  1. I've been trying to get healthier and more fit recently, and have done some research on muscle building. One thing that stuck out to me was the fact that you can deliberately train for more raw strength but without bulking up significantly, creating a "sleeper build" of sorts. Basically, I'm thinking that if a Brute were to build up more muscle density, they could benefit more from it when Tapping as their muscles would put on less overall bulk, but get a comparable amount of strength. Thoughts?
  2. I just realized, Wax finds it a little easier to move around and support his own weight when Storing via iron, right? Since you can realistically only Store a certain amount of strength via Pewtermind at any give time (WoB), Storing weight simultaneously would mean you can Store more of your strength at any given time. Both Hemalurgists of the right type and Full Feruchemists could make good use of this synergy to get more strength for later.
  3. For a long time, I've wondered just how much faster does Allomantic pewter actually make you. It would certainly be useful for determining just how much you could siphon off as an A-pewter/F-steel Twinborn for extra speed. Okay, so we from when Breeze rode away from Cett's army in WoA that it was mentioned that Vin could keep up with his galloping horse. I feel that this is the best example we have right now to figure out Allomantic pewter's enhancement to speed. A thoroughbred horse can run between 38 to 44 mph, though that is without a rider. With a rider, it drops from 38 to 32 mph, and Breeze isn't exactly a light man. Plus, his horse was already exhausted if I recall correctly, so I'll ere on the slow side for the horse's speed and say it was probably running around 32 to 30 mph. Vin mentions that she doesn't exactly love running in TFE during her extended Pewterdrag with Kelsier; she's not a couch potato, but she isn't going to be running any marathons without a boost from pewter as she hasn't honed her ability to do so. That said, she's also a bit stronger than other Allomancers in terms of raw power (Ham mentions this during their sparring in WoA and Kel when her tin lets her see light sooner in the cave hideout in TFE), so this very well may compensate for her lack of natural athleticism. As such, I think I'll just say she's going to get the average speed for an athlete to cover this discrepancy. I was going to factor in Vin's 5' height, but there are many conflicting sources that say it does and doesn't (here's a few of them; link, link, and link). As such, I think I'll omit this from Vin's total running speed. What's more, it seems that Vin is sprinting in the scene with the galloping horse instead of jogging (as would be seen in a longer marathon-like run). Okay, with these in mind, Vin's sprinting speed without her pewter is probably going to be around 17 mph. Her enhanced speed lets her move closer to 30 mph when sprinting. Soooo, this means that standard Allomantic pewter's speed may grant you around double your normal speed, at least when Flaring. Despite this number having a LOT of variables I had to fudge, I think this is at least somewhat accurate. If anyone has other ideas on calculating this speed (or would like to point out any mistakes I made with this), I'd would love to hear it though
  4. I know that Allomantic pewter enhances durability as well as strength, but what about Feruchemical pewter? Do the bones get thicker and denser to help compensate for the added muscle mass, but also help cushion from falling or getting punched? For example, if a Brute Tapped the strength of ten men, could he take a punch to the stomach without flinching, or get a two-by-four slammed into his side without breaking bones? As another side note not worthy of its own post, what about height? I always imagined that a person's skeletal structure was a limiting factor to how much strength could be tapped, so a tall person could Tap more before it bulked them up to the point that moving proved impossible. But if the skeletal structure can be altered by F-pewter, would that mean that Tapping it in excess would make you taller? Would your hands and feet get bigger and beefier? Just some musings I had.
  5. I found this quote last night and it changed the way I look at Allomantic pewter; (I removed the mild Warbreaker and SA spoilers inside) So, this means that a Pewterarm can control more about what their Allomancy does? I always thought of A-pewter being a more passive metal, where you could train to use the effects, but you couldn't control it as you do steel and iron. This also would explain some of the fundamental differences between the Blessing of Potency and Allomantic pewter; Potency really is just a static boost to your Spiritual Aspect's natural physical abilities, but because of that it's narrower in its scope. Allomantic pewter has more potential, including some sort of mind-over-matter. What else do you think A-pewter could be used for?
