  1. Hi everybody, so now that Words of Radiance is out and im guessing everybody on here has already read it i wanted to make a thread about the third installment of the series. There was so much in the second book, Ghostbloods, epic fight scenes, the meeting between major characters and their growth as individuals, so much new info and hints of things to come. I just wanted to know what you are most looking forward to in the next book personally im looking forward to, Szeths past and his progress in the Skybreakers. Hoid and his road trip with Jasnah. The secret societies and their numerous plots. Axies and his various and inconvenient incarcerations. Finding out what that damnation code means!! The Unmade Kaladin finally bringing a girl home to meet his parents and the reunion between him Roshone and Laral. The whole point of this thread is just what you want and what you suspect will happen in the next book
  2. Hey guys I haven't seen (yet) a discussion about the words of radiance relationships so I will start one here, I am just wondering as to how the relationships between the major characters will turn out, since Adolin our lonely bachelor had just been engaged to our charming sharp witted Shallan, through Jasnah. I am wondering how it will turn out, will Brandon Sanderson try to make a love triangle between Adolin, Shallan, and Kaladin. Since from my readings of WOK seem to indicate that Kaladin's mother had quite the sharp tongue, so maybe Shallan might attract the eyes of Kaladin. IDK so i hope everyone can help enlighten me with their thoughts Thanks!!
  3. Does anybody have any guesses on who this is? -Mraise -Hoid -Lift Just wanted to Gather some general opinions on who they think this is, could this be the champion to fight Odium?
  4. So this can be just a general discussion of the nature of the orders of the Knights Radiant's, but I wanted to ask a specific question based on a few simple elements of a few of the "Radiant's reborn". First two subjects: Jasnah and Shallan based on what we learned in WoK, they both were soulcasters, which was, if I'm not mistaken, an order of the KR? It has been mentioned a couple times in each book that some of the KR's could soulcast. Is this ability to soulcast just for special people in the KR, is it randomly dispersed between the orders, or can some members of the KR be apart of two orders? Second subject: Lift In her interlude, she grew vines very rapidly to break a window, and she obviously had the ability to manipulate friction by adding friction or taking away. Does this mean she was part of two orders as well since there were two different abilities she had? EDIT: I just looked on the wiki and found an image that discribed the orders pretty well. I was assuming that two separate powers meant two different orders. So I guess the answer to my first queston would be that only Lightweavers and Elsecallers can soulcast because of Transformation? Or is each shared attribute between two given orders manifested differently? Example: Lift and Lopen can both use the attribute of Progression to revive people or "regrow" them (I assume Lopen can do this because he started to regrow his arm), but Truthwatchers share the attribute of Progression with them. Does this mean they have the same ability to "regrow" or do they manifest the attribute differently? Does that make sense?
  5. I'm referring to Shallan's father, if it's unclear. Of all of the revelations in WoR, this is probably the one that bugs me the most. Is Shallan's father a hero, or a villain? Now, the cheap answer is probably 'both', but his characterization is interesting enough that I think it's worth examining in some detail. The argument on the villain side is pretty easy, of course - he's abusive, violent, and ultimately murderous. Plenty of examples from the flashbacks to support that side. However, the last revelation changes the picture drastically. He makes an enormous sacrifice so that Shallan is not implicated in either death. If he gets his way, no one (except Shallan) will ever know what he did for her, and instead will be scorned and hated forever, even by his other children. At no time that we see does he seem tempted to give up the burden, and he never seems to blame Shallan for his state or the family's misfortunes. Re-reading the flashbacks seem to indicate that this is the stone around his neck that drags him down. It seems like a hugely heroic thing to have done, doubly so because no one will ever (presumably) learn of it. Basically, he's the anti-Amaram. I can think of two possible alternative readings that make it seem less heroic. The first is that, well, he's scared of Shallan (girl's got a Shardblade, after all, and she doesn't seem to have a whole lot of compunctions about killing people in self-defense). This kinda sorta works but I don't really ever get that vibe from what we see. The second is that it's just an extension of his possessiveness; Shallan is _his_, and no one gets to take her from him. Also sort of fits what we see, just not very strongly. It's worth noting that Hoid implies that there's something unnatural going on here: So perhaps her father's degeneration has a supernatural element, though that almost seems to take away from his arc. I want to say that her father's arc is supposed to be a classic greek tragedy (note: I am not an expert on greek tragedies, classic or otherwise); ultimately his great, heroic act is what ends up dooming him. I think I'd have to call him a hero, but I'm curious how other people interpret this. A side note - What will happen when/if her siblings learn what really happened to their mother?
