  1. I'm realativly new to Mistborn, and I just finished the 1st book. I mostly understand the rules of Allomancy, but I have some questions regarding the fight between Vin and the Lord Ruler. I know that you can't use Allomancy on metal touching someone's body (like how you couldn't kill an Inquisitor by pulling the spikes out of their bodies), but how did the Lord Ruler use Allomancy on the metals in Vin's stomach? Was it because of his increased power of combining Allomancy and Feruchemy? Or something different? Or was it just something I missed?
  2. So, we all know that Alcatraz breaks, well, everything! So, why don't his oculators lenses break? Am I missing something from alcatraz lore?
  3. Hey Brandon I am writing a Paper comparing Kelsier to a prevalent anime character name Lelouche (from the anime code geass). Anyway, I have been searching your forums and responses, compiling quotes from you talking about Keiser, and I have a few questions I was hoping to answer directly. Although you state that Kelsier is a villain, I wonder if you believe he has morals. If so, could you outline what his moral compass might be? Further, would you say that he views people as tools or a means to an end rather than a person, or is he too genuine of a person for that? I am re-reading the original trilogy to try and answer some of these questions, but some direct input from the author would be super helpful.
  4. What does it mean to be the Sword of Harmony? Wax and Marasi ended up taking the big actions to thwart Autonomy, so why did Wax need to be the Sword? Is he like a central spoke on the wheel of Harmonies plans? How is that different from Wayne? It seems like the only thing Wax does that no one else in the group is capable of is killing many, many people. I get that they need a murder machine and to kill in order to save really fits the ruin to preserve thing, but is that really what a Sword is? If Telsin wasn't on the road to being the avatar of Autonomy but still killed Elendel with the bomb, would she essentially be Autonomy's Sword? I get that the dual Intent of Harmony is represented in the dual edges of a sword and Autonomy only has one Intent, but how is Wax chosen besides the ability to kill with skill? (if there is something wrong w the format of this post please lmk it is my first)
  5. So I bought tickets to Dragonsteel Con this week, but I'm not really sure what I'm going to. I've never actually been to a con before, despite my previous nerdiness, and I have some questions for you smart people who went last year. Is it safe to go with my 10 and 14 year old sisters? Is a Wax and Wayne costume required, or can I choose to wear something unrelated? Am I required to wear a costume, or can I go in regular clothes? Will Brandon be wandering around in the crowd with us, or will he have a schedule we can look at so we know where he's going to be? Thanks a bunch. I'm nervous, but I've never been so excited. *burns pewter to avoid throwing up*
  6. I was rereading the Stormlight Archives and i found something confusing. In RoW Page 527 it said, "Before beginning their assault. the humans had poured barrels of water into the breach here- and it had rained on the stormform Regals below. Their powers reacted poorly around water, something Venli had always found somewhat ironic." Then in WoR Page 1183 during the Everstorm It said "Nearby, another crash of lighting left a small group of Parshendi." and it was raining during that time. Do their powers work in rain but not covered in water? I thought that the form was for moving through storms.