  6. New to this forum, and I have a somewhat odd question I have no idea who/how/where to even ask. The live stream the other night had the 10 pewter doomslugs they were giving away, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the winners. The only instruction was to email "[email protected]", which I've done, with...no response. Curious if anyone here has won anything on a live stream, and if so, if there's just a few days before a response? I'm not trying to rush anything, I just really hope I haven't done something wrong.
  7. When someone burns Allomantic pewter, they get a handful of physical enhancements. The most notable of these being an increase in physical strength. Your strength is increased based on what your strength is without an enhancement; all your muscles are equally enhanced, so more muscle means more strength. But, wouldn’t you need more investiture, more energy, to enhance more total muscle mass? (By the way, this post is based on how I understand Allomantic pewter, and I could be wrong, so if I'm incorrect please don't hesitate to tell me.) Okay, let’s say there’s a Pewterarm who relies on their power too much and doesn’t work out. They can only bench press 100 lbs. without any enhancement, and they can bench press 200 lbs. while burning pewter without flaring. There’s another Pewterarm of equal Allomantic power who is a bodybuilder, and they can bench press 300 lbs. without any enhancement, and can then bench press 600 lbs. while burning pewter without flaring. Even though both Pewterarms are of equal Allomantic strength, one is clearly getting a far greater energy output from their Allomancy. So, what the heck is going on? Energy can’t just appear out of nowhere, so where is it coming from? Is a Pewterarm with bigger muscles simply more efficient than a Pewterarm with weaker muscles, similar to how Radiants who are of a higher oath are more investiture efficient than lower oath Radiants? Are the Pewterarms with bigger muscles somehow drawing in more investiture than other Pewterarms? I'm just a little confused as to how Pewterarms are doubling or tripling their strength seemingly without any extra investiture.
  8. When a Feruchemist taps their metalmind, I'm pretty sure that their weight doesn't change, even though their muscle mass does. When a Returned shrinks or grows, does their mass/weight stay the same?
  9. I don't know if this has been answered before but. We've never actively seen a feruchemist warrior nor have we seen what a terris army would look like. So my question is how could the powers of feruchemy best be used in training/battle scenarios? Also what is possible while storing. I always thought if a feruchemist soldier wanted to really train themselves to be effective they'd train their bodies to a certain point that they're confidently stronger and more fit than the common man. Then constantly store 10% of their attribute say lhysical strength. Then theyd go and train while storing. I'm using pewter as a placeholder since it's the easiest. But say a youre storing in pewter and then you start training physically while in that stored state. Does your base strength go up as you get used to training and working out in that state to the point where you're just as efficient in that state as your normal state? Because if that was the case then a feruchemical soldier would be extremely potent. Being in a constant storing state but having trained themselves to be just as effective as they are normally. Then when they need to win just tap a little bit of the attribute they need and they're instantly out of anyone's league that they're fighting. Anyways just a little thought that I had.
  10. So we know in addition to a radiant's stormlight, feruchemical gold (though perhaps only a compounder could get enough healing), and perhaps the surge of progression, but possibly not a non-progression honor blade, could restore a shard severed limb, but could pewter do this? Pewter seems to be pretty powerful for healing, but not nearly as powerful as feruchemical gold, but with duralumin, could it heal a shard-blade severed limb?
