  1. So I've been reading through Words of Radiance and the Listener's songs really jumped out at me in this process. I wanted to do an analysis of them to see what clues we could comb from them as we enter the year of waiting for Oathbringer. First, some background on who the Parshendi are, from the words of Eshonai's mother: For some reason, the Listeners in the days of the Last Legion were slaves, forced into forms of power, but also forms that forced them to abandon their autonomy (not a reference to Autonomy). On one day of extreme courage, the Listeners decided to accept Dullform, abandoning their ability to think as individuals with power in exchange for freedom. To prevent a loss of their culture and history, they composed songs to remember. Here are the stanzas recorded in Words of Radiance (as chapter epigraphs): "They blame our people for the loss of that land. The city that once covered it did range the eastern strand. The power made known in the tomes of our clan our gods were not who shattered these plains." Possible Interpretation: The Knights Radiant blamed the Listeners for the destruction of the great city of Stormseat (now the Shattered Plains), but the Unmade did not shatter the Shattered Plains. So, if it wasn’t the Parshendi or Odium that messed up Natanatan, what did? Per a WoB, the Natan people were descendants of the Aimian people – what is Aimia really? Stormseat/the Shattered Plains is also listed as the place where the Parshendi became separated from their gods (i.e. the Unmade). While Eshonai's mother makes this sound like a choice the Last Legion made on their own, I wonder if perhaps they had some help in selecting a new form (i.e. moving to dullform) or if they abandoned a form entirely, submiting to slaveform, which is a lack of spren and not considered to be a form at all. "The betrayal of spren has brought us here. They gave their Surges to human heirs, but not to those who know them most dear, before us. ’Tis no surprise we turned away unto the gods we spent our days and to become their molding clay, they changed us." Possible Interpretation: The Rider of Storms was a powerful spren (maybe even an Unmade), and was responsible for bonding spren to the Listeners, but betrayed Odium/The Listeners by giving the Nahel bond (and surgebinding powers) to humans instead. This great spren’s betrayal was even worse with the eventually merging with the Cognitive Shadow of Tanavast. Spren were known to certain humans before they were known to the Listeners. Perhaps this refers to pre Honor/Cultivation humans on Roshar OR maybe even to the Heralds? The Heralds would have been very familiar with surges. "The spren betrayed us, it’s often felt. Our minds are too close to their realm that gives us our forms, but more is then demanded by the smartest spren, we can’t provide what the humans lend, though broth are we, their meat is men." Possible Interpretation: The realm that gives forms is the Cognitive Realm. The Listeners exist halfway in the Cognitive Realm and the Physical Realm, similar to how Lift’s half-way in, half-way out status grants her certain odd things (like the ability to physically touch her spren). As the Listeners have a song-based hive mind (very loose description), they Listeners seem similar to The Sleepless (Dysian Aimians)? As Aimians are an ancient race on Roshar, perhaps they and the Listeners share a common ancestor in their evolution? Who are “The smartest spren?” The Listeners cannot give something that humans give spren, so in return the Listeners sacrifice their autonomy in return for the powers they offer (which isn’t required of humans). Perhaps these spren are the Unmade again who demand more, which is the full submission of the Listeners. That the Unmade want the meat of men, it seems that the poor Listeners are caught in the middle as a tool to be used rather than the object of divine desire. "But it is not impossible to blend their Surges to ours in the end. It has been promised and it can come. Or do we understand the sum? We questioned not if they can have us then, but if we dare to have them again." The Listener’s surges can be blended with the surges of human surgebinders? It seems that human surgebinders aren’t the problem – it isn’t a question if they’ll accept the blending of the Listener’s surges (whatever this means) – but rather, will the Listeners desire to blend with the humans? Who promised that this blending can and will come? "Our gods were born splinters of a soul, of one who seeks to take control, destroys all lands that he beholds, with spite. They are his spren, his gift, his price. But the nightforms speak of future life, a challenged champion. A strife even he must requite." Possible Interpretation: We know that the Unmade are splinters of Odium and are therefore the gods of the Listeners. The Unmade are also the spren of Odium, but also are referred to as a gift – a gift with a price. Perhaps Odium through the Unmade gave the Listeners power (the gift), but it came at the price of their personal autonomy (the price). The strife even Odium must requite (i.e. respond to) is the challenge of a champion. Consider the Stormfather’s admonition to Dalinar: Therefore, Odium will either be defeated or find victory in this battle of champions, which will be shown (I assume) by the end of Stormlight 5. Whew! It's a lot to chew on, but what do we think? Do these interpretations sound reasonable? It makes me feel even more empathy for the Parshendi - if Gavilar was planning to bring back powers that could return the eyes of the Unmade to Listeners (which he may not have understood), I understand why they felt compelled to kill him. Slavery in a war that isn't really their beef (i.e. Odium using them as a tool, not because they're willing participants) is a horrible existence.
