  1. What ability from The Stormlight Archive would you choose? Windrunning? Soulcasting? Shardblade? Shardplate?
  2. I have always wondered how adonalsium could be stronger than the individual shards. Each shard wilds the powers of creation and/or destruction, and wields the ability to transform matter into energy and vice versa. How could you be more powerful than that? It also seems to me that each shard draws on the same forces. I can see the ten surges in a mistborn, an elatrin(however you spell that), and an awakeners. This makes me think that the shards also share a common source. I propose that the reason adonalism is stronger is not due to the raw power, but the fact that it does not come with a corrupting intent which inevitably consumes the wielder. This makes adonalsium so much more versatile and applicable to a much broader range of situations. Essentially, I don't think that the power was divided, just the current wielder's persona. Am I making sense?
  3. Hello, Seventeenth Shard! I am here today to propose a theory (my first) that I have not been able to find explored anywhere on the site. I pray that you bear with me, as it is fairly long-winded, with extensive citations... Any Q&A citations can be found in the compilations elswhere in the forums. The shorthand I have used for the in-text notes are designed for any who wish to cross-reference in any format - I have included book and chapter (for those on e-book) as well as page numbers for both hardocver and mass-market paperback versions. I welcome your thoughts and feedback, and look forward to many further discussions within these hallowed halls. Theory The true villain of the Cosmere is known as the Void, and Odium is yet another in the line of “villains” that has been subverted from his original purpose/intent. Supporting Points Spren categorization Spren exist that are known splinters of Honor (eg. Syl), and they refer to themselves as honorspren. Citation: “I am honorspren. Spirit of oaths. Of promises. And of nobility.” (WoK, Ch. 67 / HC page 913 / MMP page 1139) Spren exist that are known to be of Cultivation (eg. Wyndle), but have not explicitly identified themselves as cultivationspren. Spren exist that are known as Voidspren, based both on recorded in-world knowledge and on the recognition of other spren. Citation: The various Voidspren, with their unseen lord – whose name changes depending on which culture we’re speaking of – evoke an enemy or antagonist. (WoR, Ch. 3 / HC page 71) Citation: “I am not a Voidspren,” Pattern said. (WoR, Ch. 81 / HC page 981) Citation: “Mmmm,” Pattern said softly. “They are raising a storm.” “The Voidspren?” Shallan whispered. “The bonded ones. They craft a storm.” (WoR, Ch. 81 / HC page 982) The existence of Voidspren has not been denied by WoB. Citation: Q: Can anyone other than a Parshendi bond a voidspren? Like, can a human bond a voidspren? A: That is theoretically possible but humans are not good at bonding spren in the same way. WoB indicates that spren exist that are of Odium (as well as Honor and Cultivation). Citation: Q: So I'm just gonna run with that right now. Is Surgebinding in general a melding of Honor and Odium ala Feruchemy being in some senses being not directly of Ruin or Preservation? A: Honor and Cultivation is what you mean? Um, there are spren of all three shards. And those spren can work within the bounds of the magic that has already been set up on Roshar. Key takeaway: Spren of Odium would be known as Odiumspren, not Voidspren – the Voidbringers and creators of the Everstorm are really agents of the Void. 2A) The Shattering of Adonalsium Adonalsium was shattered intentionally. Citation: Sir Read-a-Lot (Added to the Database) Q: Was Adonalsium shattered intentionally, and if so, was the intention malevolent? A: Yes, and RAFO Adonalsium may have shattered itself deliberately. Citation: Q: Did Adonalsium deliberately shatter itself? A: Hmmm, good question! RAFO! The resulting Shards could have been a different set of intents. Citation: Q: If Adonalsium shattered with intent, would he always shatter to the same shards? A: It is plausible that he could have gone a different way. Q: So it could've been different Shards? A: Yes, that's plausible. Hoid was present at the shattering of Adonalsium (per WoB) – regrettably, I cannot find the exact reference at the moment. Key takeaway: Adonalsium was shattered intentionally as a response to an opposing force – the Void – and Hoid was involved. The extent of his involvement will be explored in… 2B) The Letters and What They Reveal As has been documented elsewhere in the forums, the letters in the epigraphs of The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance were written between Hoid and a dragon (with Hoid writing the initial letter). Excerpts from the initial letter: Ati was once a kind and generous man, and you saw what became of him. Rayse, on the other hand, was among the most loathsome, crafty, and dangerous individuals I had ever met. (WoK, Ch. 18 / HC page 275 / MMP page 331) He holds the most frightening of and terrible of all of the Shards. Ponder on that for a time, you old reptile, and tell me if your insistence on nonintervention holds firm. Because I assure you, Rayse will not be similarly inhibited. (WoK, Ch. 19 / HC page 295 / MMP page 358) In case you have turned a blind eye to that disaster, know that Aona and Skai are both dead, and that which they held has been Splintered. Presumably to prevent anyone from rising up to challenge Rayse. (WoK, Ch. 22 / HC page 323 / MMP page 395) You have accused me of arrogance in my quest. You have accused me of perpetuating my grudge against Rayse and Bavadin. Both accusations are true. (WoK, Ch. 23 / HC page 337 / MMP page 413) Excerpts from the response letter: Is not the destruction we have wrought enough? The worlds you now tread bear the touch and design of Adonalsium. Our interference so far has brought nothing but pain. (WoR, Ch. 66 / HC page 777) Yes, I agree with everything you have said about Rayse, including the severe danger he presents. (WoR, Ch. 67 / HC page 