  1. My main theory that changes how we count Shallan's Ideals is that Shallan said an Ideal as she killed Testament. It would explain which swords she's using in WoR and how they are working. 1st Ideal— Same for all Orders. She said this early in her childhood. 2nd Ideal— She said this first to Testament. It was probably simple and childlike, given her age, maybe “I love you” or “you are my (only) true friend” being all alone in the Davar House. My theory: Lightweavers earn their Blade at 2nd Ideal, not 3rd. We've seen Windrunners and Edgedancers earn blade at 3rd Ideal (WoR for Kaladin, Edgedancer for Lift). Some don't even bond a spren until later Ideals (like Skybreakers in OB). Bottom line, Orders progress at different rates and makes sense from a Cultivation-based viewpoint (she would like variety in progression). 2nd Ideal— "I killed my father" is said to Pattern. This means that he's now a blade by the end of TWoK but can’t manifest yet because he’s weak in thinking and complex ideas. He can't even manifest physically until Shallan draws his pattern in the beginning of WoR. This means that Tyn is killed by Testament. In the moment before killing Tyn, Shallan notes: Notice: "But for her, it didn't have to be ten". I think "her" refers to Testament, not Shallan. Testament doesn't need to be summoned in 10 heartbeats because she is still partially bonded to Shallan. We also know deadeyes can be summoned in less, such as with Maya and Adolin (I think they got down to 7 beats). Right at this point Shallan begins to create Veil to hide the past about Testament (confirmed in RoW). The moment of her using Testament after all these years is what pushes her to make Veil, since that action of using Testament is what starts to bring the memories back. 3rd Ideal— My theory: "I hate you" is said to Testament. Yep, Shallan broke their bond as she swore the 3rd Ideal. Testament feels shame for letting Shallan kill her mother and accepts these words as truth, that she knows Shallan truly hates herself and Testament. It would be a great twist, since we wouldn't think that you can swear an Ideal while killing your spren. But Testament is the only one who needs to accept the Truths, and she does if moved to shame. 3rd Ideal— "I killed my mother" is said to Pattern. This was said after the Oathgate transfer, so Pattern had to have been a sword at that point already. This fits with the idea that Cryptics can be a blade by the 2nd Ideal. There is not nearly enough Investiture in Testament for her to do that, being a deadeyes; she can sometimes help soulcast and be a Blade, but that’s it. She moves slower than Pattern does in the Cognitive Realm, so Shallan running to the Oathgate and activating it at end of WoR might've happened too fast for Testament to keep up with her. We also know deadeyes move slowly and keep their distance from their Shardbearers (Maya walking a ways behind the group in OB). Shallan has no need to summon her afterwards, now that Pattern manifested as a Blade already in the chasms and again for the Oathgate, AND Shallan acknowledging how Pattern is different than other Blades, so she finds no need to summon Testament again. The transfer occurs and Testament is left on the platform in the Cognitive Realm, the mysterious island in the east where she was found by the shopkeeper (RoW) and held with her after that. 4th Ideal— "I'm terrified" is said to Testament in TWoK. These truths to her are still pretty simplistic because Testament is from a childhood bond. This grants some soulcasting for Shallan but it's still very weak. By the end of WoR, there's a that WoB says Shallan is on 4th Ideal. He's referring to this one, not any Ideals with Pattern. 4th Ideal-"I killed [my spren]" was said to herself in Kalak's study. Pattern has not yet accepted this (or maybe did offscreen but that seems weak), because he didn’t hear the truth. Remember, she forbid Pattern from following her to Kalak's house. 5th Ideal— This will be a one-and-done truth, a bridge between her bonds with the two spren. It will heal Testament and propel her to 5th ideal for both bonds. Testament’s Ideals revolve around shallan as a child while Pattern’s exposes her childhood, so 5th Ideal is a combination that satisfies both of her spren, and they both accept it. This makes it plausible for Shallan to sweat a single Ideal in the next book. Thoughts?
  2. Listening through RoW for the second time, I’m given to wonder: are Shards coming back together? We know that Stormlight and Voidlight mix into Warlight. Will the Shards themselves come together? And would peace be achieved by creating a combined Shard of War? Dalinar, as the Bondsmith of the Stormfather, seems to have as much power as can be had that once belonged to Honor. If the Storms merged, or perhaps if Dalinar loses the contest of Champions, but Odium goes down anyway…. Could Dalinar become War? Part of me thinks that this might be a step backwards for Dalinar. Part of me thinks it would be kinda lame for Brandon to do the exact same thing on Roshar as he did on Scadrial…… but maybe the Shards are coming together. They were never meant to be separate. Maybe Dalinar’s next big challenge is to fail in his contest and fall back into war, and claw his way into something better. And then there’s a question of what kind of Shard War would be. Hatred, restricted by oaths and discipline? Battle, but organized, with rules of engagement, Codes that control violence? Battle being handled by soldiers so that civilians are left in peace? I don’t know…..
  3. I'm not sure if this belongs here in SA or in the Mistborn thread but the stuff I'll quote to support this is from RoW so I'm going to go with here. I'm also not sure if someone has already made this theory before. There are 200,000 posts here so it seems likely but I still think this is a good idea and worth discussing. (I have been listening to the audiobooks so I don't have specific page numbers. I'll give what chapter I took it from and the context so you can find it though.) RoW chapter 39 - 23:39:00. This happens after the invasion of the Tower when fused and regals are searching the Tower for downed radiants. Kaladin is in his father's hospital area and hears news of these enemy troops coming toward him. He picks up a scalpel and prepares for battle, then thinks this: "the scalpel of a surgeon was a very different thing from a soldier's knife. a surgeon's knife could be a subtle thing, meant to cause as little harm as possible. a delicate contradiction, like Kaladin himself." "it had been designed to heal, but could kill just as efficiently, like Kaladin himself" also, in Harmony's letter (at the beginning of RoW Chapter 29), he says, "I have begun searching for a pathway out of this conundrum by seeking the ideal person to act on my behalf. Someone who embodies both Preservation and Ruin. A....sword, you might say, who can both protect and kill." I believe these quotes are referencing the same person. Kaladin Kaladin is a complicated person. He has years of formal training as a surgeon and years of formal training as a killer. He knows how to do both very effectively and seems to find a balance between the two by the end of RoW (after swearing his 4th ideal). But this complicated past is exactly what makes him perfect for this job. He is very familiar with ruining and preserving. I believe that in the second 5-book series in Stormlight Archive, Kal will meet Sazed/Harmony and they will strike a deal similar to what Odium wanted with Dalinar, though, not quite so destructive. Harmony doesn't need a general to lead his armies or a bondsmith to free him from his prison. Harmony just needs an avatar to act through. Someone who will truly, deeply understand him, his goals, and what keeps him from accomplishing them. That's the theory. Let me know what you guys think of this! I've been thinking about this for a week or two and really feel like it fits. If Kal can find a way over to Scadrial, this would be super cool!
  4. It's our last Rhythm of War topic for 2022, and our last Shardcast before The Lost Metal! It's Adolin and Maya, because we've never done a dedicated cast on Adolin even before RoW. We talk about Adolin and Sadeas, pronunciation, ADOLINBLADE, how amazing Adolin and Maya are, and whether Maya will be healed. Also featuring a ghostly pumpkin. This episode, we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Jessie (Lady Lameness), Rosemary (Kaymyth), Ala (Rasarr)! 5. Did she die in the well? Last thing said was that Kaladin left her behind as he swam past to get to the surface and she was humming angrily…Then they get shut in. The next time we see her she is presumably in the same body and no one mentions anything about it.
  6. Spoilers for RoW Also, sorry for the late replies, my phone has been wacky until recently
  7. Hi this is my first post so bear with me if I get a few things wrong but I had a thought is the fourth ideal specific two the knights radiant Who says it cuz when kaladin said it it sounded very specific to his character thoughts ?
  8. I have a suspicion that the killing of Adonalsium might not be what it sounds like. Maybe they were a willing participant in what happened. A possible foreshadowing of a possibly repeating theme in the Cosmere.
  9. In RoW, Adin seems to suspect that his father had attracted a spren. Do you think it is an unfounded teenage hope or there is some validity to it? Since Adin's father was awake during the occupation, he can't be of the first three ideals. Could he be a squire? Or perhaps, like Kaladin, he was close to the fourth one? On my first read, I though it unlikely that we have an unknown radiant in the tower, but now that I reread RoW, it seems interesting that the father is shown to be in the thick of resistance several times. I keep thinking that, perhaps, Adin's chapters are not about Adin, after all
  10. So, back in the recreance, all the knights radiant broke their oaths, and the spren of those knights became "dead" shardblades that roshar fought over for centuries. But not all radiants have shardblades. From everything we've seen, you have to be at least of the third ideal. So what about all those spren bonded to first and second ideal radiants? They couldn't have gotten off scott-free and survived because then the spren would know more about the recreance and why it happened which, as we saw in ROW, they don't. Did they become deadeyes too, that don't have an associated shardblade? Did they somehow become blades? Did things just work differently back then for some reason and all knights got shardblades?
  11. Okay, so I don’t know if this has been explained elsewhere or what but I’ve been wondering why in the Scadrial system the Shard’s impact can be seen in the Godmetals and the Mist but on Roshar it is in the form of Light, Tones, and Rhythms. What do you think is the reason behind this is? Also, would there be a Godmetal, Light/tone/rhythm, and maybe even type of breath (as breaths are little pieces of Endowment itself so are a reflection of its power (I think? Please correct me)) for each and every Shard? (And maybe the combination of all is Adonalisium’s Light? (in Roshar’s case)) So far I’ve assumed that that is just the natural form that Investiture takes in a given system but if that’s the case (it’s just natural) then why that form and not some other? Sorry if this seems a bit cluttered and messy or just plain stupid
  12. From the album: General SA Art

