  1. Quick question. Can I post a question to the Cosmere Q&A that are related to a specific series? i.e, can I post a question that only relates to Mistborn on the Cosmere Q&A? If not, what do you think about putting a separate Q&A for each series on its discussion board?
  2. Okay, first off, this thread will make a lot more sense if you read my theory that it's based off. However, I will provide a basic explanation here. My theory is that Hoid was the mastermind behind the Shattering. We also know that he was offered a Shard, and refused it. Now, here's the question. If he decided to shatter Adonalsium but refused a Shard, there are only a few possibilities as to his motives. This would say that it wasn't for power unless he had a change of heart between the Shattering and the time he was offered a Shard. So, what was his motive? Could Adonalsium have seemed threatening to him in a way we don't understand? What do you guys think?
  3. How long has the Weeping lasted? If I remember correctly the Everstorm/Highstorm was close to the middle of the weeping; which is when a Highstorm would have been if it wasn't a light year. I assume from Shallan's realization that that they are now overdue, so it has been more than 2 weeks (4 weeks total for the Weeping). This might be because of the extra Highstorm the Stormfather created, but I'm wondering how the extra storm has altered the normal weather patterns.
  4. From WoK Epilogue: Kholinar on the map: Interesting, no? Why did Taln come back from Braize near the largest city in the area, or near Kholinar, and why was he wet? We have no mention of being wet when Jasnah elsecalls, no? Could he be have swum in through a shardpool or something? Tell me, yah?
  5. There was a post on r/Cosmere recently by Pillar_of_S4lt. You can find it here. Essentially, they were asking about this death rattle from WoK. My question is a little different from theirs. From what I understand, the general consensus is that the last part of that death rattle is referring to Odium. But why? Why does he have that name? "Broken" gives the impression that he is shattered, but he is unshattered, and has invested far less into a world than most other shards. Is it his going around killing other shards that makes him "broken"? I doubt this because he is simply following his intent, like the other shards are. Has he gone mad, and that is why he is broken? I doubt this, since he seems to be executing a (so far) successful plot to shatter the other Rosharian shards. (I guess one could still be "mad" and intelligent and cunning.) Is this perhaps not a reference to Odium, but to the holder, Rayse? Could Rayse have been broken in some way before taking up the shard? Is that part of why Hoid wrote what he did about him in the letter? I would love to get some input from the Sanderson Savants as to how he fits this description. As for the post by Pillar_of_S4lt, I do think the wording of this death rattle is interesting. it gives the impression that there was some event that happened that separated the first half from the second half. I think the most likely explanation is that the "event" is Odium gaining dominance in Roshar. I believe this is a future event, since Cultivation is still unshattered, which would make this death rattle a prophecy like many of the others. Perhaps that is how book 5 ends, with Odium shattering Cultivation, and the desolation being successful. Books 6-10 would be humanity trying to clean up the mess and win the day. However, what if the arrival of Odium was the "event"? We know that Cultivation and Honor arrived at Roshar long before Odium did. What if there was a third shard who went with them, and together the 3 of them "ruled". This begs the question, where is that shard now? Maybe it up and left when Odium arrived, out of fear. Perhaps it left little bits of investiture on Roshar, such as the fish of the purelake (I haven't seen anything yet to explain how the fish work, and whether or not they are a manifestation of either Honor or Cultivation. If there is a WoB out there I haven't found yet, someone please let me know). I don't have the exact words with me, but in Arcanum Unbounded, Khriss alludes to the idea that there may be more going on in Roshar than meets the eye, some deeper system of magic. Do we know what that is? Could that be a third shard at work, or the leftover bits of one that left? Overall, I find the theory of a third original shard on Roshar to be a bit of a stretch, but I haven't found anything that outright disproves it. Thoughts, anyone?
