  1. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

This is the skyeel from Roshar, with much artistic licenses added because I was having too much fun visualizing them! It started out as just skyeel, which I decided to expanded into three species to have some more species diversity, and a more natural feeling when populating the world, like a city park would have pigeons, sparrows and starlings. Besides the Common Skyeel, there is the Greater Skyeel, and Lesser Skyeel, because I am great at naming things like that. The Common Skyeel has a difficult balance to strike – it needs to not compete in coolness with the Greater Skyeel, which is set at boss level, but also not as drab and blending-in as the Lesser Skyeel despite it being the most … well, commonly seen around by people! Like a seagull, but cooler, but not too cool. For that reason Common Skyeel remains the only design that has the same color, pattern, and size between female and male. It is also the last of the three I designed, but somehow ended up being the standard to which I adjust the other two Skyeel designs to make the Greater fittingly boss-like, and the Lesser accordingly humble. That seemingly little egg there took me a while to settle on! So I must ramble about it here. Skyeel is a fish, that flies in air, taking up the same niche as birds do on Earth. So does it still lay eggs? What shape and surface if they're exposed to the elements? How does the baby break out? Does skyeel birth live pups like some sharks do? What is the morphology - the baby looks exactly like adult but miniature (sail fish), baby looks partially like adult (birds), or a complete metamorphosis (tadpole/frog)? When everything is possible, it's impossible to just settle on one. But I had to, so I did, otherwise my life cannot go on... There are a total of 6 pages, and I'm posting them here in set of 3 so as to not spam so much. If they're small or blurry, you can see bigger resolution on my Artstation
  2. Hey guys! I wanted to talk about some of the connections that I've been thinking about as we get ready for Rhythm of War! So I reread The Emperor's Soul and a few things stuck out to me. The most powerful soulstamp you can create is made from crystal, even more than soulstone, and animal inks work better than plant-based inks. Roshar has both in abundance. Crystal takes longer to carve and can be quite difficult but if you carved a gemstone or gemheart (which I think would work better, for some reason), and then entice a spren and trap it you could perhaps power soulstamps with stormlight. The Roshar continent is in the form of a Julia set which probably would help take forgery off Sel. We know that Odium is using some similar mechanics to Hemulurgy on Roshar but he also visited Sel and if he begins to use similar types of magic to bloodsealing and Dakhor magics, he could make incredible soldiers and creations. I've also thought about using Hemulurgic charged metals for fabrails. The problem is if they aren't coated in blood they begin to lose charge but perhaps some of the other mechanics blending could create a fix. Perhaps you can use the Dakhor bones instead of metals because it appears it act as a focus for the power of the gemstone and the Dor is focused through the twisted shape of the bones. So what are some Voidbinding and Hemulurgic Fabrials and Soulstamps?
  3. Okay, so i recently ask if there was a way for someone to get a nahel bond of Roshar, and answer was yes, but difficult. So what would happen if someone bonded with a spern, and then just left Roshar? Would the spern just stay and Roshar? Would the bond break, or would they just be waiting there? What happens if you go back to Roshar? Is the bond fine?
  4. Do we know if the Singers can change form by bonding with True spren? Is Nahel bond the only way a sapient spren can be bonded with?
  5. From the album: The Stormlight Artchive

