  1. I finally received my copy of Bands of Mourning today, having asked for information on Adonalsium (IN my copy of Firefight it was revealed that there was a failed plot to kill Adonalsium which failed) The Inscription reads: "Adonalsium shattered because he was killed." We now have confirmation that Adonalsium was a living being, and was male. It sounds as if there were several attempts on His life... What is the current info on the Weapon and the other plots? Can we start to tie things together? Particularly with M:SH revealing so much?
  2. I know we have a confirmed WoB already about this, but I love the subtle name dropping I just noticed in my read through of Volume 1! About 6 pages into Chapter 3 (frustrating since there are no page #'s!), at the bottom right page, Kenton is talking to the darksider party: Just one of those things that is nice world building to someone unaware of the Cosmere, but a great easter egg for those of us looking for tidbits!
  3. I had to study, therefore.... I was on the Brandon's Reddit. There I found this cool questions https://www.reddit.com/r/brandonsanderson/comments/5ge20y/brandon_book_signings_dos_and_donts/daukmq5/?context=3 A couple of them are quite interesting about Adonalsium both in his past and his future: EDIT: Personal Note: I don't understand the first RAFO, He told for a while where the original vessels came from. Therefore I think he RAFOed the Worldhopper part
  4. We keep seeing WoBs about what happens when you become too invested. You ultimately ascend to become the vessel of the shard whose investiture you hold so much of. That much is established... But it makes me wonder... What happens if you get enough investiture to ascend... But the current vessel of the shard is still alive? Now, we have technically seen such an occurrence, when Vin ascended and took Preservation from Kelsier. On the other hand... In my estimation, Kelsier wasn't really holding the shard to full capacity. I do not think his example really counts at all. But it still raises questions. What happens? Would the current shardholder be killed? Just like that? That sounds like a surprisingly easy way to kill a shardholder. Or would perhaps the would-be ascendant be killed? For anyone here who has read the traveller's gate triology... I can't help but think of what happened to someone when they tried to become an incarnation of a territory when that territory already had a living incarnation in the real world. It wasn't pretty. No matter which way you cut it, this kind of ascension has some serious implications. And while Sanderson has said more than once that holding lots of investiture is a way to ascend, his silence on what happens to the existing shardholder sticks out to me as significant... I wonder if we will see such an ascension down the road.
  5. With a Pandora's Box opened with the new information about Autonomy, it made me wonder something about the Vessel-Shard relationship. It doesn't make sense that an individual would ascend to Vesselship, only to hand the shard over to someone else - let alone this happening among a group of temporary Vessels. BUT, do we have any information on the plausibility of a plurality of Vessels holding the same shard? Vessel by committee if you will? I ask this because of the complexity of Autonomy's involvement in the cosmere - male/female manifestations, a multiplicity of personas, entire pantheons, etc. What do we know?
  6. This might be the most important of Cosmere topics. Now we understand that the different magics and peoples of the Cosmere are fascinating and amazing. But even more so are the entities that were never alive, yet have a personality and drive of their own. These Splinters are pockets of Shardic Power that develop a type of intelligence. It is apparent that these beings are critical to the overall narrative of the Cosmere, while some are likely the perpetrators of some of the greatest evils seen so far. What are these Splinters and how do you recognize one? Transcripts: I wish my father could have come to Roshar. Things that seemed mundane to others fascinated him to no end. The rocky hills and the crustaceous life that seems to make up this entire world are so different from the home I once knew. He would have written enough dissertations and filled enough sketchbooks to drown a man in the first week alone. He was odd, but he had a love of discovery, and visiting other worlds would have been a dream come true for him. And my brother…. He would have loved seeing all the different shapes spren come in. The spren are small spirit looking entities that appear around the planet. Forces and states of mind that normally too subtle to observe clearly are manifested visually making their study far easier to perform empirically. I believe that a spren is a physical representation of a cognitive entity. They are not physical in the sense that you can touch them, or that they have any sort of measurable mass. But they remind me of the simple minds that exist, attached to the objects in the Cognitive realm. However, these are not attached to any one object, rather they are bound to a purpose or intent. For instance, if one is provoked into anger, anger spren seem to be drawn out, and serve as a secondary indicator of the being’s intent. There are also Spren tied to more ecological forces, such as