Pushing as more passive. So Ruin ‘pulls’ things toward destruction, while Cultivation ‘pushes’ them to accomplish. I also think ‘pushing’ Shards may be better at seeing the future, but that that is further varied by intent. Thoughts?
  9. Please feel free to move or link this if it has already been addressed elsewhere. To the best of our knowledge, does Brandon intend to do different series for the remaining 6 unnamed Shards individually or are there WOB that indicate that he will be introducing them during “crossover novels”?
  10. Lately I have been wondering about why investiture is expressed the way it is(not sure if expression is the right way to say it honestly). As I have been re-reading the Stormlight's again in anticipation for Dawnshard and RoW I can't help but notice that there are 3 shards on Roshar ,well 2 shards and a splintered shard but regardless, and they all seem to express their investiture in relatively the same way, within the bounds of the 10 surges, a very Rosharen thing. However, when we jump over the end of the Wax and Wayne 3 we find out that Odium made a hemalurgic spike, and kandra-like creatures. Now, I know that other forms of investiture can be expressed on other planets as we have numerous examples of it from Hoid alone. But, does the planet or system guide investiture to be expressed in a certain way? Does this cause other expressions of investiture to be less efficient in that release of power? Like, is it easier for Odium to use hemalurgy and Kandra like things on Scadrial? I know my theory doesn't fit perfectly, but is there something there? Ruin and preservations expressions of investiture were constrained by the metals, and obviously feruchemy which is not tied to either shard is directly related to the metals. There is a similar pattern on all worlds in my opinion. Is it simply a matter of shards learning from each other and mimicking those in their near vicinity? I am doubting it, because to me it seems that it is highly related to working around the environment of the planet itself. On Roshar, spren and symbiotic relationships are part of the natural environment, therefore those wishing to partake in Honors(potentially cultivations) power must form bonds with spren. And this grants them the ability to become invested, but limited to within the bounds of the 10 surges. On Sel, it seemed that both Dominion and Devotion were related to symbology of some sort. Did Odium work within some of that symbology in order to splinter them? Without getting too much into the weeds, I guess my overarching question is just if there is something about the planet or system that constrains the shards to be expressed in certain ways. And if so, I assume it related to the planet because of what we know about Ashyn and the diseases that give investiture. But my theory is also muddled because we know most of Ashyn was destroyed by surgbinding. Either way, this makes me wonder if there is something more that we don't know about, inherent in the planets that Adonalsium made, that is strong enough to constrain the shards to act in certain ways? If anyone has more references to support or debunk this please share. I am relatively new here and realize that I am just a lowly squire in regards to these topics. I just couldn’t find any references when I looked it up, but I probably didn’t know where to look well enough.
  11. I. The Death Rattle The Coppermind has the following explanation for this Death Rattle: "This rattle apparently refers to the sixteen Shards of Adonalsium, three of which (Honor, Cultivation, and Odium) are invested in Roshar." But that is obviously wrong, Odium has not invested in Roshar, he refuses to invest anywhere because that would prevent him from pursuing and killing other shards. At present he is confined to Braize because of his pact with Honor. A much better explanation of the Death Rattle is that initially Honor, Cultivation and a third shard were the ones who had invested in Roshar. II. A New Shard Which shard could that be? A WoB from 2017: Since the entire Rosharan system was created by Adonalsium, Ingenuity would be a good fit, it would be naturally interested in an ingenious creation of Adonalsium. III. Fabrials The magic associated with Ingenuity would be fabrials. Moreover the current fabrials are imitations of Ingenuity's true fabrials which won't require enslaving spren. Ingenuity's magic is the creation of preprogrammed machines that run on investiture without the someone actively channelling the investiture. Basically Ingenuity allows for Automated Magic Machines also knowns as "AMM Machines" :)) IV. The Sibling The godspren of ingenuity is the Sibling (similar to Honor and Stormfather or Cultivation and Nightwatcher). The Knights Radiant have investiture from all three shards, Honor, Cultivation and Ingenuity. In particular if we set aside Bondsmiths the remaining nine orders are divided into three groups of three each dominated by one of the shards. In particular Willshapers and Dustbringers have more Ingenuity than Honor or Cultivation (and there is of course the idea that shardplates are themselves a type of fabrial). V. Leaving Roshar When Odium killed Honor, Ingenuity (a) was scared; (b) felt responsible; (c) was responsible; or (d) a combination of all three. So Ingenuity left Roshar which resulted in the Sibling slumbering (or maybe he deliberately turned it off). VI. Predictions RoW focuses on Willshapers (an order close to Ingenuity) and Navani is trying to awaken the Sibling while advancing fabrial sciences. I think this book will have a lot of information about Ingenuity here are some other predictions: Navani will awaken and bond with the Sibling making her the second Bondsmith. Remember the way to access a shard's invested art is related to their intent (for example you have to "ruin" something for hemalurgy). So you have to do something ingenious to get to ingenuity's magic and Navani with her ship is all set for that. Mirroring Frost's reply to Hoid in WoR we will either see a letter from Hoid to Ingenuity or Ingenuity's reply to Hoid (there are two ways to mirror). The Dawnshards will be related to Ingeniuty. VII. Odds and Ends I picked Willshapers and Dustbringers as close to Ingenuity because both orders are closely associated with engineering, logistics, building and infrastructure. I found it interesting that both the lightspren and the ashspren have the most negative view of the humans. This might be related to Ingenuity's role in Honor's fight with Odium. And here is my grouping of the Knights Radiant orders: Honor: Skybreakers, Windrunners, Elsecallers. Cultivation: Truthwatchers, Edgedancers, Lightweavers. Ingenuity: Willshapers, Dustbringers, Stonwards.