  7. Not sure about anyone else, but I'm endlessly intrigued by Ulim. And not just his weasely, sycophantic ways. There's a lot of weirdness going on with him. So I wanted to put together a post laying out what we know, and what mysteries remain surrounding that Voidspren we all love to hate. What We Know 1. Appearance Ulim generally takes one of two forms. Either that of rolling, crackling red lightning/energy moving across surfaces; or that of a small human male with "odd eyes" and long hair that waves or ripples in an unseen wind. He can also vanish, making only certain people able to see him. And on one occasion, we also see him with spikes breaking through his skin and then retracting: RoW, Chapter 77. 2. Personality and Mannerisms To put it bluntly, Ulim is just ... the ... worst. He's dismissive, derogatory, and downright callous ("Oh, you thought she was alive?") to anyone he views as bring of a lower station than him. Which seems to include pretty much everyone except for the Fused and Odium himself. Although he's not beyond making snide remarks about even the Fused and the Unmade, provided they're not around to hear it: Row, Chapter 73. But when in the presence of a Fused, he's obsequious and frankly, more than a little cowardly. He's concerned about others making him look bad in front of them. He lies constantly, and is a master at manipulating people. While being dismissive is his go to move, he's plenty able to pour on the praise and promises of future glory if that's what the situation calls for. And while he seems firmly on the side of the Fused and Odium, he speaks and gestures in human ways. Here he is in RoW 59, somewhat reluctantly deciding to work with Venli, while using what seems a very un-singer like expression: Here he is in OB Interlude 3 after Venli grows angry at the way Ulim is speaking about Eshonai: Here's another point later in the same chapter, and this time a Fused calls him out for it: He's unforgiving toward those he views as traitors to Odium's cause (even when they do exactly what he wants them to do). Oh, and he thinks pretty highly of himself (perhaps not entirely undeservedly) for what he was able to accomplish in summoning the Everstorm. This is again from OB Interlude 3: 3. Abilities (Note: I'm proceeding in this section under the assumption that what we see Ulim do with Venli, he would also be able to with other singers) Ulim is able to move in and out of a singer's gemheart without needing a highstorm (though it may require some level of permission from the singer). He's able to crowd into the gemheart along with whatever lesser spren gives the singer their current form. While inside a singer's gemheart, Ulim is able to speak to the singer and even hear their thoughts. By taking up residence inside a singer's gemheart, he also grants them the ability to hear Odium's rhythms. Perhaps his most impactful ability is the ability to manipulate a singer's emotions. He makes Venli dance like a puppet on strings, and through her manages to manipulate a number of other listeners as well in pursuit of his goals. (If interested, you can read in the thread below about my theory that Ulim is actually using vibrations/rhythms to perform this emotional manipulation): As mentioned above, Ulim is able to scoot along surfaces in the form of cracking lightning. And although he doesn't appear to able to fly, he does seem able to sort of jump while in lightning form: This is also one of several instances where we see that Ulim can make physical contact with a singer. Other instances are when he hops onto Venli's shoulder, grabbing onto her hair, and shortly later in RoW 77 when he lands on Venli's arm and begins moving toward her gemheart. During that pivotal moment, Ulim also demonstrates that he can vibrate energy through a singer. After hitting on the idea of starting a war with the Alethi, he vibrates energy through Venli while trying to convince her, not just to go along with that plan, but also that it was in fact her idea. There is a limit to his ability to interact with the physical world, though. For example, he is not able to carry a bag of gemstones, and brings Venli along to do that. One ability that Ulim does not have is the ability to see in Shadesmar. I don't know how notable this is. I tried to look back through the first four books to see whether spren are generally able to do this or not and couldn't really find anything definitive one way or the other. 