  1. It's mostly all in the title. If Kaladin somehow went brain dead, would Shai(if she somehow was on Roshar) be able to recreate his soul? I mean (Emperor's Soul) He hides a lot of his trauma, and puts on a front of "I'm doing fine!". The question is how well does he hide it... Also, I don't know if any one person knows all of his experiences.

  4. NOTE: This post contains some spoilers for the story "The Emperor's Soul" and the Mistborn books including Secret History I recently started rereading some of the other Cosmere books after RoW (Elantris, Mistborn, portions of Arcanum Unbounded). After reading "The Emperor's Soul" I have come to a conclusion that I sure hope is true. After the big reveal in Rhythm of War regarding Thaidakar's identity, I am convinced that Shai is going to turn up as a Ghostblood. There are a few reasons for this: 1) Shai is the perfect crew member for Kelsier - Kelsier has a penchant for gathering specialists in every arena, and no one is a greater specialist in Forging than Shai. Even beyond using the actual magical skill of Forging, she is stunningly skilled in overall forgery and subterfuge of many types that would deeply interest Kel. 2) Like Kel, Shai has issues with Hoid - We know from "The Emperor's Soul" that Shai ended up being captured in the first place because Hoid sold her out (as the Imperial Fool, aka Wit 1.0) in order to steal the Moon Scepter, a sort of key to access all of the investiture related powers on Sel. She is on a mission to hunt him down. We know Kel & Hoid also have potential unfinished business after their volatile confrontation at The Well of Ascension. The enemy of my enemy is my friend--Kel & Shai are natural allies. 3) Sel might be the easiest planet for Kel to worldhop to--or at least meet Shai from - I say "easy" with caution due to the dangerous nature of worldhopping to Sel (due to the investiture storm caused by the splinters of Devotion & Dominion in the cognitive realm), but we know from Secret History that the IRE were able to set up a base (theoretically connected to the Dor somehow--long extension cord? ) on the edge of Scadrial's portion of Shadesmar. This begs the question if Scadrial is "close" to Sel's Shadesmar. We still don't know how someone would worldhop to Sel, but it seems reasonable that either A) Kel might have figured out how to do so, B ) He at least got to Sel's Shadesmar zone (perhaps to some sort of safe haven there?), or C) Shai managed to worldhop somehow and they met elsewhere. Addendum: We know the Ghostbloods have connections on Sel. It is also significant that Mraize has a Seon which further connects them to that world. 4) They share a unique connection in their scars - It really stood out to me this time that Shai shares a unique trait with Kel--the arm scars left on her by the Bloodsealer's cuts. She was cut every single day over the course of around 90-something days. Kel's title as Lord of Scars may be a point of interesting connection with Shai. 5) She would make quite the formidable foil to Shallan - The similarities between forgery and both lightweaving & soulcasting are striking. Shai is a considerable con-artist even without Forgery, but if she & or Kel were to figure out how to overcome the connection problem with Sel (something we already know Kel is interested in and may have figured out related to the discovery of those Nicrosil excisor medallions), she might be able to access Forgery to a limited degree off-world. Shai and Shallan are both artists, both talented at disguise, and both have the ability to affect the souls of objects in different ways. With Shallan having potentially allied with Wit rather than Thaidakar, a conflict could be very interesting. 6) We know that Brandon has confirmed Shai will show up again--potentially as a worldhopper - The Cosmere has grown much more complex since some of the big reveals in Rhythm of War. Of all the various factions at work among the Cosmere-aware, the Ghostbloods seems the most likely one to match Shai's skills and personality as opposed to the 17th Shard, IRE, etc. We know she's showing up again--while anything can happen, this theory seems like a strong possibility. What are your thoughts? Any other connections (or things I totally missed)?
  5. Finished! Nine characters from eight Shardworlds! From left to right: Dusk from First of the Sun / Kaladin from Roshar / Vasher from Nalthis / Hoid from Yolen / Harmony (Sazed) / Khriss from Taldain / Shai from Sel / Vin from Scadrial / Silence from Threnody This piece is also celebratory art! Happy Chinese New Year 2016 (Year of the monkey)! At first I drew these characters mainly for an online fantasy magazine because they kind of let me (as translator of WoR) introduce Stormlight and the whole Cosmere series in their New Year issue, which meant I’d better add some festival stuff. So here it is - Characters from eight different Shardworlds wishing you a Happy New Year! In China, this is a popular traditional gesture when people give New Year’s greetings. It’s called 作揖 (zuò yī, in spoken language: zuō yī). When you do this, you make a bow with hands folded in front of you and greet others at the same time. Raise your folded hands and then lower them. The motion can be repeated several times. For men, they should use their left hand to cover their right hand (In ancient China, men tended to hold weapon with their right hand, so they covered it when saluting, to reduce hostility and show respect.), while for women, they should do it otherwise and it’s better not to clench the left hand into a fist (You can learn this from the picture above.). If you do it wrong, you will convey some ominous meaning. Please be careful # # # Heck, so many tags! Also seriously, I think we may need a Cosmere crossover art album