785) Rayse is captive. He cannot leave the system he now inhabits. His destructive potential is, therefore, inhibited. (WoR, Ch. 69 / HC page 817) Whether this was Tanavast’s design or not, millennia have passed without Rayse taking the life of another of the sixteen. While I mourn for the great suffering Rayse has caused, I do not believe we could hope for a better outcome than this. (WoR, Ch. 70 / HC page 828) He bears the weight of God’s own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context. He is what we made him to be, old friend. And that is what he, unfortunately, wished to become. (WoR, Ch. 71 / HC page 840) Key takeaway: Both Hoid and the dragon that he is in correspondence with were present at the shattering, and had some input in the creation of the resulting Shards. The elements pointing to this conclusion are both found in the response letter – excerpts i. and v.. Bonus takeaway: I believe that the dragon is in fact a Shardholder, as Hoid would most likely be trying to recruit other eminently powerful entities in order to counter the actions of Odium. Why Odium is not the real villain Odium was created as the Shard of “divine hatred”, per the response letter (see quotation above). The intents of the Shards were determined as a response to a need (to counter the Void) (see WoB above). Odium / Rayse has Splintered three other Shards: Those held by Aona and Skai (see excerpt iii. of the initial letter above) Honor Citation: “I am the sliver of Him that remains. I saw His corpse, saw Him die when Odium murdered Him. And I… I fled. To continue as I always have. The piece of God left in this world, the winds that men must feel.” (WoR, Ch. 82 / HC page 991) Odium has suffered defeat frequently. Citation: “Vex Odium, convince him that he can lose, and appoint a champion. He will take that chance instead of risking defeat again, as he has suffered so often.” (WoR, Ch. 4 / HC page 76) Odium (Rayse) is currently held captive (see excerpt iii. of the response letter above). Hoid is afraid of Odium, but there are “many things” that he is scared of. Citation: Q: Is there anything Hoid was scared of? And if so, is it still around, and... A: There are many things that Hoid is scared of. He is really scared of Odium, but there are others. We have been led to believe certain individuals are the villains in each of Sanderson’s works, and are continually surprised. World - Expected Villain - True Villain Sel Hrathen Dilaf Scadrial Lord Ruler Ruin Nalthis Susebron IV Denth / Bluefingers Roshar Odium / Voidbringers ??? - The Void - ??? Key takeaway: If we know that Odium has been victorious every time he has gone up against another Shard, what defeats has he suffered “so often”? If this were referring to the Desolations, I feel he would be more likely to refer to it as being fought to an impasse, or a stalemate (due to the recurring nature of the conflicts) as opposed to a decisive defeat. This points to Odium contending with a more powerful force than any of the existing Shards – the Void. This would also indicate that his original purpose was to be the strong arm of the cosmere against its enemy, but over the millennia he has grown corrupted in his intent and turned upon the other Shards, possibly with the belief that his own power could grow if they were destroyed. Aside from the powerful Shards, Hoid would be terrified of whatever force was acting in opposition to Adonalsium.
  4. So you have been miraculously been chosen to take up a Shard's power for just one day when they go and have a vacation. What shard would it be and what would you do with it? I personal would be Preservation and then grant Brandon Sanderson the power to be a Bendalloy misting with a lot of bendally so he could finish all of the books in ALL of his sires. What about YOU?
  5. Forgive me if this rambles a bit. I wrote it between classes and figured I'd throw it out and let people comment on it before threshing it out. So I've been gone from this place for a few months, and upon my return I discovered that the Map of Roshar Question has been solved. That it is a rendering of a 3-dimentional projection of a 4-dimentional object. I also noted that Brandon had specifically requested this shape, and I had to ask myself, " what was the reason for that? Did he just like the shape or was there a deeper meaning?" This being the 17th shard, there is always a deeper meaning. So I betook myself to linking fancy unto fancy thinking what Brandon could have intended by this? It is most likely a clue, but a clue about what? Fractals? or 4-dimensional shapes? And this connected to an idea I had had some time ago. Let's say you had a 4-dimensional entity. Let's call this entity, oh, Figgledygrak, or something. Lets say it is a hypersphere, nicely balanced in all directions. Now you split it in half, you have two hemihyperspheres(!). These two pieces represent opposite halves of the space-- left-right, top-bottom etc. In 4-dimensions, if you split it accross all orthogonal axes you get 16 such pieces. If this space represents intent, you now have 16 pieces with varying degrees of opposing intent. You may see where this is going. [short version] Adonalsium was a being of 4-dimensional intent before it was shattered. The 16 shards each represent some combination of polarities of these dimensions. [/short version] If you accept this hypothesis, and I recognize its tenuity, then one question that springs to mind is, what might the axes be? We have some description and names for I think 8 of the 16 shards. We have some information. Odium seems opposed to all the shards we've seen so far. Honour and Cultivation seem less opposed. I'm not sure where Dominion and Devotion would fit. Preservation and ruin were obviously opposed. At the same time, they were enough alike to create a world together. One could hardly imagine Odium creating a world. To me, Odium represents the "negative" side of all the dimentions, Ruin is more negative than Preservation, Dominion is more negative than Devotion. If there's a pure opposite to Odium I'm not sure we've seen it. Devotion maybe?
