  1. First off: I listen to the Audiobook version of all of Brandon's books, so if I misspell names... That's why. =) Painted this little piece of fanart recently in an effort to learn a bit more about rendering in Photoshop. Let me know what you think! I'm working on my professional website at the mo, but I've got another up with a pretty wide collection of the art I've been making and the lessons I've been learning in the past few years. Feel free to visit: grantmhansen.com
  2. View in full resolution for maximum effect, please. OPTIONS > VIEW ALL SIZES > LARGE Character reference sheet for the Kholins and friends. Now you see what a bore Dalinar is by forcing all the men to wear uniforms 24/7 24/5 when all the girls get to wear pretty dresses with jewels and braids. I originally thought the havah was an overly complicated, fussy dress but after drawing them multiple times in multiple designs I've come to like their elegance and visual sleekness. Super large res for people who like collecting images or inspecting details: And for those unrepentant self-indulgent people (sadly including me on occasion) who like this kind of stuff - ALTERNATE UNIVERSE EDITION!! Would AU Kaladin own the Bridge Four t-shirt and the slave brands beanie from the Sanderson store? Who knows. And now you see why Shallan thinks all Alethi are huge. The Kholins' average height is higher than the national average in my country. The more times I draw a character, the more they evolve as I get a firmer grasp of how the written description translates to a picture that evokes the character traits and impressions of their personality that stood out most to me. When a character doesn't have viewpoints then I have to rely on other characters' relationship with them, and the occasional physical description that only comes in a line at a time. Renarin and Navani are hard for me for this reason, Renarin especially since he just fades into the background. And I don't think there's even a description of Salinor's blade that Adolin won in a duel and gave to Renarin.
  3. I know, I know. I'm late. I will most likely post a Shadolin pic after this one(For those of you who prefer that)
  4. They say love means never having to say you're sorry. No apologies. BOOTS. They say diamonds are a girl's best friend, presumably because they give the best reading light. They, whomever "they" are, might also say that a girl's second best friend, the boring and reliable one who is always tasked with being party mum and giving the "he's no good for you" speech, is a good pair of sturdy boots. They also say an army marches on its stomach. They are wrong. FULL SIZE: ...and for all the people out there who prefer to bowl for the other team and wear their hearts on their sleeves rather than their socks, here you go: ...still no apologise.
  5. It is a fact of life that any longrunning - or doorstopping - series requires a fanservice filler episode (AKA, Interlude) for padding in between the heavy drama. Unfortunately for the Kholins, the Shattered Plains has no hot spring bathhouses. However, Branderbot 2000's imagination has managed to contrive a lighthearted situational comedy where Shallan is asked to write a report on Nohadon for Navani, and fills it in with some sketches of the King of Alethela. The delightful Adolin and his endearingly awkward younger brother Renarin volunteer their help. And of course Shallan accepts, in order to practice her feminine skills.

    BOY☆FRIEND

Since Shallan is a MAGICAL☆GIRL (boring clerk desk job by day, spy by night) she needs a BOY☆FRIEND - because when you've got files to steal and evil lighteyes to peep on, those pickle jars won't open themselves, and you won't have time to unsqueak those squeaky door hinges. Adolin Kholin happens to be the best BOY☆FRIEND. In fact, he took the title of Best BOY☆FRIEND from Relis Ruthar in Alethkar's annual BOY☆FRIEND competition. All the other potential BOY☆FRIENDs think that showing off their skills with long stabby things in the arena make them good BOY☆FRIEND material, but Adolin showed them all that pushing someone onto the sand and giving them a good long cuddle is what decides who the real winner is. Highjudge Istow does not approve because she is, unfortunately, not a MAGICAL☆GIRL. Anyways, made this a while ago and couldn't decide on a size for the glyph in the background. I think the size difference between MAGICAL☆GIRL Shallan and a Shardbearer is pretty endearing. It could give Siri and Susebron a run for their money but Susebron probably wins because he's a MAGICAL☆GOD☆KING☆HASUBANDO. Full image below. Let me know if you want a higher res copy. :-)
  7. I'm in need of an idea, and I hope that you can help.W What/where do you vote that I should paint next? I'm thinking of gathering the options presented in this topic/the gallery's comments and drawing out of a hat, or making a spin wheel or something like that. Then it's off to the races. I'll keep you's posted. And without further ado--my interpretation of Kharbranth: (click to go to the gallery and click again to zoom, i guess..) Now the story: This painting was DANG FUN to create. I've been out painting landscapes for a class all fall long and practicing up my skills (because my past environment paintings have been suck...) This piece was the final assignment for the class and it evolved over the course of like, a month and a half. I worked really closely with my teacher (one of the artists who worked on Rio, the Ice Age sequels, the Peanuts Movie, etc.) and got some great feedback to make this all possible, so BIG thanks to him. Please note: Sky eels. The earlier iterations had sea gulls, then I realized: Roshar. No birds. huh. Also note: Teravangian's palace and much of the city is obscured by a creepy, foggy sort of shadow. Foreshadowing.. Ba dum Chish! ;-) And lastly: Please, seriously, cast your votes on the next Rosharan location that you'd like to see. Ideally, something that has adequate description in the books. I'd love some community involvement in the next piece, ya know? =) C Cheers!