  6. Hi, I was wondering, would a hemalurgic spike put though someone's arm that had been cut higher up with a shardblade still grant powers? I'm currently thinking shardblades sever the limb spiritually, which also shuts down the nerves but doesn't kill the flesh. But i think the allomantic/feruchemic abilities are passed on via the spirit realm. I'm just not sure if it wouldn't work though. Building on that, if you strap a metalmind to a dead arm could you still tap it? And finally, if you have a large amount of metal piercing a dead arm could Harmony or Ruin still whisper to you? I may have answered my own question but I'm eager to see if you guys agree or disagree
  7. I was reading The Way of Kings and I am a little bit confused about one thing. In Chapter 52, Renarin mentions the Old Magic to Dalinar after one of Dalinar's visions, and then, "The empty place in his memories where [Dalinar's] wife had once existed had never seemed as obvious to him as it did at that moment." When I read that, I guessed that Dalinar had forgotten his wife as a result of a curse from the Old Magic. Later on (I can't find the source material), Dalinar becomes a little more explicit with relating the loss of memories of his wife to the Old Magic, saying that he did consult the Old Magic, but will not reveal his curse. I am wondering two things. First, am I correct in my guess about whether this is his curse or not? (I have just finished The Way of Kings, so this is the only spoiler I am okay with for material from later books.) Second, if I am correct, did Sanderson intend this to be heavy-handed foreshadowing, or is he trusting in the intelligence of his readers to understand this about Dalinar without being explicitly told? Also, I am relatively new to using forums, so I would appreciate any advice related to structuring my posts.
  8. So I am going to describe a specific character from a Sanderson series, and I want you to tell me who it is! Simple! First off, this character is a main character in a trilogy of books who is somewhat of a protagonist and an antagonist. At the start of the trilogy, he is an important member of a discreet rebellion against a tyrannical regime. The character is a gruff, hardened, middle-aged man who possesses superhuman abilities. Those abilities remain unknown until the end of the first book in the trilogy, where he is revealed to have them in an epic, deus-ex-machina-kind of way (after the readers assume he is dead.) This character struggles with control of himself and his identity in the second book in the trilogy, because an evil outside force is trying to take control of him. At the end of that second book, the evil force takes control of him and he becomes a villain character. In the third book, he is one of the main antagonists, though he appears somewhat infrequently. At the end of that third book, he is loosed from the evil control that has warped his mind and actions and performs an act of self-redemption. By the time the trilogy is over, he is still alive and his fate remains unknown. He kills many people throughout the trilogy of books. He is known for dressing in black (for the most part). He plays somewhat of a mentor role to the primary main character of the series in some way or another. He also has a cool nickname that is a compound word. So the big question is...... am I talking about Prof from the Reckoners series or Marsh from the Mistborn series? Hee hee hee hee hee...
  9. Hey everybody, I know this stuff is probably easy to find and I am not trying to use you guys as my personal Wiki, but I was wondering if anybody can help me out. It has been a while since I read Warbreaker and I am unable to search for stuff on line. So any help is appreciated. So endowment lets individuals return, generally to fulfill specific purposes, correct? The returned do not know what their "mission" is until its pretty much time to complete it, correct? Vasher has not fulfilled his yet? Working on a theory and I was trying to think of the answers but couldnt recall any hard info about this stuff.
  10. Hey everyone! I need your help to figure out some things about Inquisitors. I've come up against a bit of a wall trying to decide how to represent a few key things, namely: What exactly do the spikes look like? And what clothes do inquisitors wear? To break this down further, I have a few questions about the spikes. As traditionally depicted, the spikes are so thick that when trying to fit them into the eye socket, most of the surrounding flesh would basically have to be destroyed, which seems like it would wreck havoc on the structure of the face. This made me think that maybe the spikes are thinner than we normally think of them. It would certainly make it easier to drive them through the body quickly and keep freedom of movement. That brings me into the next thing: Do the spikes come in varying shapes? If all the spikes are the same length (and we know that the eye spikes span the length of the head and then some as they stick out the back) then spikes in the arms would stick out so far that the bearer might easily impale himself again. Some spikes might also rub against each other inside the body if they are too long (assuming they are placed symmetrically). Lastly, is the type of metal each spike is made out of apparent? Does a pewter spike look different than a bronze spike? Is the Allomantic symbol stamped onto the front? Are these spikes purely utilitarian or are they more like ceremonial objects, carefully crafted? Do the inquisitors polish their spikes? There are a lot of details that don't come up in bare bones descriptions that I feel should be taken into consideration. Next is clothing. I've seen depictions of inquisitors wearing concealing robes and revealing clothes. It seems like no one knew about any spikes besides the eye spikes outside of the inquisitors themselves, so canonically they probably covered up. But design wise showing the spikes and the musculature would be much more imposing. Moreover, what style of clothing do they wear? They were fighters but also figures in a religious institution so both elements should come to bear. This is the base mesh as it stands right now. I don't know how much of the upper body will be shown so I've basically modeled all of it. Spike placements were taken from Ben McSweeney's (Inkthinker) illustration. This is what I mean with the spike thickness thing. I've seen illustrations that show the eyelids stretched around it, but that might look strange in 3D. And here's a quick moc up of some clothes I made. It looks more jedi ish than I'd like. Quick note/edit: I'm not just looking for textual evidence. WoB, or even straight up speculation or just cool ideas would be awesome. Oh also, feedback on the model in general is appreciated too. Update: Alright It's been a little while and I haven't had too much time to work on it, but here's something I threw together for fun just to get an idea of what the finished product will be like. The detailed sculpt is underway, and this is a quick test render with some textures and added color thrown in. The eye tattoos are pretty bad, so that tells me I need to figure out a better look for those.
