  1. So, we got this really useful little cupboard from my parents, but unfortunately the front was awful to look at. First, we thought to make a bigger print of some illustration from the Stormlight Archive, but then I had this idea... It took 3 months from planning to drafting to implementing everything and to finally sticking it to the cupboard. But here it is now: My very own version of Pattern as he illustrates what is inside the cupboard by being - and growing out of - the flower of life. Oh yeah, by the way, it's a medicine cabinet. These pictures can also be found in the Gallery.

  3. Ok, so bear with me on this one. Something has been bothering me, like many who read Oathbringer, ever since Odium said "We killed you." Like many Stormlight fans, I have been mentally (and literally) screaming "What do you mean by WE!" And anyway I've done some thinking, and I think that Unity, instead of a new Shard, as many have theorized, is actually and old Shard that used to live on Roshar. A Shard that was (presumably) killed by Odium and ((possibly Honor?)) (((Working together?))) There is a little possible evidence for this. In the death rattles, one of them goes like "Three of Sixteen ruled, now the broken one reigns" or something like that. Feel free to correct that. Anyway, the way that is worded makes it seem like Odium, the broken one, is not in that original three. Also, since we know there are 3 god-spren--the Storm dad, Nightwatcher, and the Sibling, that leads me to believe that there used to be 3 Shards other than Odium, since it doesn't make sense to me that a Knight Raidiant would bond to a spren of Odium, or that Cultivation or Honor would have two god-spren. That other Shard, Unity, was not liked by Honor or Cultivation or any other Shard. Which makes sense, because they might feel threatened by the fact that he might try to Unite the Shards back into Adonalsium or something. I'm thinking that the Cryptics might be spren of Unity, which is why nobody likes them. It also just makes sense, because math and lies don't really make sense as belonging to Honor or Cultivation, but I can see Unity liking the fact that math is a unifying principle of the universe or something like that. Also, it would make sense because the Dawn Cities are all math based, and they are linked the Uthirthiru in some way ( I think theres a line about the strata being similar? And they both are grown out of rock? Feel free to check that.) And we know that the sibling was related to the tower city as well. So, if the Sibling is a spren of Unity, it all works out. Honor or Cultivation (or both) wanted to get rid of him, but couldn't due to limitation based on their Shard Intent. Neither of them could kill Unity, so they invited Odium, knowing his violent reputation, to come on over to Roshar so he could take care of Unity. That also explains why Odium was allowed onto Roshar on the first place, because I feel like two Shards working together could have blocked him from coming there, if they so wished. Anyway, Odium splintered Unity (possibly with help from one or more of the other Shards) and decided to stay. Eventually, he also splintered Honor, and Cultivation went into hiding. A part of Unity survived, and may have been that voice that's been guiding Dalinar since Book One. That voice seems really distinct from the Stormfather, and I think he once even said so in Oathbringer that he wasn't talking when Dalinar heard the "Unite them" voice. The light that Dalinar feels at the end of books Two and Three may also be the effects of Unity. Dalinar was able to briefly hold whatever is left of Unity, which allowed him to summon the Perpendicularity and all that fun stuff at the end of Book 3. I think that as the books progress, we will only keep on seeing how Unity is actually separate, and wants to be revived. Some odd bits: The splintering might have been the Scouring of Aimia. The Aimians that are a bunch of cremlings seem like something that Unity might have created or liked (since it's a bunch of cremlings unified into one creature) and he might have lived in Aimia. The Unmade might be corrupted Splinters of Unity. I don't think that Odium could have nine relatively large spren of himself and still remain as powerful as he is, so I think he corrupted the Splinters of Unity after he killed him, and those became the Unmade. Obviously, it isn't a perfect theory. And if you've made it to the bottom, congrats on somehow getting through all my disorganized thoughts. Anyway, I want to know what you think, so please feel free to share your thoughts on my theory!
  4. So, I tend to be a very immersive reader. The scenes of a book play out in my head like a Hollywood action film, complete with camera angles, character voices, and sound effects. Sometimes, my mind will alter or add to character appearances and voices automatically, just because it 'feels right' (even though these alterations sometimes contradict the book). One such alteration that my mind came up with was a particular speech... erm, pattern... that Pattern used. Pattern tends to enjoy humming... a lot. I believe he is even described as 'vibrating' on more than one occasion in the series. This led my mind to do something rather interesting with how Pattern pronounced s, x, and z. For example, take this phrase from Words of Radiance: "Insults in particular will be of great use to my people, as they are truths and lies combined in a quite interesting manner." When reading this sentence in Pattern's voice, my mind tended to shift to humming, vibrating, and nasal-based noises, with some of the sounds extended to emphasize the vibrating effect. Here's an attempt to write out how it sounded in my head: "Inzultzz in particular will be of great uuze to my people, azz they are truthz and liez combined in a quite interezzting manner." Another example, which is even harder to decipher (and write, sorry): "You fear nonexistence, but is not unconsciousness the same thing?" "You fear noneggziztenzz, but is not unconjjiouznezz the szame thing?" Additionally, Pattern's voice was high for a male, almost affecting the classic 'nerd' voice (pinch your nose and pretend to be smart and you'll see what I mean). However, his voice deepened a bit when in Shadesmar. I believe that my mind made this jump because his form in the Cognitive Realm better reflects his true age and nature, as opposed to the condensed version that appears in the Physical Realm. I wondered if anyone else had given Pattern a bit of the same 'vibration' effect when hearing his voice in your head? What other characters did you give vocal quirks to as you were reading?
  5. I tried looking for this throughout the forum but didn't really come up with anything, so I'll just ask here I need some nice short Pattern qoutes. Something that'll look good printed on a shirt, so I'd really like some help

