  1. This morning, Weller Book Works will have signed and numbered copies of Rhythm of War for sale tomorrow, September 24 at 10am MDT (9am Pacific, 12pm Eastern) on its Rhythm of War page (link goes active at that time). This bookstore is Brandon's common partner for sending out signed and numbered copies for releases. They say there will only be 1200 copies available, and restricted to just one book per customer. Weller's tries to get books shipped to you so you get them on the release date of November 17th. Weller's IS doing personalizations, but that will require a donation to the charity Worldbuilders. The deadline for personalized copies will be at October 10th at noon Mountain time. People who buy Rhythm of War through here will have an access code to the virtual book launch on November 17th. This won't be the only place where you can said access code for the release party, and we'll update you when we hear of more places. Updates to Brandon's Store Brandon's store had some maintenance today, and it looks they are on a new system now. Plus, they have some new and returning items! First up is the Rhythm of War Release Party Swag Pack. It contains a nifty purple t-shirt, a silicone glow-in-the-dark bracelet, a lanyard, and a release badge. That's fine, but the add-ons are the cool part, with a Willshaper pin (different from the Kickstarter pin), a sticker pack, and a chicken scout patch. Also in the store are some last copies of the first printing of the Warbreaker leatherbound. Apparently the printer had some spares that they shipped to Dragonsteel. Neat! Lastly, there's a hardcover of Infinity Blade: Redemption which I believe is also new to the store. [Update 9/24] There are also face masks on Brandon's store! Interview with Isaac Stewart The Sandersonian Institute of Cosmere Studies, another cosmere podcast, is interviewing Dragonsteel's Art Director, Isaac Stewart, on October 5th at 7:30 Pacific. That will be on their Twitch at twitch.tv/inkeeperstable, and you can send them questions to ask Isaac at [email protected] with "Isaac" in the subject line.

  3. what is the equivalent Alethi social status for bonded spren, now obviously they are their own category but what’s their closest equivalent. A good example would be syl. So as of the start of rhythm of war kaladin is a high Marshall, leader of the wind runners and the founder/head of house stormblessed(best name ever). kaladin is presumably close in social standing to a weak high prince or really strong bright lord so sebarial or a amaram. However currently his house presumably consists of nobody besides himself and therefore no heir. I think it’s probable that bonded spren are socially the equivalent of spouses or siblings, obviously they aren’t Spouses or siblings and I don’t support that ship but that seems to be the most comparable social position. In the latest rhythm of war chapter we see syl helping facilitate kaladin leading not just the soldiers but the honorspren too. This comparison is not the best for some of the spren bonds like Pattern and shallan but kaladin and syl have a much more mutually respectful, close and supportive relationship then all the spren bonds we have seen. which leads me to another question if syl is the social equivalent of kaladins wife or I suppose sister does that mean her title is technically brightness stormblessed, I believe we have seen people refer to syl as brightness before, and also that is just an awesome name. butt the more important question for syl specifically, as we can see with sadeas and Ialai, she a high prince dies with no heir his wife retains her Power. So if syl is the Social equivalent of kaladins spouse or even sister, so far this is the only relevant case of this situation does that mean if kaladin dies with no heir house stormblessed reverts to her and potentially even whoever she bonded next would be the new head of the house if she chose?
  4. Is anyone else getting major ‘Empire Strikes Back’ vibes from what we’ve seen so far? I know Sanderson has only released a few chapters, but every word I read of this book seems to carry a certain malaise about it. To make matters worse, all three of the previous books ended on some kind of a high note- and if we want some kind of suspense for the final book in the arc, then Rhythm of War is almost certainly going to have some form of downer ending. So, for those of you who are pessimistically inclined and have similar feelings, my question is: what do you think is going to go wrong? Who dies, what happens, how do you reckon it ends? And to our more optimistic Sharders- are we being TOO negative? I’m interested in hearing what y’all think.

