  1. So, just recently I realized that most cosmere systems of magic have to do with shardic intent. I know that people have probably already thought of this, but it came to me while I was reading Warbreaker. On Endowment's shardworld, magic allows people to endow items with gifts, namely, the gift of life and breath. Awakeners give items life, of course, but even common people can give their breath to the Returned. And the Returned give their breath to heal. On Scadrial, Ruin's system of magic requires the destruction of metal for power. Preservation's preserves power to be saved for later. Hemalurgy sort of preserves power by transferring it, but requires the ruin of a living being. So it's kind of a combination of the two. On Sel, stuff is different, due to both shards being shattered. I won't bother. I'm still trying to work out White Sand. I haven't read them yet. On Roshar, a Knight Radiant's power is directly linked to being honorable by following the ideals of their order. Cultivation cultivates people with her magic. She nurtures with a gift, but prunes with a curse, in an attempt to foster healthy growth. Odium is... Odium. It seems like the Fused are fuled by passion, which is Odium's thing. We really don't have much concrete information on them though, except that they're basically uncool and Unhinged versions of the Knights Radiant. That's... All I've read of the cosmere so far. Feel free to add, or correct.

The Lesser Skyeel, as well as the Greater, display sexual dimorphism in which the sexes appear different. The Lesser Skyeel female and the young are both camouflaged to maximize survival, while the male is fancy to get a date. Instead of an eel, the lesser skyeel is based on lauch fish and a bit of gold fish for derpy look. It is 26cm long, the size of a wooden soup ladle.

This here veers into some serious artistic licenses, lol! I split the official skyeel description into two - the moray look for the Greater, and the color and pattern for the Common. As I mentioned before, it started as one skyeel, but then I went berserk and made three species. The Lesser Skyeel is comparatively smaller than the other two, but still about the size of a Blue Jay. ... I probably should have included the size chart in this upload too, huh? It'll come with the Greater Skyeel batch. So whereas the Common Skyeel is the equivalent of a seagull or petrel, the Lesser Skyeel is the equivalent of a backyard bird, such as the Blue Jay or the Northern Cardinal, or sparrows. ... aw I should've designed a 'bird feeder'. Too late. As such a small species, their color and pattern need to blend in with the environment well. Without illustrating the environment, I used a collage of what I think Rosharan landscape is based on to help with this part.

This is the skyeel from Roshar, with much artistic licenses added because I was having too much fun visualizing them! It started out as just skyeel, which I decided to expanded into three species to have some more species diversity, and a more natural feeling when populating the world, like a city park would have pigeons, sparrows and starlings. Besides the Common Skyeel, there is the Greater Skyeel, and Lesser Skyeel, because I am great at naming things like that. The Common Skyeel has a difficult balance to strike – it needs to not compete in coolness with the Greater Skyeel, which is set at boss level, but also not as drab and blending-in as the Lesser Skyeel despite it being the most … well, commonly seen around by people! Like a seagull, but cooler, but not too cool. For that reason Common Skyeel remains the only design that has the same color, pattern, and size between female and male. It is also the last of the three I designed, but somehow ended up being the standard to which I adjust the other two Skyeel designs to make the Greater fittingly boss-like, and the Lesser accordingly humble. That seemingly little egg there took me a while to settle on! So I must ramble about it here. Skyeel is a fish, that flies in air, taking up the same niche as birds do on Earth. So does it still lay eggs? What shape and surface if they're exposed to the elements? How does the baby break out? Does skyeel birth live pups like some sharks do? What is the morphology - the baby looks exactly like adult but miniature (sail fish), baby looks partially like adult (birds), or a complete metamorphosis (tadpole/frog)? When everything is possible, it's impossible to just settle on one. But I had to, so I did, otherwise my life cannot go on... I had a lot of fun letting my imagination run wild with how else a common skyeels would show up in people's culture: What would skyeel be like as food? How big is a Common Skyeel anyway? Is it steak-size? What would a high-end restaurant premium cut skyeel steak look like? This skyeel bun is inspired by a braided dragon bread my girlfriend and I made recently. All it needs are a pair of wing fins, and some cookie back fins, and there’s a skyeel! Where else would a commonly known animal like the skyeel show up in people culture? Toys, of course! This is a simple wooden toy, lovingly hand-carved by a grandfather for his grand children.

