  1. From the album: Shallan

one of these days I'll figure out the proper way to upload art on here Hadn't done any illustrations for the first two books of SA so I had to change that! I always loved the illustration of the Santhid in WoR so I wanted to try my hand at it too.
  2. From the album: General SA Art

This commission took me more than two months… and woah, finally, I have another version of WoK main cast! (2013 version is here.) My personal fave is probably Navani =) This set: Kaladin | Shallan | Syl | Szeth | Navani | Wit | Adolin | Dalinar (Viewing separately) Sketches on paper: Development meme:
  3. From the album: The Knight Radiant

As Always happens the minute I finish an image I think of a better way to do it. The battle with MM was incredible at least in my mind. I felt like the previous image didn't capture the hugeness of Re-Shephir enough and besides I wanted to make a few figures including Adolin in his Armor. LOved this scene from the moment I`ve read it! Finally it's done.
  4. This week on our show we talked about how frustrating it was reading Shallan's sections of Oathbringer and how we may be looking at her in the wrong way! We hope that you will join the discussion by watching the video here:
  5. This is my first time posting, though I am a long time lurker. I'm on my first reread of Words of Radiance, and I'm just starting to realize the little details that Brandon throws in there. Minor WoR spoilers below, continue at your own risk! When Shallan is traveling with Tyn and company in the caravan she took over, they stop to rest by a rock lait with vibrant plant life. Shallan starts to sketch idle things, like the plants and people around herself. She then lets herself go and draws what comes to mind. I quote: This is page 358 in the hard-cover WoR. This WoB heavily implies that Nazh (with help?) used Shadesmar to move the beads representing Jasnah's stuff (and presumably the sailor's corpses) to land so he could recover them more easily. I think that Shallan drew him in the process of recovering the stuff. Thoughts?
  6. Adolin was said to have wandering eyes and seems open-minded. Shallan has fancied how many characters now? Kabsal, Jasnah, Kaladin, Adolin... And that's just in the (year?) we know her. With the apocalypse upon them, propriety is falling apart. I can see them...experimenting. The only reason I'm skeptical is because Brandon's focus is never on sex — he's deliberately stated so multiple times and I think he'll stand in keeping relationships vague. But who knows. Perhaps he'll surprise me. Anyone think this is possible, in canon or just as a real-world hypothetical?
  7. Created based on discussion on other thread. Does Shallan have her plate yet, and has she had it at any points in the past?
  8. So, I was reading OB, and my most common thought reading it, was I just want Kaladin to be happy... And that got me thinking. If you could, what would you give the characters of Stormlight Archive. A horse for Kaladin, or maybe boots? A new sketch book for Shallan? Also, what would you want to be given to you from the characters?
  9. So I was bashing Shallan in another thread and got into the start of potentially an interesting debate. I was griping once again about how Truths were way more boring than Oaths and made in the process the following claim: To which @Steel Inquisitive replied: This aligning not at all with what I remembered from Oathbringer, I made the following reply: Well, at this point Steel Inquisitive made the point that we were getting rather off the topic of the thread, which was about disappointments in SA in general and not Shallan in particular, but the reply above got me wondering if I were missing something. Especially considering that as of this writing, five people have upvoted Steel Inquisitive's response, which suggests to me a significant number of people must agree with the argument. Which makes no sense to me. As mentioned above, claiming that Shallan's fourth Ideal caused her mental problems seems about as strange to me as claiming that Kaladin's second Ideal caused his depression, but maybe I missed or am forgetting something. Any thoughts?

  11. The ensuing silence. The room's temperature rising by Shallan's blush alone. Just think about it.
  12. Hi there! First time poster, but long time fan of all of you on the forum. In one of the Shallan flashback chapters, the one where she buys Jushu back, the man collecting her debt said something interesting. Shallan's necklace was made of aluminum, which can only be soulcast. There's been some WOB where he's said that aluminum has some weird effects on magic systems all over the cosmere. My theory is that the aluminum necklace supressed or killed Shallan's bond with Pattern. Shallan's father, influenced by Odium, didn't want another radiant around to ruin his plans, so he gave her the necklace to try to sever the bond. That's just my take on it. Thoughts?

I loved reading this section of the book, so I drew it!

