  1. So, I noticed one of the members of Ghostbloods wore a mask, and when questioned about it by Shallan, she stated she wondered why people here (either meaning Alethkar or Roshar) went about so brazenly without masks. In the newest Mistborn book, we are introduced to a civilization that always wears masks, and said something similar about the people of Elendel not wearing masks. Also, this is my first post, so hi!
  2. I think I've discovered a potentially new Worldhopper on Roshar that has never been hypothesized before: Drehy. And I think he's a Terrisman! (Yes, somebody once before theorized that Sigzil was a Terrisman Worldhopper, but we know from WoB that's not possible.) There are plenty of quotes throughout both Way of Kings and Words of Radiance that describe his appearance as tall, long-limbed, and lanky. He even has a faint accent. But first, let me provide book citations for what a Terrisman looks like, anything bolded is done for emphasis: Alendi on Rashek's appearance in his journal: I know what you're thinking, height isn't enough to say Drehy is Terris, because not every tall person is going to be Terris. But would every tall person also be described as lanky and long-limbed too? Probably not. So lets find descriptions of Terrismen that show them as lanky and long-limbed. Vin on Sazed when he taps pewter, The Final Empire, Chapter 37: Sazed's own description of his self when he's digging a grave, The Well of Ascension, Chapter 4: Sazed is tall, lanky, and long-limbed. He also has a shaved head. All of these characteristics are used to describe Drehy at one point or another in Way of Kings or Words of Radiance: Way of Kings, Chapter 49: "To Care" First, I'm not sure if Terrisman can be blonde and second we do not know what his skin color is. However, many western Rosharians do have darker complexions such as the Emulis, Makabaki, and Azish. Additionally, he has an accent, and I'd assume that many off-worlders would have an accent...unless they have an ear for language, which, for example, Demoux does not but Blunt/Baon does. Anyway, let's look at more descriptions of Drehy from other character's perspectives: Kaladin observing the Bridge Four members as Rock shaves them, Words of Radiance, Chapter 2: "Bridge Four" Usually, when we see his hair mentioned it is blond and balding, but here we see Rock shaving his head. Not his chin. His head. The members of Bridge Four seem to regularly shave themselves to feel like their old selves. Or in Drehy's case, his Terris-self. This interpretation is obviously a stretch, but he is getting his head shaved here. Adolin observing Drehy after being told about additional scratched glyphs after a Highstorm, Words of Radiance, Chapter 50: "Uncut Gems" While we don't get his name directly in this scene, it's obviously Drehy, because nobody else has such a description on Bridge Four. Shallan interacting with Drehy as they approach the central plateau of Stormseat, Words of Radiance, Chapter 80: "To Fight The Rain" Again, we don't get his name, but this has to be Drehy. No other member of Bridge Four has this description, and we know that on the march out to the Parshendi plateau that Drehy is guarding Adolin. So I assume Adolin sent him in this scene to get Shallan. Okay, given all of the evidence from the books, I think it's highly likely that Drehy is a Terrisman Worldhopper. What do you all think?
  3. So we know that Kandra are basically blobs of tissue that conform to a set of bones. My question is, would a Kandra be able to mimic creatures on Roshar? Most if not all creatures on Roshar have exo-skeletons like shells or carapace. Forgetting about the obvious humans and maybe Parshendi, would the Kandra be able to use a creature with an exo-skeleton instead of internal bones?
  4. I was originally planning on adding a chull, but it looked horrible so I'm uploading this instead. The chull, when I make it, will probably be on a Jah Keved road or something.
  5. I've seen someone infer that the Parshendi rhythms come from Shadesmar. Do we know if there is a WoB to that effect? In addition, I'm wondering how much we as a community know about the internal physiology of a Parshendi. I feel like I read about some Alethi [secretly] dissecting fallen Parshendi, but it might have been just a "why don't they..." thought that I had while reading the books. I'm curious about their hearts, specifically. Do they have four-chambered hearts that beat in a similar way (one-two-break, one-two-break) to human hearts? I guess I'm curious specifically whether there is a physical realm aspect to their rhythm, or it is a purely cognitive thing they latch on to? I wonder what it would take for a non-parshendi other than their god to "hack" into their rhythms, bending them to their own purpose. Could this be where Parshmen came from? And if so, what other things could those same hacks be used to accomplish? I'm also very curious what the actual base rhythm they base all of their more complex rhythms around actually sounds like. Do we know if there is a WoB defining the actual rhythm itself, at all?