  6. Theory on the Sibling: The Sibling was the “Godspren” who managed Urithiru, and was capable of a Nahel Bond to a Bondsmith. I believe that the Sibling is inside the gemstone column in the Urithiru gemstone archive. Allow me to explain why. So, we know that a very powerful spren can be captured in a sizable perfect gemstone. Such a gemstone could potentially be used to create a Fabrial. Both Shallan and Renarin have claimed that Urithiru is not a collection of Fabrials; rather, it is a single Fabrial. This brings us to the gemstone column in Urithiru. None of the gemstones on the column look like they would be able to hold a spren as powerful as the Sibling. However, all we see is the outside of the column. On the inside, I believe there is a massive gemstone, possibly an emerald or ruby, that contains the Sibling. The gemstones on the outside of the column are likely tied together with metals to the interior main gemstone where the Sibling resides. These exterior gems hold spren are probably used by the Sibling to regulate the tower’s functions somehow. Whomever the Sibling is bonded to can request the Sibling to do something, such as increase crop production. The Sibling then activates the specific set of Fabrials in the column that controls such a function. There may be a failsafe if the Bondsmith bonded with the Sibling dies, although the Sibling could probably run the tower on its own. In addition, Renarin claims that the column is a Fabrial that is used to “be a city.” This adds to the possibility that the Sibling is inside the column, as many of the speakers in the gemstone recordings associate the Sibling with the tower itself. One of the principles of Fabrial technology we have learned from the epigraphs is that a spren cannot inhabit a gemstone with Stormlight infusing it. It stands to reason that the reverse is true; Stormlight cannot infuse a gemstone with a spren inside of it. Dalinar cannot infuse the column is because the Sibling is inside, as well as the other spren inside the gemstones making up the column. Syl mentions that Urithiru once glowed with a strange kind of light in her interlude. This could be the kind of gaseous Investiture associated with Cultivation (growthlight?), or it could be spren inside Fabrials, which sometimes glow with abnormal colors according to Navani’s prologue. Navani mentioned in Oathbringer that Urithiru has a “heart of emerald (pulp) and ruby(fire), with veins of garnet (blood).” When the Sibling is awake, perhaps these veins glow with Stormlight, Cultivationlight/Growthlight, or another color altogether. Another possibility is that, instead of the Sibling being inside a perfect gemstone, the Sibling was wounded somehow. To repair it, the splinters of its power were gathered and placed inside smaller gemstones and weave together with a lattice of metal. So then, what happened? Before the Recreance, the Sibling withdrew. Many of the tower’s functions stopped working, prompting the abandonment of Urithiru. What I believe happened was that, a bit of time before the Recreance, the Bondsmith bonded to the Sibling broke his/her Oaths. The Sibling was too powerful to be turned into a deadeye, but was sent into a coma-like state. This “slumber” is why the tower stopped working, and hasn’t for the last 2,000 years. This aligns with what the Stormfather said when Dalinar asked about the Sibling: “you have hurt them enough!” You (a Bondsmith) have hurt (broken Oaths) them (the Sibling). None of the Gemstone recordings mention a Bondsmith breaking their Oaths, as it would be a huge blow to morale. Where are we now? It has been 2,000 years since the Sibling began it’s slumber. Awakening the Sibling will be a difficult task, requiring more than just zinc wires. I believe that it will require a person with a personality similar to what kind of people Bonded with the Sibling in the first place. Such a Bond will be necessary for the Rosharans to survive the True Desolation. What does everyone think of my theory?
  7. Rhythm of Previews, our readthrough of the Rhythm of War preview chapters, continues with chapter 7! So here's that too:
  8. As I saw a lot of different ideas being thrown around concerning Jasnah interviewing Ash, I thought we should open up a seperate thread for it. So here are my initial thoughts: I think it's very cool that Jasnah actually spoke to Ash (and possibly Taln, depending on his mental state) to gain information about the previous Desolations and the enemy. There surely are some interesting bits of information to be uncovered. However, I think it is noteworthy that Kaladin does not know about the (presumed) Transportation-Fused. He infers the Fuseds surge based on his observations, not on anything he's been told by Jasnah or Ash. Furthermore, he speaks about Dalinar claiming that there are only nine types of Fused- not knowing - but wouldn't something like this be basic information for the Heralds to share? The easiest answer might simply be that Kaladin doesn't know about everything Ash has shared, but that seems unlikely (with him being a high-ranking Radiant and trusted ally to Dalinar). What might be the case is that, after Jezriens death, Ash is know zoning in and out of awareness, similar to Taln. I'm very interested to read your speculations on this topic and everything else concerning the Heralds!