  11. Hello All I was wondering what would happen if let's say I was a twinborn from Pewter allomancy and gold feruchemey. Would I be able to burn Pewter to increase my strength and then use that strength to fill my gold metal minds? Pretty much cheating and using the health granted to me by pewter instead of my own health to fill my gold metal minds. Essentially gaining all the benefits that a gold compounder would get but better in some ways as I do not have to burn any gold doing this. Though filling my metal minds would take longer. Or is that not possible at all and I cannot draw on the power of pewter to fill my metal mind and doing this will just draw on my own power to fill the mind which means I'll still be weak physically while the minds are filling though maybe not as weak as usual since I'm burning pewter but overall my feruchemy is still net-zero and I won't be able to be immortal or fill extreme amounts of health using pewter. I've listened to graphic audiobooks for all Mistborn main series and side stories so don't worry about spoilers. Sorry if the formatting of tags and the title is off, I'm new here and plan to be active way more once I finish the rest of the cosmere stories (only Emperor's soul, white sand and Arcanum stories left). It's just this question was left on my mind.
  12. It's been a while but we are finally back on track with "Letters From the Cosmere!" Scadrial is a world with a dark past. Of all the known worlds, the people of this planet have come face to face with their local Shard wielders more than any other. As Ruin and Preservation battled over the fate of the planet, the people suffered until the end came. Now Elsric has published his essays about this world's Investiture and how these powers are connected to the Intents from which they came. Here Elsric describes the secrets of Pewter and Tin, the Internal Physical Metals. Transcript: Essay Number 2 The Secrets and Investitures of Pewter and Tin – The Internal Physical Metals My lifetimes of study and observation have lead me to a fascination about Shards, specifically the Intent of a Shard. This is one of many reasons why Scadrial is a major focus of my studies. It a system whose history and people have seen a great amount of direct interaction between Shard entities and the mortals who live on the planet. The fall of the World of Ash also taught us about the simplistic dynamic of shardic intent, and how the actions of the shard holders are guided along a track until they themselves are less of an individual and more a force of will. They become a hyper intelligent concept. In fact, the bonded spren of Roshar are approximate examples of what I feel a Shard Bearer becomes. It is a blending of the Cognitive and Spiritual essence into something far greater. The Intent of a shard can be extrapolated based on the shape their investitures take. These powers follow laws much like the laws that govern the physical universe. This essay is at the heart of my arguments in this matter. It is imperative that the reader understands that the purpose of these essays is to examine the internal nature of the powers found on Scadrial. Within these pages are my measurements and diagrams, but this is more a dialog intended to uphold my claims that investiture is patterned after intent. This is a fact that is highlighted in all the magic systems of the Cosmere. In this essay I will show how the Allomantic powers of Pewter and Tin are nearly perfect examples of this manifest intent. These powers are the personification of Preservation, which was the Intent that was carried by Leras until the Catasandra. Pewter is the Pushing Internal Physical Metal. It seems an apt description considering Pewter pushes the physical body to its peak and beyond. While burning the metal, the allomancer will experience and enhancement of all physical aspects of their body. The physical strength and speed are increased by magnitudes, although no muscle mass is actually added. The bones also are reinforced, becoming resilient to severe punishment. Once again, this extra strength does not come from an increase in bone mass or density. There is also an increase in the allomancers balance which compensates for the improved physical abilities, often resulting in a lithe almost cat-like grace that comes to a Pewter Arm. This heightened balance and increased speed means that at peak efficiency, a allomancer burning pewter can maintain a sprint at nearly the speed of a galloping horse. This means that a pewter runner can be clocked at over 60 kilometers an hour. Pewter is the fastest burning metal of the original 8 metals. It’s pure allomantic alloy is a casting of ninety-one percent tin and nine percent lead. A Pewuter Savant, or a pewter allomancer who has adapted to burning pewter over long periods of time, is hard to make and even harder to recognize. The benefits of long term Pewter flaring are often dwarfed by the physical dangers that come with doing so. A Pewter savant will consume Pewter more efficiently, and can start healing from wounds at an accelerated rate compared to other Pewter arms. However, this constant flaring