  6. My friend and I sat down one day, looked at themap of Roshar and thought "What the heck?". We decided to try and figure it out with our limited knowledge of geology and hopefully ask Sanderson about it later. Here it is. (ignore the arrows. They were supposed to indicate movement of plates into other plates) Fist I asked Isaac Stewart (The guy who made the map). He said he considers plate tectonics when he makes maps, but he wasn't entirely sure about this one. He also said he probably couldn't say and I should ask Brandon. So I asked Sanderson behind the scenes. He said he could see how the plate tectonics could work. Then paused. "Roshar was made very specifically by not necessarily natural means it looks the way it does for a certain reason. so no, there are not plate tectonics on Roshar." This was like six months ago and it was late, so the exact words are probably off. I do know for a fact he said there are not plate tectonics on Roshar. and I'm 97.7% I got his words about right on Roshar not being created naturally, I for sure got the meaning.
  7. I'm in need of an idea, and I hope that you can help.W What/where do you vote that I should paint next? I'm thinking of gathering the options presented in this topic/the gallery's comments and drawing out of a hat, or making a spin wheel or something like that. Then it's off to the races. I'll keep you's posted. And without further ado--my interpretation of Kharbranth: (click to go to the gallery and click again to zoom, i guess..) Now the story: This painting was DANG FUN to create. I've been out painting landscapes for a class all fall long and practicing up my skills (because my past environment paintings have been suck...) This piece was the final assignment for the class and it evolved over the course of like, a month and a half. I worked really closely with my teacher (one of the artists who worked on Rio, the Ice Age sequels, the Peanuts Movie, etc.) and got some great feedback to make this all possible, so BIG thanks to him. Please note: Sky eels. The earlier iterations had sea gulls, then I realized: Roshar. No birds. huh. Also note: Teravangian's palace and much of the city is obscured by a creepy, foggy sort of shadow. Foreshadowing.. Ba dum Chish! ;-) And lastly: Please, seriously, cast your votes on the next Rosharan location that you'd like to see. Ideally, something that has adequate description in the books. I'd love some community involvement in the next piece, ya know? =) C Cheers!
  8. Here's something that jumped out at me right away - the SoScad group called Hunters. Each child is given a mask, and then given another when they become an adult. Allik claims that the Hunters somehow grow into their masks. This immediately makes me think of Iyatil from the Ghostbloods. She is described as short, something the SoScads all seem to have in common (Shallan actually thinks she is a young boy when she first meets her, iirc) and she has a red-and-orange carapace mask that appears to have skin growing around it.
  9. Does anyone have a map of Roshar which has Hearthstone labelled , has important landforms (such as mountains) and obviously is accurate? The ones in the books don't have Hearthstone in it. Thanks.
  10. So I was browsing the Coppermind when I came across the page for Trelagism, the religion of the worshippers of Trell. Some background: Trelagists believed that there were two gods, Trell and his healous brother Nalt. They thought that the night was sacred, as they could see the thousand eyes of Trell, the stars. They believed that in the day, Nalt shined his single eye (the sun) on the world, blocking the trelagists from seeing Trell's eyes, as he was jealous of their worship. Now, this strikes me as very similar to the religion described by Ishikk in the Stormlight Archive. They worship Nu Ralik, but they pretend to worship Vun Makak, his jealous brother, the source of all of their misfortunes, to appease him. I think that this is intentional, and that we will see something about this in some of the later Cross-Cosmere books. Thoughts? TL:DR - Religious conspiracy. Purelakian religion is very similar to one of the Scadrian Religions. Expect to see explanation later in the cosmere.
  11. I was originally going to post this post: So, in the past, Brandon has stated that he wants each of his series to be able to stand alone, so that someone who hasn't read all of his other books, and isn't aware of the cosmere can still enjoy them. At least until the space mistborn that is. My question is: how do you guys think he's going to be able to do that with Vasher and Nightblood now on Roshar? So far, there hasn't been much in the Stormlight Archive that hints at other planets. How would he be able to write it so that the explanation of who those two are is satisfying? As I was thinking about this though, I came up with a crazy aluminum foil theory. What if Nalthis is the Tranquiline Halls? It would be such an easy explanation. When asked, they'd just say, 'I'm from the Tranquiline Halls." Vasher is very old, maybe he was alive when humans migrated to Roshar. Maybe he was the one who figured out how to do it. There is a WoB out there that says he world hopped when he was younger. Or, instead of Vasher leading people to Roshar, maybe humans were a 'house warming gift' from Endowment to Honor and Cultivation when they arrived on Roshar. Endowment is all about giving gifts. Either way, it would explain why Vasher would have known to go to Roshar, and why stormlight can fuel being a Returned. The Rosharians are descendants of the people of Nalthis. Their SDNA is still close enough that the magics work supper well together. Brandon has said that Nalthis and Roshar have more conection than we think, maybe this is it? Anyway, just some crazy ideas I had. Let me know what you guys think.
  12. So, this is silly, but I can't help but wonder... In Vorin cultures, is the safehand always the left hand, or can it be just the off-hand? I think I recall a brief WoB about it simply being the left hand, but then what's a Vorin leftie to do? I wonder if the Vorin culture has any superstitions about left-handed people. ...Thoughts?