flame spren and river spren. I’ve even observed spren that seem to account for things unseen, such as wind spren and life spren. This aspect of spren and their natures yields promising potential in the fields of science and sociology. It must be far easier to consult or comfort someone when fear spren manifest their anxiety. In my personal journals I have been writing up my observations of the spren and their forms. My notes are far from professional and I doubt anyone but myself would be interested in these notations. I feel there must be some connection between the existence of spren and the High Storms which bring great rushing surges of Investiture. These cataclysmic storms occur most weeks if not multiple times a week. Such a rush of raging power must have metaphysical effects along with the violent weather phenomena that is the storm wall. Now while I would love to chat about spren all day, this letter is a particular note because I have a theory about what these spren actually are. You see they take up a form that is far too intelligent to be just a stray consciousness. Some of the larger spren are able to interact and mimic people, such as wind spren. They have an almost playful attitude towards life and have been known to play pranks on humans they encounter. No, there is something far greater at work here. As you know from my previous letter, I am now aware of the former existence of Adonalsium and of the shattering. These fractured Shards left and later developed a drive or fundamental nature to themselves. Shards are immense in scope and power. This power yields abilities that seem only limited to the imagination. In fact, we know from the “Words of Founding” that Shards have created life from their power. Now getting back to the topic at hand, these spren do not act like any animal I have ever come across. They seem to thrive on ideas and concepts of the human mind. By observing and often mimicking what they interact with, spren reveal that they have a core nature. They are drawn to some kid of theme or purpose. This tendency, to have and hold true to an idea or states of environment that reflects what they themselves are. In this way they remind me of matured Shards. As you recall, the Shards seem to have a compulsion to see out a particular ideal, usually summarized by the name they adopt. The spren seem to mimic this type of behavior and single-mindedness. I postulate, based on these observations that spren are little pockets of Shardic power. Unlike raw Investiture, which is simply harness-able energy, spren are power with a measured intelligence and will. They are like Splinters of a soul. It is easier to understand this position when you visit the Cognitive Realm. There the Spren seem far more complex, and even dangerous. There are whispers of larger spren that have intelligence and memories who live there. I hope to do more direct observing as soon as I have established myself with the peoples here. I have seen enough to recognizes that there is something nearly supernatural about these beings. It seems reasonable to assume that these spren are pieces of a greater whole. Splinters are entities of power that were never alive as a humanoid, but attain a level of… consciousness. This is where things are still a bit fuzzy. It cannot be denied that the spren are intelligent, at least in a broad sense. By contrast the Returned on Nalthis also carry with them a Splinter in the form of a divine breath. In fact, all breath might be considered a splinter since they are portions of a Shards power, but a Divine Breath is unique. Yet it must be asked, are the Returned a person brought back from death by infusing their soul with a splinter, or does the Splinter itself inherit the body of a dead person? The answer to this might simply be both, and for this particular argument the distinction is not important. What matters is that there is an intent behind both a spren and Divine Breath. I would then also guess from my studies that Seons could be considered Splinters. They are far more than just a symbol of Aon-dor, and they exemplify obedient intelligence with a profound memory and distinct personality. In this way they might be the most advance form of documented Splinter to date. However, there is a potential in the spren, and if the Nightwatch and Stormfather can be confirmed as massive spren, they might be the most powerful Splinters known to man. I am particularly intrigued by this Nightwatycher. There are rumors that she can grant requests that come with an associated boon. If this is more than a myth, the implications are… staggering. Regardless I plan to make the journey to see this being. I also hope to find a good location to watch a High Storm, hopefully I will be able to observe this Storm Father for myself. As I’ve pondered these findings, my thoughts turned to Scadreal. At first I couldn’t think of any beings or entities there that would count as Splinters. In fact, I still feel that Scadreal has never seen a Splinter according to the historical records that we have. Yet I pause at the thought of the Kandra. The shapeshifters are intelligent beings that once were mindless creatures. They gained their intelligence via the powers of two hemalergic spikes. This was when I made the connection between spikes and Splinters. This may be an unrelated correlation, but