  8. On my first reading I was under the impression that Shardplate was like Space Marine power armour, 8ft (250cm) of stabby stompy. How the heck did Kaladin get Helaran then? On further reading and wiki perusing I found that it was smaller than I originally thought. Since Shardbearers wear their clothes under their Plate and require special megahorses, I felt that they still needed to be heroically oversized compared to a normal Alethi. Some thoughts I had while sketching this: - Shardplate weighs ~250kg. You can still walk around with half busted Plate but you will feel the weight of a 15kg gauntlet when your elbow section shatters. Shardbearer training probably involves lots of squatz. - Helmets differ the most between suits of Plate and add several inches to your height. There must be empty space inside if you can get hit in the face several times and not die. Also Adolin's helm has little cat ears. - The Havah is a dress with a strip on the bottom that touches the ground and eventually gets dirty, but is meant to be replaced. I drew it as a separate petticoat underneath. You can't sew, cut seams, and resew on good silk because it ends up leaving little fraying pinholes on the fabric. - Adolin is shorter than Kaladin outside of Plate, since Kaladin is repeatedly described as being taller than everyone he meets except Rock. But whatever their height happens to be, Shallan is still a perfect little spoon size for either.

    Surgebonding

Looks like Timmy Shallan fell down a well again. Luckily for our plucky heroine, Captain Kaladin (who owns shirts - but if you are disappointed, they fall apart in every fight scene wink wink) jumped in after her. Since Shallan's previous date with the devastatingly handsome Adolin went so well, the newest episode features the dark and mysterious Kaladin, just in case you thought she was in danger of picking one. Have a box of tissues at the ready so you're prepared for angsty sepia-coloured flashbacks about dead brothers.

    Shallan

Shallan, I filled up the background with different items related to her character from the books. I always imagined Pattern as a weird mobius strip conundrum.
  11. I've been trying to figure out the alethi script translation on Shallan's drawing on page 354. Can anyone help me out? I haven't seen any other references to this particular drawing/translation yet, so I'm not sure if others have noticed it yet. It's from this image: The script is mirrored (unless I'm completely wrong about this, which is entirely possible), and I think I've made out some of the words, but it's just so hard to make out. A lot of this is complete guessing, but here's what I have so far (no doubt a lot of it is wrong). line 1: "the statement that intrigues* me though is that of king Nohadon (he/which) implies" line 2: "Uritheru could be reached (if/by) me ?? (sites/cities) if such a thing" line 3: "(our/where/war) (possible/passible/possibly) evidence of the roads ... ...be in place among the" line 4: "kingdom(s) of today I (leave/have) since (vetoed/visited) ... ... and found" line 5: "what I believe to be gateways there but the ..." line 6: "(once/ones) and how to work them it is likely too dangerous to activate them on the" line 7: "center of a populated city as (a/I) ... ... planned with my uncle" line 8: "I hope to find them (an/in) unpopulated ..." *"intrigues" was a guess from what looks like "intnegs"; hoping for a misspelling until I'm corrected. Has anyone else figured any of this out? I was hoping it would be part of the key for the chapter 84 epigraph, but it doesn't seem like it so far. Edit: changed translated text, added a few comments (in bold).