  2. Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've been on this site but it's good to be back! I'm excited to share with you another fan-composition I've been working on: "Song of Secrets". After having so much fun doing Shallan's "Veden Lullaby" I wanted to write more songs for the Cosmere. I searched the Coppermind Wiki to see if there were any other songs in Brandon's books (as yet, I haven't read them all) I came up with Song of Secrets. It seemed like a good place to start! This was a super challenging piece to write (I don't know why) and it took me a long time. My intention was to create a piece that would evoke the flavor of the Parshendi culture as I interpret it. I tried to give it an exotic feel (yay, harmonic minor!!) This was a big step for me and it took a lot to write, record and mix this (probably because I have no idea what I'm doing hahaha). Anywho, I hope you enjoy it! ALSO THANK YOU TO @esamitch FOR MAKING THE VIDEO, CREATING ANIMATION AND OF COURSE HER FABULOUS ART WORK AS WELL!
  3. If Shallan is a Lightweaver, then her Order's color is red, just as the Windrunner's color is blue. In the image of the Knights Radient, which I attatched, it shows all the colors. If Kaladin got red eyes at the end of WoR, then at some point, Shallan should be getting red eyes. If it becomes a known thing (which it might be among the Ghostbloods) that Voidbringers have red eyes, this could be a serious problem.
  4. So this may not be the best place to post this question but I'm going to try it anyway. I'm planning on doing a cosplay of a Parshendi warrior for Dragoncon this year. I've found nearly all of the information I need. What I'm still missing is information on their feet. For some reason I always assumed that they were barefoot. Does anyone know?
  5. @Tharatariel10 asked for this piece! It will be relevant soon and the title will make sense and you'll probably understand why she asked for it to be drawn...but for now it's just a piece of concept art and trying to grasp what the Parshendi look like. :)
  6. Ok, I admit, the title is not serious. But my theory is. I am proposing that artifabricians may be using the Rhythms to trap spren in gemstones. To arrive to this hypothesis, I must first state what took me to the conclusion that traping spren in gemstones is a more complex procedure than finding the right gem type and cut. The indication lies in the Ars Arcanun: "The methods of their creation are carefully guarded by the artifabrian community" If one could discover such methods by simply bashing spren with different gemstones based on the ones found in fabrials, there wouldn't be much point in guarding such secrets. However, the listeners discovered how to store spren for later transformation after hearing from humans that it as possible to trap them in gemstones. Why would listeners have such an easier time than humans at learning this method? The answer may lie in what their kind always did since they can remember. To go out during the Highstorm and sing to the right Rhythm may attract an spren that bonds, merges with a listener. Maybe singing does not only attract the spren, but brings the listener close enough to the cognitive realm that they can interact properly. Maybe the single, unified Rhythm they feel when standing before the Rider of Storms is a natural force that transcends the listeners, its vibration permeating the Cognitive Realm and being filtered into the physical by sensitive minds. If a humans somehow learned and memorized a Rhythm, they could bring themselves closer to the cognitive realm by humming to it, perhaps making it easier to attract spren and trap them. As for why I think the Rhythms may not simply attract spren, but make them easier to interact with, I leave this bit of information from a book Shallan read after stealing Jasnah's fake soulcaster: "It claimed that humming, of all things, could make Soulcasting more effective." While I have no idea how artifabricians learned to mimic Listeners and believe the origin of this knowledge was forgotten many desolations ago, I hope to see this theory confirmed or denied now that Rlain is in Urithiru.
  7. When I ordered my 10th Anniversary Elantris book, I decided to ask a question that has been bothering me ever since I read TWoK. Why would the Parshendi order the assassination of King Gavilar just after they signed a treaty? Yes yes, I know that there is an in-book explanation that Gavilar shared with the Parshendi leaders that he was basically trying to bring the Parshendi gods back and they didn't want that. So I used this opportunity to directly ask Brandon what has been nagging at me: Who was holding Szeth's oathstone when he was ordered to assasinate King Gavilar? Immediately after I submitted my order, I started worrying that I didn't word it right and that I might get back the answer of "Parshendi". In the end, I did not get the answer that I wanted, because I did not get an answer. I received a big ol' R.A.F.O., which is bittersweet. Basically what this tells me is that what is told to us in the book, might not be what actually happened. Was a Kandra impersonating one of the Parshendi leaders? If so, why? Sharders, theorize!