the similarities are strong, and only separated by scope. Most hemalergic spikes are simply a form of spiritual surgery, ripping one soul apart and splicing pieces of that soul into another person. But with the kandra, they grant actual consciousness as if they were a Splinter themselves. Perhaps they are. However, I abhor the thought of anyone performing an investigation. Any testing with Hemallergy will be destructive beyond the point of rationality. What troubles me are the whispers of these Voidbringers. On Roshar there are tales of monsters built of stone and darkness that once sought the destruction of all sentient life on this world. The rumors are whispers at best, but I have made several well informed connections. If my discoveries here are accurate and these void spren are actually real, then we are dealing with splinters that are openly hostile. My guess is that these spren move with an intent and were created purposefully by a destructive Shard. I see now why I was sent here, for history seems ripe to repeat itself. I wish to be absolutely wrong about this, but my gut feeling is that there is a great destruction coming. To you, I suggest the following caution. Should I prove right, and find that there are evil spren sent to do the work of a destructive shard, be sure to look for the patterns. These splinters seem to be mimics or replicas of what already exists here. This goes against all that I have observed on other worlds where the Shards manifest uniquely when exerting their respective Investiture powers. If this Dark one seeks to mimic his fellows, then his touch may be subtle. Look for the signs of madness or corruption of what already exists. Red eyes… perhaps this is another sign to watch for. There are reports that the people who wage war here have recently been seen with glowing red eyes. This might be the only reliable way to recognize the servants of this being. Then again, it is possible that there are multiple Shards attempting to cause upheaval and destruction. That thought alone sends a shiver up my spine. I will continue to look into these Void bringers, and there are more reports coming in all the time. Something inside me feels as if there is a great bell just beginning to toll the final hours of this place. The air almost hums with tension and I fear that someday this world will break. I hope your messengers can find me amidst what is to come. Perhaps I am wrong, but this seems all too familiar. I wish I had more time, but I am afraid… afraid that I will once again watch innocent lives be snuffed out. I don’t want to watch another world die. Elsric
  7. Adonalsium split into 16 shards which were taken up by 16 sapients. This indicates that Adonalsium was self aware. The definition of splinter is a self aware pice of a shard. But no shard has to our knowledge attained self awareness. This indicates 2 possibilities 1 there was always someone who took up the shard. Not leaving it enough time to attain self awareness 2 shards can't attain selfawareness because they are both too powerful and/or to powerless. If it is 1 can splinters be taken up before attainig self awareness (divine breath? )? Could it be that Adonalsium was taken up by a sapient. Has any shard attaind selfawareness?
  8. Since he is having to balance the divine Intents of Ruin and Preservation, constantly pulling him to do very opposite things, does anyone think that after a few thousand years this will wear him out? Imagine a deranged Stormfatherlike god that is orders of magnitude more powerful than Stormfather. Scary?
  9. In the WoA novel this epigraph transpires. Now I've just noticed the bit about Anticipation and how it fits in the text, sounding somewhat like a shard, so I thought that it was some nonsense already discussed and debunked on some forums yet after some surfing i found nothing on the topic. If this was indeed a new shard then in my mind it was somehow connected to the worldbringers, wordsingers, etc. groups. I'm curious what the scholars on this forum now about this, if it's relevant in any way or if it has been disused. "As the one who found Alendi, however, I became someone important. Foremost amongst the Wordbringers. There was a place for me in the lore of the Anticipation—I thought myself the Holy Witness, the prophet foretold to discover the Hero of Ages. Renouncing Alendi then would have been to renounce my new position, my acceptance, by the others. "
  10. A weird Scenario come to my mind an I want the other Sharder's opinions. What will happen if a Shard invested every bit of its power ? More in details I though about creating a whole planet and life in it. Of course for a Shard to running out of Investiture, the planet have to be huge, having many lifeforms and the lifeforms have to be high Invested (so Invested that, an Nalthis guy seems a Drab to them). It would be fashinating to imagine a world like that but my main point was. What will happen to the Shard and its Vessel ? Any Ideas ? Some outcomes that came to my mind are: - The Shard is so high spread that the Vessel in the end became a Sliver and lose the Shard. - Nothing happen but the raw power avaliable to the Shard is quite nothing PS: This idea come to my mind while reading the theory about Threnody as a memento for a dead shard. But it has moved away very quickly from that starting point.