  6. What would Sazedium do? How about Raysium? Tanavastium? Begin baseless speculation! Edit: If they were on Scadrial
  7. Premise Thank youTempus for providing a Good Theory Template. The accepted version of Events is that some person, power or thing Hit Adonalsium, and it Shattered into the 16 Shards of Adonalsium. I doubt this. Hypothesis The Shards were Broken off of Adonalsium One at a Time. Possibly in an attempt to Make Adonalsium a Better Power. Chronology of Known Shards Odium The First Desolation was between 9000 and 100,000 Rosharan Years ago.[1] This translates to about 9900 and 110000 Earth Years.[2] Unfortunately, we don’t have a Timeline for When Odium visited Sel. Honor and Cultivation Honor and Cultivation came To Roshar together,[3] and they were there long before Odium was there. [4] This means that there is a Significant amount of Time Before the First Desolation. Endowment Endowment has only Been actively Returning people on Nalthis for a little over 700 years.[5] Preservation and Ruin The well takes 1024 Years to Refill, and has been filled twice that we know of.[6] Preservation and Ruin came to Scadrial together, and Preservation imprisoned Ruin in the Well as soon as they finished with Creation. Since the second Refilling, there was a 302 year gap.[7] So they’ve been on Planet for 2350 Years. Devotion and Dominion The City of Elantris was created hundreds, if not Thousands of Years before the Events of the book.[8] Shu-Keseg, the Original Religion, was founded after the Splintering of Dominion and Devotion.[9] Unnamed/Unseen Shards The Traveller/Space Shard We have a Word of Brandon that stating that there is a Shard that isn’t on a Planet. This shard isn’t the Shard that wants to Survive.[10] Tempus has talked about this and guessed that a Shard could only Stand being UnInvested for about 500 years, before getting Bored. (Note that His words are taken completely out of Context.)[11] Bavadin’s Shard The Shard of White Sand I can’t really Talk about this Shards activities Without Spoilers for Unpublished Work, so Suffice it to Say, that Bavadin has been on World for at least half of a Millenium. Probably More. The Shard of Survival Well. It’s been Surviving. We can assume that it’s invested in a planet somewhere, due to Brandon’s Comment about the Traveller Shard.[12] The Shardholders It’s possible that not all of the Shardholders were Human, Which means that some of them could have had a Longer lifespan than Normal Humans. They were all from Yolen though. and They all Knew Each Other.[13] Conclusion All the Shards have been active for Different amounts of Times. But if they were all broken off of Adonalsium at the same Time, then they should be Equally Experienced. So they were Shattered at different Times. Conjecture/Speculation Here’s What I think happened. Adonalsium was a Power on Yolen, Rayse, being a Crafty and Dangerous man, figured out how to Shatter Bits of it’s Power. He Broke off the Shard of Odium, took it up, and Left Yolen. The other 15, as well as Hoid, Figured out how he did this, and decided to Replicate it, to Spread out throughout the Cosmere. Aona and Skai both took up Shards, and headed off to Sel. Tanavst, being In love and Honorable, insisted on his Girlfriend/Wife getting one. They left together, and eventually Settled on Roshar. After a While, Odium learns that Others Followed his Lead, and Shatters Dominion and Devotion, then heads to Roshar to do the Same to Honor and Cultivation. He kills Honor, but gets trapped by the Surges and Cultivation. The remaining 16 learned that The Power and Intent of the Shard could Change a Person, So they Gave Ruin to the Nicest Person they could, Ati, and paired him with a Shard that could Balance out his Power. Eventually Endowment Takes up her Shard and heads to Nalthis. The other 8 Shards were also taken up and some point, and they left Yolen as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Possibilities are that Aona and Skai got their Shards, and Adonalsium kept Breaking, leading the Shardholders Forcing Odium on Rayse out of fear of it Deveolping Sentencee or Corrupting a Better man, As Ruin did to Ati. Rayse Blamed this on Devotion and Dominon, and Killed them References
  8. Can you drop a shard? The first time we've seen a shard be passed is When Leras died, and Vin absorbed all of her Power, becoming Preservation. The second time, both Vin and Ati got killed, and Sazed took up both of their Powers. Eventually, the Shard molds people into following their Intent. Ati was a Nice guy, but became Ruinous. Why couldn't Ati have seen what was happening and just dropped the Shard for a While to Recover, then Picked it back up before it gained Sentience? If it's impossible to drop a Shard except by dieing, Couldn't the shards have been forced on People? Vin didn't want the Shard, she was going to Kill Marsh when it was forced upon her, she couldn't say no. What if some of the 16 Didn't want their shards? EDIT: Aether of Night is Non-Cannon, so Evidence from there will not be accepted. Just saying. Especially seeing as it can't be discusssed here.