  6. I looked through the Forums and did not see any threads about this. Hopefully this is a new Idea. Remember back in that Shallan flashback wherein she met Hoid, Shallan is trying to cheer up her family and gives one of her brothers a bunch of math problems. I do not have the quote at the moment, but when she looks back at him hard a work, she mentions something about predicting Highstorms using math. Did Shallan invent and/or start the practice of Stormwardens? If I remember correctly they are spoken of as being relatively new in WoK. If he figured out how to predict them mathematically and taught others, he could have been the founder of the Stormwardens, all because Shallan was trying to cheer up her family. The smallest of actions can have the largest of consequences.
  7. The corpse of her mother was wearing blue and gold...the colors of the Alethi king's house...
  8. Okay I've stared this thread to see what people think of the character developments so far by the end of Wor. So Kaladin wow I'll admit I was a little frustrated by him in parts but looking back in wor his journey was a necessary one. He had a alot of pent up frustration and unresolved issues eating away at him by the end of wok and I think we can safely say that he really needed to figure out and grasp his role and place in the grand scheme of things that's not to say he's done growing as a person not by a long shot but he's getting there. I think we can safely say that his going home in the next book will be an intriguing development especially when it comes to the place and people of his childhood and seeing there reactions especially that of his parents who I'm guessing probably think he's dead. Now for Shallan gotta say wasn't to rapped up in her character in wok but boy did wor bring out the inner deemed child lol. She went from meek to evil genius and that tongue and sparky humorous later on was just awesome. The flash backs where a little predictable but I got the feeling they where less about explaining her character and more about setting up and laying a foundation for future events dun dun duhhhhhhh. By the end of the book she was definitely more capable as a person however I got the feeling that she was still uncertain about who she was but I get the feeling that that well be worked out in the next instalment soon enough. Adolin hmmmmm wasn't to thrilled with his development I thought was a decent enough character in the last book if a little closeminded. I noticed that with the duels and increasing danger and ever increasing odds that his chapter has turned into a real adrenalin junky the arena and his decision to continue in the four on one bout demonstraighted this. I thought his questioning his place in his relationship with Shallan just before he went postal on Sadias was a little showing and worrying but I guess we will just have to wait and watch to see how he deals with his actions. Okay so Im curious as to your opinions of there developments so far and how you think it may impact there relationships in the future.... Thoughs??????
  9. We need our own thread so we can squee without needing to worry about defending our ship. I figure I might as well kick things off since I'm checking the other thread obsessively. To celebrate us having our own thread, I present this. So what got you all hooked on Shalladin. Me, it was when she smiled at him. That was amazing. Edit: the art is not mine, just something I tripped over on tumblr.