  11. Just a heads up for all of you who have yet to read it, this deals with secret history content. So while Kelsier was discussing how preservation could be killed by ruin with Khriss and Nazh, Khriss expresses surprise that ruin does not simply splinter preservation. She wonders if ruin does not know how to splinter a shard, or if instead he simply lacks the power to. Instead, ruin appears to slowly strangle preservation, eventually killing Leras. We also know that ruin was quite anxious to gain access to the hoard of atium kept by the kandra, since this was the final piece of its power. So, to put it simply, does this mean that ruin would have used the splintering technique that we have seen odium use if it had managed to gain access to the atium?
  12. So I just at this moment had a though and wondering if it has merit. Could Adonalsium itself be a shard/splinter of something bigger. Mayhaps that "God Beyond". I'm wondering because the Cosmere takes place in a single dwarf galaxy with all the shards within it. And adding all the shards powers together doesn't seem like it would be enough to be powerful enough to span an entire universe's "power of creation", just enough for the Cosmere galaxy and it's couple handfuls of planets. So mayhaps Adonalsium and it's opposite are sort of like Ruin and Preservation. Splinters of something bigger that are opposite intents. 16 shards / intents > Adonalsium Adonalsium + opponent + possibly others > Something else. What are your thoughts?
  13. If Odium was able to splinter a shard, just how powerful was he? Wouldn't saved be able to easily destroy Odium, since he is Preserving people and yet he is Ruining Odium, and thus the intents are in Harmony? Seriously, I have no idea and all y'all are smarter then me so I'm interested in what you have to say.
  14. Preservation is an infinity, a note held for eternity. Ruin is intelligent decay. Honor is the protection of the weak, perhaps. Cultivation is the progression of things, maybe. Speculative Intents aside, what about Odium? We can sort of tell from the magic systems and occasionally WoB's what the intents actually are. Odium...hatred. Why does he destroy Shards?
  15. This is my theory for the reason about the only people of specific location (ex. Arelon and Duladel) are take from the Shaod. Before of this I had to remember some of the Realmatic aspect of the Cosmere. - The Cognitive aspect of someone (or something) is build about how is views and how he views himself. - The Spiritual aspect is a set of connection (less or more strong) with other Spiritual Aspect (place, time, idea, people, religion,ecc...) - On Sel there is just one "magic system" and the many forms that take are just different use of the same magic system. Now at the true Theory (that is specific of AonDor but can probably works with all the Selish way to use the Dor): I suppose the reason of only the right cultures have a chance to be take by the Shaod, is because their people have an Aon in their name. This simply fact put a minimal connection through the Spiritual Realm to the AonDor (something like bein a Scadiran give a little connection to Preservation). Growing with that name a people "imprint" that Aon as part of self in his Cognitive Aspect that improve his conncection to the AonDor. This theory works pretty well with all the Selish magic system (just remove "Aon" and put "Alphabeth of X") but has some problem with the AonDor without any other fact.... The AonDor is strange, is bein manipulate to offer much power of any other Selish Magic, using Elantris as a "super boost". I suppose that before Elantris was made any people with Aon-name and the right connection with the AonDor may use this magic (As seems to happen with the other selish magic). But for some reason they decided to concentrate the AonDor in a more mighty form. And any people with the "enough strong" connection was take by the Shaod and become Elantrian. Any though about this theory ? Pro or Contros ?
  16. This is probably more appropriate for the Cosmere Theories board, but because I am relying on Secret Histories information, let's keep it here for the time being. So, I have a thought and a question. * We know that taking up a Shard required Connection to the Shard. * We now can parse, from Khriss's comment about the Shattering, and a very recent WoB stating that Adonalsium was Shattered because the Holder was killed, that the actual moment of Shattering probably looked very close to the "inverse" of the scene of Sazed's Ascension. In the latter case, Sazed was alone and there were two power sources which he, having Connection to both, was able to take up. * In the former case, I suspect that a similar progression occured: after being killed, Adonalsium Holder dropped a body; 16 people should have been *in the direct proximity* of the drop, they would have done the same thing Sazed did: stepped in and attempted to take up the power. As each of them had Connection to a specific aspect/Intent of the Power, they took that Intent and became a Shard. This begs the question: if a Shardholder (like Leras or Ati) dies, drops a body and TWO PEOPLE attempt to take up the power, will the Shard be split into "SubShards" with different "SubIntents"? Or, in general, what would happen? As an example: can I train two people to be (a) very active and be ( passively-aggressively hateful, kill Odium (heh!), and have Person (a) become Wrath and Person ( become Passive Aggression. (these are all examples - I actually do not know what Odium is made out of)?