The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it?
  6. What would Shadesmar (or the Rosharan cognitive realm) be like for an aquatic sapient being if it were to cross into the realm? Surely they would not appear and exists in a mess of beads, would they? Would the air above the water be beads to them? Or would the air still be air and the sub-aquatic terrain be beads? Asking for a friend
  7. As crabs, obviously. In celebration of Rhythm of War and the many crustaceans on Roshar. I may add color later, unsure if I want this to just be a quick drawing or if I want to put real effort in.
  8. I saw an interesting vlog, can’t remember the vlogger’s name, but he put out the thought that Mraize might be Kelsier of Mistborn...blew my mind. It’s probably way off, but interesting nonetheless. Gave a couple of reasons by tying Kelsier to Hoid our favorite world hopper. What do you think? By the way I’m new here and to the Cosmere. I came here through Sanderson’s contributions to the Wheel of Time series and now I’m hooked.
  9. Here we go again... This is a clue! If you don't know what I'm talking about, ignore this. If you do... Figure out the equation Roshar is based on, take the first two letters from the All right, first word, and the first and last letters from the last word, add ice at the end, and you'll get someone important. Then: DIFDL BMM NFNFT I'm going to try to make this as brief as possible: According to the Coppermind, Roshar (the continent) is the only continent on Roshar. (Now the link to the arcanum is missing, so this could be invalid, but I'm going to stick to it) But it specifically says continent as opposed to landmass. In addition to that we have this line, from an interlude from a man named Puuli in OB: Okay. I highly doubt that any boats on Roshar could withstand a highstorm, so it's most likely metaphorical. Meaning, that there would have to be another place for whoever they are to shelter. Also, because of the spread of crem, it would make sense that another landmass would be formed. In addition to all this we have the story of the Wandersail in tWoK, which is generally described as a Kaladin realization moment. But this is Sanderson. His writing, it is a riddle, wrappped in a mystery, inside an enigma. There's explicit mention of another significant landmass in the story, and it's probably alluding to one out of it as well. But above all this there is one final bit of speculation that is the linchpin of my thoughts. There is a Dawnshard missing. I could turn this into a rant about how most of the Dawnshards are probably the Unmade (hardly original, I know), or how the Dawnshards are probably Odious in nature. But whether you agree or not, it is most likely the Dawnshards are not in Aimia, (then they'd have probably been shown in the RoW preview chapters) and where else on Roshar would they be? Please post thoughts below. Edit: What I mean by significant is that it could: A, support life. And B, it could provide enough resources, and shelter that people (or singers) could survive, and eke out a living.

  12. Yes, technically there are already two other threads about this. I still started this one, since it's a little different topic: instead of speaking mainly about fabrials, here I wish to discuss the connection between every application of any metal in the four magic systems: allomancy, feruchemy, hemalurgy and fabrials. I might've lost myself in the middle of that sentence, I hope you understood me. anyway, what we've seen so far: Iron - A: pulls on metals. Fe: stores weight. H: steals strength. Fa: changes polarity (whatever that means)/attracts attribute. Steel - A: pushes on metals. Fe: stores physical speed. H: steals physical allomantic powers. Fa: same as Iron. Tin - A: enhances senses. Fe: stores senses. H: steals senses. Fa: diminishes attribute. Pewter - A: enhances strength and balance. Fe: storing physical strength. H: steals physical feruchemical powers. Fa: expresses attribute. Zinc - A: riots emotions. Fe: stores mental speed. H: steals emotional fortitude. Fa: manifests the spren more strongly. Brass - A: soothes emotions. Fe: stores warmth. H: steals cognitive feruchemy. Fa: makes the spren withdraw. Copper - A: hides allomantic pulses. Fe: stores memory. H: steals mental fortitude, memory, and intelligence. Fa: unknown. Bronze - A: allows to hear allomantic pulses. Fe: stores wakefulness. H: steals mental allomancy. Fa: warns of things getting close. Aluminum - A: wipes internal allomantic reserves. Fe: stores Identity. H: removes all powers. Fa: cuts connection, no other known function. Duralumin - A: quickly burns any burning metals in powerful burst. Fe: stores connection. H: steals connection and identity. Fa: unknown. Chromium - A: wipes out target's allomantic reserves. Fe: stores furtune. H: might steal destiny? Fa: unknown. Nicrosil - A: enhances allomantic burn of target. Fe: stores investiture. H: steals investiture. Fa: unknown. Gold - A: shows past self (or alternative present self). Fe: stores health. H: steals hybrid feruchemy. Fa: unknown, probably known in-world. Electrum - A: shows possible future of the burner. Fe: stores determination. H: steals enhancement allomancy. Fa: unknown. Cadmium - A: slows down time. Fe: stores breath. H: steals temporal allomancy. Fa: unknown. Bendalloy - A: speeds up time. Fe: stores energy. H: steals spiritual feruchemy. Fa: unknown. Now, there are patterns inside each magic system, if you look for it, though so far only allomancy and hemalurgy have sensible division for each metal. For now, it might be better to stick to discussing only the lower metals - the first eight, since we understand those the most, and know mostly all of their applications in the magic systems (lets use the acronym MS for that) in discussion. Tin is irregular because it's the only one that does exactly the same in the first three MSs. I can't actually see any thorough connection between one metal's applications in all the MSs, and it's a little late at night in my country, and since I'm also lazy I'll leave you to think over it.
  13. Not sure if the question makes sense, but do we know if the Sibling has to be originally from Roshar? Beyond the fact that they're presumably a godspren/Splinter, I can't find if there are any assumptions about that.
  14. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