  9. What would Hoid do if he had his own Shard? My personal theory is that he would create his own magic system based off of himself, called Scourgebinding. Instead of bonding with spren to gain powers, Scourgebinding involves bonding with articles of clothing. Thus, the Tights Radiant were born. (Hoid can be a very cruel person when he’s not trying to stop violent Shards.) Thievery: The Scourge of Skillful Kleptomania. Those with this scourge impulsively and expertly pickpocket anyone they meet. Bafflement: The Scourge of Utter Stupefaction. Those who use this scourge gain the ability to make all people nearby gawk at them in complete confusion. Annoyance: The Scourge of Obsessive Irritation. Those who have this scourge gain the ability to make all around them groan in pain, as they receive an eternal headache. Insanity: The Scourge of Incoherent Blather. Those with this scourge have the uncanny ability to cause others around them to back away in fear. Stalking: The Scourge of Alarming Pursuit. Those with this scourge become ultimate ninjas, capable of walking right behind people without being noticed, and instinctively knowing the location at which someone lives. Disguise: The Scourge of Surreptitious Sneakiness. Those who have earned this scourge have the ability to instantaneously grow any kind of mustache. Insufferable Conceit: The Scourge of Willful Snobbery. Those with this scourge have the ability to cause everyone they meet to instantly lose their respect for them. Insult: The Scourge of Offensive Heckling. Those with this scourge are granted the ability to break friendships, end relationships, and start battles in the most hilarious and ironic ways possible. Humor: The Scourge of Friendly Mocking. Those using this scourge can make all around them giggle stupidly, laugh obnoxiously, or chuckle incoherently. Wandering: The Scourge of Aimless Striding. Those with this scourge have the honorable ability to take the longest possible path to reach a destination, and to invariably get lost in the most straightforward places. First Ideal of the Tights Radiant: Novelty before Redundancy, Alias before truth, Goofiness before fashion. Windstunner: The Tights Radiant Order of Thievery and Bafflement. Windstunners were an order known for their underhanded methods of robbery. They would often act like total buffoons, attracting attention and causing complete confusion. Suddenly, they would strike down upon their foes, pickpocketing them and running away and laughing maniacally before their victims were able to come to their senses. The Windstunners also taught their own squires about the art of deceit. In truth, the Windstunners only recruited squires so that they could be pickpocketed. Windstunners are bonded to Beltspren. Second Ideal of the Windstunners: I will confound those who cannot confound themselves. Third Ideal of the Windstunners: I will confound even those I hate, so long as it is humorous. Sighbreaker: The Tights Radiant Order of Bafflement and Annoyance. The Sighbreakers were one of the most despicable orders of the Tights Radiant. They had numerous verbal spars with the Windstunners, because they believed that the Windstunners were using the Scourge of Thievery immoral. During these verbal battles, the Windstunners would often stealthily pickpocket the Sighbreakers. The Sighbreakers were named for the sighs of agony that come from anyone within audible range their Annoying drivel. Sighbreakers are bonded to Hatspren. Second Ideal of the Sighbreakers: I will put obnoxiousness before all else. Cussbringer: The Tights Radiant Order of Annoyance and Insanity. Cussbringers were a reckless order, often hanging at the edge of sanity (and cliffs). They were a particularly vicious order because of their combined use of the Scourge of Annoyance and Insanity. Whereas the Sighbreakers would eventually feel remorse for those they Annoyed, the Cussbringers were Insane; they would never shut up. The term “Cussbringers” was coined quickly, and the other orders, particularly those with the Scourge of Insult, would line up and systematically shout curses at unruly Cussbringers. Cussbringers are bonded with Sockspren. Hedgedancer: The Tights Radiant Order of Insanity and Stalking. The Hedgedancers were one of the most disconcerting orders, often found sneaking on top of hedges or atop roofs. As they had the Scourge of Stalking, they were impulsively compelled to follow and spy on those they felt were suspicious. Of the two orders with Scourge of Stalking, the Hedgedancers were by far the least sneaky and the clumsiest. They would try to attract as much attention to themselves as possible, but their Stalking ability also caused them to become impossible to see by those they were Stalking. Hedgedancers tended to find the highest places possible to Stalk their victims. Once they found their victim’s house, they would enter and their Insane Scourge would take over, forcing them to juggle fruits or stand on one foot or do other impractical things. The Hedgedancers are bonded to Glovespren. Second Ideal of the Hedgedancers: I will stalk those who think they have been forgotten. Truthstalker: The