  7. From the album: Stormlight Archive Fanart

A quick before-homework sketch of Pattern in the Palanaeum. Lopsided and disproportionate because of too small of a time window for creation, I hope everyone takes it to be "abstract".
  8. Does anyone know about where in Tien’s timeline Pattern started bonding with Shallan? I’m trying to figure out if Tien’s potential Cryptic came through to the Physical Realm after Pattern or before.
  9. Does Pattern have a secret from Shallan? Cryptics have a reputation for lies and manipulation. They are known to watch carefully, to scheme and to plot. The only other known cryptic inserted him/herself near a person of power and then drove them towards paranoia and madness. Perhaps this is a deliberate tactic of cryptics to make their potential knight radiants easier to manipulate or deceive. I think the cryptics wanted to infiltrate the ghostbloods. They started cultivating a spy in a family known to be allied with the ghostbloods. Shallan happily drawing with her family wasn't helpful. So they exposed her powers. Perhaps they manipulated her mother or the skybreaker acoloyte into attacking her. Then Pattern manifests 'to save' Shallan. Shallan is isolated, driven to learn spying and killing, to usurp her father's role with the ghostbloods. Perhaps Pattern even deliberately breaks the soulcaster and plants the idea for Shallan to go to Jasnah so the cyptics can spy on her too. Pattern murdered Shallan's mother and in way her father too. There is reasonable evidence for this theory. Jasnah thinks the cryptics are capable of manipulating Shallan of bringing Shallan and her together. We are told again and again to be wary of cryptics. They like lies. Shallan in her heart seems to know this truth too. She hates Pattern for killing her parents, but like all her other secrets of her past she doesn't seem capable of looking at it straight on. Pattern has always encouraged and been excited by Shallan's infiltration of the Ghostbloods. Pattern's mission seems to be going well. Shallan is at the heart of important secrets and because of her youth and innocence everyone seems to trust her. Pattern is also certain that Shallan will one day kill him, he calls it a pattern. I'd call it a guilty conscience. Perhaps this is Shallan's final truth about herself. She is not to blame for her mother's death, free, able to love and be herself again. Maybe she will redeem Pattern, he will change and see what horrible things he did and she'll forgive him. Maybe she'll break her vows and give Pattern the death he's been waiting for. I'd love to hear any evidence or thoughts, for or against
  10. I just finished my second listening of Words of Radiance, and I’m a little confused about something. It’s pretty heavily implied that prior to Shallan having to use Pattern to kill her mother in self-defence, she and Pattern had progressed quite far in their Ideals, presumably at least to her third Ideal/Truth considering that she was able to summon Pattern as a blade (or are the Spren technically able to become blades from the beginning but just don’t until they feel their partners are ready?). But after that, it’s implied that Pattern essentially vanished from Shallan’s life entirely until the events of Words of Radiance, which if I’m not mistaken was about five years later. So did Shallan accidentally ‘kill’ Pattern by effectively betray the truths she had used for her Ideals like Kaladin did with Syl? Or was Pattern able to escape that fate and just willingly ‘recede’ from her life for that time for lack of a better term? Because it seems pretty clear to me that Shallan DID basically betray her truths, which in Kaladin’s case was enough to effectively lobotomize Syl, and it wasn’t until her memories began to unwillingly resurface that Pattern came back. So was Pattern basically lobotomized as well during that interval or was he just patiently biding his time?