  10. I'm trying to track how many oaths each Knight Radiant has made, and what the benefits were at each point. In particular, at what point do Knight Radiants acquire shardblades, shardplate, and control of their powers? First, Shallan: To the best of my knowledge, we have never actually SEEN Shallan take the First Oath, ("Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.") However, we now know that Shallan possessed an active shardblade as a child, and that her spren, Pattern, was apparently present in a limited way when she was a child. I believe this indicates that Shallan must have spoken the First Oath as a child, and that her order, at least, recieves their shardblades after the First Oath. Shallan spoke a 'Truth' at the end of Way of Kings, which i believe counted as the Second Oath. The second oath seems to have granted her access to soulcasting, lightweaving, and absorbing stormlight. Shallan spoke another 'Truth' at the end of Word of Radiance: I THINK that counts as the Third Oath, but we haven't seen any special benefit of progressing that far. I would have thought that Knights Radiant would acquire Shard Plate by the time they speak the third oath, but apparently not. Second, Kaladin: Kaladin speaks the First Oath during Way of Kings. ("Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.") I'm working from memory, but i believe that speaking that oath seemed to give him more reliable access to stormlight, gravity, and adhesion. Kaladin spoke SOMETHING else during Way of Kings, but I'm not certain that it counted as an oath. "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves". this MIGHT be the second oath, but i don't recall Kaladin gaining any special powers when he spoke it. it's also very similiar to what WAS an oath at the end of Words of Radiance: "I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right." Either those two sentences together constitute the second oath, or they are the second and third oaths, respectively. Either way, Kaladin recieved HIS shardblade AFTER speaking the oath in WoR. this seems to imply that different orders recieve shardblades at different times. If Kaladin still has a third oath to speak, that would be the logical time for him to recieve shardplate. We don't know how many Oaths Renarin has spoken: so far, we only know that he can heal his eyesight, and can apparently communicate with his Spren. Dalinar has spoken two oaths at the end of WoR: It's implied that he MIGHT be due a shardblade after two oaths, but the Stormfather has refused to become one. Can anyone else comment on what milestones each of the knights radiant have reached at this point, and what benefits they recieved at each point? It's also possible that my notes could be incorrect, since I'm working from memory. Feel free to correct me.
  11. Now, we know that Kaladin and Shallan are Surgebinders. We also know that Kaladin could do with a sparring partner, and, as stated in one of the preview chapters, that partner should be one of equal or greater skill/strength. Well, that'd be hard to do, but perhaps he could spar with Shallan—sort of, anyway—and she could practice her lightweaving powers too. By making light replicas of herself holding... ...a Shardblade, perhaps? Be extra tricky to find out who the real one is. He couldn't just let the swords fly, because if it were real he'd die.
  12. A few moments ago in the writing class, Sanderson just revealed that in order for Shallan to produce an illusion of something (presumably with the illumination surge) she must first draw a picture of it. When the video of the lecture is put up, we can get the exact quote, but I just though I'd let y'all know. Edit: realized the topic name was spoilery.
  13. Here are all of the readings from Words of Radiance that have been released so far. This list is going to be updated when more come out. Also, the spelling of any new names are merely approximations, not intended to be completely accurate. Jasnah Prologue Kaladin - Chapter 2 Dalinar's Vision Shallan Flashback 1 - Red Carpet, Once White Eshonai Interlude Rysn's Interlude Ym Interlude Lift Interlude Taravangian Interlude Enjoy!
  14. What do you think will be Jasnah's most important lesson for Shallan? 1) The voidbringer writings she worked so hard on? 2) Lessons about Shadesmare? 3) Soulcasting? 4) Something else? I think her most important lesson is summed up from this quote in chapter 1: Jasnah even says its the most important lesson, more important than soulcasting. This quote is very foreshadowing, not only because it is important for Shallan to stand up for herself and face her dark past, but also because talks about illusion even before we know she is a light weaver, or what light weaving really is.
  15. So, this is actually a rather small post, but I feel it is important. Kaladin, as far as we've seen him, seems very honorable, always doing the right thing, and never really breaking the rules. He seems a bit too honorable, and he attracted an Honorspren. WoR spoiler This seems a little too similar to be a coincidence. Are the Nahel-bonding spren attracted to those similar in personality to them? Or, and this is an interesting thought, do they manipulate the person they plan on bonding to and change their personality, their intent? Syl confirms that she was following Kaladin since before he even joined Amaram's army, around the time he volunteered to go with his brother to defend him. Seems honorable. WoR spoiler
  16. When Kaldin spoke the Words, "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves," we rose to our feet and roared with excitement! When Lift spoke "I will remember those who have been forgotten," we shed tears and begged for more! Speaking the Ideals of the Knights Radiant have become some of my favorite moments in modern literature. I can't wait to see more Ideals! And so, dear friends, this poll. Who do you think will get to have their shining moment next? And please, drop a post to let us know why you chose them, how it might happen, and what the words might be!
  17. A conversation I definitely want to see happen... Jasnah, Lightsong, Shallan and Wit. I know now it will never happen, poor Lightsong, but still, Jasnah Shallan and Wit, maybe throw in a Navani and we'd have the single funniest dialogue in all of Sandersonian History. Cultivation would laugh so hard, she'd pass a kidney stone and the Everstorm would come.