I think the orchard got all but 2 sentences talking about it in all 3 Stormlight books. And yet for some reason it stuck in my mind ever since. I am still in the process of figuring out what I would like the Rosharan landscape to look like, and this is my 1st... wait no 2nd attempt at it. I kept it very earth like with all the green grass because 1.) roshar has grass and 2.) my eyes hurt after staring at red or purple meadows over and over for all the scenes. I would like to alienate the landscape more in next attempt
  15. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

This is the more boring sheet where I tried out shape languages and demonstrate to non-SA readers how that structure came to be. Believe it or not I wrung my brain for those lumpy shape languages...
  16. This is a compilation of all the curses and exclamations used in the Stormlight Archive. Hopefully it will illuminate the culture, magic, and history, and provide some entertainment as well. I appreciate your continued help in finding any that I have missed. This post is complete through Edgedancer. You can find a list incorporating curses from Oathbringer here. UPDATE Sep 2017: I have reworked and consolidated the organization. In most cases, I have removed the speaker attributions for the sake of clarity, as I felt that the speaker’s identity was superfluous. The speaker is noted in some instances to help identify the cultural context. If you think a particular phrase should be attributed (or not), please make your case in a comment. I believe the list is now exhaustive for WoK, WoR, and Edgedancer. Storms and Storming are universal, and people use them frequently. So far we haven’t had many scenes from people on the western half of the continent where the storms are weaker; there is a good chance that the storms are invoked far less in such regions. Notably, Taffa uses a storm-related curse in Dalinar’s Starfalls vision, indicating that it was used historically as well. Variants and related curses: "Stormwinds" (Lirin, Taffa), "Storms alight" (Jasnah), "Blustering" (Yalb), The Heralds, collectively and as individuals, are invoked across many Rosharan cultures. Vorin speakers most frequently swear by Kelek, but by the end of WoR Vorin speakers have invoked each of the ten Heralds at least once. As they occur in curses, the Vorin forms are: Jezerezeh, Nalan, Chana, Vedeledev, Pailiah/Pali, Ash, Battah, Kelek, Talat, Ishi [Herald] knows or [Herald] send are frequent formulations. ”Chana help” is a similar construction [Herald’s] [attribute] A herald is often paired with a body part or attribute. Some appear to be traditional associations, but others are most likely spontaneous variations. Examples Kelek's breath Kelek's tongue Ash's eyes Ishar's soul Nalan's hand Pali's mind—(Adrotagia) by Vedeledev's golden keys—(Kabsal) Talat's hand Other Variants: “Living Heralds above” Heralds send” "What in Kelek's name”—(Talik) notable because Rysn is amused at the usage of a Vorin curse by a Reshi trader Azish speakers use alternate names for the heralds, primarily invoking Yaezir (Jezrien) Variants: "for Yaezir's sake," "Yaezir help" Kadasixes and Stars--used by an Azish vizier. Kadasix is their word for Herald, but the association with stars is interesting, especially considering cosmological features like Taln's scar and