  12. So I just watched Brandon’s Live Signing Session from Thursday and just saw the part where he said that by ROW we’ll have all (or close to all) 16 shards canonized! This seems like a big reveal to me as we only have 11 or 12 IIRC! So then I wanted to start this thread to ask: do we have any new ones confirmed appearing in ROW/Dawnshard or if not how do you think we’ll get the new ones canonized and which ones will appear? Will Odium knowledge dump about the previous shards he’s killed? Will Khriss appear in ROW and spill some Realmatic knowledge? Kelsier? Do the Aimians know or is there something about the shards there? Will we learn something from the Shadesmar trip? And then also which new shards will there be? I personally support the theories for Ingenuity, Wisdom and Prudence. (I know there’s a similarity there but there’s a WoB somewhere talking about how there are two that are pretty close.) I’d love to hear any others we have confirmed appearing or any theories y’all have too! Edit: My personal theory is that as things continue to escalate Hoid corresponds with a few new shards and then a couple are dropped in randomly by say, the Ghostbloods or some spren in Shadesmar. I don’t think most of the new ones will be tremendously important, but I bet it’ll be just some little name drops. That does raise the question though: why canonize Shards (when he’s been reluctant to for so long) for something as simple as a random namedrop here and there. So I think it’s possible that either Odium discusses some shards he’s killed or maybe some shards get involved somehow? Even with that though I think there are WoBs to say that SA is about Odium, Cultivation and Honor so interference is unlikely, so yeah I’m interested to hear what y’all think it is! As far as new shards I’m way less sure, I tried to think through it mapping out the shards like the Allomantic Table and ended up with these: Change: Ruin (In, Push), Preservation (In, Pull), Preservation (Ex, Pull), Endowment (Ex, Push) Relationships: Honor (In, Pull), Autonomy (In, Push), Dominion (Ex, Pull), Devotion (Ex, Push) Feelings: Odium (Ex, Push), Anguish (Ex, Pull), Elation (In, Pull), Ataraxis (In, Push) Decisions: Ambition (Ex, Push), Ingenuity (Ex, Pull) Wisdom (In, Push), Prudence (In, Pull) Tbh, a lot of those feel like reaches so I don’t think I have a lot of this table right but I do agree with Prudence, Wisdom, Ingenuity and Anguish as new Shards! Excited to hear y’all theories!