4. Ulim's Role in Odium's Plans Although it is never explained, the Fused (and even one stormform singer) refer to Ulim as the Envoy. He made his way to Roshar by passing through the barrier storm that blocks the way to Braize in Shadesmar. Through some unknown method, he was pulled into a gemstone in the Physical Realm of Roshar at a place in the southern ocean that, presumably, corresponds with the location of the barrier storm in Shadesmar. Axindweth, a Feruchemist agent of Odium delivered the gemstone into Venli's hands and tempted Venli with promises that it held the secret to granting forms that could heal her mother's illness. After Venli releases Ulim, he begins putting into motion Odium's plan to circumvent Taln, who after 4,500 years of torture has still not broken. By manipulating Venli, revealing information about new forms, and sharing human gem cutting techniques, he eventually succeeds in getting nearly all of the listeners to adopt stormform. This allowed the singers to pull a large portion of the roiling barrier storm - that Odium had broken off and moved through Shadesmar to the the Shattere Plains - through to the Physical Realm. The result: the Everstorm, which restores the Connection and Identity of the singers who were lobotomized by the imprisonment of Ba-Ado-Mishram, and allows for the Fused (and other Voidspren as well I believe) to return Roshar for a good old-fashioned Desolation. After that, Ulim shows up just a couple of times in OB (searching for Eshonai, and the scene where Venli and the other singers are lined up to accept Fused souls in the Everstorm). And then he pops up early on in the invasion of Urithiru (RoW 42), letting Raboniel know that they've found Navani, after which they have this intriguing exchange: And that's it. We don't get to see him again throughout the rest of RoW. 5. Miscellaneous This didn't really fit in above, but I wanted to mention that Ulim recognizes the Heralds (at least Shalash, Kalak, and Nale). And Nale, at least, knows Ulim by name. Relatedly, Ulim is terrified of Nale Remaining Questions about Ulim 1. Why is he called the Envoy? 2. Why does he both appear human and have human mannerisms? 3. What's with the unseen wind that's always rippling his hair when he's in his human form? What's so "odd" about his eyes? 4. How the heck did he make it through the barrier storm? 5. How does he communicate with Axindweth and other agents of Odium? In RoW 77 he says that "I haven’t heard from Axindweth in a few days. I’m certain it’s all right. We have a meeting point where she leaves things for me. The gemstones will be there.” How was he communicating with her? How often did he go to the meeting point? What else did she leave him there? How did he carry it? Also, who are these other agents? 6. Why can't he see into Shadesmar? And more broadly, if anyone can point me to any information about whether other sapient spren are able to do this or not, I'd appreciate it. 7. What's the deal with the creepy little poem that Venli seems to use in RoW 86 to locate/summon Ulim ("Say a name on the breeze and it will return, she thought") 8. What was up with those spikes poking through his skin when he was freaking out he night of Gavilar's assassination? (I've seen someone compare that to how Ati appears a couple of times in Secret History; also reminiscent of the several times when light seems to be poking through Rayse in RoW) 9. What did he mean when he referred to Navani as a new toy? Has he used humans as pawns in the past? Who? When?
  8. In one of my magic systems, everyone's magic has a different color. So, what is your color, and why?
  9. Hello fellow beings of the shard! I have been told that I should put these things on a forum, so I shall. this is a place where I ask ridiculous questions I asked to newcomers of the shard to the general public, because everyone should get a chance to answer them. since this is my the first time, I shall put two. 1. If you were to put a nunchuck wielding nun anywhere in the cosmere and have it gain something from that planet’s magic system, which planet would you put it on? 2. Which of Brando Sando’s books do you think would be more interesting if it had a house containing a little girl that fell and crushed a witch in it?
  10. Hi guys, I just finished the first reading of Oathbringer, just in time before the release of Novella 3.5 and Book 4, and I am delving through this forum to read theories now that I am caught up on the SA books. I am planning to listen to OB on Graphic Audio soon but starting with the last 35 chapters or so, I started taking notes on some of the unclear things to me. I am reading analysis articles about the book and the various events, but thought to ask you here the questions I have in mind because I am sure I have missed most of these answers. So thank you again for those who have some answers to the below: [SPOILERS BELOW FOR OATHBRINGER] . 