  8. I've seen someone infer that the Parshendi rhythms come from Shadesmar. Do we know if there is a WoB to that effect? In addition, I'm wondering how much we as a community know about the internal physiology of a Parshendi. I feel like I read about some Alethi [secretly] dissecting fallen Parshendi, but it might have been just a "why don't they..." thought that I had while reading the books. I'm curious about their hearts, specifically. Do they have four-chambered hearts that beat in a similar way (one-two-break, one-two-break) to human hearts? I guess I'm curious specifically whether there is a physical realm aspect to their rhythm, or it is a purely cognitive thing they latch on to? I wonder what it would take for a non-parshendi other than their god to "hack" into their rhythms, bending them to their own purpose. Could this be where Parshmen came from? And if so, what other things could those same hacks be used to accomplish? I'm also very curious what the actual base rhythm they base all of their more complex rhythms around actually sounds like. Do we know if there is a WoB defining the actual rhythm itself, at all?
  9. I was just reading Brandon's AMA over at r/books from 2 months ago. It was pretty far down so I don't know if others saw... But both Herdazians and Horneaters are the result of human-listener interbreeding. :/ So, apparently they had been 'discovered' long ago, not to mention that relations were probably quite quite good. So Rock+Rlain=fam forever.
  10. Now of course, the only time that Roshar is explicitly mentioned is in the Ars Arcanum, but I think that the broadsheet has given us a pretty good clue that Rosharians have visited Scadrial. Specifically, that "VISITORS from other WORLDS" illustration looks pretty clearly like a Parshendi to me. Furthermore, the description of the encounter seemed to very explicitly describe a Shardpool (similar to the one seen in Elantris or in the Horneater peaks). Both of Scadrial's Shardpools are accounted for in this book (Wax and TenSoon pass through the Pits of Hathsin and walk right past the Well of Ascension), so it seems pretty likely to me that this new metal is due to a new Shard setting up shop, probably with some intention of deHarmonizing the good folk of Scadrial.
  11. Started playing around with some ideas on a basic look and feel for the shattered plains today, and I kinda like 'em =) big changes from what I created in my last Kaladin fanart piece. Let me know what you think!
  12. I've already added this guy to the gallery, but I wanted to toss it into the Forums for a bit more exposure =) Here's the first in a series of works centered around Kaladin. A scene of the aftermath of a battle with the Parshendi. They're on the retreat, and Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgman. And he's yelling something.. Or yawning really hard.. I'm going to try to toss in some of the process work so you can have a look at the phases this thing went through if you want =) Lemme know what you think! (p.s. looks like the progress shots are all scrambled in order. Basically, if it looks crappier, it's from earlier in the process)
  13. Posting the revised edition of this piece. I don't know how to get rid of the old one, but I realized as I put this one up that I had forgotten to give Kaladin his brands.. So I fixed that. Even though they're not super apparent in this piece. heh. If anyone knows how to edit/delete a previous gallery upload lemme know. I'd love to declutter the gallery of that repeat submission.
  14. Phew. It's been a while that I've been working on this one. This is a glimpse of a scene where Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgeman, and is part of a series of Kaladin scenes that I want to create. Looking at this thing you might strike upon some logical questions, like: Bridgeman, huh? So where's the bridge? How did the dude get separated out to some ledge out of sight of his bridge if he had an arrow in his gut? Do you really think the shattered plains have such tall formations as you painted out in the distance? What the lighting? So if Kaladin is way back here, then the Parshendi in the distance must be retreating... so how did the Alethi archers make it way up to the front lines so quick? The answers to these and many other questions are this: I'm jus' learning. This was a practice piece, meant for learning. We learn best from our mistakes and MAN did I make a lot of mistakes in the making of this. But as a result: I learned bunches of stuff =) Thank you Brandon Sanderson for all the inspirations.