  6. I am going to start this topic with the most auspicious declaration of: Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! This is my FAVOURITE Cosmere work! *clears throat* now on with the actual topic. Wan ShaiLu, the Forger is arrested while attempting to steal a painting in the capital of the Rose Empire, where Hoid, disguised as the Fool, ensures her capture (while stealing the Moon Sceptre himself) so as to force her to fulfill the task that would be thrust upon her as a condition for her release. Which raises the question of why Hoid would consider this important enough to require his attention? Would a change of Emperors be so great a political upheaval? But much more interestingly, when Shai does successfully Forge a new soul for the Emperor, what exactly does the Emperor become? Does Ashravan qualify as a Cognitive Shadow? Or is the new Ashravan truly a new Ashravan? (which is kind of terrifying) When the injury rendered Ashravan in a vegetative state, was it more akin to gluing something broken back up together or perhaps more like patchwork stitching? ~Mistborn spoilers~ That is, was Ashravan still alive in a way in the Cognitive? Was his Identity damaged in some way? Did Shai just resurrect him? ~Warbreaker spoilers~ Did she just create a new Spiritweb or repair the original? Had the original Ashravan passed into the Beyond at this point? This WoB indicates that death in the Cosmere is a rather complicated affair: ~Mistborn & Warbreaker spoilers~ Brandon has made comparisons between these three situations before: What exactly is Ashravan now?
  7. I just finished listening to Emperor’s Soul, and I’m a little confused about something. Shai implies that the more ‘plausible’ and ‘correct’ a Forgery is, the longer it will tend to last before having to be restamped. But the ending of the book implies that she managed to recreate the Emperor’s soul so perfectly (other than one or two things that the book implies would have eventually happened anyway) that for all intents and purposes the term ‘forgery’ arguably doesn’t even apply. She didn’t so much create something new and ‘false’ as recreate what was already supposed to be there. Which should seem to suggest that the ‘forgery’ should have been if not permanent then at least lasted a very long time, but for some reason he has to be restamped every morning (at least for a while) or he’ll become a vegetable again. Why exactly is this the case? Why should a perfect recreation of what a person is supposed to be only last a day whereas something trivial like turning a chamber pot into an ornate vase last indefinitely? Is this just a plot hole or did I miss something?
  8. This is a thought dump for trying to figure out if Roshar Humans (some of the breeds) ever actually reincarnated in the Tranquiline Halls. We learned so much about spren-incarnation in OB, and I am left wondering if the Tranquiline Halls was just an idea stolen from Singers, or if humans once actually were utilizing reincarnation. Full Spoilers for all Cosmere Below: Specifically Emperor's Soul, Wax and Wayne Arc, and Oathbringer Basically, I want to know which shard allows for reincarnation. Did Odium grant the power to the Singers once the Humans switched gods? Did cultivation give the power to the singers, and Odium corrupted it? Is reincarnation via spren or via soul a Comsere-wide possibility? Here are some thing live noticed. Ideas: 1. In the Wax and Wayne arc we learn that certain people working for Trell can "serve again in the next realm". So it is possible for humans to serve again in some manner, so the Tranquiline Halls could be that or something similar to that. Do humans serve as shadows, or is there a cognative realm battle going on, or do some talanted humans reincarnate in bodies using Spren-Magic, Breath Magic, Forging Magic, or Hemalurgic Magic? - did Shai reincarnate the emperor of the Rose Empire? Would something similar be effective in a war? Could we bring back someone that way? 2. Since at least the beginning of the Oathpact, the singers could be reborn in a parshman. Eventually, the Oathpact stops the Singers from immediately re-spawning, and for a long time they were forced to live on in Damnation, waiting for their next desolation. It is unclear if spren-incarnation is something that Singers could do naturally before any shards arrived, or if they were invested by Odium, Honour, and or Cultivation at some point and given the ability. - did the humans learn this idea from the Singers and place it in their religious ideals. 3. At least some heritages of human were minions of Odium in the past. Odium must have granted them magic in some form. Did Odium allow humans to reincarnate on Ashyn/Braize in order to be more destructive? Which powers did humans have when they fled Ashyn/Braize for Roshar? 4. At least Ten Humans were given the power to reincarnate after a death. Who is copying whom with this magic? Did Odium originally have reincarnating humans, then the humans switched to team honour, Odium then reincarnates Singers, and then Ten Heralds then gain the ability to reincarnate as well? Or did the Singers reincarnate first and then the Heralds made a deal to copy the same process? - It doesn't seem that humans need to steal someone else's body in order to reincarnate, so how do heralds do it? Is it fuelled by Odium, or another shard? 5. When the Stormvengers were in Shadesmaar, humans were dying near them, yet we never once saw a person pass between the Cognative realm onto the spiritual realm on Roshar. Sure, we didn't see anyone die next to a character, but you would think our heroes would have seen someone pass on. They did see candles go out, but no one noticed a spirit. Is this because Honour wasn't there to meet them, or is it because their spirits are going somewhere else? What do you think? Are the Tranquiline Halls real for the average Human?
  9. Has anyone else noticed a similarity between Shallan's reliance on alternative personalities to cope with new and stressful situations and Shai's essence marks to create new histories for herself, psychologically both seem to use the same technique. This is from Emperors New Soul but it could almost be Shallan's internal dialogue. I wonder if Realmatically there is any similarity between Shallan's Lightweaving and Forgery.