1- Interlude I-7: Venli mentions that the Alethi mistakenly thought that the greatshells were the gods of the singers. Has this been discussed elsewhere? Is there more info on this point? 2- Interlude I-10: Is the Hog that attacks Sheler a greatshell or a new animal? 3- Interlude I-11: Did Venli bond two spren: the voidspren in her gemheart and Timbre? Can humans and other singers do the same or is it a unique case for Venli? 4- Ch89: Are Nightblood and Vivenna / Azure's sword shardblades? Do swords on Nalthis and Roshar contain the same type of Investiture? 5- Ch 89: Can a certain type of shardblades be summoned / used in Shadesmar: Honorblades, Dead Shardblades, Sprenblades? 6- Ch 92: Why do some people call Szeth by his dad's name (Neturo) and others by his grandfather's name (Valano)? 7- Ch 92: What does Szeth mean that he knew a voice similar to Nightblood's in his youth? We probably have to wait to his flashbacks to know more? 8- Ch 92: Why does Nightblood only burn eyes on Roshar? 9- Ch 92: Is Shashara from Nalthis the same person as Shalash on Roshar? 10- Ch 92: Is Nightblood's consumption of Stormlight on Roshar the same mechanism as him consuming Breaths on Nalthis - as both are types of Investiture? Is Nightblood a spren on Roshar? 11- Ch 99: Do the Spren use the copper on the ship in Shadesmar to communicate through vibration? Is this related to some Cosmere metallic quality (Should I find something in Mistborn about this)? 12- Ch 100: Why can't Dalinar use the Stormfather as a shardblade? 13- Ch 100: What is the metal that falls from the sky and can block a shardblade (is it also a reference to a metal from Mistborn)? 14- Ch 100: Why do Vedens look Alethi but speak a foreign tongue? 15- Ch 101: Are screaming blades only the ones left during the Recreance by the Knights Radiant? 16- Ch 101: Do we know who Ico's daughter is? 17- Ch 106: What does Nin mean when he tells Szeth: "The others must interpret what they have sworn before and I hope they will see the truth?" 18- Ch 108: Mythica book mentions that the Midnight Mother was destroyed at Aharietiam. How is she still in Urithiru? 19- Ch 109: What does Venli mean when she says that the spren betrayed the singers for the humans? 20- Ch 114: Why did the Nightwatcher call Dalinar both son of Honor and son of Odium? 21- Ch 114: How does the Nightwatcher know about Nightblood? 22- Ch 114: When Dalinar returned after meeting Cultivation, he hears only leaves rustling and thinks he should hear something else. What should have he heard? Screams of children? 23- Ch 115: Does Odium change his appearance depending on who sees him - Dalinar sees him human, Venli sees him as a parshman? 24- Ch 116: What are the yellow spren leading the Fused? 25- Ch 117: Why did Lift say that the Nightwatcher lied to her? 26- Ch 119: In the battle of Thaylen Field, there were 3 Un-made? The 2 in the Thunderclasts and Yelig-Nar as the Black Smoke, or there were any additional ones? 27- Ch 120: Amaram's transformation of the ground to liquid after ingesting the crystal (Yalig-Nar??) - is that some form of Voidbinding? 28- Ch 121: Why did the Fused instruct Moash to kill Jezrien? 29- Ch 122: What does Adrotagia mean when she tells Taravangian: "The Herald's insanity prompted us?" 30- Ch 122: Is Renarin's spren, Glys, still corrupted after the end of OB? 31- Ch 122: How did Jezrien's honorblade go from Szeth to Leshwi (who then gives it to Moash?) 32- Ch 122: Nohadon knew how to write and read. When did the men stop reading and writing? 33- Ch 122: Why did Dalinar "accept the sword "only through the cloth"? What does it mean? Thank you for answering any of these; I know they are too many to be all answered by one contributor
  11. So we know hesina has something important going on likely to do with her parents. 1. She had fallen significantly in social status since her childhood https://wob.coppermind.net/events/61/#e1335 2. Both of her parents are not darkeyed meaning at least one of them is a lighteyes or foreigner https://wob.coppermind.net/events/324/#e9290 3. Kaladin is related to the former queen presumably through his mother https://wob.coppermind.net/events/360/#e10909 4. on top of that kaladin could have potentially managed to get married to laral and she is far far above him in social standing, even with kal being high ranking and their fathers being friends it’s still a bit too big of a gap without other reasons. so is it unreasonable to think it possible that someone at Urithiru May recognize hesina or that she will know people there? even if she was onlt related to some people of middling importance she would surly still know someone there. now we really don’t know enough information to judge who would recognize or know her but i think we can try and judge if someone would. (my really really crackpot theory/ hope is that she is sebarial and Palona’s daughter, this is almost certainly not true but still)