  11. Something I've been wondering for a while is what we should refer to ourselves as. Are we Sharders? Shardlings? People who have nothing better than to dedicate an unnecessary amount of time to interconnected book series? What do we view ourselves as? Probably Sticks
  12. I am having trouble understanding the rules regarding autonomous body parts. For example, "my eyes floated above the treetops as we passed," is obviously bad writing. Of course your eyes didn't pop out of your head and float above the trees. Sometimes these issues are not quite as obvious. For example, "I put my hand on her knee." Some might argue that the narrator picked up his severed hand, placed it on a person's knee, and just walked away. Of course, "I reached out and touched her knee," works better, but I've seen this done both ways.
  13. I'm still rather unclear as to how Aluminum Feruchemy works individually. I understand how it worked in BoM, but am not sure how an aluminum Ferring would work. Any clarification would be lovely. Thank you.
  14. I'll be attending the Lansing signing, hopefully recording the signing, though the employees of the store have not been very friendly so far. I'm super excited. Anyways, here's the questions I've currently got lined up. They're questions I asked on his AMA that didn't get answered, as well as some about SoS. I'll be asking them in no particular order. Let me know if I shouldn't ask any of these questions... Obviously I don't think I'll get to ask all of these, but the store did say I could go through the line more than once, so yeah. If it wasn't clear, this is the thread I'll post the after-signing report stuff into.
  15. After doing a search through Kings and Radiance for "Gemheart" and "Greatshell" and concluded the texts supports all Great shells having gem hearts but does not state a chull as a greatshell. Any WoB stating that chulls have gemhearts?
  16. So, I was just at the Orem B&N signing, and I asked Brandon if burning copper or wearing an aluminum hat would affect subliminal messaging. His answer? (Paraphrased) "It would only affect it if it were through Cosmere-based means, and even then it would be of dubious effectiveness." Thoughts?
  17. Is it allowed, if you mention it's non canon? Specifically, I'm thinking of this. Source
  18. I'm working on a new theory, but there's a needed reference that eludes me. I could swear that I read an interview, Q&A, AMA or signing report with Brandon in which he stated that the First Ideal of the Knights Radiant ("Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination") constituted the major theme of the Stormlight Archive series. However, for the life of me I can't find this anywhere. Am I crazy? Does anyone else remember Brandon making such a statement? Can anyone help me find the reference I'm seeking?
  19. It has been about a month and a half since the most recent Shardhunt unlockable (the Emperor's Soul prologue) was released. Brandon's site says there are still 15 codes left until the final item is unlocked. He has one event in about a week, and then none after that until July, so I'm kind of concerned about the Shardhunt. This is really mostly aimed at Peter, but does anyone know if the fact that not everything has been released yet is due to Brandon not having given out enough codes yet or if they are all out and there are people who simply haven't uploaded them (which really annoys me if so). I just need my Sanderson fix! And don't want to wait until the summer for more.
  20. I'm no expert on this, but as I was reading Words of Radiance, I noticed that it was common for people to have one light-eye and one dark-eye, as well as streaks of mixed hair colors. For a human on Earth, this would be very rare, and only plausible in the case of a mutation. Are people on Roshar different than people on Earth, and if so, will we see greater effects of it besides hair and eye color?
  21. Quick question. As I am going through the pages for Perfect State, do you want me marking them complete myself for you admins to double-check, or leave them as stubs and request they be marked complete? It'll be odd creating all those talk pages just to say "hey, mark this complete, the novella barely mentions this." But if that's the system we want to use I'm all for it. I just don't want to annoy anyone. It occured to me I can also ask for completion in the italicized tags next to the update on the Recent Changes page, but I'm not sure how much people pay attention to those? I'll refrain from completing any pages until I get an answer. Thanks.