Adolin was such a badass in Ch. 35, though my fav scene is actually when he hopped on Gallant and rode with Maya XD (My new fav trio!)
  13. Wit is now a Lightweaver and we have a pretty decent idea of his limits with harming other people/animals. He can't really eat meat or hurt/kill living people or animals. So, does that apply to spren? Could he potentially break his oaths and make Design a deadeyed spren? I think yes because he can beat up Kelsier, a Cognitive Shadow, in Mistborn Secret History. However, we know that spren and Cognitive Shadows are not identical so maybe he can't do it.
  14. My dear German-speaking Stormlight fans!
  15. Hi all! Thought I would run this one by you, What if the Ten Fools (three of which we have names for) are real, and what if they are creations of Whimsy? Although we really know nothing at all about the Shard Whimsy, I feel that this is right up their alley- Honor creates his ten Heralds, and Whimsy sees their opportunity to parody these solemn and epically heroic individuals. Whimsy creates their own ten highly invested cognitive shadows, each of whom bears a comedic flaw in contrast to the mighty attributes of the Heralds. I am in love with the idea of these ten immortal, super invested, interstellar jesters. Spreading Whimsy, but not being all that helpful to the grand scheme of things. My ambition is to someday put this theory to Brandon to get his views on whether this has any merit. In the meantime, I really wanted to share it with you all! Thanks gang, stay silly
  16. I tried searching, to see if this has been discussed yet, so I apologize if this is an old idea. So, I'm re-reading Elantris for the first time since Rhythm of War, and I realized that Seons might be tapping into a "Cosmere constant" that, on Roshar, manifests in the singer rhythms. More specifically, there are a few instances of Seon's emotions being reflected in the pulsing (rhythm) of their inner light. Example: I don't know if anybody has ever asked Brandon if the Seon rhythms are similar/connected to the Singer rhythms; but this does not seem like a coincidence to me. (searching Arcanum only showed the "Selphone" pun) I thought I would post here, if just to start discussion. . .
  17. I’m doing a reread of Rhythm of War, and just noticed that in Lifts interlude, when she’s talking about hiding in Urithiru’s air ducts and other places (pg 1055 in the ebook), that “Up here in the network of stone ventilation shafts, she found the occasional mink or other scavenger, but it was actually her domain”. One would expect a mouse or rat to be mentioned if Brandon was going to mention a non-shell based rodent, but he chooses mink. And I think he’s definitely trying to be sly about mentioning our favorite escape artist here. They could probably learn a lot from each other. No real point here, I just think it’s a cool reference that I didn’t pick up on in my first read through.
  18. After reading the released chapters of Secret Project 4, something that struck me as interesting was how Auxiliary, an apparently dead spren, was bonded to Nomad and called itself a Knight and him a Squire. While it is most likely this is just a personal quirk of his, it reminded me of how in Rhythm Of War, during adolin's trial, Maya seems to swear the First Ideal during her defence of Adolin. With Maya being a deadeyes, our current definition of a "dead" spren, I am interested if in some way these are two similar cases of a "reverse" nahel bond between a spren and a human with the spren being the one having sworn the oaths.
  19. Moash and Kaladin were both raised to 4th nahn and granted land for becoming Shardbearers. Are all Radiants who reach the Shardblade oath being granted 4th nahn status? The land part doesn’t mean much while Alethkar is occupied, but if the humans retake the country, will loads of former darkeyes take over parcels of land across Alethkar? Will natural-born lighteyes accept that? It’s one thing in exile during a time of emergency, but I bet many of them want to return to the previous status quo. I think darkeyes, both Radiants and regular, will have to struggle during peacetime to keep the gains they made during the war with the fused/singers.
  20. From the album: General SA Art