  6. This is a compilation of all the curses and exclamations used in the Stormlight Archive. Hopefully it will illuminate the culture, magic, and history, and provide some entertainment as well. I appreciate your continued help in finding any that I have missed. This post is complete through Edgedancer. You can find a list incorporating curses from Oathbringer here. UPDATE Sep 2017: I have reworked and consolidated the organization. In most cases, I have removed the speaker attributions for the sake of clarity, as I felt that the speaker’s identity was superfluous. The speaker is noted in some instances to help identify the cultural context. If you think a particular phrase should be attributed (or not), please make your case in a comment. I believe the list is now exhaustive for WoK, WoR, and Edgedancer. Storms and Storming are universal, and people use them frequently. So far we haven’t had many scenes from people on the western half of the continent where the storms are weaker; there is a good chance that the storms are invoked far less in such regions. Notably, Taffa uses a storm-related curse in Dalinar’s Starfalls vision, indicating that it was used historically as well. Variants and related curses: "Stormwinds" (Lirin, Taffa), "Storms alight" (Jasnah), "Blustering" (Yalb), The Heralds, collectively and as individuals, are invoked across many Rosharan cultures. Vorin speakers most frequently swear by Kelek, but by the end of WoR Vorin speakers have invoked each of the ten Heralds at least once. As they occur in curses, the Vorin forms are: Jezerezeh, Nalan, Chana, Vedeledev, Pailiah/Pali, Ash, Battah, Kelek, Talat, Ishi [Herald] knows or [Herald] send are frequent formulations. ”Chana help” is a similar construction [Herald’s] [attribute] A herald is often paired with a body part or attribute. Some appear to be traditional associations, but others are most likely spontaneous variations. Examples Kelek's breath Kelek's tongue Ash's eyes Ishar's soul Nalan's hand Pali's mind—(Adrotagia) by Vedeledev's golden keys—(Kabsal) Talat's hand Other Variants: “Living Heralds above” Heralds send” "What in Kelek's name”—(Talik) notable because Rysn is amused at the usage of a Vorin curse by a Reshi trader Azish speakers use alternate names for the heralds, primarily invoking Yaezir (Jezrien) Variants: "for Yaezir's sake," "Yaezir help" Kadasixes and Stars--used by an Azish vizier. Kadasix is their word for Herald, but the association with stars is interesting, especially considering cosmological features like Taln's scar and the gas giants shown in the star chart in Arcanum Unbounded. Tashikki speakers frequently invoke Tashi, probably the Herald Taln, though other possibilities have been proposed (see this thread). Variants: "Tashi above," "Tashi, God of Gods and Binder of the World" Other Vorin Curses Almighty is a frequent Vorin curse, referencing Honor/Tanavast. Many variants of usage are found: "Almighty above" "by the Almighty's tenth name" "what in the Almighty's own eyes?" "by the names of God himself" "Almighty, cast from heaven to dwell in our hearts" Stormfather is a ubiquitous Vorin curse. NOTE: While the general usage is distinct, we should remember that Vorinism has conflated the Stormfather with Jezerezeh/Jezrien. We see explicit instances of this conflation from Kaladin, Moash, and Sigzil in WoK. Damnation is especially common among Vorin speakers. Zahel (a worldhopper living in Vorin society) has also used this curse. Variants and related phrases “What in Damnation's eleventh name?"—(Sebarial) “What in the Halls”—(Van Jushu) a reference to the Tranquiline Halls Other Cultures Passions--Thaylen Flick my sparks –(Lopen) Herdazian exclamation, a reference to sparkflickers. Blight it all – (Axies) presumably Siah/Aimian Dustmother—(Ton, a Bavlander in a Szeth interlude of WoK). Possibly Vorin? Glories within—(Szeth) presumably Shin Kali’kalin’s ghost –(Rock) Unkalaki, possibly referencing a Herald? Starlight-(Geranid) Speaker is a Vorin ardent with extended residence in the Reshi isles Spren So far, the only instances we have are from Wyndle: “Sweet virtue” and “Oh blessed mother” Unique or Uncategorized Drynets—a sailor curse implied to be quite inappropriate. Starving--unique curse used by food-obsessed Lift. Storming Mother of the World and Father of Storms Above. (Lift) Originally Reshi, Lift has travelled widely, so it is difficult to assign a parent culture. Past Eras, as seen in Dalinar’s visions Three Gods--(Taffa) Sweet wisdom of Battar--(Taffa) Worldhoppers Shadows—(Nazh) Threnody

I want to design more than just cool looking creatures. These skyeels are part of a world where people of all species live. They must have a long history of interaction – relationship – with people. So I start to think about how skyeels might be edible, hunted, ‘fished’, with flying baits, of course, since they aren’t fishes that swim under water.