  15. Humans existed before the Shattering of Adonalsium. We know this. Besides the existence of the original Shardholders that we know to have been human (Ati and Leras) and Hoid themselves, we know from Sazed's epigraphs in Hero of Ages that Preservation and Ruin created human life on Scadrial based on a form they had seen elsewhere. So, human life existed before Adonalsium was Shattered into Shards. This is established. But what about sapient races other than humans? Besides Adonalsium itself (most likely a singular being), every sapient species we have seen besides humans was either created from or by humans in some way (Kandra, Koloss, Elantrians, Nightblood), or are themselves splinters of a shard of Adonalsium (Seons, Skaze, Returned, most Spren), or splinters of Adonalsium directly (other Spren). Except on Roshar. The Listeners (or Parshendi if you prefer) are the first example we've seen of a sapient species that has no obvious connection to humanity or to a shard. Words of Radiance gives us much insight into the Listeners. I have transcribed a few choice bits: Words of Radiance, Interlude 5 (pages 395 and 396 in the hardcover edition). Listener Song of Secrets, 40th Stanza, epigraph of Chapter 28 of Words of Radiance (page 338 of the hardcover edition). Listener Song of Spren, 9th Stanza, epigraph of Chapter 32 of Words of Radiabce (page 368 of the hardcover edition) Listener Song of Secrets, Final Stanza, epigraph of Chapter 34 of Words of Radiance (page 385 of the hardcover edition) There's a common thread in all of the quotes I noted above- the idea of the Listeners having been betrayed by the Spren. On the surface, this idea makes no sense. The Spren have been identified by Jasnah and Shallan as being the product of human thought. So, if they were created by human thought, how could it be a betrayal for them to work with the humans? Many, if not all, of the Spren are splinters. We know, from the Word of Brandon, that many Spren are splinters of Honor or Cultivation, or some combination thereof (note). We also know that some are splinters of Adonalsium itself, directly, which he had left on Roshar intentionally (note). Humans are Children of Honor. Honor and Cultivation arrived on Roshar together. Odium arrived later. What evidence we have points to humans having been created by Honor, or by Honor and Cultivation. Honor and Cultivation are shards, so logically they cannot have existed prior to the Shattering. So, if there were no humans on Roshar prior to the Shattering, why did Adonalsium leave splinters of himself on that planet? I deduce that there was a sentient species already present on Roshar before the creation of humans- the Listeners. Either naturally evolved or, more likely, a creation of Adonalsium. Why do the Listeners see the Spren working with the humans as a betrayal? Because they, the original Spren, worked with the Listeners first. The humans came later, and some of the Spren, whether the older Adonalsium-based ones or the newer Honor/Cultivation based ones, chose to work with the humans instead. Why? Because Honor and Cultivation made the humans "meatier" for the Spren, as opposed to the brothy Listeners. So, when Odium came, and created Spren (or perhaps empowered existing Spren?) with his own splinters, in order to destroy, the Listeners turned to them as their gods. "Our gods were born splinters of a soul, of one who seeks to take control, destroys all the land that he beholds, with spite." Note that several passages confirm that the Listeners turned to their gods after this betrayal; I think this makes it abundantly clear that Odium did not, himself, create the Listeners (in case anyone wanted to argue for that). All that aside, we have this: The above quote is from the second letter in the epigraphs of Part 4 of Words of Radiance. It is, by my interpretation, a clear statement that Roshar (and possibly the other worlds in the Roshar System) were shaped directly by Adonalsium. All this seems indicative to me. I theorize that the Listeners were created by Adonalsium before the Shattering. This raises some interesting questions, if true. Why would Honor and Cultivation choose to create humans on a world that was already inhabited by sapient life? Were the Listeners changed by the arrival of the two shards? What was the relationship between humans and Listeners before the arrival of Odium? In any event, I am certainly interested in hearing thoughts on this theory, and on the questions it raises.
  16. As the title states, which team do you think would win in a duel, given that all of the magic systems work simultaneously. Team 1: Pre-Radiance Kaladin; unconsciously uses Stormlight as he did in Bridge Four, and has no shards. Vin at her strongest (But not as Preservation); plenty of Allomantic stores. Hrathen, ability as shown in Elantris. Enough said. Team 2: Raoden at his best, able to make use of AonDor. Denth in Warbreaker, plain beast. Eshonai in Warform and in full plate. Place of Battle: Elantris, Sel. Who do you think will win? Feel free to justify below
  17. Again from the ongoing AMA, a new tidbit about the Listeners: The gods that the Parshendi abandoned are of Odium. Awaiting answer on whether they're the Unmade.
  18. First post: Go! I've searched through this site as best I can to find a discussion about why the Parshendi killed King Gavilar six years ago when he confided to them he was trying to bring their gods back, only to bring their gods back themselves. Did I miss something? I am an audio book listener and I do have three small children who have been neglected for the past two weeks since I discovered these books. I might have listened to them on repeat several times...but all the short bits at the beginning of the chapters are hard to keep straight when I can't see them. Is it just a potential discord within the Parshendi- those (like Eshoni and the three who took the blame for the king's death) who do not want the gods to return, and a secret, sub group (Venia and the "scholars) which has been working the whole time to find a way to make it happen?