  17. Totally random and crazy theory for me, but here goes... What if we have been looking at this the wrong way, and the Death of Adonalsium wasn't the big bad event we all think it is? What if Rayse is, for all intent and purpose, the 'good guy', trying to do his best to avoid Adonalsium being reformed, and this is why he is so terrified of Sazed? As the Vessel of two Shards, he is the closest being to Adonalsium since the Shattering... Break it apart!
  18. At the Portland signing for Shadows of Self, I asked Brandon if all the shards had a opposite paired, and he replied to the effect that "Philosophically speaking, you could argue they did, but not all had polarized opposites like Preservation and Ruin." That got me thinking about what the other opposites would be for our known shards. Odium (Hatred) Would likely be opposite to Devotion (Love). The new found Autonomy (Free will) would likely be opposite to Dominion (Control). That in turn made me realize that the shards were paired with something like them. Odium and Devotion are both Higher emotions. Autonomy and Dominion are both Ideologies. Preservation and Ruin are both Natural Forces. So i started pulling apart the remaining shards and trying to guess what their paired shard would be. Though only one I'm even slightly confident in is Honour's Pair. Abuse. Honour is to bring people together, to protect those weaker than yourself, to defend and protect. Abuse is to break bonds, hurt those who can't defend themselves, to attack and destroy. What Magic system do we know of that might fit Abuse? Ashyn, the world of Silence Divine has a system where people purposely infect themselves with diseases to grant them selves supernatural abilities. They hurt their own bodies for personal gain, and spread the infection to others, hurting them as well. It fits. Less so than other intents might, but it fits well enough. So, in conclusion, or TL;DR: Abuse might be a shard and Honour's opposite. It's probably on Ashyn. Please, throw as many WoB's at me as you can, proving or disproving all or parts of this theory. EDIT: Nevermind. Found a Wob saying there is no Shard on Ashyn at the moment.
  19. Ok, so a bit of fun. We know about the known members of the seventeenth shard already, right? We also know certain known worldhoppers at this point. I was hoping we could share our wishlists of people we want to see (or already suspect to) become worldhoppers of some sort and show up on other worlds at some point in the Cosmere. For me, I have to say it's Wan ShaiLu. I really hope she is still about and cosmere-aware at this point. She was betrayed by Hoid at the beginning of her saga and when last we saw her, she went off to hunt him down! Other than shadesmar being a bad idea on Sel, she seems a perfect fit for the seventeenth shard. Buy hey, if Galladon managed, why wouldn't she? I'd love to see her finally catch her prey or use her forgery elsewhere in the cosmere. Who do you guys want to see worldhop and show up again on another world?
  20. Hi there, This is my first post so it might have already been covered, if so thats my bad. It covers a few of the books so feel free to correct me if it is contradicted somewhere or if you have things to add. I was thinking about how Odium splintered the shard of Honor. I think that the honorblades that the Heralds wielded are actually the remnants of what is left of the shard of honor. This is why they can grant magically abilities to someone who previously could not access magic on Roshar. Also I wonder if they were all collected if they could reforge the Shard of Honor. If this is true then it would mean that the shards of Devotion and Dominion would have items that were made from their remnants. Brandon has said that the Aons inside of the Seons are splinters of Devotion so what are the splinters of Dominion? Also what would happen if a splinter of Devotion, a Seon, and a splinter of Honor, an honorblade, were combined like when Sazed combined the shards of Ruin and Preservation in the Mistborn series?
