  1. At least a nonzero of you wanted this: an episode on Children of the Nameless, a novella Brandon wrote in the Magic: The Gathering universe, released for free last December. Is it any good? Turns out it's actually pretty good even if you don't know about Magic. We are going to talk about the plot as well as the lore. To that end we have a special guest Colton (coltonx9), a Sharder and long time listener who we brought in to educate us about Magic: The Gathering lore. We also have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), and Evgeni (Argent). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  2. This week, it isn't Shardcast, but ShardPLATEcast, because we're talking about Shardplate. We talk about all the details on how Shardplate works, its function, differences between the Radiant version and non-Radiant version. Of course, we hypothesize how one gets Plate and how that works. But wait, there's also Inception noises and Avengers references. Everything you could want, really. We just have three of us today: Eric (Chaos), Evgeni (Argent), and Ben (Overlord Jebus) who's mic is bad today because... well, you'll see. Grrrr. Yes, I know he sounds like crap in this.
  3. Today on Shardcast, we are SPOOOOOKY because we're talking about ghosts! COSMERE ghosts! That is to say, Cognitive Shadows. What are Cognitive Shadows? Where have we seen them? How does it work? Find out this and more! We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Joshua (jofwu). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  4. This week on Shardcast, we're talking about the time on Roshar after the Last Desolation. We talk about the Recreance, the False Desolation, and beyond! And of course, whether lurnips are related to curnips. Just what you wanted. We have Eric (Chaos), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl), and Joshua (jofwu). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  5. Continuing our series of episodes where we think "eh, we won't talk that much, we can fit it into one episode" is the History of Roshar. Yeah, okay, it's hilarious we could fit it into one episode, but we spent a lot more time on Rosharan prehistory than I expected! We get up through the Last Desolation this week, and we'll talk about after the Desolations and the Recreance next time. We have Eric (Chaos), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl), and Joshua (jofwu). (If you'd like to see my Desolation math spreadsheet, it's here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1prORC7cmaPfyzR3O6RBYT5NtZRDEsmu_rG10oRaSQOI/edit?usp=sharing) Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  6. Welcome to Shardcast! We're always on time, always on task, and as (almost) always, it's back to Skyward Tour Words of Brandon! This time we have: Robot Grace! Cognitive Mumbo Jumbo instead of just Spiritual Mumbo Jumbo! And actual WoBs on Skyward! What is this madness. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected] See you next week!
  7. This week on Shardcast, we continue to talk about Hemalurgy and the new Hemalurgy table. This time we talk about bind points and blood! Fun! But, I mean, it is Hemalurgy. "This chart needs more blood." - Eric. One last thing: Shardcast will now be moving to Friday releases (US timezones) from now on. My apologies! We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), David (Windrunner), and Matt (Comatose). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected] See you next week!
  8. The Hero of Ages leatherbound came out just after New Year's, and with it, the long-awaited Table of Hemalurgic Metals! We now bring you the finest group of pedants to discuss all of the new powers, and more! In fact we talked so much (over three hours!) that we split this into two episodes. This first one we're exclusively talking about the Hemalurgic powers, but don't worry we're going to be talking about bind points and more next time. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), David (Windrunner), and Matt (Comatose). 3:20 - The Hemalurgy Table! 10:25 - The Temporal Quadrants 24:52 - The Spiritual Metals 1:07:10 - God Metals 1:27:11 - Who's That Cosmere Character! Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected] See you next week!
  9. Bored of Words of Brandon? Don't worry, we're here to spice it up this episode with: more Felt! Dragons! And, one of the craziest Words of Brandon yet. (Go to 1:00:33 for the start of it.) Also this features arguing about Sleepless, what the singers are called, and even more PedantiCast action that you (maybe?) want. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  10. On this totally on time episode of Shardcast, Eric screwed up recording so he can't put Words of Brandon on screen. Production value! But, we do get some cool stuff with Voidlight. Also, space whales, the Super Cannon, and the UnBae'd. And, lastly, Eric freaks out about the Lord Ruler's children, as usual. This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Shannon (Grey). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected]
  11. Merry Christmas, everyone! This week we are beginning catching up on Words of Brandon, and we're starting with the Skyward AMAs. So you know what that means: it is time for Shardcast to misread/make fun of people's Reddit usernames! Also, we have Words of Brandon on screen for those of you watching on video! Look at that production value! There's a new working title for Stormlight 4, us arguing over Hemalurgy, and more! Our cast today is Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Joshua (jofwu). Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected] See you next week for more WoBs!
  12. State of Sanderson 2018 is out and here is our podcast talking about the news, Children of the Nameless, and the future for Brandon. We discuss the increasing trend for collabs in Brandon's works. We also talk about our feelings on this year. We have some fantastic memes, and learn Evgeni is sometimes creepy. Lastly talk about Tolkien for no reason, and as usual, are super pedantic. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Ben (Overexposed Jebus). Thank you all for watching this year. This episode really made me think about how much time has past since a year ago. It is incredibly humbling for so many of you watching week after week. We'll see you here for many years to come.