  13. Ok, Friends. Help me out here. For I have gone and convinced myself of something crazy! Sorry, I'm new to the forum and I don't know how to do that cool "spoiler" button yet. Please be aware that this theory mainly concerns The Stormlight Archive: Way of Kings and will have spoilers for the stormlight series. But because of said theory, this post will also contain spoilers from the Alloy of Law. So please continue reading at your own risk! If you have read both books, please give your thoughts on this theory. Many thanks! Toward the end of Interlude-6 when Szeth finds Gavashaw dead along with his [former] master Makkek, he's greeted by this dark figure who bears Szeth's Oathstone and gives him Taravangian's kill list. I'd like to discuss who this dark figure might be... Because I don't believe he's just some unimportant messenger. Szeth doesn't recognize this man's accent. This seems to be a gentle suggestion that the figure might originate off world. I figure Szeth would have traveled many places since becoming Truthless and having his Oathstone traded so frequently. Szeth guesses that the dark figure's accent might be Alethi, but he isn't sure. No real description of the dark figure is really given except that his voice is "male and deep" so a physical match can't really be made. The figure even wore a mask. So all we can really go on and take clues from is the shrouded man's words. Monologuing - This shrouded figure is heavily opinionated for someone who is presumably unimportant and needs to only deliver proof of the Oathstone exchanging hands and the new orders from the new master. That being said, what the man starts monologuing about is, i feel, key to discovering his true identity. He says things like: "Are you satisfied with this... are you satisfied with trivial crimes?" "What a waste... You are squandered." "You are a work of art... a god." “But do you not rebel against this frivolous use of your skills? Were you not meant for greatness?” "It's time you stop wasting your talent." Very interesting statements. He had virtually no reason to monologue to Szeth... and combining that with his strange accent, I keep feeling like this shrouded figure is more important that the interlude makes apparent. He shows up nowhere else in the series (as of yet) to pick apart more clues. These statements come dangerously close to many things said to Waxillium Ladrian back on Scadrial. My vote is that the masked and shadowed man giving Szeth his new orders is Miles "Hundredlives" Dagouter who is now on Roshar. As implausible as it seems, he may not actually be truly dead. It was never explained how he was still able to heal after all of his metalminds were apparently removed. Therefore we don't know to what extent his death was an act or irreversible (including his missing pulse). We know nothing of the remains/body of Mile Dagouter. Beyond that, the cosmere has "Returned" and fabrials that can revive people from the unthinkable (like with a certain someone at the end of WoR). Miles Dagouter is my best guess as to who this man might be... he doesn't actually have to have survived his experienced on Scadrial to be alive on Roshar right now. He's Miles Hundredlives Dagouter... he's been through a lot worse. He probably had gold implanted in his bones. He was very confident when he went up for execution. Why would he have been so confident if he knew he'd eventually run out of gold during the execution and die anyway? As for what he'd be doing on Roshar? Probably doing the same thing he was doing on Scadial. Serving someone, believing in a higher cause. Like Taravangian. Thoughts?
  14. Brandon Sanderson has made it known that there is an Easter egg in the map of Roshar. For context sake, here is the map of Roshar. I apologize for any quality issues. Anyway, I have a theory on what the Easter egg is. On March 20, 2014, this happened: Then, just nine days later, this exchange was recorded: (bolding added by me)My theory is that Roshar is a map for the Cosmere. In another WoB, he confirms that all the action in the Cosmere is in a compact dwarf Galaxy. I'd be more than willing to show it, but my tablet is having issues selecting that WoB. If anybody has come up with similar theories or has a WoB that disproves my theory, that will of course be taken into consideration, but I am fairly confident that my theory is correct, and I'm hopeful that I am the first to voice this opinion.