drives a need for the metal, and if the allomancer ever runs out of metal to flair, they can die quite suddenly from the shock. This makes study of Pewter Savants difficult for most people are too wary to attempt and it would be unethical to perform tests on the unwilling. Of specific interest to me is the infamous Pewter drag. This is an instance where an allomancer consumes massive amounts of Pewter at a consistently high rate in order to maintain a prolonged and intense burn of the metal. This pushes the boundaries of what we know are the limits of Pewter. Allomancers have been known to run for days on one of these burns, moving at a break neck speed. The longer this allomantic burn goes, the underlying consequences grow steadily more severe. The body seems to understands on a primal level that pewter-dragging is unnatural. Many Mistings report an overwhelming fatigue and mental sluggishness that accompanies a pewter drag. When the drag is finished, the allomancer must continue to burn pewter for the next several hours. If not, the allomancer may slip into a coma which can be lethal. They also must maintain a high water volume and calorie intake so their bodies can continue to function. Pewter dragging is highly dangerous and should be overseen by other experienced allomancers in order to help train the mind for the incredible physical strain. My studies have led me to the conclusion that Pewter is the greatest example of Preservation’s Shardic Intent, and why I felt this should be the foundation for my claims. Experience and observation indicate that the Intents of the Shards direct the application of their endowed Investiture. In fact, I postulate that by studying the manifestations and laws that govern an observed Investiture, that you could determine from observation alone what the Shard’s core intent is. For example, I wish you to reflect upon the fundamentals of Pewter. Pewter brings incredible physical enhancements to the allomancer. This effect has a limit or cap, but these powers come with little to no consequence to the allomancer. Pewter isn’t necessarily making you stronger, but rather that strength is a consequence for what it is doing. I have observed that Pewter instead produces the effect of freezing an allomancer’s state of existence. While burning pewter, the physical body resists changes down to the microscopic level. The bones don’t get larger and tougher, they simple resist change making them harder to break. The body can sprint at speed for long periods of time because Pewter prevents the body from suffering the ill effects of motion and muscle degradation. The pewter is acting as a barrier, preserving the allomancer’s body by expelling the energy that would normally create these physical changes and dissipating it into the spiritual realm. This is speculation on my part, but the differences that we see in the physical Ferrochemical arts displays this discrepancy perfectly. As you will see in my future essays, alomancy uses investiture to effect the world around the alomancer, all the while preserving the allomancer. The other metallic arts require great physical sacrifice in order to obtain their power. Allomancies complete dependence on metals fits the observed intent of Preservation. Despite this drive for Preservation, any interaction with Investiture comes with risks as stated above. Just because a Pewter Allomancer resists changes, doesn’t mean that they are unharmed or changed from this process. In fact, quite the opposite. But it is apparent to me that the intent behind pewter’s power clearly follows the pattern of its shard. This can also be observed in Pewter’s metallic counterpart, Tin. Tin is the Internal Physical Pulling metal. This power creates a heightening in the allomancer’s perceptions of the physical world by pulling on the capabilities of the allomancer’s mind. This enhancement is unilateral, greatly increasing the sensitivity of all the senses all at once. Normally this information would be overwhelming and possibly damaging to the psyche. However, it is apparent that Tin’s abilities change the way the mind works, increasing its capabilities. I believe that this is actually the only true change that Tin proves. Reports indicate that a Tin eye, or a Tin misting, does not see anything that wasn’t already observable. Instead they become hyper aware of all the sensory input that their bodies are receiving and enhances the minds ability to interoperate the information. Tin also provides an ability to see through the mists of Scadrial. The Mists are a gaseous manifestation of Preservation/Harmonies power in the physical world, and thus Preservation’s Arcane abilities are granted an advantage in the Mists, most noticeably with the Tin eyes. This ability does come with many downsides. With such a sensitivity to stimuli, the allomancer is susceptible to any dramatic changes in sensory input. Unexpected loud noises or bright lights can stun and even incapacitate a Tin eye. Even with the mental enhancement, the mind can only handle so much data at once. Another cost is the enhancement of pain receptors which can also overwhelm