  1. Sanderson Elimination: Questions and Answers and Game Meta Discussion Here, as the name implies, is where to come to get all your questions answered and discuss different aspects of the game. If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to ask. If you want to discuss the virtues of certain playstyles, have at it. Topics range from the games, the metagame, the schedule, when sign ups will be, game theory, signing up to GM a game, and anything in between. If you have questions or concerns, let us and the rest of the community help! This thread is open for anyone and everyone to help provide you with answers. A few disclaimers: As usual, there is to be no discussing of currently running games. If you have a question about something occurring in a game that has not finished, please ask your GM or the Impartial Moderator for clarification. Feel free to debate and discuss topics and questions as you see fit. Just keep in mind that the Etiquette Policy is in effect even here. Treat others and their opinions with respect. If you are unsure if your question has already been asked, then ask anyway! If it has, someone will be able to link you to the relevant discussion/answer. If it hasn’t, then we’ll do our best to answer it. There is no such thing as a stupid question in this case. Even if your question has been asked before, new information may have come to light since the first time it was asked. As this thread used to be the Original General Rules thread, if you’re looking for the true start of the Q&A, that is right here.
  2. I will be there tomorrow, Friday 10/07! Bringing my copy of Warbreaker with me. Going to Dragonsteel first thing to get my ticket for signing. If I get to meet him, WHAT SHOULD I ASK? I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY except incoherent crying sounds right now! (Bad advice welcome. ) Lastly, if you're going and attending on Saturday, ATTEND THE Q&A and tell us what happens because it's going to be crazzzzy!
  3. We need to talk about the silver plating on Vin's earring! Somewhere between the moment Vin's mother drove this little bronze spike through Vin's sister into Vin's ear, and the moment we first see Vin in Book 1, this bronze earring became plated in "silver" (which must negate its Hemalurgic effects for reasons I'll explain) and then locked away inside of a box. Even ignoring the larger implications of Silver throughout the Cosmere, and isolating our attention only at Scadrial's magic system... We know that silver on Scadrial has no known Allomantic, Feruchemical, or (most importantly) Hemalurgic properties at all. If the earring were silver-plated before spiking through Vin's sister, then that silver would have nullified the spike's ability to behave as a hemalurgic spike and accept a hemalurgic charge. In contrast, if the earring was silver-plated after receiving a hemalurgic charge, then the silver would have blocked the earring's effects on the wearer (much like Nightblood's sheath blocks his power). If this bronze earring was plated in silver, then it's logical to infer that even if Vin wore it like that (fully silver-plated), then Ruin wouldn't have been able to reach her, nor would she have been able to tap into the extra seeker properties with which the spike was charged. Interestingly enough, that silver plating was notably wearing away throughout Vin's story. From Well of Ascension - Chapter 33: "Vin stood quietly. Absently, she pulled out her bronze earring—her mother’s earring—and worked it between her fingers, watching it reflect light. It had once been gilded with silver, but that had worn off in most places." From Hero of Ages – Chapter 54: "Silver. Useless, unburnable silver. Like lead, it was one of the metals that provided no Allomantic powers at all. “An unpopular metal indeed . . .” Yomen said, nodding to the side. A servant approached Vin, bearing something on a small platter. Her mother’s earring. It was a dull thing, Allomantically, made of bronze with some silver plating. Much of the silver had worn off years ago, and the brownish bronze showed through, making the earring look to be the cheap bauble it was. “Which is why,” Yomen continued, “I am so curious as to why you would bother with an ornament such as this. I have had it tested. Silver on the outside, bronze on the inside. Why those metals?" I figure that neither Reen nor Vin could've done this silver-plating to the bronze earring. They wouldn't have been concerned in the least with having it silver-plated while they were poor and had a hard enough time staying [relatively] safe and fed. I think someone who was cosmere-aware or, at the very least, was "Ruin-aware" was responsible for having the earring silver plated. I doubt Hoid would have done this, as well. My imagination says that he would have sooner destroyed or stolen the earring if he really wanted to interfere with Ruin's plans. Hoid wouldn't have preserved the earring so carefully. The fact that the earring was neutralized/silver-plated rather than destroyed... and the fact that it was placed in a box and that box was kept rather than disposed of... well, I would guess Preservation was behind this silver-plating. I think he did what he could to influence people and events around Vin to protect her while keeping in line with his own will to 'preserve' above all else. From Hero of Ages – Sazed's final Epigraph (just before the epilogue): "Vin was special. Preservation chose her from a very young age, as I have mentioned. I believe that he was grooming her to take his power... I believe that she must have drawn some of the mist into her when she was still a child, in those brief times when she wasn’t wearing the earring. Preservation had mostly gotten her to stop wearing it by the time Kelsier recruited her, though she put it back in for a moment before joining the crew. Then, she’d left it there at his suggestion." If the earring had been placed while Vin was an infant and left in her ear, then it's a safe assumption that Ruin would have had her entire lifetime to work his influence... if, of course, it hadn't been for the presumed efforts of Preservation to buy her as much time as he could. I asked Brandon Sanderson "Who was responsible for getting Vin's bronze earring plated in 'silver'?" and apparently that question was good enough to award me an RAFO card. :-) I will be framing it. Don't judge me. Who plated Vin's bronze earring in "silver"? When did they do it? Why? Is the plating on Vin's earring really silver (or just perceived to be Silver by the Scadrians)? ...is it the same metal as Nightblood's sheath? It seems to me that the silver plating on Vin's earring and Nightblood's famous "silver sheath" were essentially there to perform the same job. What do you think?
  4. Quick question. Can I post a question to the Cosmere Q&A that are related to a specific series? i.e, can I post a question that only relates to Mistborn on the Cosmere Q&A? If not, what do you think about putting a separate Q&A for each series on its discussion board?