  13. So Ruin&Preservation was just some weird opposites attract thing where one can't just be alone without the other interfering so that makes sense. Honor&Cultivation settled together because they're romantically involved so that one is quite obvious. However how did Aona and Skai end up together settling on the same planet when the shards they held don't seem to gel well by concept ? Do you guys think it is personal like they personally know each other enough that they trust each other to settle together ? Are they previously romantically involved as well ( tho Sanderson did say they were just business partners of sort but I think I read some wob there was something more) ? Or after picking up the shards did with their warped personality both made a conscious agreed decision together as they foresaw they would work out well for their personal shard intents ? It feels like their settling on the same planet together like how two friends/strangers who have different personalities just decide to become roommates or something. Their case is a curious as if I think about it Dominion and Devotion sounds almost as disastrous as R&P. Any relevant wobs ? Speculations ? Thoughts
  14. Theres been a lot of speculation as to what would happen if all 16 combined. the prevailing theory is that when all 16 are joined it will recreate Adonalsium. i dont think thats the case at all Lets get some facts down: - Ado was shattered -when he was shattered, the chunks of his power were locked to a certain Intent -its possible there could’ve been a different number of Shards/Intents when Shattered, each Shard got equal power(or 1/16th of Ado’s total) Now the theory: I believe that, when Ado was alive, he had more Intents and each Intent didnt have a set amount of power(meaning that at any given time, Honor could have more investiture than Autonomy. or vice versa) when Shattered, his power was divided and locked into those 16 Intents. Each getting 6.25% of his power. if someone recombines all those, they’ll have all the investiture recombined, but thats not all Ado was. This “new Ado” will still be more limited, in that certain percentages of his power are locked into certain states now. I.e rather than having a random number of Intents with any given percentage of power in that Intent.(Like the “old Ado”) you now have a being thats power is locked to only 16 Intents and has a defined amount of power set to each Intent(like the new Ado would) So when someone recombines all 16, theyll be like a “Fractional but Whole” God(fractional in that they only have part of Ado’s Intents/potential, but Whole, in that theyll have all of his Investiture) Questioner I was just wondering if a Shard's intent can change over time without changing holders? Brandon Sanderson Without changing holders? The holder can have a slight effect on how the-- a big effect on how the intent is interpreted, but what the intent is stays the same. So it's gonna be filtered. The way it manifests can change, and you'll see that happening, but it is the same intent. When it was broken off, it took a certain thing with it. Salt Lake City ComicCon 2017 (Sept. 21, 2017) Eric If Adonalsium Shattered with intent, would he always Shatter with the same Shards? Brandon Sanderson It is plausible that it could've gone a different way. Eric So it could've been different Shards? Brandon Sanderson Yes, that's plausible. Words of Radiance Chicago signing (March 22, 2014)
  15. So I was thinking about it and I think I figured exactly how honor beat odium. But first my evidence; point 1: we see I Other series shards Have trouble interacting with those under the influence of another shard, granted these two shards were exact opposite but I think it likely this is true no matter what but the degree to which the shards oppose each other determines how much influence they can get in. point 2: so basically honor put part of his shard into odium at least enough to pass along some of his intent. That is why odium is Abe to be trapped there because of paths made by him potentially and why he has to follow the rules of a contest of champions if agreed to. Essentially he corrupted odium.
  16. So where is Autonomy exactly? I was going through the White Sand comics and there were faces in the sky. Not very subtle, that. But I remember reading WoBs and theories where Autonomy is the sun on the Dayside of the Taldain system. About how strange the entire Taldain planetary/stellar system was, why Taldain's Perpendicularity might be blocked (because it's in the Sun), how the lichen of the white sands recharge after being used for Sand Mastery, the Skycolors of Darkside (Shifting Colors in the comics), etc. Autonomy being the Sun made perfect sense, but there are also theories on her being Invested in the atmosphere, and some of those theories still work with that. So is Autonomy hiding in the sun or in the atmosphere? Did Brandon change his mind? Also, what's up with, what looks like an Avatar of her, appearing before Elorin? What's this about Scythe (Skathan in the comics, the Emperor of the Dynasty on Darkside) possibly being another Avatar of her? I've read the WoB on Patji about it being an Avatar of Autonomy formed of her Intent but not quite Splintered off her, and I understand that bit but why would Hoid leave the letter to him? Was access to Bavadin blocked at that point due to her closing off Taldain?
  17. Hi guys! I was wondering if there is a specific book in which the Shards(not the Blade/Plate) are explained? Because I just finished Oathbringer and a lot of forum topics mention things like Adonalsium and Shards and I was just wondering how everyone knows about this. If it is all just WoB(a term I've also just learned) I will just read the coppermind page, but if it is explained in a book I would rather read it there since I'm doing a big reread of Brandons books anyway! Thankss!
  18. When Preservation and Ruin were splintered, someone took it up again. My theory is that someone wil take up Honor. I think If someone does, it will either be Dalinar or Taln. Do you think this theory makes sense?