  12. Hey, is Prof otherwise known as limelight based on the Rush song of the same name. I noticed a few lyrical/thematic parallels, such as "one must put up barriers to keep one's self intact" obviously akin to his force fields and more subtle ones like "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend" echoing how he met David. As a huge Rush fan I am not entirely partial to this idea but there at least seem to be a lot of consistencies between the song and the character. (as a new member I can't post a link but it's not hard to look up)
  13. The Stormfather mentions that Jezrein’s powers simply were, and weren’t named until Ishar founded the Knights Radiant. Only then did we get the Windrunner powers, even if they were modelled after Jezrein’s Honorblade. The same goes for every order. Similarly, Honor seems to have created the dual surge framework when he gave the Honorblades to the Heralds. Yet, the Eila Stele mentions that Humans destroyed Ashyn with Surgebinding, ancient powers of Spren and Surges. How are both of these possible? One more inconsistency is that Brandon has mentioned in a WoB that he hasn’t yet decided on the exact mechanism for the Human Exodus. They could have directly teleported over, Oathgate travel style, or they could have walked over in the Cognitive. The fact that the details are not so important that they had to be set beforehand I think is pretty strong evidence for the use of the Surge of Transportation, as it covers both those possibilities. Another thing that adds weirdness here is the fact that the kind of Surgebinding that humans discovered on their own, and presumably the kind that later got molded into Knight Radiant orders by Ishar, was unexpected to the Heralds. Even though most of them were alive at the time of the Exodus, when Humans used Surgebinding to destroy Ashyn. So what Surgebinding was used before? One possibility is the Dawnshards - these are rumored to have been used to destroy the Tranquiline Halls. Maybe the surgebinding used on Ashyn was only through the Dawnshards, but if so, then the Dawnshards don’t fit the naming scheme. Dawn- seems to be associated to the time when Humans first came to Roshar, and were switching to Honor. The era of a new Dawn, new access to the white bright openly honest stormlight of Honor, after Odium’s pitch black deceptive void. We have Dawncities, Dawnsingers, Dawnchant. Why would Dawnshards be different? The term “Dawnsingers” seem to be referring to those singers which came to a refugee humanity’s aid on Honor’s (or Cultivation’s) behest when they first came to Roshar. They helped found the Dawncities. Theirs was the language of the Dawnchant - a language referred to as a chant, implied to have a rhythmic component to it. Then why are the Dawnshards the odd one out? Shouldn’t these be the Shards of the Dawnsingers, or at least something related to that era? If they are, then they can’t have also been present on Ashyn, unless the switch happened on Ashyn, before the migration. Even then… no. Another interpretation is that when they say “Of spren and Surges”, they mean that the Surges are the powers of the Spren. As in, to the writer’s perspective, the surges are an attribute not independent of the idea of spren, which makes sense considering the ecology they lived in, and the composite soul, “Forms” based physiology of the Singers. Even if the powers humans had used were just Surges, independent of Spren, to a Singer, they may look like Spren powers. Maybe the original Surgebinding was granted by the Micro-organism based magic system of Ashyn. If so, how does Odium fit in? Another weird thing is that it is said that the Shardblade and Shardplate concept was given to the Radiants by the Heralds. If so, what was Surgebinding like before the Shardblade and plate came into the picture? I thought the kind of Surgebinding that was discovered by the Humans, and which came off as unexpected to Heralds, only came forth by the spren trying to copy what Honor did with the Honorblades. If so, wouldn’t Shardblades be a part of that copying? Are there two components to this? Maybe the spren only learnt to bond rudimentarily enough to grant surges, but Ishar then took that and made it work more like the Honorblades? And also brought in the Shardplates? Another curious thing is that Surgebinding and Souldcasting were two different magic systems in Nohadon’s mind. Even though Soulcasting is just an applied Surge of Transformation. Also, Uruthiru already exists by Nohadon’s time. So we can safely say that this Uruthiru has not yet been made the seat of the