the gas giants shown in the star chart in Arcanum Unbounded. Tashikki speakers frequently invoke Tashi, probably the Herald Taln, though other possibilities have been proposed (see this thread). Variants: "Tashi above," "Tashi, God of Gods and Binder of the World" Other Vorin Curses Almighty is a frequent Vorin curse, referencing Honor/Tanavast. Many variants of usage are found: "Almighty above" "by the Almighty's tenth name" "what in the Almighty's own eyes?" "by the names of God himself" "Almighty, cast from heaven to dwell in our hearts" Stormfather is a ubiquitous Vorin curse. NOTE: While the general usage is distinct, we should remember that Vorinism has conflated the Stormfather with Jezerezeh/Jezrien. We see explicit instances of this conflation from Kaladin, Moash, and Sigzil in WoK. Damnation is especially common among Vorin speakers. Zahel (a worldhopper living in Vorin society) has also used this curse. Variants and related phrases “What in Damnation's eleventh name?"—(Sebarial) “What in the Halls”—(Van Jushu) a reference to the Tranquiline Halls Other Cultures Passions--Thaylen Flick my sparks –(Lopen) Herdazian exclamation, a reference to sparkflickers. Blight it all – (Axies) presumably Siah/Aimian Dustmother—(Ton, a Bavlander in a Szeth interlude of WoK). Possibly Vorin? Glories within—(Szeth) presumably Shin Kali’kalin’s ghost –(Rock) Unkalaki, possibly referencing a Herald? Starlight-(Geranid) Speaker is a Vorin ardent with extended residence in the Reshi isles Spren So far, the only instances we have are from Wyndle: “Sweet virtue” and “Oh blessed mother” Unique or Uncategorized Drynets—a sailor curse implied to be quite inappropriate. Starving--unique curse used by food-obsessed Lift. Storming Mother of the World and Father of Storms Above. (Lift) Originally Reshi, Lift has travelled widely, so it is difficult to assign a parent culture. By the Brightcaller's Rays -- used by Drehy, so presumably a phrase from far western Roshar (presumably Rira) Past Eras, as seen in Dalinar’s visions Three Gods--(Taffa) Sweet wisdom of Battar--(Taffa) Worldhoppers Shadows—(Nazh) Threnody
  17. Which dahn are Lirin, Hesina and Oroden now? They are not lighteyed. Yet Oroden is theoretically Kaladin's heir. First dahn? EDIT: First nahn
  18. I finished rereading Warbreaker last week, and it struck me this evening: named Shardblades have very Returned-style names. Maybe it's just a coincidence--maybe you can't read too much into it; after all, Brandon has confirmed that there has been hundreds if not thousands of years of cultural trade between Roshar and Nalthis; this could just be cultural happenstance in the same way that shash is a shared linguistic trait between the two worlds. But here are some names of the Returned: Lightsong, Blushweaver, Allmother, Peacegiver, Strifelover, and of course, Warbreaker. Here are some names of (named) Shardblades: Firestorm, Sunraiser, Oathbringer. I don't count Mayalaran because that's her spren name, in the same way that Sylphrena is the name of Kaladin's spren; not sure what to make of spren names. But really--where do Shardblade names come from? They seem to have a similar naming tradition as the Returned: two-part words, often involving a verb. Sunraiser and Oathbringer both fit that bill. Is there a connection? Or is it happenstance?
  19. Koloss