  21. I believe Stormlight consists of the investiture of all three Shards. Evidence: 1. “Stormlight makes things grow” (WoB inscribed in a book). That’s the influence of Cultivation’s investiture. We know that the Growth and Regrowth Surges are associated with Cultivation and that Cultivation (through the Nightwatcher) gifted Lift with the ability to transmute food into Stormlight. (That gift, together with Rysn’s larkin, will enable MANY people to Survive after the Everstorm interferes with Stormlight dispersal.) 2. Honor’s investiture in Stormlight is evidenced by the Windrunner Surges used by both Kaladin and Szeth. 3. Odium’s investiture shows itself in the adrenalin rush Surgebinders feel on inspiring Stormlight. That’s consistent with Odium’s Aggression mandate (intent). (See "Mandates of the Known Shards." Many passages describe infused Stormlight as a “raging tempest” like the Highstorms themselves. “Rage” is Odium’s contribution to the Highstorms. (Others on this Forum have similarly concluded over the years.) In contrast, when the mists rush into Vin, “]S]he felt suddenly warm…Her entire body burned like metal” (HoA, Tor softcover, 2008, p. 638). “She felt as if the bleeding sun itself blazed within her, running molten through her veins” (ibid, p. 642). Vin does NOT feel a “raging tempest” – even when the power within her at that moment is exponentially greater than what Surgebinders infuse – because Preservation is not Odium. I argue elsewhere that forging Stormlight from all three investitures is part of Odium's prison. It absorbs his gaseous form Physical investure, making it difficult to animate Odium's spren.
  22. In reading some posts, I saw folks questioning why Odium is the "most dangerous Shard." I attempted to answer this in a small section of my very large post about the origin of the Cosmere and how the magic works. I thought it worthwhile to repeat here, for separate discussion. I believe it is possible to increase a Shard's power by "expanding" its mind, its Consciousness, its ability to direct its power. We know from HoA that limiting the mind reduces power; the opposite should be possible. Once humans and other sentient life began adding their ideas to the Cognitive Realm, divine Consciousness had company. Human ideas grew both the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms simply by their conception and idealization. Since investiture comprises all things, then the addition of human thought should expand God’s own Consciousness. There’s a word to describe human thought dedicated to a God’s Consciousness. It’s called “worship,” and the means of communicating with God include prayer. The scene where Navani draws Thath, the glyph for justice, following the Battle at the Tower affords a great example: “What was a prayer, if not creation? Making something where nothing existed. Creating a wish out of despair, a plea out of anguish. Bowing one’s back before the Almighty, and forming humility from the empty pride of a human life. Something from nothing. True creation.” WoK, Kindle p. 948 (emphasis added). Observations and Conclusions: When people have ideas about honor or hatred or selflessness or whatever, those ideas form in the Cognitive Realm. Following the process outlined in the Cosmere post linked above, some of those ideas will eventually reify into Spiritual Realm ideals, connected to other ideals. Growing a Shard’s Consciousness thus grows the Shard’s Spirit, giving the Shard more capacity to exercise power in the Physical Realm. True creation.Odium’s influence may be the most pervasive of all Shards, since hatred is so universal (unlike, say, honor or even devotion). The many hate-filled ideas spawning in the Cognitive Realm increase Odium’s Consciousness, and ultimately power, rapidly Odium is the “most dangerous” of the Shards because human hatred enables Odium to grow his power quickly over time.
  23. Just listened to the end of WoR for the umpteenth time. It is the first time I noticed the stormfather pluralizing shards when saying Dalinar will be a radiant without shards. ...uh... Why was it pluralized? It is unnecessary to add that pesky little "s". It is probably just a literary thing. Here I begin to read too much into things... I get that he won't have a shardblade, but is he now permabanned from shardplate as well? Discuss
  24. Each Shard has an intent. Many of these intents contradict each other, sometimes prompting battles between Shards. What was Adonalsium's intent? It might have had no intent, since the intents would have canceled each other out, or it might have had all 16 intents at once. This would cause Adonalsium to always be in conflict with itself. Given the strength of the intents of the Shards that we have seen, it would also be in extreme agony, and never actually be able to do anything. A solution to that situation would be for Adonalsium to shatter itself, hence my theory.
  25. Hey guys, don't know if this thread has already been done but i wanted to make a new Topic all about the Easter eggs in each of the Cosmere books. I've been doing a great reread of all the Cosmere books and thought it would be a good idea to have them easily accessible for everybody, So if you find a Easter Egg please feel free to post