  5. A little thought experiment 1. If a person were to store their complete Identity in a metalmind and lose it, what would be the Spiritual and Cognitive ramifications? 2. Could a person build a totally new Identity? 3. If a person were to build a new Identity and then tap their metalmind, what would ensue in both the Cognitive and Spiritual realms?
  6. Hey guys, I was at the Nottingham UK signing on August 6th, and thought I would just let you know what went on there. Brandon did two readings, the first was the Shadows of Self extract that is available on his site. The way he did Wayne's voice was hilarious, and I don't think I'll ever be able to read him the way I used to ever again. The second was the new Jasnah extract in full that he's been throwing around recently. I took recordings of both of these, exited in particular to share the Jasnah one, only to find that Tor had beat me to the punch, and posted it on their website, but if anyone still wants to hear it I will add it to this post. The recording is on my phone and I'm working off an iPad at the moment because my computer is broken, so I'm still trying to figure out a way to upload it to soundcloud. Both recordings I took are good quality because Brandon was projecting instead of using a mic, and was stood practically next to me. I foolishly forgot to record the actual Q&A - I blame it on being too star struck to understand the finer motor controls of using fingers, but I will post what I remember here as I remember it. Brandon introduced a new law of magic. This is word for word what he said; the Zeroth Law - always err on the side of awesome I embarrassed myself by asking if there were any flying creatures other than skyeels, to which Brandon replied that there was a type of cremling that could fly but he couldn't remember the name of it at the time. He said that the further west you went the more flying creatures you would find, but with Highstorms being what they are nothing really wants to be flying around in one. Except for a certain Windrunner. I could have misunderstood, but at one point he said that the book he was releasing after Firefight (sequel to Steelheart) was Shadows of Self (sequel to Alloy of Law), but I thought he was doing the next Stormlight book after that, so could someone maybe clarify this. There were a lot of questions asked about writing. One of which was how important is constructing a good magic system to the story? Brandon answered something like if you had an excellent magic system but poor characters you would get a terrible story, but if you write great characters with a terrible magic system it could still be an excellent story. One question that stood out was someone asked whether the third Mistborn trilogy would be like the Cosmere version of the Avengers, which Brandon answered that he hadn't heard it described like that before. He said it would be similar, but not with the heroes from his current books as it would be set in the future. He stated that their books are their stories, and are not building up to some big crossover. Rather it could be considered that it would be like the Avengers in terms of different magic systems being seen together. I hope that made sense. Someone asked a follow up question to this, which was: When writing his magic systems, did he try and balance them all? Brandon answered that no he didn't because he thought of it like in real life some people are more skilled than others at certain things, and so some magic systems may appear more powerful than others, or some are more useful at doing certain things, but it is showing how they overcome their inabilities and weaknesses that he finds interesting. When he was signing I decided to ask about whether Shardplate came from the radiant's spirit web which I got a RAFO for understandably (I kind of wanted a card). I forgot to check here for some better questions before the signing, so sorry about that guys. I tried to stick around and see if I could hear other people's questions, but how the room was set up made this kind of difficult so I abandoned trying. The other questions that I remember have been asked and answered (or in some cases not answered) before, but if anything else manages to surface through my fanboy haze of the event I'll add it to this post. All in all I really enjoyed my first Brandon event. I got hardbacks of the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance signed, apparently I could have brought more books and he would have still signed them all, so I've learned that for next time
  7. Starting a thread for any new WoBs from the Salt Lake Fan-Experience this weekend. If anything stood out to you, whether it was your own question or one you heard, feel free to post it here. I'll start it off with one of my own. There you go. If you're add anything, make sure to include the phrasing of both the question and the answer as accurately as you can. Thanks!
  8. Are we aware of the Q&A that Tor.com is doing for the end of their Way of Kings reread? Apparently, during the Epilogue commentary next week, we are allowed to ask questions in the comments, and Brandon will answer ten of them. So, does anyone here know of the event? Have you thought of any questions? I know what I am going to ask: Alternatively:
  9. Anyone go and have their questions answered?
  10. So, I was just wondering, does anyone know if/when the next Q&A with Brandon Sanderson on these 17th Shard forums will be? I know there was the one a while ago, but I have more questions and I'm not really in a place he comes to... I personally was hoping there'd be one during the WoR tour for us, but I guess not... So, has anyone heard anything?
  11. Hey guys! I'm at Jordancon this weekend. I will have the opportunity to ask Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss some questions. I have so far: Odium shattered Devotion and Dominion because they could oppose him. Did they have some special ability to do so or are any 2 shard on the same planet a danger to him? If a Listener bonded an Honorspren would they get the same powers as a human? And if a Human bonded a stormspren would they have the same powers/consequences that the Listeners do? (Shamlessly stolen from a thread in the WoR discussion board) What would be the real world carat value of a chip and a broam? WoT spoiler Lightsong notices that there is always enough room in the Palace for the Returned. Is there a cap on how many Returned may be alive at once or would they just build the Palace larger? That's all i have any suggestions please post them for me PS if this is in the rong area please relocate it for me Thanks Admins!!
  12. I wanted to compile all the WoB from his signing Q&A's. Please feel free to add your signing questions to this thread or link to your thread and I'll try to keep this top post updated. I edited out non-WoR text to try and keep the length down, but I linked the original thread for those who want the full session. Also minor edits for spelling. 13. Shouldn't we start a question list to help people decide what to ask BS when they get their signed copy? (never been to a signing, I don't live in the USA if I make wrong assumption correct me, thanks)
  14. Brandon apparently had signings and Q&A's and whatnot, but I can't find even the smallest tidbit of information from any of it. Was all information sucked into a black hole shortly after the convention, or is it just the sad case that no one on any fan websites or youtube posted anything?