I finished this fan art of Shallan yesterday! I know that it doesn't look anything like her and her outfit is not accurate to the book, but it was fun to create something new. It took me about a week from start to finish. Which is a long time for me, I usually like working on a project from 2 to 3 days, but this was a good practice. I hope you like it and please share with your Stormlight friends! I will be posting a SpeedPaint of this picture friday on my YouTube Channel, so stay tuned! 12. I love this board ! Since joining I have read some of the most logical , well thought out theories and discussions concerning the Cosmere. I’m not sure if this thread has ever been discussed ; my apologies if it has. But, I would like to have everyone take a second to list there favorite quips , jokes , one liners coming from support characters only! We spend so much time focusing on POV characters and greater Cosmere theories I feel we are ignoring the gold we have witnessed in Oathbringer. Outside of Wayne from Mistborn era 2 , Oathbringer has the strongest support character humor I have ever read in a fantasy series . Everyone from bridge 4 , Hoid, Nightblood, Rock and The Lopen ( I know they are bridge 4 but the need special mention ). What are your favorite words a support character has to say . Fan favorites won’t get you an upvote (thus no “ no mating or I am a stick “ ) those have been beaten into the ground. I Assure you Oathbringer is Full of 100 more less recognized quips that are just as good ! I’ll go first . My new fovorite line is from Teft. Dalinar Just checked Amaram and told him to basically shut up and follow orders in Thaylan . Teft eases up and says “ Permision to stab him a little Surrrrrr!” Its gold all day . I couldn’t stop laughing . Mostly because you really didn’t expect that from Teft ! What about you guys . What really made you appreciate Sanderson rich support cast ?

  14. So since we know Ashyn had a cataclysm of some sort, I was rereading OB and came across Pattern talking to Shallan/Veil. It struck me as partially how Parshendi are and also how weird Pattern understands the physical world. Sorry if there's any typos above, on a phone typing with book in hand. But later in the book Ivory tells Jasnah that Cryptics are dangerous. Shallan is one of the furthest progressed Radiants and her spren is still very flawed with how he perceives with his world view. Obviously coupled with other high spren like Malata's spren could be very dangerous. This could be coming to a head again with peace talks with the Azir and their distrust of Radiants. Anyone else have any thoughts?
  15. Just wondering. I mean, Syl is friendly enough (except to Pattern). This could be my imagination, but...she did she meet with Ivory or Glys already? Yeah, but I think would create an interesting dynamic. If a spren were friends with another spren, and they're Radiants didn't like each other. Or best friend Radiants have spren who refuse to talk to each other. Does the Storm father have friends? He seems too...ethereal. (And let's be honest, he's a priss.)
  16. 1. Syl - cute, reminds me of my neighbors' daughter, Kathy. Confused about her weird Honorspren-windspren persona shift thing, though. 2. Pattern - oh my God, he's adorable his first few months when he appears to Shallan (and Jasnah calls him imbecilic), even better now making awkward for Shallan and Adolin. My favorite bean. 3. Ivory - I really like him for some reason, specially that weird speech pattern he's got going. He's like there posh British man of spren. 4. Glys - he's...shy? Nonexistent? Hates the cold and hides in Renarin's shirt to keep warm, while consequentially keeping himself from view? Honestly don't know anything about him, but I am obliged to love him because he's a spren. 5. Wyndle - dry like wine. 6. Stormfather - let's be honest. He's a priss. P.S. Syl is my favorite. What are your thoughts on the spren?
  17. [OB] SPOILERS What if Syl and Pattern start dating? What would be the consequences apart from some mating.