    Crispmelon?

From the album: Natural History of Roshar

This is actually from a while ago when I was planning to concept some fruits of Roshar, but one thing after another, and this just fizzled out. Seeing how I won't be going back to it anymore, I want to put this potential Rosharan plants idea out there - hiding underground to avoid high storms, and emerging only when mature... like peanuts! :D
  20. Pines

    Gaz!

Requested by a user over at r/cosmere, couldn't resist trying my hand at this guy! (Thanks u/green_office_stapler for the outfit inspiration!)
  21. So my shower thoughts this morning ended up on Roshar, specifically the grains on Roshar. Forgive me if this is something that's already been discussed, but I had some interesting (to me, at least) thoughts about what we've been told. Now the good news is that there are no huge issues here. There are a couple things that don't add up to me, but there are ways for Brandon to resolve all these - it was just interesting to think about and wonder if he considered this when world building. I mentioned this to my wife, and she thought you all might appreciate this. So here goes: To start, we're told that lavis corresponds roughly to Earth corn, and tallew to Earth rice. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/409/#e13805 Unfortunately I couldn't find a wob for tallew, but here's the coppermind article that mentions it being similar to rice: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Tallew#cite_note-The_Way_of_Kings-37-chapter-1 Now the first problem we run into is that neither corn nor rice contain gluten. For the most part, Brandon has stuck to foods that don't require gluten. He mentions boiling tallew, using lavis for flatbreads (think tortillas), etc. And this mostly works, except for nixtamalization. If you're not familiar with it, nixtamalization is the process where corn is cooked in lime (the mineral, not the fruit) to change it into something that you can actually use for flatbreads. Ground corn on its own (cornmeal) doesn't hold together very well. In order to use a corn-like grain on the scale we're talking about in Roshar, and for things like chouta, you're going to need to nixtamalize it. For a bit I thought that the lime would be an issue, but then I figured that they mine enough stone on Roshar that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume they've mined limestone and figured out how to extract the lime. (Of course, that assumes that limestone, a sedimentary rock formed in ancient seabeds, would be present on the Roshar continent, even though we've been led to assume that this continent was created more or less as it currently exists, without ever having been on the sea floor. But I'm making some assumptions there, and I'm not a geologist, so I'm going to ignore that.) Alternately, since rockbud shells burn, and I believe there's soap on Roshar, I'm going to assume that they have access to rockbud-ash lye, and they could also use this for the nixtamalization process. I don't think they would use wood-ash. Wood is too valuable. Once they've got the nixtamalized corn, then they need to grind it. And this is a wet grind, producing an already-hydrated dough, perfect for flatbreads. Not super portable, though, so there would need to be mills in the warcamps (and everywhere else too, obviously. Just maybe should be more noticeable in the warcamps), as well as areas where the grain was nixtamalized (assuming you can't soulcast pre-nixtamalized pre-ground lavis. I honestly have no idea if this is possible.) So that's quite a bit of text to say that yes, flatbreads are possible with Rosharan resources, but they require a few processes that we haven't seen on-screen and that tbh Brandon may not have considered. So on to the issue that I referenced before - gluten. Now, I'm just going to get this out of the way and admit that Brandon can fix this by saying "actually, tallew contains gluten" or "every gluten-containing bread you've seen onscreen is made with wheat exported from Shinovar" or some such. But for our purposes, given that pancakes were everywhere in Yeddaw, I'm going to assume that they're making them with lavis or tallew. If that's the case, I don't have any good explanations for this. Given that these are not described as flatbreads, I initially thought it was safe to assume that they're fluffy. Which would mean some sort of gluten structure. Or additives. It's possible that they're using xanthan gum or the like, though this seems like a stretch to me. Still, it seems like the likely solution to this is either "tallew contains gluten" or "they're using whatever that Thaylen buckwheat stuff is, or another grain I haven't told you about, since they're out West." (Or, see below, another solution could be "these aren't pancakes, they're just flatbread.") Last one, then. How are they getting these pancakes to rise? Now, this one is a little less of an issue, since he's actually addressed it: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/394/#e12998 This leads me to believe that either he forgot about the pancakes when he gave this wob, and they're doing yeasted pancakes (which sounds weird to me, but could work. idk, I've never tried) or more likely they're really just another form of flatbread, and they're not fluffy. Which ruins my image of Lift running around the city stealing piping hot fluffy bread disks a little, but I can live with it. (I will note that it's highly unlikely that these are the quickbread pancakes we're familiar with, which use bicarbonate of soda, which in our world wasn't used in cooking until the mid to late 19th century. Given differences in progression of technology, it's possible they would have this, but I would be surprised if it was an ingredient commonly available to the masses.) So there you have it. Nothing earth shattering, (or plains shattering? eh? eh?) but just my morning muses. I don't think anything's "broken" here, per se. Brandon has addressed the gluten and rising bits mostly satisfactorily, but I think there's still a bit missing around the nixtamalization. And just to reiterate, all of this could be easily solved by Brandon just saying "oh, yeah, things are different on Roshar." Anyways, I think it's just a fun little corner of the world building that hasn't been completely fleshed out, and would require a couple logical jumps to get working.
  22. Late last night whilst rereading Oathbringer, I happened to stumble upon this (context: Kaladin is flying everyone to Kholinar): Page 601 US Hardback edition of Oathbringer (bold added)^^ Which of course reminded me of this: Page 482 of the US hardcover edition of Arcanum Unbounded (bold added). Thoughts? WoBs? Tell me what you guys think! It may just be a throwaway line, or it could be evidence a hint that the Ones Above are from Roshar.