  15. Surprise another Shallan thread! The Fact that we have so much to talk about her means that Brandon must have done something right (or something very wrong ). But I wanted to talk about her, and not how she reacts to others, or whether she is a great or horrible character. In Oathbringer We got introduced to the fact that Shallan is viewing herself as different people or personalities. This post will seek to analyze them and try to show you who shallan really is. For consistency sake we are going to label the 3 personalities we mainly interact with in oathbringer as Veil, Radiant, and maskShallan. maskShallan refers to the times that shallan is without an illusion or when she is trying to be the Shallan she is known for publicly. Let’s start with who I consider the easiest to analyze, and that is Radiant. Radiant was created as a means to deal with the truth Shallan spoke at the end of WoR, that she is a murderer and used Pattern to kill her mom. Radiant consists of skills that Shallan was uncomfortable with using at the moment, this includes Shardblade fighting, and scholarship. Now some of you may be questioning why I put scholarship in there and I will address that later on (the organization of this is pretty hard to do…). Radiant also embodies Shallans perception of power and authority most of which she perceives from Jasnah and thus Radiant feels like a copy of a copy of Jasnah sometimes. It definitely is a copy but lacks the detail and personality of the original. Radiant has lots of skills and utility of SHallan but her personality I would argue Is not of Shallan but perhaps what Shallan wishes she was sometimes. Now let’s talk maskShallan. This is the one we are at the same time most familiar with and least familiar with because maskShallan’s purpose is one abstract thing, Comfort/Survival. maskShallan contains what Shallan needs to get through her day by day and helps her avoid anything that causes her discomfort/mental anguish. maskShallan was the character we were most familiar with but she has underwent some changes recently as her newest oath has reintroduced a memory she can no longer forget. This means she must make sure she does not think about it. She cannot have time to ponder things she must keep herself busy. Now what does scholarship require? Thinking. This is why she had to push scholarship and analyzing onto Radiant, this is one of the reasons why maskShallan had to run away from the lessons with Jasnah and go to Kolinar, if she has free time then she will have to confront who she is. This is also why when Shallan is at all of the meetings she is constantly drawing rather than taking notes or paying attention. Drawing is one of the things she can do to relax her mind to keep herself busy, she can no longer distract herself with random scholarship like she did in WoR only drawing will work now. Now Veil is complex, not that the others aren’t, but Veil is hard to pin down. We have seen hints of the parts that make up Veil from early in her flashbacks and likely before. Veil is the parts of her that would be not approved of by high society. This includes thieving, verbal jabs, improper jokes and also her painful backstory, maybe even her pain in general As she always says that Veil could deal with it. When you look at it this way you can see that veils tendencies with “the guys” is very similar to the way she acted with her brothers being “witty”. Veil also has Shallans goto method of solving problems, Thieving. When Shallans family was in trouble the solutin she came up with was to steal a soulcaster from Jasnah. Which she succeeded in with flying colors like a natural! She perfectly impersonated wanting to be jasnah ward, because remember this was her goal was to become jasnahs ward. Not to learn and study with Jasnah (But whether Scholarship is natural to Shallan or is something she formed herself to be as a disguise unconsciously to fool jasnah is another topic) she needed to get close to so she could take that soulcaster. Other options never entered serious consideration. Likewise when she was shipwrecked in danger of freezing to death she had to con the slavers into thinking she was worth their resources, that she was very important. Adolin started out as a con as well because she needed the relationship to save her family. So as @PhineasGage @Ailvara discussed in another thread Remember all of this happened or started before Shallan created Veil… or at least the illusion of Veil. The other trait that Veil possesses at this time is child Shallan's desire to rescue others. Shallan in the flashbacks was trying to save her family from themselves by helping them find interests or saving them from debts and so on. Veil in Oathbringer has this…. I don't know when it shifted over to her but it is obviously there during the Kolinar parts as she is giving food to the poor and trying to help the city. I also believe that veil contains some of the True Shallan that we haven’t been introduced to yet and is buried deep in her not wanting to be seen by anybody, EVER! As @SLNC posted in another thread "This isn't personaShallan. personaShallan is the 'prim, excitable girl who had been trained by cautious Vorin society.' ... If this is realShallan, then I would place her closer to Veil... " So who is the real Shallan, The obvious answer is that she is a blend of all 3 of them plus a more scary visceral wild part we don’t know much about. However I do believe as the sleepless wrote And at this point I would say Veil contains the most Truth of the three we know. Also thanks to everyone in the Adolin-Shallan-Kaladin thread for the much discussion about this.