  15. Returned that feed of Stormlight I put together this theory about "How could a Returned lives on Roshar for long (maybe infinite) time without Breath supply". First of all begin with "well know facts": - The Returned was dead people resurrected through the Divine Breath. - The Divine Breath is a Splinter of Endowment - A Returned must feed of One-Breath-amount of Investiture every week, or dies. - The Sprens are Shard's Splinters (like Seon). - On Roshar a Bond could grant additional powers. - The Seon-Bond are confirmed to give new powers on Roshar. - There are a Returned on Roshar who could be possible not use Breath to stay alive. Now I would add some of my "thesis" (this are contestable) : - The Returned are Bond with their Divine Breath. - The Roshar's Manifestation of Investiture had two effects: 1) Granted Ability based on the Bond's nature (example: a Seon-Bond doesn't grant the "surges"). 2) Granted the Ability to access to Roshar's Investiture (Stormlight) to use the point 1 Abilities. I have finished this long prologue and began to explain what my theory is: The Returned are Bond to their Divine Breath and on Roshar their Bond granted them addictional Powers. Regardless what this "powers" are, they are granted to the absorption of Stormlight to fuel them. This Stormlight could be used by the Returned to remain alive. A Returned could "suppress" his own Divine Breath every day and "unsuppress" it only when He would/must feed of Stormlight, this could me made directly from ad Highstorm (Dangerous) or quite easy from a Infused Sphere hidden from the Other's sight. If this is true, Roshar is the perfect Returned's Habitat. It offer an abundant Free Investiture (like other Shardworld) and a easy way to use its (otherwise from other Shardworld) to someone with a Bond. I really appreciate your opinion about this theory of mine
  16. So in Words of Radiance (can't give the direct quote or page number since I am moving and my copy is in a taped-up box), Sadeas says that he likes his wife Ialai's name because unlike most Rosharan names, which are palindromes except one letter off, her name is a perfect palindrome and therefore a bit arrogant. Similarly, Kabsal compliments Shallan on her name in Way of Kings because it's one sound off from a palindrome. So why does Laral, Kaladin's childhood friend/almost-fiancee/it's complicated, have a perfect palindrome name? Or, for that matter, Rillir, Brightlord Roshone's ill-fated son who died of idiocy when he tried to kill a whitespine? Any ideas on the inconsistency? Perhaps giving your (light-eyed) kid a perfect palindrome name was less of a taboo in the countryside, but Rillir came from the capital city, where it would have been heavily frowned upon.
  17. Now of course, the only time that Roshar is explicitly mentioned is in the Ars Arcanum, but I think that the broadsheet has given us a pretty good clue that Rosharians have visited Scadrial. Specifically, that "VISITORS from other WORLDS" illustration looks pretty clearly like a Parshendi to me. Furthermore, the description of the encounter seemed to very explicitly describe a Shardpool (similar to the one seen in Elantris or in the Horneater peaks). Both of Scadrial's Shardpools are accounted for in this book (Wax and TenSoon pass through the Pits of Hathsin and walk right past the Well of Ascension), so it seems pretty likely to me that this new metal is due to a new Shard setting up shop, probably with some intention of deHarmonizing the good folk of Scadrial.
  18. I have made yet another Stormlight Archive-themed origami model, and here it is. This one is made of one square piece of paper. It's based off of the Oathbringer necklace on the Brandon Sanderson Store. Hope you like it!
  19. Have we found the easter egg which is supposedly encoded into the map of Roshar? I ask because at first glance it seems like the mirroring of Roshar and Shadesmar, but that's explicitly noticed in the text, and seems like an inviolate rule of how Shadesmar works. It bears a slight resemblance to the world of Monty Oum's RWBY, whose map was developed with some sprayed condiments on a airplane napkin, but that seems unlikely. Anyone else possibly figure it out?
  20. Started playing around with some ideas on a basic look and feel for the shattered plains today, and I kinda like 'em =) big changes from what I created in my last Kaladin fanart piece. Let me know what you think!
  21. As the third in my series of my Roshar origami, I've finally done one with actual origami paper instead of printer paper. Once again, Mistborn is my platform. I hope you like it!
  22. I often speculate about the configuration of the “Dawn Cities” – a series of geometric shapes. They remind me of the crop circles we find on earth. That and the description of the black “fortress” in the Purelake during Dalinar’s vision – “finlike sides rising towards peaked tips above, towers like arrowheads…” (WoR, Kindle p. 73) – make me think of space ships. I’m not pushing this (yet); but it’s always made me wonder…Has anyone else had similar thoughts? (And the black "obsidian" of the Purelake "fortress" could easily be black metal. Dalinar wouldn't be able to tell the difference, never having seen a large structure made from metal, especially from distance.)
  23. Who knew that Roshar is actually Pluto? New pictures of the surface of Pluto show what appears to be the Shattered Plains. The round war camps are even there, granted they're not all next to each other and we're missing a few. Maybe we're all wrong and Reckoners IS Cosmere because Roshar is in our solar system? Source: NASA Edit: Mestiv actually came to the same conclusion hours before me in the Random Stuff II thread.
  24. In keeping with the theme of the origami whitespine, I decided to take a shot at making an axehound. This one uses the same base as the whitespine, but only uses one square of paper. I will eventually make one in actual origami paper, but for now it'll be in printer paper. As always, if you want to see how it's made, or make your own, I can make a diagram for it. Hope you like it!
  25. Since I like both fantasy books and origami, I have made quite a few fantasy book-based origami models over the years. In any case, I decided to take a shot at a Whitespine. This is it. it uses four squares of paper: One for the body, tail, and limbs, one for the head, and two for the spikes P.S. I'm using "Mistborn as a pedestal because it won't stand up on my bed and my copy of "Mistborn"'s cover doesn't curl for some reason. Also, if anyone is interested, I can post a diagram for the Whitespine.