  13. This week on Shardcast we are returning to Skyward, and we're here to do our predictions for the sequel of Skyward, Starsight! We also get in-depth on the lore of the Skyward Universe. Of course, we additionally discuss... Pacific Rim? Guardians of the Galaxy? Yeah, we talk about a lot here. This episode features probably our longest Who's That Cosmere Character yet, because we're dumb sometimes. Our cast today is Eric (Callsign: Chaos), Ian (Callsign: WeiryWriter), Grace (Callsign: thegatorgirl), Ben (Callsign: Overlord Jebus), and Shannon (Callsign: Grey). Our Skyward reactions are here: https://www.17thshard.com/news/shardcast/shardcast-skyward-reactions-on-video-r453/
  14. This week on Shardcast, you learn perhaps way, way too much about us. We're talking about our biggest crushes in the cosmere; our baes, our beefcakes, regardless of how irrational they may be. I almost spat out water. We also discuss the pronunciation of "duchy" and try to kick each other from the call. Who is your biggest cosmere crush? Comment below! Our cast is Eric (Chaos, also Ba-Ado-Mishram's lover), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Alyx (FeatherWriter, who likes manipulative relationships apparently). Send your Who's That Cosmere Character to [email protected]!
  15. This week on this Thanksgiving's Day Shardcast, it's time for us to dig into pronouncing so many things in the cosmere. Friendships will be shattered on this episode (just like perhaps your family arguments will today!). We actually will have each word we are pronouncing displayed on screen so you can see all the action, and then watch our reactions as people do... interesting things. Put how dumb we are at pronouncing things in the comments, snootiness fully allowed! Our cast today is Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Alyx (FeatherWriter), Ben (Overlagged Jebus who's camera setup was really, really bad), and Mi'chelle (firstRainbowRose, who's pronunciation is legendarily bad). Also featuring Dalish, Alyx's cat, and also, Flareon. Shardcast is the premier podcast on Brandon's works, Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and all of the cosmere, run by the mega-fans at 17th Shard. We strive for high-quality discussion and analysis and accuracy, but if we missed something, we're sure you'll comment below!
  16. This time on Shardcast, not only are we talking about our Skyward reactions (short answer: it was really good), but also we are on VIDEO for the first time. So please, comment below on our ugly/extremely attractive mugs, the quality of video editing, and anything else. I'm very new to editing! All future Shardcasts will be on video, but the audio only version will always be available on Soundcloud and the RSS feed as usual. I think you get a lot out of video in this one, from seeing Grace's deep love for Jorgen, and me looking completely perplexed at something Ben says about the ending. Oh, and make sure you stick around for Who's That Cosmere Character, especially this time. Our cast today is Eric (Callsign: Chaos), Ian (Callsign: WeiryWriter), Grace (Callsign: thegatorgirl), Ben (Callsign: Overlord Jebus), and Shannon (Callsign: Grey). How'd you like Skyward? Are you a Fan-Fan? Tell us below!
  17. This week on Shardcast, we are discussing one of the mysterious figures in the cosmere: Frost, a real life cosmere dragon. We discuss the letters involving him, the Traveler, the Dragonsteel sample chapters, and the in-world Seventeenth Shard. Also, Pokemon and quantum mechanics. For some reason. Our cast today is Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Joshua (jofwu, who talks more this time!), and Grace (thegatorgirl).
  18. Today on Shardcast, there's yet more Words of Brandon, this time from the Legion release party, and boy do we have some real good ones. We get some actual, real-to-goodness confirmations about Nightblood, including some longstanding mysteries being discussed. It's exciting! This Word of Brandon episode is not one to miss. We also get upper and lower bounds on how many Desolations there are! Are you not entertained! Some theories are also destroyed in this one. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent, and head of Taln's fandom apparently), and joining late due to traffic is Ben (Jebus). We'll see you all next week for part two from the Legion release!
  19. It's the last bit of our "short," "surface-level," and "one-episode" series on the Kholins. We're finishing up Dalinar's family unit, and we have to talk about Adolin and Renarin and their family dynamics! And, of course, how it evolves after Dalinar's visit to the Valley or not. Guest starring: Kaves Kholin. This is also our 50th episode! How crazy is that? This week we have Eric (Chaos), Alyx (FeatherWriter), Shannon (Grey), and Joshua (jofwu). Don't worry, we'll have plenty more character discussion as we move along. We really did a criminally shallow look at things, and there's plenty more to do still. Next week, though, we're onto the Legion release Words of Brandon, and they are pretty spicy.