  16. To start this off I understand that this is kind of a stretch so try and follow along and be patient with me lol. This whole theory revolves around the time Shallan meets Hoid for the the first time at the fair. In this Chapter Shallan observes Hoid slip something into his drink. Hoid drinks the contents of the drink and immediately turns and looks at Shallan in shock. Most people have concluded that he looked at shallan becuase he sense the presence of a Surgebinder near by. I believe that this is all misdirection and that there is more going on in this scene. Shallans role in this chapter is the problem solver. She has taken it upon her self to try and soothe her brothers emotions and get them back on a positive path. She first leaves to find Balat at the Gambling tent but is confronted by one of the house guard. She tells him that she wants to go to the gambling tents and he does not think that it is a good idea. Somehow Shallan manages to convince the man to let her go into the tents. While in the tents she finds her brother Balat who is watching the Axehound fights. She goes against his wishes and sets up a meeting between him and Elytia. He was not happy about this but then subsides and agrees to meet with her. Then she returns to her father and he is meeting with Hoid. This is where the aforementioned event happens earlier. She then leaves and finds Wickim in the carriage contemplating suicide. She tries in this moment to convince him that he can do more than just wait for the tirades of his father. She shows him that he can at least study and spend his time seeking knowledge instead of waiting for the displeasure of her father. He is not fully convinced and she flee's in tears. Later she speaks with Hoid and he shows her that Wickim is actually working on the math that Shallan prepared for him about the highstorms. So to come back around to my original point.I think the vial that Hoid had was the basic metals that all mistborn use. I believe that Hoid began to burn tin and bronze by natural instinct because it is common to do so among Mistborn. He then has sensation that another Allomancer is near by and looks directly to Shallan. Not expecting an Allomancer to be on Roshar or at least in his immediate vicinity he looks at her in surprise maybe even panic. He then realizes this small child is not the threat he first expects her to be and expunges the first feeling of danger/shock he originally had and continues his conversation with Lin. I believe that Shallan might actually be a Mistling and is unintentionally burning brass much like Vin in book one of the Mistborn trilogy. She might be doing it at such a minute amount that she doesn't actually realize what she is really doing. Furthermore Could her mother have suspected this as well and this be the reason that her and the other man tried to kill Shallan? Maybe she was not of Roshar herself and the man she talked to might not have been of the Skybreakers? Could it be that Shallan is actually a Mistling or maybe even more a Mistborn and does not know that she has the unique abilities. Maybe Hoid showing her how to use her Lightweaver powers for the reader is a misdirection to a larger reveal later in the overall story? Well there it is hopefully its not to nonsensical. Hopefully you have read this with an open mind and can give me some constructive criticism.
  17. Let's try this all again! There has been many a view on Shallan's romantic arc in Oathbringer (otherwise known as the infamous "love triangle"), and considering a recent poll shows one-third of this board remains unconvinced that the marriage of our young married couple is really all she (um, he) wrote, it appears there is still division on the topic. Two preliminary points: One, I changed the title to reflect my personal feelings on the importance of the characters in this discussion. "S" for our girl Shallan (it is her romance regardless of outcome after all), "K" for our main character Kaladin, then "A" for our tertiary character Adolin (sorry, Adolin fans, that's the word of the man himself.) Plus that spells Ska, which just happens to be a word used elsewhere in the Cosmere! Could this be significant? Let's discuss! (Kidding, even I'm not that crazy.) Two, here is a link to a document compiled by the intrepid @Ailvara during the prior discussion. This is a little out of date, but suggestions for edits (and also counterpoints!) would be much welcome. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VqLjiUojkPqIfLJLyu7OnykTP3i-LG0f5f1KjRSJE6A/edit
  18. I thought Shallan might have a crush on Jasnah when I was reading the books. Now it's WoB confirmed!
  19. I've been re-reading the Cosmere the last few months and I just got onto my Oathbringer reread. This time around I caught something that I hadn't seen talked about so I figured I'd point it out; When Shallan is exploring Kholinar as Veil she encounters Hoid telling the story of Mishim. He recognizes her through her illusion. Shallan comments that Hoid has a white and black jar in his satchel. This is a jar of White Sand and is likely how he identified her since the Kinetic Investiture of her illusion would change the sand's color.
  20. Branderbot 2000's newest novel features a love triangle for our sassy redheaded heroine. In this episode, she goes stepping out with a handsome prince in armour (refer to previous episode, Six Feet of Steel) who is not very smart but is pretty good at beating people up. Does she choose the mysterious shirtless bridgeman Kaladin? Or the well-heeled prince with sacks of spheres? It turns out the prince has mysteries of his own... ...like how he poops in Shardplate.
  21. From the album: Stormlight Archive Fanart

A quick before-homework sketch of Pattern in the Palanaeum. Lopsided and disproportionate because of too small of a time window for creation, I hope everyone takes it to be "abstract".
  22. Not sure if it this has been brought up in here before but haven't seen anything while looking and here we are. In Words of Radiance chapter 30 "Nature Blushing" while Shallan is still traveling to the war camps on the Shattered Plains, she notices a thicket of growth that stands out as unusually lush compared to the surrounding landscape and considering the general climate of the region. She has the group all stop and while shes's in this little thicket she starts to draw. Now, I already thought this little "garden" stood out as odd but then she starts to note all the diverse spren and flora, then has that drawing session where she unknowingly draws a scene with a certain set of sailors (presumably Yalb and the other wreck survivors) and another depicting a woman taking a chisel to a statues face (if you know, you know). Why was Shallan able to draw these scenes which we can reasonably assume were events that were either happening or had recently happened elsewhere on Roshar when she shouldn't have been able to? Was it something to do with the seemingly random and unimportant "garden" in the middle of nowhere? Is that "garden" a significant place or just a random tidbit, because it really jumped out at me. Thoughts?