Knights Radiant, that will happen much later down the line. The Knights Radiant can’t even be in the picture here, if Soulcasting and Surgebinding are perceived as two distinct systems. This perception into two distinct systems works if at this point in time the Surgebinding in question was not of the Knight Radiant variety, and each “Surgebinder” got only one of 10 surges. In this case, the variety of Surgebinder that only got the Surge of Transformation could look feasibly different from other Surgebinders, and these could be called Soulcasters, and not Surgebinders. If it is of the Knights Radiant variety, then it would be apparent that it’s just another Surge, because the people who could do it could also do another Surge, and then it would take active effort to think that those two kinds of Surgebinders can do something other than Surgebinding and only one Surge, while the other orders get two Surges. Also the spren could have explained that. The fact that the Way of Kings was used as a foundational text for the Knights Radiant corroborates that the Knights Radiant were not formed by Nohadon’s time, I guess. Yet another possible explanation is that when the Spren first started emulating Honorblades, their version of the bond was so rudimentary that it only granted the first Surge each order starts with. Possibly this is why each order has the first Oath in common. First Oath Radiants are what all Surgebinders in Nohadon’s era were like. Maybe the spren could also do Shardblades. In this explanation, Ishar came later and upgraded their capability to bond, implementing 4 further Oaths for each Order, teaching them how to grant the other corresponding Surge that Honorblades gave them, and otherwise properly founding both the system of magic and the organisational structure of the Knights Radiant. This is where he gave them Shardplate, and also the second surge. What do others think of these? Are there other theories out there? What am I missing in this… “rant”? Edit: When I say inconsistencies, I'm not critiquing Sanderson's worldbuilding or writing - I'm saying there's conflicting information in world, and maybe we can try and figure out what the actual history could possibly be like by looking at these... "disconnects"
  14. Reposting this from my introduction post **Warning: This post contains MASSIVE spoilers for Oathbringer. Proceed either with caution, or not at all.** Hi guys! This is my first post here, and I want to talk about Dalinar. Near the end of Oathbringer, Dalinar is able to recreate Honor’s perpendicularity by joining the 3 Realms. I was wondering what the extent of these powers are. Could Dalinar travel to the Spiritual Realm? What would happen if he did? Does this require Stormlight? At the end of Oathbringer, Kaladin said that Dalinar was able to renew gemstones for his trip, which indicates that Dalinar is able to combine the Realms at any time. Can Dalinar do this because he is a Bondsmith, or is it something else entirely? We know that Bondsmiths are somewhat special among Radiants, as there can only be three, and the order was founded by Ishar, who (I think) Ash said was the only Herald that didn’t lose his mind. Dalinar seemed able to do something similar when he operated the Oathgate, despite having no Shardblade. This power is surely the same as the one Dalinar used later on to unite the Realms, but this quote makes it sound less like a Bondsmith power, as opening the Oathgate seemed to hurt the Stormfather, or at least bother him deeply. This probably wouldn’t happen had this been typical Bondsmith behavior. This raises a question: if it’s not a Bondsmith ability, then where did this power come from?
  15. Hei everyone. I have some questions. Just read Warbreaker and absolutely loved it. Previously i have read Wheel of time, Kingkiller Chronicles, Malazan empire and more. Looking to start on a new series but with Brandon, where should i start? I THINK i understand that everything is in the same universe. But still, where should i begin? Best regards Eskild
  16. At the end of WoR, IIRC, Kaladin was granted noble status and even some lands to rule over. Previously, after becoming a shardbearer, Moash was told he could choose a noble house to join, or found his own. My question is, do we know if Kaladin joined an existing house, or founded his own? (Also, if anyone knows, where exactly are his lands located? I don't remember (T . T) I need to reread)
  17. Under the description of the Illumination surge, it says it is the surge of "light, sound, and various wave forms." Going by this description, can we conclude that Lightweavers can manipulate microwaves? And therefore are just walking microwaves with the power to heat things up?