a tin eye. In fact, the tin eye often avoids confrontation for this very reason for while burning tin they can be easily incapacitated. Tin Savants are some of the strangest invested entities in the Cosmere. The extended Tin flair causes the mind of the Allomancer to permanently change. With this enhancement, the mind becomes incredibly capable of filtering out unwanted sensations, allowing for… strange abilities. Before the Catasandra, the Lord Mistborn was a Tin-eye Misting who became the only documented Tin Savant on record. He was capable of seeing through cloth, could see stars on cloudy nights, and was even able to hear a man’s heartbeat from over thirty yards away. However, if the Savant ever runs out of Tin, his natural senses are dulled into almost nothing. This is a frightening medical condition that if left untreated runs a high risk of accidental death due to a lack of sensory data. In is my opinion that such Savants be discourage, although it must be admitted that the supernatural senses it creates fascinating and the effects of such abilities are powerful if executed properly. Tin also reflects Preservation’s intent. With the exception of the Savant, Tin does enhance an allomancer without altering the individual. Again we can see that Tin does not make the individual’s eyes better, or change the physical characteristics of the Tin-eye’s ears. Instead the changes are all about the capabilities of the mind and the ability to intemperate incoming data. This preserves the allomancer while also increasing the allomancer’s ability to survive. Savants challenge this assertion but I believe that the metaphysical changes observed in the Lord Mistborn’s life were caused by a fundamental law of investiture, rather than by the intent of Preservation. I have observed in my years of travel that those who channel large amounts of investiture for long periods of time are physically altered by the power. This is a study outside of my focus but such examples of metaphysical changes have been seen in the Soulcasters of Roshar, or the Dakhor of Sel. Prolonged and persistent Investiture creates changes in individuals even when the intent was never to produce such changes. In conclusion, the manifestation of Pewter and Tin are perfect examples of the manifestation of Preservation’s Intent, the guiding nature of the Shard. The other abilities of Allomancy also reflect this, but none as starkly as the internal physical metals. Following this article are my estimations of Pewters limitations and flared capabilities as well as personal annotations made in the Words of Founding concerning the effects of a Tin savant. Postscript: This essay is of particular note, perhaps we have been looking at these metals in the wrong light all along. If we can, I desire to conduct more tests of this nature on Kandra blessings, I am curious to see if Kandra can become Savants. Until the next letter, Elsric
  13. What would happen if you were a twinborn with pewter? I know that when you use the same metal for both feruchemy and allomancy you get a drastic increase in what that metal is used for so with pewter you would obviously get a massive increase in strength, but would your muscles get so big that you would have problems moving? That happened in Dragon Ball Z when some of the characters were trying to get to the next level of Super Saiyan during the cell saga. Just curious if anyone had any ideas.
  14. Windrunner's News post "Around the Cosmere: Theories and Coppermind" has a lot of tantalizing information in it, but one tidbit has me confused... "o In Brandon’s mind, burning pewter approximately doubles your strength, while flaring triples it. He has not canonized how much either of these things enhances reflexes or healing." I seem to recall that when Ham was training Vin in burning pewter, he explained things a bit differently. I'm at work so I don't have any books with me, but I thought that he explained that a person that is super buff/muscular will not be that much stronger than someone like Vin, a malnourished small girl who isn't strong at all without pewter. I specifically remember the part when they were talking about why being less muscular is good because burning pewter gives you a certain amount of strength. So if a scrawny thug and a really muscular thug were in a jumping contest, the scrawny one would win because he/she is lighter, and her/his Pewter strength can get he/she higher off the ground than someone else who is burning pewter and has a lot of muscle. Basically, if burning pewter only doubles your strength, I would find it to be pretty worthless if I was a scrawny person. If you can barely manager to wield a regular sword (I'm assuming regular Vin couldn't), then burning pewter would certainly not allow you to easily wield a koloss sword as if it was a wooden stick (Vin burning pewter). Thoughts? Am I completely crazy? If I doubled my strength, my friend Logan could still kick the rust out of me...
  15. What happens when I finish the repetitious math work in class, have a marker, and sufficient boredom. From thumb to pinkie, it's: iron, steel, atium, tin, and pewter.