  9. If this has been suggested elsewhere, I'd love for someone to direct me to the post. In reading this short scene about Lift in RoW, I came across this quote from her - the wish she gave Cultivation: “I said when everything else is going wrong, I want to be the same. I want to stay me, not become someone else.” I've been wondering if one of Odium's goals is to somehow end or stop Highstorms, so that it becomes much harder (or impossible outside of Dalinar's abilities) to get investiture on Roshar. If that happens, "everything will be going wrong" and yet Lift won't change; she will still be able to use investiture. What do you all think? Any other clues that support or discredit this idea?
  10. Today we're beginning a new series: Rhythm of Previews, where Danielle and Marvin discuss the preview chapters of Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive book. We're hoping to keep these a bit shorter than Shardcast, so we won't talk in incredible detail on everything, but we'll do our best to give you the highlights! Tor.com released the prologue and chapter 1 on Thursday, and then chapters 2 and 3 Tuesday, so this is a double-lengthed episode. We're going to do this weekly (assuming scheduling works out), so our next episode will half the length since there will just be one or two chapters next week. We're going in order, so we aren't discussing the chapter from the newsletter or Brandon's SDCC reading. You can find all of the preview chapters, and our discussions on 17S, in our Rhythm of War preview chapter index: Want a recap of Stormlight Archive? 12. Update 7/13: Tonight Brandon put out Stormlight 4 Update #9 which says much of what we say here, elaborating that Isaac and Peter have "months" of work left to do on the book. He also said the Stormlight novella's title will be announced tomorrow, and there's a livestream Thursday. He reiterated plans we've reported here: Songs of the Dead revision this week, then after, Skyward 3, and Lost Metal starting January 1. After that, then it's Stormlight 5 time, which will be roughly the halfway point of the cosmere. Last night, Brandon finished his work on Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive novel. On a screenshot saying "The End," you can see the word count is 459,629 words, which is a bit longer than Oathbringer's 454,000 words. Brandon shared in a Facebook comment that there are 112 chapters, plus interludes, and the prologue and epilogue. Brandon also said in his post that though the book releases in full on November (specifically, November 17th), preview chapters are coming before then. His tweet says "preview chapters soon." Hooray! Now, in previous news posts, some commenters have asked why they can't just read the ebook of this next week, so I thought I'd explain some things to the best of my ability as to what is happening next for the book. Please, anyone in the comments who know more than I do, comment away, I'd love to know more! Though Brandon is done, there's a lot more work to be done from people on Brandon's team as well as Tor. First up will be typesetting the Word document to look like an actual book. Then there's proofreading that needs to be done. There are Tor proofreaders, Peter (Brandon's assistant), but also there is a "gamma read" which is a proofread pass to a bit of a wider set of people, similar to the beta read. These books are really long, and even with so many eyes on the book, there are still typos in the final result. This is a super important phase. Nowadays, with Dragonsteel Entertainment being a reasonably big operation, Brandon doesn't need to micromanage this step, and Peter can deal with this. So while Brandon is done, the text isn't quite done yet. What else? Well, we need the art to all be finalized. I'm not exactly sure when the art needs to be turned in, but with every Stormlight book, there's tons of in-world art. Art takes a long time. I imagine plenty has been started already, but it might not be done quite yet. After all, we still don't have the US cover art. But I imagine the sheer weight of interior art takes a long time. Next up, there's the audiobook. Over half of Starsight's sales were audiobooks, if I recall correctly, so this is likely a large fraction of the audience. Oathbringer's audiobook is 55 hours, 5 minutes. I have to imagine actually recording it, doing multiple takes of sections, and editing it takes a very long time to record these mammoth audiobooks. Coming off editing Shardcast taking triple to quadruple the time for me to edit those, I have to believe the audiobooks are a huge undertaking. Of course, the audiobook can be recorded once the text is finalized, and once the art is done, printing can begin. You might still ask why you can't read the book after the text is finished. That's a fair question! But it occurred to me: the New York Times Bestseller list is a huge deal for advertising a book. From my understanding, you want to release all the editions of the book at the same time so they all count to the bestseller list. It would be a bad look to have the fourth Stormlight book not be a #1 bestseller. So, there are some important economic and industry reasons why we can't read it immediately. It sucks, but it is what it is. I know the wait has been brutal, but this is actually very fast for us to get the book out by November, and lots of people are putting in a lot of effort to get it to you. Still, we'll get preview chapters soon, which will be great! In Brandon's recent newsletter, he released a brand-new chapter of Rhythm of War, and if you sign up for the newsletter, it'll be sent to you! You can discuss it in our Rhythm of War spoiler board! Article image: the Gollancz cover of Rhythm of War, by Sam Green.