  18. I was re-reading the "Red carpet once White" and noticed this . I am all of you must have thought about it. What might be inside the safe? definitely not spheres...!!! is it a honorblade? or the soul-casting fabrial?. And am I the only one felt that lullaby was so wrong especially the first two lines?.
  19. not going to lie, im a little disappointed that WoR is only 600 pages. look at WoK, take the first 600 pages in hand, and imagine that the remaining pages didnt happen. or the story was covered in 600 pages. sad faces. am i alone on this? if im being silly please convert me
  20. The situation Shallan and Jasnah are in now, where the ship is probably under attack, possibly by Ghostbloods (see the theory somewhere on the Forum), seems very similar to the one Egwene and Nynaeve found themselves in on the day they met Aviendha, where they were kidnapped by bandits to trade to Myrddraal. I hope that BS will not follow a trope (damsel escapes on her own) from a novel that he helped finish, but he seems to have painted S&J into a corner, story-wise. Are there other possible resolutions to their predicament? And if not, will there be outside help this time, or is it just their lightsaber (sorry, I mean shardblade) and soulcasting against the bad guys?
  21. If/when Jasnah and Shallan reach the shattered planes will Rock be able to see their spren, because he is alaii'iku? Seeing as he is able to see Syl it is only reasonable to assume he would be able to, and if he does, how would Jasnah or her spren react to this. Jasnah's secretiveness would make me think that she would either: A- Panic and try to leave/avoid the situation as soon as possible. or: B- Threateningly question how he is able to see her spren. It would also be interesting to see Shallan's reaction to this. I am excited to see how Rock's unique abilities will be revealed more in depth and how he will affect the story.
  22. Read the sample chapters that came out today and I have a prediction. Shallen will be kidnapped or at least go witht he Parshendi. She will be the means that the Artform will be unlocked I'm guessing. The question is what will it do for them? Allow them to think clearer or be more creative? Shallan though will be key in it though.
  23. I saw some discussion about Shallan's safehand being gloved in another thread, so I went to Tor.com to see for myself. While looking at the endpaper of Shallan, I started to focus on the creature next to her on the ledge. Then I went to the page that shows preliminary sketches by Ben McSweeny and Michael Whelan. Most of the sketches included a similar looking creature. That got me thinking that it might be Shallan's spren, Pattern. I realize that the descriptions of him so far do not support that. However, it's possible Pattern could experience a physical change. Syl's appearance doesn't change much, if any, from the first time Kaladin describes her. But that isn't surprising because she seems to remain largely ephemeral and non-physical, even with her cognitive growth. (Side note: not sure that it's Cognitive, as in realmatics, but I think it is since the return of her memories allow her a better perspective on how she sees herself.) Perhaps Pattern will go through development of a physical nature like Syl is undergoing development of a cognitive nature, giving rise to the creature with the arthropod-like appearance in the endpaper. Honestly, it seems like becoming more physical than cognitive would be a step-down for Pattern at this point, but perhaps some aspect of his bond with Shallan will require or enable such physical changes. What do you think?
  24. Based on the latest release of chapter 7 I believe Shallan's flashbacks will be recreated as illusions. Pattern will force her to use her other surge of illumination to show her flashbacks and reveal the hidden truths thus making their bond stronger. The only backup for this theory is when Shallan asked her first memory of him he essentially forces her to start creating an illusion of the time. The setup of a lie spren in these three chapters in is interesting in that the spren finds it interesting to find lies hidden by truth.
  25. Mind... blown. So many things. Cities! Betrayal. The Recreance? Spren dying? I think they could have been killed with Shardblades, but maybe being detached from their cognitive selves as Syl was might be enough of an offense. So did the spren see Shallan's latent talent and create her cockamamie plan to steal the Soulcaster in order to get her and Jasnah together? Were the spren working with the ideas in Shallan's mind when she decided to travel to find Jasnah? It would explain her fabulous artistic abilities - that's why she was chosen. Did they help with the events that precipitated the plan - her father's death? Is the spren that is following Shallan different from her bonded cryptic or is that how the cryptic manifests outside of her drawings? What happens in the Cognitive Realm when Shallan takes a memory?