  12. I haven't gotten around to doing anything really big and nice, but I thought this looked kinda cute?
  13. Alright. So I was thinking about music and stuff and listening to some a little bit. And I'm like, "Hey! This song reminds me of Hoid!" And thus created was this article. Feel free to post more music for more characters/ more music for some of the characters already listed here. Hoid's Music: Tarantella https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_HwBYBPeNg Kaladin's Music: Child of LIght Hymn of Light* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6w222S7ia0 Shallan's Music: Child of Light Woods Darker Than Night (For the timid Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfeXBePMLf8 Shallan's Music: Child of LIght Bolmus Populi (For the happy, outgoing version of Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TxMSzHdmh0 and Child of LIght Dark Creatures (For the Shardbearing, Lightweaving Shallan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKf2zVQP7E Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Child of LIght Jupiter's Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBgV-RVPL8 Navani's Music: Child of Light Patches of Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4jB2XHJAW4 Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: Child of Light: Metal Gleamed in the Twilight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVLWMPOT4s Szeth's Music: G/S Burned Tower Remix PokemonRemixStudio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUlJA7YC_dk Hope you enjoy listening to these. They're all amazingly composed/recomposed by talented people. Kudos to them! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are some revisions I have for them and why I picked them: Hoid's Music: Intriguingly mysterious, like Hoid himself. Kaladin's Music: Reminds me of the battle scenes with Kaladin. Sort of like him trying to do what's right and best for others, and being simply amazing, pulling through every ordeal. Shallan's Music (Timid): This music sounds rather timid, like it could be played right after a tragedy, and it sort of reminds me of Shallan's conflicted childhood. Shallan's Music (Happy): This is a very cheerful song, as if there were no wrong in the world, sort of like how Shallan acts. Shallan's Music (Confident): Reminds me of the fact that she just goes through every trial. Adolin/Dalinar's Music: Doesn't this song just say "Shardbearer Champion" and "Blackthorn" to you? It does to me. Navani's Music: This one just seemed to fit Navani's personality. Especially in the Words of Radiance. Eshonai and Parshendi's Music: This sounds incredibly fierce and evil, like Stormform. Szeth's Music: This one sounded conflicted, confused, and insane. Like Szeth. *Or should I say STORMlight?
  14. I apologize if this has already been answered somewhere else. I searched and couldn't find any answers. In both Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, Shallan deliberately uses the ten heartbeats of summoning a Shardblade when summoning Pattern. However, we know this is not necessary when the Knight's spren is alive, as Pattern obviously is. I feel like there's some significance to why she makes it the full ten heartbeats. Maybe in her mind summoning Pattern immediately would be the same as admitting to herself that everything she tries to avoid thinking about in her childhood actually happened. That doesn't seem quite right to me though, so if anyone knows why, or has any thoughts on it, I would appreciate the input.
  15. Hello 17th Shard World, This is my first entry in the forum. I've been putting some art up in the gallery and someone recommended that I post them here too so that they'd reach a few more souls. The cell-shaded, cartoony looking ones are all several months to about a year old, so there's lots that I look at and want to change in them.. I'll do a few more reboots soon. Hope you all like 'em! Let me know what you think. You can see them, and some more stuff on my website if you ever have a mind: grantmhansen.com
  16. I don't know if it has been remarked before, but Hoids reaction to first seeing Shallan (in one of the flashbacks) seems very interesting: (WOR Chapter 45, page 522) Now, while it could be just normal Hoid antics, it seems to me like he was genuinely surprised at the sight of her. As there really isn't anything else about her of note at this time, it seems to me that it can only be that Hoid could tell that she was a surgebinder. In which case, how can Hoid tell? Can he tell whether anybody is able to use investiture, or did he just see something specific to surgebinders (maybe he could see pattern, even though he was almost dead)? Moreover, I'm inclined to believe the sight of even a surgebinder shouldn't cause such a reaction. Perhaps Hoid didn't think there were surgebinders around anymore, and Shallan was the first one he saw. I'm not sure what that would mean, but it definitely seems interesting.
  17. What would happen if the characters from the Stormlight Archive existed in our universe at our time period. if they did then what social media would they use. Lift would definitely use Tumblr, probably as a fandom or comedy blogger and her blog would certainly be food orientated. Wit i think would use twitter. his entire existence on the internet would be to insult people in short tweets Shallan would use DeviantArt no more to say about that! I feel Adolin, Kaladin and Danilar would be competing Youtubers (i'd subscribe to them!) How about the other characters, what would they use?