  18. I'm not sure if this is a new restriction, but personalizations on Brandon's store are limited to 12 characters, for some reason. I'm wondering how I could ever fit a question into that limit, and how anyone else has, as well. (I've definitely seen other people's question exceeding this, so I'm not really sure what's going on...) The only thing I can think of is that Brandon decided to stop some of the questions coming through from book purchases—maybe due to the lack of space—though I have no idea is this is true. If anyone knows anything about this, please help
  19. Howdy everyone! I have read all of Brandon Sanderson's books, and have even browsed the forums here from time to time, but was waiting till I finished Oathbringer (via audiobook) to create an account. I'm looking forward to discussing some theories, but I have some questions: Does anyone have tips on the best way to use the search function? I would love to cut straight to some good threads about certain topics I am interested in, but it seems like when I search for key words, there are a lot of non-relevant threads to wade through. Recommendations would be appreciated! Topics I am interested in checking out: Theories on Adonalsium & the Shattering Locations of the known Shards Locations of the Heralds in SA Hoid/Wit Stormfather's siblings The Unmade Zahel/Vasher
  20. Hello all, So, while the book was massive and I see the point of not having all the interactions between characters on screen, I feel that some parts were underwhelming, as: The talk between Kaladin and Rlain was not showed, and I think they'd be able to learn a lot from each other, specially considering Kaladin was following a group of parshmen just before coming back. Shallan-Kaladin-Adolin interactions - even without all the shipping wars (and I was rooting for Shalladin), how can they just assume things all around? They're teenagers, ok, but still... Azure with everyone: like seriously, you're not wondering who is this person that seems to change appearances, sometimes has different hair color and scars that are bigger or smaller? i know you're used to Shallan and so on, but it can't seem normal, can it? And who also seems to have knowledge of many outside things, and maybe could help in other ways. Shallan also doesn't seem to care that Azure interacts with Adolin more than she does at the boat-spren-thing, I expected some more human reactions of her. Dalinar and Navani's interactions... oh, so now you remember your wife? Maybe let's talk about it? No? Dalinar's Stormfather-sword: they're not going to talk about it? Suddenly everything's fine? Jasnah comes back and her ward just did many crazy things, what's the best course? Put her as a scribe and not let her participate in a discussion full of other radiants? I know her character is smarter than that, it can't be she understands Shallan this little, it was obvious it'd push her away. So many other talks that were just suddenly ignored and never picked back. It feels like the characters just don't talk about problems, they only discuss battle plans (and Dalinar talks to King T., that's it) and politics, ignoring that what makes the KR is being broken. They always seem on the verge of talking, but then just walk away. That's not how life goes, and it felt rather unnatural to me, the other 2 books seemed less bothering in that aspect. The book as one is very good and explained a lot, but I missed some things. What's your opinion on these stuff and others?
  21. Recently, Wizards of the Coast has been releasing little bits of roleplaying fluff for D&D 5th edition for each of the worlds that we have recently visited during the main story of MTG (Zendikar, Innistrad, Kaladesh). Now, these are just bits of marketing for D&D/MTG rather than tried and tested rulesets, and some of them contain a few omissions (such as not noting that Aetherborn do not need to breath) or questionable design choices. Having said that, I am unsure how balanced they are ruleswise, as I have not played 5th ed and do not know the rules. However, regardless of what they are and how they have been implemented, these rules have put me in the mood, yet again, for an MTG roleplaying game. As someone who has only really played Pathfinder as a fantasy pen-and-paper system, my idea would simply be to use those rules and, if the players are all Planeswalkers, give them all a Planeshift spell with either a longer casting time or a per-day restriction. However, ultimately I would prefer to run it as a freeform game. There are of course problems with this too, in that it can tend to be a bit directionless and conflict between players is harder to sort out, but it also means that it is easier to run and requires no knowledge of anything other than the setting (and not even that, arguably, if you are a new Planeswalker). As for the setting and characters, I would prefer to do something fairly current in terms of the timeline for MTG, though that would be more of a background than an excuse to interfere with the official plotline. Think Dack Fayden, in that he is around whenever the plot is going on but does not interact with the main heroes of the block. I would prefer Planeswalkers, as I feel that the main draw of RPing in the MTG universe rather than a specific setting is the ability to have the characters experience the multitude of worlds and to show cultures and ideologies clashing. I have a few characters that would be in mind for this - A BW human cleric/necromancer (in the original sense of speaking to spirits rather than zombie-summoning) from Innistrad who was designed because I hate Lilianna's presence as Token Evil Teammate on the Gatewatch, and a RW kor stoneforger, because I love the idea of stoneforging and there is a wonderful sense of adventuring on Zendikar. But, as I play MTG based on casual theme decks rather than competitively, I could pick practically any of the decks I have on Cockatrice (numbering over 150 by now, easily...) and create a semi-coherent and hopefully interesting character from them. If you were to take part in an MTG Roleplaying game, how would you prefer it to be run? Is there a system you would have in mind to formalise the rules, or would you prefer to do it entirely in roleplaying form with no dice and few hard rules ('few' as some, like the Colour of your characters, should of course be adhered to)? What would you want to do as a plot, at least to begin with? Would you prefer Planeswalker characters exploring the Multiverse, or non-Planeswalkers on a single world? What would your perfect character (or characters) be? Please be aware though, this is not necessarily indicative that I would like to start and GM an MTG RP/RPG. This is at the moment a few questions, just to see what people think.