Tights Radiant Order of Stalking and Disguise. The Truthstalkers were the ultimate masters of ninja-ness. They could impersonate anyone and Stalk anyone they wished. The other orders used them as spies, informants, and pranksters. The Truthstalkers themselves wished to find out the truth behind human behavior. But after centuries of fruitless searching and Stalking, they realized that there are no truths behind human behavior; humans are completely irrational. Truthstalkers are bonded to Jacketspren. Fightweaver: The Tights Radiant Order of Disguise and Insufferable Conceit. The Fightweavers were a sly, conniving order who would spark fights and wars. With the Scourge of Disguise, they would imitate a random person nearby, and with the Scourge of Insufferable Conceit, they would provoke anger and jealousy into anyone who heard their words. Then, the Fightweaver would use Disguise to return to their normal self, and the mob would attack the person whom the Fightweaver was imitating. Due to their underhanded techniques, they were not well-liked by the other orders. The Fightweavers did not have any Ideals other than the First Ideal. Instead, their power grew as they started conflicts. Fightweavers are bonded with Scarfspren. Blame-Someone-Elsecaller: The Tights Radiant Order of Insufferable Conceit and Insult. The Blame-Someone-Elsecallers were known for accusing others for their crimes. They were the most provocative order of the Tights Radiant, shouting out Insults while simultaneously praising their own magnificence. The Blame-Someone-Elsecallers were often not successful in their attempts to blame others, so they hired Truthstalkers and Fightweavers to Disguise themselves as distractions. The Blame-Someone-Elsecallers are bonded to Vestspren. Witshaper: The Tights Radiant Order of Insult and Humor. The Witshapers were called the most holy of the orders, and they often had visions with the great and mighty Hoid. Through him, they learned the wittiest Insults and puns to torture their victims with. Speaking with a Witshaper was a great honor, as much as it was horrible and agonizing. The Witshapers instigated wars, baffled linguists, and tortured passers-by with their sleight of tongue. To keep up their reputation, they brought tall, foldable stools wherever they traveled. Once they reached a place they felt was important, they set down their stool and sat atop it, shouting down Insults at whomever was unfortunate enough to pass by. Witshapers are bonded to Cloakspren. Phonyward: The Tights Radiant Order of Humor and Wandering. The Phonywards were Wandering travelers who spread warmth and joy throughout the world. They used their Humor and made witty jokes to anyone they saw. They were constantly Wandering, and were a rather superfluous order since nobody could ever locate them unless they were not looking for them in the first place. The reason that the created such witty puns and Wandered constantly was that they were actually a very insecure order, and would search all their life for a place to fit in. They used their jokes and puns to cover up their insecurities, which is why they were known as the Phonywards. They are bonded to the reclusive Sandalspren. Bondbreaker The Tights Radiant Order of Wandering and Thievery. The Bondbreakers were an order of only three, because Hoid would never be so cruel to let more of them run rampant in the world. Actually, yes he would. But, in any event, there were only three Bondbreakers at any one time. It was up to the Bondbreakers to instigate rivalries and wars between the orders of the Tights Radiant. They Wandered about, finding other Tights Radiant members, and used Thievery to stealthily steal from them. The victims blamed the other orders, and wars broke out between orders. But the Bondbreakers’ work was never finished. Bondbreakers are bonded with Trouserspren. Second Ideal of the Bondbreakers: I will divide instead of unite. I will break men apart. …And meanwhile, Hoid will be sitting back in his Shardic castle, laughing at the foolish things the petty mortals attempt to do with this magic system.
  10. I apologize in advance if this theory has already been proposed by another. For a while, I've been confused by Hoid's statement in Words of Radiance. In chapter 67, he says: The idea of a soul being broken into pieces is reminiscent of the Shattering of Adonalsium. I've seen it suggested that this is because Hoid is Adonalsium, and can therefore be shattered. However, I've begun to consider it the other way. What if Adonalsium, and by extension its Shards, are souls? There's more to this absolutely crackpot theory than one quote and the general feeling that if I was Brandon, this is what I would do. (That is, of course, why I am not Brandon.) We have seen from Warbreaker that a piece of a shard can bonded to a human soul. This is what happens when a Returned Returns with a divine breath that is a Splinter of Endowment. Going further, we can postulate that when one takes up a Shard, what happens is that the person attaches their Spiritweb (and the controlling consciousness connected to it) to the massive Spiritweb of the shard. Thoughts?