  18. So I read a Q&A the other day that said there was something special about Shallan's ability to "take" a memory and then use that memory to be able to recreate the scene perfectly later on. At first I thought there was nothing special about Shallan's artistic abilities other than her having a photographic memory and natural artistic skill, but then, in my reread of TWOK, I found this: Notice that Brandon used the word cultivated. I don't think it is a coincidence that he used this word and one of the shards on Roshar is called Cultivation. I think maybe Shallan's memory taking ability and artistic skill are somehow linked to Cultivation.
  19. What would the hair of a baby born of Adolin and Shallan look like. Would it be black speckled with blonde AND red, or would the red overpower the blonde or vice-versa (As a redhead I think the red would beat our the blonde of course). We haven't seen a description of a mixed Alethi having two alternate hair colors but it really seems that hair breeds true. Would they have 50% red hair then like 45% black and 5% blonde? Also Feather if you're reading this just replace Adolin with Renarin at will.
  20. I tried looking around and couldn't find anything on this, how did Shallan become a radiant, or at least start bonding pattern? I was under the impression that one could not fully bond a spren unless they were "broken".They could start to attract one but couldn't finish the bond. In the book she seems to have became a radiant after she killed her mother. But how could she summon pattern before breaking. And Shallan's mother couldn't have broke her because her becoming a radiant was the whole reason she attacked shallan in the first place. The reason this bothers me is that shallan references that as what broke her. Is this what her next truth will be about or am i missing something?
  21. Ok, in the thread Predictions for Stones Unhallowed I realized that maxal and I, with our theories and ramblings that contained the scenarios for weddings and Adolin's or Kaladin's future children, kind of strayed off the topic So as not to cluster that thread further and let it focus on what can happen in Stones Unhallowed (and not much later or even in the back five), I decided to create this thread - it's a place designed to post ideas and ramblings related to distant future (and the next generation of Kholins and their friends ). I feel obliged to warn you that quite propably some of said ramblings are long and rather useless (but hilarious - always funny to write and often also funny to read). Even the craziest idea can go here, it's healthy to share such things (even if sometimes only because laughing is healthy ). And if someone is ambitious - even some fan-fiction concerning future (I do like to read such things even if I don't feel that my english is good enough to write them myself). Under spoiler tags I'll put the things that I or maxal wrote in the forementioned thread. It goes with a pattern - what's in a quote is maxal's, the rest is mine. If someone else joined in this ramblings I'll mention who said it. Generally it's the story/ramblings of how maxal and I see the future for Adolin&Shallan and Kaladin(&Tarah) and their kids The ramblings on Kaladin and Tarah Ramblings on weddings and future in general So that's about it when it comes to our ramblings... There is also maxal's The Fashion at the Weddings, which I'll repost as well. I'll just remind again that the text about wedding and clothes is maxal's, I only wrote my comment at the bottom and that's the only thing I can claim. And that is all about it until now. Every theory and every amount of ramblings is welcome (following the course of thinking above or completely different).
  22. Since there's a poll about who Shallan will end up with, I did the same for Kaladin
  23. Anyone else from VA, anyone? Anyway, does Shallan have a Shardblade?? I just came across this little quote while rereading the book that I must have inexplicably skipped first time through because I did not remember it at all: Obviously, that sounds like a Shardblade. And this seems to imply, with "the fruit of her sin," that she obtained it from Does anyone have any theories on who he might be and who he was involved with? How did he come across both a Shardblade and a Soulcaster, and still be of such low ranking? It was mentioned that the men he was apparently involved with had strange diamond tattoos on their hands. Could they be related to those creatures Shallan (and supposedly Jasnah) sees? I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas.
  24. A bit far fetched here and I'm probably reading too much into it.. also, not sure how to mark a spoiler here yet so beware below if you haven't read WOR: do you think that perhaps wit didn't meet shallan until she hugged him in the war camps? he just seemed so off guard then, and when he first saw her as a child he was surprised to see her. think there's any chance that is because he had met her in her future for the first time and was surprised to see her there as a child? maybe that's how he knew to evoke lightweaving out of her in particular. again, I know this is far fetched. just a thought.