  22. In Words of Radiance how does Dalinar Kholin bind himself to an Honorblade of Talenel. Also since it is an honor blade how can it be summoned in 10 heartbeats as it has nothing to do with spren. Also when dalinar uses it against Szeth at the end why doesnt it give him powers like szeth has from using honor blade. Is this an error or inconsistency?
  23. How can shallan talk while in disguise without her light leaking? How can she maintain her disguise? (Sorry about my english if there are any mistakes...)
  24. I know that I associate colors with certain numbers. While I do think of multi-digit numbers as having colors, the basis for all of it is firmly established in the colors for the ten digits. I have asked a lot of people whether they do the same. So far, I have only met one or two people who do this as strongly as I do. However, I want to see what all of you will say. I will present the colors that I associate with numbers below in white text, but I want you to make up your mind first about what colors you think the numbers are before you look at mine, maybe even write them down. My colors are below: 0 - clear/black 1 - white 2 - blue 3 - yellowish green 4 - red 5 - orange 6 - dark teal 7 - dark brown 8 - very dark purple, almost black 9 - black If you don't understand what I'm talking about, Wikipedia has a good article on it here. This Numberphile video (and this one) does a nicer, less scientific job of explaining the experience of synesthesia. I have also heard of people assigning personalities and genders to numbers, so comment away!
  25. I'm curious to find out what others think about this... Question: How is it possible that Syl helped men kill before? From Pattern, we now know that almost no spren survived the Recreance: Hypothesis: 1. Syl is a pre-recreance spren who survived. 2. Syl remembers helping men kill before as part of a collective spren memory. 3. Syl has begun the bonding process with other potential surgebinders, but either they've abandoned her before reaching the shardblade stage, or they've died. Discussion: 1. Syl is a pre-recreance spren who survived. I've got very little for or against this one. We know she is the only (or at least the first) Honorspren to disobey the Stormfather, that she refers to the Stormfather as her father, and that the Stormfather is very protective of her, calling her "My beloved one." But I don't feel like any of that background is particularly relevant. Supporting arguments: This WoB: So how long ago was the Recreance? Maybe this is an open and shut case, just based on that quote? Counter argument: Syl's age could be independent of her consciousness (as in unborn Spren, forces, that cannot truly be created or destroyed), or she could have spent thousands of years in the cognitive realm. 2. Syl remembers helping men kill before as part of a collective spren memory. Supporting Argument: Syl has already said that all spren are basically the same. Counter Arguments: Syl herself notices that she is different than the windspren. Perhaps her statement regarding unity only applies to non-Bonding spren? Of the Bonding spren we've seen, we've mostly seen individual spren, the only other counter I can think of is Wyndle (Lift's spren) since he has referred to the Circle. Wyndle's wish was to bond with some nice old gardener, but his opinion was countered which indicates individuality. This argument depends on the Circle being other growth/vine/garden/same-as-Wyndle-spren. If all spren share a collective memory, then Pattern should have memories of what happened pre-Recreance? Speculatively, when there were many spren, you'd assume that they would have individual experiences with their bonded surgebinders... 3. Syl has begun the bonding process with other potential surgebinders, but either they've abandoned her before reaching the shardblade stage, or they've died. I don't really have anything of substance for or against this, except the previous WoB that she's been around for thousands of years, which has the same counters as previously mentioned in 1. Can a spren only bond with one person? Can they begin bonding with one person, then begin a new bond with someone else if it doesn't pan out? What if Kaladin died before regaining his bond with Syl, could someone else have revived her? I have nothing on this. I do think it could be possible that if a Surgebinder is killed, that their Spren would survive. Purely speculation though. This might actually be a pretty good question for Brandon. Conclusion: Nothing conclusive! But I'm going to go with 3. I think she's either a survivor of a dead radiant, or an incomplete failed prior bond. These are my thoughts. Do you have a favourite answer, or another idea! Shoot me down, I dare you... (Edit: Conclusion based on thread input) Conclusion: The general consensus is that Syl is a Pre-Recreance spren. Her radiant died (we don't know if this is through battle or just old age, especially since we don't know the effects of the Nahel bond on lifespan) and Syl returned to Shadesmar to wait for another bond. The Recreance occurred and she was forbidden from bonding again. She came back through from Shadesmar to bond with Kaladin against the Stormfather's wishes and lost her memories. Thanks for everyone's input! There are a few new questions that came from this that deserve their own threads, and that I might pursue unless they already exist. For example, I really like Pathfinder's question about spren transitions.