  11. This might be crazy, but is it somehow possible that Vin is Cultivation? From WoB: Also: Also:
  12. I did a search, but I didn't find anything directly connected to this. Feel free to redirect me if I've missed something. We know of entities called Splinters--sapient fragments of one of the Shards of Adonalsium. We know of several varieties: Divine Breaths are Splinters of Endowment, Seons are believed to be Splinters of Devotion, Skaize of Dominion, and spren seem to be Splinters of Honor. I have been contemplating the possibility that Splinters, like the Shards they are derived from, possess Intents. A Shardic Intent is defined as the drive to act in accordance to the nature of a Shard. Thus, Ati was compelled to act according to Ruin's Intent, Tanavast was compelled to act according to Honor's Intent, and Rayse is compelled to act according to Odium's Intent. Each of the Shards has a purpose, and this purpose drives them to a certain type of behavior. The interesting thing is that Splinters behave in a way consistent with Intents as well--perhaps more specific Intents, but Intents nonetheless. Consider. When a Nalthian dies in a heroic way, a Divine Breath can inhabit his or her body and create a Returned. It is no secret that every Returned has a purpose for resurrection--every Returned comes back with an intent to perform a certain act. Seons stress the fact that they feel their purpose is to love and serve. This, to me, sounds like an example of entities acting according to Devotion's Intent. Transformative Cognitive entities (known locally as spren) also act according to Intents. Syl consistently keeps a firm stance about her status as an honorspren, constantly pushing Kaladin to act according to her own drive to behave honorably. Pattern is similarly fascinated by lies and truth, which could be related to an Intent towards honesty. And finally... Nightblood. Nightblood is considered a Splinter of Endowment, and he has the most conspicuous Intent of them all: destroying evil. So there. From my perspective, there do seem to be similarities in the ways Splinters act.. I don't know if there is a deliberate connection, or what it would entail if there was. But I thought it couldn't hurt to slam this observation on the table to be vivisected and analyzed in a cold, professional light. We're all professionals here, right?
  13. From Ym's Interlude in Words of Radiance, we learned a few things about Iriali religion. According to Ym, the "One" who knew everything became "many" (i.e. people) in order to experience everything. At first, it sounds like some sort of pantheism, perhaps suggesting that humans are merely a part of Adonalsium. But then when his young customer asked if the "One" was God, Ym said something that gave me pause: This sounded to me like the "many" only refers to the Iriali people, or the people who are part of the Long Trail, not to everyone in general. This makes it less likely (though admittedly not impossible) that "One" is Adonalsium. So now I'm wondering, what if "One" isn't Adonalsium per se, but a Shard of Adonalsium? *start of detailed, wild, and probably wrong hypothetical scenario* Imagine an Shard whose Intent is something like Experience, who secretly created a whole bunch of humans with Splinter souls (sort of like Endowment's Returned), made them look like mundane un-Invested humans who weren't Cosmere-aware, and planted them onto the Shardworld of an unsuspecting Shard. The original "Experience Splinter-humans" had no discernible Invested ability, and they weren't even immortal, but they were capable of mating with the local population, producing offspring that had the Innate Investiture of that Shardworld's Shard and a Splinter of Experience at the same time. And when those people died, Experience was able to absorb their Cognitive aspect (their experiences) and their Spiritual aspect, including the Innate Investiture from the other Shard, effectively stealing a tiny part of that Shard's power. Now, Experience's Shardholder knew that there were risks in holding too much of another Shard's power. For one, he wouldn't want the other Shard to get suspicious. Also, holding two different Shardic Intents might lead to balance problems (especially if the other Intent is opposed to Experience). Experience solved this problem by giving his people a strong sense of racial identity, starting with an easily distinguishable physical trait (golden hair), then later on with a shared mythology (the Seven Lands of the Long Trail) giving each of them a sense of Divine purpose. In this way, his people kept mostly to themselves, minimizing interracial relations. At some point, one of these Splinter-humans mated with an outsider and produced an offspring who grew up to learn how to travel to Shadesmar and to Worldhop. Not missing the opportunity to initiate the Long Trail, a group of Splinter-humans joined their Shadesmar-traveling half-brother in migrating to another planet: the Second Land. Thus, the Long Trail truly began. By the time they attained the Fourth Land (Roshar), they started calling themselves Iriali. Currently the other Shards are still unaware of what Experience has done, even as he now holds some of the power of at least four of them. Eventually (when his Splinters reach the Seventh Land?), he will have enough collective power to rival Odium (though perhaps not Harmony), although this power would have to be consolidated from all across the Cosmere. Theoretically, he will be able to create humans with a hybrid Innate Investiture from multiple Shards, which would make for some pretty powerful warriors. We could only pray that Experience is a good guy. *end of detailed, wild, and probably wrong hypothetical scenario*
  14. So I've been trying to figure out the other 8 shard names. I can't find a lot of my refrences, and All the Topics I found discussing this were dead. But I think I found One. First off, all the shard intents deal with Humanity. Odium hates, and is hated by H. Preservation Preserves H. So on, Secondly, I believe the that all the shards are paired, but not always with a shard from their planet. So Ruin and Presevation. Odium and Devotion. Dominion and Honor. Endowenment and ???. Cultivation and ???. So I was thinking, and decided to just ask my dad for Help. I asked "What's the opposite of To Cultivate?" And he replied, "To Neglect". Neglect. This works perfectly. To Cultivate is to Enhance, to make better. To Neglect is to Ignore. Brandon Sanderson has said before that there is a Shard that just wants to Survive. Neglect doesn't care about Humanity, it neglects them to survive. I don't think Neglect is the Right term, But I think it's close to the Intent. Side note: I aksed my dad what the Opposite of to Endow was, and he said "To Not Endow."