  13. News time! The UK cover for Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive book, has been revealed. What do you think of it? I'm told by Ben (a fan of the UK covers) that generally UK covers don't depict any particular scene but more are trying to convey an idea. I'm not sure how much analysis we can get out of this one. What are your thoughts on the cover? Brandon also linked to Waterstones's page on Rhythm of War, which explained how you can preorder a signed copy of the book. Neat! In other news, JordanCon is all online this year for obvious reasons, but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on. JordanCon is doing a few livestreams, and one in particular is happening tomorrow, April 17th, with Dragonsteel's Isaac and Kara. They are going to discuss the Kickstarter for The Way of Kings leatherbound and goodies within it. It will happen from 3pm-4pm Eastern time. (EDIT: there used to be a Zoom link for this but it appears the link was removed. I'm told there will be a livestream on YouTube.) Isaac is also going to be on cosmere.es, the Spanish cosmere fansite, this Saturday. We don't have a lot of details quite yet as that's a very new announcement, but you can check information on their Instagram. Lastly, we did a big overhaul on our 17th Shard rules, including a new, extensive Code of Conduct and more. Check it out! Here's the full cover art:
  14. This episode, we discuss our Rhythm of War (now the confirmed title of Stormlight 4) predictions! Or at least, we recap where our characters last were, and go through our hopes for each character one by one. We don't really know what the soul of this book will be. 15. It’s official folks - Stormlight Four has an confirmed title! First announced by Tor then retweeted by Brandon, the newest edition to the Stormlight saga has been confirmed to be named Rhythm of War. Brandon floated this as the tentative title back in February 2019 during the initial outlining of the book, and it appears it stuck firm. Like with previous Stormlight novels, Rhythm of War will also reflect the title of an in-world text. Brandon has confirmed that this text will not be written by human hand, which fits nicely with a Venli focused book. Will we see another piece from our spotlight character, like in Oathbringer? Or maybe we’ll see some historical singer writings? Like always, RAFO. Here’s what Brandon has to say about it: Along with a title confirmation, we’ve been given a sneak peak at what may end up being the end page art of either Rhythm of War or Stormlight Five. This gorgeous piece by Donato Giancola, depicts Talenelat’Elin, Herald of War, and has been described by Isaac Stewart, Brandon’s art director, as striking “...the right balance between realism and symbolism, and gives us a heroic, yet tormented, version of this beloved Herald.” This painting is the first in what seems to be a full set of Herald portraits, with multiple other pieces currently in the works. According to Issac, which Herald’s end up in each book will be depended on who best fits the novel’s theme and which artwork pairs well together. Isaac explains: Last, (but not least!) Tor's post has also confirmed that Michael Whelan will be designing, what we all know will be, a stunning art piece for the cover of the American edition of Rhythm of War. Many keen eyed fan’s have been quick to notice the symmetry in the book abbreviations - WoK, WoR, OB, RoW - and speculation has begun about whether Stormlight Five’s title will follow the same pattern and be KoW. Think this might be the case? Put your comments or title predictions in the comments below!
  16. i feel like there's a lot of loose ends we're not going to see wrapped up because of the one year gap. Sure, we'll have the aftermath, and they might be summed up in a memory or dialogue, but it's not the same as being there as it happens. Seeing the expressions on their faces, so to speak. The thing reaction shots I was really looking forward to seeing was what happens after Jasnah finds Ash and Taln. What Ash's reaction to waking up in (I assumeh) Urithiru is. What Jasnah has to say to her. How Jasnah breaks the news to Dalinar & co that she has two Heralds in custody, would they like to interview them? (Would they recognize them? Some of them saw Ash and Taln during the battle, but it was pretty busy and there was evil mood lighting).