  20. We're back with Keeping Up With The Kholins, and this time we are talking about Dalinar's side of the family, and Dalinar's adult relationships, like Evi and Navani. It's a great wholesome experience except for all the horrible stuff. Nothing a bit of amnesia can't fix! Also, this episode features fantastic Shardcast Relationship Tips(tm), and literally the... best voice acting you'll ever hear. (Oh, there's also a lot of good character analysis.) We have Eric (Chaos, and best voice actor NA), Alyx (FeatherWriter), Shannon (Grey, and feels ash), and making his Shardcast debut is Joshua (jofwu) who unfortunately is on the podcast just to get steamrolled by Alyx and Shannon. But I think he did great, and you'll see him more! Next week, we will finish up Keeping Up With The Kholins with talking about Adolin and Renarin. This was supposed to be a surface level analysis, and here it took four episodes. Oops.
  21. We're wrapping up FanX Words of Brandon on Shardcast today. Perhaps most interesting is that Brandon said Navani will likely be the prologue character in Stormlight 4, and Gavilar in #5! We also get some discussion of Shardplate, some RAFOs on Dawnshards, and Hoid and his Lightweaving. We discuss end-positive and end-negative magics for... no discernable reason? We make some Star Wars memes and pitch an "amazing" fanfic idea. Lastly, Argent propositions Hoid. This one is a fun memey episode. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni ("Why do I keep thinking about females," I mean, Argent), and Ben (Overlord Jebus). Keeping Up With the Kholins returns next week and the week after, so don't worry!
  22. On today's Shardcast, we discuss the huge amount of things that Brandon has talked about in August and September events, in particular WorldCon and FanX Words of Brandon. There's so much to analyze that we are doing a second one of these next week, and then there will be Legion Words of Brandon soon too. This episode has some crazy bombs: a third storm, a Cultivationlight? What! There's a surprising amount of detailed questions on the kandra. And, of course, we have the classics, like the Everstorm and Gavilar's black sphere. There's Hoid stuff, Bloody Tan, and, of course, obviously, Jurassic Park jokes. Yes, we're 100% on task on this one. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and back from the dead is Ben (Overlord Jebus) who got married! We also completely wreck this week's Who's That Cosmere Character (55:30). It's incredible.
  23. With the release of Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, we thought we'd do a spoilery Shardcast episode where we discuss our feels. There are things to talk about Lies of the Beholder, and so we dig deep into it now! This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), the return of Evgeni (Argent) from World of Warcraft, and Grace (gatorgirl) whose microphone is somehow much worse despite the fact that she just moved and nothing else changed. It's a mystery. Want a spoiler free look at the third Legion book? Check out Grace's review
  24. After listening to the podcast a few weeks ago (the link is below), I thought of another possibility for the locations of the missing Shardblades. The Sons of Honor have already been mentioned I believe, but what if the Vorin Church itself is stockpiling old radiant blades? OK, to clarify, the whole church probably wouldn't be in on it. But what if some very high members or specific devotaries kept a stash hidden away? We know there are groups that want to return the power of the Church (yes, the Sons of Honor are kinda dumb but it is their goal) and that the church once tried to take over the world during the Hierocracy. What would really help a group that wants world dominance? Yup, Shardblades. Good supporting evidence for candidacy that I see: Big enough group that could potentially hide all these blades and keep them secret Influential enough to convince people to hand over Shardblades Has been around long enough to have plenty of time to accumulate blades Hierocracy supports idea that church would 1) have to at least have some blades to be a threat and 2) have a reason to gather as many blades as possible There is a lot we don't know about them, so plenty of room for surprise secrets (This is additional evidence that I forgot about until a couple days later. It is part of another post a few lines down, but I'll include it here as well.) We also know that Taln showed up to Kholinar with his Honorblade. By the time he got to the Shattered Plains it was switched with a normal blade. We can assume it wasn't switched on the way since Bordin would have noticed if it had been switched out. The most likely time to switch it out without being noticed would have been right after Taln arrives. Who would have had access to Taln right away? The ardents of the Vorin Church who take care of madmen. If they did switch it out they used a Shardblade that there was no record of, which supports the idea that they could have a stockpile. Problems (and potential ways around them): If they had so many Shardblades during the Hierocracy, how were they defeated? (There may have been internal conflicts or they didn't have as many blades as they do currently) If there is a group in the Vorin Church that has Shardblades and wants power, they would probably be closely associated with the Sons of Honor. If this is the case, why wouldn't Amaram (a influential member) already have a Shardblade and instead need to murder a bunch of soldiers to get one? (Giving Amaram a Shardblade may have raised suspicions since the history of blades and plates is very closely tracked.) So what do you think? Likely option? I'm not 100% sold on this at all because we really have no idea at all, but I think there is enough evidence for it to at least be an option.
  25. We're continuing what was supposed to be a brief dive into Kholin family dynamics. Unfortunately we recorded for five hours about it, so "brief" didn't really come into it. Last time we discussed Gavilar and Navani's relationships, now we continue Gavilar's side of the family. We nerd out about how well Elhokar is written (so effectively a twerp), Aesudan conspiracy theories, and of course, Jasnah's amazingness. Check out last week's episode here: http://www.17thshard.com/news/shardcast/keeping-up-with-kholins-1/