  11. From the album: The Emperor's Soul - Visual Development

Here is my visual interpretation of the Imperial Prison (or more like: a part of it), designed to keep forgers locked up securely. As I am not sure how many of you here about behind the scenes/concept work for the entertainment industry, a short explanation: The photo references on the side are additional explanation and texture information for people who might translate the 2D concept into a 3D work (i.e. for a computer game or animated movie). In this case there are obviously not for any real production but as I am using this as a portfolio project, that's how I am going to present it anyway.

  12. From the album: The Emperor's Soul - Visual Development

For my new portfolio project, I decided to do some Visual Development artwork based on Brandon Sanderson’s novella „The Emperor’s Soul“. I did my best to stick to the descriptions I found in the book, with some artistic license where necessary, or whenever I couldn't find much visual descriptions. I will try to keep my descriptions spoiler free, but I hope everyone who read the book will recognize the art. To kick it off, here is a key scene of Shai & Gaotona in Shai's room. More to come!

  14. Hi guys! First of all, thank you for reading this, and please don't be so harsh if you find some mistakes-English is not my first tongue. So, at the very end of The Emperor's Soul, Shai tells Gaotana that she might use her Way Out Essence Mark so she can forget her involvement with the Empire, but then, at the very end of the story, we discover that she has a new task, and, I quote, that is "tracking down the Imperial Fool, who had betrayed her". We know that the Imperial Fool is no other than Hoid, and that, in the deleted prologue, he tells Shai that they shall never meet again. This could be the end of the quest for any other character, but Shai has a huge understanding of the Realmatic Theory and is quite resourceful, so if she is out there hunting Hoid, my money is on her. In order to achieve this, she would have to hunt Hoid across the Cosmere, and become a worldhopper like him to get out of Sel to begin her quest. So, I think she is a strong candidate for worldhopper, and perhaps she would even end up joining the Seventeenth Shard just to find him. What do you think about this? Is it plausible, or is just plain crazy?
  15. Hi everyone! First of all, I hope this is the right sub-forum… I am currently visualizing the environments of The Emperor’s Soul, as a base for my next portfolio project. More specifically, I am starting with Shai’s Room(s), Shai’s Wing of the Palace, and the Emperor’s quarters/wing (more to come!). Also vases/urns and other artifacts that are mentioned in the novella. Here’s my problem. I found a visual style to work with (heavily inspired by Asian architecture of course), but the details are giving me problems. I am working of descriptions like these: I have pretty good references what reliefs and inlays in Temples/Palaces can look like (see attachments), but I do not want to just take images of Chinese patterns, dragon reliefs and folklore and put them on the hallways and urns for TES. I would really like the designs to fit the world. But I am also at a loss what kind of imagery would be used in the Rose Empire (except for a phoenix headbord bed), as the novella doesn’t mention too many (visual) things other than the main plotline. So that’s where I would really appreciate your help! It has been a long time since I read Elantris, but if I understand it correctly, Elantris and Rose Empire don’t really share much other than being on the same world. Would the Anchient Lamio / Rose Empire people integrate Aons in their art and designs? There are hills in the city, and (I think) mountains nearby. That’s a starting point for what people might base their decorations on. But it’s also not really unique to Sanderson’s worlds. I’m a bit at a loss here, and if I can find nothing else, I’ll make up something myself to make it look more than a real world mashup of Chinese Architecture. But if you can help me brainstorm something that would fit the Cosmere, I would appreciate it a lot. What do you imagine the reliefs, inlays, and artifacts/urns and other decorations would depict in the setting of TES?

  20. Alright guys. This one is for you. A note before you read this is that Swimmingly is the one who made the discovery. I just think that a different title for the post might spread the word more, and I want to get reactions. So. In the google play or the ibooks version of the Emperor's Soul, there is now a deleted scene, featuring none other than our one and only Hoid taunting Shai. From this point on, I'm going to assume that you've read this, because it's pretty much canon. First off, I'm now positive that we will see Shai again, and I'm even more certain that she has a fascinating backstory of deep cosmerical relevance. Also, I'm curious as to what the Scepter entails, and I'm curious to what timeline the Emperor's Soul is in, and where it stands in relation to Elantris. Is it possible that Hoid was only in Elantris because it was on the way? But I digress. Onward, to one bonus, swaggilicious, chapter of Sanderson, with Hoid as you've seen him before, and you will see him many times hereafter!