  15. Hi everybody, so now that Words of Radiance is out and im guessing everybody on here has already read it i wanted to make a thread about the third installment of the series. There was so much in the second book, Ghostbloods, epic fight scenes, the meeting between major characters and their growth as individuals, so much new info and hints of things to come. I just wanted to know what you are most looking forward to in the next book personally im looking forward to, Szeths past and his progress in the Skybreakers. Hoid and his road trip with Jasnah. The secret societies and their numerous plots. Axies and his various and inconvenient incarcerations. Finding out what that damnation code means!! The Unmade Kaladin finally bringing a girl home to meet his parents and the reunion between him Roshone and Laral. The whole point of this thread is just what you want and what you suspect will happen in the next book
  16. The quote that got me thinking about the Stormfather's identity was this: from when he was confronted with the idea of bonding to Dalinar. So What is a Sliver? source Does this mean that the Stormfather has held, or is the cognitive aspect of someone who has held part of the Honor Shard? Could this be connected to his Vorin association with Jezrien? If this is true, why did he hold the power, how did he gain access (Shardpool in the Horneater peaks?), and what did he change while he held it? Where was Tanavast when this happened? Was the Honor Shard shattered at the same time that Tanavast was killed? We also know that he is a spren of some kind as he forms a Nahel bond with Dalinar to form a Bondsmith. Were all ~three of them bonded to the Stormfather? Is the Nahel bond necessarily one-to-one? If so, how is he still alive assuming they are gone? Do spren only die if oaths are broken? Could one of the old Bondsmiths have held the power, and would that make the Stormfather a Sliver? I had intended to come up with a more concrete theory, but obviously have more questions than ideas. Hopefully this can help start a discussion some of you will find interesting!
  17. Inspiration for this idea goes to xbauks. So, everybody has been looking for the Shardpools of Roshar's splinters. But think about this. Within greatshells, gemhearts can be found. Gemhearts that grow very slowly and, though they renew, can be used up. These gemhearts can be used to do extremely powerful soulcasting. I think these gemhearts are a strange form of Shardpool. Perhaps they are Cultivations, since they seem to grow within creatures that have to age and live first. I don't know, all speculation. But I really like the idea that gemhearts are shardpools.
  18. Hey, what release schedule will the Stormlight Archive have? I heard it's a ten book series split in two? Will each book Take 4 years to come out? Just to clarify i'm not complaining i just want to know the rough estimate of how long it will take me to read the full series haha... Absolutely love it
  19. I've been thinking. In WoK, we encounter three foreigners in the Purelake, looking for Hoid. In Hoid's note, he is said to have laid a false trail for them to follow. Assuming these are the ones he laid the trail for, I have to ask the question; What is so important about the Purelake that the people of the 17th Shard would believe Hoid would spend time there? Just a question, I've got some theories, but nothing definite. The Purelake drains during Highstorms, right? That isn't exactly natural, so maybe it is draining to protect it's waters from being polluted by the Highstorms? Purelake. Maybe it -is- a Shardpool and as such, it is defending itself. Maybe it has something to do with the Keep Dalinar saw during his vision out in the Purelake? I don't know, but its some food for thought for all of you.
  20. First off, seeing as this is my first post on here, I'm not really sure if someone else has already expounded this (frankly fairly weakly conjectured) theory, so if they have, sorry about that. Anyway, both Shardblades and Hemalurgy work with Spiritwebs, yes? And we know that Shardblades create a bond with the Spiritweb. So what I was thinking is that maybe instead of simply creating a bond, Shardblades (the present-day versions, not Radiantblades), they work more like Hemalurgy and tear off a part of the Spiritweb to create said 'bond', something that could have changed after the Day of Recreance. It would explain why spren, or at least Syl, dislike the blades, as rather than them being representative of Odium or something like that, they are simply fundamentally broken.