  19. A recent Discord discussion about the possible Shard Prudence prompts this post. Brandon said in October 2019 that “Prudence sounds an awful lot like a Shard name. That's some excellent theorizing there.” Prudence is not “Wisdom” or “Ingenuity,” other possible Shards whose names may even have been changed to Prudence. (To me, prudence is an aspect of wisdom, and ingenuity is something else altogether.) This post assumes Brandon settles on Prudence for its specific meaning. What kind of magic would Prudence offer? Ruin (entropy), Preservation (stasis), and Honor (voluntary bonds between people) provide the templates. Each name is an apt metaphor for the Shard’s underlying magic. Let’s start, then, with the dictionary definitions of prudence: Based on those definitions, we might style Prudence the “risk management” Shard. My speculations: 1. Magic users must exercise self-discipline as part of their Initiation. Balance and judgment will be key Cognitive components of the magic. 2. Prudence’s magic users must carefully manage their resources to use the magic effectively. 3. Prudence’s magic will be efficient, with little leakage and a high output-to-input ratio. 4. Prudence’s magic will involve the “accumulation of small advantages.” I envision a magic that builds on itself, turning each earned advantage into a better one. As metaphor, I see Prudence as a conservative blue chip banker, measuring the risks of taking action against the costs of the action. I contrast this with Endowment, whom I see as the “angel investor” that funds the fledgling Breaths market. More on Shard Intents
  20. Hi everyone, I'm new and excited to get started! So Hoid is not a shard, that's always made me think, what can he do. Hoid has an assortment of powers but I have a feeling we don't know of them all, for example Hoid is both a mistborn and a light weaver but when Yasna threatened him with a shard blade he said that he doubted it could kill him, but from what I know with only the powers he has, a shard blade would still be very deadly. So from what Hoid implied he is much more powerful then we know, so that raises a question what are those powers and also where would Hoid fall on the power scale, he would come up higher then a radiant and an allomancers for sure but would he be higher lower or equal to a shard? Could Hoid be more or just as powerful as Adonalsium?
  21. I don't often speculate on cosmeric lore but a thought came to me. We know (see WoB below) that the shattering did not have to happen in the precise way that we think of it having gone. We also know that numerology while a part of the comere and shard lore is not necessarily specific for every shard (see WoB below). While we don't know why this is the case I have a theory. Perhaps the numbers of specific shards relate to the different ways that the shattering might in theory have happened. To develop this perhaps as a result of the shattering these possible futures did not just go away. They stuck to quite possibly the shards who could have differently influenced the outcome.
  22. Having just finished Aether of Night earlier this morning I'm finally ready for this. Disclaimer: Booknerd is not responsible for your being imprisoned, accidentally imprisoning yourself, or being splintered by the prisoner/ army of food mystics. (If the food Mystics thing happens it's Hoid's fault) It should be noted by the reader that few Shards have every been captured and of the ones we know of(with the possible exception of Adonalsium) all have been accomplished by other Shards, and probably would best be used as a delay tactic than a permanent solution. Now to begin trapping a shard one must make a prison from their own power or Powers in the case of a tag team. One should note that power inequalities become skewed by prisons of this magnitude. Preservation was able to capture Ruin who at the time was more powerful as well as uncanotically in Aether of Night Decay was able to capture two shards at the same time. Warning in creating this prison you give your prisoner a huge advantage over you as can be seen by both Honor and Preservation being killed and Honor splintered by the shards they captured. Part two being inside a prison. Shardaic prisons vary but most tend to be designed to either seperate one's mind from their power, or push back on any attempt to use ones power. No prison is infallible however and all will eventually allow the prisoner some level of control over the outside world e.g. Ruin, Odium, and everyone in Aether of Night. Please note that escaping is incredibly time consuming so make sure you have a lifetime subscription to your favorite streaming service and thousands of rolls of toilet paper.
  23. I have a friend telling me that ultimately the cosmere is an overarching story of how one man (Hoid) goes on to become God by uniting all if the shards. He said it'll be similar to Harmony but on a larger scale. He also said that by collecting different types of investitures, this will ultimately allow him to re unite the shards into 1 vessel, himself. I've not been able to see or find anything to confirm or deny what he is telling me. Any help from you guys would be appreciated!
  24. In Elantris it is mentioned that all the religions focus on unity. Shu-Dereth achieves Unity by Obedience(Dominion). Shu-Korath is Unity by Love (Devotion). Shu-Keseg is Unity (Dominion and Devotion) Did anyone else follow this train of thought?
  25. Many posters have analyzed the WoB that says this. Here is the WoB again. I highlight the critical language. My interpretation follows. IMO, Adonalsium was “infinite” because his mind inhabited his soul and was co-extensive with it. (Adonalsium is an anagram for “a mind, a soul.”) Adonalsium was both “transcendent” – occupying the Spiritual Realm – and “immanent” – pervading the Physical Realm. Adonalsium’s spirit, mind, and body were one. Shards are slices of Adonalsium. The Vessels’ minds Connect to those slices – “The Connection is all there in the Spiritual Realm.” Vessel minds are not co-extensive with their slices the way Adonalsium was with the entire cosmere. Vessels don’t know the Physical Realm location of their Shard’s “assigned Investiture” and instead must search for it. IMO, that is the sense Vessels are “not infinite.”