  19. The Alliance (Newcago, Parts of the Dark Alley, the Root Bear Bar, Pack of the Cosmere, and theSurgebinder Thieves. The Abundance of Doctors will support the Alliance, but is not an active part of it. (if anyone wants to RP the Parshendi, I would be grateful) Here's a RP thread for the Parshendi War.
  20. If you have not read Words of Radiance, stop reading here. So, after reading a post about how the Listeners (or Parshendi) could have been the inhabitants of Roshar Pre-Shattering (found here), and thinking about the fact that Shards have been known to make humans (Mistborn - I don't have the exact reference, as I'm at college and don't have my books), I figured that it is likely that either Honor or Cultivation made humans. (I couldn't see Odium doing it) Then I remembered that in Words of Radiance, the Listeners seemed to believe that the spren left them for the humans or the humans stole them (again, I can't don't have the specific reference, but I will put them in ASAP). This makes it seem like they were able to surgebind the way the Knights Radiant can once upon a time. But now, they instead have the Voidspren. In another topic, I mention how the magic systems existed without the influence of the Shards (cite here, last thing Brandon says #5), but have since been modified by the Shard's intent, (found here). So here is my theory: Pre-Shattering, the Listeners lived on Roshar and were able to surgebind, or something similar. Then, after Adonalsium shattered, the shards of Cultivation, Honor, and Odium made ended up on the Greater Roshar System. Here, their influence, (specifically Honor and Odium as we don't have examples of Cultivation yet) changed the spren into the Surgespren (as I refer to Honor's spren), Voidspren, and possible some Cultivation version. Most likely, Cultivation, with some possible influence from Honor, made humans on Roshar. Honor became associated with humanity, Odium chose the Listeners. He drastically changed the spren the Listeners could bond, but Honor's spren still granted very similar powers, making the Listeners think that the spren betrayed them and that they had to turn to the Voidspren. Let me know what you think, and I'll work on getting those references in there.
  21. This is a mask that my wife made me for a New Years' Eve masquerade ball we attended. It's definitely Shen and not just some random Parshendi, as you can see his Bridge Four tattoo.
  22. Recently, after thinking about the lyrics of the Christmas song "Jingle Bells" I payed specific attention to one line: "Oh what fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!" And so I thought, "Hey! SING A SLAYING SONG tonight! The Parshendi sing while they kill!" And so I sought the opportunity to make a parody of this classic Christmas song. Here was the result: Parhsendi Plateau Assault Written by ChullRider To the tune of "Jingle Bells" Sang by the Parshendi ---------- Dashing on Plateaus Preparing to slay O'er the Plains we go Killing all the way! Singing Creepily Making Spirits Grim What fun it is to run And sing a Slaying song to them! --Chorus-- O! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! Oh what fun it is to kill all of the Ale----THI! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! O, what fun it is to kill all the Alethi! ----------- And unlike "Jingle Bells," this one isn't festive, so you can sing it year-round! Happy caroling! ~ChullRider
  23. Seekers have described listening for allomancy users as listening for a pulse or a beat, and have referred to the waves of metals being burned in almost musical terms. I'm wondering if anyone has drawn a conclusive parallel with them and the Listeners (parshendi) since they also hear this music behind the scenes of consciousness. My thought is that they are both hearing the background patterns of investiture trying to force its way into our world like happened in Elantris. If so, then I think the Mistborn may be able to offer some secondhand knowledge of Listener forms to the Parshendi, and the Elantrians may be able to deduce the different resonant frequencies of their forms. Thoughts?
  24. So I was listening to Words of Radiance and after finishing it, I noticed something about Venley and her scholar friends. She was really ambitious and was quite backstabby towards Eshonai and the rest of the Parshendi. No doubt Odium was influencing her in some way, but my question is how did he get her of all people to listen after all these years? My thoughts on it is that she and her friends actually found Scholar form because of it's innate ambition, and it was more easily influenced than other forms of Non-power. Epigraph on it: Scholarform shown for patience and thought. Beware its ambitions innate. Though study and diligence bring the reward, Loss of innocence may be one's fate. I'd love for this to be discussed, as I'm open to further reworking the theory if I find convincing arguments or proofs to back it up.