  16. tobar14

    #PewterPumpkin

Didn't turn out as well as I hoped, but I didn't have the proper tools.
  17. Coinshooter

    Thug (Pewter)

I chose to use a heartbeat to represent Pewter's powers, since it gives the person burning it better ability to endure hits, gives them more energy, and so forth. The energy ripples are also used to sort of give the idea that it's giving more energy as well.
  18. Sirce Luckwielder

    Pewter

This is one of the metals that I created with Adobe Photoshop. I took a bunch of .png files and put them into Photoshop, then used a lot of different techniques, blurs, noise, and such to create these. I hope you all like them. I am not sure if I need a disclaimer, but I don't own anything.
  19. The books give us very little in the way of information on Allomantic Savants, but ever since first reading the second book years ago, i've been fascinated by the implications. Does anyone know if Sanderson has given any hints about Savants other than tineyes? Could a misting reach duralumin boosted levels with their allomancy? Could an Atium misting with a mountain of atium theoretically gain true future sight from atium as Elend did via duralumin There's so much unexplored territory with the savants.
  20. I think it’s safe to assume that most everyone reading this blog has also read Mistborn. If you have an overactive imagination like I do, I’m willing to bet that you’ve fantasized about lifting a car while burning pewter, flying through the darkness wearing a mistcloak, or overhearing a private conversation with the use of tin. These fun little daydreams invade my daily life. My inner child yearns for the powers of a mistborn. However, even in the world of Scadrial, mistborn are rare, so the younger me(being the practical child all of us never were), realizes it’s more realistic to long for the powers of a misting (since wishing for a magical power is realistic). This has sparked something of a debate between me and the people whom I’ve forced Mistborn on. The question is: which metal would you choose? If you ask my brother Swifftalon, he’d say either steel or atium. Both of those hold merit. Who wouldn’t want to be able to shoot pennies at people who annoy you, or effortlessly dodge between cars on the freeway just for funsies? It certainly does have a dramatic flair to it. My boss would pick brass. That makes sense. Who wouldn’t want to be able to influence the people around you, or make your employee’s more satisfied with their job? It isn’t hard to figure out which metal I’d choose; you only need to look as far as my necklace. For me, pewter is the only way to go. I know what you’re probably thinking. “Pewter, Nehex? But pewter only makes you stronger! Why do that when you can do all these other awesome things?” Fair question. It would be great to be able to fly, or to see into the future, or manipulate the minds of those around you. But, on a day-to-day basis, which is going to be more useful? Foresight or health? Endurance and energy or mind manipulation? Strength or limited flight? Sure, the other metals are fun and flashy, but as far as usefulness goes, pewter is better than gold. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? What metal would you choose? Weigh your options, then weigh in! Keep the fire alive, Austin
  21. So I got a Henna of the symbol for pewter from mistborn, I also got ones for Atium and gold but they faded quicker than the other ones and I didn't get a photo of them.
  22. Which one is better? Allomantic pewter seems to have more physical strength and durability, but raw Stormlight has better healing power. Myself, I think I'd choose Stormlight over Pewter, but I'd like to hear your thoughts about it.
  23. In your opinion, how much stronger than an average human is Vin when burning pewter? When flaring pewter? 10x stronger? 20x stronger? I ask because I'm trying to set up a Mistborn RPG (while not using the official Mistborn RPG, but a simpler system). I'm using average humans as a baseline for stats and adjusting them for the characters. I'm using Vin as a test case. But, my friends and I can't agree on how much more powerful, as a Mistborn burning metals, Vin is when compared to an average human. I first thought Vin was 20x more powerful, but then I wondered if that was too powerful. Also, I got the impression that flaring increased the power by 1/4th or 1/3rd. So, I come to you, the rabid ... um ... obsessive ... no ... intensely appreciative fans of Brandon Sanderson, for your thoughts.