  22. Often online, we're completely different. And since most of us will never meet in real life, I ask this. What are you like in real life? I have two mood sets that vary randomly. The first one is usually when I'm tired or I have stuff to do. I'll be more methodical, quieter, and thoughtful. I'm much more introverted and don't interact much. The second occurs less often. I'll just be happier. I'll have a swing in my step, I laugh and smile more, and just generally feel good. I'm much brasher and much more extroverted. I guess you could say my mood Waxes and Waynes So, what are you like? Response appreciated.
  23. I thought it might be useful to have a topic to discuss/speculate on some of the questions that are left unanswered at the end of White Sand. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are the following: Elodin's betrayal - there's definitely something sinister going on there. I got the impression that he didn't want to do what he did, but was being forced to by some outside force. Autonomy maybe, given that he "saw the Sand Lord," although it seems against Autonomy's Intent to influence/control someone. Darkside magic - what can Scythe do and how is it related to sand mastery? I'm assuming that further books in the series will delve into how Taldain's magic system works on darkside. The A'Kar - how come he has become so active and powerful recently? Tidbits about sand mastery - why does mastered sand and sand that touches water turn black? How does slatrification work?
  24. I think I am not the only one that still has questions open after the end of Calamity. Some of them are obvious ones created by the ending like "what kind of didgerido was Calamity actually" "How did obliteration get rid of his darkness, when his mentality is a perfect example for Calamity's twisted view on humanity" or "How exactly have things worked out in parallel universes" and some worldbuilding that's following the tip of the iceberg principle ala "What's the deal with the other Coven members and Night's Sorrow." However, I also am left with some questions that are more subtle and maybe anyone of you can help me find answers. Who actually killed Prof's class? Coming to the old theory that the Epic that killed his class was he himself. Apart from it just being something I'm curious about the answer to this question also would have worked wonderfully into Prof's struggle with failure. What happened in the first year after Calamity showed up? Not only have the effects of Dawnslight powers appeared effectively around the same time as Calamity in Steelheart Prof also claimed he has been an Epic "since Calamity" not since the beginning or anything like that but since Calamity, which would have been a year before Epics are supposed to show up. The first got ignored and the second arguably retocned. Why did Calamity interact with Regalia? Not only is it a break of his no involvement rule, for which he already has the Larcener persona, but he also effectively came at her beg and call to upgrade and create Epics for her, which goes entirely against his motives as displaed in Calamity. I also have a hard time buying him not knowing about Regalia's plan, so the question becomes what his endgame was for that. How are the Epics powers actually determined? We know that Calamity can alter them after he gave the Epics powers, so they can't be set in stone, so did Calamity just sit down for every Epic and decide to give them some random package of powers or is there some kind of guideline he has to follow? How inert are weaknesses actually to the powers? The way they are explained and Conflux reporting of them growing weaker seems like they come purely from Calamity, yet Tavi and Megan post claiming her powers still have weaknesses. Are they internal to the powers but Calamity just ramped them up somehow? Are they connected to fear by nature or are they random and it's Calamity's fault that all of them ended up being connecting to fears?
  25. I guess I have been on here long enough to start of of these now. So ask me anything.