Collection of behavior sketches of all 3 skyeel species showing what their possible interaction with people could be, or just what they might do on their own. Such as chasing down a big, juicy bug for lunch!

That is the very first design I sketched for the Common Skyeel, upper left corner! It has changed so much... The Common Skyeel’s place in the Rosharan ecosystem – as I imagine it – is akin to a seagull. It’s designed with long wings to coast long and steady in the air, and a streamline body. The fin designs need to walk a fine line between being cooler than the Lesser Skyeel, while staying clear of the Greater Skyeel’s thunder.
  10. My theory is that spren are visible in Roshar because Honor's perpendicularity (shardpool) constantly pulls shadesmar closer as it travels inside highstorms.
  11. From the album Natural History of Roshar

These are color thumbnails for the Common Skyeel. They start out overly vibrant and coral-theme, then slowly finding a sweet spot between too noisy and blending-in, looking too much like an Earth seagull, and feeling just about right.
  12. From the album Natural History of Roshar

One of the many alien looking shell creatures on Roshar. It looks like a cooked lobster.
  13. Another thing I just realized: there don't seem to be any big holidays on Roshar. Brandon Sanderson is so great at world building but I wonder if he excluded holidays on purpose? What with the desolations and all... It would be cool to see what they would celebrate, or maybe even holidays varying by country (not counting, of course, the creepy processions in Kholinar during bk. 3) What do yall think?
  14. okay, so we all remember Mraize's souvenirs from shardworlds: the vial of sand, the santhid skull, the preserved flower etc. however, the one that stood out the most (to me at least) was the branch with carvings on it
  15. From the album Stormlight Stuff

Well, I'm gonna have to thank @Chaos for this one. For he had made the KR episodes of shardcast long enough for me to have the patience to finish this. Well, anyhow, as you can see, this is Roshar. I made the mountains taller, the islands shorter, and the colors are for two reasons. One, that's the way it sort of is on the map I referenced, (the standard one) and two, I don't have enough of one color LEGO for anything else.
  16. Spoilers for The Mistborn Books and Stormlight Series will pervade this thread. So this is not a fully flushed out theory - it's actually more of an idea - but can Kandra worldhop? They're spiked, and therefore tied to Harmony, but does that mean they can't leave their planet? If they can worldhop, do you think we've seen any Kandra on Roshar and not known it? Personally, I am hopeful to see Tensoon return as Kelsier at some point. (Different theory here: unless, do you think a Kandra sacrificed themselves and let Kelsier Spike his soul to their body using his original bones in order to have a physical form again? This is the only explanation I can think of that would lead to Kelsier having his scared arms at the end of bands of mourning).
  17. Hi all! Long time podcast listener and forum lurker, new to posting. Just reading the first WoR Ryan interlude and it mentions that the Larkin has: Which reminds me of the descriptions of Dragonsteel we've seen. When describing Frost especially there were a few mentions of silver. It's not a lot to go on but combined with the fact that they look somewhat like you might expect a dragon to look it's certainly got me wondering. Apologies if it's already been theorised / disproven, I hunted around for it but couldn't see a post. Either way I'm glad to be here!
  18. So I am left handed. Would that mean that my safe hand is my right hand or would I have to learn to do things with my right? I am guessing the latter but I just want to know.
  19. Most of you are probably familiar with "The Wave" rock formation in Arizona:" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wave_(Arizona) From the first time I saw it, I thought "Urithiru!" Some photos of Petra also look like the layered rock described in the books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petra#/media/File:PetraSandStoneRock-cut_tombs.jpg I just found out about another real-world location that resembles our favorite city-above-the-clouds: it's a series of naturally-occurring marble caves in Chile. Check out pages 5 and 6 in this gallery: http://www.bbc.com/travel/gallery/20190326-south-americas-stunning-marble-cathedral The caves can only be reached via boat, and it looks like the "floors" are water, so that of course reminded me of Purelake. What locations IRL remind you of places on Roshar?

The Common Skyeel nests high up on vertical surfaces such as cliffs, walls, and underneath roofs to keep its young safe from scavengers and predators. In this sketch, the Skyeel pup looks exactly like the adult, just miniaturized, in the same ways that marlins are on Earth. I've made 2 other Skyeel metamorphosis possibilities, and demonstrated them with 2 other Skyeel designs, Greater Skyeel, Lesser Skyeel (very creative at naming things, I am :P)

  23. I thought it was obvious but I cant find a WOB to support it.