  21. I had a thought in the bath today (strange how inspiration strikes so often in the bathroom... maybe I should try and spend more of my day there ) Forgive me if this post seems erratic and scatty, I've not got all my thoughts in order yet, so this probably won't flow too well. I'm re-reading Warbreaker, highlighting what I think are important sections re: the larger Cosmere as I go (yay kindle!) and I've just gotten to the point at which Lightsong turns away petitioners and gets into a discussion regarding his own religion with Larimar. Larimar tells him: The wording here I think is important, which I'll come back to, but also: we know when you cross over, your soul makes a stopover in the Cognitive realm. Makes me think this is relevant to future-perception magics generally. Now, Isomere has started a topic http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3286-the-focus-on-roshar-is-waveforms/'>here which I think needs some love. He proposes that magic on Roshar is based around the idea of waveforms. I think this has some mileage. It also has implications for crossovers. Why I hear you ask? Breath. With enough BioChromatic Breath, you can perceive perfect colour and pitch recognition. If magic on Roshar is based on waveforms, this immediately becomes relevant (as colour and sound are both a product of wavelength). I'm not sure exactly what implications this may have, but again, stick with me, I'm going to keep going. We also know, in a mostly unrelated way, that Hemalurgy (what? We're on Scadrial now? Stick with me, I promise this get attempt to get stitched together at the end!) can be used to steal many different magical (and mundane) properties. Why should this be? If Ruin created Hemalurgy, why can it be used to steal powers granted by other shards? Why does sDNA have to be able to be affected by another Shard in the first place? We often talk of 'Preservation's power' or 'Honour's power', as though these are completely removed from each other - as though the shattering of Adonalsium split the power of creation along these lines of intent. I now think differently. I think that whilst each Shard has their own unique Intent, they each have a measure of the exact same, universal, power of creation, but this is filtered through the 'lens' of the Shardic intent it's tied to. And we see the evidence of this in the fact that people all over the Cosmere have Hemalurgic bindpoints which those on Scadrial could never have known of, or that the Waveforms on Roshar could be easily interpreted by an Awakener of sufficient Heightening. I might even go so far as to suggest that an Awakener would have an easier time making sense of Allomantic Bronzepulses, or the 'rhythm' of the Dor. This may also go some way to help describe how Odium was able to alter things on Roshar so that he could influence events there - he doesn't need to change the nature of the inherent magics there, only to change the way in which the magic is interpreted (perhaps through altering sDNA, although I'm loathe to tough the topic of sDNA as I don't think we know enough about it yet). Looking back over this, I don't know that I've necessarily said anything that's not been said before... but it feels like a fresh revelation in my head. Does this sound right or wrong to anyone else? Would anyone like to add to this, tweak it, or contradict it? Go nuts! I'd love to know what you all think.
  22. This is a blatant ripoff of 's Really Bad Shard Ideas. Basically, this is where you put ideas that you thought were ridiculous at first, but didn't seem so bad when you thought through them. Or just good ideas I sorta found myself overthinking my submissions and ruining the lighthearted intent, so yeah. Why aren't you posting already? Go! EDIT: Fixing posty linky thingamaboberroos EDIT 2: Maybe now it'll work?
  23. The way shards are grouped, planet to planet, is extremely convenient, e. g Preservation and Ruin, Domination and Devotion, Honor and Cultivation and Odium, etc. I suppose the plot requires opposing or at least complementary powers, but is there something deeper to this? I theorize that certain groups of Shards were bound more closely after the Shattering, which is why they ended up on the worlds together like they did.
  24. Well, hello everyone and welcome to my post. I have been thinking for a while about what we know of one of the Roshar's magic systems known as "the old magic". For now, and basing on my faulty memory, what I remember so far is that: -The Nightwatcher uses the old magic to bless and curse at the same time those people who go to ask for something. -It is far on the east respect from Alezkar. -It's in the Valley, which is a concret place, but once in, we don't know if it moves through the territory, or it stands in a concret place. -When using the old magic, it puts something in you via rewriting your spiritweb or changing some physical/cognitive aspect of you. -It's said that the Nightwatcher is a spren. Well, I guess not much humas on Roshar could find a difference between a shardpool and a spren, but what is almost sure is that it isn't human nor voidish. Obviously, we haven't enough information to confirm anything, even including what BS said at the Spokane convention (thanks to those who were there and asked the questions), where he said that the Nightwatcher, the old magic and a shard are all related; but anyways, what has been in my head for a while felt in the right way due to this answer. So, my thoery is that: The Nightwatcher is cultivation's shardpool, or at least is strongely bonded to the shard. The old magic isn't a mystery magic system, it's only the shardholder of Cultivation acting as it's shard demands. It "cultivates" something inside of you, but as every MS has to have a limitation, the cultivation is a double side edge, cursing you at the same time of the blessing. How the curses work respect the blessings and the individual who asks for them, I don't know. It's also unknown why not everyone is able to find it, and I haven't anything consistent about it. Maybe I'm so much wrong or I have missed something important, but this is my theory. Some thoughts about it? P.S: If someone has had the same idea and posted it, I looked for it in the searcher and I didn't find anything. P.S2: Again, sorry for my deficient english.
  25. These ideas have come from this thread, and the original idea in that thread of gathering a piece of every shard was Darnam's. The question is... could someone (say... Hoid) make a splinter of Adonalsium if he gathered a piece of each Shard, and if so... what would he need to gather. At least two are givens as far as I am aware (Preservation and Ruin) but what of the other Shards we know? As we go I'll update this post with what we figure out or suggest. Preservation: A Lerasium bead Ruin: An Atium bead Devotion: Dominion: Endowment: The tears of Edgli? A divine breath? Honor: A gemheart? An honourspren? Odium: Cultivation:
