  1. Well, the Stabby Award winners have been announced, and Brandon won three! Shadows of Self won Best Novel of 2015, Perfect State won Best Short Fiction of 2015, and Writing Excuses won Best Related Work of 2015! That's awesome! Link
  2. Shadows of Self is the latest Mistborn novel and the sequel to The Alloy of Law, which came out all the way back in 2011. It's been a crazy long time. There's been plenty of Brandon Sanderson to read since then, but my first love is Mistborn, so I've yearned for this for... well, four years. Fortunately, it's fantastic. If you liked The Alloy of Law--particularly the idea of an urban fantasy thriller set in the Mistborn world--you'll love Shadows of Self. This time, Wax and Wayne continue their hunt for the Set, the shadowy organization seen in The Alloy of Law. Then, the murder of a huge portion of Elendel's criminal elite--including the governor's brother--pushes Wax onto the case, where he discovers that the person responsible is insanely dangerous. They need to find out what this person's plans are, before Elendel collapses in on itself. It's hard for me to talk about Shadows without comparing it to The Alloy of Law. Alloy was a pretty good urban/western fantasy thriller. Not fantastic, but the nostalgia of the Mistborn world made it quite good. For a standalone, though, the ending was unfulfilling. Alloy demanded a sequel, and now that we finally get it, it is so very satisfying. Shadows is quite similar to Alloy in style. They are both set in Elendel, both have a particular "case" to focus them, and are urban fantasy novels. For this reason I often compare these books to the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher, the gold standard of urban fantasy. Shadows takes the good elements of Alloy and makes them better, while cutting out some of the flaws that Alloy has. The result is a novel that is as awesome as Dresden books. I don't think it's hard to see why Shadows turned out better than Alloy, and it comes down to what Brandon does best: planning. Alloy was a short story that turned into a novel and it showed. In the time between writing Alloy and Shadows, Brandon fully planned out what he’s going to do with this time period. No longer are the Wax and Wayne novels only a bridge between the fantasy Mistborn trilogy and the 1980s Mistborn trilogy. With this extra planning, the Alloy era has become important to the world of Scadrial. While Shadows is still about the length of Alloy of Law (making it about half of the length of the books in the original trilogy), there’s a feeling of a grand design that Alloy didn’t really have, while maintaining the fast pace that Alloy set. Brandon knows with razor-sharp focus what this era of novels are supposed to be doing in the grand scheme of everything now. And boy, Shadows does it so well. I've always been a reader who loves a tightly crafted plot. It's one of the reasons I love Brandon’s novels. Well, Shadows not only has a tighter plot, but also a more interesting one than Alloy. The worldbuilding of Scadrial is important to events, and for you cosmere buffs, there will be plenty for you to love here. And Shadows' villain is terrifying for so many reasons that make Miles Dagouter look tame by comparison. One thing with Alloy and Shadows is that, like many other of Brandon's novels, there are multiple viewpoints. A lot of urban fantasy is written in a single first person viewpoints--like Dresden--and I felt that in Alloy, though it was fun to be in multiple characters' heads, it didn't make that book incredible. Not so with Shadows. Multiple viewpoints really enhances the book, and raises the overall tension. This tension is key, because it raises Shadows from being just another case file to something... more. Something legitimately awesome. Surprisingly, one way Shadows raises the tension is through politics. Sometimes Brandon goes way too in-depth of political intrigue, like with Elantris. Considering how bad politics can be in a story (cough, Star Wars prequels, cough), you realize how well Shadows does it. The political intrigue truly heightens the threat level. It's never distracting, and is always important. Elendel is in serious danger, so it makes sense that it is so essential to the plot. As much as I love plot, the soul of stories are the characters, and all the characters you love from Alloy have progressed in reasonable ways, with new levels of depth. Wax and his relationships advance in unexpected, but interesting, fashions. Wayne, hilarious as always, has a ton of depth that I did not expect. Marasi also really comes into her own. And speaking of Marasi, I've often seen people who dislike either Marasi or Steris. After Shadows, I've loved both. You really do need to read Alloy before Shadows, as there is critical character depth you'd miss without it, but Shadows is such a good sequel. It's crazy to think that before Words of Radiance, Brandon had only written one other epic fantasy sequel in his own worlds: The Well of Ascension. In my opinion, that’s the weakest book of the original trilogy, and Brandon's learned so much about writing sequels since then. Brandon takes the best of the series' predecessors and makes the sequels even better than one could hope. Shadows is faster paced, better plotted, and its worldbuilding more important and grander than Alloy. The characters advance in great ways, and the multiple viewpoints enhance this book substantially. Really, Shadows of Self perfects the formula of Alloy in every way, and is a truly wonderful novel because of it. Score: 17 metals out of 16. Note: Brandon actually used to call the original trilogy and the 1980s trilogy as the "first Mistborn trilogy" and "second Mistborn trilogy," with a third science fiction trilogy. Alloy didn't really have a place. Now, the different time periods are called eras, so the first trilogy is Era 1, and Alloy and Shadows are Era 2, with Era 3 and 4 set to be published in the future. Early copy provided by Dragonsteel Entertainment. Posted with their permission. Shadows of Self comes out on October 6th, 2015.
  3. As anyone who has read Shadows of Self knows, Bleeder is revealed to have a spike made from an unknown God Metal, originating from a shard that is neither Ruin, nor Preservation. This spike allowed her to fool Harmony. There are two ways I could image this coming about. A. Bleeder used a piece of a splintered Shard, and somehow gained the knowledge to use it. This is unlikely, since there are very few that Cosmere-literate. B. Bleeder met a Shard that willingly gave her a piece of it's power to mess up Harmony. If we pick the first option, it could either be Devotion, Dominon, Honor, or the other Shard Odium splintered. Again, I find this unlikely as only a Shard or Splinter would be able to give her the knowledge to use it. With the second option, I can only think of two that could possibly cause this: Autonomy (mildly suggested by Bleeders talk of 'freedom'), or Odium. Although, I am much more inclined to believe the metal belongs to Odium, considering that it is stated to have red on it. Most other people probably came to this conclusion also, but I figured I'd write it down since I haven't seen it anywhere else.
  4. (emphasis mine.) Birthdate is unknown. Leathery skin that she assumes is from being in the field could be naturally darker due to Terris ancestry. What is the likelihood that Aradel is quietly extending his age or perhaps is a kandra? Can we find other clues to refute/support this possibility?
  5. So a few people have asked Brandon what Wax's earring is made of, and he has not given a straight answer to anyone yet (Myself included. I asked him yesterday, as I hadnt seen the question asked since SOS came out. He said he would likely take questions on it during the tour for the next book). The earring is mysteriously not described in detail, even though it has significant screen time. Right now, I am assuming that it is the new Harmony God-Metal. I would think over 300 years, such a new metal would not be available in great quantities, or the location of the source is not otherwise known to people yet (Kandra may be another story), though there may be enough of a reserve for a few Pathian earrings.
  6. Note: I haven't read White Sand. If someone who's read it considers it plausible / impossible, please mention it below. Spoilers: Part for length, and part for SoS major spoilers (even though I don't have to).
  7. I'm just going to post this as a new topic because right now the discussion is spread across many threads. So after the climax, when Marasi is showing Wax the spike made of an unknown metal, and when she's talking to MeLaan about it, she comments that it is "one of the spikes [bleeder] was using". I've seen a lot of people assuming that this means she was using it at the time she died, and that "one of" means that she had other spikes in her (that she put there). While I'm not ruling this out as a possible interpretation, I think that it far from ironclad, and not the most likely possibility. Here are a few reasons. 1) We are told repeatedly, including by Harmony, that Bleeder only has one spike, that any above and beyond this would allow him to take control of her. It's entirely possible that the characters are wrong (less likely about Harmony, though he admits that he cannot see her consistently), but... 2) The characters, who knew that Bleeder was supposed to have only one spike, don't suddenly express surprise at finding two. If Harmony/MeLaan/TenSoon (and Wax) had all been wrong about this, Marasi might be expected to mention that. 3) Marasi calls the spike "one of the spikes she was using" (emphasis mine, obviously), which can imply that she's talking about one of the spikes she's been using for various powers. She doesn't say "one of the spikes she had in her" or something to that effect. This is lent further credence by the fact that... 4) The narrative constantly points out is that Bleeder has access to multiple spikes. When they find Idashwy, Wax points out that the antagonist might have any number of powers, or all of them. Furthermore, they know at least one place where Bleeder changed powers (where Wax was right before he saw her using Coinshot abilities), so they could have gone back there for the spike. But that's assuming she wasn't just carrying them all on her person at all times. They also know where she's been a lot of the time (or, at least, who she's been impersonating), so they could have conducted a search for her "stash." 5) It has been assumed that the "Trellium" spike is what allows her to avoid detection by Harmony. In fact, Harmony outright explains that this is because having god-like powers is "complicated." It isn't mysterious to Harmony, just frustrating. He and Wax have a good laugh over it. (I'll post more on this if I have time.) I do see some problems with this theory. One is how Bleeder is able to communicate with spiked people. This isn't an ability we have clearly seen a metal capable of doing. But it appears that Brandon has gone out of his way to avoid explaining this. The only clue we have, that I recall, is TenSoon's apparent surprise that Bleeder spoke to Wax directly, and the fact that he wasn't surprised (and knew about) Bleeder's ability to speak directly to Wax's mind. But I don't think this ability necessarily demands another spike, and if we assume the spike enables it, then that spike is doing two things according to the theories already proposed. The second... I forget right now, but it had something to do with the various powers Bleeder used. I plan to update this theory header as we get more discussion. Also, I anticipate a lot of people's questions at signings to pertain to this Trellium!
  8. Scene 1 Scene opens; Wax is sobbing into Steris' arms. After a while, Steris wordlessly gets up and walks out the way she came, leaving Wax sitting awkwardly staring at a fire. Scene 2 Scene opens; day, in the police station. Marasi: Hey MeLaan. I was thinking about the whole "Trell" thing. It's pretty alarming. MeLaan: Yeah, yeah. It's pretty serious. Did you see this cool spike I found? * proudly displays polka-dotted spike * Marasi: ...Where did you get that? MeLaan: Pulled it out of Wax's girlfriend while she was sleeping! Marasi: Give it back. MeLaan: Aww. Marasi: And when you're done with that, go back to your cell until you can tie a proper belt knot. MeLaan: Awww! Do I have to? Marasi: Our culture puts a lot of value in belt knots! But if you like I'll talk to Aladar about it. He's just standing by his desk looking dumb. Scene 3 Scene opens; a misty night on top of a tower. Lessie/Paalm is writhing around on the ground for some reason. Wax: Aaaugh! My love! What happened to you? Lessie / Paalm: Harmony is trying to stop taking over my brain, and it's killing me. If only someone could take this cursed magic bullet out of my head... Wax: Don't worry, I have just the tool for that! * points gun; gun goes into reverse, sucking out the magic bullet and safely loading it into a chamber * Wax: I am Harmony's surgical tool. * drops gun * Wax: Oh no! I dropped my bullet-sucking gun! Can you flit aimlessly in the clouds up here while I go pick it up? Then we can race back to the governor's mansion. Lessie / Paalm: Sure thing! Scene 4 Scene opens; night, on a stage before a churning crowd. Aladar: People of Elendel, after much deliberation, I have decided to clear this prisoner of his/her charge of being incapable of tying a belt knot. * crowd turns hostile, shouting and threatening to storm the stage * MeLaan: What is it with you people and belt knots? Aladar: Our culture puts a lot of value in them. MeLaan: Stop yelling at me, peasants! Do you have any idea how ridiculous it is for me to go to jail over knot tying? ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME? * crowd quiets * MeLaan: Huh. Shouting at the crowd makes them behave. Aladar: Wish we'd known that a while ago. You know, I bet they'll be content to go back to their downtrodden, overworked existence now. Hey, do you know where Marasi is? MeLaan: Nope, but I'm sure she's keeping out of trouble. Aladar: Good. I guess I'll go back to nervously pacing across your lawn now. MeLaan: And I'll shuck out of these bones. They smell like prison and failure. Scene 5 Marasi, somewhere else. Marasi: How dare you Soothe this angry lynch mob into being calm and relatively reasonable! Have you no respect for our culture? Set Soother: ...Could you stop pointing that gun at me? Marasi: ...okay. Scene 6 Interior of the governor's mansion, amidst a pile of corpses. Wax: Ha! Beat you back here! Paalm: You sure did! I had to stop on the way to get myself one of those bullet-sucking guns. * promptly uses gun to suck the bullets out of the dead bodyguards, healing them instantly. They immediately run out of the room. * Wax: YAY, YOU DID IT! Paalm: I KNOW! ISN'T FRIENDSHIP AWESOME? Wax: YOU SHOULD RUN FOR GOVERNOR! Paalm: ALRIGHT THEN, I WILL! Scene 7 Scene opens, somewhere dark. MeLaan: I'm considering what to do with my newfound freedom. Marasi: I'm considering the possibility that I tend to go a bit overboard with things. Wayne: I'm considering a dirty joke based on a comment you haven't made yet! ... MeLaan: I'm considering binding and gagging Wayne, then shoving him in a closet until Governor Paalm lets him out later. Marasi: I consider this a good plan. Scene 8 Scene opens; deep in the caves under the city. Wax: ...What am I even doing down here? TenSoon (in buff humanoid body): Oh, hai! I was hoping you could help me down here. Wax: Okay. What seems to be the problem? TenSoon: Oh, it's dreadful! Look at all these poor Hemalurgic abominations. I found them broken and dead down here and I need your help fixing them. Wax: Oh no! I'll help! TenSoon: Great! I'll put this one's spike back in while you use that gun of yours to suck the bullets out. * a few minutes of frenzied working later * TenSoon: There you go, little cutie pies! Good as new! Look how happy they are! I've never heard such happy howls! Wax: And you're a thousand years old! * TenSoon zips into a shaggy dog body for no apparent reason * TenSoon: Anyway, thanks for the help Wax. Though in truth, the poor Hemalurgic travesties weren't the only reason I wanted to talk to you. Wax: What seems to be the problem? TenSoon: It's... it's about your girlfriend. She's done the most dreadful things. I... I can barely say. Wax (blood running cold): ...What has she done? What has she done? TenSoon: She... she... she... she erased the blood-written footnotes out of our antique book collection! Wax: No! Not my Lessie! To be continued... Actually, probably not. I don't believe in drugs, but I can't get any weirder than this while sober. So just ignore this.
  9. Howdy, y'all. Spent yesterday evening at Murder By The Book, the best hole-in-the-wall independent bookseller in Texas. Picked up Shadows of Self (and a signed copy of Jim Butcher's new Aeronaut's Windlass) and enjoyed my second Brandon Sanderson signing event. A quick aside, both Butcher and Sanderson recommended Brian McClellan's The Powder Mage Trilogy as their number 1 current recommendation. Probably going to read that soon based on their high praise. I won't give a complete minute-by-minute recounting as there were about 5 people video recording the entire signing, and I have a splitting headache at the moment. Best Q&A, crowd friendly question was asking about how the Brandon does the blocking for fight scenes like in Mistborn. He answered that he writes the emotional cues for the fight scene first, then fills in the punches, kicks and dodges. The reading was a selection from Stormlight 3, specifically This is as near as I can remember the exact wording for my question as I don't have it recorded and the lady doing the sticky notes wasn't letting folks write questions on them by the time I got up to the line (#79 of 200+ and it was already 8:45pm. Store closes at 6pm.) Heck, I got a dirty look for requesting that he write "Merry Christmas!" in the copy of Firefight that's a gift. Me: "Howdy." Brandon: "Hi there. Thank you for welcoming me back to Houston earlier. That was nice." Me: "Always welcome." Store Employee: "Photo or?" Me: No, thanks. Line is long and "Do unto others, as you'd have them do unto you." Brandon: Do you have a question for me? Me: (Stammering) Well, yes. hmm. We... we've seen someone with a hemallurgic spike communicate or under the control of Ruin or Harmony. Can other spikes communi, sorry no people, well Shards... ugh so nervous." (Trying to get it accurate.) Brandon looks a little confused at me, but smiles. "Can other *Shards* communicate or control those individuals?" (I excitedly, but rudely, interrupt a bit) To what extent? What about on other planets than Scadrial? He looked at me expectantly for another question. I stammered, "Oh well, thank you. I wasn't expecting that plain an answer. I thought I'd get something more cryptic, so I don't have a follow up. ... Brandon patiently smiled. Me: "Umm, My son turns 1 this weekend. Will the Elantris sequel be out before he graduates college? Brandon laughed. I thanked him for coming to visit. We're pretty much BFFFFFFFs now. I gave my other question to my friend, but she was #55 in line so I didn't hear the answer, so I'll wait to get her to write it out for me.
  10. It's the most wonderful time of year again, Brandon has just released a book and the fandom is buzzing. That's right, today Shadows of Self and the 10th Anniversary Edition of Elantris have finally released! Not only that but they are pretty storming awesome. I'm still reeling from a marathon reading session of Shadows of Self (that ending, oh Harmony). If you are still on the fence on whether you want to get either of them check out our spoiler free review of Shadows of Self and our coverage on the Anniversary Edition and its beautiful new maps. Really though, just go and get them now. Once you've read the books you can join in on the discussion in our reaction threads for Shadows of Self and Elantris. In other news Ben McSweeney is doing a reddit AMA over in /r/fantasy today, the question thread is already up here. Ben is a fantastic artist who has worked on a lot of Brandon-related projects. He's done the Shallan's Sketchbook pages for Stormlight, illustrations and covers for the Mistborn Adventure Game, and illustrations for the Rithmatist. Not to mention he worked on the broadsheets in Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self. Please go and give him some love by doing what we Brandon fans do best, ask questions. Brandon is also currently in the midst of a twitter chat with iBooks about Shadows of Self, check out his profile feed for his responses. Check out our forum topics here to discuss Ben's AMA, and here for the iBook twitter chat.
  11. Shadows of Self is now only a week away! (Or well for most of us). Brandon in a recent blog post has mentioned that in the UK while Shadows is being released in ebook and audiobook form on Oct 8, two days after the US release, the official UK print release will not be until the 15th. On a happier note Tor.com has just posted the next preview chapter, and Harmony is it a doozy. Check it out here! Last Friday we reported that Tor.com posted the cover for Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians Book 5: The Dark Talent. Well earlier today the cover artist, Scott Brundage, posted the full wrap-around version of the art (without any obscuring text) on his twitter. It's pretty cool. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview and here to discuss the cover!
  12. Earlier this week we reported about a change in policy with regards to release parties at BYU. Specifically they are instituting a new "digital line", which was just posted. You can sign up here. One important note, if you want to be entered into the raffle for a number between 1-100 you must sign up within the first 24 hours (i.e. between Friday at noon and Saturday at noon, Mountain time). This form is also the place where you can sign up to volunteer, if you wish to do so. In other news it appears that Steelheart is getting a new hardcover release. As we know Steelheart received new US cover art when it got released in paperback, the covers for Firefight and Calamity then continued in the new style. This new release is a hardcover of Steelheart with the "new" paperback design. This means that hardcover owners now have an opportunity to have a matching set. According to Peter this is not an actual reprinting but rather "a rejacketing of warehouse copies of the first printing hardcover". Check out our forum topics here to discuss the digital line, and here the new Steelheart release!
  13. We are still a fortnight away from the release of Shadows of Self but luckily the folks over at Tor.com have posted another chapter to help tide us over. Check out Chapter 5 here! I for one think it is a great chapter, with sequences from all three main viewpoints (Wax, Wayne, and Marasi) that really start to dig into who they are as characters and their backstories. I get the feeling though, that we really ain't seen nothin' yet... Check out our forum topic here to discuss the chapter preview!
  14. Today, Brandon wrote a blog post about the Shadows of Self release events. We've talked recently about the Weller's Book Works signed copies, but what was most interesting about Brandon's blog post is information about the BYU release party for Shadows of Self. This might not affect most of you, but hey, we are the hardcore Brandon fans, so this is something worth noting. This year, there will not be camping in front of the BYU bookstore. This is a huge change, as people have camped since 2010 with The Way of Kings. (There were release parties before, but camping started then.) I personally came for Alloy of Law and Words of Radiance's release party, and they were a ton of fun. We even have a a ludicrously giant tent for the purpose of camping there, as you can see in the image there. Instead of your low number being determined by when you arrive prior to release, for this release there is going to be a "digital line". It's done rather effectively, because instead of the #1 copy going to the person who refreshes for the link the fastest, the lowest 100 numbers will have a raffle system. If you join the digital line within the first 24 hours, you will be in the raffle for one of the lowest 100 numbers. The higher numbers will be determined by the order you entered this digital line. So, what this means is that there's no reason to camp at BYU. At all. You need to enter this digital line. You also need to preorder Shadows of Self with the BYU bookstore by October 1st. To do this, go here and select "Pick Up Signed & Numbered Copy at Oct. 5 Event," or you can go to the store itself. The digital line opens this Friday, September 18th, at around noon (I assume at Mountain Daylight Time, which is Brandon's timezone). We will tweet and link it out when that appears available. Then, you need to go to the BYU bookstore on October 5th, any time from 8:00am to 9:00pm to pick up your number. Then, the party will begin at 10:00pm. As someone who has enjoyed camping before the release, it was always a lot of fun, and I'm sad it is different this time. It was always special to meet the hardcore fans who came early, and especially to see how far people went to get there. (Of course, many who camped were local.) The night before the release was also great, because a ton of people arrived, and everyone was exhausted the Monday morning when the BYU bookstore handed out numbers. You were exhausted for the release because you were so excited the night before. It's really sad this is gone. (It was also fun that Josh and Mi'ch generally ran the signups, but that was exhausting for them. On the plus side, Utah can be quite cold. Alloy was extremely cold, and even Words of Radiance in March was cold. I'm going to enjoy not setting up a tent and taking it down early in the morning. Regardless of the community aspect, it is really nice to stay in relative comfort. Peter, Brandon's assistant, said on Facebook about the changes to the release parties: And also: So we might see old-style release parties at some point, but not for Shadows. In other news, the Elantris re-release (which according to Brandon's blog is officially titled "Elantris Tenth Anniversary Author's Definitive Edition) also is coming out on October 6th. One of our administrators, Zach, called the BYU bookstore and they said that Elantris would be available at the release, too. Cool! Discuss this post on the forums!
  15. Shadows of Self is only three weeks a way! Following on from last week Tor.com has posted Chapter 4. Check it out here. This one picks up right after Chapter 3 leaves off (at an incredibly intense moment). I do have to admit that it was very exciting to finally find out what happened next. In other news Wellers Book Works has posted the pre-order announcement for Signed and Numbered editions of Shadows of Self. This is a great opportunity for fans who won't be able to see him on tour (see here for the full list of events) to get a signed copy. If you want it personalized act quickly as the deadline for personalizations is tomorrow. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the chapter preview!
  16. Shadows of Self is officially less than a month away! (Check our post here to see Brandon's tour schedule.) With the hype starting to tick up Tor.com has posted Chapter 3 (following their release of the prologue and Chapters 1 and 2 a couple months ago). Check the preview out here! (Do note that a version of this was posted as part of 2013's Steelhunt, but this does cover the last of the Steelhunt excerpt. So if anymore previews are posted it will be entirely new material.) In other news Ben McSweeney, cosmere artist extraordinaire, will be doing an AMA over on reddit at /r/fantasy on October 6 (i.e. the release day for Shadows of Self). Ben is the artist responsible for Shallan's Sketchbook pages in The Stormlight Archive, the broadsheets in The Alloy of Law (and Shadows of Self), artwork for Crafty Games' Mistborn Adventure Game, as well as being the illustrator for The Rithmatist. Check out our forum topics here to discuss the chapter preview, or here to discuss Ben's AMA!
  17. First up, Rebecca Lovatt over at The Arched Doorway has just posted a fantastic new interview with Brandon that took place earlier this year at Minicon. Highlights include an embarrassing story from Brandon's youth, a discussion on the setting of Dark One, an update on White Sand, and tantalizing hints about the future of the cosmere! Shadows of Self is already a little over a month away, which means that Brandon will soon be on the road again. Tor posted the schedule for the US leg of the tour a few weeks ago and today Gollancz has posted the UK leg. Also included in Gollancz's announcement was a mention of special lanyards being give away at the UK stops which according to the announcement can be "personalized with cards from either the Reckoners, Mistborn, or Stormlight Archive series". This likely refers to the special punch-out figure cards of Szeth, Regalia, Obliteration, and Newton Brandon gave out during the Words of Radiance and Firefight tours. Which would indicate that he's planning to do something similar for this tour as well. Remember if you are planning to go to any of these signings to follow the included links (or go to the Events page on Brandon's website) to find out that location's policies. Some of these events are ticketed or require the purchase of Shadows of Self from the store hosting the event. 18. Tor today has released the prologue for Shadows of Self, the sequel to The Alloy of Law. Chapter one and two is now available too! I shall spoil nothing of it here, so you best just read it. You know, if you want. Shadows of Self comes out October 6th in the US and October 8th in the UK. After that, we will get The Bands of Mourning in January. With this plus Stormlight 3 news that Brandon occasionally tweets, the rest of this year will be really fun. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the prologue, here for chapter 1, and here for chapter 2!
  19. I'm going to pre-order it and Bands of Mourning soon. Is that a good idea or should I wait until it gets cheaper? Is anyone else going to order it?
  20. In The Hero of Ages, the phrase "shadow of self" was used in referencing the sliver of Preservation's consciousness. Could the next book be talking about the returning slivers of Ruin and Preservation? In that case could the "The Lost Metal" be atium? The schedule for the return of atium to the Pits of Hathsin would approximately line up. I know it's not very solid theory, but the stakes are going to have to be higher the in The Alloy of Law.
  21. Brandon has written a big blog post today. Well, actually, he's written a great deal, but today he wrote a blog post about what he spent 2014 doing. Some things are expected, like Firefight, Legion: Skin Deep, The Aztlanian (Rithmatist 2). But then there were some other things. He not only finished Shadows of Self, the sequel to Alloy of Law, but also wrote the next book after that, titled Bands of Mourning. Shadows will be released October 2015, and Bands will be released very shortly after in January 2016. Are you freaking pumped for how exciting 2015 will be? Sure, I know you're waiting for Stormlight 3, but get excited, guys. From Brandon's blog: In addition, he also wrote book five of Alcatraz, and he's happy with it, but there's no firm release date.Calamity (the third Reckoners book) is next up, and then Brandon will be spending basically all of 2015 on the third Stormlight book. He also spoke about his next projects, including timing on the Elantris sequel, Warbreaker sequel, and more. Most interestingly about the Elantris sequel: We are getting so much cosmere. Those are the major highlights. Other highlights include Silence Divine being downgraded to a novella, and Dragonsteel won't be worked on until Stormlight is done in its entirety. If you didn't click the link above, why don't you check it out again: http://brandonsanderson.com/state-of-the-sanderson-december-2014/ Get excited.
  22. There doesn't seem to be a speculation page for the next mistborn novel, Shadows of Self. So I've decided to start one. First of all, many of my theories are based of the content already released. If you have not read the first 2 chapters of Shadows of Self, then read it here. OK, so it seems fairly obvious that this novel focuses on Wax, Wayne & Marasi vs. 'The Set', a group led by Wax's uncle. However, everything from here is pure speculation, but here goes. The aim of the 'Vanishers' stealing the goods was to financially cripple House Tekiel, which means that they would have probably been able to prevent the something they are trying to achieve from occuring. Then, there are the kidnappings. This is probably part of the scheme, and due to the fact that they are all part of the same Allomantic bloodline, and that they are all women, it seems likely that they are planning to 'breed' Allomancers. This means that it would be a very long term plan. I have a hunch that the climax of the book will be the wedding. The way that the wedding seems to be at the forefront of things despite super-evil uncles trying to take control of the world just makes me think that. I also have a hunch that there is a secret about Steris. The way Marasi said so confidently that Steris wasn't an Allomancer makes me think that there is a story behind it, which might come out in this novel. However, she still might be a Ferring. Now we come to Miles's last words, talking about people of 'red and gold' coming bearing 'the final metal'. What the 'red and gold' means, I can't begin to guess, but 'the final metal' makes me think that there may be one more metal Brandon has kept close to his chest. And finally, Bloody Tam's re-emergence. I have a feeling that he is a Seer (Atium Misting) who has found some Atium somehow, (remember, when Kelsier destroyed the Pits of Hathsin, it was meant to stop Atium growing for 300 years, which is the amount of time that has passed since The Final Empire, so perhaps the mines might be in the new world) and is working for the Set in exchange for... something. They're all the theories that I have. Feel free to post any of your own.
  23. I was rereading The Hero of Ages and stumbled across this: It looks as though "shadow of self" is another term for Sliver. And what/who is the shadow being discussed by the Kandra in this context? The mist spirit Preservation? Might we see a Harmony-spirit wandering in the Elendel Basin soon?
  24. I'm not sure if we're allowed to talk about excerpts Brandon has read from unpublished works, but he links to the video of him reading it on his website, so I figured it might be ok. If not please let me know. Anyway, in his reading of Shadows of Self there seems to be a book that is written by Marsh about Hemalurgy. That in itself is cool, because it means we might find out more about the most mysterious of the Metallic Arts, but the small portion of it we get to hear sounds like Marsh is saying that Hemalurgy has changed and that it's no longer evil. I'm wondering what exactly he means by that, and what all is involved with the change. Is the change simply that those with hSpikes in them now hear Harmony instead of Ruin? I've been wondering about that, and I don't think all of the violence and sadism of the Koloss and the Inquisitors could be from Ruin whispering in their ears. I think I saw someone else hint at this idea before, but basically it's that those with an hSpike get a little of the intent (either Ruin or Harmony) which constantly affects them, even when not actually hearing the whispers. The stronger the mind of the person the more they can resist this intent, hence the reason Ruin frequently had to focus on Marsh. So, is this change simply that the whispers and the intent coming through the hSpike is now Harmony? Or has more changed about Hemalurgy? After all, if that's all that's changed, there's still the fact that Hemalurgy is as Marsh put it "messy". Could something have changed to make it less so? Perhaps the spikes no longer have to go through the person's heart to steal investiture from them? Perhaps it could go through other parts of their bodies, which they have a chance of surviving? Or perhaps it's changed in some other way? I don't know. Anyway, food for thought.