Based on Rhythm of War Ch.15. It's my favorite sheet fight scene with Kaladin and Zahel's stunt though XD
  21. hi i've been making one of these of every book and i recently finished rhythm of war so here it is :> https://ensegonada.tumblr.com/post/675166618884636672/rhythm-of-war-brandon-sanderson
  22. So, Kaladin is made a slave and the surviving members of his squad are killed so that Meridas Amaram can get a shardblade. We know that Amaram doesn't like to share the credit, but is a big fan of sharing the blame, but... Amaram implies that his buddy Restares was the man who was "right". When he is talking to a storm warden about killing the remaining members of Kaladin’s squad. Why did Restares want that? Just in case there is a person who clicked by accident and hasn't read Rhythm of War... This raises the big question... What were the Sons of Honor really doing? We will get some answers from Gavilar in book 5, hopefully, but with Ameram, Ialai and Restares and his interludes there should be some sorts of clues.

    Kaladin in uniform

    From the album: RoW Kaladin

And the version without the shardplate because I spent a lot of time on that uniform and you can barely see it in the final drawing lol

  24. From the album: RoW Kaladin

I wanted to draw the moment after Kaladin swears the 4th ideal and gets his shardplate. In my enthusiasm I forgot I don’t know how to draw armour ^^; still, considering this was very much out of my comfort zone it turned out pretty okay
